Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (11:26 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to RAD -- Rafael After Dark! Just finished watching Andre Ward lay a beating on Allan Green for 12 rounds as he EASILY retained his title and advanced to the semifinals of the Super Six tournament. Outstanding performance. So check out Friday's notebook and blog as well as Saturday's blog and the updated schedule and let's get to it.

Ian (Pembroke Pines, FL)

Where's Ward going to rank on the P4P list after THIS performance?

Dan Rafael
  (11:27 PM)

He will certainly move up. It was a masterful performance.

Danny Boy (NY)

Why in the world didn't the ref stop them from holding so much? This was more of a wrestling match than a boxing match.

Dan Rafael
  (11:28 PM)

There was not much holding actually. There's a difference between holding and inside fighting. They were fighting on the inside, where Ward dominated.

Aaron (Hartford)

good excuse or not from Green on that p-poor performance ?

Dan Rafael
  (11:28 PM)

Typical. No shock at all. I knew if he lost he would make excuses. Even when he's won but not looked so good he has excuses.

Bradley Edwards (Richmond (VA))

More than a little BHOP in Ward. In Get off from distance, then get in close and not let you return fire. When in close, push you back, then position the arms in a way so that you can't throw, but you can. Masterful stuff.

Dan Rafael
  (11:29 PM)

Ward has shown in this fight and the Kessler fight that he can alter his style to fight a particular opponent and that is what he has done.

Charles (DFW)

Any way we can petition Showtime to remove the ridiculous Red Dot/Blue Dot punch graphic? Great for basketball, not boxing. Are you listening Ken Hershman?

Dan Rafael
  (11:30 PM)

Stupid graphic. So terrible that even Al Bernstein was tripping over what the hell to say when it was up. Utterly pointless. Nothing more than something that looks pretty and means absolutely nothing.

Doug (Tampa)

What are your thoughts from Tarver that he is moving up to Heavyweight? And on top of that he calls out Haye and the Klitchkos Bros?

Dan Rafael
  (11:31 PM)

No surprise, but Tarver will get smoked at heavyweight. But at least he'll get a decent payday.

Joe (Oracle arena)

Did someone forget to remind Allan green it was fight night? He didn't look like he wanted to fight...he just got bullied for 12 rounds

Dan Rafael
  (11:32 PM)

You're right. He did nothing effective the entire fight. Followed Ward around, got bullied around, didn't throw punches, didn't jab, just happy to be there it seemed to me. Got his ass whupped.

Carnell (Washington, DC)

Taylor should have stayed in the tourney as the fight would have been much more entertaining with him in it.

Dan Rafael
  (11:32 PM)

Well I don't agree with that.

Mark (LV V)

I wouldnt go as far and say that was a masterful performance Dan....he had a dead man in front of him..I dont think Green threw any punches in a few of those rounds

Dan Rafael
  (11:33 PM)

Part of the reason for that was because Ward was throwing back. It was a masterful performance. He gets credit for shutting Green down and making him look like a dead man.

J IN FLA (Merritt Island, FL)

Max Kellerman always talks about special fighters making you want to see them again. Does Ward do that for you? I want to like him but his fights are terrible to watch.

Dan Rafael
  (11:34 PM)

I don't love his style as far as watching it, but I really, really appreciate what he is able to do. And I don't think they're boring. He let his hands go and isn't afraid to stand in and mix it up when he has to. He has serious toughness as well as speed and skills.

Corey (westwick)

Got to give Ward his props he looked great and is without a doubt the man to beat i'm loving this super six but part of me wants to see Ward vs Bute now

Dan Rafael
  (11:34 PM)

Maybe after the tourney if they're both still standing we can see that fight.

Juan (PR)

Credit to Allan Green, he can sure take a beating. But please save the excuses. He simply could not get Ward off of him.

Dan Rafael
  (11:35 PM)

I could have done without the excuses. Just say the man was better than me tonight, he fought a great fight, I'll come back and be better next time. The excuses wear thin.

Ned (Hartford, CT)

Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, Children of all ages.....Welcome to Rafael After Dark! Here are the rules from our chatside scorer Popo the kittie "Thanks Ned! Okay, tonight's chat is governed by the rules of the Association of Freaks Commissions. The chat has a two drink minimum and Banishment is hungry as always. James Kirkland is still in jail, but there is news about him so he is an acceptable chat topic again. D$ does not hate Floyd Mayweather. If David Haye fights anyone other that Wlad or Vitaly next he is a chump. It has been verified that there is only one Ricky Hatton. Enjoy the chat."

