Chat with Pat Yasinskas

Daniel (Lancaster)

There seems to be some talk about moving Beason to Davis's spot and replacing the vacant "mike" linebacker with Anderson or Connor....please tell me you disagree with this and that you like me expect Davis position to be filled in by the kid we traded for from Chicago whhose name I can't place at the moment :).

Rick (Charlotte,NC)

Pat, enjoy your articles very much and wish you were back in Charlotte. In regards to the Clayton article yesterday....is it really a bad thing for Clausen to wait in the wings and gain some experience? And why is everyone down on Matt Moore? I think he has what it takes.

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:49 PM)

Don't rule out the possibility of Jamar Williams playing Davis' spot. But also don't rule out possibility of Beason moving and Connor playing the middle. Panthers are trying to figure who their three best LBs are and how to get them on the field at the same time.

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:51 PM)

To Rick's question: Panthers would be delighted if Clausen doesn't play a down this year because that would mean Moore is playing great. But there are no guarantees with that right now.

Joe (Tampa)

Pat, last week you defended the Glaziers ownership of the Bucs. I don't understand that position given the radical difference in the way the team was operated from 96 to 2003 vs the milk the cash cow, pay nothing in salaries and put a terrible product on the field operations since the Man U. purchase. Winning the Super Bowl was great, a tremendous accomplishment given the mess this franchise was when they purchased it. Now they have run it into the ground and operate exactly the same way Culverhouse did. Given how cash straped they are the right thing to do is either sell the Bucs or sell Man U. They clearly cannot operate both and the commitment to winning is on the soccer pitch as they need to get a return on that massive leveraged investment. They deserve the empty stadium they'll be sitting in this season.

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:52 PM)

Not sure I defended the Glazers exactly. But I just think Tampa Bay fans need to stop putting all their frustrations on the easiest of targets. Ownership certainly deserves some blame, but there are other issues at work here.

freeman (pittsburgh)

hey pat, why do you think the bucs released mark bradley this week, i thought that he would be one of the bright spots on the offense this season.

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:53 PM)

Think they're very pleased with how rookies Mike Williams and Arrelious Benn are coming along.

Chris (Carolina)

I think all the Carolina Panther's fans should be very excited about the teams offense, despite having an unproven quarterback.Just as much as all the new players they have infused on offense, offensive coordinator,Jeff Davidson plays as big a role as any. He really has to expand his playbook this season to take advantage of all these new weapons. I want to know what your opinion is on Armanti Edwards' effect on the offense. I think he will perform well at wide receiver, and I think when he is used in the "wildcat" formations,he will be one of the few players who will actually throw the ball on alot of plays, instead of running it every time, causing alot of problems for opposing teams defenses. I think this guy is going to be a heck of a player. Finally something for all the Carolina fans to get excited about on offense. Thanks Pat.

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:55 PM)

Think this is a huge season for Davidson. He came in with a big reputation, but injuries and other issues have prevented him from ever making a big impact. I think he's got to loosen things up this year and getting Edwards involved as a slot guy would be a nice start.

Jay (Albany, GA)

Do you have any info on what the situation is with Peria Jerry's injury? Is the situation much worse than we thought?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:57 PM)

Falcons have been very quiet on this one, which has me a bit worried. Just have to wait to training camp to see.

nick (Charlotte)

I saw an NFL films clip on Steve Smith, entitled the passionate panther and was wondering your thoughts on how much he has matured over the years.

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:58 PM)

Steve Smith is a great football player. I'll leave it at that.

JohnnyB (Chalmette, La)

Hey Pat, Nice work on the blog. About your best coach in the division, why do you put Dungy's accomplishments in Tampa, in terms of turning the city and team around, so far ahead of what Jim Mora did in New Orleans. To me they did the exact same thing: kept a team who might have left in that city, turned them into winners, had great defenses which didn't have the offense to complement it, united the fanbase, etc... It seems to me that this was a big factor in you choosing Dungy, and I don't see why your evaluation of Mora, who did the same thing as Dungy, didn't seem as glowing as Dungy's.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:00 PM)

No doubt Mora did a lot for Saints and I think I had him No. 4 on the list. Just feel Dungy did more in Tampa. Team was on verge of moving, hadn't won in a generation. He came in and totally changed character of the team and won with class. Didn't win the Super Bowl, but set the table for Gruden.

collin (lakeland fl)

hey your column is good but wondering whether the BUcs are gonna release Clayton or if they are gonna just let it ride. A youth movement should make it so but who knows with the bucs?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:01 PM)

No guarantee he makes it out of training camp. Lot depends on what he does in camp and how the young receivers come along.

