Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (11:58 AM)

Greetings Fight Freaks. Big notebook is posted, a blog from yesterday, schedule is updated, plenty of news stories and rankings are updated. And today of course is The Decision (boxing kind) on Pacquiao-Mayweather. And we've got a nice HBO show tomorrow night with Bradley-Abregu and Angulo-Alcine, so we have much to discuss. Let's get to it.

Charles (DFW)

If Pacquiao fights Cotto at 154, do you think the 9 extra pounds Cotto would be carrying would make a huge difference?

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 PM)

Not really. I don't see the fight going much differently if they fight again and I don't really want to see it again.

Tyler (Memphis, TN)

Dan, the ridiculous "Countdown Clock" on Top Rank's website...am I right to think this is 100% PR war being waged by Arum, which he seems to be winning (with Michael Wilbon calling Floyd a "coward" yesterday on PTI and the like)? Seems like there were no real substantive negotiations, and my personal opinion is that they are ducking each other. Your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

The addition of the clock to the TR web site tells me they know Mayweather isn't going to sign and now they can let loose. There were negotiations and they were substantive. I believe Pacquiao and Top Rank really want to make the fight for November. When it was talked about for March, I do not think Arum wanted to make it. Now he does. But back then Mayweather, who needed the money, wanted to make it. Now he has money from the Mosley fight and doesn't want to fight.

Tomer (New York, NY)

Has there been any update on Klitschko-Valuev, or does it look more and more likely that Briggs will be the opponent?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

Still open. Both are candidates.

Lenin (Columbus, OH)

Hey Dan today is D-day for mayweather vs Pacman do you think mayweather will finally agree?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

No I do not think he will agree. I hope I am very wrong. Check out this video from this morning's SportsCenter where I explain it in some detail. http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=5385625&categoryid=2378529

Erik (Huntsville, AL)

Dan, I really like the HBO card tomorrow. Predictions on the winners?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

I also like it. I think Bradley and Angulo are both favorites but that both opponents have a reasonable chance. But I like Bradley on points or late stoppage and I like Angulo on the mid-rounds knockout.

Floyd Mayweather (Las Vegas, NV)

I will be bringing my talent to the correctional facility and visit Uncle Roger!!!!!!!!

Garth (Stamford, CT)

Happy Friday Dan! Based on Mayweather's ego and the fact that negotiations have remained so quiet I would be shocked if he accepted the Pacquiao fight today because of a deadline set by Arum of all people.

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

Exactly. Once Bob went public with a deadline that meant he probably knew it wouldn't happen because Floyd is never going to be let himself be pushed around by Bob or Manny. And he is never going to do anything because they said so.

Danny (New York)

Has Floyd Mayweather responded yet?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

No.

nick (ky)

Ok, so if Pacquiao fights Margarito and JCC Jr fights Kelly Pavlik....which is what seems is likely, would you peg Andre Berto as the favorite to land Cotto? If that's how the chips fall, I feel like we have a great chance of seeing Cotto vs. Berto on HBO PPV.

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

If Pacquiao fights Margacheato and Pavlik fights Junior I really don't know where that leaves Cotto for the fall. I'd like to see him with Berto.

Odogg (NM)

Its pretty clear Mayweather won't fight Pacquiao this year or any year. I wouldn't be surprised if he announced his retirement today.....again.

Steve (NYC)

What has Briggs done to earn a title shot? Knock out a few bums in a row?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

He's done jack. That's how bad the division is these days and since Haye is ducking both brothers what's Vitali supposed to do? He's not going to just sit idle, nor should he.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

If we want Dan as HBO commentator, we need more signatures! http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/dan-rafael-for-commentator

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

You're a true Freak.

Lou (Detroit)

Any chance HBO adds Spinks Brundage to the August 7th telecast?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

No, although we may see highlights on the broadcast.

Aaron (Hartford)

Dan...Im suprised you havent blogged about GBP ripping off their own fighter in Ortiz... those are some pretty shocking revelations no ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

They didn't rip off anyone. Ortiz and Campbell knew what they were getting and knew what HBO paid. The real issue here is why would HBO so radically overpay for that fight? It's like the Pentagon paying $5,000 for a toilet seat.

Odogg (NM)

Bradley has major options if he looks impressive tomorrow night. I'd like to see him and Berto if he wins.

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

If Tim wins, I want to see him take care of the business at 140 first against Alexander, Khan, Maidana, those guys. THEN by all means let's get it on with Berto at 47.

Scott (Bloomington,MN)

Hey Dan, my buddy mentioned this to me and it seems logical, Top Rank is doing all this timetable and countdown clock stuff because they have agreed to all of the demands of Money and all deal points were agreed to so they can say they did everything they could to make the fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

Maybe so, but we still don't know what was supposedly agreed to specifically.

Nick (Harrisburg, PA)

Dan, I've been wanting to get this off my chest for some time, and i hope u comment...but i strongly believe that floyd mayweather has been a bigger detriment to this sport than good...he ducked tons of credible fighters, now he's pulling this when the public obv wants to see floyd face the best...i mean imagine him with the heart of an arturo gatti, my god...he could have single handedly revived boxing if he went about it the right way

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

I hope your chest feels better.

Jeff (Gilbert, AZ)

D$,Once the Top Rank clock reaches 0 will you write a blog detailing the Pacman PBF negotiations?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

I'll see what is up and report the details I know.

Brandon (San Diego)

Dan, I'm curious as to why negotiations for a different opponent for Manny if he cannot get Floyd, have been limited to just Cotto and Margarito? Two fights no one wants to see! Have they discussed at all possibilites of Manny fighting Berto or maybe Bradley (at 140 or a catch weight?)

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

I think it's pathetic that only Cotto and Margacheato are mentioned but Arum wants to unfortunately keep the fight in house. Why not talk about Berto, Paul Williams or Bradley (if he wins tomorrow). The point is there are other fights too.

Sam (VA)

Bob Arum putting the clock up is another way of telling the fans to go BLANK ourselves. He knows he is sinking any chance that was left to make the fight, but his ego is forcing him to take jabs at Floyd.

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Actually, Bob has been quite reserved thus far and has held back on saying anything negative about Floyd during the recent talks.

Greg (Armonk, NY)

Do you think Mayweather does not want to fight Manny or is it that he doesn't want to fight again this year? If not November, do you think it will happen in March 2011?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

I can't read Floyd's mind but it seems to me he doesn't at the very least want to fight the rest of the year.

Mike (Pa)

If not Floyd I want PAC man against sergio Martinez

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

That would be interesting.

Scott (Bloomington,MN)

Hey Dan, Any Swamp Donkey news?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

None, but I posted it just because I like the Swamp Donkey.

Scott (Bloomington,MN)

Hey Dan, When will we see the Tuaman vs Arreola? or Tua vs Peter? I'm dying for a Heavyweight war.

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Both would be good fights but don't hold your breath.

Brandon (San Diego)

Dan, what time will ESPN be airing Floyd's decision? Will Lampley be interviewing him instead of Jim Grey since he's an HBO fighter?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

Now wouldn't that be fun.

john (Texas)

I recommend Cotto vs. Sechew Powell before he takes on any big names. Powell based from NY (where Cotto following is at)...your thoughts Dan?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

My thoughts are who gives a crap about that fight? Please. Powell is not a name, has no big wins to warrant the fight and is boring. WC.

EJ (NM)

Do you think Zab gets an immediate title shot after he crushes the overmatched Santa Cruz or will he have to win another notable fight at 140 first?

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

I thin Zab will be right in the mix for a notable fight after tonight as long as he takes care of business. I think he crushes Santa Cruz.

Joe (Keesler Air Force Base)

As a PBF fan, gotta say im pretty damn pissed off that we have heard nothing from him whatsoever...

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

I don't blame you.

Greg (NJ)

Does Arum truly believe that a rematch with Cotto will be a big draw?? I haven't heard a single person who wants to see that.

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

I agree. I have no interest in it.

Wilson (New Jersey )

Dan, Any up date on a site for the Ward Andre fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

Not yet, although I am told it won't be in Oakland.

Carl (Richmond)

Hey, looks like we plugged the hole right before the Pac-Floyd deadline!

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

Good point.

Paul (UK)

Dan, do you give Ishe Smith any chance of upsetting Guerrero tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

I give him a shot because Ishe is a good boxer and experienced, but I still like Guerrero.

Chris (Boston)

Dan, did you ever think we would live in a boxing world where Monte Barrett, in his current state, could headline a PPV?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Sad, but true.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

When the clock strikes 0:00, will it be replaced with a in image of Arum flipping the bird?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Giving it up to my man Norman Chad: Pay the man, Shirley.

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

OK, Freaks, everyone put on ESPN2. I will be on SportsCenter in a couple of minutes to discuss the latest with the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight.

Anthony (Sacramento)

Dan any news on opponents for Sergio Martinez?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

Not yet. I know HBO is trying to make a rematch with Paul Williams, but so far the Williams camp is still not interested.

Kyle (Bristol, VA)

Any chance we see Martinez-Dzinziruk?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

Who knows? I think that would certainly be a reasonable alternative this fall for Martinez.

JohnnyG (Queens NYC)

ESPN Will be airing "The Real Decision" next week and Flloyd will announce that instead of fighting Manny he is moving down to fight Chris John and his broken rib

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

LOL!

Matt (Spokane, WA)

Note to self-- buy a TV for my office...

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

We are going live momentarily on SportsCenter.

Kevin (Boston)

dan, the guy on sportcenter called you "the raef." is that your nickname to them or is he just trying to be funny

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

That's what Buchi calls me.

