Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (11:58 AM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to our weekly Freak chat. Happy July 4th weekend to all. A bit of a slow weekend with the holiday but we can reflect on the first half of the year and talk about the second half fights. Please check out my interview with HBO's Ross Greenburg today, in which he talks about the plans for HBO's second half of the year. The schedule and rankings are updated and there are some new blogs, so let's get to it.

Bobby (Louisville)

Mosley vs. Mora is NOT the fight we were looking for! Shame on golden boy and kudos to HBO for passing it up!

Dan Rafael
  (11:59 AM)

I agree on both points.

d843 charleston sc [via mobile]

Wus good D$,what a big let down this Haye dude has become!Do you see you see povet having any real chance beating wlad?

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

Haye runs his mouth and doesn't back up his words. That is hard to respect. As for the Klitschko-Povetkin fight, Povetkin is a worthy challenger but I don't think he beats Wlad. By the way -- I am told Showtime is seriously considering buying this fight to run Sept. 18 to run on same-day delay along with its live Lopez-Marquez fight.

Bobby (Louisville)

More realistic chance of happening next- Cotto/Margarito II or Cotto/Serge Druizunk?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

Cotto-Margs 2 without question.

Isaac (DC)

Dan, great great fight last weekend. To you What is more impresive...Chavez victory or Duddy's chin?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

Chavez looked very good compared to usual and looked very good against his most notable opponent, so I have to give him credit. Duddy, who fought his butt off but wasn't good enough, has always showed a good chin.

Joe (Vancouver, Canada)

Any word on who Arreola will fight on ESPN in August? I heard it may be Friday Ahunyana. Also, is there really a chance of Tua-Arreola happening in the fall?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

ESPN and Arreola's team are still working out possible opponents. The names I heard in the mix were Friday, Lance Whitaker and Derric Rossy, but as far as I know there is no deal for any of them yet. As for Tua-Arreola I very much doubt we will see that in the fall, but it would be fun.

Todd (Florence, SC)

Hey Dan - Any chance the Williams side wises up and realizes that no one of any consequence is going to fight him at 147 and takes the biggest fight available to him, a rematch with Martinez for the middleweight championship? If not, do they have any names at 147 they are working on?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

I would have no problem at all with Williams at 147 if that is where he wants to go and there were interesting fight for him. The reality is there are no interesting fights for him there. He's not going to get Pacquiao or Mayweather. Shane is going to 154 and fighting Mora and I have no interest in a Berto fight, which Berto's people would never make anyway. So who's he going to fight? Stay at 160 or go to 154 where there are attractive fights.

David (Corning)

Why on earth would would golden boy schedule Mora against Mosley shame on them for hurting the fight fans.

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

I don't see how it hurts fans. You have the option of buying it or not. Nobody will make you buy a ticket or the PPV. Golden Boy made a decision to match them and the fighters accepted. I wish them good luck with the show even if it is not something I am overly excited about. But it doesn't "hurt" fans. Jeez.

Bobby (Louisville)

Hey Dan, is the July 31 HBO Pay-per-view the best you've ever seen (on paper)?? from top to bottom

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

No, but the best I've seen in a few years for sure.

Bobby (Louisville)

Hey Dan! Do you have any interest at all in Margarito-Cintron III? Looks like it's been discussed. I think both guys should move on other directions personally.

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

I have no interest.

Chris (Newark, NJ)

Why is Chad Dawson not gettin the promoting and exposure necessary to make him the star he deserves to be. As long as he stays away from Andre Ward, he'll remain undefeated.

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

What planet exactly are you on? You make no sense.

tom (sacramento)

notebook coming today?

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

No, a bit of a slow week. There is a lengthy interview with Ross Greenburg that has a lot of good stuff in it, so I encourage you to check it out.

Reid (Mich)

Danomite, great article on Ross Greenburg. Based on his comments it doesn't seem like Maidana is going to get much exposure on the network no?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Thanks. I think we will most definitely see Maidana on HBO. It is clear HBO is in the 140-pound division and Ross mentioned him specifically along with a few other guys that HBO wants to air.

Aaron (MA)

any chance that Bika/Mendy will air on the PPV on July 31?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

No, that is not in the plans.

James (Myrtle Beach, SC)

Which one was/is worse? The heavyweight division between Holmes and Tyson or the current one?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

This one.

Jose Suleiman (Mexico)

To kick off the chat, I would like to announce that we are promoting New York City from "The Big Apple" to "The Super Big Apple". Hartford is the new regular Big Apple. Nashville is the mandatory.

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

LOL!

Joakim (IL)

Dan, where do Pac-PBF negotiations stand as far as you are concerned? Lotta other major media outlets are reporting on "agreements waiting on PBF's signature" but you have remained silent. What's up with the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

I have not written because I am told that despite Arum's talk that all the points are agreed to and they are awaiting Floyd's approval only that in fact all points are not agreed to. When the deal is actually done (or not done) rest assured I will write.

Cole (Maryland)

Why is everyone sleeping on Bernabe Concepcion? he hits hard and Juanma has a questionable chin.

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

I think because even though Bernabe can bang, he's very one dimensional and most believe Lopez has the superior talent.

