Chat with LZ Granderson

LZ Granderson
  (3:15 PM)

Yo, sorry peeps, had log in issues

LZ Granderson
  (3:15 PM)

Let's roll

Cooper (Detroit)

As a Detroit Pistons fan also, what would you like for Joe D to do to get the Pistons back to a championship calibur team?

LZ Granderson
  (3:19 PM)

First thing that has to be done is move Rip. If Ben Gordon is the future at the 2, then start him, give him and give him starter minutes so his confidence returns. Second, you have to move Tay for the same reasons with regards to Charlie V. Last year was tough not just from an injury perspective but you had guys who were signed to a lot of money in undefined roles. And then toughness in the front court. Ben's great attitude wise but he's not the same player and can't be relied upon in the same way. I like what Max brings but he's too short for extended minutes. So, a big guy with toughness like a Haywood would be a great start.

Chioke Hassan (Baltimore,Md)

Dear LZCould you see Jerry Sloan retireing now that the season is over?

LZ Granderson
  (3:21 PM)

My first thought is, as long as Sloan can move he'll coach. He just loves it. But then he's also at the point in his life where he needs to know he has a chance to get the one thing that's eluded him--a ring. What happens in this offseason is important I think. If they're talented--and let's face it, they were hurt against the Lakers so this year is not a fair assessment--but if Boozer comes back, or they get bigger, I can see Sloan sticking around for more years for sure.

Dave (Boston)

do you really think NBA free agents would take less money?

LZ Granderson
  (3:25 PM)

Well, veteran free agents do it all of the time for a chance to win a ring. Especially if they've already made a lot of money, like Malone and Payton a few years ago with the Lakers. I think what you realy want to know is, will guys entering their prime do that. And I'm willing to say yes, depending on the situation. I think a guy like Joe Johnson or David Lee, guys who know they can't win it by themselves would take less to play with a superstar that can win rings. But if those guys don't have those opportunities, then they're going to the highest bidder. Egocentric guys like Amare should be taking less because they're not max talent, but won't because they equate money with respect.

Tom (Chicago)

Do you really think a player's agent and union would really allow him to take less money than a team would offer?

LZ Granderson
  (3:27 PM)

As far as the agent's concerned, it all depends on the goals and relationship between the two. If you have a guy who can make a lot of money in endorsements, then you can think about a smaller NBA paycheck to win rings, which ideally, would make a player even more marketable. But if you have a second or third tier guy who is not a household name, then that's not likely to happen. Which, BTW, I think is too bad, because again, winning rings make you more marketable. If you're rich on a loser no one sees, well...

Tom Coughlin [via mobile]

LZ if you're not 5 minutes early to the chat, you're late!

LZ Granderson
  (3:28 PM)

I was soooo late, me bad

Bobo McCoy (Atlantis)

Alright so a few weeks ago the Hawks owner made a comment regarding Lebron James and was fined(shocker). He basically said he'd love Lebron and would pay the tax for a player like him(well who wouldn't?). Is there greater than a .08% chance he'd come to Atlanta? Atlanta is a big Market, Horford and Smith rival any other sidekicks long term he could find, and Atlanta could sign and trade either a package of Marvin and some picks or Joe Johnson and make Cleveland less depressed.

LZ Granderson
  (3:31 PM)

I'd hate to tell you but Atlanta's a terrible fit for Lebron, at least as is. This is a guy who is a dominant scorer but is not a pure shooter and so him joining a team with other streak shooters with questionable team D and no point guard to speak of, is just trouble. I love Atlanta, but until they get a PG, they're just gonna struggle against good teams that can force them into a half court game. And right now I think they're stuck with Bibby, unless they can trick somebody to take his ridiculous contract.

Walter (Phoenix)

Can we already call Rafa Nadal the greatest clay court player of all time or doees he need to surpass Borg first?

LZ Granderson
  (3:34 PM)

He's already passed Borg in my mind, as far as being the greatest clay court player ever because I'm looking at not only the French but all of the Masters titles he's won on clay as well. Not to mention the unbeaten streaks and his record against another great clay court player--Federer.

Jason (Tampa)

Do you see the lakers making a splash in Free Agency via trades or smaller named players?

LZ Granderson
  (3:35 PM)

The Lakers have the highest payroll in the league and have no prob spending money to stay on top, so yes.

Tyler (Indianapolis)

When the Pacers finally get rid of Jim O'Brien (hopefully soon) could you see a former assistant like Mike Brown or Mike Woodson stepping back in to become the coach?

LZ Granderson
  (3:35 PM)

I would think they would bring in a new guy, like a Mark Jackson.

Cowboy Joe West [via mobile]

LZ, the chat is moving too slow. It's pathetic and embarrassing.

LZ Granderson
  (3:36 PM)

Are you texting and driving?

mark a (nj)

go lakers!!

LZ Granderson
  (3:36 PM)

You mean, Grand Valley State University Lakers?

Mark Sanchez (NY)

Where do you see the Knicks in 5 or 10 years?

LZ Granderson
  (3:37 PM)

You mean besides in New York?Needless to say what happens in July will define their next 5 years, regardless of what Lebron does.

Mark Sanchez (NY)

Jets, Patriots - who ya got?

LZ Granderson
  (3:38 PM)

Hard not to see the Jets as the AFC favs

Mark Sanchez (NY)

If the Mets can get one more star starter and a couple good bats, do you think they can go all the way? Thanks LZ in advance!

LZ Granderson
  (3:39 PM)

They don't need more bats. They don't need more stars. They need therapy. As a team, they're in some sort of mental funk and unless somebody in that clubhouse really steps up and leads them, they're going to be spinning their psychological wheels.

