Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (11:57 AM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to our weekly Freak chat. New notebook is up, schedule is updated and there are new news stories and blogs from this week, as well as another blog coming today, so keep an eye out. Not much going on this weekend besides Latin Fury 15 ppv with Chavez-Duddy. No FNF tonight either, but still plenty to discuss, so let's get to it.

Vegas (Horn)

After 7 years, Chavez Jr. is taking up a step up fight? By 2017, he should be ready to face a legit contender.

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

Why so soon?

Julio (Tucson, AZ)

Hey Dan, excellent notebook as usual....Do you think Berto is ready to take on someone like Sugar Shane or would it be better for him to take on Mike Jones first the Mosley?? Also do you think Cotto is also in the mix to face Berto??

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

Berto is absolutely ready to fight Mosley. If not now when? I think Cotto-Berto COULD happen, but a few things would have to break the right way for it to happen any time soon.

Keith H (Seattle)

OK kids, we tried last week but didn't quite make it. The chat is your final exam. Do your homework ahead of time. That means before you check in you need to read the notebook, all the blogs (especially Dan's), the schedule and don't ask any questions about Mike Tyson having a chance against the 1960s Ali unless you want to feed Banishment. C'mon! It's not that difficult unless you make it so. References to Quinznos toasted sandwiches and the Love Child get you bonus points as long as you throw a couple Sprites Dan's way. "Let's get it on!"

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.

Steve (NYC)

Is Tarver serious about a return? Any news regarding that?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

From what he said last week on Showtime, he is. Nothing more specific than that.

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Freaks -- the new blog is posted. Enjoy. http://espn.go.com/sports/boxing/blog/_/name/rafael_dan/id/5327455/wbc-silver-title-joke

Freaks -- the new blog is posted. Enjoy. http://espn.go.com/sports/boxing/blog/_/name/rafael_dan/id/5327455/wbc-silver-title-joke

Rob (Texas)

Dan, how is the weather in San Antonio? How is the atmosphere there for the big fight ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

I have no idea. I am at home in Virginia.

Steve (Sac,Ca)

Dano, any chance Ward/Dirrell will be in Oakland?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

That fight is TBA. Just asked Gary Shaw, Dirrell's promoter, about it and he said no site yet and he and Dan Goossen, Ward's promoter, have not spoken about it yet.

Koichi (NYC)

Great Notebook but even better blog, WBC is really disgusting. I'd rather root for the Red Sox.

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

I would too.

Jerrell (huntsville,al): [via mobile]

What's your prediction on the duddy-chavez fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

I think Chavez will come away with a win. But it could go either way. If it goes 12 rounds, nobody in San Antonio is doing Duddy any favors. The Alamodome has been kind to the Chavez family. That's where Chavez Sr. got a draw against Whitaker in one of the worst decisions in boxing history.

Steve (NYC)

Would Cotto fight Duddy next? Easy fight, which Cotto deserves and it sells out MSG.

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

Who cares? I don't see that happening.

Vegas (Horn)

When Green sucks so bad, that Ward gets SRL comparrisons, you know you're witnessing a classic behind the woodshed ass whipping.

Mark (NYC)

If Omar Henry and David Lemieux met sometime down the road (they're in the same weight neighborhood), do you think that has the potential to be the most violent one round fight of all time?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

LOL. Good call.

Manuel (San Jose CA)

Hey Dan, who do you think is next for sergio martinez?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

I think there is a possibility that it could be Martinez-Mosley at 155 pounds. I know DiBella has made that offer to Golden Boy and from Lou tells me the offer was very much a split in Shane's favor. I think it's an interesting fight. It's a great opportunity for Mosley to become middleweight champion and he will earn the lion's share of the money and it's a great name for Martinez to fight, and he's wanted to fight big names. I think it's very interesting.

Mike (Simpsonville SC)

Super 6 has really turned out to be a great tournament. A lot can happen by the time it's over but i would like to see the winner face Bute, and then the winner of that move up to fight Bad Chad Dawson. I think Ward vs Dawson could be an incredible matchup

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Those seem like the two obvious big fights for the winner, but like you said, a lot can happen between now and the final.

Mark (Orlando)

Who will the commentators be on the Saturday night PPV?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

I took your question right to Lee "Harv" Samuels, the PR king at Top Rank. His answer just arrived into the Bat Email -- the card will be handled by the Top Rank Live crew, Rich Marotta, Barry Tompkins and Raul Marquez.

Julio (Tucson, AZ)

Dan....Kudos to ESPN for putting on the Urango-Diaz along David Lemieux card for the season finale....That's going to be a great night!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

Card is not done yet but that is what they are working on, and I agree -- excellent show if it comes off.