Vinnie (Newark, NJ)

Dan, any idea if there will be a broadcast partner for the Adamek ? Grant fight? If this fight were in Europe I could at least watch it on the net.

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

At this point, I am told by Main Events that it could be a ppv (TV or net) and probably will wind up eventually on a delayed basis on SNY in New York.

Raul (whittier, CA)

Who would pay to watch Mora fight? Give me a break!

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Some will. More won't.

Tom E (Jersey City, NJ)

Since it's a slow week can you finally get around to answering the question that dude asked a couple of weeks ago about the size of Valuev's poops?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

These are my readers.

Marc (Malden, MA)

Since Pacquiao's camp is already talking plan B, it can't be too early to ask who we should blame if there isn't a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

We'll see about that if and when the fight doesn't get made.

Jerry (Buffalo, NY)

Boxing fans used to complain that there were too many big fights on PPV. Now they complain that there aren?t enough big fights period.

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

Boxing fans are NEVER satisfied. Ever. It's sad.

Lincoln (San Jose)

Dan, let me get this straight: you prefer the fake stuff (pro wrestling) over the real stuff (MMA), and you prefer deadly dull MLB over the greatest American sport ? the NFL? Is that about right?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

I'd also prefer to ban you.

G$ (Bay Area)

So in two weeks in September, Showtime might have two great double headers? Wlad-Povetkin & JuanMa vs Marquez then Kessler-Green

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

Correct with Ward-Dirrell on the same date as Kessler-Green.

Corey (Petersburg, WV)

Would you say, in terms of magnitude and unexpected dominance, that Martinez over Pavlik has been upset of the year, thus far?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

I don't think it was that big of an upset, so I don't agree.

Jose Suleiman (WBC Board of Governors Meeting)

From now on, the monkey is the King of the Jungle. The lion is the King of the Jungle emeritus.

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

Legendary.

Bob (Huntington, VA)

Once again, another summer weekend and another big MMA weekend and another lackluster boxing weekend.

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

So go enjoy the MMA.

Mario (Houston)

Dan, what do you think about the Donaire-Marquez fight? I think it should be good and Marquez has a good chance of pulling it off.

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

To me it's just another fight with Donaire facing a C-level guy.

Roman (Atlanta)

Dan, I was impressed with Brad Solomon a few weeks back on FNF. What are your thoughts on his potential? Any word/idea what might be next for him?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

I was also impressed. He so easily beat Galarza, who I thought was a very good prospect. Brad is slick and can box. He's a two-time national Golden Gloves champion as an amateur, so he has pedigree. Not sure what's next, but he's a prospect.

robb (north andover, ma)

what's the word on the love child? still mulling over his future after angulo?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. He's supposed to be back on the Adamek-Grant undercard in August in New Jersey. Main Events tells me he is going to try to come down to welterweight so this fight might be at about 152 pounds.

Joe (RI)

Maybe I'm nuts, but Mosleys old, and Mora naturally the bigger man. I could actually see Mora winning that fight and Mosley retiring afterwards. Keep in mind that I shant be watching this borefest regardless

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

I certainly give Mora a chance to win.

Mario (Houston)

Any news on Sergio Martinez's next move?

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

His promoter, Lou DiBella, is talking to HBO, which wants only the Williams rematch. Martinez/DiBella are willing to make if they have no other choice, but right now Williams and his team don't want to make it. So if that is the case, I don't see why HBO should punish Martinez when he is willing to fight Williams and just about anybody else. I'd like to see him face any nunber of guys if Williams won't fight him.

brian (scottsdale, az)

I was looking at a box of jello and among the ingredients was Spine of David Hays'

Matt (Spokane, WA)

There are only thirty signators to my Dan Rafael for HBO Commentator petition-- c'mon Freak Nation-- we're better than this!! http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/dan-rafael-for-commentator

lenny (Nj)

When is Kendall holt fighting again?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

No idea. He was supposed to fight on the Ward-Green card and pulled out because of his weight, from what promoter Lou DiBella told me.

Jose Sulaiman (WBC)

Insert horrible corny WBC joke here.

Alexandre (Montreal)

Dan, any chance the Bute - Brinkley fight ends up on Showtime if HBO passes on it ? Bute needs all the exposure he can get if he wants to be a star in the USA ...

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

HBO has said it is unlikely to air that fight. Since Showtime dissed Bute for the Super Six I would doubt they'll go back and buy this fight.

Milton (Raleigh, NC)

Has Tarver lost his marbles or am I being short sighted in thinking he can be a legitimate heavyweight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Tarver wants to give it a try. Good luck to him.

Tito (Nj)

Does Golden Boy have any plans for Vivian Harris?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

It's possible he will fight Victor Ortiz on the Mosley-Mora undercard in September.

Matt (Southington, CT )

Happy Fourth Dan. I saw a commerical on CNBC for the Marquez/Diaz fight...can't wait!

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Nice. I am looking forward to that fight and the whole card.