Dan Rafael
  (11:36 PM)

Legendary.

Brett (San Diego)

Dan,I find it troubling when a fighter predicts a "blowing him out of the water" and then he gets blown out of the water. Is this a study in Psychology? The bully gets bullied then he wilts under the pressure. Were you suprised when green made the excuse that he overtrained?

Dan Rafael
  (11:36 PM)

It's a guy writing checks with his mouth that he can't cash or even come close.

anonymous (usa)

Who do you think wins the Rafael Marquez vs Juanma Lopez fight if it happens?

Dan Rafael
  (11:38 PM)

Love Juanman in that fight if it happens.

Julio (Chicago)

Hey dan now that the super middleweight division is packed with alot of talent , who can you see from the prospects to become a champion in the near future. i.e like edwin rodriguez and such .

Dan Rafael
  (11:40 PM)

Rodriguez has a chance. Marcus Johnson is another one who has a chance.

Russell (Vancouver)

Hey dan what do you think of David Lemiuex chances in the near future against some of the top middleweights.

Dan Rafael
  (11:40 PM)

Still a bit green and needs more experience, but I love what I have seen in his recent fights.

Justin (Virginia Beach)

They should kick green out of the tourny. Hell at least Taylor would have TRIED to win the fight. Green was trying to survive from round 1 on

Dan Rafael
  (11:42 PM)

Well they're not going to kick him out, nor should they. He's in for better or worse, but has no chance for the semifinals at this point I don't think (I have to do the math). But I agree - at least Taylor would have let it all hang out.

Bradley D. Edwards (Richmond, Virginia)

He overtrained. Memo to Green: you often fight tentative, pawing with the jab, and not throwing enough punches. Only tonight you did so and you had a world class fighter in front of you who exacerbated those weaknesses.

AJ (Guam)

Hey Dan who do you want to see Cotto fight next?

Dan Rafael
  (11:42 PM)

I'd like to see him and Berto.

Doug (Tampa)

Seriously, how do you think Pavlik would do at Super Middle with any of the top fellas?

Dan Rafael
  (11:43 PM)

He'd have done better with Ward than Green did.

steve (hartford)

danno, do you have attendence figures the crowd looked solid, i read sales were very weak but it looked like a good turn out.

Dan Rafael
  (11:43 PM)

It's called paper.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, Excellant commentary again from Antonio Tarver tonight. Wish he'd reconsider the heavyweight thing......a good, insightful, pull-no-punches commentator is a terrible thing to waste!

Dan Rafael
  (11:43 PM)

Tarver is very good on the mic. I agree.

Eric (North Hollywood)

Can't wait for the Ward/Dirrell fight? Who do you think might have the edge?

Dan Rafael
  (11:44 PM)

Very tough to call but I lean slightly to Ward. I think he has a little moe of the intangibles. Probably a technical fight. And they know each other so well from the amateurs and are friends as well.

Chop Chop (Las Vegas, NV)

Robinson DAN-o, were you privy to the fighters' purses for tonight's fight? I'm kinda curious...

Dan Rafael
  (11:46 PM)

Not sure exactly what Ward got but I'm pretty sure it was seven figures. I believe Green got $400,000.

robb (lawrence, ma)

any word from the love child if he's gonna fight again this year?

Dan Rafael
  (11:47 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. No news at all since the loss to Angulo.

Adam Hart (T.O.)

I actually think the Dirrell that showed up against Abraham could do pretty well against Ward. Not saying he will win, but he could give S.O.G. some problems.

Dan Rafael
  (11:47 PM)

Definitely agree.

Dan Rafael
  (11:50 PM)

Direct from the Bat Instant Message, these notes from a disgusted Gary Shaw -- he said, "Allan Green sucks." The he added, "Horrible fight." Then he said, "They should drop him." He then said, "He should have been ready and if he wasn't he should have postponed the fight. He is a puncher in an 18-foot ring. Where were the punches?"Gotta love Gary's bluntness.

Aaron (Hartford)

Dan- Green gets this apportunity of a lifetime to get into this tourny, gets to fight for back to back world titles, talks so much trash and yet fights with no passion or heart.... we all know hes got the talent and power...I dont get this guy...

Dan Rafael
  (11:51 PM)

I wish I had an answer.

Dan Rafael
  (11:51 PM)

Gary just said he loves the Fight Freaks.

