Fantasy Baseball w/AJ Mass

AJ Mass
  (11:00 AM)

Good morning and Happy 6th of July! We've got an hour of fantasy chattage ahead on this hot day - close to 100 degrees where I'm sitting right now. Second glass of lemonade in hand... who is up first?

Good morning and Happy 6th of July! We've got an hour of fantasy chattage ahead on this hot day - close to 100 degrees where I'm sitting right now. Second glass of lemonade in hand... who is up first?

Andrew McCutchen (Pittsburg, PA)

Am I looking like a top 25 pick for the 2011 fantasy Draft? Too bad I wasn't selected for the All Star lineup, while Bourn and Byrd were. What's up with that? I feel for Car-Go, too.

AJ Mass
  (11:02 AM)

I voted for McCutchen to be a starter in the OF, just ahead of Car-Go. It happens sometimes - as Bourn was the Astros rep. It's not that big a deal in the long run.

Pete (Portland)

I keep getting mundane results from Jeter while Aybar sits on my bench. Would you play Aybar over Jetes at this time, at least for the short-term?

AJ Mass
  (11:03 AM)

I'll confess that Jeter isn't exactly lighting the world on fire, but he's still IMO the best AL SS option for fantasy right now.

John (Tampa, FL)

AJ, I know trade vetoes are typically not something you support, but what about the situation where a players status changes mid trade? A manager in my league made an offer for Choo on Saturday. Choo went on the DL mid day Sunday and the second manager accepted immediately after. Should this deal get shot down?

AJ Mass
  (11:06 AM)

If you know the owner accepted the deal simply because the status of a player has changed, then that is a good reason to veto. We're not talking a buyer beware situation where the deal is agreed upon, and then during a "veto window" an injury occurs -- that's the way the cookie crumbles in those cases. But if an owner is jumping on a deal simply because he guy got hurt - veto.

spoiled rotten (dix hills, ny)

is omar inf-whatever even having a good season.is he a 10 team mixed league guy

AJ Mass
  (11:08 AM)

Stunned would be putting it mildly. He's got a decent average, but an All-Star? No way. I might not own him in a 12-team NL league, let alone mixed.

Mitch D (Work, PA)

Hey AJ, what's filling your LOST hole these days? More importantly, will Matt Wieters ever become the great catcher so many people thought he'd be?

AJ Mass
  (11:10 AM)

For the summer, there's not much. I'm always watching Big Brother, but little else. Wieters will be a solid MLB catcher for years to come, and defensively, he'll be more than OK... but will he ever be Joe Mauer? No.

Steve (VA)

Time to cut bait on Pelfrey?

AJ Mass
  (11:11 AM)

Because he had one bad start? Sheesh! It's a long season. He's not 10-1 good, but he's not going to finish 10-10 either. Chill.

JoJo (Richmond)

Would you rather have Ubaldo Jimenez or Josh Johnson for the rest of the season?

AJ Mass
  (11:13 AM)

Josh Johnson, but that's kind of like asking if I want Federer as my doubles partner or Nadal.

Jordan (Chambana)

In a bubble: Howie Kendrick for Carlos Quentin: who wins?

AJ Mass
  (11:14 AM)

Kendrick, but it's a fair comparison.

Jordan (Peoria)

Lost Pedroia...I have Sean Rodriquez and Ian Stewart to fill in. Do I need to be more aggressive and look for a better option or wait it out on Pedroia and keep a 1st place team intact?

AJ Mass
  (11:15 AM)

I think if better options abound, go ahead and pursue... but I'm not standing pat with Pedroia out for that long.

Gilbert N. (Asheville, NC)

Do you foresee Angel Pagan losing at bats when Beltran returns?

AJ Mass
  (11:16 AM)

There's no room at the in if Beltran is back. 3-4 games a week at most for Pagan -- once Carlos proves he can go every day.

Tom Tuttle (Tacoma)

Did you see the play in the Mets-Reds game on which Manuel got tossed? How does a second base umpire get to overrule the home plate ump on whether a pitch nicked (and I mean, nicked) a batter's forearm? He's 100+ feet away! Ridiculous!

