Okay everyone-Let's get this party started
Do you think the Saints view Charles Brown as their long term answer at left tackle (since they traded the other Brown, one time Pro Bowler Jamaal), or are they satisfied with Bushrod? I kind of thought Charles was a little underrated by the NFL scouts when he came out of USC.
Yes, I would say that they think Brown is that long term answer and while he wasn't great, they obviously have a stop gap guy there in place with Bushrod. I would like to see Brown get stronger, so it might be a year until he takes that spot over, but I do think it will be his. Was shocked he fell that low, but I guess there were some injury concerns. I still haven't heard what Washington gave up for J Brown.
Matt, do you feel the Vikings could do a significantly better job in forcing turnovers on defense, and converting those turnovers into touchdowns? It seemed to me this was an area that was lacking in 2009. Do you agree?
The EJ Henderson injury probably had something to do with that, but I blame the safeties first and foremost. Those guys just didn't make enough big plays-esp when you consider that the pass rush that Minny has at their disposal. However, sometimes forcing turnovers is a somewhat random thing. How many times did an opponent fumble and get it back? I would bet that things change for the better going forward.
Hello Matt, there are rumors that Vincent Jackson could be traded and the Chargers could slap the franchise tag on McNeil, are these good moves? what say you?
We must recognize that SD is a contender, so my question is what do they get for V-Jax? This is a stud entering his prime. Would have to say that they don't get fair market value for him at this point. But, this is also a team capable of becoming more ground oriented and Floyd could step up a bit. Still, look at this roster-there is less star power than in recent memory. Trading V Jax would make it even more true.
Matt, not from just a fantasy perspective, but if Vincent Jackson does hold out into the season, what kind of value does Malcolm Floyd bring to the Chargers and would Rivers just key on Gates that much more? Thanks.
Surely Gates would see more targets and I do think the run % would increase. I like Floyd and I think the arrow is going up on him, but I also have my doubts if he can be a true #1. Seemed to "Almost" make a lot of big plays last year. Can he take another step forward? Probably. Still, then I would expect the Chargers' next first round pick to probably be a WR. Could they get a WR of some consequence back for V-Jax?
But-obviously Floyd's FF value would sky rocket and I do believe that a QB like Rivers can make his targets better. Rivers is to that point now and Norv can coach up O.
M-Dub. The Saints get the pick that the Eagles don't get from the McNabb trade. 4th or 5th rounder depending on how McNabb/team does. If Brown does well they will get another pick as well.
Thanks-seems light to me. This is a good time to be in the buying market for veterans.
Whats good Matt? Jahvid Best will he be more of a Reggie Bush type of or Chris Johnson?
More of an MJD. Probably not as powerful as MJD, but that kind of guy. Break away RB who can also lower his head and inflict a blow. Good wiggle and low center of gravity. I love Best. Could be the OROY. Potential great one.
Rank the best o lines the league NY Giants Carolina Tennessee NY Jets Philadelphia?
Of that group, I like the Jets, Panthers and Titans more than the others you mentioned. I think Balt is in that discussion now. NOrls is right at the top. Could see a drop off from the Jets this year-but they did play at a very high level last season.
I am a Saints fan. That seems really LOW to me. They could have gotten more or even Haynesworth in the deal if they wanted.
The second that I heard that Brown was heading to Wash, I assumed it was for Big Al.
You have mentioned before that you consider Willie Colon one of the better RT in the league. Can I ask why? His run blocking seems fine, but he seems to take a lot of penalties and looks slow footed against speed rushers.
I don't really agree with you. I see consistent improvement. Also, you look at the other 31 starting RTs in the league, it isn't a particularly outstanding group and in a way "heavy footed" sort of comes with the job description. I think his body type is somewhat deceiving. Colon is a wide body-almost built like a guard. Doesn't appear as light on his feet in protection as I think he really is. Improving as well. Not a great player though.
How will the raiders finish next season
Out of the playoffs...but with signs of improvement. Maybe 6 or 7 wins. Really have my doubts about that OL as a whole. But overall, this was a very good off season for them.
You have to give a shout out to the U.S.A. soccer team.
Apparently I do! This chat room is dead. Is there a game going on right now or something? I should probably know this!
What's your take on Kevin Ellison should the Chargers have kept him or is Stuckey the answer?
