Chat with Jesse Rogers

jesse rogers
  (2:08 PM)

Hello from Sin City. NHL awards tonight. Im not poolside though I will be in a while! Lots to talk about. Lets get to it.

Alex (Bourbonnais, Il)

Rumor has the Hawks shopping Byfuglien and asking for a first rounder and a prospect in return. Are there any teams willing to meet the price, and if not what can they expect in return for him?

jesse rogers
  (2:10 PM)

That rumor is true. The Hawks sent out word that everybody outside of about 5 guys is available. I dont think they will get that for Buff but if the pick is number 23 instead of number 3 that could change things...his contract isnt a bad one right now...1 yr. left at 3 mil so its possible...the hawks are going to ask for a good prospect the further down the pick would be...i dont think he goes

Lauren (Wheaton)

Ok, who in your opinion is being chopped by Friday?

jesse rogers
  (2:11 PM)

I think Versteeg for sure. Nothing is definite but thats my guess

Jonah (Lockport)

Is Antti Niemi worth $4 mill a year?

jesse rogers
  (2:12 PM)

Yes. He won a cup..he's as good as many of the 4-5 mil dollar guys. See Huet

Cristobal Huet (France)

Will I be playing in Rockford next year?

jesse rogers
  (2:12 PM)

I say back home in france or thereabouts

John (Quad Cities)

Jesse - I really would hate to see Ladd go. What's your feeling? Is he being shopped around? He's a great physical presence for the Hawks...which they need. Plus his skill set.

jesse rogers
  (2:13 PM)

Defnitely being shopped. Its too bad cause he wouldnt cost too much but even at 1.6 mil he might be a luxury...my guess is two main kind of guys go...steeg and ladd, or steeg and buff, etc. plus a few 4th line types

Josh (Nashville)

What is the likelyhood of a team poaching an RFA from the Hawks knowing that they can not match much of an increase due to the cap problems you all have?

jesse rogers
  (2:15 PM)

I think its possible but still unlikely...the compensation is huge...though for Hjarmalsson, the numbers might work for another team..but i think the hawks would match anything under 3 mil and anything over 3 or 4 mil is where the compensation jumps up...so its still doubtful..im guessing hammer would be the only one that could get one but i wouldnt discount a team dying for a goalie thats been there to go for niemi

Brent (Chicago)

What about the RFA's and UFA's? Will any of them be re-signed?

jesse rogers
  (2:16 PM)

Hammer and Niemi re-sign...I say all the others will be gone (maybe not fraser)

Ben (Chi)

will corey crawford back up niemi then?

jesse rogers
  (2:17 PM)

Tough to say. My first instinct would be yes unless in one of these trades they get some cheap veteran backup but I think it will be craw

Scott (Chicago)

Jesse a lot of talk on the Norris. Wynn sportsbook operator said he'd have Doughty as the favorite if it was legal, and you have said you think Keith is the frontrunner. Can you give us a little more on this?

jesse rogers
  (2:19 PM)

I talked to SOME media during the playoffs and it felt like Keith got more votes but that was very unscientific..i think it will be close but keith pulls it out...of course betting guys know more than anyone so maybe doughty should be the frontrunner!

Ted (Elmwood Park)

I would like to the Hawks to keep Sharp and have him play center like he has been doing. What do you think of him sticking around JR?

jesse rogers
  (2:20 PM)

IM pretty sure the hawks deemed him untouchable..sharp told me a while ago that he really didnt think he'd be traded but he may have been promised that from the previous regime...I think hes staying

bill (Chicago)

Do you think Seabrook may be shopped being that this is the last year of his contract ?

jesse rogers
  (2:21 PM)

Nah. You need someone to play D. He's a core guy..Hes still restricted after this year so they get a ton if he walks away that way...if he was unrestricted than maybe...

