Chat with David Newton

David Newton
  (2:01 PM)

Welcome to Elmination Wednesday. For every fan whose question doesn't measure up you will be eliminated from the chat. Just kidding. So what's on your mind? Fire away.

Seth (Villiage of Watkons Glen)

In my opionion the scheldule should just make these changes. Give Montreal, Fontana's second date and swap the date with The Glen. Kansas will only get a second date, casino or not if Sprint wants it. And then give Atlanta's first date to Kentucky, only if they promote well, put more seats in, and make some upgrades, then make the off weekend between atlanta (now kentucky) and Bristol, after las Vegas. Vegas only gets season finale if they get second date. Hampshire sells out don't take a date away. And Atlanta with a holidy weekend and only one dare will sell out. Look at what happened when Darlington got one date on a holiday weekend, it sold out.

David Newton
  (2:03 PM)

Can't say I disagree with any of your suggestions. Would love to see Montreal on the schedule. Would also like to see a road course in the Chase. And I like the idea of ending the season in Vegas, having the banquet the next day and be done with it even though are some contractural things that might prevent that.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Will Elliott Sadler be back with RPM in 2011? If not who will drive the #19 Stanley Tools Ford in 2011?

David Newton
  (2:04 PM)

He says he hasn't been contacted and therefore believes he won't be back. Robbie Loomis says Sadler is one of several drivers he's interested in for the 19. The sad part here is the cars haven't been all that bad. They just need to get some drivers under contract.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Beside Racing do you follow other sports? if so What is your favorite Sports Team?

David Newton
  (2:05 PM)

Covered college football, baseball and basketball forever. Covered the NFL for 11 years. Have covered major golf tourneys such as the Masters and US Open, so yes I follow all other sports. I can't wait for the British Open to start. As for favorite teams, I grew up a Duke fan for college and Vikings fan in the NFL, but really have no favorites now. Best interest to be impartial.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Will it be Next Year or 2012 that Danica Patrick will race in the Daytona 500?

David Newton
  (2:06 PM)

Probably not until 2012 unless something drastic changes.

jesse (iowa)

any new news on 2011 scehdule. heard a couple rumurs in that new hampshire loses a race to kentucky and california of course loses one to kansas. and that bruton smith is pushing hard for a chase race at las vegas. any truth to any of these rumors.

David Newton
  (2:07 PM)

Actually, if Kentucky gets a date I bet it will come from Atlanta and the New Hampshire date would go to Vegas because Bruston wants to get Vegas in the Chase. Talked to Bruton yesterday and he was unusually mump on the situation.

Doug (Ohio)

Hey David, Do you think the races in the chase favor one driver over the other? Not racing a road course, Bristol and Daytona ect.

David Newton
  (2:08 PM)

It appears Jimmie Johnson has the Chase tracks down, but JJ is good almost anywhere, particularly since he has a road course win now. I don't know that you can JJ proof the Chase tracks anymore than you can Tiger proof a golf course.

Scott (South Boston, Va)

I've been a Wood Brothers fan since Dale Jarrett drove for them. I'm hearing they could run a full schedule next season. Is this true? Who would be driving? What has happened with Jon Wood? I really hate to see teams like the Woods and Petty faze out of Nascar. Both are original pioneers of the sport.

David Newton
  (2:09 PM)

When I originally talked to them they planned to run this particial schedule for a couple of years to get their feet back on the ground financially and then return to a full season. Here's a wild thought. Put Mark Martin in that car.

Darin (Pennsylvania)

When do we expect to hear who Harvick's sponsor will be for next year? What are your ears hearing on who it will be??

David Newton
  (2:09 PM)

Hearing Budweiser is close. Perhaps Indy. There usually are big announcements around that race.

Todd (Ga)

Do you think with Mark Martin's actions Sat. night that he is just frustrated and feeling like the red headed step child of at HMS?

David Newton
  (2:10 PM)

He's frustrated with performance for sure.

Scott (Baltimore)

Who doesn't love LOVE?

David Newton
  (2:10 PM)

Not sure about Tony Stewart. Just kidding.

Scott (Baltimore)

I know the 'politically correct' answer, but let's be honest here, as long as SHR gets engines from HMS, they'll never get 'equal' equipment in the chase. Agreed?

David Newton
  (2:11 PM)

Disagree. All the Hendrick engines are so close I don't think it really matters.

Ken (VA)

I'm heading to Bristol for the first time on August 21st, any place I definitly need to hit?

