Chat with Andrew Feldman

Andrew Feldman
  (4:00 PM)

Happy Monday! Been a busy day here over at ESPN.com with an ESPN Inside Deal taping this morning, but I'm here, ready to answer all your questions, so lets get started.

Phil I., Howard L., Daniel N., Mike M., et all (Las Vegas, NV)

Thank God we faded that bad beat last night

Andrew Feldman
  (4:01 PM)

Pretty incredible that everyone had some much action on Dwan winning, but hey, it makes things interesting. Gary Wise has a great column coming out about some of the other prop bets and who's involved, so look out for that later today or early tomorrow.

seth (staten island)

So what is the big announcement regarding live streaming this year that you said you would announce today

Andrew Feldman
  (4:03 PM)

ESPN3 will be bringing you five final table streamed live from the 2010 World Series of Poker. The events we'll be streaming are: $25K six-handed on July 3, $2,500 no-limit hold 'em on June 26, $1,500 on June 27, $1,500 on June 30, $3,000 triple chance on July 1.

Erik (Easton, PA)

How much does Tom Dwan have on the line with prop bets. I saw online earlier today that Mike Matasow thanked the winner for saving poker pros millions of dollars by Dwan losing.

Andrew Feldman
  (4:04 PM)

I would estimate, not know for sure, that Dwan has more than $6 million in prop bets regarding him winning a bracelet. Gary has that info and we'll get it up soon.

Austen (Md)

Was there any talk of trying to buy out of the bracelet bet with Dwan at any time during the FT?

Andrew Feldman
  (4:05 PM)

Not during, but I do know that some players bought each other's action before the final table last night so that they wouldn't have to deal with a sweat if he got close.

Paul (Sheboygan, WI)

Has Annette Obrestad played in any events yet? Everybody said that she was the girl to watch and I still have not heard a thing about her aside from playing in a tournament at the Venetian.

Andrew Feldman
  (4:06 PM)

Annette has been in action over the weekend, but no success just yet. It's coming, be patient.

Matt (Montreal)

What was Hellmuth's reaction to getting eliminated 15th in event 8? Statesman-like or same old insult-laden tirade?

Andrew Feldman
  (4:07 PM)

Hellmuth kept his cool. Obviously he wasn't happy, but he reacted calmly and was happy with how he played. The new phil hellmuth...maybe...

Willy Gee (Vermont)

Who would win in a drinking contest, you or Men the Master?

Andrew Feldman
  (4:08 PM)

Men The Master. He can drink Coronas for as long as Phil Laak played during his endurance challenge. I cannot.

Kevin (Syracuse)

For those who don't have ESPN3 in the US (thanks, Time Warner) and those outside the US, will there be someone handling the ESPN3 streaming like there has been in years past?

Andrew Feldman
  (4:09 PM)

I don't believe so, but not sure about that. I'll try to have an answer on that tomorrow. Keep in mind those sites you were watching on the past were basically taking the feed without permission. (some of them, not all)

Ryan (NY)

Unfortunately my WSOP debut will have to wait till next summer. Seems like the $1000, $1500 NL events are getting good turnouts. Is the WSOP happy with the turn outs, with event 3 being almost 2000 less than last year?

Andrew Feldman
  (4:10 PM)

They are happy with the turnouts. As Seth Palansky (WSOP Media Director) told me on the podcast, you can't really compare the 6K to the 4.3K of this year. There are seven $1,000 events and players can come any weekend to play. Their goal is to bring more people out to Vegas to be part of the action and I think in the end, overall participation numbers will be up.

Moneyman8000 (Fairfield CT)

Why are you never on Poker Road? Does ESPN not allow it?

Andrew Feldman
  (4:10 PM)

Never been asked...I was on the Poker Beat once...and was not asked back. I guess Gary Wise gets all that love.

Keith (Fairfield)

What are some of your favorite non-poker related things to do in Vegas?

Andrew Feldman
  (4:11 PM)

Wait, there are things other than poker?

Shelt (MO)

The other night the Aussie Millions 09 was aired and Ivey says he doesn't consider himself the best. Any idea who he does consider the best or was he just being modest? If being modest, who might he pick if he had to pick someone else?

Andrew Feldman
  (4:14 PM)

He's being modest. If 10 out of the 10 best players besides Ivey think that Ivey's the best...he's the best. If he really doesn't think that, I'm not sure who he'd give the edge to, but I bet it would be someone like Patrik or Barry.

tyler (snohomish,wa)

how has bertrand grospellier done so far? i picked him to win the main event last year and he didn't do that bad

Andrew Feldman
  (4:15 PM)

Gah. Elky, my second round fantasy pick, just cashed in his first event over the weekend. He's dangerous in any event, but I really need some results out of him soon or else he might get the boot from the roster.