Tony (Mundelein)

Would any team have an interest in trading for Campbell considering the contract?

jesse rogers
  (2:22 PM)

Its doubtful but maybe a team that has cap space feels like its a campbell type of player away from going all the way...he has a no trade clause at least a partial one..i think he would veto any deal..hes very comfortable here

Tony (Mundelein)

How worried are the Hawks about offer sheets they can't match to Niemi & Hjalmarrson?

jesse rogers
  (2:26 PM)

From what Im told on good authority, Niemi will get done...the hawks know they cant rid themsleves of a guy that helped them to the Cup and I dont think niemi is going to be unreasonable..however im thinking a deal doesnt get done until after july 1 so the wild card really is HOW DO OTHER TEAMS VIEW NIEMI...thats the tough call..would they mortgage tons of draft picks to get him? I dont know but Im pretty sure he stays...To me hammer should get close to 3 mil but he might see campbell, seabrook, keith and say wheres my big payday...end of the day, they are both here,, I think!

Ryan (Elgin)

two days before the draft and the hawks havent made a move yet...any concerns?

jesse rogers
  (2:27 PM)

No, they need to make one byt after the draft basically..again, I think its versteeg unless they get a kings ransom for buff or maybe its Ladd that goes before they have to qualify him, etc. so one move will be easy to make...versteeg to ?? for a 2nd or 3rd...done

Josh (Chicago)

See any situation where Versteeg stays? He's a good goal scorer and really came through in some key moments...

jesse rogers
  (2:28 PM)

No, I dont..unless other teams really covet buff, etc. but steeg seems most likely

Jason (Montreal)

Has anyone address the exact number of bonuses that will be rolled over onto this year's cap number from Kane and Toews?

jesse rogers
  (2:29 PM)

Pretty sure its just that 1.3 mil toews got for Conn Smythe

Tim (Lombard)

Busish's contract is up, everyone is saying they won't re-sign him but he was making 700k last year. Why wouldn't they re-sign him at that amount, its cap friendly, your thoughts??

jesse rogers
  (2:31 PM)

My gut says he wants more playing time and even a shot at being on the third line..I dont know if he gets that here even with others leaving. I dont think Q is a huge fan for whatever reason...plus he might get a slight raise and even a few hundred thousand can make a difference

Chris (Glenview)

Hey Jesse, how's Vegas? How many of the Hawks made the trip out?

jesse rogers
  (2:31 PM)

Its hot! kane is here, toews, sharp, not sure about seabrook...awards should be cool.

Ryne (Streator)

Who are the guys not being shopped? Kane, Toews, Hossa, Keith, Sharp and Seabrook?

jesse rogers
  (2:32 PM)

yes.from what I understand

Nick (Deerfield, IL)

How funny would it be to see Burish lace it up for the Flyer's next year...wonder how Pronger would recieve him.

jesse rogers
  (2:33 PM)

Im told Bur feels bad about that. Not a great move right afte winning the cup...think there will be some behind the scenes mending on that one

Tony (Mundelein)

I read that the cap is going up to 59.64 mil next season, can you confirm?

jesse rogers
  (2:33 PM)

Yes..about that

Bryan (Wheeling)

I believe Kyle Beach should be looked at very deeply to make the team this coming season. He was 3rd in Goals and 5th in PIMS in the WHL. Do you think he is a sure fit to make the team?

jesse rogers
  (2:35 PM)

I do. I think hes at the point of not getting more out of his game at a lower level...he needs NHL coaching in my opinion

Dave (Naperville)

J.R. do you see the Blackhawks adopting a Red Wings approach to offseasons with the Bowman's in the building? Seemed like Detroit had a core nucleus of 4 or 5 players and added older/grizzled veterans to build around year to year. Now, the Hawks have their core in Kane, Toews, Hossa, Keith and Seabrook, do you see them doing something similar now?

jesse rogers
  (2:36 PM)

In a way..but maybe not with grizzled veterans so much as those that are willing to take less to play here and a chance at a cup...

