Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to our weekly fun-filled boxing discussion. New notebook is up, as are two new blogs, several news stories and updated schedule and rankings. We've got a decent fight tomorrow on Showtime with Lopez-Concepcion and lots of stuff coming up, so let's get to it.

Chris (Newark, NJ/ Puerto Rico)

JuanMa made a comment, that Pacman's not fighting on Saturday, but if he wanted to, he'll get Tito Trinidad! Dream match, Tito vs. Pacman at 147, who wins?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

That would be a helluva fight. They both have the power to knock the other guy out. Tough call, but good fight.

Carlos (Lexington, KY)

I'm a big Juanma Lopez's fan, but I must said I do completely agree with Celestino Caballero's words in today's notable quotes. He truly deserves better opportunities. For us boxing freaks who want to see the best against the best, it's a shame the way sometimes how politics and the way the boxing business is done go against this. I would love to see the 126 lbs. champions against each other. In the meatime, I guess I will keep bitting the bullet and hoping for the best.

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

I outlined my road map to a featherweight king in my blog yesterday. I think the road is doable. I agree Caballero deserves an opportunity but life is sometimes not fair.

Erik (Huntsville, AL)

Dano, assuming Donaire wins this week and Montiel wins next week, do you think a fight between the two would land on HBO or Showtime?

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

I think Showtime would definitely have interest in that fight. At least I would hope so. I would very much doubt HBO would be interested since they have not done much business ever below 126 pounds.

Jose Sulaiman (Hell)

The new Interim Diamond NBA Champion-in-Waiting is the Miami Heat, provided they pay our sanctioning fee.

Bryant (Pitt)

True story last Friday at an amateur boxing event, I met a judge(I am a judge in training) who was also a FREAK but never posts or asks questions, when talking to him I asked if he follows your chats and he does so then I told him my name with location and he was blown away to meet a fellow freak, thanks for your help last week John the guidance was great, also great notebook Dan, and you have more followers then you know

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

Maybe I should start a Freak dating service?

Richard Sniper (Santa Monica, CA)

Do you think Irving has any chance tonight against Mike Jones?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

I like Jones big in this one, but think Garcia can at least make it a little bit fun.

Matt (Minneapolis)

What are Caballero's options right now? Does he just have to stay patient and keep winning fights until Juanma vs Gamboa is out of the way?

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

He may have to go home to Panama and take a stay busy fight. The network dates are drying up faster than my lawn in the Virginia heat, so not sure if there will be an opportunity.

Will D (Cumberland, RI)

Buy or Sell: Arum keeps his mid-July deadline for Mayweather to accept the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

As Bob told me this week it's not a "hard" deadline. But it is reasonable that sometime in the next week or so, maybe even two weeks, that a decision has to be made one way or the other for the sake of properly getting the promotion rolling with such thing as having sponsors plan for their activations, etc... To make the fight as big as possible they need several months to do their thing.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga)

Dan if you're Berto do you A) Take the Mike Jones fight or B) Look to get one of the big names from 140 to fight at a catch weight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Mike Jones has to win tonight and the fight has not been officially offered to him anyway, nor has HBO (or even Showtime) committed to buying it so that is not technically on the table right now. The big names at 140 are occupied. Bradley fights next week. Alexander fights in August and then HBO is going to dangle big money to have them fight in late January. The other big names, Khan, Maidana -- have other plans.

chuzen (st. louis)

so, they kicked luevano to the curb. but business is busisness, but i still feel bad for him!

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

One thing to remember -- boxing is ALWAYS business.

Joe (NJ)

Are you surprised or disappointed that the Klitschko/Povetkin fight has not been picked up by American TV. And with College football and the NFL having begun can we rule out ESPN as an opiton?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

I have no emotion about it whatsoever.

Charles (DFW)

What about Caballero vs. Ponce De Leon?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Good fight, but I would doubt Ponce would take it when he is so close to a mandatory position. Not to mention Caballero already beat him once.

mike (ohio)

Dan, where does Anthony Peterson fit into the picture with Soto. I know he's the mandatory and Soto is clearly avoiding him. Whats the latest on Peterson's end?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

He doesn't. Soto is ducking him badly and Top Rank is aiding him in the process and hurting their other fighter. Peterson is being lined up to face Brandon Rios on HBO on Sept. 11 under Gamboa-Rojas.

Bobby (New York)

DTM, percentage chance that Margarito gets his license in Nevada?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

I think he will probably get it unless there is a meltdown at the hearing. I am actually listening to the commission meeting right now. They are up to item 7 on the agenda. Margarito is item 32.

Bobby (Durham)

Shame on the promoters for not making Darchinyan-Donaire II happen.

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

It wasn't the fault of the promoters. It was Darchinyan and his management, not his promoter or the Donaire side.

Charles (DFW)

If the Barrera-Soto fight doesn't happen, could you see Soto fighting the winner of Guerrero-Casamayor at 138 or even 140?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

No. Soto is going to fight Barrera before the end of the year. It is possible he could defend in September against somebody else and then fight Barrera later in the year.

Brock (Illinois)

What is your opinion of Chris John's position? I think he needs to take on Juanma, Gamboa, or Caba real soon.

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

He has a fight later this month and then I would hope he'll come back to the US and have a bigger fight. He's been out of action for a bit because of illness.