Marc (Malden, MA)

I think we all know why Paul Williams isn't being discussed as a possible opponent...because NOBODY wants to fight him.

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

Martinez will, but Williams won't fight him.

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

Here we go.

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

Be right back.

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

I'm back.

Floyd Mayweather (Las Vegas)

I've decided to take my talents to Bankruptcy Court sometime around 2015.

Charles (DFW)

If Celestino Caballero can't get a big fight at 126, has he talked about going back to 122 and getting a fight with Wilfredo Vazquez, Jr. or maybe Antonio Escalante?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

No, because those are not big fights. Escalante, by the way, now fights at 126.

Charles (DFW)

After watching Lundy-Molina last week, I thought the stoppage was premature. But do you think referees, when they see one fighter talking trash like Lundy was, sometimes give that fighter less slack when he gets in trouble like Molina had him? I smell a rematch later if both men win titles, and I want Steve Smoger refereeing.

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

I didn't think the stoppage was premature at all. But I would not be opposed to a rematch.

Charles (DFW)

If Floyd Mayweather ducks the Pacquiao fight again, have a one-hour ESPN special where Floyd has to silently sit and take criticism from callers and the crowd. Call it "The Judgment"

Greg (NJ)

Dan, which do you think is accurate?1) the PWill camp doesn't want to fight Martinez again at all?2) The PWill camp doesn't want to fight Martinez next?or 3) The PWill camp is simply holding out hope for other fights as long as possible, but will fall back on Martinez if necessary?

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

I think No. 2.

Juan (PR)

Can't imagine Mayweather remaining silent when he is getting trashed for not fighting Pacquiao. At least he had the drug testing to blame last time around. What will be his explanation now?

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

I will ask him if and when he decides to talk.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

Great job, Dan. Your rule. But, you have to miss those First Take guys and their astute questions.

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

LOL! They've gotten better.

mike (baltimore)

cant stump the Raf...

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

He knows.

darryl p (indianapolis)

was u at the espys this year?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

No I weren't.

Ty (Walnut, CA)

Dan, isn't this deadline for Floyd a little arbituary? Do we really need 4 months to market this fight? I mean, who doesn't know about this fight? It's seems like this whole deadline stuff is sabotaging whatever chance this fight had of happening

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Most big ppvs get three solid months. To make this the biggest fight ever, four months is not unreasonable at all.

Ty (Walnut, CA)

Dan, what would the freaks do without you, man?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Curl up in a ball and cry for hours at a time?

Jeff (Gilbert, AZ)

Dan,You find it interesting that Pavlik's camp suddenly reversed their stance on Kelly's need to go up in weight when JCC JR became a potential fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

No shock. I think they think it's a money fight they win and there are not any major fights at 168 next for Pavlik while the Super Six is going on an with Bute fighting Brinkley.

Jay (MD)

Good job Dan. Also, Floyd will always lose a PR battle no matter who is right or wrong, because people don't like him.

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

I don't agree with that. If Floyd could articulate why he didn't take the fight and it was not a load of crap, I'd be the first to say he was in the right.

Chris (Boston)

Dan, can you give us a quick scouting report on the undefeated prospects fighting each other tonight? Lane and Dallas?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

Good ShoBox tonight, really good one. Lane-Dallas is an even steven match. Both young guys, both unbeaten. I think Lane is a better puncher. I think Dallas is the smoother boxer and slightly more experienced against better guys. Total toss up. I lean slightly to Dallas, but it's an excellent show. Guerrero-Smith in the main and Shawn Porter-Ray Robinson are also on the telecast. All three fights are solid as hell.

robb (north andover, ma)

you need a radio show, dan. a proper radio show. where you and another fellow can take callers, and make fun of them when they are stupid. if you already have this, and i don't know about it, commence making fun.

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

That would be a lot of fun. I could ban people on the radio!

Aaron (Hollywood, FL)

I met Glen Johson the other day in my condo building, extremely nice guy but any chance vs Cloud?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Glen is honestly one of the coolest, most down to earth nice guys I've ever met. A true gentleman. I think he has a chance with Cloud, but he will need to have energy for a long fight. At Glen's age I am not sure he can do that for 12 rounds still, but he is a tough guy to fight and has the heart of a champ, so although he's the dog, he could win the fight.

Jerrell ((Huntsville))

So paul williams is ducking sergio martinez?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

I won't call him a ducker but I will give you the facts as I know them: There is a $3 million offer on the table from HBO for the fight. Martinez is willing to go 50-50 for the fight on Oct. 2. That is obviously a fair deal. Yes, Paul beat him the first time but it was a bit of a controversial decision and since then Martinez won the middleweight championship. Neither guy is a proven much bigger draw than the other guy. So 50-50 is fair. The Williams side is still looking for a welterweight fight that doesn't exisit and, I am told, that they asked for 60-40 against Martinez, which obviously isn't likely to happen. If the Martinez side caved in and gave him 60-40 shame on them.

Matt (Naperville, IL)

So were Kimball/Hauser wrong about the GBP NYSAC suspension? There was no losing of 500k involved?

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

Nobody took $500,000 from the fighters. What GB did might not be the best way to divide the money, and maybe not the most fair, but as I know the details, they did nothing wrong. A lot of that "extra" $500,000 went to pay Don King the $250,000 he was owed for when GB bought out Nate's contract from King (which Nate wanted them to do) and another six figures went to Top Rank as part of its settlement with Top Rank on the Ortiz contract. And, may I add, a promoter is entitled to make money on a fight. Now why HBO paid that much I have no idea. And also remember this -- as much as it's the right thing to do to pay the fighters a reasonable percentage of what you get for a fight, a promoter has no fiduciary duty whatsoever to a fighter. That's the manager. So if a promoter gets $1 million for a fight from a network and can convince a fighter to take $100,000 that's ain't cool but it isn't against the law.

Rick (Marina)

Cant wait for Marquez-Lopez, Lopez gon get waxed, he went down off one punch from a guy who doesn't have much power, imagine whats gonna happend when Marquez lands that huge right. lights out.

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Lopez is a lot faster than Marquez and fresher, so imagine what happens when he lands a right hook Marquez never sees? I love the fight. People see it both ways. It's going to be a blast.

Wes (Philly)

I went to the Mike Jones fight last week and I met Antonio Tarver he took pictures and signed autographs for everyone. Seems like a great guy.

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Antonio is usually a pretty cool guy. Enjoys the fans.

Mitch (Chicago)

I'm hearing the Donovan George vs. Curtis Stevens fight is getting called off, any details as to why, and where do you think these two should move from here?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Somebody didn't read today's notebook.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

My Floyd Mayweather bobblehead just checked his bobblewatch

Jason (Riverside,CA)

Hi Dan. Anything to read into the CSAC not wanting Margocheato on their agenda for the 26th or just a case of time constraints?

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

I think it was that it was a timing thing.

Mike (Philly)

Dan - Do you think Mike Jones is ready for a Berto fight? I think it may be too early to put him in against someone at that level

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

I think he's ready to roll.

Alan (South Africa)

Interesting theory about Floyd not wanting the fight this year because he's flush. At this point I would like to give him some free advice. Pay the IRS!

Chris (London)

Any word if the Shower Door will be ringside tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

The Door isn't answering his phone.

Brandon (San Diego)

So, how's that Twitter account coming along? I can't stand Twitter, but if you actually created a Twitter account to break news to the Freaks, I would undoubtedly sign up. Just think, the Freaks can be anywhere and get breaking fight news!! The Freaks don't just want it, we demand it!

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

Each week I get closer and closer.

G$ (Bay Area)

What's the deal with Vic Darchinyan? No fight on Sept 18 as rumored...does he have anything in the works?

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

He's not fighting Sept. 18. Gary Shaw told me yesterday he's fighting on Showtime in November.

Nick (Queens, NY)

I guess you don't want to acknowledge the fact that Floyd's trainer may be locked up during training camp for this fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

He might be, but his father trained him for many, many years and has been back in the camp for the past two fights. That should not be a problem. When Floyd fought Baldomir I believe he did so without his uncle or his father. He and his dad were still estranged and Roger was locked up. Roger not being there would be an excuse.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What Sport do you follow besides Boxing & what is your favorite sports team?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

Yankees, NY Giants, Knicks, Duke hoops!!!

Khalil (Atlanta, GA)

Dan, is there any possibility Top Rank waits until after the JMM-Diaz fight for a possible Pacquiao-Marquez III match up if Marquez wins?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

No chance. Pacquiao's next fight will be a done deal in the next few days. It won't be Marquez.

Mario (Corpus Christi, Texas)

As understandable as it is to not bend over backwards for one of the Klitschko brothers, I mean they don't have a huge selling ability in the States. However, how can you be a boxing network without having the heavyweight division in your program? Seems to me HBO has made a huge mistake.

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

I tend to agree. While I agree with HBO's decision not air some of the bad Klitschko fights, I think airing Povetkin is something they should do. They did televise Povetkin's fight with Chambers. He is an undefeated, Olympic gold medalist who ranks 4th in most unbiased rankings behind only the brothers and Ducker Haye. And you also have some interesting stories with it being Emanuel Steward against Teddy Atlas. And on top of that, HBO can get the fight awfully cheap all things considered. So I would have liked to see HBO televise that fight. But I respect Ross Greenburg's decision even though I don't agree with him this time.