AJ Mass
  (11:18 AM)

You can't have it both ways... either the umpires conference and discuss, OR they stubbornly hold fast to their decision and refuse to admit they might have missed something. I'm all for the conference.

Aaron Heilman (The Desert)

Am I still the best DBack reliever to own?

AJ Mass
  (11:19 AM)

Not a lot of other choices...

Bryan (Montclair, NJ)

Non-keeper, should I drop Baker for Hammel?

AJ Mass
  (11:21 AM)

I'm still in the Baker camp right now. Ask me again in a few weeks, and we'll see where we are...

Nate (Maryland)

Dan Haren when will he start pitching like himself i know he doesnt have much of a team playing behind him. But do you think a change of scenery will change his playing i mean hes hitting the ball pretty well just not pitching it all that well.

AJ Mass
  (11:23 AM)

I really think Haren has been fine - a few more wins would be nice, and a few less balls going over the fence, too -- but I for one am not expecting the 2nd half to be a horrific one for him. This is the year he flips the script.

Matt (Indianapolis)

I have Choo and looking for a replacement. What do you think of Dexter Fowler and his value this season?

AJ Mass
  (11:24 AM)

I think the steals will be there, but I'm not necessarily sold on Fowler as the best possible option. Obviously, each league's wire is different, but Dexter's not too high on my overall list.

Jeff (Atlanta, GA)

AJ, please give me your honest opinion on Brandon Morrow going forward. I had picked him up to replace an injured Chad Billingsley, and because he was pitching so well, I dropped Billingsley when he came back. Did I do something stupid?

AJ Mass
  (11:26 AM)

I think they are essentially the same pitcher for fantasy purposes right now, and if Morrow can somehow get the control even a little bit more in check, his value will surpass the Buzzsaw's.

Dave (Boston)

Stubbs or Posey, non-keeper?

AJ Mass
  (11:27 AM)

Stubbs.

Sean (Salt Lake)

Aybar or Figgins?

AJ Mass
  (11:27 AM)

Aybar.

Eric (PHX)

Is it time to drop Granderson in a 12 team mixed league or do you have to keep faith with that lineup?

AJ Mass
  (11:29 AM)

I don't think the lineup is an issue... it's the .225 average from Granderson himself. Mixed leagues, you certainly have to be open to the idea of getting someone else...

Josh (DC)

I'm new to H2H format and I need some prep talk for the playoffs. How should I try and shape my team with the playoffs in mind?

AJ Mass
  (11:30 AM)

Eyeball where your strengths and weaknesses are on a weekly basis. Are you always winning one category by a lot, and losing one by a lot? Fix it. Also, if you have a lot of pitchers who are likely to be shut down early due to pitch counts... trade them for value sooner rather than later.

Eric (Chicago)

AJ, what is your honest opinion of Chris Young (OF)? I've actually been trying to trade him while his value is high, but people keep telling me he's a bum. I'm in 2nd place in my league and those that tell me he stinks are in the latter half of the league...shows them, right?

AJ Mass
  (11:32 AM)

No question Young has been a top-25 player this season -- but value is never what you think a player is, or even what the stats say -- it's always what the person you are trading him for says. If they say he's a bum, you are only going to get bum value for him, and therefore, you don't have a chance to trade him.

Vince (MA)

Any thoughts on Joey Votto not getting in on the all star game?

AJ Mass
  (11:34 AM)

I think he will get into the All-Star Game, so there's that. As long as there's a fan vote involved in the process, there are going to be huge snubs. Votto is my No. 11 player right now, so yes, he should be on the roster... but am I going to lose sleep over it? Not one second. In the end, it really does not matter.

Todd (PA)

Max Scherzer is a top _____ pitcher from here on out?

AJ Mass
  (11:35 AM)

75

Greg (New Braunfels)

Is Wandy turning it around or just drawing us into his trap?

AJ Mass
  (11:36 AM)

You know that part of the horror movie where everyone relaxes just a bit and says, "It's over..."?

James (Houston)

Bourn or Byrd the rest of the way?

AJ Mass
  (11:37 AM)

Bourn, but only b/c of the SB.

db (nyc)

In a dyson vacuum cleaner, Markakis or Hughes?