Duff (Abington, MA)

Just once, I wish Gary Shaw would tell us what he really thinks.

Greg (Los Angeles)

I am a Green fan and thought that he was absolutely terrible tonight. I could have lived with an excuse tonight if he went out swinging, but I bet you he didn't throw more than 10 meaningful punches the whole fight. Hopefully he gets it together before the Kessler fight because getting another title shot after his performance tonight is like hitting the lottery.

Mikey (Levittown, NY)

Do you think there is any danger of fighters pulling out of the tournament going forward. Froch has threatened it, Green stinks and Ward may have beaten his semi-final and final opponents already.

Dan Rafael
  (11:53 PM)

I have no idea but even if people do we have at least gotten six fights out of this thing already. That's how look at it. If we get it to a legitimate conclusion it will be a bonus the way I see it.

Bryant (Pitt)

Dtm seems like its the Super 5 and the guy and the guy that replaced that guy

Dan Rafael
  (11:53 PM)

LOL!

stephend (benton arkansas)

danno... thanks for the rad!!!! ward looks to be the class of the division. dirrell/ward should be very entertaining. if froch doesn't get his way on location do you think there is any chance he won't fight abraham?

Dan Rafael
  (11:54 PM)

At the end of the day, Froch and Abraham will work out the venue situation. If Froch bails because of that shame on him. He has nowhere else to go anyway. He has no title and no big money fight -- unless he wants to fight Bute in Montreal!

Dan Rafael
  (11:55 PM)

I just asked Gary where the Ward-Dirrell fight will be on Sept. 25 and he said there is no site yet and they have no idea where it will be.

Dave (NJ)

Did Demetrius Andrade fight last night and did he win?

Dan Rafael
  (11:55 PM)

No, he didn't fight. There was some sort of issue with the medical or the medical paperwork for his opponent and the fight was canceled.

Homer (OH)

Abraham KO Froch, Ward-Dirrell draw, and Green KO Kessler. Calling it now.

Doug (Tampa)

Cotto should try and unify titles and face Spinks aka Mr. Inactive.

Dan Rafael
  (11:56 PM)

Why? Who wants to see that crap fight? Besides Spinks is fighting his mandatory supposedly next againt Bundrage.

Wilkwords (PA)

We need 13-14-15-back

Dan Rafael
  (11:56 PM)

I agree and if we did have em tonight Green would have gone out on his back.

Mike (Silver)

Dan, tell Gary if he loves the freaks he should let Perro out of the kennel and stop hiding him!

miguel (los angeles)

i hate allan green but i did do the math and sadly he is not mathematically eliminated he knock out kessler, and abraham beats froch or ward beats dirrell and he is sadly in the semis.

Dan Rafael
  (11:59 PM)

So there ya go.

Greg (Los Angeles)

Dan is Mayorga-Sturm really a possibility?

Dan Rafael
  (11:59 PM)

Don King has mentioned it but I highly doubt it will happen.

Chris M. (Toronto)

Any truth to Allan Green's favorite comic-book superhero being "The Flopper"?

Mikey (Levittown, NY)

The showtime announcers were talking as if September 25 is definately the date for Ward-Direll. Is that what you are hearing?

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 AM)

That is the date.

NYPD Blue (NYC)

Green is going to get knocked out by Kessler, not the opposite.

Homer (OH)

If Green didn't want to weigh in light, he should have asked Joan Guzman for training tips.

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 AM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Tony (Tampa)

Dan,Tell Gary Shaw the Freaks appreciate him not being scared of putting his fighters against top notch competition. We'll give him a pass on Angulo.

jack (dc)

Just want to make sure I have this right: Green can't fight when he has a shorter camp(a la Tarvis Simms) and uses that as an excuse, and he's a dead man (vs ward)when he gets the full camp that he wanted. I agree with shaw.

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 AM)

Apparently that is the case.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Dan, what top fighters today do you think would've also thrived in the 15 round days?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 AM)

Guys like Mayweather and Pacquiao would because they have incredible conditioning.

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 AM)

Breaking news Freaks.

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 AM)

Omar Nino just won a unanimous decision over Rodel Mayol to win the WBC junior flyweight title on Fox Sports en Espanol.