Steve (Sac,Ca)

Dano, If not Oakland for Ward/Dirrell, where else can they fight and make good money, The Dirrell/Abrham fight in Michigan was practically empty

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

I will leave that to Goossen and Shaw. They will come up with something.

JP (Bronx, NY)

Hey Dan-o do you know if Miguel Cotto and his uncle have made amends since his father's passing??

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

My understanding is that no, they have not.

Daniel (SF)

In your blog the other day, you mentioned that the two most obvious names on the upcoming IBHOF ballots will be Mike Tyson and Kostya Tszyu. Did you forget Chavez?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

I guess so.

Will D (Cumberland, RI)

Dan, I've read a lot about Wards "masterful" performance and that might be so, but that was a boring fight. I dont mind seeing guys fight inside, but every single round Ward tried pushing Green into the ropes so he could could pitter patter him. Yes, I agree that Green looked terrible, but Wards decision to fight on the inside for 90% of the fight made it boring to me. I'm predicting Dirrell to beat Ward.

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

It was boring because Green stunk to high heaven and did nothing at all. Ward took it right to him and beat him up on the inside.

chuzen (st. louis)

dan, how would you rate the necessity to buy the ppv this weekend, from 1-10 (with 10 being an absolute must for freaks)

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

It's a solid enough card and I think it'll be entertaining. Is it a must-see show? No. Does it have potential to produce some nice fights? Definitely. I think Sanchez-Villa on the undercard *could* be a war.

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

Dan, what's up with Kelly Pavlik? Is there anything lined up for him yet?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

Not yet. He's enjoying his summer I would imagine and in a month or two they'll look to a fall fight.

Steve (Sac,Ca)

Dano, Got a chance to meet DiBella at Ward/Green. He is a class guy who told me that unless Green lands something he has no chance against Ward

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Lou is one of the most realistic promoters I know when it comes to handicapping his fighter's chance to win.

Ali (Tampa)

Isn't Sergio selling himself too short, by offering to take short money vs. Mosley? Mosley has never been a big draw on his own, is a faded fighter, and coming off a bad loss. Plus, Sergio is the champ coming down to 155.

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Not at all. Sergio is a realist. He knows he is not a star in the US. He wants to be one. The only way to do that is to fight big names. And taking short money against Mosley would still be his biggest payday ever I would imagine.

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

Dan, you don't think that fight between Mosley and Mora will happen do you? I'd think Shane would rather fight someone who matters.

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

I hope not. I have no interest in that fight.

Lennox Lewis (Doing a Floyd Mayweather impersonation)

Like I said before, absolutely.

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

Hilarious.

Drake (Minnesota)

I know you think Ward put on some sort of Herculean effort against Allan Green, but to me it was more of a non effort from Green -- maybe one of the most woefully lethargic performances in the last ten years.

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

Part of the reason Green stunk so bad was because Ward didn't allow him to do anything. That is part of the equation and Ward gets some credit for that.

Ali MacDonald (Glasgow,Scotland)

Kelly Pavlik's Super Middleweight debut is a no brainer to me, Librado Andrade !!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

Good fight.

Ian (Wales)

Andre Ward is the only fighter to win both Super Six bouts. BUT, Andre Ward is the ONLY fighter to fight both his bouts at home. You American writers keep leaving out that last part.

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

Ward could have fought in Green's living room and would not have made a damn bit of difference. You're an idiot.

Joe (Bethpage, NY)

Dan Considering that you are not in on the negotiations where both parties agreed to remain silent, and your job is to report what you know, can you at least explain why you choose to answer "No comment" when asked about Pac-Mayweather negotiations?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Horn (Vegas)

Who do you think would win between Green and Clottey in a stare down? Pillow fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Very tough call.

maniroc (Cicero, IL )

Hey Dan, has Freddie Roach mentioned anything about Chavez Jr's father role in this camp?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

He hasn't had one. I did ask Julio Jr. about his dad and he said, as I wrote today, that his father was very happy that Freddie is working with him because Freddie wouldn't waste time on a kid with no talent.

Steve (Sac,Ca)

Dano, since predicting Green would beat Ward I've decided to lay off the drugs

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Good call.

Joe (Texas)

Your thoughts on the undercard for Saturday's fight. I expect Martinez/Elizondo to be the best fight on the card.

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

It could be a good fight. Good local grudge match between two San Antonio guys. We'll see what, if anything Barrera has left as well in another undercard fight. Arum also said we would see highlights at least of Jose Benavidez, one of Top Rank's top prospects who is trained by Freddie.

Bryant (Pitt)

Seems to me if I lost my title I'd be trying to get back to the top not "enjoy my summer" What a joke Pavlik

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Lay off. Dude had a brutally tough fight two months ago and was BADLY cut. And there is no date for him right now anyway. So what is wrong with healing, resting and letting your team see what is available? Jeeeez. I expect more from a typically smart Freak.