Bobby (Louisville)

Hey Dan! GREAT article on Ross Greenburg today. I applaud him for not televising both Klitchsco brothers vs. Euro-bums! Do you support HBO's decision to freeze out the Klit. brothers?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

I don't view it as HBO freezing them out. They are making a decision based on the possible fights and whether or not they want to invest huge sums of money for little bang for the buck. Ross understands their economics of fights they do in Germany and it simply is what it is -- there is no real market for them here and it's not worth HBO's time or money in his opinion to keep going to Europe with so few interesting opponents. Now if Haye would fight either brother or even Adamek, I believe HBO would be interested.

Ochs (Webster, NY)

Dan, didn't some of the Klitchscho fights actually pull decent numbers on HBO?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

Yes, when they fought here. Problem is there are almost no fights for them to do here that make any sense and they make more in Europe. How can you compare Vitali drawing 15,000 (if that) to Staples Center to him drawing 60,000-plus in a German soccer stadium? Plus if he fights here, the rights fees German TV network RTL are lower because the fight is on the middle of the night there.

marqus (ypsilanti)

any truth to the dela hoya trinidad fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

You clearly do not understand a joke when you read one in my blog.

Bert (Minneapolis)

Great interview w/ Greenburg. Arguably the most powerful man in boxing! I love to see his bluntness in the heavy's being weak, Mosely-Mora being a sham, etc. Sounds like he wants Cotto on HBO, will his next fight certainly be on HBO PPV?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

Thanks. I think you read it wrong -- he is certainly understanding that a Cotto-Margarito rematch would be a PPV event, just like the first fight was.

robb (north andover, ma)

the love child at welterweight is intriguing. think he could do any damage there? he's still only 25 so he could reinvent himself there

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

I think it's possible. Depends on how serious and motivated he is to do it.

G$ (Bay Area)

Any word from Schaefer on improving the quality of Solo Boxeo or Fight Night Club? Out here in the west coast, Solo Boxeo isnt on until midnight!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Solo Boxeo will go back to its 11:30 timeslot following the World Cup from Richard told me. I asked him about that the other day.

JASON (SF)

Will Brother Nazim be training Shane again?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

I have not heard anything to the contrary.

Jeremy (Jacksonville, FL)

Is it just me Dan or did we see a little of the old Cotto with Manny Stewart in his corner? I haven't seen the left hook to the body in years and he seemed to look the best I have seen him since the "loss" to Margarito

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

It wasn't just you.

Tito (nj)

Who would Harris fight on the mosley undercard?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Possibly Victor Ortiz.

Charlie (Winston Salem)

Do you think HBO would buy the Klitschko fights if they were held in the States?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Depends on the opponent.

David (Houston)

Why would Williams vs Berto not interest you?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

I consider Williams a middleweight, or at least a big junior middleweight, and not a welterweight. Berto is a small welterweight. The fight does not interest me. Plus, I don't think they would consider making it since Al Haymon manages both guys.

Kevin (Boston)

Hey Dan, I read somewhere that the Kim/Vasquez fight is going to be on FSN? Is this true because that would be great.

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

Yes, it will be on Top Rank Live in the US and on Televisa in Mexico. That was just announced.

Jonathan (Atlanta)

Brazil just got knocked out the world cup by Holland, will they still get an Emeritus Silver Cup?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

Sure why not?

Jeff (Las Vegas)

Will Dzrunick have trouble getting meaningful fights? His jab is awesome

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

He will have more trouble than the trouble you have spelling his name.

Ali MacDonald (Glasgow,Scotland)

Any news on a BAD replacement ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

How many times do I have to say this? At least for the rest of this year THERE ISN'T GOING TO BE A REPLACEMENT.

Milton (Raleigh, NC)

I read that Cotto struck a promotions deal with Golden Boy to promote Puerto Rican fighters. Is that true and if so, isn't that strange considering he's on Top Rank?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

Not strange at all. GB is going to do regular shows on Telefutura from Puerto Rico and made a deal with his company to work on them together. Since Top Rank isn't doing many shows in PR anymore it made sense for both Cotto's company and GB.

Jeremy (Jacksonville, FL)

I think Berto v. Cotto would be a pretty good fight. Berto reminds me a lot of Cotto in the way he fights. What do you think?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

As I have written, I would love to see that fight.

Stacy (South Carolina)

I love Mosley but him wanting to fight Mora is just another way to beat the guy (Mora) who beat the guy (Vernon Forrest) that beat him, ala Shane's fight with Mayorga.

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

I don't think that is the reason for the fight, but it at least makes a mildly interesting storyline. Of course, Vernon beat Mora pretty easily in their rematch.

Bill (Atlanta)

FYI: Marquez/Diaz 2 announced in theaters. Price should be $12.50/person. http://www.fathomevents.com/sports/event/marquez_vs_diaz.aspx

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

Yup, GB announced that yesterday.

Mikey (Levittown, NY)

Dan, great article about HBO. From it though, it seems like they have nothing planned or no room for anything on non-PPV HBO from September to the end of the year except the Gamboa card and Williams-Martinez II (if it happens). Am I missing something?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Yeah, you're missing a lot. They have fights that are simply not scheduled yet. There will likely be an Amir Khan fight Dec. 11, for example, which I mentioned. We didn't cover every single date for the rest of the year.