Bryant (Pitt)

Dan tell Shaw to put el Perro in with Cotto mexico vs Puerto Rico

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 AM)

He LOVES that fight and would like to make it. In fact, he read my blog from today in which I said I like the fight and he then emailed me and copied HBO's Ross Greenburg and Kery Davis and said he would sign it today.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Gary Shaw reminds me a little bit of the Nature Boy Ric Flair... Full head of white hair, and a hilarious temper

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 AM)

HILARIOUS!

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 AM)

Breaking news from the Bat Phone: Just got a call from Shelly Finkel. He told me his kid Adrien Broner, good young junior lightweight prospect with Golden Boy, just scored a seventh-round TKO win in his hometown (Cinci).

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 AM)

By the way I shared the Ric Flair comment with Gary and he responded that Ric Flair is one of his all-time favorites.

ztrain (oxford/ma)

do you see ward if he gets through the tourney unbeaten and maybe a couple of big fight wins being the p4p #1 i really believe his talent and just rugged fighting he showed tonight he has what it takes

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 AM)

He has that sort of potential without question.

Gerardo (AZ)

Hey Dan...random question: at what point do you consider DLH to have been at his peak? Just curious...

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 AM)

I think probably 1997-1999 when he first became welterweight champ up to the Trinidad fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 AM)

Ward, Dirrell, Abraham, Kessler, Froch, Green.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, With the references to the 15 round fights of yester-year could a fight ever be made for 15 rds again if both fighters wanted it? Whether it is the U.S. or abroard?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 AM)

No. I do not believe so. Commissions wouldn't allow it.

ron (santa monica)

Dano, should I go see young Frankie Gomez @ Fight Night Club this month?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 AM)

Those shows are a fun atmosphere so why not go?

miguel (los angeles)

keep the breaking news coming im hoping one of those is that Bute is replacing green.

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 AM)

Not going to happen.

Duff (Abington, MA)

Except I don't think Gary Shaw carries around a razor blade in his tights.

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 AM)

I'm not so sure about that. I think I may have seen one or two being hidden inside the sweat suit.

robb (lawrence, ma)

i'll admit i'm a cotto fan, and i'm skeptical of his chances against angulo. angulo seems like margarito plus more power (hopefully minus plaster) and i think that could cause serious problems for cotto

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 AM)

I'd love to see the fight though so we can find out.

Tony (Tampa)

We'll see how in tune Dibella is with the chat and Freaks if he confronts Shaw at their next roundtable discussion on Fight Camp 360 for calling his fighter, Green, a bum.

J IN FLA (Merritt Island, FL)

How do you think Tszyu / De la Hoya or Tszyu / Mosley would have turned out if they fought?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 AM)

At one point there was a lot of talk about a possible De La Hoya-Tszyu fight. I think at that time Oscar would have beaten Tszyu. I think he was a little bigger and quicker and would have stopped him. I think Mosley would have have outboxed him. Too fast. That said, I loved Tszyu and think he's one of the best ever at 140. I will gladly cast my HOF vote for him on the first ballot.

Greg (Los Angeles)

Any idea who promotes Miguel Acosta?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 AM)

Don King says he does but my understanding is that he breached their deal more than once and Acosta is with Top Rank.

Norton (Dothan, Al)

Grat Chat tonight Dan!!! I think Cotto vs Williams at 154 is a great matchup... What the chances?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 AM)

Zero.

Charles (DFW)

Green couldn't have beaten the Shower Door tonight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 AM)

Ouch. What about Povetkin's tree root?

Homer (OH)

Dan, how about a four man unofficial single elimination tourny with Lucian Bute vs Robert Steilgitz and Pavlik vs. Andrade? Hopefully the winner cud fight the super six winner

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 AM)

The Bute people made Steiglitz and offer to come to Canada a few months ago and it was rejected. You're idea is a good one but extremely unlikely to happen.

Mike (Silver)

Duff should be banned for making the freaks picture Shaw in tights!?!

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 AM)

That's a good point.

James (washington)

man just checked the schedule and happy to see the Beibut Shumenov vs. Vyacheslav Uzelkov is on espn should be good scrap

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 AM)

Interesting fight I agree.

Charles (DFW)

Could you see Andre Ward going to 175 to fight someone like Dawson or Pascal? I could see most of the Super 6 (except Abraham and Froch) moving up at some point.

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 AM)

I definitely see Ward at 175 before it's all said and done. He won his Olympic gold at light heavweight remember.

Bryant (Pitt)

R.I.P Manute Bol ex fighter and NBA player

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 AM)

Yeah, I saw that today. Surprsing and a bummer.

