Chat with Kevin Seifert

Kevin Seifert
  (2:00 PM)

Hi everyone. This is our last chat for a few weeks, so let's make it a good one. Batter up!

Cody (ND)

Who will replace Donald Driver as the consistent number 2 receiver once he retires?? He is getting up there in age. Is the person who replaces him currently on the roster?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:01 PM)

Sounds like Jordy Nelson made a pretty good impression during OTAs/minicamp. He would be the logical guy. He was their top draft pick a few years ago.

Jeff (Mpls)

If you had to choose between Rice or Harvin getting injured and missing some time, which would you choose and why?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:02 PM)

I wouldn't root for anyone to get hurt. But it's my opinion that Rice was more valuable than Harvin last year. Harvin made some great plays, but Rice made more. And I can't think of anyone on the roster who could come close to replacing the production Rice had last year.

Kyle (Dubuque)

Just got my tickets to family night at Lambeau Field Aug. 7th...How about you?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:03 PM)

Not sure on my training camp itinerary yet. My debut there last year got rained out, so I don't know if that's a sign or not.

Amanda (Wisconsin)

I heard from a reliable source that Aaron Rodgers is dating Lady Antebellum. Confirmation/thoughts?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:04 PM)

Lady Antebellum? Is that Lady Gaga's older sister?

Sam (NY)

Kevin, I recently read on the Bears website that Tom Thayer said one of the guys who really looked impressive during OTA'S was none other than Tommie Harris? Can you believe this? This is this first offseason in three years he hasn't had to have surgery. I have heard reports Harris has been talking with Warren sapp. It all sounds very positive. What do you think? Does he return to being a factor on the field? The rest of the NFC North better hope not.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:06 PM)

Well, Tom would know. But I think he would also warn against reading too much into practices in shorts. The fact that Harris didn't have knee surgery is more of a reflection that there really isn't anything more the doctors can do for the knee. He has to learn to play with it the way it is. The further away we get from Harris' top years, the more I doubt he can return to his previous form.

AlbanyJim (Albany, NY)

Is there a training camp for NFL bloggers? What are the some of the drills you work on? Reps with the TV remote? The 2-minute chat drill? Do you work with a 14-lb. mouse -- to improve scrolling security? Do you work out free agent pizza delivery guys? Give us a window into the Seifert offseason!

Kevin Seifert
  (2:08 PM)

It starts with Nothing, continues with Not A Lot and concludes witzzzzzzzzz...

mschweik (falls church, va)

Question ... where's the historical evidence to support the angle that Favre's goal is to miss training camp this year? Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe he's only missed training camp once in his career ... (you can say twice if you count 2008 when he unretired and was traded to Jets, but I think he wanted to unretire late June 2008 and based on that timing he could have theoretically made camp) ... so if a guy makes camp 18 out of 19 years how does that constitute a trend ... there's no disputing the guy is a chronic retirement waffler based on past history, but it seems that the media is creating this training camp issue where there's little evidence to back it up ... I'll buy into that angle if he misses camp again this year to make it 2 years in a row, but before then I think it's a bogus storyline.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:09 PM)

Basically, the historic evidence is that he did it last year and it worked. The coach has said he's fine with it. What else is there to debate?

Peter Gibbons (My apartment)

Kevin, I can't believe what a bunch of nerds we are. We're looking up money laundering in a dictionary.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:09 PM)

Why don't you just go outside and pound the tar out of the fax machine?

Dan (Austin, TX)

I'm worried about the high expectations for the Packers this year. Tramon Williams at corner, receivers continuing to drop balls, old broken knees at the tackles, a rookie strong safety and questions at linebacker. How are my beloved Packers a Super Bowl contender?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:11 PM)

Well, when you put it that way.... Every team has weaker links. But look at the Packers' big-picture strong links: One of the game's best quarterbacks. A 1,200-yard runner. An elite receiver in Greg Jennings and a soon-to-be-elite tight end in Jermichael Finley. Reasonable backup plans for those aging tackles. A defense that finished last season ranked among the NFL's best.