Anthony (Sacramento)

Dan have you heard anything about Froch-Abraham? I noticed it was no longer on the schedule.

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

The fight is scheduled for the fall, probably early October, but there is no set date at the moment.

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

I know the fight isn't very interesting to most of us, but are people really blind to the fact that even though it pretty much sucks, it has a really good chance of doing a pretty big gate in LA?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

I don't see it doing a big gate. People will turn out but I don't see it doing huge business.

Big Mickey (Chicago)

Rewatched Marquez-Diaz 1 last night, once Marquez got him timed Diaz had no chance. Do you think Diaz has it in him to adapt his style enough to throw Marquez off? He couldn't do it against Malinaggi, and Marquez is a much better fighter.

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

That is obviously the big question. I don't think Marquez is as good now as he was then after the whupping he took from Mayweather and the fact that he's a year older. So we'll see.

Kenneth (Toronto, ON)

Hello Danimal, Any Pavlik news? He seems to be on the outs with HBO. That's sad. Can he resurrect his career with a big win, or two? Thanks,

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

He's not on the outs with HBO. He fought in April, was cut severely and is taking some time off.

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

Dan, say the unfortunate, and highly likely, situation arises that Floyd and Manny don't agree to terms on this fight. We've heard all about who Manny may fight instead, but who would be Floyd's options?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

I have no idea. Honestly. If he doesn't take the Pacquiao fight he should retire again and stay there.

Jonathan (Atlanta)

What happened to Khan fighting in the U.K sometime this summer?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

He changed his mind and won't fight until December. He will be off for Ramadan and then come back Dec. 11.

Chop Chop (Las Vegas, NV)

Dan, put this in order for me please -- the Bobfather gets along best with: (1) Shaw (2) Goossen (3) Schaefer

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

I love them all and they all love me.

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

Marquez-Diaz in theaters is sweet. I really was wondering how to get away without paying the whole $50 for it. Being as I don't drink, I won't even be upset about the lack of alcohol at the theaters.

Don (Miami)

Dan in the article with Ross Greenburg it mentioned that Gamboa is going to unify with Elio Rojas. I thought he was going to fight orlando salido in september?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Change of plans.

Bert (Minneapolis)

Tell Mr. Greenburg, if he gets Maidina, Khan, Alexander, and Bradley next year in a little tourney, he will be promoted to your VP of Freakdom.

Josh (Lincoln, NE)

Haiku: David Haye talks crap/Wlad says "let's do this p---y"/Haye runs like scared girl

Chop Chop (Las Vegas, NV)

Haha D-Nice I know YOU love them (and they love YOU), but my question was about their relation to Arum (seems like he doesn't jibe with any of those 3)

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

I love them all and they love me.

Peter (Philadelphia)

I'm assuming no news is good news as far as Pascal's shoulder? I think that fight with Dawson is going to be good, especially since it's in Montreal. Any chance you're going to be checking that one in person?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

I'm hoping to. I think it's an excellent match and the best fight in the 175-pound division you can make right now.

Eric P (Saratoga Springs, NY)

DTM,I think I read that Curtis Stevens-Donovan George will be on FNF on July 30. Any word on where that fight will be?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

Probably Miami, Okalahoma. Delvin Rodriguez also on the card on July 30.

Ali MacDonald (Glasgow,Scotland)

Lucian Bute vs Chad Dawson for early 2011 ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

Bring it on.

Don (Miami)

Will Celestino Caballero ever get a chance at the top guys at 126?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

Not if they keep ducking him.

Omer Cheema (Washington DC)

If you were forced to make a decision, what is the fight of the year so far. I cant even think of any overwhelming fights.

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

It's been very weak so far although there are a few, such as Escalante-Roman from ESPN2 and Kessler-Froch from Showtime.

Rico (Texas)

Dan, shame on you. I am positively hooked to the Universum fights channel on youtube. Great quality and some pretty exciting fights!

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Why shame on me? You should be thanking me Freak.

Chop Chop (Las Vegas, NV)

Some things just don't change / The green belt is meaningless / And Bing is still dumb

Jay (Philadelphia)

1 week Til Mike Jones is unleashed on America. Buy or sell he and Berto get it on September?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Sell.

Rich (Brooklyn)

Dan, do you buy Bob Arum's statement that he has indeed sent the final proposal to the Mayweather camp?

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

I take everything Bob says with a grain of salt. I think he's trying to put the pressure on the Mayweather camp.

Keith H (Seattle)

Happy 4th of July to you and Mrs. DTM. What's on the grill agenda for the weekend? Burgers, Steaks or Ribs?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

I'm going to see the Nationals-Mets game tomorrow in DC to see Strasburg pitch. That is the focus of the weekend agenda!

BJ (LA)

Dan, is the Peterson-Rios fight still on?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

It's not signed, but that is supposed to be Sept. 11 on HBO on the undercard.

Chop Chop (Las Vegas, NV)

Robby DAN-o, have you seen the billboards near Newark advertising Judah-Santa Cruz?? There's 2 of 'em!! Props to Main Events. That's old school promoting (or at least just different)

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

I haven't seen them since I don't live anywhere near there. But Main Events knows that market well and what works.