R (Bay Area)

Ward was on TV last night, saying the Dirrell fight would be in Vegas.

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

That is one of the possibilities. But if they do it there, they will need the right venue. You can't put that fight in a huge arena.

stephend (benton, arkansas)

great notebook dan... with the 3 potential fights listed for Mosley, which one would you like to see the most?? I'm torn between berto or martinez.

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

I'd be happy with Berto or Martinez.

Carl (Cleveland)

Dan, are you part of Andre Ward's PR team? Just wondering...

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

No, I just call 'em like I see 'em and if you don't like I don't care.

Dan (Chicago)

Have you listened to Izzy Vazquez on Telefutura? He says "claro que si" (translates to "of course") about 20 times a minute! I think we have a new broadcast hero!

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

I hadn't noticed.

Derek (edmonton, alberta)

The sport is in big trouble when the so called hard core fans can't appreciate a good infighting display. People need to understand Ward's performance against Green was like any Klitschko fight: the opponent was rendered helpless by superior technique and implementation. It was a classy preformance.

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

At last, an intelligent Freak.

Ali MacDonald (Glasgow,Scotland)

Would it be worth my time getting tickets for Rick Burns vs Rocky Martinez ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

I actually like that matchup.

bj (new haven)

Dan, any updates on where Froch-Abraham is going tkae place Are they still in the process of figuring it out? And say they hold it in Germany, do you really believe Froch would drop out?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

They are still arguing over it. But I have a hard time believing Froch would seriously back out. If he does, he will be the all-time Winky Wright School of Boxing Business champion.

Gutterdandy (nyc)

Dan, nice remarks on the Super Six in the blog -- the longer the tournament goes, the more glaring the absence of Lucien Bute becomes.

Joe (Bethpage, NY)

Ok, then if after they reach an agreement or don't, will you explain to your loyal readers why you have refused to report what you know about the Pac-Mayweather negotiations? If it's because you don't want to risk writing something that lessens the chance of the fight happenin - just say that

Joe (Bethpage, NY)

Any news on who P. Williams may be fighting next?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

Not yet.

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

Dan, I propse a tournament in the featherweight division. Chris John, Juanma, Gamboa, Cabellero, Rafael Marquez and Elio Rojas. All action fights no matter who's in the ring.

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

It's a good lineup, but don't count on a tournament. But some of the matches should certainly happen. Lopez-Marquez is already on the books if Lopez beats Concepcion July 10.

Bill (Williamsport, VA)

I find your continued defense of Andre Ward's preferential treatment in the Super Six stupefying. Wait and see, the European promoters are gonna raise holy hell when all is said and done.

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

Blah, blah, blah.

Mark (NYC)

Speaking of Lemieux and Omar Henry, 154 to 160 has a preposterous amount of terrific young talent: Erislandy Lara, Danny Jacobs, Alfredo Angulo, Shawn Porter, Fernando Guerrero, Vanes Martirosyan, Matt Korobov, K. Omar Henry, Lemieux, James Kirkland, Demetrius "the Best" Andrade, and maybe even Mike Jones if he moves up in weight. Not like this is a revelation, but, damn, we could have a lot of good fights in a couple of years.

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

You are right on brother.

Neal (Joliet, IL)

Someplace like Planet Hollywood or The Palms for Ward-Dirrell?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

Exactly. Where they can sell out a couple of thousand seats rather than a giant arena they will never sellout or come close.

chuzen (st. louis)

the ward haters are out on the prowl today

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

It's amazing how much hate a class act and terrific fighter willing to fight anyone gets.

Matt (Washington, DC)

It's a sad statement about the heavyweight division when the totally dominant #1 in the world is setting up a mandatory to fight the third or fourth best heavyweight (and second or third best that's not in his family) and people aren't excited. I know Klitschko-Haye would be more interesting, but isn't Klitschko-Povetkin one of the top four or five heavyweight fights that can be made?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

Yeah, but it doesn't excite too many people, at least here. It's a reasonable match obviously. Povetkin is highly regarded but does anyone give him a real chance to win? No. He may be considered the fourth best heavyweight in the world or so, but that is not because he's so great. It's because the division sucks so bad.

Ali MacDonald (Glasgow,Scotland)

Thanks Dan, I think I'll take my dad to see it.

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

Have fun and don't come back to me and complain if the fight is no good.

Joe (San Francisco, CA)

How long until Golden Boy actually makes a competitive matchup for their Fox Sports or Telefutura shows? Its like the weekly prospect showcase blowout...

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

I can't disagree. Telefutura has been a massive disappointment so far.

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

Chuzen, I'm not surprised the hate Ward is getting. Look at the hate Cotto, Pacquiao, and many other classy guys who will fight anyone anytime get. All boxing fans can't be as intelligent as some of us are.