Corey (Las Vegas)

Wait, so....the Main Event final table wont be streamed live on ESPN3?

Andrew Feldman
  (4:17 PM)

Actually, as of now, I have no idea about the answer to that question. I'm assuming that if we decide to air it live, we'll make some sort of announcement late summer. The five that we're airing are the preliminary events of the WSOP...sorry for the lack of info.

Kelly (San Diego)

Has Dennis Phillips entered any events this year?

Andrew Feldman
  (4:17 PM)

He has, but he was also sent down to the LAPT Peru to captain a PokerStars sponsored team event.

Eric (Tampa)

Watching old poker the other day and saw the Full Tilt basketball jerseys. Anyone wearing anything that bad this year?

Andrew Feldman
  (4:18 PM)

Players couldn't wear those jerseys anymore even if they wanted to. They violate the WSOP player policy on patch-size restrictions.

Austen (Md.)

So, I paid top dollar for Jason Mercier in my fantasy draft, where the hell is he?

Andrew Feldman
  (4:18 PM)

He just got back into town this weekend. Prepare for dominance.

Rafiki (Somalia)

What percentage of Poker Edge podcasts guests has Phil Gordon heard of before they come on the show? 20%?

Andrew Feldman
  (4:19 PM)

I'll take the over. Probably more like 95% if not higher.

Stan (Andover, MA)

I find the idea of staking intriguing. Is it always a deal where someone stakes a player at the outset and the staker gets money if the player cashes? What if a player makes the final table - would he sell pieces of himself at that point as a kind of insurance in case he doesn't make the big money that starts around 3rd place?

Andrew Feldman
  (4:24 PM)

loaded question, but let me give it a shot. First off, if I stake you for 100%, we usually set a cut before the event begins. So for example, if we say the cut is 50%, you win $500 in a $10 buy-in, my cut is $250. The player almost always will earn something for his work. If a player makes the final table, he can sell pieces, but it really doesn't make a lot of sense at that point.

Geoff (Utica, NY)

Any word on whether there are bracelet and World Cup parlay bets? But seriously, do you think the international poker contingency will miss any events to focus on the World Cup, considering the WSOP is every year.

Andrew Feldman
  (4:26 PM)

Haha, I'm sure there are/will be. As much as the world will be paying attention to the world cup, there are plenty of TVs around the Rio for players to watch...I'm going with no, they won't miss a beat.

Kevin (Syracuse)

Maybe an audio stream of the Main Event final table like previous years? Dwan and Norman Chad will be at the same table in the 10k Stud 8 this afternoon, what do you think they'll be talking about?

Andrew Feldman
  (4:27 PM)

Whatever punchline he's working on for this season of WSOP broadcasts. Or nothing. He might just say nothing. Or Squadoosh.

Jason Lawless (Lagrange, OH)

Do you know when and what events will be broadcasted on espn besides 50k and main event?

Andrew Feldman
  (4:27 PM)

The tournament of champions will also be broadcast on ESPN this summer.

Braden (Ann Arbor, MI)

Why is it that we haven't seen any notable players go from Full Tilt to PokerStars, or vice versa? Do you think something like that will start to happen at some point?

Andrew Feldman
  (4:30 PM)

This was something I was actually discussing this weekend. We haven't seen much poaching at all from site to site and at this point, I believe that's just based on the number of players endorsed in general. In the long run it will happen, but I don't think that we'll see any major trades anytime soon.

Norman (Rio)

Do I pay for the 10k stud 8 out of my own pocket or does ESPN pick up the tab, and then do I get to broadcast the playback if I win?

Andrew Feldman
  (4:31 PM)

Out of your own pocket, Norman. You cashed last year, why don't you tell me what you did with the money...If you win the event, i bet somehow it'll get a second or two on TV. Or at least a witty comment from Lon.

Corey (Las Vegas)

Will the tournament of champions actually have a decent structure or will it be like last years and be a crapshoot at the final table?

Andrew Feldman
  (4:32 PM)

For a freeroll, it'll have a decent structure. That said, it's not going to allow a ton of play, but it'll be enough so that everyone won't complain. I hope.

Andrew (WI)

Phil Laak is not human.

Andrew Feldman
  (4:33 PM)

Agreed. 115 hours. That's unreal. I wonder how long he'll sleep tonight/today/tomorrow/this week

MAtt (Cleveland)

Daniel Negreanu ripped PokerNews for their lack of quality updates this year, and he's totally right. Have they responded?

