Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:02 PM)

Greetings people and pets. Thanks for stopping by.

DanB (Nashville)

Paul,Is there any chance that the Titans pick up a veteran RB in July or August or are they happy with Ringer and 1 of the undrafted rookies as back-ups?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:02 PM)

After they see what they have, it's possible. Less likely, I think, If CJ is back.

Clay (Jacksonville, FL)

What's up PK, Latest ticket sales numbers per Teal Teal and Tony Boselli as of last night are 5,500 remaining tickets to sell. This is of course factoring the remaining group sales (8,000) the team has said they will get sold. With 6 weeks till Sept. 1st, that leaves us around 900/week to lift the blackouts on a season ticket basis. Still a tough number, but possible to say the least considering the work done by team and community thus far. My question is simple....If Jacksonville can get these tickets moved and sell out the genral bowl prior to the season stating on a season ticket basis, then how big of shock will that be for you and the rest of the National media? Thanks and I appreciate your work for the AFCS

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:04 PM)

It'll be a shock. I am shocked the way you are talking. The team says it'll get 8,000 in group sales sold and that's that? why do we presume that to be correct? And 900 a week is a lot. They sell out more than a handful this year, I'll be impressed and they will get praise on the blog for sure.

Brian (Boro)

I heard CJ is getting a 2.5 million pay increase for this year. Does that mean is his now showing up for training camp? has he said anything about him being happy with the deal for this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

Heard? What's been reported is that the Titans have offered to move $2.5 million in escalators from later in the contract and make it bonus money now. No word from his side on what they think of that.

Finley (via mobile)

Sagging campaign? Dude, you told me we'd win in a landslide. We haven't been communicating well and I feel left in the dark.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

You lag well behind in TV commercials, and I told you we don't have the cash for that.

Rob (Kentucky)

With all the issues the Titans players have had this off season, ie D. Morgan speeding and driving on suspended license, VY bar room shoving match, Chris Sims arrested for DUI of mary jane and then the linebacker (his name escapes me at the moment) suspended for PED's, whats the chance the orginazation would be reprimanded? I've heard that teams could be penalized draft picks or money if they cant control their players.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:06 PM)

McRath's PED suspension is in a different area than the personal conduct policy stuff. I can't see three first-time offenders -- one who was speeding -- resulting in some sort of league sanction.

daniel(houston,Tx) [via mobile]

How many wins do you think its going to take for the texans to make the playoffs this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:07 PM)

Ten.

danny (New Jersey)

Paul, as everyone saw last night, Chris Johnson and Vince Young were seated right behind Terrell Owens at the ESPY's. Certainly meant nothing but the three of them on the field at the same time on the same team would be fun to watch. The Titans have a history of taking fliers on older washed up receivers (Moulds). Doubt it would happen but......

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:07 PM)

Moulds does not equal "a history." Moulds and Pickens don't even amount to "a history." TO won't be playing in Nashville.

Sulaiman (New Jersey)

Fastest play in the AFC SOuth is?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:08 PM)

Chris Johnson, no question.

Kevin Costner (Hollywood)

would you prefer to continue covering football 12 months a year like you currently do, or, would you rather ESPN assigned you to cover baseball in the offseason?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:09 PM)

Football please. I like my baseball to be as a fan not a worker.

Tom (Chicagoland)

Paul,How do the Titans see Jacob Ford? Do they think he can be a full-time DE, or will it be Hayes and Morgan playing most of the time, with Ford playing the same nickel rusher role he's played in the past?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:09 PM)

No one is going to be a "full-time" end the way Vanden Bosch was. So the reps will be split up. They see Ford as a very effective rusher.

Tyler (St. Paul, MN)

Paul, How do you see the Vikings doing this year compared to last years heartbreaker? (Favre permitting of course)

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

I think they will be good. But I might like Green Bay even better in the division.

Paul the Octopus (Germany)

I know you don't do predictions Less Renowned Paul, so feel free to contact me if you want.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

You got it done. Leaving on top, like Costanza. I should leave this chat right now.

Chris (Grand Rapids, MI)

I haven't heard anything about VY and the Commissioner...was any punishment handed down?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:11 PM)

If it was handed down, you would have heard about it. Don't expect a suspension.

chris (somewhere)

Nashville have a market for an MLB team?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:11 PM)

Definitely not.

David Williams (West End)

So... are you interested in the Vandy job?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:12 PM)

I'm interested in you dressing like a man with your title and power.

