Let's get this party started
You gonna check out Entourage with Jerry Jones making a guest appearance? I think it will air Sunday at 10:30 ET.
Never miss Entourage. Great show. Can't say that JJ's appearance will make a bit of difference to me. Got to hope Ari lands the contract though! Hug it out.
Giants, Ravens, Dolphins, Sttelers......in order which team from highest % to lowest % of getting to the Super Bowl this year and also which team has the best window of opportunity the next few years
1. Balt 2. Giants 3. Steelers 4. Miami. I am actually probably pick the Ravens to make it to the Super Bowl. I was very torn between #2 and
Do you think shady mccoy will put up big numbers this year?
Decent, but I kind of expect him to let people down just a bit. Remember, he came out of school at a very young age-still has some maturing to do as a runner and physically. How well does he assimilate to the passing game? Protection? Those things are not easy-and they are an absolute must for that O. He isn't much of a short yardage guy and I still think he needs to learn that not every run can go for a TD. Oftentimes at this level, a RB just needs to get what is there and live to fight another day.
Matty Dub, do you think it's wise for the Giants to even consider using Aaron Ross as a returner? He's one of their best DBs and that's obviously a very important position. I just remember Jason Sehorn wrecking his knee returning kicks and he never really recovered from that.
He obviously is important-esp in a division that looks to be throwing a lot. But he is their #3 CB-not a true starter. Do you think he is even the clear cut best guy for the job? If so, put him back there, but if it is even debatable, I say you don't. Understand your concern though-it isn't like the guy is Deion.
Hey Matt, with the additions of Trent"silverback"Williams and Jamaal Brown can u finally give the Redskins some respect please!
Big moves for sure. Yes, that OL has to be better. Dockery is a good player and they should now be serviceable at OC and RG. Can't argue that. As a rule of thumb though, I can't say I like the way Washington (or Shanny of late) does biz with the constant trading of draft picks for vets. I also think that McNabb is overrated. I hate their RBs. Their WRs are average on a good day. 4th in the NFC East.
M-Dubb, I've really converted my wife into a football fan. Am I livin' the hi life??
Be careful what you wish for! My wife doesn't know a thing about football...which is the way I like it. James, yours and mine situation might be a little different though.
how upset are u that Gonchar didnt sign with the Pens?
I don't know enough about the new defensemen, but like in the NFL, I think it is best to get off a player a year too early than a year too late. In this case, the Pens got tougher, more defensive minded and much younger. Tough to complain.
Do you think the Eagles front seven will be able to make up for their lack of depth in their secondary?
It is a worry. If I am Dallas (for example), I come out in 11 personnel (1 RB/1 TE) all day. Force the Eagles to put lesser players on the field while their front seven guys hold their helmet on the sidelines.
But-I do agree that the Eagles' front seven is much improved. A lot of tweener type pass rushers. I really like Graham. But S Bradley coming back is the key-assuming he is healthy.
More likely to leave once their contracts next year: Brady or Manning? And what are their likely post-NFl paths---media, coaching or none of the above?
Those two will have SO much money when they retire, I would bet their path is the beach or just flat out easy livin'. Not sure who will get done first, but I have no doubt that neither is leaving. Would prob make the 2nd one much easier after the first one signs. BTW-expecting both to have monster seasons.
Why wouldnt you want your wife to like/know football??
I don't want Ed HULKali to have to throw a flag on her for interference.
Dubbster, while many of the divisional bolggers sit out a week or more worth of chats here for vacations, you keep going strong. Big ups to the Chat King. Dubb don't need no stinkin' break!!!!
Got that right Brother. Actually taking a week off in about two weeks though. I know. I know. I am a slacker. Honesty time-that is my first real vacation since I joined ESPN...been a while!
Why does Peyton Manning play significantly worse in the postseason than in the regular season? With the ridiculous amount of money he makes, can't he afford anti-anxiety drugs to deal with the pressure?!
First off, it is more difficult. You are playing against better teams. I personally don't worry about Manning one bit in the big game. Did he play poorly this past post season? I didn't think so. Best football player in the world.
Why are the bills not pursing Troy Smith. Edwards, Fitzpatrick and Brohm are not the Answer. For what little it would cost you to get Smith why not?
Seems like a no brainer to me as well. Maybe that is why they are now the worst franchise in the NFL.
Who is Brady going to throw to? Moss is overrated and takes plays off, Welker may not play at all, Edelman is young.