David Newton
  (2:13 PM)

If you like BBQ go to Ridgewood. Large portions and yummy. Getting hungry thinking of it. I usually stay in Johnson City and there are a few good places downtown. But most people go there to camp and enjoy the mountains around the track.

Ken (VA)

Predictions for Indy? Can Juan Pablo and Smoke make it back to their old Indy form?

David Newton
  (2:14 PM)

If I keep picking Jeff Gordon enough he's going to win.

Todd (Ga)

Do you think JR believes in Lance McGrew as a crew chief and vise versa do you think McGrew believes in JR as a driver?

David Newton
  (2:14 PM)

I really do, moreso on Junior in McGrew but I've seen nothing to make me think otherwise either way.

Tracy (CT)

There are talks of a chase elimination system. If this where in place what would stop say Sam Hornish (no one would know if he took out a car intentionaly since he always crashes) from taking out the 48 or 11 so the 2 could win the chase? Or what happens when a tire blows because Goodyear sends the wrong tires? Now that guy is out? Elimination chase is a bad idea!

David Newton
  (2:15 PM)

I agree, bad idea. Too gimmicky for me. It would create drama, but would it create the right champion? Read my column on ESPN.com if you want to know how I feel.

Tracy (CT)

Idea: if NASCAR is so into changing race tracks around.....take all the seats from say ATL (no one would miss it) and put the in Iowa! Now there is a track!

David Newton
  (2:16 PM)

I've heard it is a great track, and I like the name Newton, Iowa. Just don't see it in the cards.

Jake (Irving, TX)

Good story and nice touch Newt on including reader comments. Did France say why he wants to tweak the chase other than to create drama and a game 7 like, big bang finish?

David Newton
  (2:16 PM)

Thanks. Think he's getting pressure from outside.

RAY GORDON REID ( AIKEN SOUTH CAROLINA 29801)

QUESTION TO DAVID NEWTON AT 2.25 PM HI DAVID WHO WILL; BE IN NASCAR HALLOF FAME 2011

David Newton
  (2:17 PM)

I like David Pearson, Cale Yarborough, Dale Inman, Raymond Parks and Lee Petty. You?

Lawerence (Chicago)

Hi Newton, why is Sprint cup the only motorsports series with a playoff or chase? Does Nascar think this is the way to draw more motorsports fans into Sprint Cup?

David Newton
  (2:19 PM)

It was designed to create more drama and not have runaways for the championship in September with a driver who won only one race like Matt Kenseth in 2003. I think it has succeeded and still takes in consideration the whole body of work. What do you think?

jesse (iowa)

what track do you prefer. kansas or fontana. kentucky or new hampshire.

David Newton
  (2:19 PM)

Kansas and New Hampshire if I have to choose.

Lawerence (Chicago)

Since Sprint Cup is already a 99% drivers series and not really identified with manufacturers any longer how about including an equal number of manufacturers in the chase to prevent Hendrick or Roush domination?

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

Get where you're going but you can't eliminate somebody who is better than somebody else just because he is in a Hendrick or Roush car. And Roush btw isn't dominating anything these days.

Michael (Springfield, Illinois)

How many career wins / championships will Jeff Gordon have before he decides to retire? How many races will DuPont sponser next year?

David Newton
  (2:21 PM)

I'll go with 91 and five. As for DuPont, not sure, but less than ever.

TG (PA)

Dave, I read that you spent some time at Denny Hamlin's house and Junior's house. Sounds like fun. what did you do there?

David Newton
  (2:22 PM)

Wasn't at Denny's house. Just passed it on the lake. Did go to Junior's house for a story on iRacing that will run next week. Was a ton of fun.

Nick Rolando (Orlando)

David, typing this at work. Two questions, what do you make of Robbie Loomis' comments last weekend about RPM and what else do you mean when you say "lots of stuff going on" on your twitter page?

David Newton
  (2:24 PM)

As for Robbie, he really is working to keep things together at RPM and doesn't believe things are as bad as people think. As for "lots of stuff," there are a lot of moving pieces out there between sponsors and drivers.

PJ (Cary, NC)

Newton, Jeff Gordon leads the series in Top 5's and is third overall in laps led, but has zero wins. Recent contenders like Jimmie Johnson, Mark Martin and Carl Edwards all needed to win races in the final 10 races to compete. Can Gordon continue with this formula and have a shot at the Cup? Or will he need a bang out a few wins in the Chase to be considered a legitimate contender?

David Newton
  (2:25 PM)

History tells us he'll need to win a race or two, but consistency will keep him in contention.