Darius (Spam Diego)

Paul K... I predicted the current DB and LB situation for the Titans almost 2 offseasons ago... I want recognition...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:13 PM)

Wait -- you saw guys getting old and having expiring contracts, and you said the team would need to replace them? You ARE better than Paul the Octopus. What vision. Teams will call soon to try to hire you.

Kevin Costner (Hollywood)

What's your stance on dogs in people clothing when it comes to Finley?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:13 PM)

Not permitted.

RoscoHawk (Nashville, Tn)

Hey Paul. What do you attribute the big drop of in play of Cortland Finnegan and Michael Griffin last season? Was the transition to Chuck Cecil as new DC a big issue and do you see CC doing a much better job this year. Love the blog.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:14 PM)

Less of a rush hurt. Griffin was horrible, and that was primarily on him. Finnegan got a little lost and then hurt, but at least he recovered.

Brian (Jacksonville)

Per the CFO of the Jaguars, Bill Prescott, the Jaguars have written/ verbal commitments from local businesses that equate to 8000 in group sales per game. Why am I doing your work for you?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

Verbal commitments? That's how the Packers sell their tickets. Nods and handshakes.

Zack (San Angelo)

Do you see the Colts-Texans game being a major early test for the Texans? I know it's early, but I think it is almost a must-win, just to show that they can win games in the division.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:16 PM)

Of course it's a major test. But how can a Week One game be must-win? You lose it and your season is over? Call in the backups for the next 15?

Clay (Charlotte)

Paul, have to ask, do you shave the dome for looks or because you might be missing a little up top?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:16 PM)

Completely for looks. All the cool kids are doing it. I have a full head of hair if I want it. (Kidding.)

Bozilla (Nashville)

PK, From McNair to VY to CJ, those of us in Nashville have seen our share of immature, me-first, behavior. They all have one thing in common - counsel from an incredibly immature, insecure, me-first person, Mike Mu. How come those of you on the inside never call this guy out?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:19 PM)

I've said I can't understand their attraction to him. His work with those guys isn't a public thing, it's a private thing. It's not like people are spilling what sort of influence he has. Fisher threw him hard under the bus after the VY-leaves-his-house-with-a-gun night. Fall guy from outside was perfect for the coach there. But you raise an excellent issue.

Clay (Charlotte)

Not exactly sure how Mr. Costner keeps getting work...anywho, rookie to make the biggest impact in the South or is it way to early to speculate?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

Early. But I've speculated Alualu. He should start from the start and can be disruptive right from the first whistle.

Simon Kuharsky (via mobile)

Hey pops, I've decided I want that Paul the Octopus as a pet. Can I get it for my birthday? It's only just a few months away.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:21 PM)

You already have a pet and you need to try to get him to the governor's mansion.

Charlie (Brentwood, TN)

Would you rather play catch with Ray Kinsella or 18 holes with Roy "Tin Cup" McAvoy?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:23 PM)

Catch. The pull of "Field of Dreams" is too strong for me.

Justin (Durango CO)

Considering the Jags play Denver, San Diego, Philly and the Colts to start the season, is 0-4 a real possibility?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

I don't find Denver daunting, and Philly early on will hardly be invincible.

Jed (Indy)

What kind of year do you see Bob Sanders having? Hurt again?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

Hard to imagine 16 games.

Tim (TX)

I see you like the Packers over the Vikings, but have they really done anything to get better than the Vikings? They got beat twice by the Vikes last year.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:25 PM)

If they had the exact same teams and played again, Green Bay could win. Honestly. Last year's results and the moves made since those games don't go into a computer and spit out a predictable result.

Greg (Indy)

How scary is having Reggie Wayne, Austin Collie, Anthony Gonzalez, and Pierre Garcon on the field at one time with Peyton and Joe Addai in the backfield? Can that be stopped?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:25 PM)

It can be great. But nothing is unstoppable.

steve (houston )

Long time first time. Do the texans have a legit shot at the seed or will they only get a wild card berth

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

I can't see them winning the division.

fitz (Ponte vedra beach)

Its fantasy football time and Matt Schaub help win me a title last year. Now what Texan RB do you think will have the biggest impact? I keep reading Arian Foster as the starter but what about Tate and Slaton?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

I would steer away from Houston RBs as primary options, and I'd draft them in this order later: Slaton, Tate and Foster.