Ryan (Elgin)

bolland isnt untouchable but i dont see the hawks trading him with the lack of center depth..do you agree?

jesse rogers
  (2:37 PM)

They would have to be blown away...

Janice (Naperville)

Any news/feelings concerning on our coaches, specifically Haviland and Torchetti? Do you think the rumors of Torch going to Atl are true?

jesse rogers
  (2:38 PM)

Torch is gone...and here's one you can take to the bank..Mike Kitchen will replace him

Nick (Deerfield, IL)

Saw the rumor of Ladd to the Canucks for some picks. Ladd and Kesler on the same team (or even the same line), that would be priceless too. I wonder if linemates ever dropped the gloves with each other in a game. Do you think that kind of deal could really happen?

jesse rogers
  (2:39 PM)

I do think it could happen...doesnt matter about the bad blood as long as the checks cash every two weeks

Kathy (Genoa, IL)

Jesse when are they going to re-sign Seab's? any update if he and Wiz mended fences with the wedding coming up

jesse rogers
  (2:41 PM)

They did mend fences...cant tell you about seabs..nothing guaranteed about that...wont happen right away...maybe mid-season if their cap picture is clear or maybe he plays it out and we see at the end of the year...i just dont know until we see hammer and niemi's deals, etc

Ryan (Elgin)

pretend your stan bowman...you get identical offers for buff and steeg...whos leaving?

jesse rogers
  (2:42 PM)

Steeg

Steve (La Grange Park)

Jesse, I shopped this idea around to some friends with about 50/50 liking it. If we are assuredly losing all if not most of the middle range guys..why not shop them at a package. Ladd, Buff, Steeg and a future pick for Edmonton first pick this year. Gives us a really bright future, room to sign and gives Edmonton a legit first line next year and playoff potential. And they are young with experience. Thoughts?

jesse rogers
  (2:46 PM)

Too much to give up if you want to win the cup right away again...and franlkly too much for number 1

Tony (Mundelein)

Do you see the Hawks making some deals with either Florida or Atlanta considering Tallon & Dudley are in the fold with those teams?

jesse rogers
  (2:48 PM)

I think there is a chance but not just because they know each other...those are new GM's trying to rebuild and the hawks have talent to give so it makes sense...

Pavan (Atlanta)

How will the blackhawks be able to replace all the players they are going to lose (Steeg, Ladd, etc.)? Any good young players coming up or are they going to sign cheap players to plug the holes?

jesse rogers
  (2:49 PM)

I really thin it will come from within..have to beliebe bickell has a spot, I think Beach will as well..

Ted (Elmwood Park)

Another interesting question. What are the rumors of the Hawks and Chicago Wolves teaming up as their minor league team?

jesse rogers
  (2:50 PM)

I dont know any details but it does make sense and there is that connection with Kevin Cheveldayoff...hawks asst. GM used to be the GM for wolves

James (CHicago)

What about aliu? Is on the horizon?

jesse rogers
  (2:51 PM)

I dont think so...for some reason I get the feeling he's on the outs

Pat (Chicago)

What players, if any, would you personally like to see return that you don't think will be back? Just curious.

jesse rogers
  (2:52 PM)

I like Burish..always have...And I like Buff personally..for some reason it doesnt bother me if he sleepwalks through some games as long as hes there in the spring

Billy (Woodridge)

Why are they waiting so long to put Huet in the minors?

jesse rogers
  (2:53 PM)

Dont have to do anything until Sept. My guess is he doesnt play one game in rockford..hes on another team or in europe

Victor (Itasca)

With Torch leaving do you think the PP will improve? I thought it lacked especially at home, who will run the PP

jesse rogers
  (2:54 PM)

Cant answer that. I put that home thing on the players not the coaches

Tom (Crystal Lake)

I realize that if Niemi accepted an extended deal, his annual salary would probably be less. However, given recent suspect goalie signings, would the Hawks be comfortable offering Niemi more than approximately 4 years? Thank you.

jesse rogers
  (2:56 PM)

Thats the million dollar question...I say they should offer a long term deal..at a reduced number..then the contract might still be tradeable and we arent asking every year who the goaltender is..at some point you have to have some faith and take a leap and reward a guy...there are no gaurantees but what more could he have done. he proved himself..settle that postion once and for all...

