Let's do this!
is desean jackson going to do good this year
I think he will do well, but I think he could drop a bit in production. As was the case with almost the entire Philly O last year, he was very dependent on the big play. True bomb guy. Can that keep up at such a high rate? I doubt it. Plus, Philly was much less West Coast last year than they will be with Kolb. More short quick throws. Run after the catch. I expect Maclin's numbers to spike and D-Jax's to drop off just a bit. McNabb was excellent at finding him deep-often when the play broke down.
Hey Matt. Love your work. How do you see the secondary of the Cowboys playing out? The starting CBs are probably one of the best pair in the NFL but all together with the safeties (Ball and Sensabaugh) do you see the making of an elite defense considering the strength of the front seven. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Thanks for the kind words. I love the front seven and very much like the top 3 CBs-especially Jenkins. I see Safety as a weakness overall and I would worry if there were a CB injury. But all in all, most Ds are in far worse shape. D Ware is the key to the pass D. Ratliff is a real difference maker as an interior pass rusher too, but Ware is a very special player who makes everyone (Spencer/The Coverage Men) much better. I see Dallas a Top 10 D.
The Tampa Bay Bucs have two players in our secondary in corner back Aquib Talib and safety Tanard Jackson. I think both are playmakers and are overrated. I can easily see both haveing "break out" seasons and being the tops at their possitions in the nfl. What do you think of the two?
I assume you mean UNDERrated. If so, I agree. You have to understand just how poor that pass rush was last season. Both are up and comers. Jackson is a tough guy with excellent anticipation and coverage skills for deep patrol. Talib is a gambler, but has great tools and is coming into his own. Both are playmakers. Both are building blocks for that secondary.
With teams allocating many resources to scouting college players, how does a Mike Wallace, Tashard Choice or Shonn Greene fall through the cracks?
It isn't like those guys were 7th round picks or undrafted free agents though. All were pretty high selections. Remember, RBs fall too. There are a LOT of RBs out there and most teams would wisely use higher picks on other positions. Plus, RBs don't play long. The entire draft is very important and the good teams get value throughout. Sometimes guys will out play their draft slot. Imperfect science.
MW: Whats your take on Mawae? Do you think the owners are blocking him out? On a side note, do you see him as an upgrade to Sendlein with the Cards?
You do get that feeling, huh? But, is there really a big market for a very old center whose game has fallen off tremendously? I bet he ends up with a team, but right now, I think Sendlein is the better player of the two. However, it does worry me as to how Sendlein (a smaller guy) will fit in Zona's new run heavy old school Pittsburgh rushing attack. But, in his favor, outside of A Franklin, there are not big time NTs in that division that he has to face.
I know everyone wants to talk about the Super Bowl let down, but do you really see the Saints not winning that division and winning 11 or 12 games?
Our predictions will be due soon and the more I think about it, the less likely I am to put NOrls in the post season. Can they make as many HUGE plays on D? I really don't like their front seven either. And I do think a hangover is a very real thing...esp in that town! Not sure yet and I see quite a few strong teams in the NFC, but leaning towards picking ATL to win that division. But I picked ATL last year too!
Desean will have at least 1300 yards and 12 td's he was open so many times and Mcnabb didnt get him the ball watch the films
He was open a lot and I think Kolb will be an upgrade over McNabb. But I see the system changing too. Less deep passing. Get it out quick. West Coast-which McNabb didn't do so well. In turn, the nature of his skill set doesn't lend itself to as much success as he had statistically a year ago. It isn't a knock on the player, but the situation has changed. And...watch you tone.
M-Dub you might think i've got too much time on my hands after reading this: if Cromartie returns to form & Wilson is as good as advertised, would the Jets look to resign Cromartie
Too early to speculate and yes, too much time on your hands for that one! I don't think they can even answer that, esp with Revis' contract situation. I do know that Revis is light years better than either-which isn't a knock on Cromartie or Wilson. I also expect Cromartie to fit in very well and get his hands on the ball with some regularity...then, look out!
What's the most that Browns fans can realistically hope for this year? 7 wins and the development of young guys like Haden and Hardesty?
Yes, but change that number to 5. Still....QB????
Matt, sorry I did mean underrated! My bad.But I agree with you 100% that our pass rush was garbage last season. I do feel that the problem here was with our interior on the Dline and that was "fixed" with the drafting of Mccoy and Price. Adding Roy Miller to that mix of dt WILL make our pass rush much better and thus make our entire defence better. Do you agree?