Mrs. DTM (at work)

In case Abdul is reading -- it was nice to meet a freak!

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

I met a real life Freak while shopping with my wife at Costco last Saturday.

Joe (Nebraska)

Dan, if you could invite one boxing promoter over for a 4th of July cookout, who would it be?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Why would I invite a promoter over on July 4?

Shawn (Tempe)

Good call, Dan, Strasburg is filthy!

John H (Augusta GA)

Dan , love the story on Ross and its great to see the business from his eyes. One tricky question though , he mentioned Cotto/Margacheato 2 for December 4th on PPV , isn't that very soon for another PPV if Pac-May is made for Nov 13th?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

He never mentioned a date for Cotto-Margarito. Dec. 4 has been discussed, but it's a fluid situation. Pacquiao-Mayweather is the most important thing. After that is made (or not) everything else will be scheduled around that.

Romeo (DC)

Do you think Arum's strategy is working? Many media outlets seem to write that Mayweather is holding up the fight

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Because that's what Bob wants to put out there, whether it's true or not.

Rich (Chicago)

Is there a catchweight for Linares/Juarez, saw on the ESPN schedule the 7/31 fight is at Lightweight? Both of these guys can do feather/Jr Light, but I can't see either fighting Katsidis, Guerrero, Funeka, or Soto.

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

I wrote it before when I wrote that the fight was made a coule of weeks ago. I believe the weight is 133, which for the purposes of being technical on the schedule, makes it a lightweight fight.

Justin (Springfield, NJ)

Dan: Given the absence of another HBO quality 147lb opponent, is it time for Berto-Collazo II?

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

I could see it, but Collazo has done himself no favors by not fighting for a year, which is why I've dropped him from the rankings.

Chris (Newark, NJ)

Who is P4P best in your opinion, Pacman or Pretty Boy Floyd?

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

Maybe you ought to click on the p4p rankings I do every single month. What a novel idea.

Jonathan (Atlanta)

Costco rocks!

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

This we know.

Paul (Montreal)

Bute vs Dawson? How about Bute vs Pascal!!! Two fighters from Montreal, fighting at home. A monster fight

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

Of Pascal beats Dawson, Pascal-Bute is a monster in Montreal.

Rudy (Chi)

What do u think of Barrera/Soto?

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

I've seen worse. In Mexico, it'll be a big deal.

G$ (Bay Area)

Mares vs Perez belongs in the discussion of FOTY so far, only those 3 really stand out

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

It would be on the list at this point, but not the winner in my mind.

Romeo (DC)

Do you think the WBC will start splitting the existing divisions to create light junior welterweight (138 lbs) so they can have more champions and more sanctioning fees?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

You're sick, but maybe Jose is reading. I would put nothing past him for the sake of a buck.

Martin (Iraq)

Dan, Love the chats I always catch the chats friday night here in Iraq, I would like to know two things whats up with Lamont Peterson, seems as though he disapeared after the beatdown from Bradley and why hasnt Cory Spinks been stripped of his title yet its shameful what he has done.

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Stay safe over there. Lamont may fight on Top Rank Live late in the summer or early fall, but nothing is specifically scheduled for him at this time. I am not sure why Spinks hasn't been stripped. He is massively overdue for his mandatory and the IBF doesn't usually mess around.

Rob (OH)

Dan, I apologize for bringing it up - but is this rumored Holyfield-Tyson fight for real? Tell me it's not.

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Gibberish.

Chop Chop (Las Vegas, NV)

Does Ross read the Freak chats? Doing so could go a LONG WAY to helping him read the pulse of the fight fans...

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

I would imagine he checks in on them some of the time, yes.

Bert (Minneapolis)

Any chance Berto can move to 154? Seems he'd have Martinez, Cotto, or Williams ready to go! Oh wait... He's ducking them...

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

There is no need for Berto to go to 154. He's a small welter to begin with. He's not ducking those guys.

James (Myrtle Beach, SC)

Recently read an article where holyfield said he could beat a Klitschko right now. Obviously he is demented BUT am i the only one that thinks this fight should happen for the simple fact that MAYBE after, Holy will get a clue and retire???

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

Why any "journalist" would even write such ridiculous comments from Holyfield is beyond me. Must have been a very, very slow news day.

Shawn (Tempe)

Even better, a super light junior welterweight division at 139.

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

I think you're on to something. I think maybe the WBC and the WBA could create divisions for every single pound. You could have the champ at 152 pounds move up to win the title at 153 pounds and then make the leap to 154 and then maybe even 155 and become a four-division champion!

John (San Fran)

Dan, do you think Bob is trying to ruin the mega-fight by taking it to the press? Maybe he just wants Manny to keep the money "in-house" against another Top Rank fighter

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

The thought has crossed my mind, yes.

Peter (Poland)

Do you think Pawel Wolak will ever fight for a title?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Doubtful.

Shower Door (Vegas)

David Haye is ducking me.

Bert (Minneapolis)

Honestly-I think there are an excessive number of divisions to begin w/. But if one is added, it would have to Super Heavy, no?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

No, it would have to be the mini junior super bantamweight at 120.

