Chat with Ohm Youngmisuk

Ohm
  (12:57 PM)

Hey everybody! Did you all see Team USA. Incredible. Alright, let's get this thing started. Fire away!

A-Town (Florida)

How big of a loss is Hixon and who steps up as punt / kick returner?

Ohm
  (1:00 PM)

A-Town, It's not something to be overlooked for sure. Hixon was well-respected in the locker room. Just about everybody loved the guy and the coaches as well. He may not have been that scintillating play-maker on special teams like a Josh Cribbs type but he is solid and you knew what you got with him. Now the Giants have a major question mark at punt returner. Looks like Mario Manningham, Aaron Ross and Sinorice Moss are the candidates to replace him. Jerry Reese could go outside as well. And Antrel Rolle has fielded some punts in practices. My guess is one of the first three.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

NFL Stadiums the most expensive concession stand.

Ohm
  (1:01 PM)

CF, no idea. But I paid nearly five bucks for a bottle of water at the New Meadowlands Stadium. But that's expected. Practically costs the same when you go see a movie these days.

The Duke (The Dirty Jersey)

O-Dawg, Any big reasons Micah Johnson got waived? or just not enough roster spots, I know there was a lot of buzz on him. Also do you see the Giants picking up anyone off of waivers? Maybe a punter? And finally what are your thoughts on Shawn O'Hara taking punt returns? I couldnt tackle him, could you? HA!

Ohm
  (1:05 PM)

The Duke, wud up? Well, probably not enough roster spots and I do get the sense that the Giants are content with what they got at linebackers. It would have been hard for Johnson to really get a chance to stand out.

A-Town (Florida)

Honestly is Kenny Phillips done or are all those optimistic statements about his progress true?

Ohm
  (1:07 PM)

A-Town, I don't think KP is done. I think they just need to take it real slow with him and be very cautious. We don't know how he will look once he is back in there with pads on and in camp. He says he is making progress and no swelling in the knee is positive.

Andiamo (work)

Yo Ohm, how goes it?Really don't have much to ask today....I guess the only thing I been thinking about is the comment made recently by our upstanding OC. If the Gmen coaching staff are hell bent on moving Diehl inside, why has I recently read comments made by Jerry Reese that Diehl may be "too tall" to play LG?Why did Reese go out and draft Petrus (a G) if the Giants were planning on moving Diehl inside? this year was pretty deep class for Tackles....yeah, yeah, i know "best player available"....please spare me that one though. and last time i checked Kareem McKenzie's back wasn't' getting any healthier?

Ohm
  (1:11 PM)

Andiamo, dude, what's your first name already? LOL. Ahh, Mr. Gilbride. I get the sense you aren't a fan. Well, I do get the sense, like you, that the management and coaches want a youth movement on the line and that they want to slowly faze Seubert out. Now you know he's not going down with a fight. They think Diehl is versatile. I hear you on the tackle situation. Why not just draft another tackle? But I think they took Petrus wanting to add depth on the line and find a guy who will replace Seubert eventually. With Diehl, they probably figure they can always move him back to tackle if need be when McKenzie is hurt or done and they get Beatty in to get some much needed experience in the meantime until then.

Ryan (NY)

The Bills are winning the AFC east this year. Take that to the bank

Ohm
  (1:12 PM)

Ryan, good luck with that homey.

Will (Utah)

Why is Aaron Ross being considered at PR/KR? Given that he is always nicked up as is, why subject him to those kind of hits?

Ohm
  (1:12 PM)

Will, that is probably why I wouldn't put him back there. But Aaron returned punts some in college so they are looking to see what they got there. But yeah, I think I'd take my chances with Sinorice Moss and not risk Manningham either.

BigJim07 (Ft. Lauderdale)

Any updates on Kenny Phillips? Does he start week 1?

Ohm
  (1:13 PM)

BigJ, the latest is KP says he is very encouraged with the fact that there is no swelling in his knee and that he is on track to practice in camp. He says he will ready to go at least once a day in camp starting in August. But the Giants need to and will take it slowly.

Cameron (California)

Pat Hanlon reported Petrus and Dodge agreed to terms this morning. Any slight idea when we may see Jospeh and JPP sign?

Ohm
  (1:14 PM)

I actually just got that too so if there are some pauses in the chat it's because I got to file something on Dodge. Already wrote about Petrus in the blog... I think they will come shortly. They waived five on Monday. But I think JPP will be last. My guess is Joseph is next.

Landon Donovan [via mobile]

USA! USA! USA!

