Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to our weekly chat. New notebook is posted and it's loaded and there are some new blogs this week as well. And, of course, the schedule is update. So check it out. Little bit of a slow weekend, but we can talk about anything and everything. So let's get to it.

Jay (Boston, MA)

Can we talk about Kirkland today?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

Yes, we can. As long as you read this first:http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=5273349

Steve (Minneapolis)

Hey Dan,How was the atmosphere at Yankee Stadium last week? It must have been great. But nothing will compare to the intense crowds in South Africa watching the worlds most boring sport. "Center passes it to the wing, back to the center, and back to the wing....he holds it HOLDS It........HOLDS IT!!!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

It was great! I loved it. I wrote a blog earlier in teh week about it.

Mark (Orlando, FL)

I'm going to sell one of my kidney's to an underground medical lab so I can afford to go to Pac vs. Mayweather in November. Freak Status?

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

No, because there is no guarantee the fight will happen, so don't go gettin' crazy.

Mike (Homer Glen, IL)

Hey Dan, any news on Eddied Chambers?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

No. After a very tough loss to Wladimir in March, he's chillin' and I think not thinking comeback until the fall, possibly at cruiserweight.

Will D (Cumberland, RI)

Dan, with the heat and humidity at Yankees Stadium last Saturday, it really shows what type of extraordinary conditioning these guys are in. The heat was stifling to just sit in, nevermind pacing around the ring and throwing punches.

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

And don't forget it's hotter in the ring with the television lights over you.

Tony (New York City)

Dan, do Pavlik?s handlers plan for him to have another major fight this year or perhaps just a tune-up, or not fight at all?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

I spoke with his manager, Cameron Dunkin, the other day. Nothing going on with Pavlik right now. He just fought and had a very tough fight. He's relaxing for the summer and I think we will see him back in a smallish fight in the fall to see where he is and what he's comfortable at.

Greg (Los Angeles)

Any idea when the Agbeko-Perez fight could happen?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

In the fall most likely. I would say maybe September-November time frame.

Jeff (Greensboro, NC)

Dan, the great aerial shots HBO had Saturday night made me long for the days when fights were held at the outdoor arenas at the Caesar?s Palace parking lot. I think the unique setting last Saturday really enhanced the overall broadcast.

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

I agree and I thought HBO did a terrific job capturing it on the telecast, which I watched when I got home.

Carl (Denver)

Any word on who Alvarado will be facing next? Can we expect a title fight soon?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

TBA on both counts.

Horn (Vegas)

Pacman was in New York last weekend. Did he comment on his stance on blood testing? There have been sources who say he is willing to do it 14 days out, but we have not heard it from manny himself.

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Manny has said and continues to say he is fine with a 14-day window now.

randy (NYC)

People are talking about Pac possibly fighting Cotto in a rematch if Mayweather-Pac doesn't happen. Why isn't there any discussion of Mayweather-Cotto at 154? I'm sure Mayweather wants another weight class as well

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

Pac-Cotto is possible if there is no Pac-May fight. Arum promotes them both and could make it pretty easily. To make Mayweather with Cotto, he'd have to deal with the Mayweather people and I don't think he wants to unless it's a monster fight like the Pacquiao fight. Mayweather, by the way, already won a 154 title when he beat Oscar.

G$ (Bay Area)

Pavlik vs Andrade

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

Sure. If Pavlik wants to fight at 168 and wants to fight a solid contender to see about the weight, that's a good fight. It's not like Andrade is going to run. He'd be right in front of Kelly and it would be an entertaining fight I believe.

Walter (Albuquerque, NM)

How much of a say do you think Stewart has with Cotto's next opponent? And is it too much to ask that Cotto take it easy for the rest of the year before getting in the ring with guys like Angulo or Cintron?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

I think Emanuel will be consulted but at this stage of Cotto's career it comes down to the biggest fight possible for the most money. Cotto fights everyone, always has, and isn't about to change. Other fighters would learn a lesson -- a loss does not mean the end of the career or an end to seven-figure paychecks as long as you give the fans what they want.

Bryant (Pitt)

Dan great notebook but do YOU honestly believe Zab could beat or even contend with Khan Bradley or Alexander at this point in his career? He's kinda like gatti too small for 147 but can't make 140

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

I absolutely believe Zab is in every one of those fights. He's got good power, he's still fast, he's not that old and I think he'll be better off at 140.

Horn (Vegas)

Were you able to wake up in time for the Cotto fight after the Martirosyan fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

Yeah.

Leroy (Indiana)

Oh boy, now that you've updated the latest on James Kirland's career, cue the avalanche of incessant posts on his status that you have suddenly unleashed on the freaks.

Sam (Houston)

Dan what are the chances that HBO retain Roy Jones services? It was refreshing to hear someone who knows what the fighter is thinking again?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

I would imagine that if the time comes when they need somebody to fill in for Manny again, Roy probably would get the call again. He was very good and has always been good as an announcer. He blew it a few years ago when he got himself fired.

Aaron (Hartford)

Dan, its amazing how boxing is the only sport where a guy can lose like Foreman did last week but actually gain more popularity by the effort he made. I am a Yuri Foreman fan now for sure !

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

Alas, I am still not a fan of Hartford.

Joel (New York)

Whats up with these British fighters?? David Haye ducking the Wlad and Vitali, Carl Froch not wanting to fight anywhere but where he wants, and Amir Khan ducking Maidana.. What is this the amateurs ??

Luis (Philadelphia)

Great Notebook today Mr. Rafael. What are the chances that we will see a Amir Khan vs. Zab Judah fight in the near future?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

I would say anything is possible. I don't see it next for either guy, but I think next year Judah will get one of the big names at 140, of which Khan is one.