Nabicus (Thorndale PA)

Kevin.... we keep hearing Westbrook-to-Minnesota rumors, if that's true.. is Gerhart the starting Fullback?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:12 PM)

No. They hardly use the fullback and I never have any idea why they pay Tahi $1 million-plus per year to do it. The last I heard, the Vikings had no interest in Westbrook.

Dan (Austin, TX)

Also, would the Pack give Adelius Thomas a look? Seems to fit the Charles Woodson mold for veteran free agents the team would sign.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:14 PM)

Woodson was one of the last big-time free agents the Packers have signed. I don't see them pursuing Thomas unless they get to camp and decide they don't have anyone who can start.

Pat (Chicago)

A guess as to what the bears starting o-line will look like?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:15 PM)

LT Chris Williams, LG Johan Asiata, C Olin Kreutz, RG Roberto Garza, RT Frank Omiyale.... Just taking an educated guess on Asiata based on Mike Tice's willingness to use young, untested offensive linemen in the past.

Adam (Wapello)

Do you see the Lions being successful running the ball this season or will third and long continue to happen on a regular basis?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:16 PM)

Jahvid Best should have a big impact, and with the potential deep passing game the Lions have, I would think there will be some good numbers to run the ball on.

Matt (PA)

I went to high school with Mickey Shuler Jr. at East Pennsboro. Any thoughts on him making the Vikings roster?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:16 PM)

I think they like him, but he's behind a few veterans who are pretty much locks to make the roster. If everyone stays healthy, Shuler will have to make it as a No. 4 tight end.

matt (ewing, nj)

Kevin, do you believe Aaron Rodgers will increase his TD totals and decrease his INT totals this season? He did so last year, but last year was impressive and will be hard to top. I think he can top it, though. Thoughts?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:17 PM)

I agree. Hard to have fewer than seven interceptions in a 16 game season. Touchdowns could conceivably go up, though.

John (Stamford, CT)

Hey Kev, great job covering the black and blue! What do you think of Chris Williams as a left tackle and do you ever see him as a pro bowl caliber player? Thanks

Kevin Seifert
  (2:19 PM)

Thanks, John. Everything I hear is that the Bears thought he was much, much better once he moved back to left tackle last season. I watched him a lot in the Monday night game against Minnesota, and I thought he did a heck of a job against Jared Allen. We'll see if he can do that over the course of a season, but he's got a shot.

Sean (Madison WI)

After bretts recent comments about wanting to extend his stats so he'll play another 2 seasons, will anyone finally realize that he is all about himself/?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:20 PM)

Didn't see that one. Where was that quote?

AJ (New York)

Kevin what do you think about Lito Sheppard?? I think he is going to bounce back bigtime with the vikings and be an impact player. You hearing any news from the vikings about how he looks and what their goals are for him?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:21 PM)

It sounds like he will be the guy to start in place of Griffin. But remember, most starting-caliber cornerbacks don't go for a one-year, $2 million deal. That should tell you what the Vikings and the rest of the league thinks of him.

USA track (Bleachers)

Who's the fastest player in the NFC north? Best? Harvin? Shields? Hester?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:22 PM)

Interesting one. I'll go with the theory that football players get slower every year based on the pounding they take. For that reason, I'll go with Best.

Chris (St. Paul, MN)

Packer question, but pertains to the NFL in general: Should a 1st round pick show flashes of dominance during camp (possibility w/Bulaga) do you give him a shot elsewhere along the offensive line? So, 5 most effective lineman starting or strictly develop some players for 1 position?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:24 PM)

Well, that's the theory that has gotten the Packers in trouble multiple times in recent years with their offensive line. There are all different ways to look at that, and I understand wanting the "best five" out there. But there's no question that continuity is a big issue on offensive lines as well. So if you make a starter the top backup at another position, you end up having to change two positions to fix one. That's what the Packers did last year with College moving to left tackle. An alternate way to handle it is to find a backup who can play multiple positions and multiple sides. When a starter gets hurt, that guy is the next man up at whatever position it is. So you have your best six guys and plug the sixth in wherever he needs to be.