TG (PA)

Did you see the Montoya, Jimmie and Junior's cars made into transformers for the new movie? Wonder how they would run on the race track.

David Newton
  (2:26 PM)

I did not. Guessing too much aero drag. Loved the first Transformers movie. Can't wait to see this one.

Caster and Camber (Bahama, NC)

Hows it going Mr. Newton? I really enjoyed your story today. Here is my two cents on this.... I understand what Nascar is trying to do with the Chase and these rules changes. They want the suspense and drama that a Super Bowl or Final Four Championship game has where it comes down to the last race. I think with all the variables in NASCAR the odds of it coming down to the last race is not favorable. You have mechanical failures, wrecks, or even some sort of personal reasons that could take a driver out on any race day. There is no way to predict these and therefore no way to come up with rules to adjust for these when/if they happen. I think that if NASCAR would realize this then they would have a better shot at getting this right. I am not oppose to change as long as the change doesn't ruin the sport for the long term just for some short term ratings. I personally think that the season champ needs to have a combination of the highest win total and best season average of finish with more weight on season average of finish then on wins. Thanks again

David Newton
  (2:26 PM)

All good points. Thanks for taking the time to share.

Ray (CT)

Elimination system: The 2 chase drivers with the lowest point totals are eliminated every 2 races. The points reset with 2 races left and 4 drivers battle it out.

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

Drivers for all practical purposes are eliminated if they have a bad start anyway, although JJ bounced back strong in 2006 after falling like 190 back. I don't like the reset. What if one of the drivers outside the reset winds up with more total points than the champion. Still too gimmicky for me.

Louis (FL)

It appears that Max Papis is now a start and park. Any chance he will get a better deal next year. Such a waste of talent.

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

He's a nice guy. Let's hope so.

Ryan (Ventura CA)

Hi David, Why the low Attendance on Sat? Place looked a 1/4 fullThanks

David Newton
  (2:29 PM)

Much more than a quarter full, but it was low. Attendance has been off at every track. Off in other sports as well. As Junior said, people are having a tough time in the economy spending money on races like they did in the past.

jesse (iowa)

is vegas gonna be a chase track

David Newton
  (2:29 PM)

Hearing it could be.

Rick (Philly)

David - Just rewatching the Chicago race and it was surprising how dominent the 48 car was until the spinout. Knaus said they brought a new package. Is there concern in the garage that they might have found something that will serve them well on the mile and one halfs during the chase?

David Newton
  (2:30 PM)

He wsa dominant. As I said on Twitter during the race, he'll have to pass out from lack of sleep because of the baby to lose this one. Don't think he passed out, but the spin did change his fate.

stevet (nc)

when dose the chase stop

David Newton
  (2:31 PM)

Don't hold your breath.

Cale (Boston)

At first I was like, "Uggghhh!" and then I was like, "Ohhhhh..." and then I was like, "Hmmmm..." and now I'm like, "Mehhhhh..." but I still could be like, "Aaaaaaye!!!" Thanks, Randy and co.

David Newton
  (2:31 PM)

I am like byeeeeeeee

jesse (iowa)

is there a done deal on whose gonna sponsaer kevin harvick in 2011.

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

I keep hearing Budweiser. Maybe be a partner as well.

Bob (Cali South)

What's RPM's status looking like next year? Whatever they do, they need to get Menard and Allmendinger signed on asap. Any chance we see some new blood in the form of a veteran (maybe Bobby Labonte)and a rookie (Aric Almirola?) rounding out the stable? That'd be a potent lineup with continuity, experience and potential.

David Newton
  (2:33 PM)

I hear if RPM can keep two cars Menard will stay. Robbie Loomis says Allmendinger talks going well, although hear Penske has a shot with Best Buy in a package deal. I like Almirola and Labonte. Would be good matches.

Michael (San Jose, CA)

Hey Mr. Newton, I'm in my 20's and of all my friends they can name 3 Nascar drivers, Kyle Busch and Dale jr from watching SC and Denny cause i guy works for FedEx. They don't know or care about Nascar history or roots. My question is why isn't Nascar doing something with the chase to bring in new, young fans?

David Newton
  (2:34 PM)

They are looking at that now, although if you are going to be a fan of the sport you really should look into its history.

Dee (Vegas)

So Sadler wants to leave RPM, or is at least exploring his options at this point. My question is, where would he go? I don't see any landing places in cup for the guy. Also, give Las Vegas a Saturday night race in the chase for the 2nd date and I'll be there!

