Chat with Jon Anik

Jon Anik
  (1:01 PM)

Hey folks. Thanks for checkin' back in for another chat. A quick programming note off the top. Due to the World Cup, MMA Live's schedule on ESPN2 will be slightly altered in June. This week, we won't be on until Sat. at 1AM PT/4 AM ET. Next week, it will be Fri. 6/18 at 10PM PT/Sat. 6/19 at 1AM ET. Then, 6/24, we are back to our normal time slot at 10 PM PT. I will throw out several reminders on Twitter (Jon_Anik), so get those DVRs set! Alright, let's vent.

Patrick (Lexington, KY)

Hey Chost. Love your work. The Griffin/Dunham fight is one of the more exciting ones on the card for Saturday, in my opinion. (Glad we get to watch it for free on Spike). How do you see that one playing out?

Jon Anik
  (1:03 PM)

Definitely the most intriguing fight on the card for me, and arguably the most important. I have gotten on the Dunham bandwagon. But that said, I'm not sure there is anything he can throw at Tyson Griffin that he hasn't seen before. I like Griffin by unanimous decision.

Evan (SLC)

Was it the right decision to bring in Franklin as a TUF coach with just a couple days left in training?

Jon Anik
  (1:04 PM)

I think it was the only feasible alternative, other than to have Tito continue. The UFC had never been forced to make an adjustment like that on the fly during a TUF season. All things considered, I think it's okay, if not ideal.

Baumer (NYC)

DVR technology will automatically adjust to the new show time...just an FYI

Jon Anik
  (1:04 PM)

Great. Hopefully, there will be some consistency with our time slot going forward. We appreciate all of your patience and support.

Eric (Michigan)

Rampage Jackson is full of excuses for losing to Evans...I think Rashad proved he was the better fighter all the way around

Jon Anik
  (1:06 PM)

I think Rampage needs to re-invent himself a little bit. Randy Couture made a great point on our post-fight show at UFC 114. He said Rampage needs to at least present his takedowns/ground game as a threat. Right now, he is pretty one-dimensional. Even if the gameplan isn't for a bunch of takedowns, he still needs to keep the opposition honest.

ACCBiggz (San Francisco)

I'm with you Anik, but I'm going with the upset. I think Dunham takes a 29-28 decision similar to the Frankie/Tyson fight.

Jon Anik
  (1:06 PM)

I actually picked Griffin to win, but wouldn't be at all surprised if Dunham found a way.

Tomwit (Malabo. Equatorial Guinea)

Hey Jon. Its 7 p.m. and 100 degrees here. Hey.when does Hershel Walker fight again?

Jon Anik
  (1:07 PM)

Tomwit, thanks for joining us. Not sure about a next fight for Herschel Walker. But he has said he wants at least one more fight, and all indications are Strikeforce will honor his request.

Jason (Tacoma, Wa)

Sucks about the scheduling, will the show still be up on espn.com at it's normal time?

Jon Anik
  (1:07 PM)

Yes, we will be posting MMA Live on espn.com late Thursday night. So you won't have to wait until Saturday.

Jeremy (Houston) [via mobile]

When is Mir fighting next, I haven't heard anything since the Carwin fight.

Jon Anik
  (1:08 PM)

TBD. Seems as though he's contemplating a move down in weight, although I just don't see it. Mir is a huge man, and I still think you can make a case he is a Top 5 UFC heavyweight.

RC (San Antonio)

My DVR did NOT automatically adjust so make sure and check

Jon Anik
  (1:09 PM)

Thanks, RC.

Jason (Owosso, MI)

Will Zuffa add a weight division between 205 and 265?

Jon Anik
  (1:10 PM)

Doubtful. If they were ever to add a sixth division, it would probably be in that window (or perhaps b/w 185 and 205). But five divisions makes it very easy to follow, and the UFC is in no rush to fix something that isn't broken.

Eric (Michigan)

Machida is overrated...do you agree?

Jon Anik
  (1:11 PM)

Good question, but I'm not sure I'd go that far. Now, many of us (myself included) got a little too high after his KO of Rashad Evans. But in the light heavyweight division, everyone loses. I think Lyoto will come back better than ever.

Brian (Milwaukee, WI)

Any idea when...if ever the WEC will add a flyweight division?

Jon Anik
  (1:12 PM)

Been rumblings for some time, but now it seems to be on the back burner. WEC GM Reed Harris says the focus right now is to make sure all of their bantamweights, featherweights, and lightweights get enough fights and stay busy.

Greg (Philadelphia)

Whats the most weight a fighter can cut? do guys like tibau, rumble, irvin, etc really cut 30 pounds? whats the max you can cut?