Brando (Fargo)

Siefert, why is this the last chat? I didn't know you were like a school teacher and got your summers off!

Kevin Seifert
  (2:25 PM)

Brendo: Didn't say it was the whole summer. Just a few weeks.

Dave (WI)

Are you gonna go to the teams training camp when it comes?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:26 PM)

Yes. I'll make trips to all four camps between roughly July 30 and Aug. 20.

Jeff (Nashville)

I think the level of optimism for Packer fans depends on their level of trust McCarthy/Thompson. I feel good about their past decisions so I feel good about this season. Whats your feeling on those two, or how about a ranking of each team's braintrust?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:28 PM)

Interesting. I can't argue with the team they've built, other than the occasional complaint that they never EVER consider a veteran free agent anymore. Sometimes, they can actually help. But as far as braintrusts that build teams, I don't really count the coaches in that group. All four NFC North teams have independent general manager types. So my rankings in that regard would be: Spielman, Thompson, Mayhew, Angelo. ... I went with Spielman over Thompson because he has made some excellent free agent signings.

Colin (Milwaukee, WI)

Have you sent your list of demands to the Packers in case you have to go on camera again this year, like you did at last year's Family Night Scrimmage?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:29 PM)

Only one. Let me know if you're going to broadcast the interview in the locker room and on the concourse.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:29 PM)

Although I wouldn't take back anything I said that night.

John Cusak (Livin the Dream)

Hot Tub Time Machine released on DVD today Kevin. How many copies can I put you down for??

Kevin Seifert
  (2:30 PM)

I'm a little behind. Just watched Superbad the other night. Solid.

Bruce (Turlock, CA)

With the signing of Ryan Moats, the Vikings backfield is looking awfully crowded. You'd have to assume that AD and Gerhart would be 1 & 2, does this mean Darius Reynaud moves back to WR or is he on the roster bubble?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:31 PM)

No, I don't think so. They could keep four or even five running backs, and Moats isn't a lock to make the roster.

Jimbo (Indy)

Sources tell me that you went first in an ESPN NFL Blogger fantasy draft. Congrats!!!! How are you preparing for the season?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:31 PM)

My agent is handling all of that. I'm just going to try to do my best and contribute to the ballclub any way I can.

Sean (Madison WI)

in the st paul pioneer press supposedly....http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/view/199831-two-more-seasons-for-favreI dont know how much truth there is to that....but if that is true, do you have an issue with someone playing merely for stats?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:32 PM)

Oh, I didn't see that. I don't have an issue with it per se. If you're still good enough to accumulate those stats, you have every right to keep playing.

JD (Michigan)

I have read a few different articles that talked about Chris Harris not really showing alot in OTA's that impressed coaches, have you heard anything about that? I know he injured his ankle or "tweeked" it, but is this just one of those "wait till pads" deal where will see Harris back to form?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:34 PM)

Yeah, I think we all kind of thought the Bears were rock solid at one of the safety positions when they traded for Harris. None of us, including me, really questioned why Carolina would give him up for a career backup linebacker. Maybe Carolina had a decent idea about where Harris' career was going. I've heard some low-level concerns about his mobility, etc., this spring, but I'm not willing to make any big conclusions yet.

Bruce (Turlock, CA)

According to a 2008 SI article, the average salary for an NFL corner is just over 1M/yr. so I don't think 2M for a starter is too bad.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:35 PM)

Doesn't that include backups, special teams guys, etc.?

Mark (Wisconsin)

you do know shields was a world class sprinter...