Moss isn't overrated, but his pension for taking plays off is overrated. He is a superstar. Let's say Welker doesn't play, I still like the combination of Tate on the edge (maybe Holt, but he doesn't do it for me any more) and Edelman and or Hernandez out of the slot. Brady wasn't Brady last year. Broken ribs. Broken finger. Recovering from a bad knee injury. He will make them all better. 2nd best player on the planet.
Do you think letting go of Justin Fargis and making Darren Mcfadden starting RB is a smart move for the raiders?
Fargas doesn't matter. He is Just A Guy. Extremely replaceable. He is still a free agent, isn't he? But I don't like McF either. The mistake was drafting McF.
Broncos are relying on quite a few rookies to step up and be starters this year. A couple on the O-line and a couple receivers all pretty much drafted to start. Seems like high expectations especially for some positions that really take some time to adjust from collee to pro. What do you think?
Agreed. And on the DL, they are relying on aging vets. Doesn't seem like this team has enough guys in their prime. I expect the O to be terrible. Don't like the QB. Moreno should improve, but he will face FAR more loaded fronts with Marshall out of town.
If a trade for Vincent Jackson does take place what team and players would give the Chargers the best push?
If I am SD and trade V-Jax, I would really want a WR of quality back to help in 2010. Lee Evans? TJ WhosYourMama? Not sure what the best fit is, but I think there should be plenty of teams lined up for V-Jax. A few off the top of my head: Sea, Oak, Buff, Hous, PGH, Clev, SF
Obviously you picking Baltimore for the SB (probably) means you give them the AFC North. Do they run away from everyone or can Pitt or Cincy stay close enough to nab a wild card?
I think those two stay very close. That is one of the few reasons that give me pause about picking the Ravens. Those four games on each of their schedules where Cincy/PGH/Balt all play one another will be absolutely crucial.
How can u say McNabb is overrated?it just doesn't make any sense
I think he is vast upgrade over Campbell, who I like, but I do not think he is an elite QB. Doesn't throw his receivers open. Struggles in the red zone. Average accuracy. Has fallen apart when it matters most. Can be too conservative. Good-not great.
What's the likelihood that a team OTHER than the Colts wins the AFC South this year?
I am picking the Colts-no doubt. I still consider them undefeated during the 2009 regular season. But what odds would you give the field? 50/50 that Indy wins the division? Better than that? 60/40?
Peyton Manning's career regular season QB rating is 95.2. His playoff QB rating is 87.6, against far superior competition. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Terry.
He's really good.
With most of the diva wide receivers winding down their careers, who do you think will be their successor? I say DeSean Jackson. Have you ever heard this guy interviewed? He's oblivious to the concept of modesty.
Good call. A few more will surely come out of the wood work! Dez?
I realize we still have a lot of work to do with personel and selling some tickets, but what do you think of the additions Jacksonville has made this offseason?
I expect the O to be noticeably improved-esp with the OL. The OTs will be in year 2 and they have to stay healthier on the interior. Plus they added Smiley, which should help. That could go a long way, as Garrard needs the supporting cast. I also like some of the youngsters like Miller and especially Thomas. I hope Kampman is healthy-that would go a long way. Improved team, but not a contender. And also not real equipped to deal with a big injury at any position.
How about a trade for some defensive help for V-Jax??
I do think that is needed. Not a fan at all of SD's D, which is why I don't consider them a big time contender-even with McNeal and V-Jax. But who is on the market?
do you like pro or college FB better? Imma college guy
Being a part of a college team was a blast. So much tradition, legacy and spirit. Kids are so enthusiastic and learning. But to me, it isn't even close. NFL all the way.
Do you think the additions of Mike Williams and Arrelious Benn will help open the field up enough for Cadillac Williams to find some holes? Or do you think that the O-line will squash any chance of establishing a balanced attack?
That OL REALLY let TBay down last year. It has the ability to really improve though. Guys like Penn and Joseph are better than how they played in 2009. TBay is now going heavy West Coast, which I like with those bigger WRs who run after the catch real well-not sure how well a true WC O fits Freeman though. I want to see him drop back and really sling it downfield.
Vincent Jackson for Albert Haynesworth?
Same problem though-Big Al doesn't want to play in a 3-4.
Another Boys question do you think Felix is ready to take the next step(especially with the weight gain) maybe a pour mans Chris Johnson?