Eric S (Saint Petersburg)

How in the world can you have John Fox and Jim Mora Sr over Gruden in your rankings? Fox and Gruden both have won 3 Divisional Championships. Gruden won the Super Bowl, while Fox lost at his shot. All I have to say about Mora is that he won 0 playoff games. End of story.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:02 PM)

Your opinion. I've already stated mine and I stand by it.

Josh Davis (Denver NC)

Hey Pat, give me a prediction. Will D. Jarret be the number two WR start of the season?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:03 PM)

I'll go out on a limb and say no.

Jamie (New Orleans)

Hey Pat, doing an awesome job! Which Saints Linebacker has the best chance at replacing Scott Fijita on the outside?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:03 PM)

Jo-Lonn Dunbar or maybe Clint Ingram.

Ken (NY)

Best O-Line in the NFC south?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:04 PM)

Probably Carolina.

Josh Davis (Denver NC)

Hey Pat! Do you see the panthers keeping Tony Pike or putting him on the practice squad? He has a nice arm I hear.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:05 PM)

Pike was a draft pick, so I think he makes regular roster. Cantwell is more likely for practice squad.

Ian (WHO DAT NATION, LA)

USA got robbed just now. Shoulda won 3-2. Damn REFS. On a better note, what do you think of the Saints rings? You like?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:06 PM)

Yep, pics I've seen of Saints' rings are pretty spectacular.

JohnnyB (Chalmette, La)

Hey Pat, tell the ESPN guys the auto update isn't working, at least not for me.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:06 PM)

Will do. sorry about that.

Don (Death Valley)

Afternoon Pat, Why is it that the Bucs seem to Never get any press in the various networks like the NFL network or ESPN? I understand the market perpective but it would be nice to see some actual mini camp footage rather than a 2 minute shot of Coach Morris. I think the NFL affiliates need to be a little more even with coverage so that the lower market teams have a little more press time for there TRUE fans... Thanks again

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:08 PM)

Not to be rude, but just honest. Teams that win games are going to get a lot of attention. The Bucs haven't done a lot of winning lately.

Jamie (New Orleans)

Carolina might have the best RUN-BLOCKING O-line in the division, but there's no way they beat out the Saints when it comes to pass protection. Thoughts?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:09 PM)

Some very real truth in that, but I want to see what happens with Saints' situation at left tackle.

JohnnyB (Chalmette, La)

I guess I still don't get it, because the Saints had their first winning season under Mora. So, everything that Dungy brought to the Bucs, Mora brought to the Saints. I'm not disagreeing with you about Dungy, I just don't see that big a difference in each coaches contributions towards changing the football culture in each city.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:11 PM)

Short version -- Mora did a great job. But Saints always have had and always will have a die-hard following. In Tampa, nobod cared about Bucs before Dungy arrived. He made them the biggest thing in town and completely changed way the region views football.

MikeQ (Ireland,Cork)

Hey Pat, love the column, Do you think that either Sidbury or Bierman will become a stand out LE at trainign camp for the Falcons, or will it just be a rotation between the two for the season ?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:12 PM)

I think Biermann is the guy they really have high hopes for.

Gary (Charlotte)

Pat, tell Jamie it's a heck of a lot easier to pass block when you have Drew Brees at QB as apposed to Jake Delhomme.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:13 PM)

Good point.

nate (matthews, nc)

yo pat, if jarrett isn't number two wr than who will be?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:14 PM)

LaFell.

Mickey (New York)

Will you be in NY for Sept 12 for G-men vs. Panthers?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:15 PM)

Don't know yet. Won't start planning travel with my bosses for at least another month.

Andrew the WhoDat (Atlanta)

PAT. Help me on this...How is it the best coach in the NFC South if you considered coaches that coached BEFORE the NFC South? That alone makes the "award" a wrongly titled. NOT disagreeing with Dungy, just how you presented the whole thing.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:17 PM)

Come on, you might need to develop some new hobbies instead of nitpicking on issues that aren't issues. I was very clear in how I presented that -- it was open to any coach who ever coached a franchise that is now part of the NFC South. That's why guys like Jim Mora and John McKay were eligible.

JohnnyB (Chalmette, La)

Ask Gary in Charlotte, if its easier to run block when the RBs are Williams and Stewart as opposed to Bush and Thomas? If so, then what does that say about the Saints O-line who had a top 6 running game and a top 4 passing game? Just wondering.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:18 PM)

Another good point.

Josh Davis (Denver NC)

Pat, from what you have seen and heard, what will John Fox do after the season if offered a new contract? Turn it down or accept?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:20 PM)

Good question. Think he'll be keeping a close eye on how Coughlin and NY Giants are doing.

