Chat with Bill WIlliamson

Bill Williamson
  (2:01 PM)

Hi everyone, let's get rolling

Pat (Manhattan, Kansas)

Bill...any chance you, too, will now sign with the Miami Heat and quit writing your blog?!

Bill Williamson
  (2:02 PM)

sure,Iif they have the cap room.

Mark (Suwanee,GA)

How has Brady Quinn looked in OTA's

Bill Williamson
  (2:03 PM)

I just saw him for two days. I hear the Broncos are happy with t he way he has been coming along. Still a work in progress.

Devin (San Diego )

Since we aquired Josh Reed as insurance for VJ, do you think he will make any impact for our offense? I've seen cases when you give a guy a chance he will shine really bright for you.

Bill Williamson
  (2:03 PM)

I think he can be a 30-40 catch guy. I wouldn't expect much more.

Rusty (Denver)

Good Morning. What is your take on an extension for Champ Bailey (assuming CBA issues are ironed out) to play corner for a couple more years, and then maybe move to safety for the last few years of his career?Do you see him as a possible Ed Reed in his mid 30's?

Bill Williamson
  (2:06 PM)

That's probably what will happen and it seems Champ is OK with it. This is a special player. He just turned 32. He told me last month he wll play, at least, five more years. He can do it. I haven't sen much of a decline.

Jeff (Quincy )

So Raiders Defense this year. 4-3. 3-4, Or Something in between?

Bill Williamson
  (2:08 PM)

Yes, probably something in between. All of these players Oakalnd is brinigng in are better 3-4 fits, so i'd imagine we'll see the 3-4, at laast sometimes even though the Raiders say they are sticking to the 4-3.

Jose (Victorville)

Will the Raiders be better in the passing game this year? i just keep hearing about them trying to stop the run.

Bill Williamson
  (2:11 PM)

You talking passing defense? Oakland has a solid secondary so the pass defense isn't that bad. If the Raiders can get some good pass rush going on a consistent basis, they should be solid against the pass.

Noel (san diego)

Bill , with The Jets giving Ferguson a big contract don't you think it is time to call out San Diego for not paying there players???? Both Jackson and McNeil are above average players!!!!

Bill Williamson
  (2:12 PM)

San Diego has always had a good track record of paying their guys. They keep their own. This deal is tricky because of the CBA, that's all.

Stuart (Brooklyn, NY)

Hi Bill. Love your work, always informative. What's your opinion of Ryan Mathews? What kind of season do you expect? With VJ holding out, that might affect SD's passing game so that defenses will focus mainly on stopping the run. Rivers just can't be as productive without VJ. Can he?

Bill Williamson
  (2:18 PM)

Thanks Stuart, I think there will be some more pressure on the run offense without Jackson, but with quarterback Philip Rivers and coach Norv Turner, the Chargers are going to toss the ball. They have a good receiving crew if yon add tight end Antonio Gates and running backs Darren Sproles and Mathews. Mathews will have to create a running game, but the passing game will still be there.

Pat (Manhattan, Kansas)

OK...now that I asked my humor question, what I'd really like to see is Denver taking one big plunge and bringing on Logan Mankins to the O-line. Sure, it's a longshot, but Denver would have as good a chance -- and a need -- as any, you think? It could be a beast of a line with Mankins.

Bill Williamson
  (2:19 PM)

I think Denver may pass on this one. He's too expensive. The Broncos have to find a way to pay Elvis Duemrvil and Champ Bailey. Doing so after giving top dollar to a guard may be difficult

Roberto (Tijuana, Mexico)

Bill: Do you know what the Chargers' , VJackson's and Marcus' mindset? The players lost a lot of salary by not signing their tenders, Jackson has baggage (or the appearance and nobody is guaranteed a payday next season except the Chargers (and the rest of the owners). Why would any player forfeit $3mill under these circumstances?

Bill Williamson
  (2:19 PM)

It's risky, isn't it.

Mr. W (Dallas)

How good is Demariyus Thomas, from what you've seen?

Bill Williamson
  (2:20 PM)

He's a rookie. It's going to take time. But he's big and fast and he looked good in the minicamp I was at. But there will be growing pains as he learns to run NFL routes.

Mr. W (Dallas)

Which RB tandem produces the best results this season: Charles & Thomas, Matthews

Bill Williamson
  (2:23 PM)

I'm relaly excited to see what the Chiefs' running game is going to be like. I really think it could be special and help turn this franchise around.

Rich (Pleasanton)

Bill, has there been anything coming out of the Raider camp on the progression of Veldheer and Bruce Cambell?