Shawn (Tempe)

Just to stir the pot, Ward will be a top 3 P4P within next 2-3 years. He's that good.

Rob (Williston Park, NY)

Although I love Berto-Bradley, I hope Bradley doesn't permanently move to 147 before we get a chance to see him fight Alexander, Khan and/or Maidana

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

I agree with that. I would like to see Bradley fight at least one or two of the big fights at 140 before he moves up for good.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, Nice to see Lennox putting David Haye in his place! How soon do you expect Haye to decide who he is refusing to fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

LOL.

Randy (Milwaukee)

Holy crap there are a ton of moronic Super 6 viewers. This is just like in the Mayweather - Mosley fight when after Floyd totally dominated the dopes tried saying that it was because Mosley's shot. How about Ward and Mayweather put on a boxing clinic and took their opponents out of the fight completely?? Thanks for dealing with this garbage, Dan.

Noel (Glasgow)

"It's amazing how much hate a class act and terrific fighter willing to fight anyone gets." As long as the fight's in Oakland.

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

Better than Glasgow.

Paul B (NY, NY)

DTM- please thank your better half for me for the pronunciation help with Poonsawat's last name. Funny, I never realized that Mrs DTM (at work) was actually your wife! How often does she follow the chats? THAT is spousal support.

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

I don't need to tell her, she's probably reading the chat!

eddie (minneapolis)

how surprised are you that jesse brinkley worked his way into your divisional rankings?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

Very but after examing all of the possibilities for the 10-hole at super middleweight I felt he was most deserving.

Mrs. DTM (at work)

I read every week, when I get a break at work. Hi, Freaks!

jon (cameron, nc)

Is Roy Jones officially retired?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

No, he's not.

Randy (Milwaukee)

I'm beginning to develop a strong dislike for European boxing fans from this chat alone.

Shawn (Tempe)

Once again, it's interesting to see how many so called freaks don't understand the economics of boxing.

Rick (Marina, Ca)

I really hop Juanma fights Marquez cause I think Marquez derails Juanma plans for Gamboa fight. Marquez will knockout Lopez.

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

I hope the fight comes off. I love the match and think it will be a great atmosphere in Vegas for that fight.

stephend (benton, arkansas)

hi mrs. DTM (at work) glad you told us freaks hi....

Derek (edmonton, alberta)

from your blog:"Hey, it's hard times for the organizations," Arum said. "In this economy, they're scratching for a living."...please thank Arum for giving us hope that some of these alphabet orgs may go bankrupt.

Sherman (Clayton, MO)

DTM, What happened with Edwin Rodriguez last night? I thought he was scheduled to fight Holguin. I'm seeing a TKO 5 against Ibahiem. Any word on how La Bomba looked? I'm excited for him to move up.

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Holguin pulled out a day or two before and Rodriguez drilled the replacement. He's starting to develop a nice following in his hometown too. He drew more for this fight than he did in his last one. DiBella is smart to go to Worcester for his fights but not every time. He is building something there.

Horus (Los Angeles)

Why is Sotto taking so long to fight Peterson..??? I see the fear in him

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

He's ducking him and Top Rank is helping him and doing no favors to Peterson, who is also a Top Rank fighter.

James (Athens, GA)

It's pretty clear the Ward/Green fight would have been completely different in Oklahoma. The crowd and hometown judging were clearly in play. In Oklahoma, Green would probably have been much better and maybe even have won a round.

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Exactly.

Carl (Virginia)

Dan, how much interest do you have in seeing a Vitali - Valuev fight? I find it at least intriguing.

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Compared to what else is available, I'm cool with it.

Rick (Marina, Ca)

Im debating whether or not to get the Chavez ppv, it would be the first Chavez fight I order, Im very interested cause it's a step up and it's his first fight with Roach. It's probably going to be a gametime decision for me.

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

You'll sit there with the itchy trigger finger and order it. I can feel it.

Charle (Phoenix)

Dan, I really enjoy your info as you are the source for what's going on in the sweet science!! Do you agree with me that Dawson vs Pascal has a chance to be 1 of the better fights of the year as both guys are extremely skiiled, fast both with their hands & feet,

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

I am very much looking forward to Pascal-Dawson. Even type of matchup between the two best guys at 175. Will have an electric crowd in Montreal. Just love it.

Scott (Bloomington,MN)

Hey Dan and Mrs DTM, Any news on an opponent for Caballero yet? I can't wait to see him fight again.