Yes. Big believer in Jones. Potential for greatness. There are not THAT many RBs in this league that you can say that about. Very high ceiling. Can he stay healthy? Who knows.
Should Pete Carroll get fined, or a lawsuit or something? I mean, what captain jumps a sinking ship?
I don't have the answer/remedy, but that is certainly a huge flaw/loop hole in the system.
MW: Whatever happened to Benjamin Watson? He made one of the most amazing plays I've ever seen (knocking Champ Bailey out of bounds at the 2 yrd line on a 100 yard INT return). I thought he was going to be a top TE in this league.
I actually expect him to revitalize his career this season in Cleveland. Some one has to catch the ball there! He is very talented, but NEng never really featured the TE and he has too many drops. Think Brady didn't trust him. But don't sleep on him this year on a new team.
The Lions are talking up Jahvid Best as an every down or workhorse sort of guy. Wouldn't that be a huge mistake?
Not a Doc, but I would certainly want to make sure that his concussions were not an issue. But-I see a LOT of MJD in this young man and he has held up very well. He isn't small. He is short. Still, I do think ideally that you have a hammer type (who isn't on the roster prob right now) as a guy to take some of the load off him.
Week 1 KC vs SD who wins???
Whoa...we are not doing that in July. No way.
Love your chats man, Can the Vikes hold off the Pack in the North (of course with Favre)?
That division is brutal. I am really high on Chicago too as my sleeper come from no where team. Detroit has to be improved. Real coin flip between GBay and Minny to me. Give me the Vikes, but they are very even to me. However, neither team did a ton this off season to drastically improve-although I like GBay's OL much better than in 2009.
Ravens better than the Giants, no way! Giants had a safety shortage and a damaged D line last year....their O line was hurt too 4.1 yds. per carry vs. 5 the year before. One thing about the Gmen is they deliver what everyone doubts them.....They improve in the trenches this year all the way to Dallas in the SB.
Big on NYG as well here. Just higher on the Ravens.
Falcons are gonna win the super bowl. just so you know.
Starting to really get excited about the Falcons too. One year ago, I actually picked them for the Super Bowl-it didn't happen. But, I like this team. The D has to be better. I wish I could pick 7 teams in the NFC for the post season.
Do the Browns have a shot at making the playoffs this year and will Mangini be out regardless of the season record?
I don't think they have any shot at the playoffs and I expect them to have one of the very worst passing games in the NFL.
What can the Patriots get for Mankins at this point? High second?
Really good player, but that seems a little rich for me considering how little most vets have gone for this off season. It wasn't really disclosed, but I would say he is comparable to J Brown to Washington.
Hey Matt. Cowboys winning 12 games. You taking the Over or Under?
Prob picking Dallas vs. Balt in the Super Bowl, but I will go UNDER. Just think there is a better chance that they win 11 as opposed to 13 in that division.
M-Dub, say Kolb does his best A. Rodgers impression this year...do they grab a wild card, or is it a lot more than just the performance of the unknown that's holding you back?
I like Philly and I really like Kolb, just think they are a smidge behind teams like ATL, NYG and GBay who are all my considerations for the two Wild Card spots. Wouldn't shock me at all though if the Eagles won 10 games.
It's the middle of November...who's starting QB in Charlotte? Cantwell right...I kid, I kid...
Moore. I like Moore. The guy can play.
Suprise team of the year?
Mentioned Chicago, but wow, that division is brutal. ATL sorta counts I guess. Otherwise, I don't see one today.
I understand that McNabb isn't elite. Would he be in a second "tier" of QB's?
I suppose. Okay, let's do this. RIGHT NOW-who is a better QB than McNabb? Off the top of my head, here is my list-give me a min:
Brady, Roethlisberger, Peyton, Schaub, Rivers in the AFC-can't give Palmer or Flacco.
Romo, Eli, Favre, Rodgers, Cutler, Brees in the NFC...can't give Ryan
Dont u dare say Romo!!!
Would take Romo every day of the week over McNabb..and twice on Sundays
Do you think the Browns win 7 games this year? Decent defense, good O-line, vet qb, seems like a 6-7 win team.
But no passing game. Enough D playmakers? Enough depth to handle an injury or two? I see a 4 or 5 win team.
If you predict a suprise team are they really a suprise?
Exactly. On the other end, I see Houston disappointing.
Eagles think Kolb is better than McNabb.
Indeed and I bet I will a year from now, but I can't say that right now.