Garth (Stamford, CT)

Dan, I had a great time at Cotto/Foremon fight but left right after Foremon's corner threw in the towel as I assumed the fight was over and wanted beat the traffic out of there. It was not until I was rewatching the HBO broadcast on Sunday did I find out the fight was restarted. I couldn't believe it.

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Makes you an idiot.

Paul (San Francisco)

Dan, out of curiosity, when was the last time you appeared on the national broadcast of ESPN radio to discuss boxing? I have a bad feeling your answer will confirm an observation of mine.

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

I was on ESPN national radio last Sunday afternoon after the Cotto-Foreman fight.

Jack (Burbank, CA)

Discovering that Allan Green reads comic books made his stock go up 1000% in my book.

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

I thought that was cool too. I still read a particular comics title too. Have for many years.

Anthony (Sacramento )

Dan has Dibella considered shopping Sergio to Showtime?

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

I'm sure if HBO doesn't come through, he will.

Joel (Eastchester, NY)

Dan, whats your prediction for tonight? Lemieux or Ayala?

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

Lemieux in dominant fashion.

Horn (Vegas)

If you asked Shirley to pay Bing, would he relay the money to JOSE SULAIMAN?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Brilliant. Speaking of my buddy Jose want to hear the latest travesty? Jose wants Martinez to drop the 160 belt so he can sanction Chavez Jr.-Duddy for the WBC's 160 title. That is a joke and disgusts me.

Chris (Vancouver BC)

As a die hard boxing fan and living in Canada, I should've seen this Lemieux fight before, but havent. What do you think of him? Impressive record and a couple notable journeymen on his record but havent seen him fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

I think he's a tremendous prospect and had him on my year-end prospect top 25 in December. Good power, good charisma, good draw. I like him and look forward to seeing him tonight on ESPN2.

Drake (Minnesota)

Dan, what?s Allan Green like in person? Fight Camp 360 makes him out to be likeable but a loner. Is this pretty accurate?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

Allan can be very likable. He can also come off as very aloof.

Greg (Los Angeles)

Who is promoting Joe Greene? Is he still with Margolus(sp)?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

He's with Joe DeGuardia and The Empire in a co-promotion.

Roy (Reno)

Chavez-Duddy for the middleweight title? It must have been a joke.

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

I wish it was.

Koichi (NYC)

In all honesty I think Floyd is yet again full of hot air when he's saying he'll take a year or two off from boxing. He's got a huge money fight in Pacquiao and I think he's just playing around with us.

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Of course he is.

Joel (New York)

Hey Dan, I know you can't give "inside" information on Pac-May but do you think that fight will happen??

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Juan (Los Angeles)

Has Golden Boy firmed up the undercard plans for Marquez/Diaz yet

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Some fights are set. Apparently you do not read ESPN.com's boxing page. Jacobs-Pirog for a vacant 160 belt is on the show. Linares-Juarez is on the show. Guerrero-Casamayor might be on the show. Amir Khan won't be on the show from England as had been discussed.

Juan (PR)

Why do you have Darchynian ranked above Nonito Donaire at Jr. Bantam? Donaire knocked him out (granted, at a diff weight) and Darchynian has been avoiding him ever since.

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

You answered yourself. Different weight class, one in which Vic is far more accomplished than Donaire.

Juan (Los Angeles)

Any truth to the rumors of Froch/Abraham landing in Montreal

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

It's a place Froch's side has suggested but the Abraham people don't like it. I don't blame them. The idea is to maximize money. You can't do that in Montreal or even come close to what you can do in the UK or Germany.

Koichi (NYC)

I read that Koki Kameda intends to move up in weight. Do you think he can make a statement up there or he's better off at 112?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

He is talking about moving up but I don't think he will get the kind of fight to "make a statement."

Ali MacDonald (Glasgow,Scotland)

I hate Sky Sports, don't they realize it's essential for a young evolving fighter like Khan to keep busy ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

They are in business to make money and get subscribers. If so few people are around and watching anything other than soccer in July and August why waste the money? It's not their obligation to bankroll anyone. And if they do, they'll do it when it works best for their business, which this is - a business.

Bryant (Pitt)

Stump the King......youngest ever to win a title at age 17 and 3 months?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

Child's play: Wilfred Benitez.

Mikey (Levittown, NY)

I just wanted to give huge props to Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini. I saw him at the stadium last weekend and he must have stopped for around 100 pictures with fans on his way to his seat. Great guy!

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

Ray is a wonderful guy. I had a chance to work with him on an ESPN Classic Ringside broadcast a few years ago and had a great time spending a day with him. It was good to see him last week in NYC at the Bob Arum roast and boxing writers dinner and chat with him some. Some of my earliest boxing memories were of watching his fights on network TV when I was a kid.

Benjamin (Little Rock)

Zab sure is a great quote. Three pounds are like a comfy pillow. St. Louis has fly-by-night champions. HBO is the Home Boy Network. Nice honest, engaging interview for the notebook, Dan.

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

Zab had always been a good talker and an engaging guy.

Brooks (Cleveland)

The problem I have with Allan Green is that I can't shake the memory of him fighting scared against Miranda. I can't buy-in to this power-punching bad*ss persona. I think he thinks if he just says it over and over people may just assume it's true.

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

I was in Puerto Rico for that fight and I am certainly not a Green defender, but I will say this -- he was honestly very ill going into that fight and frnakly should have pulled out of it.

Koichi (NYC)

You think Calderon make good on his KO prediction tomorrow night?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

I'd be quite surprised.

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Good news Freaks -- got my KISS tickets this morning, when they went on sale for an upcoming show!

Braindamaged2too (the Asylum)

Big D, If you are taking on "Stump the King Freak" questions.....who was Joe Frazier's last pro fight against? Where? And the result?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Jumbo Cummings, a draw. Come on.

