Chat with Terry Blount

Terry Blount
  (2:01 PM)

What's on your mind folks. Are you Team Delana or Team JoLo? Is Denny better than JJ now? How about Danica's 2nd-place run at Texas Saturday.

Mark (NC)

the delana wears the firesuit in the family comment, isn't that a compliment for delena and harvick being whipped?

Terry Blount
  (2:03 PM)

First of all, I think people are taking it way too seriously. Joey was trying to be funny in his anger. But it is fun. DeLana now has T-shirts about it. And KH had a great comeback, saying, "I think he wants to fight DeLana more than me."

dz (phx, az)

hey terry. do you believe the hms issues stem from the transition to the spoiler? thanks buddy.

Terry Blount
  (2:04 PM)

It could be a little bit, but really I just think JGR has gained ground on them. No one stays dominant forever. What happens is other teams experiment more and eventually hit on something, but the team that's winning all the time is a little afraid to change too much.

Michael (FL)

When will nascar fix the point system and reward drivers for moving to the front?

Terry Blount
  (2:05 PM)

NASCAR still needs more points for winning. It also should not award any points for finishing worse than 30th.

Jimmy (NY)

Where do you see Kahne racing next year? It seems like Martin is going out of his way to tell everyone he's still gonna be at Hendrick next year in the 5 car.

Terry Blount
  (2:07 PM)

This is a very odd situation. I would have put Kasey in the 5, but it looks like that won't happen next year. I think moving him to another team for one year is a mistake. But there's a lot of moving pieces here still to put in place. I can tell you this: Kasey's last day at RPM can't come soon enough in his eyes.

Ironhead Forever (New York)

Have they put out that fire yet in Simona de Silvestri's car?

Terry Blount
  (2:09 PM)

That's was a very scary situaton and a horrible response by a safety crew that normally does an excellent job. But I do want to praise the man who pulled Simona out. He suffered burns on his face, but stayed with it until he got her out.

Zack (MI)

Who wins first? Truex, Reautimann, Keselowski, Kahne, or Burton?

Terry Blount
  (2:10 PM)

Good question. I'll say Burton. Interesting side note: Seven of the drivers in the top 12 haven't won a race this year.

Tracy (CT)

I'm getting ready for the next Pocono race. I've got the perfect plan. Don't watch till the last 40 or so laps!!

Terry Blount
  (2:12 PM)

Please, please. Will someone do the right thing and shorten those races to 400 miles. Matiolli says his fans want it to stay 500 miles. Who are his fans? Lewis and Clark?

Ryan (Arlington, TX)

Terry, What are your thoughts on Junior maybe finishing his career at RCR? I thought Hendrick would be a good fit for him, now I don't think so. I think RCR maybe better for him. Junior just seems to be not the corporate type like Johnson, Gordon, and so on.

Terry Blount
  (2:13 PM)

I agree with this more and more with each passing race. Jr just doesn't fit in with the buttoned-down style at Hendrick. He just doesn't look comfortable.

Chuck (South Carolina)

In the long run, who do you see making a bigger splash in Cup level: Ambrose or Hornish Jr? Why?

Terry Blount
  (2:15 PM)

I definitely would have picked Ambrose at the start of this season, but he has struggled and MWR hasn't been as good as I expected. Sam had a nice run at Pocono, but I'm not convinced. If he does that a few more times, I'll believe he's making progress.

Manny (West Palm Beach)

Just like Dale jr doesn't fit into Henricks system why would anyone think he's gonna fit in with Harvick-Burton-Boyer? Isn't Dale's best option Jr motorsports?

Terry Blount
  (2:16 PM)

No, starting your own team is far more sdifficult. I know Tony did it, but he took over an existing Cup team.

Matthew (Columbia, NJ)

Will Biffle and/or Edwards make the chase?

Terry Blount
  (2:17 PM)

They both could make the Chase, but making the playoff and truly contending for the title are two different things. And I don't see either of them contending at the moment.

Jessica (PA)

Mikey Waltrip has seemed to drop off the face of the earth. Is he an owner who sits on the pit box like Joe Gibbs or does he stay away from the races like Teresa Earnhart?

Terry Blount
  (2:18 PM)

No one stays away as much as Teresa, excpet maybe Dietrich Mateschitz of Red Bull.

John (NC)

I think JR should bring up his nationwide team and get Kenseth when his contract is up. Those two (despite being from totally different backgrounds) seem to dislike most of the attention other drivers get. They may be quite successful working together.

Terry Blount
  (2:19 PM)

Sounds good, but it's all about sponsors and hiring enough quality people to make it work. No easy task.

Jason (IL)

Do you see Denny staying with JGR for his whole career?

Terry Blount
  (2:19 PM)

I don't know about his whole career, but he's not going anywhere any time soon.

Rob F (Hoboken, NJ)

Is Logano at all embarrassed by his fathera??s continued antics? At 20 I woulda??ve sat my father down and removed his hard card for gooda?