Jon Anik
  (1:13 PM)

I don't believe there is any maximum in terms of weight you can cut. I've heard of certain guys cutting upwards of 50 lbs. At one point prior to UFC 101, Forrest Griffin weighed 258. He fights at 205.

The-Scooch (NYC)

Faber dropping to 135. Good career move?

Jon Anik
  (1:14 PM)

I think so. Faber wrestled in college at 133, and doesn't have a difficult cut to 145. I think he'll be very competitive, borderline elite, at 135. And there are also a ton of great matchups there for him in the WEC- Miguel Torres, Dominick Cruz, and Takeya Mizugaki, who gets the first crack at Faber at 135.

eddie (miami)

hey JA ...... will we see Alisteer in ufc ?

Jon Anik
  (1:16 PM)

I do think Alistair Overeem is a target of the UFC and eventually could end up there. The deal will have to be lucrative, b/c Overeem takes advantage of his cross-promotional freedom as well as anyone. Competes in Japan, and not just in MMA, etc. So the UFC will have to pay, but if the desire is there on both sides, it'll happen.

John (Sioux Falls, SD)

MMA unlike boxing is much more prone to upsets because of the smaller gloves, risks of submissions and the lack of a standing 8 count. So when will people realize that a single loss is no indication that a fighter is overrated or past their prime? It seems to me that fans overreact to wins and losses in this sport more than any other.

Jon Anik
  (1:16 PM)

Salient point there, John. Not much for me to add. Gotta stop bettin' favorites!

David ((SC))

Chost. Josh Koscheck: Total @$$ or just playing mental games with GSP?

Jon Anik
  (1:18 PM)

I think it's a combination. Koscheck isn't the warmest guy in the world, but his #1 motivation is to build up the fight and mess with GSP. The amount of questions in here today on Koscheck suggest that he is succeeding.

Adam (Provo, UT)

Jon, Who is the UFC's Stephen Strasburg? A young must-see talent.

Jon Anik
  (1:18 PM)

I think it's gotta be Jon Jones, until proven otherwise. Young, undefeated (essentially), and just drunk with talent.

Bob (Arizona)

NOT an mma question, but your thoughts on Strasburg? the kid was amazing

Jon Anik
  (1:19 PM)

Just ridiculous. And I don't care that it was against the Pirates. No one else has K'd 14 Pirates this season. He'll destroy the Indians in his next start. Awesome to watch.

Steven (Linlithgow, Scotland)

What will the future hold for Rich Franklin if he loses to Chuck on Saturday?

Jon Anik
  (1:20 PM)

Not much, quite frankly. Franklin only wants to fight for 1-2 more years, and is hoping to make one strong run at the 205 lbs. title. A loss to Liddell, who has dropped 4 of his last 5, would not just jeopardize that. It would eliminate the possibility. Ace has to win. And my pick is Liddell by TKO.

DaAshMan (Toronto)

What fight would you like to see more than any other, promotions notwithstanding?

Jon Anik
  (1:21 PM)

Either GSP vs. Anderson Silva, or Brock Lesnar vs. Fedor Emelianenko. I'm really curious to see Fedor against a modern-day, behemoth heavyweight like Lesnar or Shane Carwin. Wouldn't be easy.

Ken (Pittsburgh)

Chost, can you pull some strings and convince Dana to hold the Koscheck-GSP fight in Pittsburgh this December/NYD. I'd appreciate it.

Jon Anik
  (1:22 PM)

Wish I had that type of pull, Ken. Pittsburgh will get a big show. Just not convinced it will be that fight, or the end-of-year card.

Ali MacDonald (Glasgow, Scotland)

Hi Jon, I am a big fan of MMA Live, the show is great. I know it's early but any knows on the UFC's Scottish debut ?

Jon Anik
  (1:23 PM)

Thanks, Ali. I'm not sure. Feel free to send your question to mmalive@espn.com, and I'll ask McNeil to follow up on it.

The-Scooch (NYC)

Celtics need to win these neext two games at home or else they are in deep trouble. Agree?

Jon Anik
  (1:23 PM)

Absolutely. No chance they take two in L.A.

Geoff (Minneapolis)

Is Brock lesnar still the UFC HW Champ two years from now?

Jon Anik
  (1:24 PM)

In two years, he could conceivably lose the belt and get it back. I don't think he will go without a loss between now and June of 2012.

Tom (Maine)

anyone else excited for Dream 15? no one else is talkin about it but aoki/mousasi/overeem/ and Manhoef on the card, thats pretty sick

Jon Anik
  (1:24 PM)

I'm with ya. Wish we had more time on MMA Live to give all the promotions the coverage they deserve.

Dustin (UT)

Picks for this Weekend Please!