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

Nothing yet, but DiBella told me he has talked to Top Rank about matching him at 130 with Jorge Solis, who has an interim belt. He said Caballero is willing to fight anyone at 126 or 130.

nick (ky)

Dan, do you think DiBella and HBO would be making a poor business decision letting Berto fight Mike Jones? After all they have done to build Berto up, doesn't putting him in there with a guy no one's heard of that could very well beat him(In my opinion, I think Jones beats Berto today) sound like something HBO would never do? They have to protect their investment.

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

It's merely one fight that is a possibility. HBO isn't protecting Berto anymore. They want him in real fights.

Chris (Nashville)

I would LOVE a Mosley / Martinez fight. But I think it is a bad matchup for Mosley. Sergio won't stand in front of him like Margacheato did.

Luis (Philadelphia)

Mr. Rafael, Please tell me that there is no truth to the ugly rumor that there will be a Trinidad vs DLH 2 my ear drums are bleeding.

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

I wrote something in my blog that was a JOKE and people got all serious about it. People please!

Vito (New York)

Dan, any chance at all the Showtime replaces Green with another Super Middleweight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

No. Why would they? He is in the tournament. The tournament format calls for him to get a Group Stage 3 fight. And he isn't pulling out. So he will fight. Period.

nick (nyc)

Dan - are the Klitschko bros future HOFrs at this point?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Most likely, yes.

Rick (Marina, Ca)

Im wondering Dan, do you use a blackberry or a I phone?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Blackberry Bat Phone.

Randy (Milwaukee)

I want to see what all these Ward detractors have to say when Green holds his own against Kessler.

Chris (Vancouver BC)

D Nice, can't wait to see Alexander back in action, although i think he blows Kotelnik out of the water. Who do you like in the undercard scrap? Don't know enough of Cloud to have an opinion.

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

I think Devon toys with Kotelnik, but I want to see him actually do it. Cloud-Johnson is a good fight. Cloud is pretty untested. Johnson will make anyone work to beat him and you never know if Glen can pull out one more big win.

jt$ (DC)

While I appreciate your opinions on boxing, listening to you talk about soccer is like listening to MMA fans talk about boxing. I know bashing soccer is popular among sportswriters in the US but gimme a break, if you don't like it, leave it alone instead of looking ignorant.

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

Soccer sucks.

frank (Springfield, FL)

although oscar-tito II was a joke, could you not see Oscar coming back for one fight that he thinks he could win - like Chavez Jr., similar to the way Leonard came back for Camacho

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

I have said since the day he retired that I believed Oscar would fight again and I still believe it.

Derek (edmonton, alberta)

Did you hear about Roy Jones' desperate lawsuit against Danny Green? I can't decide if it's comical or pathetic.

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

That's pretty old news. It is sad and comical at the same time.

The Good Doctor Filth (Cleveland)

Do I lose freak status because my girlfriend's birthday happens to fall on Latin Fury 15? Gives me a good reason not to purchase it. I mean, I'll still check the results same time, but at least I won't have to fork over money to watch JCC and Duddy.

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

You can stay a Freak. Latin Fury 15 does not rise to the level of a Freakhood revocation for not watching. So have fun.

John (Jersey)

Sad and comical... like George Michael in a clown costume...

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Yeah... whatever.

Rick (Marina, Ca)

Any intrest about the USA vs Ghana match

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

I did a few years ago when it was Judah fighting Clottey.

bkdon (Brooklyn)

I think Soto deserves fight where he can earn a decent payday and at least fight a somewhat notable name. Petereson wouldn't really give him a chance to do either.

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

Then give up the title. Peterson is the No. 1 contender. He should have gotten the fight against Soto for the vacant title but Top Rank and the WBC screwed him and went with Diaz and didn't even give Peterson step aside money. It's a joke.

NYPD Blue (Brooklyn)

Dan, I for one appreciate you resisting the politically correct notion that everyone must like soccer because the World Cup is on right now.

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

It's cool. I hate soccer whether the World Cup is on or not.

chuzen (st. louis)

random question: are you more impressed with pac man moving all the way up to welterweight, or rjj winning a heavyweight belt

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

I would have to say Pacquiao because he has beaten better guys moving up than Roy did in a single heavyweight title bout against Ruiz, who was realistically about a top 5 heavyweight at the time. Pacquiao was a massive underdog against Oscar and Cotto was one of the very best in the division when they met.

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

Dan, isn't there still a chance Allan Green can advance with a KO, if the other fights go in the right direction?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

Yes, with the right outcomes Green can make the semis.

George (Fontana, CA)

We are throwing my brother a bday luau party this saturday, but I couldnt resist, I ordered the Latin Fury 15 card and im actually excited to see the fights

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

Enjoy.

John (Laurence Harbor)

How do you like this: Angulo vs. Saul Alvarez winner gets Cotto.

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

Bring it on please.