Taylor (SLC, UT)

Dan, I was riveted by the truth of Caballero's quote "Why should I have trouble feeding my family because I'm too good?". It just goes to show that boxing is a business, and in some ways you have to be a skilled personality out of the ring as well as a skilled boxer. Agree?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Agreed. Personality, as well as talent, is a big part of the equation.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Dan, gatti-ward 3, gotta love when gatti told mcgirt in the corner that his hand was broken - buddy asked thunder what he wanted to do and gatti said "I gotta go on"!

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

Yup. I remember it well. Gatti was a warrior or all warriors.

Charles (DFW)

You said Nonito Donaire might get first crack at Fernando Montiel, but what about Vic Darchinyan fighting Montiel first? There seems to really be some bad blood there.

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

Very doubtful. Why would Top Rank give Vic a shot over their own fighter who wants it first, especially after it was Vic who ruined the rematch with Donaire?

Chris (PA)

I think May/Pac is signed and they are just waiting for all this LeBron crap to die down so the fight announcement doesn't get pushed to the back pages.

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

You're wrong.

Diego (of Gilroy)

whats next for Mares? if I was Showtime, I'd try to get him in the ring ASAP. Its sad I havent heard his name revolve around other big name fighters at 118.

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

There is nothing in the works for him. There was a brief mention of him taking next week's Telefutura main event on short notice when Mora pulled out a couple of weeks ago to fight Mosley but it didn't happen.

corey (WestWick)

I think if Lopez can win tomorrow then I got out right pick him to beat Rafeal Marquez will call it changing of the guard

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

I agree with you. I think him and Marquez is a very interesting fight but I love Lopez in that one.

Don (Buffalo)

Dan - will the Bika fight be shown in the movie theaters? I know it may be available on-line, but I plan on watching the card in a theater and really want to see this fight!

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

I really don't know. That's a good question.

Tim (Austin)

Dan where can you listen in on the NSAC meeting?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

They're up to item 17. I am listening on the telephone via a Bat Phone call in number provided to me by the commission.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Dan, does love child vs. paul williams @ 147 make any sense for either of them?

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. Do you have something against Joel Julio? Not a good fight for him and not a fight that I could envision ever happening, thankfully.

Neil (Quebradillas, Puerto Rico)

El Dano, Do you think Tito Trinidad is a sure hall of famer.. Did you hear the yankees might get Cliff Lee, = 2010 World Champs. go lopezzzzz

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

Trinidad is a LOCK. And I am pretty pumped if the Yanks can pick up Lee. He's one of the best pitchers in baseball.

Jason (Riverisde, CA)

Hey Dan. Saw FNF for the first time on ESPN.com(ESPN3) and it was great to watch from my comp. Only question I have is will there be some sort of agreement reached so HBO/Showtime footage will be shown? Notice it always blacks out whenever they are doing recaps or fighter profile vids.

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

That's possible. I am not sure of the contractual stuff regarding those rights.

Diego (of Gilroy)

will the meeting last as long as the chat? because I hope to get Margaritos desicion news on here lol

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

We'll see what happens.

Charles (DFW)

Does Golden Boy stream fights live like Top Rank does on their website? I'd like to see the Seth Mitchell fight also on the Marquez-Diaz II undercard.

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

They have not been doing that.

Diego (of Gilroy)

so what are Paul Williams plans? I understand he doesnt want a rematch with Martinez now, but I hope he quits dreaming about fighting Floyd and Manny because that isnt going to happen.

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

They want to go to 147. HBO isn't interested. We'll see what happens.

corey (WestWick)

That would have been great to seeyou cut to yesterdays leborn saga and tell the world that Manny vs Floyd had been signed

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

I was thinking LeBron was going to announce he had signed with Top Rank and was going to fight Manny.

robb (north andover, ma)

one hour special for mayweather's decision fight/not fight pacquiao?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!!

Ty (Walnut, CA)

David HayemakerMore like David CopperfieldGone and disappeared

Andy (UK)

I've read in places that it will ultimately be Showtimes decision as to where Froch-Abraham takes place....any truth to this?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

As I have read the contract but understanding is that Showtime has the final say so.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Hello Dan, you referenced Pavlik in the notebook fighting on the Bute vs Brinkly undercard, any names being floated as an opponent?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

No. First they have to see if he wants to do it. If he does, it will be against a lesser opponent.

John (Jersey)

I'm excited for Marquez - Diaz in the theaters... $15 per person is closer to regular movie prices than the $60 hi-def ppv costs...

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

Agreed. Seeing in the theaters is economical and probably a cool experience.

Chris (Newark, NJ/ Puerto Rico)

Is there at least a slim chance that Hopkins and Ward might get it on? One could dream, right?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

Smoke crack much?

David Haye (London)

I agreed to a 50-50 split but the Klitscko's will not agree to 30 oz gloves. They don't want the fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

LOL!

Liam (Scotland)

OMG, you took an actual question from the UK. I think I'm gonna pass out.

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

Most of the questions from you blokes suck.

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

Derek Byrant has just been approved of a license in Nevada so he can fight Seth Mitchell July 31 on the Marquez-Diaz 2 undercard.