Tony (Tampa)

RAD has every promoter calling in with updates. Gotta love it. Now we're just waiting for Arum or Schaefer to break the news that Mayweather-Pacquaio is a done deal.

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 AM)

That call won't come tonight, but the promoters love the Freak chats. Arum and Schaefer have both participated. I already talked to Schaefer the other day and he wants to be a guest in the chat on July 30, the day before Marquez-Diaz II when I will be at the fight in Las Vegas.

Michael (Oakland)

If Andre Ward is SOG does that make Allan Green SOL?

Charles (DFW)

All Gary shaw needs now is to put Allan Green in a figure four.

Don (Miami)

You mean a Mayol fight actually went the distance without some kind of controversy?

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 AM)

Apparently. I have not watched the full fight yet as I was watching Showtime and then chatting, but I will check out the full fight in the morning.

big daddy south (tampa)

dan, do you think that Tarver would get smoked by Haye as well?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 AM)

Yes, like a fat Cuban cigar. Fast, young punchers beat old, slower guys who are 40-plus who haven't fought in a year.

Greg (Los Angeles)

Any chance of seeing Provodnikov and Ji hoon Kim back on FNF before the season ends?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 AM)

Not sure. I would hope so since Kim at least was so quick in his last fight. I think there's maybe an outside possibility Kim's fight for the vacant IBF belt maybe gets in before the end of the season but I am not sure.

Charles (DFW)

Saw Shumenov-Campillo 2. Alsmot made me wonder if Roy Jones has enough left to beat Shumenov. He showed me nothing except full power with every punch, and not very accurate at that.

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 AM)

I thought Shumenov got a gift in that fight.

C.M. (Canada)

Really, Besim? Gary Shaw reminds me way more of Paul Bearer.

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 AM)

THAT is hilarious.

Bryant (Pitt)

Haye seems better fit for WWE, lots of talking but no REAL action

Tony (Tampa)

What disappointed me about Green, besides the performance in the ring, is that he came off very likable outside of the ring. Calling John David Jackson "Rick James". Hilarious. Reading Thor comic books showing his geek side. Then he blows all that good will by sleep walking 12 rds. in the biggest fight of his life.

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 AM)

Hard to disagree. But guys have bad nights I guess.

Chris M. (Toronto)

I'd love to see Green and Froch fight. You can only imagine how sore that loser would be.

Bing (Philly)

Allan Green was flat out robbed tonight

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 AM)

Gale Van Hoy? Is that you? Or are you really the referee from the US-Slovenia World Cup game?

corey (westwick)

That Ward vs Dirrell could be a preview of the finals the reason why is because the european in fighters seem to be tailor made for these slick American boxers Ward and Dirrell might be to quick

Chris Carrasco (Roswell NM)

Hey Dan what do you think, the round table of promoters in the fight camp series is really entertaining. They talk more crap than the fighters in the tourney. Good stuff.

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 AM)

I love that part of the show.

Adam Hart (Toronto)

Here's a flaw in the Super Six: Allan Green gets rewarded for that pathetic performance with another title shot.

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 AM)

It's not a perfect situation. Had Froch beaten Kessler it would not be a title fight. So you just don't know.

Julio (Chicago)

Hey Dan do you believe that the marquez-diaz 2 undercard couldve gotten any better, i personally think this is on heck of an undercard

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 AM)

All things considered -- cost, available fighters, guys willing to fight each other, etc... -- I think he's very good undercard.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, I just want to give major props to Andre Ward for being such a class act by putting that Nick Charles statement on the back of his robe. A truly great thing to do for a great guy. Get well soon Nick!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 AM)

Could not agree more. When I saw that I thought it was really, really classy of him.

Charles (Philly)

Don't tell me YOU watched the USA-Slovenia game too, DTM! Soccer really is taking over....

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 AM)

Actually, here's what happened. I got a phone call and left my office and sat down on my couch and the TV was on. I flipped to ESPN thinking I would catch some SportsCenter while I was on the phone. Turned out to be the World Cup game. I had it on for literally like 90 seconds when the US scored the goal to tie the game. So I'm talking and I left the game on and a few mintues later I saw the goal the US was robbed of. I didn't watch it on purpose.

Dan (Brooklyn)

Ward just seems so calm and composed in the ring, plus he shows so many angles. He's going to be hard to beat. Especially don't see any of the up-right Euros doing it.

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 AM)

His poise is remarkable. It reminds me a little of the poise Mayweather always shows.