Ohm
  (1:18 PM)

Sorry for the delay... had to post a blog with the latest signing of punter Matt Dodge... and as for my man Landon... I may have to name my second-born after Landon. First born will be named after Mateen Cleaves!

francis (ireland)

Ive read that the two undrafted rookie wide receivers were doing well in minicamp. will either make the roster, instead of sinorice moss, or just sit in the practice squad for a year?

Ohm
  (1:21 PM)

Francis from Ireland! Really? Wow. You might be talking about Rutgers WR Tim Brown and maybe Victor Cruz from UMass. Both have had their moments but my guess is Moss sticks, especially with Hixon's injury. I don't see either leap-frogging Moss. Brown and Cruz could definitely end up on the practice squad.

Vinh (DC)

Being a Spartan, what were your thoughts on the Izzo situation?

Ohm
  (1:23 PM)

My man Vinh, you a Spartan too? From DC, my hometown? I had a long discussion with my Spartan dawg Muhsin Muhammad yesterday and this is what he told me. "LeBron may be the King and the King doesn't leave his throne in Cleveland. But Izzo is God and God doesn't leave heaven in East Lansing." I couldn't say it any better. Izzo wasn't going to go to Cleveland without any assurances that LeBron was going to stay. I am not convinced though that Izzo's decision to stay means LeBron is definitely gone. My guess is he is going to leave but I don't think Izzo was able to find out anything for sure. He just made the right decision to stay and not take the risk.

A-Town (Florida)

I haven't heard much about Jay Alford? Will he be ready for training camp and is he fully recovered from his injury?

Ohm
  (1:25 PM)

A-Town, Jay tweaked his knee a few weeks ago tripping over another player during practice. He sat out the veteran minicamp and says he will be ready to go by training camp. They are loaded at DT but I think if he stays healthy and rebounds from his injury, Alford can contribute.

Andiamo (work)

is this thing on?

Ohm
  (1:25 PM)

Sorry, had to do some work and my boss called during the chat.

Cameron (California)

Any idea if Fewell will be running a pure Tampa Two or some variation to match the Giant's personnel?

Ohm
  (1:26 PM)

Cameron, safeties coach Dave Merritt said a few weeks ago that Fewell is actually anything but a Tampa-2 guy and that he employs multiple, multiple schemes. I think you will see some zone coverage from his secondary but he will mix things up. Safeties will have a lot of responsibilities to mask and camouflage and communicate things. I can see Antrel Rolle having a huge role in this defense.

Ben (NJ)

and the knicks sign who??

Ohm
  (1:28 PM)

Ben, we are closing in on July 1! I don't know. Do the Knicks even know? Nope. All depends on what King James does. Just pray that they don't mess things up when LBJ visits. My guess is they go after LBJ and Bosh first. Then look at Joe Johnson and Bosh as a combo. Sounds like D-Wade is out of the picture but I would love to see D-Wade in NYC.

A-Town (Florida)

Any thoughts on the progress of Andre Brown and does Brandon Jacobs have much left in the tank due to his brutal running style?

Ohm
  (1:29 PM)

Andre Brown is looking good and cutting and slashing. I think he could definitely be that third back they are looking for. I do think Brandon has something left in the tank. It's just can he stay healthy with that power running style and how big he is. He takes some big shots but he delivers them as well.

Ohm

Ryan (NY)

Mateen Cleaves Youngmisuk... sounds like the first pick in the 2031 NBA draft to me

Ohm
  (1:30 PM)

Ryan, how does Mateen Plaxico Youngmisuk sound to you? LOL. Spartans for life!

Andiamo (work)

ohm, my name is Adam....who do you think will be the Giants best Corner this year?

Ohm
  (1:30 PM)

Adam... I think C-Web has a lot to prove. Kind of took a big step back last year. I think TT is really solid. My guess is C-Web and then TT right behind him. I wonder how C-Web will do in Fewell's system and in some zone coverage.

David (Montville, NJ)

Ohm, love your tweets, who has more catches this year Barden or Manningham?

Ohm
  (1:32 PM)

D, thanks dude! Thanks for following homey. Manningham is going to have more catches if he stays healthy. Barden still has a lot to do to get playing time. Has to show more consistency. Manningham vs Nicks, though... that is the question.

Ohm
  (1:33 PM)

Yo, anybody watching this crazy Wimbledon match? Insane. Did you all know I play tennis? LOL. I idolized Stefan Edberg. Probably too much information for you guys. LOL.

Ohm
  (1:33 PM)

D, thanks dude! Thanks for following homey. Manningham is going to have more catches if he stays healthy. Barden still has a lot to do to get playing time. Has to show more consistency. Manningham vs Nicks, though... that is the question.