Chris (PA)

How nice would it be to see Bute/Pavlik this winter and then the winner fight the Super 6 champ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

Quite nice.

ztrain (oxford,ma)

dan what are the chances that a bradley-pac man fight happening if pbf and pac man cant agree to terms

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

Unlikely at this point.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Dan, i was actually going to let liam know that uk questions really aren't that good but i like how you put it much better - "Most of the questions from you blokes suck."....classic!

John (Jersey)

There's actually a theater near me which brings food and beer to you in the theater (replaced every row with tables...)... We need to get the fight shown there...

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Call them and ask.

PJ (Fairfield,CA)

any chance berto cotto at 154?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

I don't see Berto going to 154 at this point. If anything, Cotto would come back to 147.

Don (Buffalo)

Dan - the fact Arum is dropping Cotto & Margarito as possible Pacquiao opponents insults boxing fans. Neither has done anything recently to earn that fight. In your opinion - aside from PBF - who has earned the right to face Pacuiao?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Why is it an insult? If Mayweather turns down the Pac fight what is Manny supposed to do, sit and not fight? Cotto and Margarito are recognized top fighters (despite Margarito's issues). Both would probably sell (although not like a Floyd fight).

david (cape canaveral)

DR, theres talk of who Manny could fight if the May fight doesn't happen....what about 'lil Floyd, where does he go??

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

Arum has made it pretty clear that Manny would fight either Cotto or Margarito. As for Floyd, not idea. I would think he just won't fight the rest of the year and maybe come back next spring and finally fight Manny.

PJ (Fairfield,CA)

do you see zab having a real chance as being the linear champ a 140 or gettin through guys like khan, bradley , alexander? I see him able to get past khan and posibly bradely, but Alexander beats him clean. your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

Zab has the talent and the power to hang or beat anyone at 140. Will he? Who knows? Will get the opportunity? Who knows? Will he take it seriously and act mature? Who knows. But if, a big if, he gets a chance to fight a top guy at 140 he is obviosly very capable of winning.

Anthony (Sacramento)

Dan the ONLY reason I would want to see Margacheto get the pay day to fight Pacquiao is so pacman beats the crap out of him for being a cheater.

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

You're probably not the only one who feels that way. The promoters dont care why you watch as long as you pay to do so.

G$ (Bay Area)

Is GBP planning to load up the Sept 18 card like they have with Marquez-Diaz II? Mora vs Mosley and Alvarez vs M Hatton doesnt belong on PPV at all

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

They are working on the card. Alvarez-Hatton is by no means a made fight, just thrown out there. Plus Matthew Hatton fights next week. One fight being discussed is Victor Ortiz vs. Vivian Harris.

Mario (Sioux Falls, SD)

I just read that Jason Estrada vs. Devin Vargas has been named a main event for an ESPN broadcast in August. So you're telling me that Mike Jones' fight was turned down, but this kind of crap is getting approved? Who makes these ridiculous decisions? Give me one reason why Devin Vargas should be on TV.

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

I cant defend ESPN on this one. Estrada-Vargas is a woeful FNF main event.

PJ (Fairfield,CA)

would maragrito getting reinstated set a pecedent in the NSAC? has anybody else ever been busted for hand wraps and been given a 2nd chance?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Not that I am aware of but Mike Tyson got his license back after he bit a man's ear off.

Bryant (Pitt)

Wow is it surprising that Sturm wants to fight Cintron next? Funny how jumping through the ropes to get out of a fight to getting a middlewight title shot?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Not a lot of notable names to fight and Sturm and his people figure he's a name guy Sturm beats. What can I tell ya?

Shawn (Tempe)

Seems that Arum's back up plan is to have pac fight margarito if mayweather doesn't get done and if it does get done, to have margartio-cotto rematch, sound about right?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

That is certainly a scenario Bob has talked about.

Joe (NJ)

Who's Khans next likely opponent

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Looks like JM Marquez in December if Marquez beats Diaz in their July 31 rematch.

Chris (NY)

Any chance for a Concepion upset?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Well he can bang a bit so yeah, he's got that puncher's chance. But I think Lopez handles him.

Joel (Eastchester, NYq)

Dan, in terms of the Bute/Brinkley fight, would you lean towards another network picking it up in terms of Showtime or that it would be a small PPV? Really want to see this fight

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

Really don't know at this point.

Scott (Bloomington,MN)

Tyson did that in the heat of the moment, Margacheato was premeditated, much worse in my book.

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

I am not saying it wasn't worse, I am saying Nevada has relicensed people all the time after being punished.

Kent (Cleveland, OH)

Are you part of the process for approving FNF main events? If you are you should be ashamed. I wouldnt even want to see that crap as an opener. Vargas was knocked out by kingpin johnson and totally dominated by the guy that just got totally dominated.

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

I have NOTHING to do with it at all.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

dan, did you see the viv harris vs. Lucas Matthysse? what did you make of that and is it true that matthysse outright refused a rematch?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

I did see it. It was a terrible stoppage and, yes, he refused the rematch, which Golden Boy tried to make.

david (cape canaveral)

DTM, Seth Mitchell has no amatuer exp. is he really any good?? I know he hits hard...but will he ever be top 10-20??

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

I like his potential. Good athlete, good size and from what I hear has a good work ethic. To me, he's a guy to at least watch for.