Kevin Seifert
  (2:35 PM)

I do know that, yes... just have never seen him run to be honest.

Sam (NY)

Kevin...Fastest Guy might be Daiel Manning

Kevin Seifert
  (2:36 PM)

Danieal Manning gets to top speed as fast as anyone I've seen. Running down on kickoffs against him must be brutal.

Matt (Pa)

If you could have lunch with 1 player from any current NFC North roster... who would you pick and why?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:37 PM)

I'm guessing Pat Williams would know a good place to go.

Darth Favre (The Death Tractor)

Impressive. Most impressive. Obi-Wan has taught you well. You have controlled your fear. Now, release your anger. Only your hatred can destroy me.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:37 PM)

Wait until he finds out that this battle station is fully operational.

steve (ithaca)

what would be the rationale for Roger Goodell to go to the Packers annual meeting this year? Will you be there?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:40 PM)

The Packers' annual meeting is going to be a big deal in the upcoming CBA negotiations. They'll already have released their financial statement, but I'm guessing Goodell will be there to help explain to stockholders -- and the rest of the country -- why the Packers' profits presumably fell and why the rest of the league needs to reconcile its relationship with the union. There are also indications that DeMaurice Smith will be there as well. I'm not sure if I will be.

Sam (NY)

Kevin, I see Devin Hester is going to work with Isaac Bruce in July. Is this something worth keeping an eye on?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:41 PM)

Oh yeah. I would imagine Bruce will have some pointers for playing in a Mike Martz offense.

Bill Lumburgh (At your office)

Yeaaaaah, Kevin what's happening? I'm gonna need you to go ahead and keep chatting for the next few weeks. We've got some other bloggers going on vacation and we need to play catch up. Thanks a bunch.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:42 PM)

I just don't feel like it.

Ben (Lansing)

Why wasn't Calvin Johnson considered as one of the fastest? Is it because he's tall? He ran a 4.35 40 at the combine....

Kevin Seifert
  (2:44 PM)

Wasn't Best a 4.31? And his legs are two years fresher.

Al (Wausau, WI)

Kevin, some rumors exist that say JaMarcus Russell could be a possible backup QB for the Vikings. Do you feel this is possible, and if so, would Sage Rosenfels become expendable (if he's not expendable already)? Enjoy your time off!

Kevin Seifert
  (2:45 PM)

Thanks Al. I'm guessing Russell would like to come to Minnesota, given the skill position players he would have around him. He also wouldn't have to play this year. That's key. But I'm not aware of any interest from the Vikings.

Eric (Chicago)

Kevin, I have an idea...everyone knows you love the Vikings (living in MIN, working for the paper in MIN is a dead give-away), how about you move to Chicago...5 hours to Detroit, 3.5 hours to GB, 7.5 hours to MIN...this way you don't get the homerisms and you can easily get everywhere and not always stay in the best NFC North city. Like it?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:46 PM)

Well, Chicago does have a Dunkin' Donuts on every other street corner. That alone would be an improvement over Minnesota.

Mel Kiper Jr [via mobile]

I really don't understand picking Seifert that high. Tim Graham would've been a better choice. Graham is one of the best I've seen at chatting behind his pads. Seifert? That's a head scratcher...

Kevin Seifert
  (2:47 PM)

I am going to channel my best Vince Tobin...

Kevin Seifert
  (2:47 PM)

Wait, it was Bill Tobin, right?

JD (Michigan)

In your mind, who might be the odd man out at RB for the Bears?Khalil Bell? Wolfe? Wolfe is really good on Special teams tho.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:48 PM)

Wolfe never stays healthy, but it wouldn't be out of the question to keep Forte-Taylor-Bell-Wolfe. There won't be a fullback this year, I don't think.

Brando (Fargo)

Saw a great article over at NFL.com about the use of the spread offense in the pro game and it's ability to stop the blitz. Which team in the NFCN would be most likely to implement such a scheme?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:48 PM)

The interesting thing is everyone is incorporating it to some extent. Look how often quarterbacks are in the shotgun now...