TS (Rockland County)

Ohm, Giants fans need an intervention. They keep suggesting that the Giants trade Manningham. First, it was for a LB. Now it's for a PR/KR. They need to come off that!

Ohm
  (1:34 PM)

TS, what up man? What? Really? Trading Manningham for a returner is ridiculous. I mean, maybe I'd consider trading him for Cribbs, a dynamic playmaking guy who can play receiver. But really, I'd hold onto Manningham. If his awareness improves, he stays healthy and the commitment is there, I like him, Smith and Nicks as a three receiver set for Eli. And I say this about a Wolverine too!

Cameron (California)

Your guess on what the starting lineup on the OL will look like with Beatty in the mix? Will he start at LT or RT and how does that affect everyone else's role?

Ohm
  (1:36 PM)

Cam... well, Shaun O'Hara thinks the starting five with be the same core five that has started for years. But the Giants are pushing hard to see what Beatty has got. I can see the core starting five start the first couple of games and then Beatty moves in with Diehl moving somewhere else to either the other tackle or guard spot since the Giants keep openly talking about it.

Mickey (NY)

Mateen Plaxico Youngmisuk is light years better than Stefan Edberg Youngmisuk

Ohm
  (1:36 PM)

Mickey, for a long time I was going to go with Stefan Youngmisuk. Now I just got to find a wife who will allow me to do that. LOL!

TS (Rockland County)

Nobody is talking about it but I'm worried about the punting situation. Feagles didn't have a strong leg anymore but he knew how to pin a team inside the 20. The Giants haven't had great special teams coverage and he covered a lot of deficiencies. Do the Giants really trust a rookie punter (and holder) or will they go for a veteran?

Ohm
  (1:40 PM)

TS, you got reason to worry. I know Feagles struggled at times last year but he was a rock. More than that, he was a weapon at times with his directional punting. Now you got a rookie as the frontrunner to replace him. Could Jerry Reese go outside? Yes, but I think Dodge is the guy. After they waived Bond, Dodge is the guy who is being groomed. It may be the last round in the draft but the Giants don't use their seventh-rounder on a punter if they don't think he can take the job.

Ohm

SdotMosa (Mastic NY)

I feel like the Giants are heading towards another 12-4 season. Call me crazy (or just a fan), but we have the same defense as the 2008 season + a few upgrades around the field. We don't have Bill Sheridan ruining the our chances defensivel, def a plus. Kenny Phillips is a beast, and i cant wait to see what he accomplish in a full year as a starter. As for our Offense, Eli Manning is that guy, everyone can hate but the dude gets it done. Breakout year for Nicks, and another 1200 yard season for Smith, and I bet he breaks his own reception record for the G-men...again.

Ohm
  (1:44 PM)

S.dot, wud up? Well, your thought process is the same as the Giants. I think Jerry Reese thinks the same. Add some more depth, some rookies to push the vets and have insurance in case of injuries. Throw in Antrel Rolle in the back and vet Deon Grant in case KP isn't ready and keep the offense the same and hope everybody stays healthy. And Fewell has already made more of an impact than Sheridan because the players respect Fewell. But while you can see them go 12-4, I think they can finish anywhere between 11 wins and 7 wins. A lot of things can go wrong. What if the running game doesn't get back on track? What if they don't have a middle linebacker?

A-Town (Florida)

Why didn't the Giants sign John Henderson? I know we have a lot of d tackles but he is a big body in the middle.

Ohm
  (1:45 PM)

A-Town, sounds like Henderson wanted too much and the Giants are loaded inside and probably liked what they saw in rookie Linval Joseph. Canty is huge too.

Jay (Nassau)

Ohm, congrats on the promotion to the 1st team. What is the sense "off the record" from players/coaches on Sintim?

Ohm
  (1:47 PM)

Thanks Jay... don't know about a promotion to first team? You mean going back to being a beat writer from doing features at the Daily News? I haven't really talked to a lot of guys yet about Sintim. I get the sense that some veterans do have questions about what these guys can do at linebacker. It's only natural. A lot of guys have a lot to prove.

RJ (NY)

Do you blame Rex Ryan at all for Revis' contract dispute? After all, it was Ryan that wouldn't shut up about how Revis is the best in the game. Now, Revis is making the organization cash the check that his coach's mouth wrote

Ohm
  (1:48 PM)

Ohm
  (1:48 PM)

RJ, wud up kid? I don't blame Rex at all. I know Rex has been pumping him up and making life tough for Tannenbaum. But what is Rex really saying that we didn't know anyways or that Tannenbaum didn't think or know about Revis Island? I don't blame Rex one bit. Long before him, the Jets have had their share of contract issues with players. Nothing to blame Rex for.