Garth (Stamford, CT)

I have always been a fan of Zab Judah, but what a watse of talent he has been. He should be up there with Mayweather and Pacquiao right now. If only he had the discipline of Maweather, he would he a superstar because of his personality and willingness to fight anyone.

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

Hard to argue with you on that.

Ced (LV)

Another boxing writer just posted this on Twitter: "Hearing that Pavlik-Chavez Jr. is now unlikely for Dec4th. Top Rank thinks it might be too soon for Jr. and Roach wants more fights b4"

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

No kidding. I wrote that in my story yesterday. The fight is not on Dec. 4.

Roy (LA)

Nick -- I guess you don't want to acknowledge the fact that Roger being in jail would be nobody's fault other than Roger's.

The Good Doctor Filth (Cleveland)

I can't believe you are comparing the Baldomir fight on basic HBO to the Pac fight that would be in front of the eyes of the world.

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Baldomir was on HBO PPV and I merely stated the facts. The Good Doctor is The Bad Doctor today.

Ced (LV)

Will you be on the conference call with Arum at 3am EST?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Yes.

Justin (Springfield, N.J.)

Dan: Is there any chance that HBO actually sticks to its guns with respect to Berto and Williams not fighting lame opponents, given Al Haymon's involvement with both fighters?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

I have no idea what they will do but I hope HBO continues to demand only the top fights.

Marc (Claremont, Ca)

Hi Dan. I think we should also note that between rounds with his fight against Mosley, Floyd was looking over to Floyd sr for more advice other than just Roger's instructions. So I dont see how Roger being in jail would be a problem

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

It would be a problem only for Roger.

Rich (LA)

Do you see The Klitschko's holding to never being on HBO again?

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

I think it's possible. They are guys who have certain beliefs and seem to stick to them.

Chris (Bay Area)

Dan, I was watching some old fights the other day and came across Lewis-Klitschko. I would have to say that is the last great competitive Heavyweight fight. Your thoughts? Impressive how VItali took the fight on such short notice and pretty much dominated

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

I was at that fight ringside and it was a tremendous fight and it came together at the last minute, which made it sort of surreal. They were supposed to fight separate opponents but when Kirk Johnson pulled out against Vitali they matched them together. That was a very memorable night and a great fight. I remember at the post fight press conference sitting next to Lennox's mum and her telling me she didn't want her baby to fight anymore. And you know what? He didn't.

Eric P (Saratoga Springs, NY)

Floyd is his own trainer anyway. When he got rocked against Mosley his corner did a terrible job. It was Floyd that made those adjustments through his own genius, not Roger or Sr.

Brendan (Philadelphia)

Look on the bright side Dan, if Floyd passes on the fight, you get another year of answering "when are floyd & manny gonna fight?". Lucky you!?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Thanks for reminding me. I should banish you for that.

Internal Revenue Service (Boston Office)

Let us revive the Pac-Floyd talks within a few months after we send out our collections notice again.

Bronk (Dillsburg, PA)

"No I weren't".......now that's a classic reply to the original poster. Good work Dan.

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

Glad you got the subtle joke.

Love Child (The basement)

Hi Dad.

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. Go train for your Aug. 21 fight on the Adamek-Grant undercard.

chuzen (st. louis)

dan, with your rule that at least one of the fights on the undercard of ppv show should be one that hbo or showtime buys, how many of the fights on the july 31 undercard do you feel would be bought by hbo or showtime?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

All three, which is why it's a terrific show.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

Do you see the Linares loss last year as a blip or a fluke, or do you think it is a sign of him being overhyped?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

I'm not sure.

Nick (Harrisburg, PA)

Do you think Floyd will at least give us the dignity of responding?

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

I doubt he will make any public remarks.

Riche (Irving, tx)

Hey Dan i've always defended Mayweather's stance on how this was a business and he was doing things using business sense, now i can't defend his actions business wise it doesn't get any bigger than this because this fight can't be hyped any more than what it is now. would you agree a real champion who regards their self as the greatest of all would say " i would fight this guy for free" Do you think Mayweather leagacy is diminishing a little?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

If Mayweather continues to find reasons not to fight Pacquiao it will not reflect well on him. What can I say? That's the truth. He will go the rest of his life with people asking him why didn't you fight Manny Pacquiao? It will overshadow so many of the big things he has done. I remember Lennox Lewis talking about how no matter where he would go when he was heavyweight champ people would always ask him, "When are you going to fight Mike Tyson?" It had to happen. Finally it did. Had it not, Lennox would still be asked about it to this day. Of course that fight wasn't delayed because Lennox didn't want it. It was delayed because of the HBO-Showtime aspect of it. Pacquiao-Mayweather has not such problems. You have the two best guys in the world. Two HOFers. Both guys are available. The fight will generate hundred-plus million and they're still finding excuses.

Jeff (OH)

I think at the end of the countdown, a message should pop up on the screen that says, "PBF = Punk B**ch Floyd"

Roy (Reno)

Dan, have you asked why Schaeffer what happened to his pledge to stack every card with meaningful fights like the 31st and then viola an absolute horrible show on Sept 18 with not one HBO fight on the card?

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

Sept. 18 has one fight set so far plus Alvarez vs. TBA. So I will wait and see what we actually get before I rip anyone thank you very much.

Brooks (Cleveland)

good news in your article on froch-abraham figuring out where to fight. who do you like? i like abraham KO8

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

I lean to Abraham as well.

Tim (St. Louis)

I understand your point on Floyd/Manny, but do you think Floyd is taking a lot of flack before anyone even knows what's in the contract?

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

Yes, which is why you don't see me going crazy. I want to know the details of the deal before I punish him for turning it down.

Anthony (Sacramento)

Dan will the british show in the notebook be available in the U.S.?

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

Not at this time. I wish it was at least a cheap PPV in the afternoon. That's a helluva show if you like the Euro title bouts. I like the show a lot.

Tony (Tampa)

Dan,Has Leonard Ellerbe taken you out to dinner as he promised?

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

Not yet.

Chris (Newark/ Puerto Rico)

What's worse for Floyd? A) Not fight Pacman or B) Fight him and lose after so much shyt he talked?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

Definitely A. Somebody loses. Does it reflect badly on Tommy Hearns, for example, that he lost to Hagler or Leonard? Not at all. People love him because he fought everyone. Does it reflect badly on Joe Frazier that he lost 2 of 3 to Ali? Of course not.

Jackson (IA)

Good Lord...you Floyd backers are ridiculous. If he doesn't take this fight, with all his ridiculous demands met...then he doesn't want a piece of Manny. Period. Put it to rest, go root for a real fighter. I swear, sometimes I think Floyd has his entourage post on here to defend him...

JP (Columbus, OH)

Something just stinks about the prospect of PacMan rewarding Margacheato, fresh off of banishment, with a huge payday. I'd rather see Pac fight 10 other guys before seeing Margs get a fat paycheck. Just on principle, that's all.

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

I agree. Pac-Margacheato depresses me.

Mike (ND)

But you are posting all of these freaks killing Floyd on YOUR Chat.

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

I post what the people say. I have yet to see of all the comments that are flowing in anyone really supporting Floyd.

Chris (Los Angeles CA)

As it pertain to Uncle Roger's corner work, how hard is it to have someone repeatedly say "keeping running that s*** up the middle"?

Doug (UK)

Any news on whats happening with Roy Jones Jr? Has he given any indication on whether he still wants to continue fighting?

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

He does want to fight. Here's a tidbit for you -- his company CEO John Wirt talked to ESPN about Jones potentially fighting on FNF in August, although ultimately they didn't make a deal. But the point is, he wants to fight.

jeff (burbank, ca)

have to correct you, dan. there are no "details of the deal" because there is no deal. arum has an offer. one that his side obviously favors. any good lawyer would tell floyd not to take it. deals take work, consensus and compromise. not one-sided deadlines

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

You're an idiot.

chuzen (st. louis)

one good thing about pac - margacheato is that margs will get another beatdown

Matt (Spokane, WA)

My Floyd bobblehead just told me ... well... nothing.

Marc (Malden, MA)

I still think Hagler beat Leonard.

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

Funny you should mention that fight -- I literally was watching it before this chat. My copy of it stunk so I got a sweet DVD yesterday of the HBO replay of the fight as well as Leonard-Hearns II from a friend of mine I trade with. And I was watching it this morning. I think Leonard pulled it out close.

Ced (LV)

Where will you be on 9/18? Vegas, Los Angeles, or home?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

My plan is to be in Vegas for Lopez-Marquez.

Darin (KC)

Winky Wright was on the radio yesterday saying he wanted to fight Sergio Martinez. I think he's getting more delusional by the day. Your thoughts Danimal?

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

Lovely to want to fight him, but it ain't happening because nobody is going to pay for it -- meaning no network. And it won't sell tickets anywhere and Winky doesn't deserve a shot at the middleweight title at the moment.

robb (north andover, ma)

see what i mean about the radio show? just imagine being able to publicly lambaste jeff in burbank! or, respond angrily to people who call you a floyd hater, anti-british and an obnoxious yankee fan! (ok i added the last one)

Chris (Bay Area)

100% agree with you Dan, it makes no sense to throw Floyd under the bus yet. With everything so quiet it is very possible that there is so much more going on than we know. I am a huge Floyd supporter but I would be dissapointed if he didnt want to fight because of a lame excuse. But Pacquiao needs to fight someone of relevence as well if the fight doesnt happen. NO ONE wants to see him fight Cotto or Margagheato again.