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

They have gotten to the Margarito section of the meeting. This should be interesting.

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

Some preliminary stuff going on right now. Lawyers talking to the commission and going through some technical stuff.

Brad (Philly)

In the beginning of the second Mayeather vs Pacquiao negotiations Bob Arum talked about a gag order, so why is he the only one running his mouth?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Because Bob is Bob.

Scott (Bloomington,MN)

DTM, What is your favorite Gatti fight? Mine has to be Gatti Ward I even though he lost it. The fight was unbelievable and the HBO broadcast for that fight couldn't have been better. I love it when Steward gets so caught up in the action in the 9th round that he is almost yelling at Ward to go back to the body.

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

There are so many. Gatti-Ward 1 and 3, Rodriguez is awesome, Ruelas is sensational, Calvin Grove is an underrated one, the two Robinson fights are epic. So many!

Dave (Rochester, NY)

dan, have sergio martinez and sturm's people discussed a fight at all?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

No, not that I am aware of.

John (Jersey)

Has Margarito actually severed ties with his former trainer? I remember seeing a report where he made an appearance at a fight card in Mexico with that guy... takes away from your argument that you didn't know about the wraps if you continue to talk to a guy who risked your career and other people's lives...

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

Yes, at least professionaly, he has severed ties with Capetillo. He was trained by Robert Garcia for his comeback fight in Mexico a couple of months ago.

chuzen (st. louis)

a little commission/margacheato play by play? only in these chats!

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

Margarito's attorney is making a presentation right now. Basically talking about Margarito's record has been spotless to this point and talking about how the past California inspector testified that he had done many of Margarito's fights and never suspected him of cheating.

John (Jersey)

Can't help the Yankee talks... Cliff Lee is scheduled to face them tonight... if they trade him today, he could legitimately pitch for them instead... that's fun...

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

That would be pretty cool.

Bryant (Pitt)

Dan I know Brinkley has won a few fights in a row but wouldn't you agree Miranda and andrade are better than Brinkley and Bute stopped both of them, what should be different? Jesse is walking into a beatdown

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

Brinkley is a perfectly fine opponent based on who is available. Doesn't make him the favorite, just makes him a reasonable opponent.

Bing (Philly)

Its so great being able to talk about James Kirkland again. So when does he get out of jail Dan?

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

Oct. 2 is when he is supposed to go to a halfway house.

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

The Margarito thing is getting interesting.

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

The chairman of the commission, Pat Lundvall -- she just interrupted Margarito's attorney and basically told him they are not going to retry the case from California.

Greg (Armonk, NY)

A condition of Margarito being reinstated should be that he has to fight Cotto again, but Cotto gets to load his wraps.

Tomer (New York, NY)

Is there any update on Michael Katsidis' next opponent?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

He just recently fought and there is nothing specific yet on his next fight. He had been mentioned as a possible Khan opponent for this summer, but Khan decided not to fight this summer.

Kevin (Phoenix, AZ)

Don't you think ESPN would be better off not doing the Estrada vs. Vargas fight and putting that wasted money into the week after show and making it much better? Even the freaks won't watch this horrible horrible fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Just for the record -- that fight is not 100 percent yet as far as I know.

Jason (Riverside,CA)

Hey Dan speaking of James Kirkland, is Ann Wolfe still going to be his trainer? I remember you mentioned not too long ago she was very upset at him over this whole situation.

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

From what I am told, she is very unhappy with him and may not train him when he is released.

Charles (DFW)

OMG!!!Bing asked an interim semi-intelligent question.

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

I had the same thought.

Lamont (Jersey City)

Why isn't the Chad Dawson-Jean Pascal fight now receiving the recognition it deserves? It's a real good fight and pretty underrated.

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

Maybe because it's still awhile away and there are other fights coming ahead of it, plus Pascal is not well known here and Dawson does not have a big personality.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

My Bob Arum bobblehead just gave me the finger.

G$ (Bay Area)

Dan....you gotta tell Schaefer to upgrade Solo Boxeo. Aside from the replay of Marquez-Diaz, its been terrible!

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

I agree, and I had no interest in that replay anyway. I prefer watching the HBO broadcast instead.

Khalil (Atlanta, GA)

Dan, anything coming up for Vanes Martirosyan?

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

Dude fought like a month ago.

Jose (NY)

How long do u think process will last for Margacheat?

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

It could be awhile. The lawyer is still in his opening remarks.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

dan, good news just continues to follow the kim-vazquez fight! first the announcement of tv coverage (too bad not on espn2) and now, garcia vs. lock co-feature. i cant wait and thanks for the update. let everyone involved know how good of a decision this is!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

Excellent show.

Riche (Irving)

Dan are we ever going to get that rematch with Donair and Darchinyan

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Doesn't look that way. Vic will have to live forever then knowing Nonito knocked him stiff.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

My David Haye bobblehead just called out my Bob Arum bobblehead, and then ran from the room.

Mitch (Oakland)

Dan, have you talked casually or professionally much with Jim Gray? I find him annoying to hear just as a voice/talking head and even more so as I hear him stumbling over his words. I don't care if he's dissing baseball players, mangling boxing interviews, or reading a script to LeBron.