I think it was greatly improved and I commend the selections. I also wrote very recently that I expect that Tampa's 3 DT rotation will soon be the envy of the league. Great start-but not enough for 2010. I like White as a pass rusher, but I still see DE as a huge need for next off season. The LBs are solid and there is hope in the secondary. The D will be better immediately. But don't expect massive improvements. Also, a ball control passing attack will help keep the D off the field. I like what TBay has done. Also a believer in Freeman.
Right now, Mark Anderson is listed as the Bears starter at DE opposite Peppers. Why? Since his breakout rookie year, he's had 5, 1, and 3.5 sacks in the three seasons since, plus he's a bit undersized. Is he really the best option they have?
It does have to be a worry and I didn't understand why they were so set on letting A Brown go. But, I smell a rotation there.
can the eagles win the nfc east
Can? Sure. I will pick the East as 1. Dallas 2. NYG 3. Philly 4. Washington though.
John Chick. Can this guy make an impact for the Colts?
I would be lying if I said I saw him play in the CFL. Sure seems like their type of upfield DE though. Real curious to watch him in the preseason. Very different game up there though. I was in charge of the CFL when I was with the Browns-SO wide open. As a DE, he doesn't have an NFL OT/TE combo block right on top of him with a big bruising RB running right at him over and over.
Cromartie will become obsessed with getting int's and start jumping routes just as he did after his 10 int season. Then, he'll get burned on the regular just like in SD. Dont forget he was playing opposite a very solid corner in Jammer
Jammer is very good. Underrated. Some of that will happen. No doubt. But-in NY-the Jets can have a safety consistently over Cromartie's side of the field...opposite Revis Island. So, in many cases, I bet Rex will want him to be aggressive and jump routes.
Matt, what do you think of the Dallas Cowboys shot at a sixth super bowl ring this year???
I like it a lot. NFC is very competitive, but as it stands today, I am probably picking a Cowboys/Ravens Super Bowl. Not feeling strong about my predictions though right now. Need to meditate on it a bit.
MW: If you had to pick today, who has the better NFL career, Bradford or Stafford?
Stafford, but that is a bit unfair, in that we haven't seen Bradford even throw one pass at the NFL level yet. I like Stafford's supporting cast MUCH better and trust the new Lions regime to continue to support him properly. Do I/you trust the Rams to do that? Hmmm. Plus, I really liked the toughness and willingness to stand in against the rush that Stafford showed last year. Oh by the way, he has a rocket launcher on his right arm.
Hi Matt, did you scout some of the players available in the supplemental draft ? Or do you consider this a worthless effort ?
Not worthless at all, but didn't have access to anything on these guys from this specific crop. Quite busy (even this time of year) with NFL responsibilities.
Matt.. Your thoughts on Jamal Charles..the man or platooning with Thomas Jones?
The Man. Heard it here first. Charles is the guy to get for your FF drafts. Monster season on the horizon. Jones will help spell him and keep him fresh. But he prob will pilfer some goal line TDs. I just see KC losing a lot and Charles tearing apart Ds with draw plays. Amongst other things. Big fan.
Matt. Sounds like (with the Eagles offensive chatter) that you expect Celek to be their check-down and maybe the #1 producer this year. Is this correct?
Not necessarily. I think Kolb trusts Celek quite a bit, but I see them really spreading it out. Slants. Quick hitting routes-not so much check-downs, but more three step game. I like Maclin in this regard a lot too. Surely they will throw bombs to D-Jax (& Maclin, who isn't exactly slow), but I just see the philosophy changing a bit. Could see Celek catching a ton of TDs this year though.
Any crystal ball insight into the Steelers O-line?
It is worrisome for sure. One more weak link. I know he wants a lot of money, but signing Flozell seems like the smart move here to me to play RT. Run behind him. I love Pouncey, but he can only play RG or OC and they are weak at both spots-and RT now.
Matt, I agree with you that the Nfc is very competitive but the Cowboys in the SB, PLEASE! When your star Qb is more interested in making the PGA rather than getting better at his possition; His team will NEVER make it to the sb! I sure Payton still studies hard to get better every off season. One team that I can see in the SB is the Packers. I don't think they get enough love. And Aaron Rogers is one of the best qb in this league and a true leader that will lead his teamto the SB!
I hear ya on GBay, but I see their pass D as a much bigger weakness than the Cowboy's QB position. Romo produces at a high level time and time again. I am a believer for sure. Can be my QB any time.
MW: Speaking of the Steelers, would you be shocked if they finished south of 8-8 this year? Btw I think your Ravens pick for AFC SB is spot on.