PJ (Fairfield CA)

Any chance we can get a play by play of the conference call with arum like we did for the margarito hearing? that was priceless, I know we all enjoyed it very much. It felt as we were gettint the live uncensored version like we were in the meeting. We really enjoyed that experience and would love to have that again? any chance of a RAD tongiht?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

I won't be doing play by play if there's a call but I, yes, I forgot to mention -- there WILL be a RAD tomorrow night after the HBO telecast, so make sure to join in. I'm sure we'll have a lot to discuss between this weekened's fights and THE DECISION.

Bk don (Brooklyn)

So i look at the rankings and margacheato is somehow #1 in the wba and wbc jr middleweight div. This is off of his win over Garcia, who wasn't ranked even ranked by the bodies? What bs belt would margacheato & Pacman supposedly fight for? You can't make this stuff up!

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

The WBC is a fraud by making 'Cheato No. 1. A complete joke that deserves no respect.

Jason (Boston, MA)

Nice to see Winky is still alive at least.

darryl p (indianapolis)

seeing roy jones jr on fnf would not be that bad

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Agreed.

Marc (Malden, MA)

Do you think Paul Williams is waiting to see how Floyd-Pacman plays out, before accepting the Martinez rematch?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

I have no idea but he has no chance to get either of them so I don't know why that would be an issue.

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

Just an update Freaks on today's TV schedule: I will also be on ESPNEWS to talk about Pac-May at 5:20ish ET as well as on 6 pm SportsCenter and on tonight's FNF. Busy day.

Ced (LV)

Just curious. On a day like 9/18 when you choose one show over the other to go to, do you expect the other promoter to say something to you? In this instance, will Richard Schaefer call you up and say, "Why the hell aren't you coming to our show?"

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

100 percent. That happens all the time when shows conflict. I say I can't be in two places at once and you gotta go where the more important or better fight is.

Fabian (Minneapolis)

The Manny/Floyd November fight should be a non-story. This is just Top Rank floating this fight to setup Manny's next fight. ESPN is doing boxing a disservice by keeping this story going.

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

You're a dope. It's news. The deadline is real. Like it or not, people everywhere are interested in what is going to happen. ESPN and myself are simply reporting the news as we know it.

Steve (NYC)

If HBO is saying the heavies are dead, it is their own fault. Offer up a shootout like Peter- Tua and fans will watch.

Richard (Kendall Park, NJ)

Dan, I got tix to go and see FNF at the Prudential Center tonight and couldn't be more excited! As a long time freak you may be shocked to hear that this will actually be my first live fight. Can't wait! Solid main event tonight!

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

That's great. I meet people all the time at fights who are huge fight fans and tell me it's their first live fight. If you like boxing and have never gone, once you go you will love it even more. Have fun.

Khalil (Atlanta, GA)

Better chance of happening: Floyd accepting the fight at 11:59 or Froch's girlfriend dumping him for me?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

Froch's chick.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Hey Dan, What was the final PPV #'s for Money vs Mosley?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

Off the top of my head I believe the number HBO reported was 1.4 million.

John (NC)

Take care of yourself Dan the Man, I'll check back in a couple of weeks. I can't go through this May-Pac nonsense again.

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

Sorry bro.

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Breaking news from the Bat Email.

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

Arum will talk to the media at 3 am ET (midnight PT) once the dealine passes. Fight fans can listen to the call via stream live on Toprank.com. Should be a wild night. I've done a lot of conference calls. Never at 3 am.

Richard (Kendall Park, NJ)

The WBC will probably give Margacheato a shot at their "Plaster" belt...for a small sanctioning fee of course...

jeff (burbank, ca)

nice to see arum isn't turning this isn't some kind of publicity stunt.

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

He's never been one to pass up an opportunity. And why should he? If Floyd passes it's news he wants to get his side out there and a lot of people are interested to hear from Manny's side.

Jimmy (Arlington, Va)

If Pacman faces Margacheato, and Margacheato can't fight in the U.S., where would it be? I couldn't imagine Pacman going to Mexico for the fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

Supposedly, Manny would go to Mexico, although I am very skeptical of a major PPV taking place there.

chuzen (st. louis)

floyd's boxing haiku about why he won't sign: ...../......./.....

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

Brilliant.

evan (venice, ca)

froch/abraham is in monaco. i'm going. in a tuxedo with james bond.

chuzen (st. louis)

if john molina is dumb, is lundy dumber?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

Obviously.

Ross (Indianapolis)

thanks for the heads-up on the conference call! I hope to be drunk and belligerent at that point, and listening to more excuses about why the fight didn't happen should motivate me to continue drinking until the sun comes up

Jackson (IA)

Roy Jones thinking about taking a fight on FNF? I think I want to cry a little...

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

I hear ya. Would be pretty sad.

JohnnyG (Queens NYC)

DTM(dan the messiah) How much of the Full FNF card will be televised tonight. any idea?

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

At least the two main fights and then undercards as time permits.

Juice (NYC)

Gotta love the Floyd fans turning this around on Arum. Is the clock childish? Sure. Is the 3am conference call self-serving? No doubt. But at the end of the day, it's on the fighters themselves to make a fight. Pacquiao wants it. Floyd, apparently, does not.

Jay (Nashville)

Realistically, what could be PBF's rationale for not making this fight? The money is there, the prestige of the fight is there...is there any chance Floyd thinks this is the one fight he can't win?

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

I have no idea.

Joe (New York)

Who set this "deadline?" How can anyone kill PBF for not meeting Arum's arbitrary "deadline?"

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

It's not arbitrary. It's a rough deadline they've all known about for weeks and maybe months. Time to you know or get off the pot. Either make it or dont. If they don't let them get on with making Manny's next fight.

Jonathan (New York)

Dan, I think im in love with you. Any chance in a Cotto-Argulo fight, and who do you thinks wins that one. I may have to take Cotton on that one-slightly better boxer.

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

Settle down dude. I'd love a Cotto-Angulo fight. Gary Shaw, who promoted Perro, would love it too. Great action fight and if Angulo wins tomorrow why not?

Juan (PR)

Felt the earthquake this morning?

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

Yes we did. I actually woke up just before it and couldn't sleep and had put on the TV and my wife was awaken by one of the cats so we were both up in the dark and felt it. I thought it was a thunderstorm at first.

chuzen (st. louis)

cotto angulo would be sick

Eric P (Saratoga Springs, NY)

Any word on Demetrius Andrade fighting someone that should actually be in the ring with him?

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

None.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

dan, why would anyone think differently about floyd avoiding this fight? it has been his MO for years and years. he has made a science of avoiding the best fighters and fights avaliable at any given time.

Ty (Walnut, CA)

Maybe Haye and Floyd will start hanging out

Paul B (NY, NY)

DTM- any truth to the rumor that Cotto and Berto are in negotiations for a fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

Arum and Lou DiBella have discussed it but I would not say they are actually negotiating anything. Lou basically wanted Bob to know that Berto was available once he figured out what was going on with Pac-May.

RS3 (Stamford CT)

Roy Jones on FNF....why am I thinking of Willie Mays falling down in the outfield and Jerry Rice getting cut from the Seattle Seahawks?

Mike (Los Angeles)

Dan, you've taken Bernabe Conception off the top 10 featherweights. Being only 22 years old (fighting a prime 27 year old JML) , do you think he'll eventually become a top featherweight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

Maybe, but he needs to win some fights against solid guys. But he's young and if he bounces back sure he can be a top contender.

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

By the way Freaks, I'll be the studio guest in Bristol next week for FNF.

Nick (Harrisburg, PA)

Dare I ask what in the world Golden Boy has to say about this? And if its nothing...what sort of "tells" are u picking up from them?

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

Golden Boy is in the backseat on this whole Pac-May thing. My understanding is that the entire negotiation has been Arum talking to Ross Greenburg and Al Haymon talking to Ross, who has served as a go-between. The three of them doing everything. It is my understanding that Arum and Haymon have never had a conversation between them about the fight and that everything has gone through Ross, who is desperately trying to get it done. Eventually, Haymon took a final proposal to Mayweather (one Al supposedly was OK with) and Mayweather has not yet agreed to it. What exactly is in the final proposal, I am not 100 percent sure of the details on drug testing and such. All that said, I would imagine Al has been in regular touch with Schaefer about the talks.

Justin (Sactown,CA)

Bob Arum at midnight on a Friday? Make sure the kids are in bed that could get lively!

Rags (NYC)

Dan, how many fights would you guess are put into play during random bar talks? (ie: Jr v. Pavlik, or Merchant suggesting Pacquiao move up in weight).....

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

A lot. I have been there when that stuff has happened.

Cody (Minneapolis)

Is Lopez vs Marquez official or are there still details to be ironed out? I'm hesitant to book my airfare & Uncle Bob isn't helping

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

My understanding is that it's a done, signed deal.

J in FLA (Cocoa, FL)

The Don's St. Louis card is looking pretty good. You think it holds together?

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

Yes, I do. I am looking forward to it and plan to go.

Paul B (NY, NY)

Buy or sell? If/when Gamboa fights JuanMa, they will both still have undefeated records?

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

Buy.

Rags (NYC)

Nice to see Tua coming in at 237lbs.

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

I agree. He's going to beat the crap out of Barrett.

Joe (Schmo)

If Pac-Margs actually fight in Abu Dhabi, would you fly?

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

That fight ain't happening in Abu Dhabi.

Rags (NYC)

Follow-up: Are most of those fights just "thrown out" there to see if something will stick?

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

I wouldn't say most, but sure some are. I have been there at the bar late night after a fight or in the days leading up to a fight and just talking to the promoters and we always talk about possible fights. Sometimes they actually get made.