Bernie Lomax (Beach House)

Jesse - What are the odds the Hawks re-sign Kim Johnnson?

jesse rogers
  (2:56 PM)

Can the odds be less than zero? If so, take 'em!

Tony (Mundelein)

Did the Hawks have a say in who they played for the home opener (banner ceremony), or was that stickly a league decision?

jesse rogers
  (2:57 PM)

All league

Rich (Evanston)

What about Buff, Steeg and Niemi to Flor. for Volkun- all cap issues gone in one swipe, Tallon gets three building blocks, Hawks get rock solid no questions goalie.

jesse rogers
  (2:58 PM)

Hmm..vokun cap number a little less than those three combined and u still have to replace the forwards so dont like it

Steve (Chicago)

Hey JR, do you expect to see Kyle Beach in a Blackhawks uni next year?

jesse rogers
  (2:59 PM)

Yes

Lucy (Oak Park)

How about Jack Skille? He ever going to fit on this team?

jesse rogers
  (3:00 PM)

I doubt it. Wont crack the top 6...

Ryan (Elgin)

would we really be able to keep buff past next year?...if we keep versteeg were at least guranteed 2 more years, but if buff's playoff performance is anything like this years...hes in for a raise that we likely cant afford

jesse rogers
  (3:02 PM)

Need BUff more than steeg, I think...and he seems to be more accepting of the role in front of the net more now than he did after last year's playoffs...steeg is more replaceable than buff..simple as that...fig out the contract later...

Nick (Deerfield, IL)

any of the guys staying in touch with Cam Barker? Watching the finals had to sting. I know his name can't go on the cup (not on the roster for the playoffs), but will the team get him a ring or something?

jesse rogers
  (3:02 PM)

For sure he'll be taken care of..they are still close with him

Roger (Aurora)

Have you looked at the sch. for next year, why all the back to back games?

jesse rogers
  (3:03 PM)

Dont know the answer to that..had the most last year...Total guess but maybe chicago being smack dab in the middle of the country allows for it since the flites are never too long but Im not even sure how that plays out...I simply dont know..I like it because it means less morning skates to attend!!

Janice (Naperville)

Thoughts on Hendry?

jesse rogers
  (3:06 PM)

Have a few hendry questions..have not looked into his situation too much...he needs to be more consistent..dont think they will be upset if they could move him but at such a cheap price I could see him returning..I'll call his agent and find out some info

Ace (Chicago)

Can the Hawks just buyout the remainder of Huet's contract and not affect the cap?

jesse rogers
  (3:06 PM)

No. It has a reduced affect on the cap...but it still affects it. He'd actually be on the books for 4 more years but at a reduced hit

Tony (Mundelein)

If Huet's situation is numbered like so: 1=bought out 2=sent to minors 3=traded, what order would you put them in?

jesse rogers
  (3:08 PM)

4) Europe...which has the net affect of the minors..off the books but still paid..then I'd go with buyout

jesse rogers
  (3:10 PM)

Thats going to do it for today..gotta get some sun..I'll be on espn 1000 at 3:25 today chicago time..follow me on twitter @espnchihawks and keep an eye o nthe website...something is going to break soon and we'll have it for you! great questions..leaving for L.A. tomorrow. draft on friday...though the draft is a bit secondary with the hawks on the verge of doing something but of course those players do become important...NHL awards tonight at 6 pm chi time..Ill be tweeting from my seat! Dont have this comfimed but I think Eddie O. might be presenting the Norris. Have to track down eddie and ask him. talk to you later
