Hey everyone and welcome to Day 5! We've already lost 60 players in the first 45 minutes and there doesn't seem to be any sign of this thing slowing down. Send in your questions, let's get started!
Anymore bad beats like the runner runner kings for 4 of a kind to beat a flopped straight the other day?
The first level has really been full of coolers, not bad beats. Shannon Shorr was the latest elimination after flopping a set of 10s and running into a set of kings. Brutal.
Always so much talk about Ivey being the best isnt it time everyone starts giving some consideration to Scotty Nguyen this guy has had some amazing results and is making another run at the Main Event.
I don't think anyone discounts Scotty at all, but in terms of overall success, Ivey definitely has the edge. Scotty's deep run is already impressive and with each elimination it only gets better.
I'm running late. Consoling Lauren Kling on her bustout.
She gone. Paul Ellis just said there are only eight women left in the field. Kenny Tran must be happy hearing that as he's got some good money on the line that there wouldn't be a woman in the top 25
Jason Lester still in the Main Event?
Yes he is! Plugging along, always just collected at the table. I had a a chance to speak to him yesterday and were were talking about his main event accomplishments. He really runs well in this tournament.
When will ESPN put the WSOP events on the air
July 20th is the preview show and the main event begins on August 10
Andrew, any more news on Bernard Lee, since his double up early on?
He got moved to a tough table and has been patient since. Stack is about 75K.
Scotty wins this and it's Hall of Fame for sure baby!
what celebs are still playing?
Bruce Buffer is still alive in the tournament.
Was hoping Shannon would make it, I think his story is a good one. What remaining pro has the best story? (Please don't say Bobby Bellande)
I think there are a bunch with great stories: Jason Mercier, Johnny Chan, Scotty Nguyen, Phil Galfond, Alexander Kostritsyn too. There are a lot of familiar faces left in this crowd and we'll know more about who to focus on by the end of today.
He said celebrities.
Just before he announces all in, can you get Bruce Buffer to say "Let's get ready to Rummmmbleeeeeee!" It'll be infinitely more entertaining than "all you can eat baby" or "deee Shark is hungry."
how many players are left? are we in the money yet?
We made the money last night (747 players) and now we have hit the 500-player mark.
Is the guy that was barking all the time still alive? Any other goofy characters around?
Can I get an update on my husband (Scotty)...with how you are doing this, I'm out of updates for Scotty's Twitter:( LOL
Hi Julie! I haven't been to Scotty's table in the last 20 minutes, but he's still over 600K
Who is at the feature table? Secondary?
Phil Galfond is at the feature table and Adam Levy and Vanessa Selbst are at secondary.
Over/under 45 minutes when Bernard Lee is knock out?
Over. He's really just looking for optimal spots. He has no problem blinding down until he finds one.
Bob, it's not shark - it's "charrrrrrrrrk". Wait, the cameras weren't around to hear me say that? Never mind.
FWIW, your twitter updates are about 50x faster than Pokernews updates. Keep it going!
Thanks Jason. Appreciate it.
how are all th dealers holding up with all the addd pressure...any big F@#& Ups................
Honestly, just a few mistakes and none weren't really that major. They have done a great job. In general, the whole WSOP has really been controversy-free on that level.
Can you arrange an hour special with Lauren Kling?
I think she's a must have for a future ESPN Inside Deal
Isn't Marlon Shirley, the Paralympic Star, still kicking? That would make for a great story.
Yep. We covered Shirley's story here last year: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/poker/columns/story?columnist=wise_gary&id=4306145). He doesn't have a huge stack right now, but still fighting.
How are the cash games at the Rio doing? Still going strong or fading away?
Fading away. All play is back in the actual Rio Poker room. The Pavilion is closed for business.
I would give Mercier pretty good chances to make a really deep run in this one, maybe FT!!
He's running like Ivey right now and I'll be honest, the hands you'll see him play from Day 4 will make the general poker population ask if he's luckier than Joe Cada was at the final table last year.
Any update on Johnny Lodden? With 500 left or so how many big name players could you honestly see making the final table this year?
I think if we get 2 it wouldn't surprise me. 3 is a stretch though....
So I gather that both Cantu and Losev are still around. If only they could be at the same table again. Actual question - how come the WSOP doesn't employ translators to have on hand? As much as it looked like Losev was shooting an angle, you alsmot had to feel sorry for him after a while when it was clear he had no idea what the tournament director was saying.
There were over 100 nations represented this year...it would be impossible to have a full staff able to translate for every player. Definitely not cost effective.
What are you saying Andrew, that Vince Van Patten is no longer a celebrity?
You've got a point.
Watching WSOP ME reruns on ESPN last night and heard Norman talking about someone getting her pocket AA mucked by the dealer, can you explain what happened?
I believe that was last year. A player moved all-in and the dealer accidentally mucked her cards.
Has Bernard Lee ever not had the best hand when he gets it in? Crazy how patient he can be.
I don't believe it's ever happened.
Obviously you are working you're tail off on the chat and twitter simultaneously. Who's helping you out? Laura Lane? The other Andrew Feldman?
I've got both up, but ESPN Inside Deal Producer Eric Pierce came up and told me about Mr. Lee's double.
