Happy Draft Day everyone! Thanks for coming to the chat today. I know there are lots of questions and we'll try to get to all 30 teams in the next hour. Be patient. My phone is ringing off the hook and may have to take a call or two.
Is John Wall The Best Draft Prospect Since LeBron
That may be a stretch considering that Kevin Durant and Dwight Howard was drafted since LeBron. But he's a Top 10 prospect since the LeBron era.
Do you think John Wall has a greater future than Derrick Rose?
Potentially because I think he's a better passer and a slightly better athlete. Rose has a better body and is a better scorer. But Wall a more pure point guard.
Are the Wizards making progress in acquiring another first-round pick?
They and 20 other teams are trying. OKC has multiple picks. So does the Grizzlies. Celtics may be willing to sell. Wolves are willing to sell 16 and 23. Question is ... what are the Wizards offering.
Any truth to the Carter for Arenas talks. I hear its all talk but any chance it could happen?
Sounds pretty far fetched. I do think Washington would love to move him and have been exploring some things. But he has 4 years, $80 million left on his contract. That's the problem.
Could the Sixers trade Elton Brand? And would that affect the #2 pick?
That's the one scenario out there where they might trade the No. 2 pick. It's the only way to get someone to take Elton Brand's 3 years, $51 million off their hands. If they can't move Brand ... they'll take Turner at No. 2.
Evan Turner will be a bust. His shot isn't consistent and he isn't athletic ...your thoughts?
That's pretty harsh Sean considering that he does EVERYTHING else that a basketball player does well. And I wouldn't call him unathletic. He's just not an explosive athlete the way Wall is. But he's not a stiff by any stretch of the imagination. I do think his ceiling is lower than Wall's, but I think he's going to be a terrific player. Superstar? Not sure about that. But good NBA player? Gotta believe a lot his skills will translate at the next level.
I get the feeling the Nets are smoke screening about picking Johnson and have been set on Favors all along. What's your take?
That was the word that came to me last night. I posted something on True Hoop about this. The Nets were trying to entice Minnesota to give them 16 to swap picks. Didn't work. Minnesota was comfortable taking Favors. If they keep the pick, it's going to be Favors I'm told.
Hey Chad, why do you think the Nets would take a project like Favors over the NBA-ready Wes Johnson?
They believe he's the best talent available. I can't argue with them. I think Wes Johnson is more NBA ready and will be a good player. But Favors has the physical tools to dominate. He's a risk because his freshman season was a little underwhelming, but I blame that mostly on the team he was on and Georgia Tech's poor point guard play. For what it's worth, I was talking to Chris Bosh today (another Georgia Tech alum) and he thinks Favors will be a stud.
Will the Nets trade the No. 3 pick
Probably not. But they are listening. I think it would take a deal that gave them back a young All-Star or borderline All-Star and didn't hurt their cap position. Unlikely but you never know. A lot of teams are interested in that No. 3 pick.
With the Wolves locked into the #4 w/ Favors/Johnson, how likely are they to make a trade up to get George? How high will they need to get to take him? Great job this week!
I do think the Wolves will take Favors or Johnson whoever is there. If they get Wes Johnson he's a great fit for them on the wing and yes, they really like Paul George. I just don't think he's on the board at No. 16. My guess is they have to get up to No. 10 or 11 to get him. They could try to get the 10 pick from Indiana, but my guess is that David Kahn's comments in the media about Indiana have killed any likelihood that the two teams ever do a deal.
What are the wolves hopeing for in a Big Al trade? what could they get realistically?
Not much anymore. They explored moving him to a number of teams and I think they've found that his value isn't as high as they thought. Teams are concerned about his knee and his contract. When you have the Grizzlies refusing to do a Al Jefferson for Zach Randolph swap ... his stock must be near rock bottom.
How certain is it the Kings will take DMC at 5?