Brent (Detroit)

Any word on Seth Mitchel's next fight? GO GREEN! Sparties over the Blue Devil's in next years National Championship game!

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

First off Duke rules! If you would read the ESPN.com fight schedule you would see that Mitchell fights Derek Bryant (a step up for him) on July 31 undercard in Las Vegas.

Joel (Eastchester, NY)

Dan, how many rounds will it take tomorrow for Tua to smash Barrett?

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

I think he gets him out in maybe a couple of rounds. 3-4 at the most.

Kent (St Catharines)

DTM, have you ever seen Al Berstein in concert? I could not believe he has a couple cd's and performs live? Made me laugh reading that.

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

I have. I went to one his boxing shows in Vegas years ago. Funny stuff and a lot of fun.

J in FLA (Cocoa, FL)

Do any fights actually happen in Abu Dhabi?

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

No, Arum just talks about them. And Macau.

David Haye (UK)

quack quack quack quack quack quack

Jim (Tacoma, WA)

Very disappointed in HBO for not televising Klitschko-Povetkin. It's one of the best heavyweight fights that can be made. And to make it worse, because of false promises we won't be able to see it on showtime either. Hopefully espn comes through or it ends up on ppv.

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

ESPN and the Klitschko team are talking, but I do not have high hopes for that. If ESPN doesn't do it and HBO and Showtime don't change their mind, the fight will wind up on PPV.

Steve (NYC)

Why doesn't the Notebook have a print feature? It makes good reading (ahem) away from the computer.

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

I have no idea. You could always just print it out.

Terry (FL)

Any updates on the size of Valuev poop?

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

These are my readers.

Juan (PR)

FYI. your call with espn2 is posted on espn.com boxing section. in case people missed it.

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

I believe that was the one from this morning's 9:30 am SportsCenter.

Kolbe (Lancaster)

Dan, How has Pavlik never had a nutritionist? He has a cutman with paper towels and no one to advise what he eats. Shockingly this seems so ill prepared for a top fighter

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

I asked him manager that when we spoke the other day and I was shocked. For a guy who struggles to make weight and has made millions it's insane that he didn't have one.

alan (South Africa)

Dear David HayeYou are a chicken, not a duck.Regards

Raul Jr. (Everett, WA)

Whats up DTM, my brother and I were arguing about Pavlik with him saying Pavlik doesnt make entertaining fights and that he sucks. He doesnt like Pavlik which is why he said what he said but I wouldnt go as far as saying pavlik doeant make entertaining fights. Can I pleases get your opinion on this matter so I can shut this 'Boxing Novice' up?

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

Love him or hate him, Pavlik DOES make fun fights to watch. If he fights Chavez I do think it would be a very entertaining fight.

miguel (los angeles)

I think you should only post comments regarding pacquiao-mayweather coming from mexican fans, we are the most neutral, both guys have kick the crap out of our fighters, so we either hate or respect both guys equally.

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 PM)

Hilarious.

John H (Augusta)

Has Mrs DTM ever asked if a fight was being made or gotten fed up with hearing too much about boxing from you?

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 PM)

Once in awhile she's asked about a fight being made, but I can't recall her ever getting on my case about too much boxing. She's a real sport about it.

Brent (Detroit)

Does anyone know if Pavlik has access to electricity and running water when he trains?

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

LOL!

Jake (Austin)

Getting married in Vegas on 7/30 and my fiancee just surprised me with tickets to the Diaz-Marquez fight on 7/31. Bodes well for the marriage, but I've only been to Vegas fights at the MGM. Where are the good spots at Mandalay for hanging out afterward?

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

That is awesome. Have fun. Mandalay has some good places to hang. There's a great club/bar in the middle of the casino. There is a smaller bar by the main elevators and there is also the sportsbook.

Brent (Detroit)

Shame on me DTM for not checking the fight schedule. I have no excuse....

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

Don't let it happen again or I will Banishment on you.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

Have you ever told Mrs. DTM that she is banned?

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

Nah. Although we so tell the cats sometimes that they are banned from our room at night.

JD (Phoenix)

Don't know why you think that Pac-May is not going to happen? I just asked my Lennox Lewis Bobblehead if the fight will happen and it said "Absolutely".

miguel (los angeles)

when is the next RAD?

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

Tomorrow night after the HBO show.

Sarah (LA)

Hi Dan! I love you :-)

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

This we know.

Jeremy (Bosstown, MA)

Going back to what you wrote earlier, my first live fight was ringside at Alexander-Urango in March and it definitely cemented my freak status. Anything good on the Alexander-Kotelnik undercard? Does Juan Urango have anything in the works?

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

The entire Alexander-Kotelnik uc is listed on my ESPN.com fight schedule. Urango was possibly going to fight Julio Diaz on Aug. 28 on FNF (on a special Saturday night telecast) but that is apparently not happening now, so I don't know what's next for Urango.

RS3 (Stamford CT)

I've read that Pavlik has always been tight about spending money, but not anteing up for a top cutman, nutritionist, etc. seems to have really hurt his career.

Dan Rafael
  (2:31 PM)

Obviously, because the cutman for Martinez, who may have cost Pavlik the title, did the worst job I have ever seen. When you have a thoroughbred, you get the best jockey you can to ride him. When you have an elite fighter, you surround him with the best corner you can even if it costs money. The Pavliks were cheap and didn't want to spend for a cutman who knew what he was doing and they paid the ultimate price.

Ross (Indianapolis)

DTM, would you rather see Vitali fight Briggs or Valuev? I know Briggs hasn't deserved it, but I think he would at least be slightly more entertaining than the lumbering giant. Although, seeing Vitali knock Valuev out would have some entertainment value as well...

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

Not really interested in either but if I HAD to pick one, I would take Valuev.

lurky (dublin)

amir khan vs devon alexander? who wins

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

At this point, I have no doube Devon would beat him.

Nick (Harrisburg, PA)

Let's have all the freaks give their first live fights: Mine was the Taylor-Froch fight...and i can honestly say that i started the USA! USA! chants...plus i tried to start a Rafael! Rafael! chant but it didnt take...sorry buddy

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

I forgive you.

Jeff (Alabama)

Pavlik has to save for his bar tab. And antibiotics for staff.

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

My bad.

John (Jersey)

Dan, any news on which leg Pavlik will choose to cut off to make 160 again?

Dan Rafael
  (2:34 PM)

That has not yet been announced.

evan (venice, ca)

any truth pavlik is switching to light beer and moving down to 147?

Dan Rafael
  (2:34 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Jeff (San Antonio)

You're allowing Briggs in the conversation, but nothing about Cedric Boswell? C'mon!

Dan Rafael
  (2:34 PM)

Boswell? Journeyman who is 40 and never done anything in the ring that mattered.

Harley (NY)

DTM!!!! Todays my 15th birthday and im going to be ringside at Judah-Cruz, i was wondering, do you know how many are supposed to be in attendance tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:35 PM)

Well at least one now that you told me you're going.

Justin (Sactown, CA )

(Haiku) greatest of all-time?, today is the deadline floyd, not a peep is heard...

Anthony (Sacramento)

My first fight was Morales Barrera 2!!!! and I will never forget I spoke to Larry Merchant after the fight and he agreed with me that it semmed Morales won.

James (Lexington, KY)

Worse duck - Mayweather or Haye?

Dan Rafael
  (2:37 PM)

Haye by far.

Matt (Newburyport, MA)

First Live Fight: Ward v. Augustus, Hampton Beach, NH, 2001 Fight of the year, freak ever since.

Mike (Pa )

First fight juanma vs mtwaga and what a fight

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

Good one. I was at that one too.

Anthony (Sacramento)

Dan, what are the chances Showtime adds the Salido fight to Juanma-Marquez?

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

Arum is talking to Showtime. We'll see.

Odogg (NM)

Vargas-Rivera in El Paso. Vargas' first fight after the brutal loss to Trinidad. Vargas won by TKO after getting up off the canvas. Great fight!

Dan Rafael
  (2:39 PM)

Nice one. I watched that one on TV and I thought Vargas wasnt going to get up after that knockdown. He was really hurt.

Jonny (Fallbrook, CA)

DTM, Do you think Floyd lost his first bout against Castillo?

Dan Rafael
  (2:39 PM)

I watched on TV and scored it a draw.

Martin (Iraq)

Hey Dan your chats get me through over here in Iraq every Friday night in Iraq, If Angulo is impressive tomorrow could you see him trying to get Cotto in the ring or avenging his lost to Cintron

Dan Rafael
  (2:40 PM)

First off, stay safe. At least you have internet access! I think a rematch with Cintron could be possible and I would love to see the Cotto fight but I am not sure that fight is in Top Rank's plans for Cotto.

Homer (OH)

Why do you say in the rankings we might not see Sam Peter for awhile?

Dan Rafael
  (2:41 PM)

Because he is sitting close to a mandatory fight and will let things play out for a little bit befrore he fights again.

Pj (Fairfield)

My first fight was hopkins taylor 1, whiel I was walking out of the arena I saw Sam Peter whom I spoke with Briefly and was really a nice guy and I think he was happy I noticed him. He was really into talking about boxing and a cool guy to talk with!

E.L. Trujillo (Mile High City)

Marquez-Diaz @ the Toyota Center - 2009 FOY! I met DTM right next to the Press section.