Lucas (Detroit, MI)

Why do you hate the Lions? Of (by my count) the 25 team specific questions you have answered, there is only one about Detroit. What's the deal, Kev?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:49 PM)

Unfortunately, the only questions on the Lions I'm getting are cheap shots on Lewand. Maybe I haven't seen every one. But if you have a legit question, by all means ask it.

Lyndon (Slave Lake, Alberta)

Dont you think there's value in holding team executives to a higher standard than players? Aren't they looked upon for ultimate leadership in professionalism?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:50 PM)

No. I think everyone should be held to the same standard. What a novel concept.

Cheese (DC)

Bruce to Hester: "Catch the ball and run down field towards the goalline."Hester: "What??? You mean no screen passes 15 yards behind the line?"

Kevin Seifert
  (2:51 PM)

Exactly. Hopefully that play has been burned and buried at Halas Hall.

David (Atlanta)

Looks like the Bears made the right call on Benson after all, huh?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:51 PM)

Uh, yes. Thomas Jones? Not so sure.

James (Denver)

You get a lot of grief for your apparent favoritism toward the Vikings. Heck, some say you blog about the Packers too much too. Do you think you do a good job balancing all four teams? If the Lions and Bears were to field better teams, do you think it'd be "easier" to balance the blog?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:53 PM)

In all seriousness, I've just come to accept that there will always be objections to the balance on this blog. I do think it's progress that people now think I do too much Vikings/Packers. But I really just try to post things that are interesting, regardless of the teams. The worst thing I can do is force ridiculous blog posts just so I can say I have something every day on every team.

Mike (Raleigh)

ESPN actually had an article about the Jets interest in Russel. As a Lions fan I'm all about Russel going to the Vikes though. If he is the starter after Favre retires, I could see a 6 win season. Your thoughts?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:55 PM)

I would actually be OK with it. I've been saying the Vikings need to take a swing at finding their next quarterback. That would qualify as one. So it would be hard for me to say they shouldn't sign him.

Nick (Madtown)

I think you missed a player for fastest in the division. Johnny Knox.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:56 PM)

That's a good one.

Lyndon (Slave Lake, Alberta)

The whole homer thing is getting old, can I suggest you run the stats, justify the results and stop posting complaints?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:56 PM)

It is old, but I can't assume that every reader/chatter has been with us from Day 1. The stats are on the blog. Check out "categories."

Kyle (Minny)

How much cake could a Pat Williams eat, if a Pat Williams could eat cake?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:57 PM)

As much as a woodchuck could chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood.

Chuck (New Milford, CT)

With the wonderful job that Marinelli did in "Coaching up" the lions defense as head coach, why in the heck does anybody think he's going to do such a great job in Chicago? Seems like he's still living off of the reputations of the personnel he had in Tampa...

Kevin Seifert
  (2:57 PM)

I think that's a fair question. He's never been a coordinator in the NFL. Should we assume he's up to the task just because he has been an exceptional defensive line coach?

Lyndon (Slave Lake, Alberta)

How about a healthy Peterson of fastest player?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:58 PM)

He got run down from behind by Phillip Buchanon last year.

Lyndon (Slave Lake, Alberta)

Ok, one or two more.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:59 PM)

I think you've officially been on one too many chats. Because you're right... one or two more!

Jason (SD)

Thoughts on Chad Greenway and Ben Leber? Would seem to me they probably keep one, not both, and neither will get an extension unless one distinguishes himself.

Kevin Seifert
  (3:00 PM)

Right now, they don't have a replacement for either. So I think they'll definitely try to keep Greenway, and probably Leber as well.

Kevin Seifert
  (3:00 PM)

Ok everyone, thanks so much and have a great few weeks! Chat with you next month!