Gutterdandy (nyc)

Green reading Thor comics? Maybe he's getting ready for Kessler!

Odin (Asgard)

Thor never had an off night. Maybe when Loki turned him into a frog.

Rick (SpringTown)

DTM- Just got back from Oakland. There seemed to be a lot of people, and Ward didnt disapoint! The only fighter I can really see beating Ward is Dirrell. Hes just to fast and skilled for the other fighters. Plus he fights like a 10 year vet. He bullys the bullys. SOG!

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 AM)

Glad you had fun.

Banishment (Dan's House)

Was someone talking soccer in RAD?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 AM)

I should probably banish myself for talking soccer.

Gutterdandy (nyc)

If Allan Green got robbed it must have been in the parking lot after the fight.

James (washington)

one think about shaw is that he can sling his horsesh*t with the best of them (arum, schaefer, don king)

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 AM)

Damn right.

Roberto (Miami)

Any sliver of excitement from those 90 seconds of unplanned soccer?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 AM)

Yeah, the US scored the tying goal.

Rick (SpringTown)

DTM- Someone mentioned it earlie, but during the fight I was thinking about how Ward had some BHOP in him with the Roy Jones speed. The only thing he seems to lack is tha one punch power. I think Dirrell gives him a run but I see Ward roughing him up.

Chop Chop (Las Vegas, NV)

Another bad thing is that Green has stopped constantly looking down at his shoes during his fights. At least when he did that it was funny to watch.

Joe (Stamford, CT)

If you had to rate the Super Six on a scale of 1-10, what would you rate it so far (taking into account all factors including, but not limited to; the time between fights, the Fight Camp 360 shows, and, of course, the fights themselves)?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 AM)

8.5. I have really enjoyed it. If we can get an all-time classic type fight out of the next five bouts that are left that would be awesome.

Lance (Matteson,Il)

Any news on Mayweather Pacman Negotiations?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 AM)

I'd rather talk about soccer.

J IN FLA (Merritt Island, FL)

I want to hear Dibellas reaction. He's just as blunt as Shaw.

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 AM)

Haven't talked to Lou since the fight. Did speak to him before the fight and he knew that what happened was a possibility. He was realistic about Allan's chances tonight.

steve (hartford)

hypo question for you dan, if floyd fights and beats manny where do you rank him all time if he retired after the fight? top 50 top 25, 15?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 AM)

Not going to even discuss it. Let them make the fight first.

Doug (Tampa)

Who does Gary Shaw promote again in the tourney?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 AM)

Andre Dirrell.

Marcin (Toronto)

Dan, any chance Haye would fight Adamek? I think this would be a great fightl. I have Adamek on this one.

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 AM)

Maybe eventually. I'd love to see it, but not before Haye fights a Klitschko.

Homer (OH)

6 bouts are left.

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 AM)

You're right.

Jose Sulaiman (WBC)

I am pleased to announce that from now on all fights between our top 10 contenders will be considered interim title fights. The top-ranked interim titlist will be followed by the WBC interim chamption once-removed, and so on. Every fight a title fight, can you imagine, with a small sanctioning fee of course.

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 AM)

It just wouldn't be a chat without an appearance by the president for life.

AMC (Las Cruces)

DTM, what are your thoughts if Marquez gets past Diaz, with him and Khan? I think Marquez has a great chance with his counterpunching and power.

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 AM)

If Marquez beats Diaz in July I would not mind a Khan fight at all. Would be pretty big in Vegas. Marquez has his Mexican fans and I think we'd see a nice turnout of Brits coming for Khan. Not to the extent they traveled for Hatton, but definitely some.

Dave (NJ)

Showtime announced Ward-Dirrell for September 25, any chance Froch-Abraham moves one week and it becomes a split-site doubleheader?

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 AM)

No, Froch-Abraham is going to move to October.

Tom E (Jersey City, NJ)

I'd love to know where Ward got his license to mug folks from. He's great at head butting and elbowing. Good for him, very proud.

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 AM)

You obviously didn't watch tonight's fight because if you did you know there was no butting or elbowing of any consequence.

J IN FLA (Merritt Island, FL)

What are the chances of the cruiser tourney Saureland mentioned actually happening?

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 AM)

Who knows? Sauerland says they are going to try to do one and they promote several cruisers, so maybe we'll see something.

Tom E (Jersey City, NJ)

Froch Abraham where?

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 AM)

A ring.