Bozilla (Nashville)

OK, I'm felling cocky now since you liked that last one. Today must be accountability Thursday... Seems to me like marijuana is a much bigger problem in the NFL than anyone admits to. It was the issue with LenDale White in Nashville and in Seattle yet nobody has made much of a story out of it. Perhaps its taboo as a professional journalist paid to cover the NFL. Do you see it as something that is a bigger problem than most people realize?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:30 PM)

A guy smokes it and fails a test, he winds up in the league's program. I don't know that it's a bigger issue in the NFL by much than it is in society in general. LenDale White smoking pot isn't taboo or an underplayed story. It's unsurprising, frankly. You want me aghast over it?

Jim (Chicago)

Can Ringer put up 1,200+ yards and 10 TDs if given the chance?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:30 PM)

I don't see it.

Jon (NYC)

Paul, non-AFC south question if I may...What are the Jets going to do when the PSLs dont sell out? Have you heard any rumblings within the league?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

What do you mean what are they going to do? They're going to play in front of some empty seats.

Dan (Richmond)

Paul, you keep distracting me from my final that I have to study for in 3 hours! But it's worth it. Anywho, I have a question about Jared Cook. Have you seen any improvement on him so far this offseason? I know it's downtime but do you think he'll make a better showing at camp?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

He should be better. But he wasn't above a bad drop wide open down the middle late in OTAs. Tons of potential. Time to show he can live up to it.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:32 PM)

To anyone asking for "news" on Player X. Teams are in shutdown mode now. There is nothing new on anyone since OTAs that we know about.

The Jack (Duval)

Just wanted to let you know that Duval will get the tickets sold and I will have teal in my belly....See you in Week 4 PK

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

Is this Duval thing going to catch on outside Duval? Should we all go around shouting the name of our counties? DAVIDSON over here, Davidson! Or is it a way of disguising Jacksonville?

Simon Kuharsky (via mobile)

Ok then, if we can't have Paul the Octopus as a pet can we at least have him for dinner?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

You are not quite that advanced an eater. How about we keep working on green veggies and build up to octopus?

Collin Franks (Decatur, AL)

How are Colts going to do this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

They are going to be quite good.

fitz (Ponte vedra beach)

Colt RB question. Since Addai is in a contract year do you think they will give Donald Brown a bigger role to see what he can do? Or is Addai still the workhouse? How do you see that playing out.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:35 PM)

I think they work with what they have this year and worry about next year neat year. If Addai is better, and I suspect he will be, he will get more of the work. He could be back too, I don't feel like there will be a big market for him after this season.

Sparky (San Diego)

Will all of the Titans' distractions in the offseason affect them during the regular season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:36 PM)

How so? If you mean will players be looking at Vince Young in the huddle thinking, 'He got cited for getting into a fight at a strip club months ago,' no, absolutely not.

DT (Tacoma, WA)

Anyway you see CJ not taking the offer and showing up for camp? If true, it is four times what he was going to get for this year. A pretty substantial increase when you take into account whatever deal he gets after 2010-2011 season.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:37 PM)

With that offer, the Titans got all the hand. CJ said at the ESPYs it's in the team's court. It's not. It's in his court.

Simon Kuharsky (via mobile)

But if I do get Finley in the governor's mansion, can I get a new pet?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

That seems reasonable as he will be too busy to play around.

Dan (LA)

Who is this Player X and what laboratory was he developed in? Do you think he could turn around the Jags franchise and sell a few seats?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

I cannot tell you enough about what this guy has done since OTAs. I've been watching him and talking with him every day. Strength gains like an angry Hulk. The football intelligence of a football playing robot from 2110. A magic solution for whatever team can get him.

Sanka (Jacksonville)

What's your take on the news about Eugene Monroe being down 29 pounds to 300 and Eben Britton down to 310, with both being "rocked up" according to the strength and conditioning coach? Jags solidified on the outside of the line now?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

What's not to like? They're both going to be very good players for a long time.

Julian (San Francisco)

A lot of people talk about Super Bowl losses causing hangovers that carry over into the following season. How do you see this affecting the Colts in 2010, if at all?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

Not at all. The Saints will suffer much more of a dropoff than the Colts this season.

Player X (via mobile)

Dude, tell your chatters that I write a column each month for ESPN The Magazine.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

So noted. My bad. I should have used a different letter in my example.

Mike Peterson (ATL)

AI started the phenomenon on MNF a few years back PK.. Welcome to Duval, Prepare to Be Hit. It helps when the county is the city and vice versa.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

You think America has any clue what Duval is?

Chris (Indy)

What are the chances Blair White makes the Colts roster

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

There is one back end WR spot up for grabs. Or he could be a practice squad guy.