Dan Rafael
  (2:41 PM)

LUCKY YOU!

victor (north jersey)

adamek vs cunningham was my first live fight..what a fight at the rock

Jose Sulaiman (Mexico)

Mr. Rafael, I am sorry to inform you that we are stripping Joel Julio of his Love Child moniker because of his failure to pay sanctioning fees. Joan Guzman is the new interim Love Child. He will fight Alan Green, the Silver Love Child, for the title of Regular Love Child.

Dan Rafael
  (2:43 PM)

Relax old man.

Brad (Philly)

First live fight: Taylor vs Pavlik 1. What an exciting fight!

Tyler (Memphis, TN)

First live fight: RJJ-Glen Johnson. Surreal. I thought Roy was seriously hurt.

Dan Rafael
  (2:43 PM)

The night of that fight Riddick Bowe also made his comeback. USA Today would not let me go to either one of them. And that is the night I decided to accept the offer from ESPN and leave the paper.

Roy (Reno)

Johnny Tapia vs Cesar Soto at Mandalay Bay. Not as sexy as some others but really glad I got to see him before he was totally shot.

Camacho (Yucaipa)

Hey Dan! I was listening to Dana White talk about the state of boxing on ESPN. To me, he came off as a total D-bag. What were your thoughts on the interview, and his view of the state of boxing?

Dan Rafael
  (2:44 PM)

I didn't listen to it and although I have mad respect for Dana for what he has done with UFC, I don't care what he thinks about boxing so I don't plan to listen to it.

Jonathan (New York)

first fight Cotto-Foreman

Dan Rafael
  (2:45 PM)

Better late than never.

Anthony (Pensacola)

First live fight: Roy Jones, Jr. vs. a guy named Lester Yarbrough and the Pensacola Fair Grounds (well before the all the championship belts). My dad took me at 9 years old.

Dan Rafael
  (2:45 PM)

I actually have the poster for that fight in my collection.

Gino (New York)

Is is just me or does Arum own about half of all the marquee names out there?

Dan Rafael
  (2:46 PM)

Not just you. Top Rank promotes many top fighters and many top prospects as well.

JMM (Mexico)

I would drink a tall glass of my own urine to be posted in this chat.

Dan Rafael
  (2:46 PM)

Guzzle it down dude.

Luke (Danbury, CT)

Dan, what is the best nickname someone has given you in the chats? (ie D$$, Danimal, Danibal Lector)

Dan Rafael
  (2:47 PM)

I sorta liked at Christmas time somebody called me Danta Claus.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

What about Dannah Montana?

Dan Rafael
  (2:49 PM)

Not bad. My niece is a big fan of hers.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

dan, rewatched bradley vs. holt the other day. could you answer a question - how in the hell did bradley get up after that knockdown? brutal!

Dan Rafael
  (2:49 PM)

Exactly. Bradley showed the heart of a champ in that fight.

Bert Sugar (Las Vegas)

My first fight was Cain versus Abel. Abel kept dropping his right hand, and paid for it dearly.

Brock (Illinois)

First live fight: Spinks-Latimore. An exciting Spinks fight.

Pedro (Redlands, CA)

1st fight: Mosley-Wright, Mandalay BayBetter fight thought was on the undercard Jirov - Mesi.

Dan Rafael
  (2:50 PM)

Nice. I was at that one. Mesi-Jirov basically ended Mesi's career.

Billy (Peoria, IL)

I'm saving my first live fight for Mayweather-Pacquiao.

Dan Rafael
  (2:50 PM)

See ya next year, if ever.

Steve (Hartford)

Is it true Zabdiel came in at 141? I never thought he could seriously make it down to 140

Dan Rafael
  (2:51 PM)

It is true. Santa Cruz I believe was 143, which was the contract limit.

JD (DC)

Dan should I pay for good seats to see Strasburgh? Did you enjoy it?

Dan Rafael
  (2:51 PM)

I had a blast at the game.

Nick (Harrisburg, PA)

What Dan? You didnt like my Sir-Chats-A-Lot?

Dan Rafael
  (2:51 PM)

Not bad either.

Richard (Kendall Park, NJ)

Speaking of Jirov, I thought that he was making a comeback as a Cruiserweight. Did that ever happen?

Dan Rafael
  (2:51 PM)

He fought maybe once back at the weight and hasnt been heard from in forever.

Andy (miami)

how do you pronounce your last name??

Dan Rafael
  (2:52 PM)

Ray-feel.

Robert (Newport News)

Dan, do you think if Floyd already had a loss on his record, this fight gets made?

Dan Rafael
  (2:52 PM)

Interesting question. Not really sure.

J in FLA (Merritt Island, FL)

Is Billy in Peoria saving himself for marriage too?

Jeff (Alabama)

Have you made your pick yet? Zab/Cruz?

Dan Rafael
  (2:54 PM)

Zab by knockout.

robb (north andover, ma)

dan, starting to feel lame for not having been to a live fight. anything mainstream coming up to the new england area?

Dan Rafael
  (2:54 PM)

You should. New England has plenty of smaller shows and some bigger ones at Mohegan Sun or Foxwoods.

Mike (San Diego)

Dan, I know this is your chat, but the freaks need Jorge's prediction for Abregu. He was hyping up Maidana too, before any of us even knew who he was, and we all know about Baldomir.

Dan Rafael
  (2:55 PM)

Jorge you out there my Freak Brother?

Brent (Detroit)

My first was just a few months ago. Abraham-Dirrell in Detroit. Great fight. Lots of Armenians on hand supporting Abraham and Dirrell being a Flint guy had a ton of support. When Dirrell floored Abraham in the 5th my head just about hit the cieling at Joe Louis Arena. Great Fight despite the crazy DQ finish

Tevin (Frisco)

Dan please tell me that the great B.K. will be back in studio tonight.

Dan Rafael
  (2:57 PM)

He is supposed to be, yes.

Nick (Queens, NY)

Dan, did Pacquiao agree to random drug testing up until the day of the fight? Everyone reported that both camps agreed to a fight but Mayweather said he was never going to agree unless Pacquiao agreed up until the day of the fight. I feel like if Pacquiao only agreed to 14 days, then we kinda already know what Floyd's answer will be---and rightfully so!

Dan Rafael
  (2:57 PM)

We do not yet know the specifics of what drug testing he agreed to.

PJ (Fairfield CA)

What sactioning body do you respect most? or are they all equally corrupt?

Dan Rafael
  (2:58 PM)

It's like asking where would I like to be shot -- in the heart, the brain or the back?

John (San Fran)

Dan, why has no one called out Bob Arum for not acting in good faith and taking negotiations to the media?

Dan Rafael
  (2:59 PM)

The negotiations are OVER. The paperwork is with both sides.

J.R (Puerto Rico)

besides pac vs mayweather, wich fight you want to see the most?

Dan Rafael
  (3:02 PM)

I'd like to see Lopez-Gamboa, I'd like to see Wlad-Haye, I'd like to see Cotto-Berto. Would like to see Bute against the Super Six winner. Would like to see Donaire-Darchinyan rematch. Those are a few.

Dan Rafael
  (3:02 PM)

And, of course, I want to see Alexander-Bradley and Khan-Maidana.

Bob (The Poconos)

Ray-Ray, I read an article in which Berto claims he does not know who Mike Jones is? Can you arrange an introduction please? Where do you rank Jones in the WW division?

Dan Rafael
  (3:04 PM)

LOL. I'd be happy to. I think Jones is just on the verge of cracking the top 10 with another nice win.

Floyd's Contract (Floyd's desk)

Please sign me...anybody?

chuzen (st. louis)

is juanma bernabe the frontrunner for Round of the Year?

Dan Rafael
  (3:05 PM)

At this point I think so, the first round.

Jorge (East Los Angeles)

Dan, What's up king freak? I have a new drill sargeant boss, so it;s harder to get on here. I'm excited for the card Saturday, and leave tonight to check it out. I think Bradley will be too much for Abregu. Abregu is a plodder and has major issues cutting off the ring, so I think Bradley will win a pretty easy UD, possibly even a late TKO, because Abregu is very easy to hit. Keep up the good work!

Dan Rafael
  (3:06 PM)

Jorge has spoken.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan,Great job all week esp. w/the HBO/K.Bro controversy. I was wondering if there has been any response from HBO after you posted your article?

Dan Rafael
  (3:06 PM)

I called HBO before I wrote the piece and they offered the statement that I included. That has been their only on the record comment.

Daryl (PA)

Classic Rafael chat!!http://www.usatoday.com/community/chat/0810rafael.htm

Dan Rafael
  (3:08 PM)

Where the heck did you find that. That made me feel old.

JD (DC)

What's the countdown to KISS?

Dan Rafael
  (3:09 PM)

One month and five days until the concert!

Jason (Boston, MA)

How about instead of a series of fights between Bradley, Alexander, Kahn and Maidana, we put them in a Fatal Four-Way?

Dan Rafael
  (3:10 PM)

How about a ladder match like Sunday's PPV?

Seth (MacFarlaneville)

Maybe you can play Danta Claus in the next "Kiss Saves Christmas" episode?

Dan Rafael
  (3:11 PM)

I'm in.

PJ (Fairfield CA)

Do you think brass at Top rank, GBP, HBO or others in the fight game read these chats as a way to guage public perception. This is priceless market research that a firm would charge a lot of money for?

Dan Rafael
  (3:12 PM)

I'm sure some do. They hear what the Freaks say.

Alexandre (Montreal)

Dan, Yvon Michel is saying here that the August 28 card on ESPN with David Lemieux is off and that Lemieux will likely be added to the Pascal-Dawson card on the 14th possibly against Rubio ... have you heard anything about that ?