Can never be certain with Geoff Petrie. He always plays things close to the vest and he hates media leaks. Everything I'm hearing is that DeMarcus Cousins is the pick. What scares me is that I keep hearing it, everywhere. Very un-Kings like. I know there's a faction that really likes Greg Monroe. If the Kings take Monroe, I wouldn't be shocked.
Recent rumors have the warriors taking Udoh over Monroe. This is hard to understand as Udoh is a less talented version of Anthony Randolph and Brandan Wright. Why not take Monroe, who may actually grow into a center and play alongside Randolph and Wright?
I agree with you Levo. But this is the Warriors we're talking about right? And remember, the Warriors aren't standing pat here. They are talking to everyone about potential deals and my guess is that either Randolph or Wright are wearing different jerseys in the fall.
Chad, would you have pulled the trigger on the proposed Al Jefferson for Tayshaun Prince and the #7 if you were the Pistons?
No. Too much money for Jefferson and too many worries about his knee.
I saw on your latest draft the Pistons taking Greg Monroe. A lot of people wants them to take Cousins, who is a better rebounder. Is Monroe as good or a better post defender than Cousins? The Pistons needs someone to shut down the middle.
Pistons would love to take Cousins, but it's very unlikely that he's there. More likely they're choosing between Monroe and Ed Davis. Ed Davis is probably a better fit, but he's a project. Monroe is very skilled. He plays a different style than Detroit plays, but I think both sides can adapt. Monroe reminds me a bit of Vlade Divac.
Is Aminu to the Clippers the most sure-thing pick outside of the top 5? There seems to be a very strong consensus that it will happen.
Not as sure as some are making it out to be. I know they like one other mystery player there at 8. I've heard it may be Luke Babbitt. But yes, they like Aminu a lot and he seems like a pretty good fit long-term for the Clippers.
Do you think the Clippers Trade the No. 8 pick to the Bulls for Deng and the No. 17th pick?
Would be a good deal for both teams, but I'm told the Clippers aren't interested. If it was just Deng for a second rounder ... maybe.
Doesn't Greg Monroe belong in a Jazz uniform? Any way he drops at all or for Utah to move up to obtain him?
I think the Jazz would've liked any of the players in the Top 7 -- Monroe included. Yes, he would've been a good fit. But if he's gone they're faced with either Ed Davis or Patrick Patterson in the front court or Xavier Henry, Luke Babbitt or Gordon Hayward on the wing. As of this morning the team was still debating what to do. So ... I'll just give my two cents here. I think they should take Hayward.
will the jazz make a trade tonight? or if they don't who will the pick
I think they're exploring a lot of deals. Kevin O'Connor, in my opinion, is one of the top 5 GMs in the league. He's looking at lots of different scenarios. I could see the Jazz picking up a second first round pick somewhere in the teens.
Chad are the Pacers any closer to acquiring one of the many point guards theyve been after?
They've been working the phones. It's much harder to make a trade than the average fan realizes. Getting the money to work, the pieces to fit and then getting everyone to agree on the value of players takes forever. My experience is that teams overvalue their own players and undervalue other teams players. That makes it tough and why 99 percent of deals never happen. The Pacers have had their hearts broken last year at the draft and again at the trade deadline with deals that fell apart at the last minute. Here's hoping, for Pacers fans, that today brings them a little luck.
Chad, I cannot decide if Gordon Hayward is way undervalued or way overvalued. Thoughts? I wouldn't mind having him on my team though.....
I like him. He's not a superstar. But he's got a great basketball IQ, he's a good athlete and he I think he could return to that great shooting form we saw as a freshman. He also has potential as a good defender. As a No. 2 or No. 3 guy on a team, I think he has a lot of promise. I think 9 to 15 is the right range for him.
How much stock do you put into the rumors that the Hornets are shopping CP3 around?
Very little. I think teams are trying to get him. I think William Wesley tried to broker something. I don't think ownership is going to trade him, at least not right now. More likely that they package Darren Collison and Emeka Okafor to relieve the financial situation.
Latest word on the Hornets??
Xavier Henry, Patrick Patterson, Luke Babbitt, Gordon Hayward are the four guys. Don't know who they'll choose.