Jon Anik
  (1:27 PM)

Liddell by TKO, Pat Barry to beat Cro Cop (waffling on that one), Paulo Thiago by submission over Martin Kampmann. Also will take Gilbert Yvel, Rory MacDonald, and Tyson Griffin. A lot of competitive, coin-flip fights on the UFC 115 slate.

Baumer (NYC)

Pat Curran vs. Toby Imada tomorrow night, who do you like for the belt?

Jon Anik
  (1:27 PM)

I like Pat Curran in a small upset. Imada has looked great throughout the tournament, but I like Curran's power to prevail. And either way, the winner will lose to the champion, Eddie Alvarez, when they meet during Season 3.

Doug (CO)

So with Kenny being so busy these days with his broadcasting career, do you think this will interfere with his training for the Maynard fight?

Jon Anik
  (1:29 PM)

Absolutely not. And I'm not just saying that. Kenny knows how to prioritize and manage his time. Come mid-July, he will have a full six-week camp, free of distraction, free of MMA Live, and free of everything other than training. He'll be ready.

angelo (texas)

any news on how james toney's training is going

Jon Anik
  (1:29 PM)

King Mo Lawal, who is working with Toney on his wrestling, will be in Bristol tomorrow for MMA Live. So I'll have a lot more info. on that for you next week.

Tom (Maine)

Buy/Sell. Florian will be a full-time broadcaster when his fight career is over?

Jon Anik
  (1:31 PM)

Sell. He will always be in the broadcasting business, but he also has a passion for training and has opened up the Florian Martial Arts Center. That will take up a chunk of his time once he's done fighting.

Alex (DC)

Is there a MMA LIVE pick 'em game for UFC 115?

Jon Anik
  (1:31 PM)

No. Should be back for UFC 116 on July 3. Also hoping to soon announce MMA Live's plans for that mega-fight b/w Lesnar and Carwin.

Julio (Tucson, AZ)

Hey Chost, What?s your all-time favorite KO?? Also, curious as to what are other readers favorite KO?s!! My fav is Cro Cop vs Igor V. & Gonzaga vs Cro Cop!!

Jon Anik
  (1:32 PM)

Just so many to choose from. Don't know where to begin. Henderson's KO of Bisping at UFC 100 was the best one I've seen in person. That final forearm was just vicious. Honorable mention to Yahir Reyes' spinning backfist last year, which I had the pleasure of calling for Bellator.

Austin (Knoxville Tennessee)

Hey Jon! In your time around the fight game, have you ever encountered a fighter that completely blew you off and wanted nothing to do with you as far as an interview of just talking?

Jon Anik
  (1:33 PM)

Not really. And it's great to be able to say that. Mixed martial artists are really among the most accomodating professional athletes I've ever dealt with.

Matt (Las Vegas, NV)

Any word on who/when Machida fights next?

Jon Anik
  (1:34 PM)

Nothing yet, but I'm starting to think it won't be Rampage Jackson.

Brad (Bristol,CT)

Do you have any early feelings about how the Lesnar/Carwin fight will go?

Jon Anik
  (1:35 PM)

Well, I am starting to buy into the Carwin momentum. And he's definitely the more technical boxer. But you just can't simulate a guy like Lesnar in training. July 3rd can't come soon enough.

Justin (New Jersey)

What if Werdum upsets Fedor?

Jon Anik
  (1:35 PM)

I will shave my legs.

Justin (Indianapolis)

Any truth to the rumor that Toney caught King Mo in a standing guillotine? If you don't know could you ask him tomorrow?

Jon Anik
  (1:35 PM)

Hadn't heard that. Will try to remember to ask King Mo tomorrow.

Ryan (Pennsylvania)

Chael Sonnen has been talking A LOT, not just about silva, the guy just runs his mouth. i can't wait for silva to knock him out and shut him up

Jon Anik
  (1:37 PM)

Chael definitely has the gift of gab. Some don't like it. I kinda do. Sometimes he bends the truth and says things strictly to make headlines. But overall, I think his takes on most topics are refreshing and honest. And in this world of athletes offering up sports cliches, I will always have an appreciation for those who deviate from the mean.

Steven (Linlithgow, Scotland)

Any predictions (or even interest) for the the World Cup?

Jon Anik
  (1:38 PM)

Certainly interested, and will watch it whenever it is on. My prediction is the United States - as a 50-1 longshot - will shock the world. Kinda like Spain.

Andrew (Montgomery)

Chost, now that MMA Live has gotten an extension, are fighting for a better start time or having expanded to an hour?

Jon Anik
  (1:39 PM)

I'm not sure, Andrew. Of course selfishly, I'm always asking for more time. But I'm not sure if those conversations are even taking place. Right now, we're happy that ESPN2 is our home through August and we need to make sure the product warrants another extension. Then, we can worry about time slot, etc.