I would take the OVER if PGH's line was 8 wins. Just see 9-7 as more likely than 7-9 for them. I do worry about the OL a lot. The weapons are not quite as strong and obviously #7 is out 1/4 of the regular season. Leftwich might get killed behind that OL. Dude is a statue. But...I expect the special teams to be improved and I have said a few times, I think PGH will have the best D in the league in 2010. Can win a lot of 13-9 type of games-esp while Ben is out. Also, call me crazy or a homer or whatever, but I think Roethlisberger has a huge season. Puts the O on his back. The guy can really play.
Eli Manning started really strong last year..Plantar Facilitis did him and the team in..Big year for Eli?? In fantasy..rate him as almost elite QB?
I like Eli. I love his weapons-especially Nicks. But, in terms of FF, I think you need to realize that NYG's D was horrific last season. So, to keep up, they had to pass more than they really wanted to. Of course that helped Eli's numbers, but I think Coughlin wants more O balance...and I foresee the D being much improved. I would prob take about 8 or 9 QBs over Eli in FF.
(Trying again to submit) Matt, I'm baffled by the hype surrounding the Texans. They had a 9-7 record last year (solid but hardly spectacular), and were absolutely abysmal within the division (1-5). They're a ridiculous 1-16 all time against the division leading Colts! I'm glad the Texans have improved and are no longer a league laughingstick, but I just don't get the hype about them being playoff bound.
I am with you. Great observation. Of all the teams that are consistently being selected as playoff teams, I am the lowest on Houston. In what facet of their team are they better than a year ago? Not sold that Schaub really is a durable QB either.
Hi Matt, you think there would be an uproar if somehow the Cowboys got Home Field Advantage thru the playoffs then having to play the superbowl at home...that would be insane no?
Such is life. Certainly could happen. That division is no cake walk for home field! Nice stadium though!
Is to much to hope for that the FALCONS brain trust go out and get DE before the season? Can they really go into the seson with a slightly imprved defense? How much will new secondary coach Tim Lewis help? Do you know much about him? HUGE FAN!!!
Lewis has an excellent track record and he should help for sure. As will D Robinson! Robinson isn't superb, but clearly is an upgrade. And I see those young safeties taking a step forward. Weatherspoon is a very good coverage LB and the pass rush should be slightly improved. DE is still their #1 weakness, but Abraham (while declining) prob delivers more than last year. Bierrmann is better than many realize. But Jerry should come back to team with Babineaux as one of the best upfield pass rushing DT tandems in the league. Also, an improved (healthier) O will help the D a ton. ATL is really growing on me.
Hey Matt. I realize the loss of Nolan doesn't exactly help Denver's D, but overall do you think its improved? Wink did a great job helping the LB's transition to the 3-4 and they brought in the big 3 DL, all with tons of 3-4 experience, something their DL didnt have last year. Add in the 3rd best secondary stats wise last year and is this an improved D?
Love their secondary and the DL must be better. Have no idea what Williams has left at NT, but those type of guys seem to last forever. I like Bannan and now they have DL depth with last year's starters. I don't like the other ILB spot next to DJ though and really have my doubts if Ayers will step up. But-worst of all-I just see a lot of three and outs by Orton and company. That isn't good for your D!
What do u think will happen wit Brady's contract? Is there a chance, he could leave Foboro? Seems absurd
No. Of course not. No chance.
If you dont think you're a complete homer, you should find all the times you mention Pittsburgh, and see what percentage your comment was positive vs negative. Homer.
Do it for me. I bet I am harsher on the Steelers than you imagine...but never on the city. Picking Balt to go to the Super Bowl. Far more impartial than your short sightedness can see. But, you did what you wanted. You got on the chat. Got under my skin a little. Made yourself feel important. Your 3 seconds on stage are over now.
Matt.. Think Flacco and the Ravens open up the O & pass alot more with Boldin in the fold? Ray Rice ...top 4 FF player??
Yes on Rice. Not really with the Ravens' passing game. They still want to run. They still want to be a very physical football team. Remember, Boldin is also a heck of a blocking WR. His persona fits in with this squad very well. Flacco's responsibilities will increase-he's earned that. But they want to control the football and be the most physical team on the field. Which they can do well.
Who could the Eagles turn to if they choose to wash their hands of Mike Vick? I feel like they would prefer someone younger but are comfortable with Jeff Garcia
Garcia makes a ton of sense as a #2. Troy Smith does as well. I like Kafka a lot though. Not for today if Kolb were to go down, but I think his star starts to rise during this preseason.
Harsh response to a pretty harmless jab from jim, need a mydol?