Andrew Feldman
  (4:34 PM)

There's no need to respond. The PN team is well run and each of those on site really do their best. If they make a couple mistakes, so be it, but day in and day out, all they're doing is trying to bring the life of the WSOP to a computer screen for fans to follow. I give 'em all the credit in the world for their efforts.

Sarge (Lees Summit, MO)

I know Laak stopped after 115 hours. But I never heard how he finished. How much did he win/lose?

Andrew Feldman
  (4:35 PM)

When I checked out the stream early this morning (before he quit), he was up at least a couple grand. I'll try and find out for you by tomorrow.

Mike (Utah)

Will the 1500 NL being shown on ESPN3 raise the amount of entries?

Andrew Feldman
  (4:36 PM)

It might, but I wouldn't expect it to be the catalyst that would bring in another thousand or two. We're definitely looking forward to some great finals tables though this summer. However, if we're talking about the $25K, it might add a couple more players to the field as there will be potential endorsement opportunities on the line.

Brian (East Hanover)

When will Wicked Chops release the UB list, and do you think it is legit?

Andrew Feldman
  (4:37 PM)

It's legit. They'll release it when they want to. It's a nice chip to hold on to as well...

Mike (Las Vegas)

Is the 1K donkament going to finally be Phil G's breakthrough for a bracelet?

Andrew Feldman
  (4:39 PM)

Now wouldn't that be a story. Would you really care though? What's the difference between a $1,000 event with 3K players and a $1,500 event with 2,300 that Dwan should've won last night? Is there that much of a difference?

Russ (Ohio)

Hearing that Matt Matros won the $1500 limit event brought back memories of "Jackpot Jay" from the early days of ESPN poker coverage, see as how Matros was Jay's favorite player. Do any of the current ESPN poker folks keep up with Jay at all?

Andrew Feldman
  (4:40 PM)

I actually ran into Jay in Bristol last year. Always a nice guy, doesn't play much poker anymore...and we still never saw the release of his book...Remember he was playing on Captain Cooks or something like that? Memories...

Hamilton (On the back 9)

Laak was up about $6,500 at the end. Negreanu's issue was that it should be more chip counts, less updates. Daniel or anyone else with a good phone can get their chip counts out to their fans and followers instantly, it's called Twitter.

Andrew Feldman
  (4:41 PM)

Thanks. And blatant promo for my twitter feed: @ESPN_Poker.

Andrew Feldman
  (4:41 PM)

Couple more and I gotta run...

Fitz (Buffalo)

Any word on whether other poker pros are lining up to get the mind coach services of Sam Chauhan? Could he become the Butch Harmon (swing coach for many top golfers) of the poker world?

Andrew Feldman
  (4:42 PM)

I don't know how many people Sam can actually take on considering he always mentions how he gives them personal service, but I do know he has turned away some people he felt he couldn't work with. With his teachings, there's no reason he couldn't be the Butch Harmon of poker.

Austen (Md.)

If Norman Chad wins the Stud 8 World Championship bracelet wouldn't that pretty much prove poker is NOT a skill game?

Andrew Feldman
  (4:42 PM)

Watch Norman play for a little while and then we'll talk. He's always been a stud player...well before the poker boom.

dan (san diego) [via mobile]

Did durrrr hit the online or high stakes felt after busting last night like ivey did after the main in november?

Andrew Feldman
  (4:43 PM)

Great question, but I have no idea. I'll be watching for that the next time around.

Lisa (Portland)

Any news on how the rally was received in Olympia WA? It didn't look like much of a turnout (bummer).

Andrew Feldman
  (4:44 PM)

Turnout was definitely a smaller one, but hopefully their voices were heard. Online poker players in general are pretty apathetic (no offense anyone), so getting a couple out there had to be a big win to start. The ruling should come in a couple of weeks.

Dave (Akron)

Over under on when we will get Hellmuth's first huge blow up? It's gotta be building up, right?

Andrew Feldman
  (4:46 PM)

I'm leaning towards the idea that it won't happen until his main event bust...right in time for all the cameras to be rolling. But yeah...it has to be building.

Irving (New York)

andrew....whats doin kid?

Andrew Feldman
  (4:46 PM)

Nothing much Irving. How are you?

Jobin (Quincy)

Feldman give me your dream 9-handed WSOP final table, ratings-wise.

Andrew Feldman
  (4:49 PM)

Changes every year (or week), but let's give it a shot...Hellmuth, Negreanu, Matusow, Doyle, Ivey, Liv Boeree, Dwan, Annette and Moneymaker

Andrew Feldman
  (4:51 PM)

Ok everyone, thanks for all the questions today. I'll be back tomorrow at the same time and I'll take all your questions then. In the meantime, watch out for Ivey tonight in the $10K and Phil Gordon in the donkament...both of them are returning for Day 3 tomorrow.