Dan (Chicago)

Jon,Do the hawks take the cup tonight?! Also, I know its down the line, but did you see the UFC 117 card? STACKED!!!!!!! Could be the card of the year!

Jon Anik
  (1:40 PM)

UFC 117 is definitely loaded. I like the Flyers to force a Game 7. But I'm rooting for the Hawks for sure.

Dann (Kenosha, WI)

Is Rothwell done in the UFC if he loses to Yvel?

Jon Anik
  (1:42 PM)

That's a possibility. He won't lose many points for his last defeat to Cain Velasquez. Not many guys are gonna be able to hang w/ Cain. But sure, losing two straight in the UFC could spell the end for Rothwell.

Bobby Buckeye (Cincinnati)

What did you think of Joe Rogan comments at the UFC 114 Q &A about BJ Penn smoking marijuana before he practices BJJ? Maybe that's why he lost to Edgar.

Jon Anik
  (1:43 PM)

I didn't hear a lot of that b/c we were rehearsing for our Weigh-in show. Who knows if that's the case or not? In reading Penn's book, I know he smoked marijuana when he was younger.

Phil Chung (Winnipeg )

Hey JA, Love the show.. I see you in Canada on my dish. So my question, seems like you media types give GSP a hard time cause he grinds out a win. Even though in his last fight he had two submissions locked in and the Hardy wouldn't tap out.. But here Rashad grinds out a win vs Rampage and people say it was a good performance. What is up with that?

Jon Anik
  (1:45 PM)

Thanks, Phil. Rashad has actually gotten his fair share of criticism. Not from me, but a lot of fans were disappointed that he talked one game and fought another. But winning has to be the first priority. In my mind, entertaining is a distant second. That said, I'm not a promoter. My only knock on GSP is that he fights too infrequently. I've always said, barring injury, the belt should be on the line three times per calendar year.

DJ (Atlanta, Ga)

Is Dana White scare to put GSP against Anderson Silva because he thinks GSP may lose?

Jon Anik
  (1:46 PM)

Not at all. I think GSP isn't ready or willing to make the move up to 185. I think you will see St. Pierre move up much later in his career. Hopefully, Anderson Silva is still fighting at that point.

Brad (Bristol,CT)

Jon, why is the fight business(MMA/Boxing) mostly PPV, yet the NFL, NBA, NHL, etc..can show everything on cable? Even the Superbowl is free to everyone. Yet 90% of UFC shows are $45.00. Will we ever see the day the UFC broadcast similar to the NFL?

Jon Anik
  (1:47 PM)

It's a tough reality for combat sports fans, but PPV has been a big part of the game since I can remember. And even though I do think we might see an all-MMA network (like the NFL or MLB network, or NBATV) in the next 5 years, PPV will always be the money driver for the UFC and boxing. Bill Belichick might say it is what it is.

Evan (SLC)

Have you checked out the UFC Magazine?

Jon Anik
  (1:48 PM)

Yes. Quite well done.

Paul (SF, CA)

Who might Rich Franklin fight if he beats Liddell, Machida?

Jon Anik
  (1:48 PM)

That is a possibility. But I think he might get Randy Couture.

Alex (Cleveland)

In response to the "Who is the UFC's Stephen Strasburg?" question, I would say John Hathaway. He's only 22, undefeated in the UFC, and very talented with the heart and skill he showed against Diego Sanchez.

Jon Anik
  (1:49 PM)

A solid choice, but I'm not sure his ceiling is as high as Jon Jones' is. Also don't think he has that dynamic quality that Jones clearly possesses.

Dan (VANcouver)

Who would you match up Lil Nog against next? Thiago Silva?

Jon Anik
  (1:49 PM)

Sure. Or have him run it back with Jason Brilz.

Dustin (UT)

Rampage/Griffin 2 to Headline UFC 120 in England buy or sell?

Jon Anik
  (1:50 PM)

I would buy that. That is definitely a fight Rampage wants. I will ask him about it on Friday. I am scheduled to interview the A-Team cast here in Bristol. Please send me potential questions on Twitter (Jon_Anik)!

Albert (NJ)

Do you think the UFC favors British fighters?

Jon Anik
  (1:52 PM)

No, but they do make a strong push behind guys they believe in. And If I was a promoter, I would be backing Bisping, Hardy, Pearson, and Hathaway, too. I think they are A-level fighters, albeit not elite.

Kristian (Wall Street, NY)

Are people too high on Vitor Belfort? It seems everytime he is looked at as the next great thing, he under delivers.