Reno (Philly)

So is it safe to say although Judah is talking a big game, that a Alexander vs Judah fight is unrealistic because of the fact Judah owes King money?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Who knows. Things have a way of working themsevles out.

Charles (Portland)

I really like this kid Erislandy Lara, he has supreme defensive skills. Any chance of him getting a big fight in 154 anytime soon??

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

His promoter (Golden Boy) and manager (Shelly Finkel) would love to do that but nobody is rushing to fight him because he's relatively unknown, brings zero money to the table and he's not mandatory. They will need to do some work to get him into the mix of major fights at 154.

Chuck (Philly)

Dan, who would you like to see Cotto fight next and why?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

I'd like to see him and Berto at 147.

Ali MacDonald (Glasgow,Scotland)

I understand it's business Dan but Amir is only23 years old, he does not need to be sitting out till November or December. It's this kind of bs that puts me off boxing.

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

Part of the reason he will be off for a bit is because of Ramadan.

Anthony (Sacramento)

Dan is there any news on Dzinzuriks next fight? A list of possible opponents perhaps?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

I asked his co-promoter, Gary Shaw, about that yesterday. Nothing at the moment but they hope for a fall fight.

Steve (Hartford)

Why isnt Alexander gettng his mandatories out of the way, instead of an optional against Kotelnik?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Because HBO won't buy his mandatory.

Mannish (SJC)

Dan the man, settle an argurment with my boy. What did you score DLH vs Mosley II?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

I had Oscar winning closely, but I do not recall the exact score.

Eric P (Saratoga Springs)

Where are you seeing KISS, DTM? They are coming to SPAC

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

Bristow, Virginia!

Gutterdandy (Brooklyn)

The ring entrances for the last Vitali fight were spectacular: Sosnowski's fire breathing dragon, and Vitali's "Hell's Bell" with name Klitschko emblazoned on it. Sure wish Stateside fights would start incorporating more of this stuff -- makes for a great atmosphere. Maybe Vitali is getting his ideas from KISS?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Maybe he is -- he did go to see KISS in Hamburg a couple of weeks ago. There's a great photo of Vitali with KISS on KISS's official Web site at kissonline.com.

ilya (nyc)

I love Jacobs vs Pirog. I think Pirog will put a clinic on Jacobs, in the best fight of the night!!

Paul (London)

Dan, will George Groves feature on the televised undercard of Marquez vs Diaz, or off TV?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Off TV. I guess it's possible if there are a bunch of knockouts, maybe we'd see clips.

Anthony (Sacramento)

Hi Dan, I was watching a tape from my archive from earlier this year and was reminded that Top Rank was going to donate a dollar for every ticket sold to the Haiti relief fund. After Dallas and New York plus all the Top Rank Live shows the grand total must be pretty large half way thru the year. Any idea on that amount thus far?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Not sure, but Top Rank is doing that for all of its shows this year.

Gene (Army Headquarters)

Will you show up with your full KISS makeup on?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

It's under consideration. Since my niece and nephew will be visiting that week, I asked my wife if we could paint their faces like Gene and Paul. She didn't think my sister would go for that.

NYPD Blue (NYC)

Is it true David Haye is starring in a remake of The Invisible Man?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

No, he's starring in the remake of The Running Man.

Brooks (Cleveland)

I absolutely love the Berto-Cotto suggestion. That would be highly entertaining and make dollars and sense for both guys.

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Arum mentioned it a few times last week as something he was interested in and Berto was at the Friars Club roast for Aum and Arum and DiBella are good at doing business together. Plus I am sure it's a fight HBO would love to do.

Sean (NJ)

what are your thoughts on the re-start of the fight after the towel? thought it was a terrible call from Mercante. Not a chance in the world Foreman was going to do anything more than take more (unnecessary) punishment. I know he was within the rules to do so, but it seemed like he was just trying to put himself in the limelight

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

I had no issue with Mercante's call.

Chris (Los Angeles CA)

D$ - While I thought Mercante Jr. did the right thing with Yuri, one of his worst moments had to be letting Sweet Pea throw 10 unanswered blows at Diosbelys Hurtado.

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

That I agree with.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

Stump the King-- please trace the lineage of the WBC Super Diamond Interim Heir-Apparent Legends Platinum belt.

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

President for life Jose Sulaiman's wallet.

jmiierz (toledo)

do you think israel vazquez should retire after the one sided beating he took from rafa in the 4th battle?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Yes, and I think that is what he will do. He's getting a start on his post-boxing life -- he turned up as an announcer on last week's Telefutura card.

Matt (Cedar Rapids)

NSAC has a Top Rank date on their calendar for September 18th at the MGM Grand. What is the early word on who is fighting???

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

It's a Golden Boy date and it's TBA.

Michael (Oakland)

I honestly think that if you had a 100 Meter race between Usain Bolt and David Haye, with the loser having to fight either bro Haye would leave Bolt in the dust.

Mike C. (Portland, Or.)

Dan, how long until the WBC starts giving out "Bronze" belts for winners of title eliminators?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

I should ban you for the mere suggestion.

bill (carmel, ny)

dan, danny jacobs should gain a lot of fans with the comments you posted from him earlier this week about taking the opportunity to fight for a title (trinket) but that this will not yet make him a champion.

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

After Daniel answered that question and we were done with the interview, before I hung up the phone I told him that I have been interviewing fighters for more than 10 years and that his answer about that was one of the best answers, most thoughtful answers, I had ever heard.

Mrs. DTM (at work)

Hey, it was great to meet freaks like Marc from Philly on Saturday night at Yankee Stadium. As Marc can attest, I actually exist!