Slayer (NY)

I think JuanMa/Maruez is a total mismatch, Maquez is to old and is going to get hurt. Your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

I think Juanma beats Marquez, but Marquez can bang and has skill and has heart. I think it's a big PR vs. Mexico fight and will be an attraction fight and a good fight. I have no issue with it. Young studs making their name against respected, older former champions has been a recipe in boxing for centuries.

Raul (whittier, CA)

Nothing like drinking vodka and talking boxing on a friday morning

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

Note: ESPN does not condone the use of alcohol at such an early morning hour.

Mike (Homer Glen, IL)

Hey DTM, who do you like tonight? Hopkins or Arnaoutis?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Hopkins. One thing I don't get is why on earth TKO Boxing would put a fight between Hopkins (Philly) and Arnaoutis (Jersey) in SoCal at a massive arena. Guaranteed they get slaughtered on the show and lose a ton of money. It makes no sense. Nobody in that area gives a damn about either guy.

Sean (UK)

Dan, excited for the bumper Frank Warren card in September? I rate it far higher than a mere domestic card - there's a string of guys on the verge of a world title challenge there.

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

It is a tremendous show.

Ali (Tampa)

I know you're against Manny keeping the Ring 140 lb belt, but considering the Michael Phelps-like diet he's on, just to maintain the unnatural welterweight range, shouldn't he consider going back to the talent-rich 140 lb division, if the FMJ fight falls apart?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

He's never going to fight again at 140 and you can take it to the bank.

JASON (SF)

Dan, I know you are an avid trade rof boxing DVD's. Where can I go to start trading? I'm a newbie. Thanks.

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Try posting on message boards.

John (Phoenix)

Segura have an opponent yet? Thanks Dan0

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

Not yet.

Jose Suleiman (Cony Island)

I am proud to announce that along with the typical Yellow Mustard Belt, we are also sanctioning the WBC Green Relish Belt at the Nathans hot dog eating competition this weekend!

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Rob (England)

I grew up with David Haye. We attended the same preschool. We always hated playing "duck duck goose" with him, because he would just walk around in circles, tapping heads and saying "duck" every time. He never got to the "goose part".

Omar Saleh (London, England)

Dan, Should Naseem Hamed be inducted into the Hall Of Fame

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

I voted for him.

Charles (DFW)

What kept the Mosley Berto fight from being put back together? I have a hard time thinking it was Mosley's side.

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

Berto's side insisted on a 50-50 deal and was offered 60-40. If he had taken 60-40 it would have been basically a paycut from the Quintana fight, which HBO radically overpaid for. And now HBO is paying the price. How can you get the guy back in the ring to fight Mosley for less than he got against Quintana? Had HBO not been overpaying Berto for so long it could have gotten it done. So in the large view, HBO caused the problem and now it isn't getting the fight it wants and has nobody to blame but itself.

frank (NY)

Dan why is Zab still in your top 10 at welterweight? He hasnt won a fight against a significant opponent in 5 years

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

First off, that is not correct. But who do you think should be there instead? Once you get past the top few guys, 147 has actually thinned out.

JJD (Seattle)

They could make weight classes at every pound and Joan Guzman still wouldn't be able to make weight.

Jeff (Dearborn, MI)

Are you the anonymous Raw GM?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

Unfortunately, no.

Mario (Houston)

Dan whos the best prospect out of houston. Marcus Johnson, Lanrd Lane, Hylon WIlliams, or Omar Henry?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

At this point, I would say Johnson.

Charles (DFW)

From now on Jose Sulaiman is the root of all evil. Money is the root of all evil emeritus in recess.

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

Brilliant.

Julio (DFW)

What is the word on the Cintron/Williams rematch? Is Goosen still actually trying to find a 147 fight for Williams?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

There is no rematch.

James (Newark, Ny)

Bigger weapon; Pac's left, Floyd's right?

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

Manny's left because Manny is a better puncher.

Lazer (Brooklyn. NY)

Hey Dan considering how monumentally slow this week is for boxing, will you buy the biggest fight in MMA history - Lesnar Carwin?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

No. I have no interest.

Graham (NYC)

No offense Dan but people are curious, what is your beef with James Toney?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

I have no beef with James and never have, so I have no idea what you are talking about.

Pavel (Krakow, Poland)

It?s one thing for David Haye to avoid the Klitschkos, but fighting Audley Harrison? He could at least fight worthier opponents like Tomas Adamek, Ruslan Chagaev or Tony Thompson.

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

For what it's worth in the UK a fight with Audley is a pretty big deal. The rest of the world couldn't care less.

Kelby (Omaha)

Yo Dan, I'm sour against Haye just as much as anyone...but i was thinking...he probably makes more money with Heavyweight fights. If he fights the Klits, hes gonna get KO'd and will have no more big money fights. Im thinking his people realized this and are looking to make a few more bucks before the Klits put him to sleep...This is a business.

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

You are right and I have no issue with that tact. HOWEVER -- HOWEVER -- when you talk the crap he's talked and then run like a baby then I take issue with it. Even Lennox Lewis takes issue with it! (See the quotable in last week's notebook). If he doesn't want to fight a Klitschko, fine. So be it. But if you are going to talk sooooo over the top about them on and on and on and then sign to fight one of them and bail at the last minute and then agree to fight another and bail again and then reject the offer you said you wanted (50-50, no options) when offered a fight again, it's hard to respect that.