Tom (Kingston Ontario)

Watching the Duddy vs Chavez fight is like watching an ugly stripper at a strip joint. It isn't your first choice but as a "fan" you suck it up and endure.

jcs (winnipeg, canada)

As a long time Mosley fan, a potential fight with Sergio really makes me concerned. Shane has a history of moving up to fight bigger guys, and although he should be commended for it, I have a feeling Martinez might retire him. a fight with Berto, I would be happy with.

Shawn (Tempe)

If you could have front row seats to the final KISS show, but had to sit through a live soccer match(including those vuvezelas), would you do it?

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

I'd be annoyed, but I would do it.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, To me soccer is the John Ruiz of professional sports!!!

George (Fontana, CA)

lol, to Tom (Kingston Ontario) comment

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Cracked me up also.

Chris (Nashville)

Don't tell my boss, but I have mastered Alt Tab. Keep chatting.

Rob ( Williston Park)

it's one thing for Peterson to agree to step aside, but if that didn't happen, why didn't Peterson or his manager make an issue of being #1 and not getting a shot at the vacant title. Does Peterson have a manager?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Yes, he does. The reason was because they were promised a summer fight against the Soto-Diaz winner. And that didn't happen, so they are understandably upset.

Dustin (Wichita, KS)

Can you explain to me how Zbik is the WBC interim titlist, but Sulaiman wanted Martinez to drop that belt so Chavez and Duddy could fight for the vacant title? I thought the interim titlist became the full champion if the belt is vacated. I'm guessing this is just usual WBC nonsense though.

Kris Krepps (GR)

Sweeeeeeeeeet, Thanks Chris Nashville

Manuel (San Jose)

Next major fight for Victor Ortiz?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

I asked Richard Schaefer about him yesterday. Nothing specific at this point. He will likely be back in the fall on an HBO card or PPV undercard.

andrew (MIAMI)

wuts up with omar chavez. Weren't people saying he was better than jr chavez?

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

Some said that. It's not true. He makes Julio Jr. look like Ray Robinson.

John (Jersey)

Danno,You should get Max to sit in with you on one of these, man... My life has been empty since his show on 1050 got canned...

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

No offense to my man Max, but if your life has been empty since his show got canned, you have no life, obviously.

John (Jersey)

Could you shed some light on payment for fighters... let's take a card like the Calderon card a few weeks ago... small show... how much has Calderon made before? How much would the opponents make... etc

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

I believe Calderon made $100,000. His opponent I believe in the 30,000 range.

Briks (Philly)

All this Ward hate is crazy. Obviously Allan Green wasn't the BEST opponent out there, but look at what Ward did to Kessler too. Absolutely dominated him. I don't see a flaw in Ward's game. He can fight inside or out, box or punch, he can take a punch, and he has the B-Hop type toughness. A complete fighter.

Craig (Williamsburg, VA)

Dan, quick -- name the last GREAT heavyweight fight you saw.

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

Probably Lewis-Klitschko.

Shawn (Tempe)

Serious question, will FIFA award a Silver World Cup to the 3rd place finisher?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Dustin (Wichita, KS)

Not Lyakhovich vs. Brewster DTM?

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

Excellent fight, but lesser to me than Lewis-Klitschko because Liakhovich and Brewster were not at the same level as the other guys. But it's a great fight too.

Raul (whittier, CA)

Thanks for the chat Dano! What kind of laptop do you have?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

Courtesy of ESPN, I just got a new custom-built Dell. It's sweet.

FightFan (Orlando)

I HATE weeks with no FNF! :(

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

Me too, but it will prepare you for the end of the season, which is in late August and the months with no FNF to follow. :(

Matt (Washington, DC)

Dawson-Pascal is an "even type of matchup"? You must think very highly of Pascal. Isn't Dawson the undefeated, top five pound for pound guy who gave Adamek his only loss and has beaten Glen Johnson and Antonio Tarver twice each?

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

Yeah, he is and Pascal is a guy with a lot of talent, a former Olympian, whose only loss was a war with Froch and who beat Diaconu with one shoulder who will be fighting at home.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Dan, any chance of kim-vazquez on ESPN or will it just be Mexican TV? Im offically of the kim bandwagon!

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

It will not be on ESPN, which is a big disappointment for me since Kim has been fighting on ESPN regularly. It will be on TV in Mexico. Artie Pelullo, Kim's promoter, would have loved to put it on FNF but ESPN won't give up Mexican TV rights, so that is a deal breaker.

John (Jersey)

See David Haye RunRun, David! Run, Run away...Like a little girl...(My David Haye Haiku...)

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

Award-winning stuff.

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

Don't you love haiku about boxing? Ok, who has more?

Shawn (Tempe)

General note, Top Rank will be streaming live weigh-ins today, 1:30CST.

Joshua Clottey (Ghana)

I don't know what everybody's talking about I thought Allen Green fought a great fight against Ward.