Michael (Oakland)

Good news D, got back from the fight...didn't get shot

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 AM)

I'm so relieved.

Doug (Tampa)

I want what Don King is smokin and I too accept a fight with Vitali for 2.5 million!

J IN FLA (Merritt Island, FL)

During the Olympics, yes I watched all the boxing, I recall Teddy saying that Ward was undefeated in the open division as an amatuer. Do you know if that is true?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 AM)

I believe so. I don't think Ward has lost since he was like 14 or something.

AMC (Las Cruces)

Thanks, for the RAD tonight Dan, helping me get through my graveyard shift tonight. 7 more hours to go (MTN time)

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 AM)

Happy to help but I won't be here for seven more hours so read the transcript slowly.

Juan (PR)

Other than the obvious one, which matchup would you most like to see made before year end?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 AM)

Would of course love to see Alexander-Bradley. Would love to see Wladimir vs. Haye. Also interested in any combination of Gamboa vs. Lopez vs. Caballero. Cotto-Berto interests me as we have already discussed. I am looking forward to Pascal-Dawson, which is already made for August. Of course would like to see a Williams-Martinez rematch. Would still like to see a Donaire-Darchinyan rematch.

Rick (SpringTown)

DTM- One of the telling things in this fight to me was the 12th and final round. With Ward up big on the score cards he stalked Green down, going for a possible KO when he could have just cruised. While Green, after talking all that stuff, backing up the entire 12th rd instead of sacking up and going for it.

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 AM)

Good point. Ward wanted to close the show.

Jose Sulaiman (WBC)

Any chance I could be made an interim Freak? Would you believe a Silver Freak? How about super duper double secret probation Freak?

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 AM)

For a small fee, of course.

J IN FLA (Merritt Island, FL)

The freaks have got to give Sauerland some credit (Shaw too for for trying). At least they have learned that tourneys are a good thing. Tell that to Golden Boy next time you speak with them..

corey (westwick)

I could be wrong but is ward the best fighter to win a gold medal for America since Oscar

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 AM)

Well since Oscar the only Americans to win boxing gold are Ward and David Reid, so duh.

miguel (los angeles)

When i think of Khan vs Marquez what pops into my head is De la hoya vs Chavez, a young, fast hungry fighter with ALL the physical advantages against a still capable but ageing legend.

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 AM)

Not a bad analysis, but had Chavez not been cut even before the fight with Oscar in camp I believe he would have at least made it a little bit of a fight.

Braindamaged2too (the Asylum)

Mr. DTM,David Haye is a lot like Bigfoot. They both show up from time to time, they both try to scare people into believing they're real, and they both seem to leave a retched odor as they disappear!

steve (hartford)

what do you think of the ring making Dawson/Pascal for the world championship at LHW?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 AM)

Perfectly legit.

Joshua Clottey (Ghana)

Thank you Allan Green for a non-performance so atrocious that people might stop finally making fun of me.

Gerardo (AZ)

re: Mayol fight: "I will check out the full fight in the morning." You mean to tell me you're not watching the Paraguay - Slovakia game?!?!?

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 AM)

I can assure you I will not be watching the game. My Sunday morning will involve Nino-Mayol 2 and Meet the Press.

Aaron (Hartford)

Alot of Hartford in the chat tonight Dan.... hows that make you feel ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 AM)

You have a real classy mayor.

Kevin Johnson (Anywhere but a ring)

Great job Allan. A little less on the power punching and you will be gold!

Bryant (Pitt)

Seems Alexander and Kahn are the cream of the crop, is that the last of the potential match ups that will be actually made?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 AM)

Ummmm, you forgot Bradley.

Gerardo (AZ)

Hey Dan, thanks for the chat tonight! I gotta say, though, re: your blog...NO WAY Angulo Vs. Alvarez happens right now. And you know that.

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 AM)

I didn't say it would happen now. I said in a bit.

robb (lawrence, ma)

gotta ask dan...what do you prefer: excuses or overt praise for the opposition a la arreola post adamek?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 AM)

I can't stand excuses.

Chris M. (Toronto)

I think I'd rather be given an Interim Diamond Championship In Recess title belt than that ugly trophy. For real, Showtime couldn't have upped the ante on that little trinket?

Charles (Ogden, Utah)

Best 168 pounder right now? Ward or Bute? I still think it's hard to discount Lucian...

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 AM)

I give the edge to Ward right now. I think he's faster and the more complete fighter.