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Yes, Mrs. D$ enjoyed herself at the fight with her mom, S$.

Joe (San Francisco, CA)

You always say you can never go to the HOF induction as there is always a big fight that weekend. Well, this weekend is your chance. Are you going?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

No, I'm not. I decided I'd rather be home for a weekend, especially since the HOF class going in is particularly weak this year.

Braindamaged2too (the Asylum)

Big D, With all the well deserved praise towards RJJ's recent HBO gig I was wondering about Big George Foreman? Is he involved in or with Boxing?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Big George isn't really involved much anymore other than working with his son on his career. But George was in NYC last weekend attending the roast for Arum, whom George is close with.

Tim New York [via mobile]

Do u think Tyson will ever get into the boxing hall of fame?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Yes, on the first ballot.

Chris (Vancouver BC)

FYI, just got two different texts from friends tuning into the friday chat! The start of 2010, both these guys didnt know boxing still existed. Now there full fledge freaks reading your chat at work. I feel proud right now.

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

You are a Freak Recruiter!

Michael (Oakland)

154 Lb title fight: Cotto v. Rhodes in the UK. Buying or selling?

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

Sell all day long.

Anthony (Sacramento)

Dan is Calderon a sure fire Hall of Famer or do you think he needs one more accolade to seal the deal?

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

I have watched and covered Calderon's entire career and I am inclined to vote him in.

drew (nj)

I did some plumbing in my house last weekend and received an email on Monday from Jose Sulaiman demanding I pay a sanctioning fee for a WBC Copper Belt

Kevin (Plymouth)

In regards to David Haye I think Apollo Creed said it best: "The man's running, the man's hiding, the man's scared".

Jason ((Gainesville, VA))

At this point in their careers, would you still favor Cotto over Cintron?

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

In the immortal words of our ex-broadcast hero: Definitely.

Slayer (NYC)

Dan I dont want to here PWills name unless he rematches Cintron, he behind in that fight and was rocked at the time of the accident.

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

Then shut your ears because the rematch ain't happenin'any time soon.

Bryant (Pitt)

Angulo/Cotto in november anyone?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

Bring it on. Love it.

John (LA)

Why was attendence at 20,000 for the Cotto fight? I thought it was supposed to be 25,000.

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

The 20,272 was the paid attendance I am told. There were more than that in the house. I think part of the reason the attendance was a little less than they hoped for was because of the opressive heat and humidity plus the threat for days of thunderstorms.

Mike C. (Portland, Or.)

Paul Williams has built up a pretty good resume. Beaten every fighter he's faced, wins over Margacheato, Winky Wright, and Sergio Martinez. How close is he to be considered a hall of fame level fighter?

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

He's not even in the conversation right now. He needs to fight and beat more guys. He's never even been a legitimate world champion yet. He's a helluva fighter, but HOF at this point? Nope.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

I'm wearing a Banana Republic belt. Do I have to pay Jose Sulaiman?

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

Probably.

The Love Child (Dan's Bedroom)

Ignoring me again?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.

CFF (Hoboken, NJ)

Hey Dr. Steeldanner, a lot of people have speculated that the Foreman/Cotto fight was just a test run for running a much larger fight at Yankee Stadium. Have you heard anything like this? If so, do you know if there are any particular fights Top Rank or the Yankees are hoping to stage there in the future?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

It wasn't a test run for anything. If the right fight comes up Top Rank and the Yankees will talk about it am sure.

John (Jersey)

Danno-You think if the Yanks didn't go 14 in Toronto some would have made the flight back for the fight? Jeter and CC are big fight fans, from what I can tell.

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Doubt it, but I was told the Yanks were making plans in Toronto to watch it on TV. Posada and Cotto are friends.

ram (elizabeth, nj)

dan, i know you have marquez winning in your scorecard against pacquiao in there 2 fights but im curious how did you score the 1st round of the 1st fight when pacquiao knock Marquez 3 times?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

I was ringside and scored it 10-6 but had Marquez ultimately winning the fight.

Ali (Tampa)

I was pleasantly surprised at how well Cotto carried the weight at 154. Would you recommend he stay there since the division is deeper than 147.

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

I think he should fight where he can make the most money.

Guano man (Puertorico)

dan how does trinidad vs vargas not make the top ten of puertorico vs mexico I thought that was a hell of a fight

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

Vargas was born in the United States, not Mexico. That's all I can think of as a reason it wasn't on the list.

John (ATL GA)

i doubt arum will go back to yankee statium given the low attendence. i bet he paid a fortune to put that fight on there

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

He didn't pay to be there. The Yankees were his partner on the event.

Pete (NYC)

Sort of a random question. I know Fernando Vargas lost his biggest fights. What was his biggest win? Winky?

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

Since Winky was not well-known at the time and a lot of people thought Winky won, I would say his best win was against Quartey.

Brock (Illinois)

Id be interested in a Kirkland-Angulo fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

You and every other boxing fan alive.

Bellz (Elk Grove, CA)

Viva Love Child!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Nice.

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

We have Breaking News from the Bat Instant Message.

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Yuri Foreman had his surgery and is out. Yuri says it "went well" and he'll be on crutches.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

Bat technology is both omnipresent and multi-faceted!

Greg (Los Angeles)

Any idea when Marcus Johnson could fight again?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

His name just came up when I spoke to DiBella yesterday. Marcus is off for the summer.

hunter (ohio)

what is your record in boxing

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

Undefeated.

Shawn (Bronxville)

Did you ever wonder the size of Valuev poop? He must drop *BOMBS*

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

Yes, these are my readers.

Koichi (NYC)

It's too bad Khan's fight was pushed back, I liked the idea of him vs Casamayor being broadcasted on the JMM/Diaz II ppv.