Mike (Chicago)

I often hear that the better talent in the minors is at the AA level and not the AAA level. Our of curiosity, why is that?

LZ Granderson
  (3:40 PM)

where do you hear that from?

Jason (Tampa)

what do you think of the football div 1 conference realignment? If it does get down to 4 or 5 mega conferences, higher chances of playoffs?

LZ Granderson
  (3:44 PM)

The thing that's holding the playoffs back is the perceived cut in revenue and definite cut in behind the scenes politics and powerbrokering.

Matthew (Brooks)

that would be cool if he was Mark Sanchez (jets qb)

LZ Granderson
  (3:44 PM)

Mark, is that you?

Sean Chenot (Jacksonville, Florida)

What is up with this expansion stuff in College Sports? I live in Jacksonville Florida Aka Duval, but I'm a die hard UK wildcat fan I bleed blue. However, I don't want another team like Texas or who ever in the SEC because they aren't in the "South" the teams in most confrences make 100% sense to me but there are some like Boise and maybe Notre Dame but I don't think really anyone else should move. Idk if that sounds crazy and I know it's all about $$$ but let's say Texas comes to the SEC, now Texas doesn't play the hundred small schools in the state of Texas meaning not as many games longhorns play in Texas = less attendence = less $$ idk again but Im only 18 but I think some of these guys trying to run the NCAA and change the face of college sports as we know it could severly hurt the only econmical feature in the US not really damaged by our ecomic downfall

LZ Granderson
  (3:50 PM)

First Sean, as long as Steve Jobs is making stuff we don't need but gotta have and Hollywood is making sequels, they'll be other revenue streams so don't worry. As for your question, if you look at the world of American sports period, a lot of the alignments make no geographical sense, for instance, the NBA's Memphis Grizz being in the Western Conference. How they end up there has a lot more to do with covert logistics than what appears to be obvious practicalities. So who ends up in the SEC may have more to do with something like current TV contracts than where the school is actually located.

AAA vs. AA (Talent)

This is frequently true, as much of the rosters at AAA are filled with guys no longer considered prospects... ie 33 year old career minor leaguers. Organizational depth. Whereas AA tends to have a larger collection of real prospects.

Mike (Ohio) [via mobile]

Any comment on the non-perfect perfect game?

LZ Granderson
  (3:51 PM)

Robbed

Mike (Mpls)

I just learned an interesing fact. Apparently Texas is not in the south. Hmmm.

LZ Granderson
  (3:51 PM)

Don't tell Texas

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

I am Just Curious Are You Related to Yankees CF Curtis Granderson?

LZ Granderson
  (3:51 PM)

Not that we know of.

Julie (Tulsa, OK)

If Nebraska and/or Missouri leaves the Big XII, what is the likelihood of moving Oklahoma (and maybe Oklahoma State) to the North division? This would help ensure that the best football teams have a better chance of meeting in the conference championship rather than only in the regular season.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

I was Just Curious Are You Related To Yankees CF Curtis Granderson?

LZ Granderson
  (3:55 PM)

Sorry Julie, the "better football teams" are in the SEC. I think the way the Big XII has played defense these past few seasons, it doesn't really matter who plays for the championship, it's going to be a high scoring game.

LZ Granderson
  (3:56 PM)

OK peeps, Curtis and I are not related. For starters I can hit lefties... at least in softball

Michael (Indianapolis) [via mobile]

If notre dame ever does go to a conference would that damage the prestige of notre dame?

LZ Granderson
  (3:58 PM)

Notre Dame's record and NFL talent over the past decade has damaged its prestige

Dave (LV) [via mobile]

So, Isaac Bruce has apprently been traded to the Rams so that he can retire as a Ram. Aren't those things kinda silly? Does it really matter?

LZ Granderson
  (4:00 PM)

Symbolism is a powerful thing. Sometimes such a trade is just another thank you for your services to the franchise, sometimes its an "we're sorry we traded you" or "I should have have never left", so no, I don't think they're silly. I'd like to see Favre traded to Green Bay in 2050 and retire a Packer.

Steve Siddall (New Braunfels, TX)

Great hockey game yesterday. Nice to see the game on at a decent time and on major network. Even better was seeing Bobby Hull and Stan Makita in the upper area overlooking the action. Who wins the series??

LZ Granderson
  (4:02 PM)

You have to think the Blackhawks will win Game 7 at home. And yes, it is great to see hockey back on a major network and getting the attention it deserves. Folks have been waiting a long time for Chicago to get back here and though it pains me as a Red Wings fan to see them win, it's good for hockey.

Mike (Ohio) [via mobile]

So, Paul Pierce apparently was caught on camera saying "We ain't coming back to LA." Shouldn't someone remind him that yesterday he appeared to be everywhere but LA?

LZ Granderson
  (4:09 PM)

There are a couple of ways to took at this--on the one hand he and KG have miserable games and yet the Celtics still won on the road. If I'm a Lakers fan, I'm pretty nervous about that. Especially when you consider Pau and Bynum had really strong games and they still lost.BUT--Ray Allen made history and well, you can't depend on that for three straight games either. Rondo's capable of getting triple dubs but if PP doesn't shine in Boston, they might not be coming back to LA because the Lakers will sweep them at home.

jake (illinois)

lz good afternoon and who do u take game 3 celtics or lakers and who u take for game 6 hawks or flyers

LZ Granderson
  (4:15 PM)

I gotta think PP and KG will feed off the crowd's energy and have much better games, so I'll take the C's in Game 3.And the Cup's going 7 for sure.

LZ Granderson
  (4:16 PM)

Thanks all for swinging by. And you can follow my game rants on Twitter @ locs_n_laughsLater