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

I have at some Showtime fights and in the hotels before the fights. He's a nice guy who is one of the best. You may not love his tone sometimes but he asks the questions that need to be asked.

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

Margarito is now being questioned by the commissioners. He has a female translator from his attorney's firm translating for him.

Roy (Reno)

In recent memory has there been a more protected HBO champ than Berto? HBO should be ashamed for creating this financial nightmare, because Berto is good and I would love to see him fight the top guys but HBO has grossly overpaid him to the point that he is turning down good money and huge fights.

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

HBO absolutely carries a lot of the blame for creating the monster and then electing not to continue feeding it. They bid against themselves, overpaid him and wonder why he doesn't want to take a pay cut to face Mosley.

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

Margarito is saying it was pre-made knucklepads that Capetillo put on his hands before the Mosley fight. He said it is the only time Capetillo ever used a pre-made pad.

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

The commissioners are on him pretty good right now. Margarito said he did not ask Capetillo why he used a pre-made knucklepad for the fight even though it was out of the ordinary.

Milk Carton (grocery stores everywhere)

Has anyone seen Luis Collazo?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

Maybe he is in an arctic bunker with Winky Wright, Jim Morrison and Elvis?

Diego (of Gilroy)

If Margarito gets his license, I wonder how much Arum paid the commission.........

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

You're an idiot.

Charles (DFW)

I thought Elvis was on the French Riviera sipping cocktails with Tupac and Biggie Smalls.

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

My bad.

Roy (Reno)

I know he doesn't deserve it but I am pulling for Margs to get his license reinstated.

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

This hearing could go awhile.

Greg (Yonkers, NY)

Why do you post stupid questions just so you can call the person an idiot? LOL

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

You're an idiot too.

Winky Wright (library)

I'm studying for my MBA !!

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

At least you're not studying for a WBA.

Joe (NY)

I presume you are listening to a conference call...not an online stream.

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

Correct, a teleconference. Audio only.

Chris (Newark, NJ/ Puerto Rico)

By when would the commission have a decision on his license? Can it be today? or would there be a process in which it might take longer?

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

They will decide today at this hearing unless something unusual happens.

Lamont (Jersey City)

What happens to the fighters of Shelly Finkel?

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

They are no longer under contract to him. Many of his fighters had co-managers though, so they will be managed by that person. Others would become free agents.

Nick (St. Paul)

Is showtime televising the Donaire fight tomorrow, or just the Juanma fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

Donaire and Juanma bouts.

Joel (Queens, New York)

How much of chance does Elio Rojas have against Gamboa now that he has a class trainer in Kevin Cunningham who will give Rojas a great gameplan?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

He's a good boxer and maybe a little bigger, but Gamboa is faster and a bigger puncher. It could be an interesting fight. I know Kevin will have a good plan, but it will be up to Rojas to see if he can use it.

Sean (Dunmore)

If Winky was studying for his WBA would they make him an Interim Graduate?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

John (San Fran)

Is Margs showing any remorse yet or his he still playing dumb?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

Still denying he knew anything was in the wraps. He just said, "Sincerely I did not feel anything in the wrapping."

Joe (NY)

Any shot this chat can last until the meeting ends?

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

We'll see I guess.

Steve (PA)

When will Samuel Peter fight next?

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

Could be awhile.

Shawn (Minneapolis)

Hey Dan, I know Gatti drew big crowds in AC, any idea on how big of crowds they were. 10k, 15k?

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

Sold out Boardwalk Hall, 12,000-13,000ish regularly.

J in FLA (Merritt Island, FL)

I just wanted to let the world know that I have decided to participate in an afternoon chat and not just the RAD ones.

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

Apparently we are all so blessed.

Dave (UK)

Dan, you are unbelievable! Why do you hate the Brits so much? You used to slag off Hatton and Calzaghe with alarming regularity, you constantly slagged off the British fans despite the fact we are the most passionate fans in the world! And now you keep slagging off Haye about these Klitschko fights, when you actually dont even report the dealings correctly. Biased journalism at its best. Its almost as bad as how much you hate Mayweather, the true P4P king!

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

I love British fans. Just not the stupid ones.

Ross (Boston,Ma)

I am a little disappointed that the Povetkin/Klitchko fight isnt on american tv. Although Klitchko is the favorite, this is the first time in a few years that I believe Klitchko is going to have an actual fight on his hands. Povetkin is an accomplished amatuer (gold medal) and has won enough pro fights versus decent to good competition to be considered a contender!

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

It will wind up somewhere I would think, even if on PPV.

G$ (Bay Area)

Have you asked Dan Goossen who the hell they are targeting at Welterweight? The big dogs have ZERO interest in him. Its a joke they are passing on a Martinez rematch

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

I have asked. I do not get a specific name or names in the answer.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

J in FLA is an interim Freak!

Dan (NC)

Danno - will James Toney ever box again?

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

Depends on how bady Cotoure crushes him.

Jeff (Redondo Beach, CA)

Keep feeding us those commission updates They are great!

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

They are having a discussion about specifics of the hand wrapping and the routine that was usually followed. Margarito said again he didnt see anything different or feel anything different when he flexed his hand. He said, "I felt the wraps were fine."

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Hey Dan, Any news on what is next for Jason Litzau?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Nada. John Wirt from Square Ring tried to make a rematch with Rocky Juarez, but Juarez took the Linares fight insted.