If you were a Grizzlies fan, how worried would you be about Heisley making the picks tonight?
Afraid. I think, for obvious reasons given Rudy Gay's impending free agency, that Paul George is in the mix there. Ditto for Hayward or Babbitt. But I wouldn't be stunned to see a pick come out of left field via Heisley. Damion James was in there on Wednesday, had a great workout and Heisley was around. Could be a dark horse.
What are the Grizzlies planning to do with all their picks?
I think 25 and 28 are for sale. Just waiting for the highest bidder.
What are your thoughts on the multiple rumours of the Raptors looking to move down (Blazers and OKC)? Looks like they think one of Bradley or Bledsoe will be available later down. Thoughts?
If they're moving down from 13 to 18 and 21 I do think they could get either Bradley or Bledsoe with one pick and then the big they like Solomon Alabi with the other pick. If they stay at 13, they probably take either Bledsoe, Bradley, Patrick Patterson or Cole Aldrich.
chad the word on the local radio is that the rockets are trying to trade up to draft cousins? any truth to this
Lots of teams are trying to do that. Remember the Rockets have assets. They have those Knicks picks and Jordan Hill to shop.
Who's in the Rockets radar?
Tough to say, but hear Cole Aldrich, Xavier Henry a lot.
Any thoughts on the Bucks pre-draft trades (Maggette, CDR) and how they might affect their draft?
I liked both of them for Milwaukee. Yes, they took on some money, but it's not as bad as people are making it out to be because they also owed a lot of money to Gadzurich and Bell. Maggette and CDR will help in the scoring department. The defense? Not so much. As far as draft goes, I've been told it will have no bearing. I think Xavier Henry, Patrick Patterson and a dark horse, Larry Sanders are all in the mix here.
What do you see the Bulls doing tonight?
Trying their best to clear more cap space. With Miami cutting right and left and NJ contemplating the same thing, the Bulls are trying hard to get either Hinrich or Deng off their books so they can afford to max deals. I know it's draft night, but truthfully, a lot of what happens tonight is really about July 1st and LeBron.
Do the Bulls like anyone in this draft or do they want out?
I think they like Damion James, James Anderson and Avery Bradley.
What do you see the Thunder doing tonight?
They're trying to get up into the Top 10. I keep hearing Gordon Hayward is their target, though Cole Aldrich is also a possibility. They have a pretty compelling package with Eric Maynor, 18, 21 and 26. If they stay at their picks I think Larry Sanders, Solomon Alabi, Daniel Orton, Eric Bledsoe all in the mix.
Chad are the Celtics still shopping their pick? What about the rumors about them shopping Kendrick Perkins with the pick? What gives??
Danny is always aggressive and I think he knows he needs to either supplement his team or tear it down. If someone will take Perkins and his knee problems, he'd do it. I think Danny would trade anyone on their roster, including KG or Rondo, for the right deal. And with Paul Pierce contemplating opting out of his deal and Sheed on the verge or retirement, there are scenarios where Boston is sitting at 20 million in cap room this summer.
How does Tiago Splitter impact what the Spurs do tonight? Are they working under the assumption that he's coming next year or staying in Europe?
Deal isn't done, but I think they are hopeful that it will be soon. It may affect them. I've had them taking Craig Brackins here, but I'm begging to hear that they make take Jordan Crawford if he's on the board.
Any idea what's up with the Blazers? Are they making a big trade? Will KP still be the GM in 24 hours? Will Fernandez still be a Blazer in 6 hours?
KP is trying. Love him. The guy is not going down without a fight. He's trying to move up, get a veteran, you name it. Looks like the Fernandez to the Raptors deal has cooled. As for Pritchard's future, let's just say his bags are packed.
Sorry everyone, I have to run to other duties here at ESPN. For the first time in a few drafts, we didn't have a trade break in the middle. Keep coming back to our site throughout the day. We'll continue to update our mock draft as new information rolls in. Have a great Draft Day!!!!