Jon Anik
  (1:53 PM)

His performances are always memorable and that is why he is so highly thought of. His next appearance will be hugely telling to see how he responds from another layoff and the injury. I still think he's probably the UFC middleweight best-equipped to give Anderson Silva some problems.

Nick(Cali) [via mobile]

Chost .Brian"the beast" Baker will take out your boy Hector Lombard?

Jon Anik
  (1:54 PM)

Hahahaha. Love it. I like the Beast, but if he's the Beast, what is Lombard? The BeastMaster? Anything can happen in MMA, but I'd be very surprised if any middleweight currently on the Bellator roster beat Lombard.

Gunner (Vancouver)

Shogun vs Silva...could that be a possibility?

Jon Anik
  (1:55 PM)

Absolutely. Could happen sooner than you think, too.

Justin (Indianapolis)

UFC 119 rumored for Indianapolis in September. I'm stoked. Who do you think would be a possible headliner?

Jon Anik
  (1:56 PM)

Might see Shogun-Evans on that card.

Anthony (ID)

With the LHW division as stacked as it is, Rampage Jackson will never hold the title again. True or false, in your opinion?

Jon Anik
  (1:56 PM)

Gun to my head, I don't think Rampage will ever be the UFC champion again. But I do believe he will create another opportunity for himself to fight for the belt.

jersey (bucks)

I stayed up late last Thursday and MMALive was not on. AND, you guys didn't post the internet video at the time either. What's the deal?

Jon Anik
  (1:58 PM)

There have been some softball games that have run long, unfortunately. I have posted our updated June schedule on ESPN2 at the top of the chat. We are being shifted around b/c of the World Cup. But the show should always be posted online, late Thursday night/early Friday morning. Not sure why that might've been delayed. Thanks for staying with us!

ROB (JERSEY)

Hector is the Lombard-GHINI. If youre Bjorn would you send him to the potential SF MWGP, as opposed to that pipe dream that is Paulo Filho

Jon Anik
  (1:59 PM)

Yeah, Rob, I think sending him to the potential grand prix would be a good move. I think we are all champing at the bit to see Lombard against a Top 10-12 middleweight.

JOsh (California)

What up J.A. How ya doing? When either Liddell or Franklin wins on Sat. are we gonna hear the same cannon fodder about how that person is BACK! Lets be realistic, neither of these fighters are gonna be able to compete with the top of the 205 food chain. I'm not hating on either of them, I have nothing but respect for both of them, I just don't wanna deal with all the delusions of grandeur. Do you?

Jon Anik
  (1:59 PM)

I would agree that neither Liddell nor Franklin are among the elite light heavyweights in the UFC. And nothing that happens Saturday night will change my mind.

Oliver (England)

If Liddell were to beat Franklin do you think he could still take a run at the belt, if so how many fights away from it would he be.

Jon Anik
  (2:01 PM)

I think Chuck's days of competing for UFC championships are over. Even with a vintage KO this weekend, I'm not sure the UFC/Dana White will ever put him back in a position of contention. He looks lean and in the shape of his life for this fight, but he's still sustained a lot of damage over his last 5 fights. And his prime is done.

Andrew (Montgomery)

Jon, do you get recognized on the street now and if so can you still go shopping like a regular guy?

Jon Anik
  (2:01 PM)

I can barely walk out of my apartment. It's insane.

Jon Anik
  (2:02 PM)

Hahahahahahahaha.

Chris (Bristol, CT)

What up Jon. Who will be in bristol for live this week?

Jon Anik
  (2:02 PM)

Glad you asked b/c KING MO LAWAL makes his Bristol debut! And Florian will be alongside as well. We will interview Chuck Liddell from Vancouver and might also talk to Robbie Lawler.

Kristian (Wall Street, NY)

If Hughes beats Almeida, do you think he gets a top 5 welterweight for one last run at the title for the HOF'er?

Jon Anik
  (2:03 PM)

I don't, Kristian. I think Hughes is 1-2 fights away from calling it quits. Nothing left to prove. And not a ton left in the tank, either.

John (Sioux Falls, SD)

So does Chuck compensate for his weakened chin by taking Rich down to the ground a few time?

Jon Anik
  (2:03 PM)

I don't think so. I'm still calling for Liddell to stand and bang and not do much else.

Roberto (Galveston, TX)

when do you think you'll be in a daytime slot on ESPN

Jon Anik
  (2:04 PM)

Tough to say, Roberto. Because we are a news-and-information show, a daytime slot would be more ideal. But right now, we are early on in the process, and just thankful to have a longer-term commitment on ESPN2.

John (Sioux Falls, SD)

Isn't Lawler the guy you said wasn't so friendly? Is he going to make nice?