AJ Mass
  (11:38 AM)

Markakis, because in a vaccum, hitters always have slightly elevated value.

Mark (NY NY)

Stephen Drew or Cliff Pennington?

AJ Mass
  (11:39 AM)

Cliff.

Matt (Franklin, TN)

AJ - Owner questionI'm in a league where ridiculous trades are going through and it's getting frustrating and a team has already quit because of it. Trades like Cueto for Ryan Howard or Uggla and Cory Hart for Ricky Weeks and Longoria. Do I let this happen or put an end to it and how?

AJ Mass
  (11:42 AM)

If you play in a league where trades are allowed, you have to allow them. Period. I don't think the second one is all that bad, and while I wouldn't deal Howard for Cueto -- he is 8-2, it's not like he's 2-8. You have to let owners own their teams, otherwise, draft ten teams by yourself and see which one wins.

Albert (The Arch)

Who is your 2nd half sleeper? And who is your 2nd half "most likely to turn it around" player?

AJ Mass
  (11:45 AM)

It's hard to say, simply because the whole sleeper term is overused and under-defined. I like Jaso to continue to play well. I like Gavin Floyd to have a strong second half. Does that make them sleepers? I don't know.

Craig Giovannetti (Fairfield, CA)

Hey AJ, what is your outlook for Shane Victorino and Jimmy Rollins for the rest of the season? Who has the biggest upside and potential?

AJ Mass
  (11:46 AM)

With around five more hits, Shane Victorino is Ryan Braun with five fewer hits.

Taylor (Ok)

who are you selling before they tank in the 2nd half?

AJ Mass
  (11:49 AM)

Scotty Pods, Denard Span, Jose Reyes, Ervin Santana, Ubaldo and Pelfrey -- simply b/c the value is not going to be higher for the last two arms -- I still think both win 7-8 from hereon out, but I can possibly get a guy who wins 5-6 and a hitter in exchange for them.

Ricky (FLA)

Am I going to have a monster second half this year now that I woke up from my early summer nap?

AJ Mass
  (11:50 AM)

Top 30 and rising, Mr. Nolasco.

Steve (orlando)

Ian Kennedy or Jonathan Niese?

AJ Mass
  (11:51 AM)

If you're making me pick one, I go with the Met.

Jamie (Savannah, Ga)

The difference between Nolasco and Scherzer is really 45 spots?

AJ Mass
  (11:54 AM)

The problem with ranking starting pitching is the fact that Wins are 25 percent of the value in most formats (since starters don't get saves). I do factor in more than that in my rankings to try and get a better feel of the difference between pitchers, but if there are 45 pitchers within a win or two of each other, then Nolasco's walk totals go a long way in moving that spread further.

Phil (Madison)

Which is closer to the real Wigginton? Monster start or 1-for-31 stretch?

AJ Mass
  (11:55 AM)

Borderline starter in 10-team mixed.

Alex (NYC)

Jaime Garcia- worth a keeper spot, or will he be mediocre now that the league is figuring him out ?

AJ Mass
  (11:56 AM)

He's a No. 4 fantasy starter right now. Don't worry about keepers until you're eliminated from 2010.

Scott (Boston, MA)

With Dice-k's continued Nibbling and inconsistency, is he worth keeping on a 10-team points league? What do you see from him going forward?

AJ Mass
  (11:57 AM)

Unless walks are a positive category for your pitchers, stay far far away.

Barnabas (Sacramento)

Jake Fox was hitting well this past week with his new club - think he keeps up a decent level of production?

AJ Mass
  (11:58 AM)

Not holding my breath.

Dan (Detroit)

Tulo fill in: Alexei Ramirez, Stephen Drew, or Pennington

AJ Mass
  (11:59 AM)

Already answered part of this query, but I'd place Alexei in third.

Cameron (Salt Lake)

Stubbs and Strasburg VS. Ichiro and Dickey. Which side do you like more?

AJ Mass
  (12:00 PM)

Give me the Ichiro side.

AJ Mass
  (12:00 PM)

That's the final bell, gang. Hope you're keeping cool, wherever you are. We'll be back next week same bat time, same bat channel. Until then, Be seeing you!