Andrew the WhoDat (Atlanta)

BUT that's not the best coach in the NFC South. Basic critical thought.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:20 PM)

Like I said, develop some hobbies. The point was made clear in all the stuff leading into it.

Jason (Birmingham, AL)

Enough about the coach rankings. We are beating a dead horse. How do you see the Donald Penn situation playing out in Tampa? There is no way that Dotson starts the season at LT.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:21 PM)

Not sure how or when, but I think it will get resolved. They cant have Dotson out there protecting Freeman's blind side.

Chip (NC)

Hi Pat- How do you see the Tampa RB situation playing out? Is Caddy the clear starter or is there still a chance for D Ward? Thanks!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:22 PM)

My guess is Jo-Lonn Dunbar.

Joel Hightower (Maui,Hawaii)

Off the subject but how about that blown offside call for the US game in the world cup! Do you think that was as bad as the Jim Joyce perfect game error? Both inexcusable in my book!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:23 PM)

Sorry, but you're asking the wrong guy about soccer. I don't follow it at all.

Josh Davis (Denver NC)

So do you believe that Fox will leave Carolina if the NY Giants enter the new head coaching market?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:24 PM)

Would think that would be a real possibility.

Eric (Atlanta)

Top three wr's in the nfc stout?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:25 PM)

1. Smith. 2. Colston. 3. White.

Andrew the WhoDat (Atlanta)

Wow, insulted for voicing a valid opinion/observation? Really didn't expect that from you. Not everyone on the internet is a basement dweller.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:27 PM)

Not meant to insult. Just saying it was made very clear that it was open to anyone who ever had coached a franchise now in the NFC South. To then, point out NFC South didn't come into existence until 2002 and make it sound like I wasn't aware of that, is nit-picking, in my eyes.

Jim (NOLA)

Pat love your work. What do you think about moving to the 18 game schedule? I know I am ready... The Saints offense would break all kinds of records with two more games.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:28 PM)

Think we're only a year or two away from that.

Terrel Owens (maybe Charlotte NC)

Pat, why would a team like carolina that is struggling for a number 2 WR not pick me up. Plus, I can be a mentor for Lafell and Edwards.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:29 PM)

Umm, talk to Jerry Richardson about that. And why do you think you'd be a good mentor?

JohnnyB (Chalmette, La)

Since the upcoming month or so is VERY slow for NFL news, what can we expect from the blog? I can't wait for the position rankings and team evaluations that will eventually come, but it seems like that's a long ways off. Do you have any teasers you can give us?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:31 PM)

Couple projects coming up I can hint at: Best team in the history of each franchise. And a guy from each franchise that sould be in Hall of Fame.

Matt (NJ)

How short is Moore's leash? If he plays poorly and the Panthers go 0-4 or 1-5, does Clausen get a look?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:31 PM)

Sounds about right.

Jim (NOLA)

How about doing a piece on the best player to ever play (in or with) an NFCS team?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:33 PM)

Already have done that. Derrick Brooks. Another year or two of Brees and that could change. But, for now, it's Brooks.

Loren (New Orleans, LA)

In response to "Terrel Owens""s question above. Let's forget the fact that John Fox is going with young talent. Throw that out of the window. Steve Smith + T.O.... are you kidding me? Talk about clashing personalities. Why not throw Chad Ochocinco in the mix and bring Joe Horn out of retirement while you're at it.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:34 PM)

Good points.

Nathan (NC)

Clayton did not expand on why he thought Edwards could be the biggest steal of the draft - do you have any inside info on this?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:35 PM)

Just that he's explosive and dynamic and could have an impact right away. Gotta hope Davidson uses him properly.

Jamie (New Orleans)

What about doing a piece on the best NFC South team ever, but everyone should know the answer to that one...'09 Saints, right?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:35 PM)

That will be part of the project on best teams ever for each franchise.

Richard (Ann Arbor)

Best team in each franchise's history shouldn't be hard. Each team has one Superbowl appearance; that sort of eliminates all others by default.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:38 PM)

Yep, my division is the easy one in that assignment.

Cristian (Kissimmee fl)

5 years prediction, who is really the best QB ? Freeman / Clausen / or Ryan? Put them in you're order

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:38 PM)

1. Ryan 2. Freeman. 3. Clausen.

Chip (NC)

Pat- PLZ HELP: What does this mean?:Chip (NC)Hi Pat- How do you see the Tampa RB situation playing out? Is Caddy the clear starter or is there still a chance for D Ward? Thanks!Pat Yasinskas (1:22 PM)My guess is Jo-Lonn Dunbar.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:39 PM)

Caddy is the starter.