I like Stuckey coming out and apparently they have seen enough of him in OTAs to allow themselves to get rid of Ellison, who doesn't have Stuckey's range and obviously has off the field issues.
How many years should we give Carroll up here before we can start judging him?
Can always judge him quickly, but of course you have to realize that he is taking on a very big project and they won't become a force over night. Thus far, I judge him well. Like what he has done with that team's roster overall.
I also think that Seattle lucked out a bit with how the draft fell for them-but they did nice work.
I am the very best right tackle in the league yet you have never once mentioned my name in this chat how can this be?
I actually think we brought you up last week! I recognize you. Not sure you are #1, but certainly in the conversation. Brutal position to chose though. I like V Carey and Otah too.
Great job with Football Today. My question is I'm a huge 49ers fan & I see the secondary as the only real weakness for the team. Do you think they can make a playoff run
Thanks-on the NFC West blog, read my Weakness article on SFran. I think it went up yesterday. I said CB is their biggest weakness, but overall, I really praised this team and said their secondary (and specifically CB) isn't nearly as big of a huge weakness as what they had in the past. Also, SF's pass rush is going to be better. A Brooks might turn into a spectacular OLB in the 3-4.
With the additions of Shanahan, J. Brown, T. Williams, and D. McNabb would you say the Skins could be ready to make a deep run?
No. I still put them 4th in that division. I hate the RBs. Hate the pass catchers. Think McNabb is slightly overrated. Don't like the change to a 3-4 all that much. Improved from a year ago, but still 4th in a very tough division.
No love for the Fins OL?
Overlooked them. Yes, like Miami's OL an awful lot as well. Right near the top.
Matt, how do you see the Giants receiving corp playing out this year? Smith-possession, Nicks-Red Zone...and do the Giants have enough in the backfield to have any resemblance of a run game?
I really like this O this year. In fact, the OL is my biggest worry. Very high on Bradshaw this year. Not a believer in Jacobs at all, but he could still pound out some tough yards. Also think A Brown could really make a name for himself. Nicks is a stud in the making. Will be a true #1 and Smith is a heck of a
I agree that it will take a while for the Seahawks to become a force in the league, but Carrol's body of work as an NFL coach was actually pretty good when you look at it. How good can they be this year in a potentially weak division?
Prob still 3rd behind SF and Zona. Where does the pass rush come from? I also don't see a lot of depth on D in general. Want to see what they have in Whitehurst too. Average WRs & OL at best.
Tell me the Steelers secondary will be an improvement over last year? Is Polamalu really the difference maker that elevates the play of the CBs?
Come on man-I have an article (Scouts Eye) up right now on the Steelers' CBs. Check it out. In fact, I think the CBs will be improved-43 sure helps-but enough so that I have predicted that PGH has the best D in the NFL.
Matt, what do you think about Jon Beason possibly playing WLB after the Davis injury?
He is certainly capable. But he is also the leader of that D and should be the one making the calls and adjustments. Will he do that from WLB? He can, but not as easy. Davis' loss is huge though-esp when considering how awful Carolina is at DT.
Why do you like Nicks more then me? I am the number one reciever he is # 3 at best. if you look at the numbers from last year Crabtree & I were better than Nicks Maclin and Darius Heyward Bum
I didn't say that I do like Nicks better than you...but I do. I also think Britt is underrated, but he just isn't as dynamic as Nicks. Nicks is a big play machine. Of that crew, I would rank them: Crabtree, Nicks, Maclin, Britt and DHB a distant 5th. I like the top four though. Nicks is a stud.
Please tell Carolina fans that Steve Smith will be back for the start of the regular season and they don't want, or need, T.O.
TO doesn't make much sense on what I see as a rebuilding team. I can't say when SS will be back, but I can't see it being an ongoing thing. His loss during camp and the preseason will really hurt though-esp Moore and Clausen.
Not expecting much from the Panthers this year, although I really liked Smith to have a big year-still can I suppose.
Whats your prediction for order of finish in the AFC North? I see Balt, Pitt, Cincinnati and Cleveland in that order. 2 or 3 teams from the division in the playoffs?
Agreed. Not cut and dry though, except for Cleveland in the cellar. Those top three teams all can be contenders.
Matt, please tell Kenny the real reason why you like Nicks more than him...QB, that is all I have to say. Eli is head and shoulders above VY.