Dan Rafael
  (3:13 PM)

That is possible, although Lemieux is NOT fighting Rubio. How about a little breaking news -- Rubio will go to Germany and fight Felix Sturm in Sturm's comeback on Sept. 4. That will be announced next week.

Camacho (Yucaipa)

Which hotel you staying at for the Marquez/Diaz fight?

Dan Rafael
  (3:14 PM)

Fight's at Mandalay Bay, so Mandalay Bay it is.

Justin (Sactown,CA)

DTM, gotta bust your chops on this prediction...Dan Rafael: No one heavyweight prospect jumps out, but one to keep an eye on is undefeated Clifford "The Black Rhino" Etienne. He's an exciting fighter to watch. He already 30, but really coming on. You can catch his next fight against Orlin Norris on HBO on Sept. 9.

Dan Rafael
  (3:14 PM)

There was no "prediction" in there. It was merely that Rhino was one to watch, which he was. He didn't make it, but he made some exciting fights for awhile.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

So if the KISS concert is that close..........have you decide (along w/ Mrs. DTM) whether you're going w/makeup or without...?

Dan Rafael
  (3:15 PM)

I think we'll pass on the makeup.

Jelani (LA)

Floyd's camp was fond of saying "it's $50mm, why not just do the drug tests?" If Floyd passes, are they really going to try to justify passing on that money because they're annoyed by Arum's countdown clock?? I'm a huge Floyd fan, but if he passes on this, it's going to be tough to keep being one...

Jeff (Gilbert, AZ)

Dan,If Floyd decides to sit out the year (favorable spin) does he slip in your P4P ranking if 10-3 keep winning immpressively?

Dan Rafael
  (3:17 PM)

It's possible.

John H (Augusta GA)

Hi Dan , awesome notebook. I know you're getting hit full force with Pac May questions today so I figure I'll throw my question in the hat. Being with the way Bob is , do you think its true that the blood testing terms and split were really agreed upon or could that be falsely reported by Bob? 2ndly, with this being the deadline, will it come to light as to why Floyd didn't sign for the fight or what terms he deemed were necessary for the fight to happen that was not met? Thanks again for another good week of awesome reporting!

Dan Rafael
  (3:19 PM)

Here is what I THINK based on talking to various folks around this fight: I believe Arum/Haymon worked out a deal with Ross that included whatever split they came up with, the drug testing and such and they were done. And then Al had to take it to Floyd and sell him on it. It appears that he may have been unable to do that, but we won't know for sure until the deadline.

John (Jersey)

I'm an 18 minute train ride from the Prudential Center... how's the rest of the Zab card... worth the in-person trip, or just watching the telecast?

Dan Rafael
  (3:20 PM)

Go! Go and support live boxing and have fun. And record the telecast so you can see the studio stuff later.

Khalil (Atlanta, GA)

Floyd's new motto: "Hard work. Dedication. Cowardice."

Dan Rafael
  (3:20 PM)

Ouch.

Mark (Orlando)

Your best nickname: Danos De Piedra!!!!

Paul B (NY, NY)

Dan- a moment to reminsice. Last week's chat was epic!!! Getting the minute by minute update on the court hearing was awesome. One of my favorite chats ever! Thanks again.

Dan Rafael
  (3:22 PM)

Glad you appreciated it. I have gotten a lot of positive feedback on that. Happy it worked out well. And when the chat was over I wrote my story.

JB (Toronto)

Just read a few lines of that old chat. Same boxing knowledge but less flair and creativity in your answers. You've developed your showmanship quite nicely. Like watching Rocky Maivia transform into The Rock. Oh yeah, my first fight was Eric Lucas vs Dingaan Thobela but I didn't let that stop me from becoming a full-fledged freak.

Dan Rafael
  (3:24 PM)

Nice.

Scott (Bloomington,MN)

Hey Dan, What did you think of the Froch vs Abraham fight site?

Dan Rafael
  (3:25 PM)

Seems like a fair resolution to the issue and a great place for a fight and they have casinos too, so it'll be like a European Las Vegas fight.

EJ (NM)

So Maidana is still the Interim WBA champ at 140? When is the WBA going to make Khan fight him?

Dan Rafael
  (3:26 PM)

They won't. They'll collect their checks.

The Clock (Top Rank Website)

Still pointlessly ticking.....

Dan!!! (Amsterdan)

So, Marquez is fighting at DANDALAY BAY?

Dan Rafael
  (3:27 PM)

LEGENDARY!!!!!!!!!!!! My new favorite.

Bob Arum (parts unknown)

i'm going to deadline you on this chat. wrap it up by 3am

Joseph (San Antonio, TX)

Dan, your opinion on the mainstream public's perception of Floyd if he doesn't accept the fight.

Dan Rafael
  (3:29 PM)

I think both sides will get grief although it appears as though this time it's Mayweather's fault if the fight doesn't happen.

Horn (Vegas)

Floyd is logged on to toprank.com and he's throwing money at the clock as Rogers jibberishly chants in the background.

Brent (Detroit)

This is so much better than working. And it would appear from across the office to the naked eye that I am actually doing some work. What a treat.

Dan Rafael
  (3:30 PM)

Nice. Don't forget the whole Alt/Tab thing if your boss comes over to you.

Chris (Vancouver BC)

Hey Dan. My cat and I were play fighting in the back yard today on my lunch break. Then she stratched me pretty good and I had to stop the fight. My cat is now the WBC Silver Champion.

Dan Rafael
  (3:30 PM)

For a small sanctioning fee, of course.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

(Floyd haiku)Arum's clock ticks down,Unless he tests during fight,I will duck Manny.

John (San Fran)

Dan, I have a corner desk and no one can see my screen...however, thanks to you I can Alt/Tab should my boss fly by the back window. Thanks, learn something new everyday

Frank (Clifton Park NY)

Dan, do you think Floyd even bothers to respond? I say he just ignores the whole deal and we dont hear from him for a long long time if ever again

Dan Rafael
  (3:32 PM)

I doubt he'll respond unless it's to accept the fight.

Homer (OH)

For Mac using Freaks: Command/H is the Mac version of Alt/Tab

Dan Rafael
  (3:33 PM)

Impressive. Now I think we have our bases covered.

eddie (minneapolis)

dan, the other week you had kind words for the broadcaster jim grey. still feel the same way after his part in "the decision"? personally, i think he really compromised his integrity as a journalist.

Dan Rafael
  (3:34 PM)

Jim did not cover himself with glory. His first question should have been where are you going LeBron? THEN he could have followed up with all the other questions.

Jose Sulaiman (WBC Headquarters)

The Doomsday Clock on the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists is the Deadline Clock Super Champion. The Top Rank Clock is only the Deadline Clock regular Champion. Please adjust your fee schedules accordingly.

Dan Rafael
  (3:34 PM)

That is some funny stuff.

Nick (Harrisburg, PA)

Could you imagine if Floyd had half the heart of an Arturo Gatti...

Dan Rafael
  (3:35 PM)

No.

Antonio Tarver (DeSoto Civic Center)

You got any excuses tonight Floyd?

Dave (UK)

Hey Dan, wheres your usual bs column on David Haye? Taking a break this week to write crap Mayweather? I look forward to it...

Dan Rafael
  (3:38 PM)

Keep making excuses for the Ducker Haye. Keep drinking the Kool Aid.

Jorge (Anaheim,CA)

Any prediction for Marquez-Diaz ppv buys? Seeing a lot of commercials and preview shows.

Dan Rafael
  (3:39 PM)

I am told they need about 110,000 to break to even. I think they have a great chance to exceed 200,000.

Erik (Austin, TX)

You could make the argument that the first failed negotiation was equally the fault of both fighters, but is it fair to say all the blame should go on Mayweather for this potential failure?

Dan Rafael
  (3:40 PM)

Can't say yet until we get some details.

Steve (NYC)

What is going on with Ray Austin and the lawsuit?

Dan Rafael
  (3:40 PM)

My understanding is that he dropped it and the WBC put him back at No. 1.

Mike (Pa)

Are u in studio tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (3:40 PM)

No, on via Skype. Next week I'll be in the studio.

miguel (los angeles)

Wait a minute there is actually someone who is defending David Haye? Ok I guess ill cross that of the list of things I thought I would never see

kevin C. (san jose, ca)

does the maidana fight have a u.s. TV?

Dan Rafael
  (3:42 PM)

No, that fight will be on in Argentina.

Jay (MD)

Dan you are all over the place? On this chat, being replayed on ESPNEWS, and later on Sportscenter and FNF.Are you loaded up on Sprite or what?

Dan Rafael
  (3:42 PM)

No, but I am strongly considering a Frappuchino.

Dave, NJ [via mobile]

Maybe the Maidana fight could land on Solo Boxeo?

Dan Rafael
  (3:44 PM)

No, that is not happening.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Looking forward to read the old chat transcript on USA today when this live chat is over. I'm assuming that you proposed to your old company that you do an internet chat... am I right? Or did they suggest it?

Dan Rafael
  (3:45 PM)

I don't recall. I think they might have suggested it and then I suggested we do it every week.

Starbucks (Dan's Neighborhood)

LET'S GET A FRAPPUCHINO OVER TO THE RAFAELS, STAT!

Dan Rafael
  (3:46 PM)

Vanilla please.

JB (Toronto)

How do you like Mikey Garcia's chances against Salido?

Dan Rafael
  (3:47 PM)

Good fight to me. Salido good puncher and experienced, but Garcia is young and strong and a good puncher. Really think that's an interesting fight.