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

I like it also but I sort of always thought it was too good to be true that Khan would be on the telecast.

Brock (Illinois)

D$ do you know the tie-breakers for the Super 6? I have never heard them announced and have gotten some strange results for who makes the semifinals on the bracket predicter on Showtime's site.

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

The tie-breakers are listed in the master contract, of which I have a copy. I haven't read the tiebreaker stuff in ages so I am not sure off the top of my head. Ultimately, if there are ties I believe the last tiebreaker is that Showtime gets to make the decision.

Kevin (Boston)

hey dan, what do you think of a fight between rocky martinez vs ji hoon kim at 130? i think that would be an awsome fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

I agree!

John (Jersey)

Danno, have you ever written an extra two paragraphs in a column with a torn meniscus and damaged ACL in need of reconstruction?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

No but I have typed excessively with a messed up finger.

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

For visual evidence of Yuri's surgery: http://twitpic.com/1vurv1

John (Jersey)

Danno,They guys in front of us Saturday wore Puerto Rican flags in as capes, booed the Israeli anthem and half the American anthem before singing along, and left after the towel was thrown in... About as anti-fight-freak as one can get, right?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

Pretty much. One of the lowest class things you can do is boo a national anthem.

Chris (London)

Some sites reported Wlad v Povetkin was signed... true?

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

I was in touch with the Klitschko people a couple of hours ago. So unless it happened in the last 90 minutes or so, it's not true.

Matt (CT )

Dan, I was at the fight Saturday, sitting up in the grandstand, last row...and it was great...what an amazing atmosphere...I alternated between watching the ring, and the giant video screen, behind which I would see the approaching train...what a great night...also, if Yuri Foreman wasn't with Top Rank, I could see that being the perfect fight for De La Hoya if he wanted to come back...

bill (carmel,ny)

dan, have you asked arum about possibilities for the fight he is talking about having at the new giants/jets stadium? and buy/sell that it actually happens.

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

I think Bob is absolutely serious about a fight at the new Meadowlands. We talked about it a little last week. His thing is he says he wants to put on a card with several title fights, make it a really good event with a variety of fighters in title bouts. We'll see what he can pull off.

Isaac (DC)

there is talk in a PR newspaper about Juanma VS Marquez talks are already done and the fight is happening. what do you know?

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

It's been discussed but it's not done, especially with Juanma having a fight on July 10 to win first. But if he does, I think there's a good chance it happens.

Tim New York [via mobile]

Whats is the best fight you ever saw in person?..and why?

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

Corrales-Castillo 1, for obvious reasons.

richard (corpus christi)

Your thoughts on Mayweather saying he wants to retire

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

Yawwwwwwwwwwwnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn.

Butch (Bluefield, WV)

Has there ever been a comparable proposed mega-fight on the level of Mayweather vs. Pacquiao that was NOT eventually made?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

Lewis-Bowe never happened. Tyson-Foreman never happened. Trindiad-De La Hoya II never happened.

CFF (Hoboken, NJ)

Hey Danos de Piedra, Froch saying he won't get a fair decision in Germany reminds me of the trouble Mickey Ward and Paulie Malignaggi had in Texas. My question is, don't the corners have any kind of say in judge and referee selection, even if it's just veto power?

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

First off, legendary nickname!!! A true winner. As for fighters and their teams, they can protest a pick for an official selection but they don't have final say.

The Good Doctor Filth (Cleveland)

Catching up on the chat and found one of your best jokes to date. Duddy-Chavez Jr. for middleweight championship of the world. That was a joke, right?

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

It's not a joke. It's what the WBC would like, which is why it is pressuring Martinez to drop his 160 belt.

Sean (Pensacola, FL)

Mayweather vs. Jones Jr. (In his prime) Who wins?

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

Ding, ding, ding! Winner for dumbest question of the day.

Joey (Richmond, VA)

In Britain, Haye may get away with fighting Audley Harrison, but to the rest of the world he comes across looking as the sport?s biggest fraud.

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

He is a fraud if he takes that fight. It's one thing to take that fight if you keep your mouth shut and just go about your business. Fine. No problem at all. But when you yap and yap and yap and yap for years about the Klitschkos and get them served on a silver platter with a deal that makes sense (as in no options and 50-50) and you still flee like you just got caught in bed with your best friend's girl, you're a chump and a fraud.

Idiot (Idiotville)

Mayweather vs. Tyson (in his prime) Who wins?

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, you mentioned in your blog on the Yankee Staduim fight experience that you were ringside talking with the HBO folks. I was wondering if you ever talk with Harold Lederman and how you generally rank his scorecards for fights?

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

Sure, I always chat with Harold. Have for years. Generally, Harold's scorecards are on the money. Everyone has an off night here and there but Harold's scorecards are generally very, very good.

BSPN (Breaking News)

Winky Wright is calling out Sergio Martinez

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

No kidding. He has been. In fact, I just got an email from his main main about it. Problem is, nobody gives a crap about seeing Winky and Martinez. Winky hasn't fought for over a year and lost every single round in his last fight, which was his second loss in a row. Get in the ring, fight for short money, get yourself out there again. But don't beg for a fight nobody cares about and one he doesn't really deserve at this point. Now, if he gets busy and wins a fight or two, great.

Marko (St. Louis)

Dan, I noticed a dearth of big fights in Europe in the coming weeks. Think the World Cup has something to do with that?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

That plus it's always like that in Europe in the summer.

Jose (Minneapolis, MN)

Who is next for Sergio Martinez?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Read yesterday's blog my man.