Bill Williamson
  (2:24 PM)

Veldheer is playing tackle and Campbell is palying guard. Both could start this year, but they have to continue to make progress.

Dustin (San Diego)

have any of the receivers the Chargers have mustered together other than Floyd and Reed showed anything?Maybe Buster Davis or Nanee?

Bill Williamson
  (2:25 PM)

Naanee is a legit player. He'll likely be the No. 2 receiver if Jackson doesn't report.

Spiegel (Stevenson Ranch,CA)

If you were planning a trip for one game in Oakland this year, what game would you pick? I'm leaning towards the home opener against St.Louis. Whats your "cant miss" game being played in Oakland this year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:28 PM)

How about the Colts' game the day after Christmas?

Christopher (Eugene)

With Shawn Andrews and Kevin Mawae open in free agency, why hasn't Oakland pursued them, and any chance they go after either of these former Pro Bowlers

Bill Williamson
  (2:29 PM)

There's 32 teams out there and none of them are signing these guys. When it gets this close to the season and big names are still available you have to wonder why.

Tarek (NYC)

Hey Bill Hope your keeping cool. Do you know if the Raiders will run more of the Wildcat this year with McFadden and Bush? Thanks.

Bill Williamson
  (2:30 PM)

I'd like to see it with McFadden more. He's a natural. I'm not sure why it wasn't used more the past two years in Oakland.

Michael (San Diego)

Hey Bill, what are the chances San Diego picks up TO?

Bill Williamson
  (2:30 PM)

Not very good.

Mr. W (Dallas)

Is CB an area of concern at all for San Diego?

Bill Williamson
  (2:30 PM)

Not if Cason plays well at rigth cornerback. I think they will be fine there.

Sean (Richmond VA)

when should McClain be signed

Bill Williamson
  (2:33 PM)

The start of camp. He has already said he has no plans to hold out. I don't think it will be an issue.

Spiegel (Stevenson Ranch,CA)

With the latest news on Jamarcus Russell getting arrested. Is this the end of his NFL career and the start of his glorious run in the UFL?

Bill Williamson
  (2:35 PM)

I have a feeling the next time we see Jamarcus is with the Omaha Nighthawks of the UFL.

Corey (North Carolina)

how many games do the raiders win this year

Bill Williamson
  (2:36 PM)

6-9

Josh (Mission Viejo, CA)

Given that Cromartie really hadn't done much since 2007, will Cason really be that much of a downgrade?

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

That's been my point all offseason. Cromartie was overrated. He wasn't any good the past two years. Cason will work harder and he's tougher.

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

That's been my point all offseason. Cromartie was overrated. He wasn't any good the past two years. Cason will work harder and he's tougher.

Steve (Fallbrook)

True or False?Malcom Floyd gets 1000 receiving yards in 2010.

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

If Jackosn is out, he'll be way over 1,000 yards. He had more than 700 yards as the No. 2 receiver last year.

Bryce (Shorewood)

4th quarter, down by 4. Broncos needs a TD. They're at the 5 yard line. Last play of the game. Orton throws to who for the winning TD?

Bill Williamson
  (2:38 PM)

They really don't ahev ago-to guy right now so I'd say Gaffney. But in a few months it could be Thomas, Decker or Royal.

Trevor (Saratoga NY)

What's the deal with Demaryius Thomas? Is his foot healing as well as Decker's?

Bill Williamson
  (2:39 PM)

Yes, Thomas should be fine. He was already practicing in the minicamp.

Dustin (San Diego)

And what is your take on Randy McMichael? No one has really mentioned him, and much like when we picked up Manuemaleuna (again from the Rams) he made a big impact at tight end. I would expect even more from Mcmichael given he has been a 8-9 year starter and has proven to be an able receiver

Bill Williamson
  (2:40 PM)

McMichael is a guy at the end of his career. He's decent depth, that's all.

Mike (Ohio)

Bill, next time can you have an hour long show to announce when your next chat will be?

Bill Williamson
  (2:41 PM)

A little bitter in Ohio? .... Can't say I blame you.

Lee (San Diego, CA)

Hey Bill, do you think Marcus McNeill will get anywhere near what B'Brickashaw Ferguson just got and will that deal in NY speed up the process with the Chargers and McNeill?

Bill Williamson
  (2:44 PM)

He'll be in that neighborhood when he gets paid, by whoever he gets paid by. But it may not be as much as Ferguson gets paid.

Josh (Mission Viejo, CA)

Is Buster Davis a bust or a breakout candidate?

Bill Williamson
  (2:45 PM)

Leaning toward Bust right now.