Andiamo (work)

All this talk about 4 aces....and getting pass rushers on the field at the same time.I'm sick of it. How come we're not entertaining a front of Tuck, Cofield, Linval/Alford/Bernard, and Canty at the opposite End position?Gaints D got gashed last year in the running game.....putting Canty on the outside will help and get more contain. I think it's an option that should be explored on running downs.

Ohm
  (1:50 PM)

Adam, yeah, I hear you. I think those four pass rushers at a time will be only in certain passing situations. I mean, you don't really want to see too much of a defensive end dropping back in coverage. I think with Fewell, he wants to get pressure on the QB and let his secondary go to work. He wants turnovers and he wants pressure on the QB. The Giants have versatility, a lot of pieces up front. Canty can move around but I haven't noticed him at DE or maybe I just missed some snaps in the OTAs.

Robert (New York)

Ohm, What are your thoughts on Canty and Sintim this season? Can we expect a big impact from either player?

Ohm
  (1:51 PM)

Rob, I think Canty will have an impact. Sintim has a lot to prove. He's pretty much the man at his spot and he's going to have to show he can do what the Giants expect of him.

Matt B (Princeton, NJ)

Hi Ohm, really enjoying the chat. I have a question about our defense. I understand that Perry is installing a more read-and-react defensive secondary, with players facing the quarterback, in zones. I am concerned about Sintim being able to cover in space. He came from Virginia as a pass rusher off the edge, and I don't think he has had much experience playing in space and in coverage. Do you anticipate he'll be on the field on 3rd downs? And if he is not, do any of the linebackers seem to be able to play in space that can contribute on passing downs?

Ohm
  (1:53 PM)

Matty, thanks dude! Appreciate it. Good question. On passing downs they can always use just two linebackers. Boley appears to be the best coverage linebacker they got. We don't know much because Fewell is still feeling out his pesonnel and we will know more in camp. Simply too early to answer this question. Sorry G.

Newt (Jacksonville)

With Hixon out, might we see Tyree lace 'em up for one last opportunity with Big Blue?

Ohm
  (1:54 PM)

Newt, well, Tyree is looking for a job. But I doubt it. I think they are looking for a returner if they add another special teamer. I think it's time to see Sinorice back there, personally.

TS (Rockland County)

If Jacobs has a bad year in 2010, do you think the Giants cut him? I'm not saying that he's done. I expect a big year out of him. However, he'll be 28 and big backs don't last that long, especially ones that can't avoid punishing hits. I think this is a make or break year for him. Anita Marks of Giants.com said that to him in an interview and he wasn't amused.

Ohm
  (1:55 PM)

TS, I think if Jacobs has a bad year, it's a bad year for the Giants. Then there will be a lot of changes. And I can see that scenario playing out. Did Anita say that to him? I didn't see it. Gonna have to look it up. I love seeing the big man deliver punishing hits to linebackers and corners and safeties. So much fun when to watch when he is healthy and running hard.

Jay (Nassau)

Yeah, I was referring to you being lead dog. Ralph was at the Daily News. You're better than him anyway. Watch Garafolo for the right way to do it.

Ohm
  (1:57 PM)

Jay... ahh, got it. Well, I kind of spelled Rich and Ralph at the News from time to time but really my job was to do NFL league features but then when the teams get good, I get around them a lot. Ralph is a very, very good beat man. He's been plugged in for years and knows the Giants very well. MG is the man as well. It's definitely a really hard beat, no doubt.

RJ (NY)

I wouldn't say there's nothing to blame Rex for. I blamed him when the homestyle buffet down the road ran out of food Friday night

Ohm
  (1:58 PM)

RJ, come on now! Rex is the man. Besides, Rex is all sexy Rexy now right? Last time I saw him, he lost weight. Rex is the man.

Bryan (Montclair, NJ)

Ohm, shouldn't the Knicks try to sign Bosh first in order to better entice Lebron to come here?

Ohm
  (1:59 PM)

B, problem is, I think Bosh wants to see what LeBron does first and they probably will be in touch and working together on that. You make sense but I think everybody looks to see what LeBron does first.

RJ (NY)

Rex is sexy? Idolized Stefan Edberg? It's like I don't even know you man haha

Ohm
  (2:00 PM)

RJ, don't get me wrong. I still have mad crushes on girls everywhere. But it's ok to have mancrushes too. Rex is great, love his press conferences and his swagger. And Edberg... few tennis players as smooth as the Swede.

Ohm
  (2:01 PM)

Alright homeys... that's been an hour I think. Thanks for spending time with me. Sorry for the pauses... Just had some work to do. See you guys next week and on the blog!