Marc (Philly)

I was only allowed at the Yankee Stadium fight because the Cunningham fight was completed by then and i finished watching the replay 127 time. And yes freaks that is the real Mrs. DTM

Alec (Nashville)

Speaking of Harold Lederman, where does he sit for the fights? Is he on the same side of the ring as one of the judges, or is he on the side with the HBO guys?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

He sits next to the HBO broadcasters and does not wear a head set while watching the fight so the commentary does not impact what he is seeing.

Steve (NYC)

Why do the pay networks ignore Steve Cunningham? What is more All- American than his story?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

They don't do cruiserweight fights for some reason.

ram (elizabeth, nj )

Dan, where can we watch the bob arum roast?

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

Not sure. I think Top Rank may have recorded it. It was pretty awesome. Ross Greenburg's joke was legendary!

Dino (Vermont)

Dan, what has Haye done ? other than run his mouth ? to deserve to be ranked higher than Povetkin or Adamek in your heavyweight rankings?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

He beat Valuev and knocked out Ruiz. That is more than either of those other guys have done at heavyweight.

W. Wright School of Boxing Business (Milkcarton)

We proudly recognize our 2010 class valedictorian, Jean Paul Mendy.

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

Legendary. Glad you read the notebook.

Willie (Little Rock, AR)

Sitting next to Tommy Hearns at a star-studded boxing event (dis)honoring Bob Arum. Does life get any better than that?

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

Nope.

Anthony (Sacramento)

Dan if I read the notebook and blogs correctly we will get Marquez Diaz 2, the Jacobs title fight, Juarez and Linares plus possible Casamayor vs. Guerrero? That is a freaks fight card!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

That is the working card as of now, so, yes, it is looking like a Freak Card for sure, which is what Richard Schaefer set out to do. I don't love Juarez being on it, but it's still a good show as it stands.

Kevin (Boston)

so not even a hint as to what greenburg's joke was?

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

It's a family Web site.

dantheboxingfan (flanders NJ)

Good Blog yesterday Dan, I totally agree with DiBella, guys who cherry pick are on HBO and guys who will fight anybody can't get a date for the most part. What's up with that???!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Makes no sense.

drew (nj)

did bob flip anyone off during the roast?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

LOL, no.

Colin (College Park, MD)

Will Ann Wolfe still train Kirkland after he gets out? I remember her being very angry in the Real Sports segment when another of her fighters got arrested.

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

My understanding is that things are not good between them and it is unclear if she will continue training him. She also has a piece of his management contract. So who knows what will happen? Hopefully, they can stay together.

scotty (MD)

Dan, completely agree with what you said about the national anthems last Sat. night. I wish HBO had replayed them. All were powerful, but the Israeli anthem was amazing.

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Exactly. I was blown away by the woman who performed the Israeli anthem. It was incredible.

Prabhvir (East London)

Do you think Timothy Bradley is running scared of Alexander, or actually waiting for the fight to be built up as he claims?

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

Let's be clear here -- Bradley and Alexander aren't running from ANYONE. But just because we want to see it right now doesn't mean it is going to happen. These things do take time, planning and proper building. If they keep winning it will happen. But nobody is running from anyone.

Hugh (Richmond)

Dan, Loved the notebook. Is it too early for me to be excited about a Paul Williams vs. James Kirkland fight? Just asking...

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

A bit early.

jason (new york)

Hey whats up Dan? I just read your notebook and saw what they did to Funeka for testing positive for a illegal substance. I was Wondering, what did the commission, do if anything, to Guzmon for coming in 9 pounds over weight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

He was fined like $35,000, but that happened way back at the time of the fight. He also had to pay Guzman the extra $15,000 or so, which will now be returned to him.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, your blog on Sergio Martinez's inability to get an HBO fight or HBO's influence to compel any one of the fighters you mentioned as possible opponents to fight Sergio was incredible....and frustrating. It seems like a no-brainer that HBO would support Martinez.....am I missing something...?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

No, it is a no-brainer.

Steve (Hartford)

Dan over/Under on the ppv buys for Marquez/Diaz II, 250,000?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

I think under. If it did 250,000 I think everyone involved will be thrilled.

jonny (knar pot)

You can see all the national anthems here http://www.toprank.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=23700&ATCLID=204958148

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

Great find!

Michael (oakland)

Any truth to Rigondeaux's rights being sold?

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

They are working on a deal with Top Rank but there are a lot of problems between his promoter and manager.

Chris (Bay Area)

I feel like Allan Green has a legitimate shot to upset Ward. Green seems very dangerous and Ward seems to beatable. What do yout think?

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

I think Allan has the power to stop anyone at 168 and he is also a skilled boxer, so I give him a good chance even though I am going with Ward.

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

I just counted for no apparent reason: I have been ringside for 18 Miguel Cotto fights.

Prabhvir (East London)

Do you think that after such a long break, Kotelnik will be competitive against Alexander, perhaps troubling him with his tight defence?

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

I think Devon will school him with relative ease and win a lopsided decision.

Nate (Denver)

Who was the lady HBO kept showing over and over during the Cotto-Foreman broadcast?

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

If it was a woman with long, blonde hair, that was Yuri's wife.

Jason (NYC)

Do you see Shannon Briggs fighting a top heavyweight before 2010 is over?

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

I don't see him being a top heavyweight before any year you could name is over.

Turk (DC)

If the cruiserweight tournament happens does BJ Flores move up to heavyweight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

Nah, just duck the tournament.

Matt M (Columbus)

Dan, did you get a chance to talk to Liev Schreiber?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

No, which is good, because I would have asked him to recite the alphabet and then I would have fallen into his arms in delight.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, I was wondering when you're going to be the in-studio guest on FNFs again?

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

Just was going over the schedule with the producer the other day. I'll be in the studio at least two more times this summer. Not sure of the exact dates yet. We have to work that out with my travel schedule for fights and stuff like that like. Good chance I'll be in studio the night Zab fights on FNF.