Terry Blount
  (2:20 PM)

I think Joey showed Tom on Sunday that he doesn't need him to fight his battles for him anymore. I think you'll see a lot less of Tom in the future.

Matthew (Columbia, NJ)

Who is at fault for the "big one" at pocono?

Terry Blount
  (2:22 PM)

It looked like AJ, but the real fault is double-file restarts at the end of races. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for DFR, but wrecks will happen. My problem with the wreck is it showed all the safety problems at Pocono.

dz (phx, az)

how are shops different than one another? like mcmurry was quoted saying that he like the egr environment more than his previous employer (rousch).

Terry Blount
  (2:25 PM)

Some teams are more regimented and others have a looser atmosphere. Some are military-like with negative reinforcement. Others take a softer approach. I think you can guess which of those two is which.

Saul (Sacramento)

12 Races to the Chase, 88 Team is in 16 Place, 87 points from 12 spot. With 12 to go, will the 88 Make the Team? If they do not, what will be the impact to Chase?

Terry Blount
  (2:26 PM)

It won't be easy, but the 88 is in a much better spot than it was a year ago. They were 245 points out at this spot last year, completely out of Chase contention. By the way, I just gave you a preview of wehat I'm going to say today on NASCAR Now.

Doug (Maumee Ohio)

How is it that a close relative can be on pit road when cars are still moving. Joey's Dad needs to stay out of his sons NASCAR on track business!

Terry Blount
  (2:29 PM)

I think that's what he was told. Stay out of the way. Joey's a big boy now.

lee (atlanta, ga)

what in the world was stewart talking about re the restarts? harvick pulled off one of the best i've ever seen sunday.

Terry Blount
  (2:30 PM)

Tony is frustrated and angry about all the wrecks on late restarts. His point was he's going to start driving crazy also if that's what it takes.

Russell (Chandler, AZ)

Don't you think people have to accept the fact that Dale jr is never gonna get back to his 2004 winning ways? Nascar has changed and he is way older. Isn't 18th place Dale jr the new norm?

Terry Blount
  (2:32 PM)

I think he's better than 18th, but his days of contending for the championhip may be over.

Sam (VT)

Who do you think has the upper hand at Michigan this week? Does the 88 get a good finish?

Terry Blount
  (2:33 PM)

It's the site on his last win two years ago and he was 3rd at Michigan last August. But do I expect him to win? No.

Sherrie (NC)

Terry, I don't think Stewart/Haas will be happy with Hendricks if they stick Kahne there, whats your opinion?

Terry Blount
  (2:34 PM)

I don't think it helps SHR if they put Kasey there for one year, then he leaves with the sponsor. Tony needs to know they would keep a sponsor and have someone ready to step in as the driver in 2012.

Jeremy (Port Angeles, WA)

Danica's race at Texas Motor Speedway was her best indycar race from start to finish.

Terry Blount
  (2:35 PM)

Without question, including the win at Japan, which was a fuel mileage deal. And she admitted it. I was there and it was far and away the best I've ever seen here race.

Brian (Richmond, Ky.)

As a Dale Jr. fan, it kills me to say this, but I think he's the Kyle Petty of his generation and not the Michael Andretti or Al Unser Jr.

Terry Blount
  (2:37 PM)

Kyle is a great guy, but Jr is far better than Kyle was.

Mike (NY, NY)

will mark martin make the chase?

Terry Blount
  (2:37 PM)

Yes, but I don't see him contending for the title unless the 5 gets on a roll this summer.

Vinnie (ATL)

Can we get an IRL question? What body style will be implemented? Does TK owe Danica payback? Will anyone compete with Penske and Ganassi? Can Andretti get it together?

Terry Blount
  (2:40 PM)

The Andretti is getting it together, as we saw in Texas. I think the advisory panel may pick more than one chassis design. I don't think the TK-DP deal will keep going. Michael won;t be too happy if TK takes out his teammate in the next race.

Tyler (Darlington, SC)

Why is Harvick not in the discussion of the championship? We hear about Hamlin, Busch, Johnson, and Gordon, but Harvick has only finished outside the top 13 once this season and that was brake problems at Martinsville.

Terry Blount
  (2:41 PM)

Harvick doesn't get mentioned as much because he hasn't won as much. He'll start the Chase a little behind the others, but once the playoff begins, it's all about consistency, so he definitely has a shot at it.

Stephen (Ca)

History as show Havick does not do well the first part of the year and really struggles in may then goes on tho much better second half. Are the RCR buch going to have even a better 2nd half?

Terry Blount
  (2:42 PM)

The bottom line is they need to win more races. if they do, RCR will be right there in the talk with JGR and Hendrick.

Ricky (Yuba City)

Guess Who? Biffle. What does the Biff have to do to climb in the points standings? Where do you see Biffle ending up??

Terry Blount
  (2:43 PM)

What Biff has to do is have a better car. The new engine may help, but I didn't think it made a difference at Pocono.