That is true, but I also like Nicks better as a player.
What the heck ever happened to Brett Ratliff? When he was in NY, he was supposed to have a strong arm, and did well in the pre-season games. Have you watched him much?
Have seen him and I like him. It has been a while, but I have brought him up on this chat from time to time. He is a guy that I am excited to see in preseason, but unfortunately the writing is prob on the wall for him with McCoy in town. Will they keep 4 QBs? Could be a guy who lands on a good team and shows up again in a year. Gutsy. Tough. Good arm. I want him to get a chance.
How can a Matt Williamson chat be dead!...look forward to it every Wed....how good can the Niners OL be with Solari coaching up these rookies?
The chat is picking up Mike! Can be quite good. Maybe in that 10-12 range this year overall. But OLinemen take some time. But now, there is depth and competition. Plus, good supporting cast of skill guys and I expect A Smith to take a step forward.
Does Shonne Greene get over 1400 yards and 14 TD's like TJ did last year?
I have my doubts. He doesn't catch the ball-but that isn't what you asked. He certainly has some impressive running skills, but wow does he take a lot of punishment and I don't see him being a consistent threat on the perimeter. Not sure he holds up. I will take the UNDER
Could the art of scouting be summed up as going with what you see and not what other people say?
In a way. Honestly, I love to hear/read every opinion on a player/team that I possibly can find. Otherwise, I think you short change yourself. Don't have to agree, but there are so many smart people on this planet, surely we can all learn from one anothers point of view. But yes, in the end, you have to believe in what you see for yourself on tape/live. But again, accumulating all the data/info as possible seems very logical to me.
Any chance a team that didn't make the playoffs this past year wins the Superbowl this year, ala New Orleans? Best chance has to be Pitt, maybe Giants?
I like those two and will pick them both for the post season. Will pick SF to win their division, but as of right now, I can't see them making noise in the NFC. Maybe Tenn? Many will say Houston, but I am not on board.
I know we keep talking about the Chargers window to win, but how many more chances do you think they will have?
I see that window slowly closing, but again, you can't underestimate how nice it is for them to be in that division! Rivers is a super star-and that will always keep you competitive. I like the Mathews pick up and if they can get V Jax there and happy, their O can rival anyone's. That D is pretty well, blah.
What's on the stereo today?
Just have my play list on random. Counting Crows on right now. It is quite the play list though-about 2800 of my favorite tunes, but didn't narrow it down today. What I get is what I get.
Hey Matt. Did you see the soccer game? What type of an impact can Jason Williams and Sean Lee make as the Nickel LB for the Cowboys? Thanks
I didn't see the game. In fact didn't know it was going on until my chat started. Does that make me a jag? It might. Love Lee. It might not be this year, but he is going to be a real play maker. Every down guy. Good range. Tough. Smart. Strong tackler. Grew up about two mins from where I sit right now. Williams also has a lot of ability, but I am higher on Lee-who could be a nickel LB as early as this season I suppose. In the meantime, they both should be exceptional ST players.
Chat might be dead because everyone was watching USA World Cup. As soon as the game ended, we all had to go on lunch. Not a lot getting done in the business world today.
It all adds up now. It might help if I ever saw what was going on in the world outside of football.
What are your thoughts on Cullen Jenkins practicing at OLB for the Pack?
Really high on this player. Really can do it all on the DL. Really liked him a few years ago when they were running a 4-3 as a DE opposite Kampman and as a DT on throwing downs. I see OLB as a weakness though opposite Mathews and Jenkins really is a rare athlete. Obviously should be great against the run at OLB, but can he turn and drop? Have my doubts, but like I said, he is a rare bird.
Who gets the 1st overall pick of next years draft?
What do you think of Kerry Rhodes? Can he do anything better than Rolle did in Az?
More experience at safety. Probably less mental errors. More limited though. Not a bad replacement though. I expected worse. He isn't a trained killer back there though, but pretty much does everything well, but nothing great.
Matt the King of Chats! Hey when healthy wouldnt you put Ryan Harris as one of the Best RT in the League? Harris and a Healthy Clady are the 2 best young Tackles in the game.
Harris is in the conversation for sure. And he and Clady are just about as good as any pair going. Pretty high on Tenn and Miami's tandem though. Same with Balt if Oher would stay at RT and Gaither at LT. Carolina's pair is strong, but prob last on this list.