Jon Anik
  (2:05 PM)

He is just ornery the week before he fights. Hopefully I can extract a little more out of him this time!

Chris (Bristol, CT)

You should see it Andrew only time theres not a traffic jam in bristol is when anik finally leaves to host the ufc pre shows.

Ali MacDonald (Glasgow, Scotland)

Thanks Jon. If Franklin beats Liddell do you think he'll get a shot at Randy Couture ?

Jon Anik
  (2:06 PM)

I think that is highly possible. But the 2 1/2 month gap b/w Franklin-Liddell and Couture-Toney (at UFC 118, Aug. 28th) could be a deciding factor.

George (Florida)

its all about the ratings Roberto, just keep watching and good things will come

Jon Anik
  (2:06 PM)

Amen, George.

John (Sioux Falls, SD)

No MMA live til Saturday? Does this mean this is a six hour chat today?

Jon Anik
  (2:07 PM)

Hahahaha. I wish. At least you can watch the extended version on ESPN.com late Thurs./early Fri.

Rachel - MMAHotStuff (San Francisco (foggy today))

Saw your msg about the programming changes for MMALive in June. Once Twitter stops freaking out on me I'll make sure I tweet the update in programming times so people know in advance. Seeing softball on but expecting MMALive is a let down to say the least. :) no offense to the softball players.

Jon Anik
  (2:07 PM)

You're the best. I will be tweeting away as well to try to get the word out.

Cameron (Los Angeles)

Is Shogun a better matchup for Rashad then Machida was? Don't you think that Rashad would look to take Shogun down early and often?

Jon Anik
  (2:09 PM)

Kenny Florian has said as much. I just think Shogun will be able to counter Rashad's speed better than Rampage did. The Vegas oddsmakers are firmly behind Shogun with the early line.

Nick(Cali) [via mobile]

How nasty was the dislocated knee of Jared Hess? tough guy kept fighting on one leg.

Jon Anik
  (2:09 PM)

Pretty gross. I ran into Jared two days after it happened. He was at UFC 114 and showed me a picture of the knee on his cell phone. Knee just isn't supposed to go there.

Austin (Knoxville)

Hey Jon! If you were an MMA fighter, what would your entrance song be? Nickname?

Jon Anik
  (2:10 PM)

I would steal Jon Jones' entrance song, Angry Johnny by Poe. And my nickname would probably still be Chost. Or The Anikonda.

David ((SC))

Date not set and their is a line on Rashad vs. Shogun.??? That says something about the state of MMA.

Jon Anik
  (2:11 PM)

Happens all the time. Mayweather-Pacquiao line has been out for months.

Cam (Seattle)

Why should we think that GSP-Kos II will end any other way than their 1st fight? Long night for Kos as GSP is a better wrestler with better standup. how does Kos win? I say GSP by UD.

Jon Anik
  (2:12 PM)

You're right. I guess the only variable for me is that Koscheck is just super-aggressive. And I think he's more willing to get finished than other fighters. Koscheck will put himself out there in order to land a punch. So maybe the fight will exceed our expectations.

Austin (Knoxville)

Anikonda for sure!

Reagan (Charlotte, NC)

Mr. Anik, the standing 8 count hasn't been applied under unified boxing rules for a long time. It certainly doesn't allow for less upsets!

Hayden (Logan, Utah)

Should GSP be fighting someone else? Is Kos really the #1 contender?

Jon Anik
  (2:13 PM)

Well, just like Dan Hardy did, Koscheck emerged from a No. 1 contender's bout. That is enough for me. I hope Paulo Thiago gets a shot eventually.

Jeff (Alabama)

Call me crazy but I can totally see James Toney catching Randy on the way in and knocking him cold.

Jon Anik
  (2:14 PM)

I really hope you're wrong. Also think Couture is too savvy to let that happen. But you never know...

Mike (Cleveland)

Do we ever get to see Tito v Chuck III? Did Tito ever want any part of Lidell or was he just looking for some camera time?

Jon Anik
  (2:15 PM)

I will ask Liddell about that this week on MMA Live. I know he wouldn't mind another chance to shut that mouth. But a lot could depend on the Liddell-Franklin result, and of course Ortiz's health.

David ((SC))

Yeah Boxing just lets you keep fighting after your corner throws in the towel. What do you make of that, by the way?

Jon Anik
  (2:15 PM)

Quite strange. I figured the fight would be stopped once the towel came in. If a UFC cornerman threw a towel into the Octagon, I doubt very much the fight would continue.

Jason (Ellicott City, MD)

Has the sport evolved or has Liddell just gotten really old and thus the heinous decline?

Jon Anik
  (2:17 PM)

It's a combination. Liddell has aged, and some of the wars/knockouts have aged him. But I think Chuck would also acknowledge that he could've done a few things differently to better keep up.