John (Illinois)

Was there anything keeping Kasey Kahne's car inside the track, other than those bushes (is there a hidden fence in the bushes?)

Terry Blount
  (2:45 PM)

Just the wall. If he has gotten in the trees we might have witnessed a tragedy. The place really is a dinosaur.

Brian (Richmond, Ky.)

Think Honda will have engine competition in 2012 or 2013 at Indy?

Terry Blount
  (2:46 PM)

Yes. I know several manufacturers are considering it. Audi might be one of them.

Zach (Indiana)

Do you think Walmart will sponsor Jeff Gordon in 2011?

Terry Blount
  (2:47 PM)

It's possible, but I do find that a little strange. I'm guessing Jeff hasn't set foot in a Wal-Mart is 20 years.

Lonnie (AL)

This is a huge racing weekend with the Canadian GP, LeMans and Nascar at Michigan. Does the Nascar gang follow those other series?

Terry Blount
  (2:48 PM)

So do and some don't. I know a lot of the Cup drivers watch the F1 races in Europe on Sunday mornings.

JOhn (CA)

Hi Terry. Any ideas on where Elliott Sadler drives in 2011?

Terry Blount
  (2:50 PM)

No guarantee he'll drive anywhere in Cup. If so, it will be on a lesser team.

Zach (Indiana)

When do you think Hendrick will get their next win, and who will win?

Terry Blount
  (2:50 PM)

Maybe JJ on Sunday ay Michigan.

Dave (Virginia)

Been to Pocono a few times, and while it is a great scenic place to go, you are spot on about it being a dinosaur and the races being too long...What are the chances NASCAR gives them an ultimatum to update and shorten or they take at least one race away?

Terry Blount
  (2:52 PM)

NASCAR won't take an race away, unfortunately. And they let Matiolli call the shots on the length of the race. They should insist on making it 400 miles, but they won't.

kev (tally)

What kind of lineup do you see at RPM next year?

Terry Blount
  (2:53 PM)

Impossible to say right now. They are just hoping to survive. It's not a good situation.

Justin (North Carolina)

Do you think Jimmie Johnson's days of dominance are over, 5 in a row not so likely now?

Terry Blount
  (2:54 PM)

I thought that last year and he proved me wrong. I'm not about to count him out yet.

Matthew (Columbia, NJ)

Would Mark Martin ever consider going back to Roush?

Terry Blount
  (2:55 PM)

Maybe, but would Roush wants to sign a driver in his mid 50s?

Gene (Ohio)

Who's your pick for Eldora?

Terry Blount
  (2:55 PM)

Tony

Zach (Indiana)

Where will Kasey Kahne end up next year, when do you think they will make an announcement?

Terry Blount
  (2:58 PM)

Hendrick said he hoped to have it all wrapped up by the end of May. Since that didn't happen, it tellls me they still are trying to fit all the pieces together. I thought all along Kasey would end up in the 5. Martin insists he's staying, so something surprising is going down here soon.

jerry (pa.)

how about budweiser and dale jr. to rcr?

Terry Blount
  (2:59 PM)

It sounds good, but it isn't that easy. Jr is under contract with Amp and National Guard for two more years at Hendrick. Would they let him go? they are paying big bucks, more than $15 million a year each.

Gene (Ohio)

#5, #39 and #12 were all unsponsored at Pocono and #24 is crying about budget cuts. How bad is sponsorship situation in SPrint Cup?

Terry Blount
  (3:01 PM)

Bad, but part of the economic times. Cup will have to slim down because companies are not going to pay the huges amount they have paid over the last 10 years.

nicole (virginia)

who will make the chase and who won't make it?

Terry Blount
  (3:02 PM)

Tony will get in. One of the Ford drivers might fall out.

Eric (Michigan)

did Denny Hamlin pass Jimmie Johnson as the guy to beat this season?

Terry Blount
  (3:03 PM)

I don't know if he passed him, but he certainly has pulled even.

Gene (Ohio)

Why did Charlotte Motors Speedway stop calling themselves Lowes Motorsport Speedway?

Terry Blount
  (3:03 PM)

Because Lowe's stop paying them millions of dollars to have their name on the place.

Eric (Michigan)

will a Ford win a race in 2010?

Terry Blount
  (3:04 PM)

Yes. I don't see Kenseth, Biff and Carl going winless all season.

Brian (Richmond, Ky.)

Can Mattias Ekstrom win at Sonoma in the 83?

Terry Blount
  (3:05 PM)

I doubt it, but he probably will give them a decent finish.

Jolt (KC)

What's more likely? The 88 and JR Motorsports to Cup with Dale Jr. driving or Martin leaving the 5 to open up the seat for K-9?

Terry Blount
  (3:06 PM)

Neither or those scenarios is likely.

Terry Blount
  (3:07 PM)

Gotta run folks. Off to to NASCAR Now. Good questions today. Watch the show at 6 pm ET. I'll talk about Hamlin, Junior and Danica. Take care. Peace.