Michael (Oakland)

HBO did a horrible job with the Cotto-Foreman fight. Just saw/heard those anthems on the Top Rank site and seeing the part of the stands set up for boxing filled to the rafters it showed what the atmosphere was really like. HBO's constant blimp shots of a 75 empty stadium made it look like a poor turnout. Major Fail on HBO's part.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, In regards to HBO's Sports/Boxing department.......who is responsible for deciding what fights end up on HBO? And does any of the on-air folks like Max, Lampley, Larry, or Manny advise or have input?

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

The execs make the call, not the announcers. Do the announcers get asked for their opinion sometimes or give it without being asked sometimes? Sure, but they get paid to announce. The execs get paid to buy the fights and negotiate the deals.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Hi Dan, Thank you for your Clay Bellinger reference a couple weeks ago. I lived in Oneonta, NY for several years and the man is a legend there. Just the mention of his name brought back some good memories....thanks again!

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

Well I have Clay to thank for giving me my first trip as a working reporter to Yankee Stadium. It one of the single most memorable experiences of my career.

Mike (Reno, NV)

You think HBO approves Jesse Brinkley vs. Bute for the fall? I think it would be a good action fight.

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

I think it would be a solid fight but I have no idea if they would or not. I think it's a tweener.

CAM (NEW YORK)

Whats up fight freaks, first off I finally got a picture with you at the BWAA. Second, what do you think of Pacquiao vs. Cotto at 154? it would be a great match for Cotto to redeem himself and Manny to get his 8th title.

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

Nice to meet you at the dinner! I think if they have a Pac-Cotto rematch it would make sense at 154, giving Pac a chance for a title in an eighth division.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, Great job reporting on and blogging about the Cotto vs Foreman fight. I was wondering though whether putting on a fight card at a stadium is more difficult than say an MGM or similiar venue?

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

Deinitely harder with the logistics. Way harder.

jimmy (staten island)

hi dan - last weekend i watched the Holyfield/Dokes fight from the late 80's - Dude - you never told us how sick that fight was! That has to be one of the best fights of that decade - unreal action. I didnt realize how good Dokes was back in the day - fight freaks, check that one out!

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

I have mentioned that fight before. It is a great, great heavyweight fight. It was on Showtime. Maybe I'll make it the DVD pick of the week next week.

Steve (NJ)

Which is the next telecast Larry Merchant will work for HBO?

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

I believe the Montreal fight on Aug. 14. For some reason, HBO will only have two announcers at the July 31 PPV card - Jim Lampley and Manny Steward. No Max or Larry for that one. No idea why, but I don't like it.

chuzen (st. louis)

what about zab vs berto sometime down the line?

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

Would be an interesting fight.

John (Jersey)

Danno - you try to throw Hearns any tips, like, "You should have thrown the left..." during the clip you said they showed during the roast of his fight with Hagler?

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

LOL, no. Tommy was a good sport about it when it came up, but he did turn to me when they showed it a second time during the program and said something like, "I can't believe they're showing it again!"

chuzen (st. louis)

dan will you be at the ward green fight? if not, how about a RAD?

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

I won't be at the fight, so there is a good chance of an RAD next week.

Joel (New York)

Hey Danimal, What do you think of Carl Froch's behavior on not fighting anywhere but where he wants to fight??

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

He's a big baby.

Nick (Bronx)

danno - good stuff on Kirkland - didnt realize that ODH stepped up to the plate for him - any idea of what he wrote or said to the court that helped Kirkland?

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

He appeared at the hearing when he was sentenced and spoke to the judge. Here is my original story with comments from Oscar:http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=4498236

NYPD Blue (nyc)

David Tua versus Monte Barrett in Atlantic City? I might go, but they should have given Tua two or three Barrett-like opponents to knock out, like George Foreman used to do. It's a long way to go for a round or two.

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

It's a horrible matchup.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga)

Hey D$$$ help me out.... I just got in trouble at work for chatting and watching Tito vs Campas on youtube. Can't you like write me a letter or something???

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

What am I supposed to write? Please excuse Erik from Atlanta because he's a Freak?

Steve (NY)

Dan, is Abraham also a big baby for wanting the fight in Germany?

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

Not at all. There's a big difference between saying you'd like the fight in Germany (which I haven't actually heard Arthur say, just his handlers) and threatening to pull out of the tournament if you don't get the fight in your hometown.

Chris (PA)

If Zab likes having his cushion of 3 lbs and Berto doesn't want to drop all the way to 140, that sounds like a great opportunity for both guys at 143-144 range.

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

I thought of that yesterday when I was wring the story about Zab.

chris (harlem)

Dan, Liev Shrieber comment was hilarious!

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 PM)

I cracked myself up when I wrote that.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

Do you think more work time is lost by NCAA Basketball Bracketology or the Freak Nation?

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 PM)

Well the tourney is only once a year, the Freak Chat is once a week, so I have to go with the Freaks.

billy (boston)

Yo Dan - whatever happend to that movie that was supposed to come out about Mickey Ward? They talked about Mark Wahlberg playing the role, etc.. Any news on that?

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

It is still in production from what I understand.

Phil (Atlanta, Ga)

Dan,do you think HBO will televise the Klitschko/Povetkin fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

If that's the fight Klitschko takes, I would hope HBO would show it. But I don't think they know for sure what they are doing in the fall.

Chris (Nashville)

Got a perfect scenario for you Danimal. Liev Shrieber narrating "The Love Child's" highlight video.

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

I'm going to faint.

Aaron (MA)

read somewhere that Rigondeaux was going to fight for an interim belt on FNF this summer. Any truth to that happening?