Alex (New Jersey)

Hey JA, I'm back!I see people calling you Chost. What does it mean?

Jon Anik
  (2:17 PM)

Hahahaha. It stands for Chubby Host. Given to me by my twin brother. He thinks it's funnier than I do. But evidently many of you agree with him...

Baumer (NYC)

In New York the ref is under no regulation to stop the fight if the corner throws the towel in

Jon Anik
  (2:18 PM)

Glad you pointed that out.

Jeff (Alabama)

Say what you want about Ortiz, he's a class act on TUF. Puts Rampage to shame.

Jon Anik
  (2:18 PM)

I am not a Tito hater. Ortiz legitimately cares about the success and well-being of the fighters on his team. There is no faking that.

Jeff (Alabama)

Yuri Foreman, the guy who got to fight after the towel was thrown in, showed true heart. The man fought 3 more rounds on a torn ACL! What a tough Jew!

Jon Anik
  (2:19 PM)

That he is.

Jon Anik
  (2:19 PM)

I'm happy for Cotto. He proved a lot of doubters wrong.

Vinod (NYC)

Not going to be ordering 115 this weekend. Need to see better cards on a PPV. Before I'm accused of not being "hardcore" enough, let me say that Franklin-Liddell is not a main event anymore. About 2-3 years ago, it would have been.

Jon Anik
  (2:20 PM)

Sounds logical to me. But I'm buying, b/c you just never know which UFC PPV is gonna be card-of-the-year quality. And I don't want to miss out.

Jason (Ellicott City, MD)

The chost definition has taken the place of when will MMA live get on tv.

Jon Anik
  (2:20 PM)

Hahahahaha. It is nice, Jay, to not have to answer that anymore.

giuseppe (plain fields)

reason to root for Kos. I bet he actually defends the title regularly

Jon Anik
  (2:21 PM)

That you can be sure of. He truly will fight anyone, anywhere. And for a fighter at his level, that isn't the norm.

Brian (Umass)

Throwing in the towel is against the rules in the ufc according the ufc.com rules page

Jon Anik
  (2:22 PM)

...and therefore, they would probably stop the fight/disqualify the fighter.

Reagan (Charlotte, NC)

Rich Franklin better be on the UFC's payroll for life. The man does everything they ask including taking a fight against Liddell that is the meaning of lose-lose.

Jon Anik
  (2:22 PM)

He is the consummate company guy. He really didn't want to take this fight.

Vinod (NYC)

Admit it, JA. The boxing fan in you wants to see Toney KO Couture. I know I do.

Jon Anik
  (2:22 PM)

Hahahahaha. But. No. No. No. No. No.

kale (kansas)

hey jon, i think some mma fans don't understand how good a boxer toney was. i wouldn't be suprised if randy gets knocked down by him only question is can toney finish him on the ground. randy jaw is getting weeker and weeker nog droped him so did vera.

Jon Anik
  (2:24 PM)

No doubt, James Toney is one of more highly-skilled boxers I ever covered. Tremendous speed for a man his size. Just wondering how committed he is, not just to learning some takedown defense, but to being in the best shape of his life come August 28th. He doesn't like to train.

Rory (Chicago)

If Anderson moves up after the Sonnen fight who would you like to see fight for the interim title?

Jon Anik
  (2:25 PM)

Maybe Belfort-Sonnen? Tough to answer at this point in time.

Dano (Bismarck ND)

before today i always thought chost stood for chat host

Jon Anik
  (2:25 PM)

Hahahaha. Well, now you know.

Jeff (MD)

Another boxing question. Any truth to the rumors that Money may be going on hiatus again? This fight is NEVER going to happen.

Jon Anik
  (2:26 PM)

Mayweather is impossible to predict. With anothe $27 million or so now banked, I wouldn't be surprised if he retired again, temporarily or otherwise.

Reagan (Charlotte, NC)

More impressive feat: A.) Someone kayo Lesnar or B) submit BJ Penn or c.) out-strike The Spider or D.) Manhandle GSP?

Jon Anik
  (2:26 PM)

Cool question. I would be most impressed if someone got the better of Anderson Silva on the feet. That dude is just ridiculous, and there is no better boxer in MMA.

Rory (Chicago)

Are my Blackhawks hoisting the cup tonight?

Jon Anik
  (2:27 PM)

Not tonite, but they'll finish her off in Game 7.

Jeff (MD)

Marquardt vs. Belfort

Jon Anik
  (2:27 PM)

Probably more likely, were Silva to get through Sonnen and then vacate the belt.

Zed (Montgomery, AL)

How does one correctly pronounce "chost?" Is it "ch" or "c-host?"