Tom (Chicagoland)

Who's the favorite as Jags' #2 wideout right now, Thomas, Dillard, Osgood, or Williamson?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

I think it'd be Thomas, Williamson, Dillard, Osgood. Underwood in there too, maybe second or third even.

Denny (Akron)

I know that Peyton Manning has been very healthy up until now, but so was Brady before his injury. The Colts have nothing near someone like Cassel if Manning goes down. thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

Cassel was a miracle scenario. If you have one of the league's top players and he goes down for an extended period of time, you're finished for the year.

Matt Beeskie (San Marcos, TX)

Ok PK, if you're Rick Smith. What do you do about your FS problem at this moment? OR what would you have done? (draft, FA, etc...)

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:47 PM)

I would have done something more than leave myself with Wilson, Barber and Nolan as my options.

Mike (Ohio)

Do you think there is any regret (strong word, I know) on the part of the Colts for not holding on to Justin Forsett?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:47 PM)

They are not losing a wink of sleep over that.

Tom (Duval)

Clearly your jealous that your county name sucks compared to Duval. ANYWAYS what do you think it takes for Del Rio to keep his job this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

I don't know about W-L. But to have a chance, he needs to be organized and have the team in control and performing consistently. They need to be playing better at the end of the season than they did at the start.

Jesse (Newark)

When you say that when a top player goes down for the year, you are finished, do you mean just QBs?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

I mean every team should have one or two players that qualify as irreplaceable -- predominantly skills guys. And if they go down, I don't expect you to be able to replace them. Manning and Freeney. Schaub and AJ. CJ. MJD.

Nate (Indy)

How well does the "free market" approach to a position battle often play out during camp? For instance, the Colts are taking that approach with the O-Line - having a bunch of players just "competing in the open market" for roster spots. Seems a great way to get the best mediocre players at a position.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:52 PM)

It certainly works better than anointing one of that bunch as the starter in the offseason. But not as well as actually going out and getting someone who would be a clear-cut starter.

Mr. Duval (904)

Do i care if America knows? Duval is chanted within the stadium.... which is in Jacksonville.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

That's a way to help with your national image! Come up with something clicky and local that you still haven't explained and bring it to prominence.

Jon (NJ)

How would you rank the top 5 teams in the AFC right now as far as likelihood to get to the big game?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:55 PM)

Controversy creator! Right now I'm going to say Baltimore, Indy, New England, San Diego, Miami. But that can change in five minutes.

STu (VA)

How healthy is David Thornton gonna be at the start of the regular season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:55 PM)

I would hope he'd be fine then. If not, then perhaps never again. They need to squeeze four games out of him.

Shane (Los Angeles, CA)

PK: Offense or Defense, which will be the bigger contributor to the Titans' success this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:55 PM)

Offense, provided CJ is there.

eric (denver)

can you address why it takes some players years "for the light to come on" while others pick up offensive assignments right away? is it intelligence, study habits, coaching??? found your piece on hawk interesting.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:56 PM)

All of the above. Why are some people at your work place better than others despite getting the job with good potential? Why do some have good years and bad years? I think it's a lot like real life situations.

DT (Tacoma, WA)

Excluding San Diego, who would you say the AFC South's toughest shared opponent is going to be this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

Best of NFC East. Probably Dallas.

STu (VA)

Tennessee is gonna get a wild card spot...guarantee it

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

So much at stake for you if it doesn't come true.

Peggy (Nashville)

Considering how weak the Titans were at LB, do you see Rennie Curran getting a lot of playing time?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

I see him getting none outside of some goal line/ four linebacker stuff so long as Witherspoon, Tulloch and McRath stay healthy and Thornton is OK for first four.

Chris Johnson (LA)

How much bargaining power will this new ESPY get me? Do you follow me on Twitter?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

I do. Sent you a question today you can feel free to answer anytime.

Ed (Arkansas)

Just read your bit on Lavelle Hawkins. Is this just another bit of over-excited off-season hype, or is this potentially a real improvement? Titans coaches had a lot of nice things to say last year about Chris Davis and Paul Williams figuring it out, and yet Chris Davis was cut in preseason (admittedly due to DUI) and Paul Williams never materialized on the field. What are your expectations for Hawkins?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:01 PM)

I think there is more to it than there was with those guys. But Roby starred in OTA season once and didn't make the team. So handle info with care.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:02 PM)

Well folks, that was as lovely as it was brisk. No chat next week. See you end of the month. Cheers!