Jimmy (Mobile, AL)

DTM- I disagree a bit that Top Rank really wanted this fight. If Arum really wanted to make it, he would have stuck with the gag order. It seems to me that he wants Manny to fight Cotto or Margarito in-house, maybe make Pac-Mayweather for next year, and just wanted to position it as Mayweather's fault with the deadline.

Dan Rafael
  (3:49 PM)

Don't you get it? He did stay silent. Only when the deal had been in Floyd's hands for awhile, a deal Floyd's own adviser took to him, did Arum go public. With the clock up, they know Floyd isn't taking the fight and they have nothing to lose.

chuzen (st. louis)

this chat has been going on so long that valuev was able to stop mid-chat to take a massive poop and come back to see the chat was still going strong

Dan Rafael
  (3:50 PM)

These are my readers.

Big Mike (Chicago)

I hate Floyd. I really do. I think is a great talent, but he's a punk! I hope Pacman doesn't give him the fight now. Screw him

Dan Rafael
  (3:50 PM)

Tell us how you really feel.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Nothing better than chatting in my underwear on a lazy Summer afternoon, while I ignore calls from my girlfriend. THIS IS THE LIFE.

Dan Rafael
  (3:51 PM)

Too much info.

corey (westwick)

Dan I feel like Pacquiao has met all the requirements to make this fight happen Floyd is a good fighter but has a history of ducking fighters Casamayor,Freitas,Dorin,Cotto,Margarito so its not a shock if this fight never comes off

Charles (DFW)

What if Floyd takes the fight at 11:59 and tries to spin it as a manhood thing?

Dan Rafael
  (3:52 PM)

Then we can all rejoice.

Everardo (Chicago)

Danesthesialogist--so much boxing on tv this weekend Oh My! Do you think Montiel has an easy go tomorrow?

Dan Rafael
  (3:52 PM)

Concepcion is a tough dude but Montiel SHOULD win.

Camacho (Yucaipa)

Just read Angulo's quote. "Im going to tear into Acline like a bowl of kibbles' n bits" HAHA Good to see him picking up english and talking smack!

Eric P (Saratoga Springs, NY)

Danimal,- Have you ever been to Saratoga to see the ponies? You should come, we can drink beer and talk boxing with knuckleheads

Dan Rafael
  (3:54 PM)

Dude where you been? I used to work at The Saratogian and lived walking distance from the track. Been there MANY MANY MANY times.

JB (Toronto)

A question about another kid from your prospects list (which is great by the way). Rios against Peterson. Am I crazy for thinking Rios is knocking Peterson out?

Dan Rafael
  (3:54 PM)

Yes you are.

Sean (NY)

Dan, I'm not saying last week's Showtime card was bad, but Donaire and Lopez's victories seemed almost certain as soon as those fights were made. It got me thinking: Showtime should sit down with Shaw and Arum and say "unless you make the fight between Donaire and Darchinyan, you're not getting another slot on Showtime."Why don't the networks put their foot down? They let promoters walk all over them imho.

Dan Rafael
  (3:55 PM)

I had no problem with Lopez-Concepcion. Fine fight. And turned out to be an exciting shootout. The Donaire fight was a joke from day 1.

Dan Rafael
  (3:58 PM)

OK, Freaks, we have weights from Mexico courtesy of the Bat Email. Montiel and Concepcion were both 118 pounds.

suruj (London, england)

we have a few good prospects on this side of the pond like cleverly, kell brook, degale, frankie gavin , do you think any of them can be world level

Dan Rafael
  (3:59 PM)

There are several good prospects in the UK. I like Cleverly and Brook. Gavin I think has a big future. DeGale has talent, I just don't really like his style, which I find boring.

Choco (New Jersey)

I am looking forward to watching Velasquez fight tonight - he should be moved towards a title fight soon. Future champ?

Dan Rafael
  (4:01 PM)

Velasquez is definitely a top prospect. Lots of talent and good to watch. He headlines on Telefutura.

Ross (Indianapolis)

I'm not sure which is more disturbing, the Freaks' obsession with the bodily functions of Marquez and Valuev, or the constant accusations that DTM is a "hater" of whatever fighter they like...

Dan Rafael
  (4:03 PM)

I would say the obession with Valuev's poop. Easily the most disturbing thing ever in a chat except the dude who once asked about why fights dont end on time is it related to the tv schedule.

Eric P (Saratoga Springs, NY)

Dan, I consider us brothers now. Just saying.

Dan Rafael
  (4:03 PM)

Relax.

Brent (Toronto)

I am really looking foward to the Lebedev-Alexeev fight - Freak or Moron?

Dan Rafael
  (4:03 PM)

Freak.

Omar (Oakland)

Hey Dan, I have been following the chats for years and the story that Jake Lamotta introduced himself as Robert Deniro nearly gave me a heart attack. Priceless. Happy 89th to the Originial Raging Bull las Sat!!

Dan Rafael
  (4:06 PM)

Indeed.

John (NJ)

Vitali is dangerously close to entering a "bum of the month" stage

Dan Rafael
  (4:07 PM)

Why because he fought ONE weak opponent since he came back? You're on drugs.

miguel (los angeles)

How hot is it where you are Dan, here in LA it is burning.

Dan Rafael
  (4:08 PM)

In the mid-90s here and brutal.

Mike (Los Angeles)

"Dan Rafael: I rank Roy Jones No. 1 in the USA TODAY rankings. Mosley is No. 2, Trinidad is No. 3." Man, that was a time ago... 1995?

Dan Rafael
  (4:09 PM)

That chat is probably from around 2002.

Brent (Detroit)

Back in April. That Volcano Eruption in Iceland that covered half of Europe was actually just one of Valuev's farts.

Dan Rafael
  (4:09 PM)

I have no words other than to say these are my readers.

Mark (Brooklyn)

If Angulo win whats next's?

Dan Rafael
  (4:10 PM)

Not sure but like we've talked about, Gary Shaw would love to make Cotto-Angulo.

steve (syracuse)

i agree about the weird obsession with valuev's poops. thanks to this chat, whenever i see him or hear his name i think of how big his poops could be and if they come out with hair on their backs.

Dan Rafael
  (4:10 PM)

OK, you're banned. That is just ridiculous.

Jigga (New Jersey)

Dan, what do you think of Marco Antonio Rubio as an opponent for David Lemiuex

Dan Rafael
  (4:11 PM)

Like I said before (which I actually did as opposed to Mayweather), that is not happening. Rubio is fighting Sturm.

Ross (Indianapolis)

Do you know if Bob will be taking questions from the press during the conference call tonight, or if he will just be explaining his side of the deal?

Dan Rafael
  (4:11 PM)

He will take questions.

Steve (LA)

Correction: Haye is a Turducken

Dan Rafael
  (4:12 PM)

Impressive use of a culinary delight in some quarters.

Jorge (Anaheim,CA)

Did you see the Alvarez fight last week and what did you think?

Dan Rafael
  (4:13 PM)

I did see it and I thouht Alarez looked very, very good. He beat the hell out Cuello, who had given Chavez a very tough fight.

Sergio (Washington, D.C.)

Man, Floyd is ducking if it don't get made!

Nick (Harrisburg, PA)

Dan, on a scale of 1-100 how annoyed are you by Mayweather's antics at this point...i mean i get taking a stance or even hating the other promoter...but at this point he's hurting the sport more than helping...what a legacy to leave behind

Dan Rafael
  (4:14 PM)

I'm not annoyed becuase I expect it.

Fredrik (Boston)

Is there any chance Bob does not explode in anger tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (4:15 PM)

One never knows does one?

Joe (RI)

I'd much rather watch a klitschko-hayden panettiere sex tape, than watch him fight another game, but over matched Heavyweight

Tom E (Jersey City, NJ)

June 11th, 2010. A day that will live on in freak infamy. Shawn from Bronxville asks "Did you ever wonder the size of Valuev poop? He must drop *BOMBS*" - for the freak historians out there

Roy (Reno)

Don't see why everyone is up in arms with Mayweather. This is his MO. This is precisely the reason so many people hate him.

Dan Rafael
  (4:16 PM)

You're right.

Mike (Los Angeles)

If the fight is not made I say:- Sergio Martinez/ Floyd Mayweather at 154- Pacquiao/ Berto 147We won't be as mad if this happens

Dan Rafael
  (4:17 PM)

Although I want to see them fight each other, if they aren't those are quality replacements.

Mike S. (San Antonio)

Wut up Dan...wut u think of the PTI and ATH horn guys calling Mayweather a "coward"?

Dan Rafael
  (4:18 PM)

I think that's a little over the top even for them.

Rodrir (Orlando)

Trinidad vs. Julian Jackson at 154?

Dan Rafael
  (4:19 PM)

BOMBS AWAY!

chuzen (st. louis)

it's been mentioned before, but if pac may isnt made, do you feel team martinez will make an agreesive run at floyd?

Dan Rafael
  (4:19 PM)

If Pac isn't made I am very, very doubtful that Floyd will fight again this year.

Dave (Cincinnati, OH)

I know this is petty, but could you ask ESPN producers to find some new clips to show of Manny and Floyd when they're talking about them? They show the same damn clips of them hitting the mitts over and over and over...

Dan Rafael
  (4:20 PM)

OK, Freaks, thanks for the chat today. Another good four-hours plus. Check out ESPNEWS at about 5:20 and also FNF tonight. And stay tuned for THE DECISION. Enjoy the weekend fights and report back here after tomorrow's HBO show for a little late-night Rafael After Dark action. Peace.