John (Phoenix)

Dan, any news on who Segura is going to fight in July?

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

His fight has been moved to Aug. 7 -- read the notebook!! -- but he has no opponent yet.

Bryant (Pitt)

Adamek/Arreola wasn't bad but not great

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

Good fight. Not close to great.

Chris (Vancouver BC)

Is it just me, or has there not been a lot to choose from for FOY so far in 2010?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

There hasn't been. It's been a pretty weak first half of the year overall.

robb (lawrence, ma)

hey dan, is there a reason FNF has seasons? you talk about it like a typical tv show, and I wonder why it doesn't just run year round (but perhaps with a bit less frequency).

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

It used to run year round, but with all the obligations ESPN has to college sports it got bounced in the fall a few years ago.

Craig D. (Philly)

....make's Julio Jr look like Ray Robinson...Just spit some of my lunch on my desk with that gem!

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

Make sure you clean it up.

isaac (dc)

i think Cotto Vs Williams will be a great fight at MSG. what do you think>?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

That fight isn't happening nor do I expect it to ever happen.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Dan, my favorite gary show quote ever - "Alan Green Sucks"!

Brian (Minneapolis)

I have a question DTM. Technically are the Klitschko's ducking one another?

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

Technically, I guess you have a point.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Haiku, Suliman is a dictator, Badly corrupt, Who wants to pay the next belt fee.

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

Legendary. WBC haiku rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Dan, not exactly worldbeaters, but do you remember derrick jefferson vs. maurice harris on HBO yrs ago? great back a forth action and after the knockout, larry merchant professed his love for derrick jefferson.

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

Yes, I do. Incredible fight. I remember it very well. I was at a wedding for one of my best friends that night and we got back to the hotel room just in time for the fight. I believe I sat there still in my suit and watched that fight. Epic battle.

Justin (Sactown, CA)

DTM, is the fights purse "public information" or something your privy to as a boxing insider?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

It's public as it is filed with a the athletic commission where the fight is held and those commissions are public agencies. Some commissions are more cooperative about giving out the info when asked, but if one doesn't you can still get it if you want to go through the hassle of filing a freedom of information act request.

Juan (PR)

From now on, we should refer to any boxer avoiding another fighter as "Pulling a Haye." He should be forever branded in shame for his recent behavior.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Soccer Sucks!

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

Yeah, we've covered that topic.

Pete (Brooklyn)

That WBC Haiku wasn't a Haiku. A Haiku is 5-7-5. President for LifeInterim Titles For All!More Sanctioning FeesTHAT'S a Haiku.

Lou (Vegas Baby!!)

Why's everyone blaming Dan as if he promotes Andre Ward?? If it was that big of a deal, the promoters themselves should've raised more of a fuss. Plus the way Ward fought BOTH fights NEITHER men had a chance...it's not like he was robbed....he dominated...

Charles (DFW)

After some time to reflect, I have come to appreciate Ward's win over Green a lot more, but I think he will have a much tougher time doing that to Dirrell. Dirrell will keep it on the outside, and he knows how to move and spin out of those situations, and I think he's also got more pop in his punches than Ward.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, I want to give you your due props on your "Super Five" blog. I agree with everything you threw back at Allan Green for his pitiful performance. Out of curiousity and in need of a good laugh has Green come up with any more excuses for his loss since the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Not that I am aware of. The fight speaks for itself. All Allan can do is shut up and get ready as best as he can to fight Kessler and leave it all in the ring that night, win or lose.

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

So Dan, which is the most pathetic division right now? I'm torn between Cruiser and junior light. What do you think?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Junior lightweight is way worse. At least cruiser has some interesting guys like Cunningham, Huck and a few others.

Will D (Cumberland, RI)

Dan, are you ever tempted to call out a fighter for ducking some in person during an interview? I feel like its talked about on here or in blogs, but its taboo to ask a fighter straight up "Hey, why'd you duck this guy"?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

I have done it many times. I do it professionally and respectfully and let the fighter answer.

Manuel (San Jose CA)

Fantasy Matchup: Prime Diego Corrales vs Prime Alexis Arguello at Lightweight who takes it?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Helluva fight but Arguello would have stiffened Corrales.

Justin (Sactown, CA)

DTM, just so you know still never miss a chat...

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Neither do I.

Greg (Los Angeles)

Dan do you think that Zab gets a big fight before the end of the year?

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

It's possible.

David (Cape Canaveral)

Dan, interesting that Lennox commented on Hayes "street cred" any chance it will spur Davey to at least reply to the Klit offer?

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

Who knows? Haye is in hiding I think.

Jose A. (San Juan, PR)

DTM, you coming to the island for the JuanMa/Concepcion fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

No sir. My next fight is July 31 in Las Vegas for Marquez-Diaz 2.