Bryant (Pitt)

"marinate" hope Arum dosent get "burned" this weekend, I believe Juan ma is looking past a guy that can hit hard, I think he's in for a fight...

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

I don't think he is looking past him. I spoke to Juanma on Wednesday and he was awfully serious about the fight it seemed to me.

Chris M. (Toronto)

Great blog on Haye. Do you think the Klitschkos should start sporting t-shirts of them holding Haye's decapitated set of balls?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

That would be hilarious.

Rob (Ft Laud)

I hear Pavlik is considering staying at Middleweight instead of moving up. Good or bad move?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

His manager told me the next fight will probably be at 168. I doubt he will stay at 160. For what? There isn't even a big fight for him, especially compared to a Bute fight.

John (Jersey)

Everybody says it all about Juanma!, but he's not looking past the fight, Uncle Bob is. I think Juanma!'s gonna starch him, especially now that he's getting comfortable as a 126...

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

Exactly. It's Bob's job to look to the future.

Matt (Boston)

Enjoyed the blog on the Featherweight tourney idea. Who do you think comes out of that tourney as "the" champ

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

I really don't know. There are a lot of competitive matches.

Chris (PA)

DTM, I don't think you're "slagging off" Haye enough. That punk won't fight the KO brothers based on excuses that change each negotiation. Haye is a b&*%$ and British fans that defend him are REALLY STUPID AND ANNOYING. Most passionate fans in the world must mean most delusional fans in the world. Maybe if the UK press weren't unbelievable homers the UK fans would know the real stories.

Troof (Philly)

I know everyone is saying Jones might fight Berto next, but what about D-Hop calling out Berto? If i was Berto he would be the guy i fought, good record but safer opponent than Jones.

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

What TV network would buy a garbage fight like Berto-DHop? DHop can ask for it all he wants but nobody wants to see it. At least Jones is an interesting up and comer with an appealing style.

Fred (Santa Ana)

Thanks for the Margarito Updates keep it coming.

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

You got it. Right now the lawyer is making the point that when Margarito was asked for his hands after Naazim objected he was very cooperative with the commission inspector and offered no resistance when asked for his glove or when the wraps were about to be cut off.

Troof (Philly)

Why do you hate Demetrius Hopkins so much?

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

I don't hate him at all. I am just keeping it real.

David (Chicago)

Why won't Pavlik fight Librado Andrade?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

Who said he won't?

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

We have news from the Bat Email.

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

Weights from Puerto Rico are in: Juan Manuel Lopez 125.3, Bernabe Concepcion 125, Nonito Donaire 114 1/2, Hernan Marquez 115, Eden Sonsosa 121.6, Jonathan Oquendo 121.4.

J in FLA (Merritt Island, FL)

Any word on where Ward / Dirrel will take place?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

Not yet.

chuzen (st. louis)

any chance of a RAD this weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Hadn't actually thought about it. Hmmmm. Maybe.

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

OK, the lawyer is done. Now Margarito himself is formally addressing the commission.

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

He is thanking the commission for considering the application and says he appreciates their time.

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Margarito said he would never do anything to dishonor or discredit boxing.

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

He is talking about his previously clean reputation of having never been accused of cheating. "I was as proud of that reputation as I was of my record in the ring."

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

He is saying, "I understand you will have questions for me and I will answer them with the truth exactly as I did when I presented myself to the commission in California. I didnt have plater of Paris on my hads as some people have commented incorrectly."

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

"Before the fight my trainer Javier Capetillo, my former trainer, put a knuckle pad made of gauze on my hand. I learned later the knuckle pad hd something irregular on the inside but I didnt know that truthfully in the moment."

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

"The knuckle pad didnt seem diffent to ones he had put on my hands before."

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

"I never felt anything hard or irregular. Evertthing I felt was that it was a knucklepad that was normal. In that moment I was focused on one thing and that was preparing myself to go out to the fight with Mosley."

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

"If I would have noticed there was something irregular or wrong I would have been the first person to say I can't go out and fight."

Brandon (L.A.)

Do You buy what Margarito is selling?

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

"I had many opportunities to fight in the past year (during the revocation period) but I respected the rules of hte commission. I thought about and talked to my family and decided not to fight."

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

"Over the past year I have taken steps, spoken to my new trainer about the wrapping process about not breaking the rules. I have paid a very high price this past year."

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

"I received many offers during my year punishment and what I decided was not to fight. I paid a high prioce but I think I've earned the right to come before you and ask respectfully for a license to restore my reputation with the fans."

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

His statement is over. Now he is being questioned by the chairman.

jeff (burbank)

are you watching this on tv somehow? how does margarito look. is he reading a statement, or speaking off the cuff?

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

I am not sure if he was reading or doing it off the cuff, but it sounded like prepared remarks.

Joe (NY)

I know this is a tough question because you can only hear him...but does he sound legit to you?

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

It sounds sorta legit.

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

"I accept responsibility because they are my hands and that is why I have taken steps to make sure this never happens again."

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

He is saying he will now be more involved in the wrapping process rather just let his trainer do it and zone out.

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

"I am going to be involved in the process and reviewing the materials that go on my hands."

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

He was asked why he hasn't reapplied in California.