Who's winning the battle of the patches? Is Stars blowing them away or is FT putting up a fight?
I actually heard something interesting this morning which could have created a couple more players in the field. If you wear the logos of either Stars or Tilt all the way through, and you make the money, there's additional incentives. If your a stars qualifier and get in the money, they'll give you a free PCA trip. If you're a tilt qualifier, you get a free seat next year. That said, I think Tilt is winning the war right now.
Sicker as of today: Ted Forrest or Mike Matusow?
Forrest. He got down to 138 pounds and I heard he didn't eat anything for the last 9 days.
Is there another payout dropoff that players are waiting for or is it a relatively gradual increase ?
The pay structure is really gradual and the next one will occur at 460th
I really like the addition of the the overhead cam videos in the blog and in the articles, but quite a few of them cut off before they are complete. Anyone working to fix this?
The All360Poker team is aware of the issue and they're currently debugging. Thanks for the good words, though.
Are Forrest and Matusow having a bet? Please Explain.
There was a $2 million bet between Mike Matusow and Ted Forrest that said that Forrest couldn't get to under 139 pounds by July 15th. Well, the sicko did it.
Did Greenstein make it through to day 5? Didn't see him listed in the day 4 blog.
He was knocked out right before the bubble.
Last year we had a huge name (Ivey) and a very interesting story (Darvin) make for great tv during their run to the FT. Do you think ESPN needs Chan at the FT for interest sake? And are there any Darvin-esque stories making a run right now?
There are plenty of Darvin-esque stories that are out there right now....and to be honest, we haven't heard all of them yet. I don't think we need Johnny, but we do need at least one familiar face in the industry.
If they had even stacks, who is better equiped for a November 9 run, Scotty or Johnny?
Johnny. Strangely enough, I think he has more to prove...
Update on the Mizrachi trio that's still alive?
Danny, Rob and Grinder are all still alive.
Out of nowhere, the field is going on a 20-minute break.
How is Eric Baldwin doing so far?
Around 500K. Didn't have a great start to the first level of the day.
Does the casino break a payout to someone who cashes with backers among the backers or does the group have to figure it out (taxes) themselves? Any info on the best way to do this would be great! Go Roper!
The casino has no part of the backer/player association. Everything is handled outside of the WSOP floor and finding a good accountant is the best place to start.
Do you think if Mori Eskandani makes the final table or even wins that he would put himself on High Stakes or Poker After Dark?
Have you ever interacted with Tony Dunst aka Bond18 before? Seems like quite an entertaining character.
I have not, but I plan to by the end of the day.
Do the players who cash tip the dealers or are they compinsated by the Casino?
Tips come from the players, but those tips are pooled and split among everyone who has dealt. Dealers are also receiving a regular salary from the casino.
In your opinion is Jason Mercier the best NL Holdem player left in the ME?
I don't think so. Mercier has been on an amazing run but there are a lot of other proven players still left in this field. This is going to sound strange with Scotty and Johnny still left, but one of the best NL players in the field that's left is Michael Mizrachi.
Vince Van Patten is gone. Just saw that update. Buffer too.
a double up then another for Lee, you got a chip count and blind level?
Lost a pot right before break, down to 100K again
Do you really think Matusow has $2 million in cash? I really doubt that.
Can you recall which feature table throughout the main event will be the most interesting episode to watch on espn when the main even airs?
I think the Day 4 feature tables were awesome. At the end of the night Scotty Nguyen and the Grinder were seated together...
Does Bernard Lee kiss a picture of his ESPN family before each hand he plays?
Only before he goes all-in.
Wouldn't the best #goodforpoker story (copyright Andrew Feldman) be Vanessa Selbst making the N9? Female, bracelet/NAPT winner, alternative lifestyle, very interesting back story, incredibly articulate, etc.
Absolutely right. Here's the problem though: she might not get there. Her style is so erratic that she gains and loses lots of chips all the time. She's not conservative and won't fold into the final table, so even if she's a big stack with a few more eliminations before the N9, her spot there would be anything but a lock.
Looks like mercier just dropped a 700k pot Rob Mizrachi... sicknes.. looks like his day 4 luck isn't going to last.. is he a tilter... or will he be able to grind it up?
He's probably going to just shove and hope for a 60-40. I'm expecting a double up or bust within the next 30 minutes.
What is the amount of the first payout? $15,000?
The min cash was $19K
Andrew, you seem to have a negative vibe about Mercier, is there any particular reason? From the sounds of it, you think he's just "been running really well"?
Not at all! I think Jason is an unbelievable player and one of the best in the world, but even he will admit that his Day 4 was filled with hands that he could only dream of.
Are all these "Prop" bets available thru the casino or do these players only bet amonst themselves not the Mike and Ted bet, but others
I don't think that the casinos offer any prop bets like the ones poker players get themselves in to.
Over/Under: 10lbs of Jack Links Beef Jerky you've eaten during the ME.
Basebaldy has 440K FYI
brett ritchey update? any websites offer relatively real-time chip counts??
WSOP.com is a great spot for updates as well as pokernews.com. Brett had a good level and is up over half a million.
Thanks for all the questions today guys! See you all tomorrow at the same time when we'll be around the 200-player mark.