Milton (Raleigh, NC)

Dan the Man, great article about HBO and the recap of the year so far. Is Caballero a victim of bad promotion, scared opposition, or a combination of the two? He looks like a monster and should be able to get fights easily in my mind.

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

Caballero is one of those guys who is a handful for anyone to fight and brings no real money to the table. He is in a tough spot. Unless he's mandatory who wants to deal with him? And without HBO backing him or Showtime stepping up, it's hard to get him into a meaningful fight since he can't sell a ticket.

James (SD)

Your views and commentary are laughable at best! You have to be one of the most bias writers out there... I continually see yourself contradicting yourself then back tracking anytime someone calls you out. Have some huevos Rafael and man up!

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

Blah blah blah. Go play with fireworks.

Isaac (New York)

Dan, as excited as I was when Showtime announced the super middleweight tournament, I have to say that my excitement has waned because of how stretched out it has been. I have to agree with Mr. Greenburg - quicker, single elimination tournaments work much better in practice. What do you think?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

I like both kinds of tourneys. I would like to see Showtime's move a little faster, but overall I still like it a lot.

robb (north andover, ma)

thanks for the big tip about universum on youtube. i don't know most of those fighters/fights, got any good suggestions?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

Check out some Dariusz Michalczewski or some of the active guys like Tajbert or Brahmer.

Billy (Pittsburgh)

Shame on HBO for not picking up Klitschko versus Povetkin when their schedule has been woeful so far this year, and they aren?t getting Mosley-Berto and probably not Sergio-P Williams II.

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

Before you make that statement you should wait to see what HBO does wind up with.

Dave (San Jose)

Dan are these people stupid or what? This is a boxing chat. You have nothing against MMA but no interest in it. Why do people keep asking you about it? It's like they want you to like it.

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

I have no idea. I just think some people are literally morons.

Jarrod (Santa Fe)

Dan, it sounds like Ross Greenburg and HBO is now more interested in making great fights than just featuring great stars in mismatches. To me, this is a positive step.

Iron Mike (Oakland, Ca)

Hey Danimal how do you feel about a Julio Chavez jr vs Saul Alvarez fight on the horizon? Can it be intriguing and plausible to you?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Alvarez has called him out. Would be big in Mexico. But probably hard to make since Chavez is with TR and Alvarez is now with GB. It would definitely be a good fight.

brian (scottsdale, az)

Freaks have mentioned in the past about you starting a twitter account to break boxing news. I'd set up an account and follow you, but I would also want other important news like what you are having for breakfast, when you mow the lawn, the real important stuff..

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

I'll consider it.

Bobby (Louisville)

Hey Dan! any real reason Hopkins/Bute hasn't come to fruition? and Bute going ahead with a non-televised crap fight vs. Jesse Brinkley!

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

Nobody wants to see it or cares about it. And Bute has a mandatory this fall anyway.

Charles (DFW)

Chavez-Alvarez is one of those fights that probably won't happen for 5-10 years, until both guys become superstars and titlists. The money would be ridiculous.

chris (oklahoma city)

Happy 4th of July to the freaks. I put a nice lake, good food and sea-doo's on hold to participate in the chat. If you only knew dan, that was a freak move

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

We're happy to have you.

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

Dan, I don't disagree that there aren't much better choices at welter, but how can you say that he has fought anyone that mattered in the last five years? Cosme Rivera and Edwin Vazquez are the two best fighters he's beaten since Cory Spinks in 05.

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

There aren't better choices and that is all that matters.

Daniel (SF)

I'm strongly considering going to Vegas for the Marquez-Lopez fight. If Showtime picks up the Klitschko-Povetkin fight, would they show it on the arena jumbotron?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

I would think so. I know when I was in Vegas to cover Dawson-Tarver 1, Showtime also had Vitali-Sam Peter on delay on the broadcast. If you were in the arena, they had a full undercard and then a break in the live action to show the Klitschko fight on the screen in the arena before the main event. It was pretty cool. Can't say if that would be the case again though if they bought Klitschko-Povetkin.

Charles (DFW)

It's hard to argue with Greenburg on the heavyweights. Like Bert Sugar said, the best heavyweights in America right now are Ray Lewis and Brian Urlacher (and I'll throw in Patrick Willis)

marqus (ypsilanti)

any word on who clottey is considering next?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

No idea. It's like he's in popular demand after the wretched showing with Pacquiao.

Chris (Tempe)

Dan, does Top Rank plan to air any replays of the Chavez-Duddy fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

No.

brian (scottsdale, az)

ward-direll, I remember you stating that Vegas was considered as a location for that fight, any more word this?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Nothing new yet.

darryl p (indianapoils)

any news on yuri foreman?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

He's recovering from knee surgery. That's about it.

mike (costa rica)

dan, everbody seems to forget that saul alvarez was about 5 seconds from being stop in his last fight

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

I haven't forgotten that at all.