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

"They gave me a punishment for one year. I havent gone back. I've already satisfied the punishment they gave me."

Chris (Newark, NJ/ Puerto Rico)

Is that an interpretor? Is he actually speaking in English? or Spanish?

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

He is speaking Spanish and the comments are being translated.

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

He is being asked again why he wouldn't go back and apply in California.

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

"I come here to the commission in Nevada to show the world I dont need to use anything on my hands."

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

He is not answering the question, obviously.

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

"I've already met the punishment they gave me. I think even today they probably wouldn't give me a license and I don't think that's fair."

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

He was asked if the Cali punishment was fair. "It is just (meaning justified) because they found something irregular. If I would have noticved I wouldn't have gone out (to the fight)."

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

The lawyer is saying they are in Nevada because he's suing California.

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

And he is making the point that they are not obligated that they have to apply in Cali and that he can apply anywhere he wants.

Zab Judah (Las Vegas)

I'm pretty sure that my shower door illegally wrapped itself.

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

Lovely comic relief.

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

A commissioner just asked what could have happened to Shane had they not discovered those wraps.

Taylor (SLC, UT)

Keep it coming...this is good stuff. Thx.

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

I'm trying.

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

His answer -- "It would have been harm to Shane Mosley. It would have put him in danger. If I had known there is no way I would have gone out there."

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

A commissioner has asked to go into deliberations.

Mark (ATL)

Why is Margocheato suing California?

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

Over the situation, duh.

Roy (Reno)

This is CLASSIC! You are the MAN!

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

Thanks. You never know what you will get in the weekly Freak Chat.

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

Commissioner Skip Avansino is saying he should have gone to Cali to apply because they have the files and are well versed in the case. He says he knows there is no obligation to do that and that Nevada is cvapable of voting up or down but he suggests to Margarito that it could be his in his best interest to return to California. He says he has served his time in California and they would be willing to listen to his testimony and statements. "I think he needs to go to Calif and clean this matter up. They should be the first to rule."

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

This is getting interesting.

Derek (edmonton, alberta)

If the NSAC commision gives this guy a license it will be another sleazy chapter in the already-dodgy history of the sport.

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

That is your opinion.

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

The chairman is disagreeing with Avansino and saying Nevada should be able to vote without him having to go to California.

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

Chairman Lundvall: "I do nto think he has aduty legally or morally to go back to California."

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

She is saying she understands because of the lawsuit pending.

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

Lundvall: "It is incumbent upon this commission to act upon the application."

Kris Krepps (GR)

I don't buy this. I watched the Cotto fight twenty times. Soon as he started landing punches in the late rounds Cottos face turned to hamburger. He should be in jail.

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

Many people have that opinion.

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

Avansino made a motion to table the application until he goes back to California.

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

Commissioner Bill Brady just seconded the motion from Avansino.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan,Great stuff.....as always! How many voting members on the NSAC? And your opinion on weter he ets reinstated?

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

Five memebers.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

No doubt Dan, this is good chat material here.

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

Glad you enjoy it. This is a different sort of chat for sure.

chuzen (st. louis)

a little dissent within the commission? this is getting GOOD!

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

It is.

Bk Don (Brooklyn)

Is Arum present at the hearing?

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

No, Arum is in Puerto Rico for the Lopez-Concepcion card. Top Rank president Todd duBoef is there on behalf of Top Rank.

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

They are clarifying the motion is not to deny the application (which would basically give him a one-year suspension). The motion is to table the application so he can go to Calif.

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

They're getting real technical with the rules.

Jeff ((Redondo Beach, CA))

Will they make a decision today on this today? Or will it carry over into next week?

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

It will either be voted today or it might be tabled.

Charles (DFW)

Wouldn't tabling it still mean several months of basic suspension?

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

I'm not sure of the timing.

Joe (San Francisco, CA)

If the whole boxing writing thing doesn't work out for you, court transcription could always be a 2nd career

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

LOL! No thanks.

Mike (Tulsa)

I have no sympathy for Margs, but I can't help but feel Chairman Lundvall is right. Either you're the Nevada Comm, or you're California Lite. Make a decision.

Margarito ((In Disgust))

"I'm going going, back back, to Cali Cali"

Derek (edmonton, alberta)

I fully agree w/ Avansino and Brady. The NSAC should respect the sanction of the CSAC. Margacheato made a foolish move in suing the CSAC and must now own up to that.

Fernando (FT Carson, CO)

sounds like the commission is unsure or how they want to handle this decision. is this so they can avoid criticism for whatever decision is made?

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

Exactly.

chuzen (st. louis)

how many people are actually prsent in the room?

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

I don't know. Margarito and his team, Top Rank people, some of the commissioners. Other commissioners from the north part of the state are on the phone.

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

They are questioning if he is remoreful right now.

PJ (Fairfield,CA)

i feel like im watching greata van susteran on court tv hahah

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

T.J. Day, another commissioner, agrees with the motion. Lundvall says she does not support the motion and wants to procede.

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

She said, "There is not value in kicking the can down the road." She wants Nevada to take a stand.

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

This is a real nailbiter I gotta tell you. I have no idea what is about to happen.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

WOW. It seems as if they are looking for the back door.