Bryant (Pitt)

No actually I didnt, Bradley yes is a tough fighter but hasnt beat anyone as SKILLEd as those 2 by far, they have much more talent, Bradley is a very good tough fighter but I dont think his boxing skills really compare

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 AM)

Dude Lamont Peterson, Junior Witter and Kendall Holt are all skillful. You don't know what the hell you are talking about.

Dave (NJ)

Do you know the ratings for the Top Rank live shows? Will the series continue next year?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 AM)

I don't know the exact ratings but I belive it is coming back next year.

Jason (Riverisde,CA)

Hey Dan love the lashing you gave Don King for another one of his insane demands. Seeing how you tear into all these guys, has there ever been something you wrote that ESPN wouldn't let be posted for whatever reason?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 AM)

Yes.

Patrick (Pittsburgh)

Hey Dan, what fight are you next looking forward to most. It seems like there is a lull in the schedule and not much on the horizon. Can you tell us any possibilities for big fights (other than Pacquiao vs. Mayweather)?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 AM)

Honestly, I like the little bit of a lull. It's nice to be home for several weeks in a row. And I'll gear back up for a nice stint in late July and August and then head into a busy fall.

Charles (DFW)

So what did the doctors remove 85% of from Green this time? Oh yeah, his b***s.

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 AM)

OUCH.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, Simply for the sake of argument: let's say David Haye actually ends up fighting one of the K bros. And Haye ends up knocking them out. What would you do?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 AM)

Give the man all the credit in the world.

AMC (Las Cruces)

DTM, would ESPN be able to stop you if you posted what they didn't like on Twitter? That alone would for sure have me following you on Twitter and I don't have an account!

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 AM)

ESPN has very specific rules about what it's people can post on social networking sites as it pertains to the beats they cover, so yes, that would be a problem.

J IN FLA (Merritt Island, FL)

Hey freaks. Was transferring VHS fights to DVD this weekend and watched Ibeabuchi vs Tua for the first time in years. Watch that again to see how good heavyweight fights can be. I know it's been awhile for us fans to see a good heavyweight scrap.

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 AM)

Helluva fight.

JJD (Seattle)

There is hyperbole, there is GROSS hyperbole, and then there is Gus Johnson comparing Andre Ward to a "young Sugar Ray Leonard."

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 AM)

Yes, as much as I like Ward, that comment made me a little ill. But I THINK what Gus meant was they were both gold medal winners, both have a tunnel focus and tenacity.

Sam (NJ)

No FSN here, who won Mayol-Nino?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 AM)

Nino won a unanimous decision.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Thoughts on Tarver moving up to heavyweight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 AM)

Enjoy eating but he'll get smacked around.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, I gotta say it amazes me that there are still people out there who simply won't give Timothy Bradley his due! In each of his last five fights there were folks. both fans and sportswriters etc.,who doubted his abilities. And each and every time Bradley has proven them wrong. I say give the man his due!

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 AM)

Well I know you're not talking about me because I have him ranked No. 1 at 140 and in the top 10 p4p rankings.

Tom E (Jersey City, NJ)

Dude - I don't always agree with you (obviously), but you're awesome. Thank you very much for entertaining fight freaks this late on a Saturday night.

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 AM)

You are welcome and if you always agreed with me what fun would that be?

Juan (PR)

Why is everyone running away from Caballero? High risk/low reward?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 AM)

You got it.

NYPD Blue (Brooklyn)

David Haye and the English soccer team: both no-shows.

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 AM)

Good stuff.

JJD (Seattle)

Well, no need to revise that top-10 list of greatest fights at 168, I guess.

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 AM)

LOL, exactly.

Charles (Philly)

How many rounds do you think it took Ken Hershman to start yelling at his assistants to get him Sakio Bika's phone number?

Kevin (Denver)

Who would you like in a Vanes Martirosyan - Paul Williams clash?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 AM)

At this point, Williams would wipe him out. I don't think Vanes is ready for a fight like that at all, although I do admire his stones for asking to fight a guy like Williams. When I interviewed Vanes for a story I wrote before the Joe Greene fight he even said something like, "I know this is crazy, but I want to fight Paul Williams." Ahhh, youthful exuberance. Gotta love it.

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 AM)

OK, Freaks great RAD chat tonight. Thank you all for participating. Hope you had fun. Enjoy the rest of your weekend and I'll talk to you again back at our normal time at noon ET on Friday. Peace.