Jon Anik
  (2:27 PM)

Chost. Ch.

Joseph (DC)

Wouldn't GSP be better served fighting a tune up against an 185 pounder before jumping in against Anderson?

Jon Anik
  (2:28 PM)

I think that's probably how the UFC would proceed. Yes.

Clinton (Reno)

If chost originally came from your brother how did it become publicly known?

Jon Anik
  (2:28 PM)

In this very chat room. I think I mentioned it briefly, and dudes picked up on it. And my brother is now in all his glory.

Joseph (DC)

Anderson Silva vs Bones Jones, how long do we have to wait for that one?

Jon Anik
  (2:29 PM)

A long time, unfortunately. The UFC is still proceeding cautiously with Jon Jones. So forecasting a fight against Anderson Silva? It seems worlds away right now.

Brandi (Charlotte, NC)

What's next for Hendo in Strikeforce?

Jon Anik
  (2:30 PM)

A lot of possiblities. Mousasi perhaps? King Mo? TBD. I think it'll become more clear after Shields makes his decision.

David ((SC))

Not enough talk about Pat Berry... If he beats Cro-Cop, imo he is only two wins away from a title shot. Exciting fighter, I like his style.

Jon Anik
  (2:31 PM)

You gotta at least spell his name right, man! Haha. You are right. Get hype for Pat Barry. Nice opportunity for him to make a statement on the PPV this weekend.

Jeff (MD)

T/F: GSP moves to 185 AFTER Spider moves to 205 permanently.

Jon Anik
  (2:31 PM)

Interesting. Probably true, Jeff.

Zed (Montgomery)

Chost, why did you have to set up King Mo for the MMA Live curse?!?

Jon Anik
  (2:32 PM)

That so-called curse ended a long, long time ago. Didn't Rashad just beat Rampage? Florian has won 5 of 6 since we started the show. Couture has won his last two. On and on it goes. Miletich over Denny. :)

william (texas)

hey JA is Cain V. the next contender for the heavywight title?

Jon Anik
  (2:33 PM)

Yes. That is why he's been held out of action since February. Barring an unforseen circumstance, he will get the winner of Lesnar-Carwin.

Michael (Philly)

You've talked about both possibilities, but what is more likely Silva-Shogun or Silva-GSP?

Jon Anik
  (2:33 PM)

Silva-Shogun for sure. And that fight would happen a whole lot sooner than GSP-Silva.

Jeff (MD)

How about Hendo vs. Lawler. That would provide some fireworks.

Jon Anik
  (2:34 PM)

And is another possibility. I just think Strikeforce has bigger plans for Hendo. Not meant as a knock on Lawler, but I think the Mousasi or King Mo fights are just bigger.

Rory (Chicago)

Didn't see your pick for the other spike fight. Who ya got Wiman or Danzig?

Jon Anik
  (2:35 PM)

I guess I'll go Danzig.

Ken (Pittsburgh)

Rumble Johnson is recovering from his knee injury, and dude blew up! He easily weighs 210+. Do you think he'll ever fight at 170 again? I doubt it. But he would be a great fit in the MW division.

Jon Anik
  (2:36 PM)

I hope his future lies at 185. But Rumble has made no concrete indications that anything is imminent.

Finn (Seattle,Wa)

Didn't Franklin move up to 205 to escape Silva? If Spider moves up, why not drop back down? He's a better fit there anyway

Jon Anik
  (2:37 PM)

He moved up b/c he really wanted to make a run at a belt. Part of that, for certain, was the realization that beating A. Silva was not in the cards.

Trav (P-Town)

Chost, Give me 1 good reason that Strikeforce shouldn't rematch King Mo - Mousasi? King Mo only wrestled him down and did literally No damage.

Jon Anik
  (2:38 PM)

Because they gave Hendo a lot of money. You're right, though. I would like to see a rematch.

Rob (Rocky Hill, CT)

Hendo vs. Mayhem...someone needs to shut him up with a ridiculously late forearm to the face.

Jeff (MD)

Mir/Lesnar III if Lesnar loses to Carwin?

Jon Anik
  (2:38 PM)

A realistic possibility.

Derek (St pete)

Dan with espn boxing has his freaks what do you call us????

Jon Anik
  (2:40 PM)

Open to suggestions, but they'll have to wait until next week! Don't forget, MMA Live is on ESPN2 on Saturday this week (1 AM PT/4 AM ET). Full details later today on Twitter (Jon_Anik). Being moved around a bit for the World Cup. Show will be up on espn.com late tomorrow night. Thanks for the extended time today. Until next week, enjoy UFC 115, Bellator, Strikeforce and the rest. And don't text and drive. -JA