Matt (KC)

Crytal ball prediction. Cotto gets his revenge or Margorito and gets a big pay day against De La Hoya, after De La Hoya makes his comeback against tomato can. Buy or sell?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Lotta time on your hands eh?

John (Phoenix)

I know that I am very critical of your work often on here, but I wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed you piece about HBO. Good stuff Dan. Anyways, JMM KO5. Ugly this time.

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Thanks. I want you to know that I am also very critical of you.

brian (scottsdale, az)

I see Chris Avalos has a TBA for his august 6 fight? Any word on possible opponets?

Dave (San Jose)

Also, do you like it when people put words in your mouth? Like you hate James Toney, and accuse you of being biased but can't name anything you're biased about? The stupidity of 99% of people is truly amazing.

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

I'm used to it.

Steve (NYC)

Couldn't Bute move up his crap fight quicker? He is wasting his year with junk.

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

No, because that's when it is scheduled based on television and the arena.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga)

HAIKU TIME!!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

Bring it Freak.

Arod (NYC)

Dan work sucks, thanks for making today barable

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

Any time.

Paul (SD)

Edwin Valero for Hall of Fame?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

You are an idiot.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga)

BTW My David Haye bobblehead bobbles alot but when I stick it next to a Klitchsko bobblehead he stops bobbling! (Haiku to come!)

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

Ahh, the old bobblehead jokes. They are like Juan Manuel Marquez and Shower Door jokes -- they never get old.

Steve (Hartford)

Im actually very tired of WBC and Shower Door jokes, you shouldn't post them any longer.

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

You know what? You're from Hartford so your opinion means nothing.

Jimmy (Arlington, VA)

Who do you think Berto will fight next?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

I have no idea actually. I could see DiBella trying to make Berto-Cintron at 147. But I really don't know.

Charles (DFW)

Yeah, didn't someone say Hartford was the interim big Apple? Hartford should be the Crab Apple. Full champion, no interim needed.

Kolbe (Lancaster)

Bing! jokes never get old too..

Charles (DFW)

Maybe DiBella should make Berto-Aydin, so Andre can shut him up. I think Aydin is overblown, especially after the Said Ouali fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Maybe so, but I doubt HBO would buy it. Maybe Showtime would. Aydin was on ShoBox once, so who knows? But I know one thing -- Berto will take a deep pay cut on Showtime.

Mike S. (San Antonio)

How hard is it for fighters of rival promoters to get on an undercard to a PPV or even just a match?

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

Usually the promoter putting on the main event uses his own guys on the undercard. If it's a co-promotion, both companies get slots on the undercard. Pretty simple.

Marissa (L.A.)

Today is Larry David's birthday! Wish him a Pretty-Pretty-Good Birthday everyone!

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

Nice.

Ty (Walnut, CA)

Mayweather Pac Man/Stop the Posturing and Fight/The World is Waiting

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

Nice one. And so true.

Omar (LA)

How about a Dan's favorites Haiku:Undertaker, Duke, /Yanks, Giants, Popo, Thunder, /and AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH, THE LOVE CHILD!!!!!!!

Anthony (Sacramento)

Dan how much did Berto make for the Quintania fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

$1.5 million.

Mike S. (San Antonio)

If Pac/ Floyd happens and with the amount of money that will be made by all, wouldn't it benefit boxing for all parties to forfeit atleast $2million for an excellent undercard. Imagine Pavlik/ Bute or they wouldnt want to be undercard fighters?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

It would, but they're all pigs, so it probably won't happen.

robb (north andover, ma)

re: berto's money for quintana. THAT IS ABSURD!!!!!! vazquez and marquez probably didn't make half of that between them for their third or fourth fights!! boxing frustrating.

Pete (NYC)

One, Two, Three, Get Back / To the corner Librado / Marlon Wright's 10-Count

Anthony (Sacramento)

Dan is Abner stepping into Sergios slot still on the 28th? And is his opponent (or a list of) yet determined?

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

Richard Schaefer told me maybe Abner Mares would take his place on the Telefutura, but nothing official and no opponents mentioned at this point.

Stacey (Blacksburg, VA.)

Help settle a bet please -- who is the hardest hitter south of Middleweight these days Dan?

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

There are a lot of good punchers below middleweight -- Angulo, Pacquiao, Maidana, Juanma, Gamboa, Darchinyan and Segura come to mind.

John (Phoenix)

Dan, I miss Randall Bailey.

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

And Randall Bailey is another excellent puncher below middleweight.

Thom (Holton, IN)

Dano, do you have any interest at all in Morales vs Spadefora?

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

My mouth couldn't open wide enough to get out the amount of yawn I would want to make.

Mike S. (San Antonio)

Is Cotto/ TR even considering a matchup with Angulo.

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

I dont think so. That is just Gary Shaw's dream.

Ty (Walnut, CA)

Dan, I thought Cotto said he would never fight Margarito again? Perhaps if the money is big enough...?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

I never actually heard him say that but even if he did, time and money have a way of changing one's mind.

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

OK Freaks, thanks for chatting today. Hope you read up on all that has been posted recently and enjoy the holiday weekend. We'll do it again next Friday. Peace.