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

That was a possible scenario, but with his promotional and management problems, all bets are off on Rigondeaux at the moment until those are sorted out.

Keith H (Seattle)

Remember "alt-tab" to keep the boss away from the chats.

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

Excellent advice.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Holyfield vs. Dokes had great action, nice trading of low, low blows, and a phenomenal knockout punch by Holyfield with Dokes rebounding off the ropes - classic! Not to mention, Holyfield's first true heavyweight test!

Aaron (Hartford)

the WBC is pathetic...with Sebastian Zbik the interim WBC champ, why wouldnt they just make him full champ if they strip Sergio... I am really starting to dislike the alpa orgs more and more...

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

Who knows? They're the scum of the earth.

Brian (scottsdale, az)

do you think Haye would be willing to fight shower door? or too risky?

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

danny (houston)

Dan: is the Pyramid in Memphis a good fight venue? I watched a replay of Lewis Tyson and on TV it looks pretty cool, but there arent many big fights there... just curious

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

It's fine, nothing special. I was there for Lewis-Tyson and Tyson-Etienne. Now when there's a big fight in Memphis, it's at the Fed Ex Forum, which wasn't built at that time.

Chris (Bay Area)

HAHA just used Alt-Tab. Sick move

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

Freaks helping Freaks. I have a tear in my eye.

chuzen (st. louis)

dan, has richard schaeffer said anything else about those old golden boy fights that they are supposed to be putting on DVD?

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

No, I need to ask him about that next time we speak.

Dave, NJ [via mobile]

Dan has your DVR ever died on you and you lost any fights or programs saved on it? It happened to me and that is one of the worst feelings in the world.

Dan Rafael
  (2:31 PM)

Yes, it has. Such an empty feeling. :(

ed (Brooklyn)

I saw Jerry Izenberg the guy is a frekin legend!!! do you know him at all?

Dan Rafael
  (2:31 PM)

Yes, Jerry was at the fight. I do know him and, yes, he is a legend. One of the greatest American sportswriters ever.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

"The Fighter", which is the Micky Ward movie, is in post-production and currently scheduled for release November 26, 2010-- http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0964517/

Jordan (Canada)

Does Troy Ross get a rematch?

Dan Rafael
  (2:34 PM)

If his eye is OK I suppose it's possible, but I thnk Sauerland has other plans for Cunningham.

John (ATL GA)

so which statium experience is better...yankee or cowboy?

Dan Rafael
  (2:35 PM)

Both were fantastic experiences, but I liked Yankee Stadium more because the ballpark means something to me as a lifelong Yankees fan.

Wall Street (New York, NY)

The stock market has just dropped 490 points in the last 10 mins business everywhere are reporting a high usage of Alt/Tab buttons.....

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Dan, it may sound crazy, but I actually think Nate Campbell-Julio Diaz doesn't sound like a bad scrap, especially at this stage in their careers. What do you think?

Dan Rafael
  (2:36 PM)

As a PPV opener, I'm all for it.

Mark (LV NV)

Think we will see a Manfredo - Joey Gilbert rematch for the IBO strap ?

Dan Rafael
  (2:37 PM)

There are so many things wrong with that question that I should ban you just to put all of us and you out of our collective misery.

steiny (ny)

you always say how Caballero is one of the best p4p out there, yet he only ranks #5 in your DIVISIONAL rankings. please explain

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

He just moved up to a new weight class and when he got there he beat an unranked fighter.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga)

How interested would you be in a Bute vs Dawson fight at 175 assuming both guys win there next fight??

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

Love it.

John (ATL GA)

have they ever had a Don King roast? now that could go on for days....

Dan Rafael
  (2:39 PM)

Yes, the Friars Club had one for hima couple of years ago.

Nizzi (Des Moines, IA)

Dan, does Povetkin have a shot against Klitschko or is this going to be like most of Klitschko's fights go?

Dan Rafael
  (2:40 PM)

It's a worthy heavyweight matchup, but I believe Klitschko beats him, as I do for any fight out there for Wladimir right now.

Jordan (Canada)

Follow up question. It looked like Ross' eye was torn rather than split and he claimed that he was thumbed in the eye. Is catching a guy with the side/thumb of the glove an accidental foul? I don't think I've ever seen that call made.

Dan Rafael
  (2:43 PM)

It was accidental and I am not sure it was legitimately a thumb anyway.

Roy (Reno)

Everyone in my company telecommutes so between the notebook, the chat and all of the Friday mailbags, my Friday mornings are lost.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

there have only been 18 signators to the petition I started a few weeks ago-- FREAK NATION UNITE!!http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/dan-rafael-for-commentator

Dan Rafael
  (2:44 PM)

You really made that? You ARE a Freak.

Chris (Bay Area)

Why is Marquez vs. Diaz on PPV? Both are coming off of loses. I feel like its not going to do so well. Better have an outstanding undercard.

Dan Rafael
  (2:44 PM)

Are we really going to go over this again? Actually, we're not.

Jeff (Gilbert, AZ)

D$,Since there are no serious contenders in the heavy picture to challenge the K2 how long must they continue to stiffen the competition in order to become HOF worthy?

Dan Rafael
  (2:45 PM)

I think they're both probably HOFers at this point, just racking up one dominant defense after another. Neither has been remotely challenged for years.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga)

stump the king name another fight who has fought in 4 decades besides Evander Holyfield (80's,90's,00's,10's)

Dan Rafael
  (2:46 PM)

Easy: George Foreman (60s, 70s, 80s, 90s).

Dan Rafael
  (2:48 PM)

OK, Freaks, thanks for the excellent chat today. Hope you check out the notebook, blogs and updated rankings and schedule. Enjoy FNF tonight. I'm looking forward to seeing David Lemieux. Talk to you next week. Peace.