Julian (Cedar Falls, IA)

Hey Dan, any word on how Pacman's congressional seat is going?

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

Ummmm, he won the election awhile ago and will be sworn in next week. Glad you keep up.

Juan (Los Angeles)

Hey, Dan I'm planning a trip to Vegas, is the Wynn a nice hotel to stay in?

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

Very sweet hotel. I have stayed there a few times.

Billy (Pittsburgh)

If nothing else, the Klitschkos were able to finally figure out how to shut David Haye up.

Joe (Bethpage, NY)

Another example of how much of a joke WBC is - Silver title is supposed to replace interim title, but Middleweight already has Martinez, with Zbik as interim; so Chavez-Duddy winner will be their 3rd middleweight champ

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

You are right. Just goes to show the WBC is a joke, as I have said a million times.

Ali MacDonald (Glasgow,Scotland)

Hi Dan, If you bump into Richard Schaeffer soon please tell him we want to see Amir Khan fight before December. It's ridiculous that Khan's being shelved till then.

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

It's not Schaefer's call! That's Khan.

Louis (New York)

Dan,Whats a better tradition than going out for mexican food, buying 2 six packs with your best friend, and calling dan rafael before every Super Six fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

Relax sport.

Frank (Springfield, FL)

Why did Pacquiao request to keep his Ring 140 lb. championship, as it seems that even if Mayweather doesn't happen, he's staying at 147, right?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

I have no idea. It is clear Manny is never fighting at 140 again and he should no longer be Ring champion. It's a disgrace.

Pete (NYC)

haiku: red blood flows, no end / a ringside levee breaking / Brumback is cutman

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

OMG! Freakin' brilliance.

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

I LOVE BOXING HAIKU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JL (San Diego, CA)

My response to Lennox Lewis saying that "there's a real chance Haye well lose street cred if he doesn't fight one of the Klitschkos?" - Definitely.

Jason (Atlanta)

Are you the new GM on RAW?

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

No, unfortunately.

Shawn (Tempe)

Is Top Rank planning on streaming any of the non-televised bouts Saturday? Would love to see Benavidez.

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

Yes, his fight and Omar Henry's fight will be streamed live on Top Rank's Web site.

Matt (Boston)

Hey Dan,Curious of your thoughts on Shelly Finkel's decision to retire from Boxing?

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

He's not outright retirning as his new company will be involved with some boxing promotion, but like he told me for the story I wrote -- he had a good opportunity with this gig and managing was not fun for him anymore. I can't blame him for making a change if that is how he feels.

Gibbs (Dallas, TX)

Who in the world is interested in Mora-Mosley? Would HBO actually pay for that garbage?

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

For the record, it would not be an HBO fight.

Chris (Vancouver BC)

No. Sad.

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hank (Long Beach, CA)

I don't see it on the schedule - what's the deal with Gamboa v. Salido

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

It's off. Maybe will come back in September, but right now it's off.

Dan (CA)

Have you heard anything about which fighters from Finkel are going where?

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

Not specifically, but he co-managed several fighters and he told me those fighters would now be managed by his partner in the contracts. For example, Luis De Cubas Jr. is his partner on Erislandy Lara's contract, so De Cubas would become the sole manager.

Juan Manuel Marquez (Mexico)

haiku: I drink my own pee/it helps me in my training/except against Floyd

Kevin (Fall River)

So the picture of JC Chavez Jr in the notebook this morning proves he and Sheamus are separated at birth!

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

Dan, do you also find the notion that you have to "take away the title from the champion", totally absurd? I've hard Tarver say it regulary and I've heard Kellerman say also. Shouldn't it start from even and two guys just fighting?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

It is absurd. You score rounds one by one. Now if you maybe give the champion the benefit of the doubt in a very close round that is one thing, but "taking the title" is nonsense. You need to win 7 rounds, any seven, or score some knockdowns and stay on your feet.

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

The Mike Tyson Haiku -Love to bite the ear/Take me to Bolivian/I'll eat your children

Justin (Sactown, CA)

LOL... ahhh these haiku's are killing me...

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

Me too. They are hilarious.

Rich (Stamford CT)

You call them both out, yet hide from both Klitschkos, silly Mister Haye.

Christian Farrell (Hoboken, NJ)

JD (DC)

Haiku: The freak fails to read /The notebook and blog were up / Banishment Beckons

Frank ('Frisco)

The saying "taking the title" to me has always been a referenence to a challenger's attitude in a title fight - ie. "don't leave it in the judge's hands".

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

I agree with that.

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

OK, Freaks, thanks for chatting today. Hope you all enjoy the weekend and a little Latin Fury 15 action if that's your thing. Check out the new notebook and blogs and the updated schedule and I'll talk you next week. Peace.