Sam (Sam Diego)

Do you still consider the San Diego roster among the most talented in the league at this point in time, given the holdouts of VJ & Marcus McNeill or will the Chargers be exposed?

Bill Williamson
  (2:47 PM)

One of the reasons why I thought the Chargers were one of the most loaded teams in the league was because of their LT and top WR. Without those two guys, the Charegrs aren't as good. That's just a fact. But they still have a solid roster. But it could be better.

michael (cali)

If Plax gets his work release what are the odds he ends up in the afc west, maybe in SD for cheap since the VJ thing?

Bill Williamson
  (2:47 PM)

About as high as T.O. playing in San Diego.

Mickey (NY)

Has JaMarcus Russell offically passed Ryan Leaf for biggest draft bust?

Bill Williamson
  (2:48 PM)

I think Russell was already a bigger bust than Leaf prior to his arrest. Now, he has the title cemented.

Randy Webb (Grove, OK)

How much improvement should we see from the Chiefs defense with Romeo Crennel at the helm and the rookie safetys?

Bill Williamson
  (2:49 PM)

It should help, but I'd like to see more pass rush help and perhaps another starting linebacker before I get too excited about this defense.

jerry (oakland)

Bill...did you ever hear whispers about JaMarcus' "potion" problem and do you think this is whythe Raiders filed a suit to recover some of their $$$? Thanks!

Bill Williamson
  (2:49 PM)

Like many in the media, yes, i heard the whispers.

Chris (Wickenburg, Az)

The situation in San Diego almost seems to be an extortion plot. Who will prevail here. Front office or players?

Bill Williamson
  (2:50 PM)

I'm not sure anybody wins in this deal.

LG (l.a. )

Bill, why doesn't anyone think the Broncos are an improved team? The loss of Marshall hurt but he was hardly a scoring machine.

Bill Williamson
  (2:51 PM)

Where you making up those 100 catches a year?

Randy Webb (Grove, OK)

Will Dwayne Bowe ever grow up and live up to his terriffic potential.

Bill Williamson
  (2:52 PM)

Now is the time for him. Now or maybe never in Kansas City. I think he has a short leash.

DAG (Durango CO)

Can Glenn Dorsey be the impact player everyone thought he was going to be coming out of college playing in the Chief's 3-4 scheme? Is Callagan a serviceable enough RT to help solidfy that side of the OL? Thx.

Bill Williamson
  (2:53 PM)

I think Dorsey is too talented not to finally get it. But it's time for him to get it. He has to help Kansas City this year.

jarad (ft worth, tx)

Great stuff Bill. Everyone talks about the Chiefs ground game, but what type of #'s do you expect from Cassel this year.?? He'll have a lil more time and he finally has some third down options with the additions of Urban and Moeaki.

Bill Williamson
  (2:55 PM)

I thinK Cassel will improve this year. Don't forget a full year with Chris Chambers. Those two really had a nice chemistry together in the final two months of last season.

Marty (Iowa)

the chiefs didn't do anything with their front 7 on defense. Do you believe that the players they have can pressure the qb, or stop the run, things they haven't been able to do in years?

Bill Williamson
  (2:56 PM)

Love the run on Chiefs' quesitons ... I think Dorsey and Jackson have to spark the front seven. They are getting paid big dollars to do so. It's starts with them.

Randy (Grove, OK)

How much improvement should we expect from the Chiefs O-line this season?

Bill Williamson
  (2:57 PM)

I think Wiegmann and Lilja will give nice veteran leadership to a young group that got better toward the end of last season. This group is a lot better as a whole.

Pmartin (Redwood city ca)

Al Davis put together a young team do u feel this us the start of a dynasty

Bill Williamson
  (2:58 PM)

A dynasty? Let's start by winning six games.

James (Kansas)

Is Jason Campbell a game changer or a game manager? I mean he was 8-8 with a great running game and a top 5 D in Washington in 08.

Bill Williamson
  (2:59 PM)

Manager.He's Ok. Not great.

Randy (Grove, OK)

Does Eric Berry have the ability to be a true game changer at safety the way guys like Ed Reed and Troy Palamalu are?

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

I'm not sure he's going to be in the company of the greats, but I really like Berry. I thik he's going to be a nice player.

TJ (Maryland)

Hey Billy, who will be the breakout player for each team in the AFC West (duh!) this year?

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

That's my column tomorrow.

Rick Oliver (Springfield)

I have V jack and Moreno as keepers in my Fantasy league. How much trouble am I in?

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

Maybe a little bit.

Bill Williamson
  (3:01 PM)

Great hour, folks. I'm on vvacation the next two weeks. Next time we talk it'll be training camp time. Be safe and have fun.