William B. (Nassau, The Bahamas)

Pat, here's an idea. With the "slow" months for NFL news upon us. You take 4 weeks off, and each week one of the NFC South head coaches takes over the chat. Fans of each of the 4 teams would probably enjoy getting some inside perspective and their thoughts on the other teamsin the division. Come on man, you need some time off to get ready for 2010.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:43 PM)

Time off is coming soon for me. But don't think we'll be able to get the coaches to fill in. They're all taking time off, too.

Nathan (NC)

Wow, now we are predicting what is happening 5 years from now? I think that is a bit far. This year is a bit far...

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:44 PM)

True.

Brad (The Colonade Resturant Bayshore Blvd!)

Pat, your the only blogger I avidly follow! You say that the Bucs are seeing good progress from our young receivers, but do you think they are going to be enough to have a tru number one receiver?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:45 PM)

We'll find out. Benn and Williams have lots of potential. Colonade is a great restaurant. Haven't been there in a long time. Might have to end that streak.

Mike (Charlotte)

Pat, who would you say is the best defensive player in the NFC South regardless of position.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:46 PM)

Probably Jon Beason.

Chris (VA)

Pat, who do you see being the best #2 running back in ATL this year?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:48 PM)

Snelling.

Cristian (Kissimmee fl)

what? why is it too far?? Real Fans think about the past present and future.... and wondering ones perspective is not a bad thing... back me up PAT.....

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:49 PM)

Nothing wrong with that. Gives us something to talk about.

WcFaLcOnFaNwC (SaC-ToWn)

Hey Pat, has the falcons and their number one pick Sean Weatherspoon comming close on a contract deal?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:49 PM)

Don't think anything's real close. Probably going to be another few weeks before first-rounders really start signing.

Rigidy (Hartford)

If there was an 18 game regular season, do you see the league going to 2 BYE weeks per team?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:50 PM)

That's been discussed and sounds like it could be part of the plan.

Austin (Middleton)

You talk about Sean taking Stephen Nicolas' spot at Linebacker, but what about Mike Peterson? You look at his stats, he's not that good. Especially on the blitz.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:51 PM)

Not saying I agree, but it sounds like they're projecting Weatherspoon in Nicholas' spot.

Albert Haynesworth (Golden Corral (Washington, DC))

You think Raheem Morris wants me now?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:52 PM)

Not sure anybody wants you now.

JohnnyB (Chalmette, La)

Which rookie will have the biggest impact this year in the South?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:53 PM)

Gerald McCoy. Think he's going to be a force for Bucs.

Loren (New Orleans, LA)

So many players looking for bigger, longterm deals. And in case of people like Pierre Thomas, Darrelle Revis, or Chris Johnson, you can't really blame them. But how can they expect such a thing when they KNOW owners have no idea what the cap will be next year or year after? I really loathe the business end of the game.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:53 PM)

No argument here.

Jamie (New Orleans)

A good majority os "experts" are predicting the Saints to fall flat this year. Since we have the best QB in the league, genius Number 1 - Payton on offense and genius Number 2 - Greg Williams on defense, how likely is that really going to be?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:54 PM)

Not saying they're a lock to win Super Bowl again, but any team with Brees is going to be a contender.

Chris (VA)

Countless articles have talked endlessly about Harry Douglas being the key to Atlanta's pass offense. Is he really that good, and should we expect him to have a lot of rust for the first half of the season?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:56 PM)

He really is that good. They had huge plans for him last year before he got hurt. Wanted to use him in slot and mabe eventually take over for Jenkins. Think those plans remain in place.

William (California)

I would say McCoy just makes the Bucs Defense like 100% better then last year, also gotta add Price in there, Ruud and are Corners should be so happy right now!! and excited!! Cause i sure am!!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:57 PM)

Agreed.

Akonz (WI)

What about Harry's ACL. It usually takes two seasons for a person with an ACL injury to fully recover, doesn't it?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:59 PM)

If you're looking for a bright side on that, Harry went down right at the start of camp last year. So he's already got almost a full year in and all indications are he's ahead of schedule.

Cristian (Kissimmee fl)

GIVE US THE SKINNY.... BLACK OUT FOR THE BUCS... YES OR NO??

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:00 PM)

I think you'll see local tv blackouts, unless Bucs start real fast.

Akonz (WI)

sounds good. Call it a day?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:01 PM)

Yep, thanks for the cue. We're past the 2 p.m. cut-off time. Thanks to all for stopping by.