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

I see both sides. On one hand he can apply anywhere under the rules. So he doesn't have to go back to Cali. On the other hand, California is where this happened, so some commissioners want to defer to the state.

Khalil (Atlanta, GA)

This is like getting in trouble with your mom and then asking your dad if you can come out of your room.

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

Good analogy.

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 PM)

Lundvall is going strong for Margarito. She says he deserves another chance.

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 PM)

She said: "Asking for us to make a decision on his application he deserves that kind of answer instead of us passing it on to someone else."

chuzen (st. louis)

lundvall has GUTS! it is clear that the other members don't want to make a decision, but she is her own man...er. woman

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

She said she supports his application and Avansino is still calling for a vote.

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

They voted. 4-1. The commission has made a decison that it is not taking any action!

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

WOW!

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

They say he should go back to Calif. After that a process he is invited back to Nevada.

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

I am fairly stunned right now.

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

For the record -- Lundvall was the yes vote.

John (Jersey)

They basically are afraid to make a decision, it seems... He should have gone to Texas or Florida first... one of the easier states to get licensed...

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

I dont know about that. I think they are respectful of Cali.

Chris (Newark, NJ/ Puerto Rico)

Good Reporting Dano!

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

Damn, that was very surprising. That was an outcome I hadn't contemplated.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga)

Classic Chat D$$$$$ thanks alot we freaks are not worthy

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

Thanks.

John (Jersey)

Yeah, well done! Love some good live-blogging... that's a talent

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

I didn't expect to do that but it just worked out well.

Derek (Brooklyn)

D$, wtf just happened? Stunned is an understatement, so they won't vote on his license until he reapplies in Cali 1st?

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

Yes.

Slick Money (NY)

Dan how long would it take for Margo to apply in Cali now? And does it kill all the Pac-Margo talks?

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

No idea, but you can probably kiss a Margarito fight in the US good bye this year.

PJ (Fairfield,CA)

if there ever was a peabody for chat reporting you definitly deserve it!!!! awesome job, I felt like I was there.

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

Thank you.

Matt (Newburyport, MA)

This is an amazing chat, I can only imagine how Bob Arum will respond when he gets the phone call.

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

Yeah, I sorta dread making that call.

Dan Rafael
  (2:34 PM)

Ok, the meeting has adjourned. They did some housekeeping at the end and now the meeting is over.

Zim (Boston)

Looks like Margarito - Pacquiao as a fallback option just evaporated as well.

Dan Rafael
  (2:35 PM)

Exactly. Seems to me it's Pac-Mayweather or Pac-Cotto 2.

John (Jersey)

I think we can all safely assume the Bobfather is giving the finger in Nevada's general direction right now...

Dan Rafael
  (2:35 PM)

For sure.

JAY (SYRACUSE)

That was exciting better than Lebrick's show. He should never be allowed to fight again he could have killed someone.

Marc (Malden, MA)

We've often seen fighters go from state to state, applying for licenses whereever they can get them. Do you think this will set a precedent, that when one state says no, the others will also say no?

Dan Rafael
  (2:37 PM)

This will look very bad if he goes to another state. Nevada is the de fact leader in this country and if they did this other states might follow suit. Not necessarily though. When Nevada wouldn't license Tyson, they went to Tennessee and he was licensed for the Lewis fight.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

dan, your storytelling talents put us right in the actual courtroom! that was awesome and you painted a great picture!

Zim (Boston)

The chairwoman was absolutely correct in stating that the commission should rule on the application before them. Although I have my own opinion of Margarito, but he deserves a fair hearing and obviously didn't get one. On face value it seems like a fairly winnable appeal for another hearing.

Zim (Boston)

Four of my NSAC bobbleheads are bobbling from side to side...

Nizzi (Des Moines, IA)

Dan, do you think that this decision gives Floyd some additional leverage against Pac Man now that one of Pac Man's fall back options is gone?

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

No, because he still has another option.

John (Jersey)

Intriguing enough that Lundvall says she thinks Margarito deserves a second chance... did it sound like that was a hint towards deserving a decision or towards reinstatement?

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

My take was she thought he deserved an up or down vote, not to have the application table. How she would have actually voted I can't say but it sounded like she probably would have voted to give him a license.

Jake (England)

Does this mean we see Margarito fighting in Mexico again this year? or just in the courtroom?

Dan Rafael
  (2:39 PM)

I don't know. I guess Latin Fury here we come from Mexico.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga)

D$$$ buy or sell Margarito fights in Mexico this year?

Dan Rafael
  (2:39 PM)

Buy. I bet he fights in Mexico again.

Mike (Massapequa)

so he fights in Mexico

Dan Rafael
  (2:40 PM)

But that will drastically limit the caliber of fight he can have. No big money fight there for him compared to a fight in the US.

Troof (Philly)

I think this is totally the right decision. Just my opinion.

Bing (Philly)

Differences aside, epic chat. thanks Dan

fj ((ny))

Maybe Lundvall can give her balls to David Haye.

Dan Rafael
  (2:40 PM)

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Justin (Seattle)

The WBC would have readmitted him AND made him an interim champion.

Dan Rafael
  (2:42 PM)

OK, Freaks, thanks for a chat to remember for all time. I have to make some calls and write a news story on this, so I gotta get to it. But thanks again. Talk to you next week. Peace.