Yeah, it was a little harsh. But we play for keeps here. "Play for Blood? Why that's just my game."
Hi Matt- Who do you like least from a fantasy perspective this yr.: M Turner or F Gore? Also, I think Anthony Dixon could really shine if he gets some work. Your thoughts?
Agree on Dixon and I prefer Gore to Turner. SO many more catches. Gore will prob miss a few games with a lower body injury of some sort-that is the norm. But his schedule is extremely favorable and he has more big play ability than Turner. Not a huge Turner fan here and very much believe in the Curse of 370.
M dubs random question in your Pitt recruiting days you ever come across Justin Kerpuekus played at Penn State and Pitt Central Catholic ? I know him well his roomate at Penn State and I played at Allentown Central Catholic in Pa.
Very nice. I know of him (of course), but actually my Father in Law knows him pretty well. F in Law doesn't know a thing about football, but hangs with Justin from time to time since he hung up the cleats. Very good guy by all accounts. Okay...well that might have been a little homerish thrown into the chat!
Matt, my man, with Mr. Richardson calling the personnel changes in Charlotte (pretty obvious going younger isn't coming from a coach on a pretty hot seat), does even a playoff spot guarantee Fox an extension?
That situation just seems so ripe for Cowher to take over next year almost no matter what. Almost seems too perfect. In a way, I don't understand that team. How are they building? Not real logical.
Kold an upgrade over McNabb? pass that good stuff your smoking
Maybe not immediately, but he fits what A Reid wants to do more on O than McNabb. Philly could not sustain O last year. McNabb isn't a quick decision maker or a precise thrower. Kolb looks to be-we don't know that for sure yet, but in terms of the three step game and pure West Coast principles I see Kolb as an upgrade.
Matty, How about the Steelers not resigning Lamar Woodley can they him just walk next year or will something get done?
He's not going anywhere. Mark that down. Been watching how this team does biz for way too long. He is the definition of their type of re-signing.
Ronnie stays healthy the Dolphins get to the playoffs. It's that simple.
Call me nuts, but I actually think Ricky is the better player right now. And-I think Miami will have the best OL in football next year. REAL excited about their O in general. Marshall is awesome. Henne will be an excellent QB. But...I don't like the D at all right now.
Who are your top 5 Fantasy TEs? And any chance we can convince you to play in our league this year?!
You will not convince me, but thanks for the interest. 1. Clark 2. Gates 3. Finley 4. Witten 5. Gonzo
MW: Conventional wisdom says the NFC West will be up to the arms of the QBs. I disagree. I see the NFC West becoming more of a rushing-centric division and the team that wins the battle in the trenches (O-Line/D-Line) and rushing efficiency wins the division. Thoughts?
I agree with you. I like SF in the West. But I like Smith MUCH more than Leinart. SF has built a physical nasty team in their Head Coach's persona. That D is vastly underrated and could be exceptional this year.
If i wasn't at work i would go back to all your comments! You're lucky I have some shame - and a computer that everyone can see. :)
Thanks for taking it easy on me. I have only been writing/chatting/broadcasting for ESPN for about five years now. You go through all my comments concerning the Steelers and let me know what you find. But-you will find most of my comments are positive. There is a reason for that. They are one of the elite organizations in this league. If I lived in Indy, it would be the same. If I lived in St. Louis, it would not be. 6 Trophies in this town Bro. Six. Two very recently. A "Bad" year for this team is 8-8. That isn't being a Homer. Those are facts. Now...back to the porch with the other puppies.
Matty, still the best chat in the nation and if you going to be a homer might as well be for the best franchise in the league. Go Steelers !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Stop over for an Iron after this chat, okay?
who starts the most games for Denver at QB?
Orton. McD has to start worrying about his job a little. If I am ownership, I am little shaky on him right now. He needs a few wins. But, in 2010, Tebow will get the most starts.
Carolina has the youngest team in the NFL, average age of 25. Beason, Williams, Stewart, Moore, Otah, Kalil, etc... They build through the draft, you obviously have no clue about that team. Stick to the AFC North
I love that nucleus. They very much build through the draft, but it almost seems like they went out of their way this off season to get worse. And Peter, the porch is calling you too. Watch your tone.
MW: How many antagonistic questions do you get on average a chat? We know you don't post them all:)
I post VERY few. MANY more during the season. But hey, I am in a mood. Music is blasting. Ready to drop the gloves with all comers today.
But on that note-with me acting all tough-I am going to duck out. My hour is up and I need to run. This was fun. You guys know where to find me though. Heading to Bristol tonight-will do the podcast from campus. Take care all.