M-Dub the expectations are high for the Texans to finally make the playoffs, yet I'm wondering will their secondary hold up?
Just not sure why they are better this year than last. The secondary is a big part of that. Is Cushing the same player when he plays by the rules? Why is the running game going to be so much improved? What is Schuab goes down again? I still don't trust his durability.
Cutler has elite 'tools', but the body of work is very, very far from elite. Let me inside your head, Matt, why is he comparable to those other NFC guys?
That is the one that I knew would draw your ire. I get it. And frankly, RIGHT NOW, I probably can't say Cutler on that list. But I am big time believer. I would rather have Cutler. Physically, he is amazing. But I love his toughs. Wants the ball when it matters most.
Does Favre come back and if so what kind of season do you predict for him and the Vikings?
Yes, and very strong. HAVE to think his INT numbers will increase though. He still is Brett Favre and will throw INTs. I just really worry about him down the stretch any more. He crumbles late in the year. His body just doesn't seem like it can take it. But he is so incredibly tough that he just keeps going out there game after game after game. Side note: Do me a favor and look up his life time completions. Imagine dropping back, releasing the football out of your hand and having it caught THAT many times. Remarkable.
Five best pass-blocking OT's...J.Thomas, J.Long, Clady, D'Brick, and Gaither?
Hard to argue with that list. Thomas would be #1 for me. Nice work.
Cutler may want the ball when it matters most, but would you want to give it to him. Not a good decision maker. Tries to hit too many tight windows and breaks most of them. Agree/Disagree?
He did last year, but I really blame his supporting cast/protection as much as I blame him in 2009. Those end zone INTs are not forgivable though-and it happened way too often. I think he lost his MoJo in a way-but I trust him to get it back. Maybe I am nuts on this guy, but I am huge Cutler fan.
Jets = Bravado, bluster and B.S. and in love with their headlines, or legitimate SB team? I believe the former. Thoughts?
The former. Not good enough at QB. OL can't play as well in 2010 as it did in 2009.
Where does VJax belong on a list of top wideouts?
In the Top 10. This time last year I did that list and had him #10. A lot has changed, but his stock has only gone up since that point.
M dubs you just used my fav line in the world everyday of the week n twice on Sundays-great minds think a like there's a difference from being a fan and being knowledgable of football I can tell you have both keep up the good work enjoy your blogs!
Much appreciated, but being a "Fan" gets harder and harder for me. Not like this is brutal work, but staying impartial is an absolute must. Still, Fandom is my roots...can't forget your roots.
Is there a bigger redskin hater then you?
Maybe not. And they have been so successful lately too!
Will the Bills win 6+ games this season? I am thinking about 4 but GO BILLS!!!!
UNDER 6...will bet the mortgage on that one. 0-6 in the division makes getting to seven wins awfully tough.
Is the NFC East the best division top to bottom in the NFL?
Would prob lean that way. Impressed with the AFC North and East too, but their bottom dwellers are worse than the Skins. NFC North is quite strong too.
FF Question: Would you rather have Best w/ a 5th round pick or Mathews with an early third? I am going with Best...
Hmmm...I guess I agree with that. V-Jax's situation doesn't really help a rookie RB. Neither does McNeal's!
Romo? really? what has he done but choke?
Can't you say the exact same thing about McNabb?
5 yard penalty on Larry (New York) for whining about the chatter "being a hater." Repeat third down.
Thanks Ed. No hating here. Wouldn't bother me one bit if Washington went 19-0 this year...except it would make me look like I didn't know what I was talking about. No hate though.
How many superbowls do either of them have? Point made.
Exactly. I don't think SBs are the only criteria...like the Eli vs. Rivers debate. I would rather have Rivers, but yes, I do know that Eli won a SB and Rivers did not.
You know you bobble one snap to win a playoff game and you're branded for life!
I like that though
How can a star running back in the NFL Adrian Petersen fumble the ball so many times and just not seem to care. Are they not taught to tuck the ball away in pop warner football
I bet he cares. Ever watch that guy run? He competes. Wants to win very badly. I bet he cares. The large gentlemen who run into you in the NFL are a little more daunting than those at the Pop Warner level.
Yes, the Super Bowl criteria. I've always favored Trent Dilfer over Dan Marino (face palm)....
Exactly-sort of a short cut to thinking. Of course it has to be considered, but it is a team game.
Folks, I am out. Great chat. Next week we will do it again! Adios.