So if Buf gets the 1st pick then who do they take? Luck or Locker? I'm a big Luck fan.
I am not getting into that-and haven't scouted the 2011 draft quite yet. But QB seems pretty logical to me. One with a big arm, good mobility.
I've always thought that Roscoe Parrish was a talented but underutilized player in Buffalo. Will he have a bigger role under Chan Gailey?
Obviously someone needs to step up. Parrish could improve his production I suppose with Gailey, who does know offense. But he just isn't dynamic to be as small/finesse as he is. Not a banger in any sense of the word. In the end, I would rather motion Spiller out to the slot out of 21 or 22 personnel than have Parrish in that role with 11 personnel.
Could you throw out some names of the top blocking FBs in your opinion?
Wow-don't get asked that much. Is Lorenzo Neal still around? LOL...This isn't like me, but drawing a bit of blank. Pure blockers. Mughelvi comes to mind. A guy like Kuhn. The dude in Tenn who I always forget about.
Do Abe Elam, D'Qwell Jackson and Matt Roth realize that they wouldn't sniff a starting lineup for over 50% of the league? I understand the need to "get paid" in the NFL but given the structure I don't understand their hold outs at all.
Jackson is clearly the best of the bunch. Roth was unemployed not that long ago-he did play well for the Browns, but like Elam, he is extremely replaceable.
Since you've spent a lot of time talking tackles, what do you think of the young LT of my beloved Bears, Chris Williams? I think the Bears surge at the end of the year had a lot to do with Williams gaining experience and being flipped back to the left side, where he obviously belongs.
Much better suited for LT than RT and showed that to finish the season. He will be a massive improvement over Pace, who flat out embarrassed himself last season. He could stand to get stronger for sure, but this move is long over due.
Matt - isn't Jenkins taking a few reps at OLB being overblown? I would think it could be part of one of Caper's sub packages, but I doubt he'll play signicant snaps there. Your thoughts?
Torn on that one. That guy is a freak. He might just surprise everyone and excel in that role. Even if it is a sub package situation, the idea is really growing on me. They could be huge-if they want-across their front five with Jenkins, Jolly, Raji, Pickett and Mathews...and they wouldn't be all that short of athletic ability. Can Jenkins really cover? I don't know that yet.
Matt, little background on Matt Roth, we went to the same high school, all the talent in the world, went to Iowa, in his senior year he was still "undecided" and now holding out with the Browns...tells me he either needs to get his act together or needs to find a new agent.
I remember him coming out of school. Let's just say that he might not process information particularly well from what I understand.
Do u think the ravens have a chance to win the super bowl this year!!!!!!
Really leaning towards a Ravens/Cowboys Super Bowl show down, but can't say that I am sold on that prediction yet. Flacco still scares me to be THAT guy right now.
The Raiders appear to be moving rookie LaMarr Houston to defensive end after playing defensive tackle for much of his college career at Texas. What do they see?
I see a team transitioning to a 3-4. He and Seymour at End. Houston is a crazy-good athlete. I have a hunch that he is going to surprise right off the bat at this level. Also, might be a real good interior pass rusher on throwing downs. Guy can really move. Explosive. Powerful. Still learning.
USA won and goes on to round 2
Congrats! Good news of course. But still-it's soccer.
M-Dub in Oakland other than Zach Miller there aren't many other threats, but do you believe Campbell can create so chemistry with Louis Murphy or Chaz Schilens?
I hope those are the two starters. Schilens in particular intrigues me. Wish he would have stayed healthy last year. We shall see. Those guys aren't world beaters, but they can be solid for Campbell. Just where are the difference makers on O?
Whats your take on Steve Breaston? I think he will be able to produce well as the #2 guy no problem I just hope he stays more durable than Q ever was.
Watched Stevie since his junior year of HS here in Pittsburgh. I like him a lot, but I think he is a #3 and Doucet is the
Is there a chance you will ever participate in a 2 hour chat?
Sue-why not? Have done some marathon type situations including Cover it Live every game day for like 8 hours and CIL for the entire draft. However, I must say adios for now...and if my bosses are reading this, let's not do the 2 hour chat this time of year-or when Team USA is playing! Good stuff as always though folks. Take care