David Newton
  (2:35 PM)

If Elliott wants to stay in Cup I can't see a better opportunity than RPM if they can find some common ground. Maybe Todd Parrott will turn that team around to where they want to stay partnered.

Frank (Kingston, P)

David - Any news on John Darby's replacement?

David Newton
  (2:36 PM)

None at all. They said they were taking their time and I guess they are.

Patrick (NH)

Are Kyle and Samantha the only Nascar people that will be attending the ESPN ESPY awards show tonight?

David Newton
  (2:37 PM)

Honestly, I haven't heard. Let me check with Andy Hall of ESPN. Will get back to you.

Dee (Vegas)

Did you see the pics of the 42, 48, and 88 in Transformers 3? Pretty cool to see that Nascar is going to be a part of the sequel. I'm thinking with all those weapons attached to their cars, Jr and Montoya would be a lot more threatening on track. We already know what the 48 can do. :-)

David Newton
  (2:37 PM)

I did not. Send a link to my twitter page DNewtonespn or email me. It's on the bottom of my column.

Frank (Kingston, Pa)

David - There is a saying that bad facts make for bad law. Is France reacting to needed changes or that JJ has won 30% of the chase races which most likely will never be duplicated?

David Newton
  (2:38 PM)

It's not all about JJ. It has more to do with drama for the final races.

Ken (NJ)

(Hypothetical) - All the drivers have to turn right for a whole season, would different drivers dominate the sport?

David Newton
  (2:39 PM)

Not hypothetical. Nice attempt at humor.

jesse (iowa)

go duke!!!! so your saying las vegas would get 2 races or its 1st would move to chase and something else will take the 3rd race of the year?

David Newton
  (2:40 PM)

Bruton wants Vegas to have a second race. My only problem is the races at Vegas aren't much more thrilling than California.

Jeremy (Port Angeles, WA)

What is your thought about Dallara being the chassis choice for the 2012 Izod Indycar Series?

David Newton
  (2:41 PM)

Watched the press conference. No major thoughts as for what it will mean to the sport. What do you think?

Rob F (Hoboken, NJ)

Hey Newt, was The Chase truly a reaction to MK's championship or were there are major factors in going with it? The old points system seemed fine and reflected the true champion of the season. In other sports the success of a team is based on a win/loss record considering they only compete one at a time, unlike NASCAR where 43 teams (arguably) compete. While The Chase does add (manufacture?) drama, I still prefer the non-Chase format.

David Newton
  (2:42 PM)

Not sure if MK's title was the catalyst, but it certainly made for a good scapegoat. I have a feeling with the new television contract being negotiated around that time that there was a call for something different.

Ken (VA)

Does Tony Stewart have anyone lined up to fill the gap for Old Spice at the end of the season?

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

They are talking to people. Heard Mobil One might be in the mix if what I'm hearing about Hendrick staying with Quaker State is true.

Dee (Vegas)

Sorry for all the questions today. Got lots on my mind. Is Rusty Wallace's remark how others feel about Kyle in the garage? What brought that on? If the media guys can't even stand Kyle's attitude, what's that say about him?

David Newton
  (2:44 PM)

I can't speak for Rusty. Everybody is entitled to their opinion and I'll leave it at that. My thoughts on Kyle are much different now than they were a year ago.

Jon (Indiana)

David any word yet of Penske #77 sponsor? Allgaier cup? 3 or 4 cars yet?

David Newton
  (2:45 PM)

First, hearing Sam Hornish Jr. will move to the 12 with Keselowski going to the 2 and Kurt Busch going to the 22. Hearing Penske has talked to drivers about a fourth car. Allgaier may be a year away, but Penske wants to keep him.

Andrew (Philly)

How has Ron Malec, Jimmie Johnson's car chief, not get a crew cheif job yet? He should become Kahne's crew cheif when they move Gustafson to Jr. and make Mcgrew an engineer.

David Newton
  (2:46 PM)

Gustafson I am told will be with Kahne, but Malec has been rumored for a crew chief job for several years now. Got to admire him for his loyalty. And maybe he doesn't want to be a crew chief.

Tina (Xenia, Ohio)

Why doesn't Nascar accept the fact that the new normal for Nascar is lower attendence and lower tv ratings just like Indy car?

David Newton
  (2:47 PM)

While there may be some truth in that you can't blame anybody for not settling.

Brad (South Dakota)

do you think budwiser is going to rcr next year and who would make a better spokesperson: harvick or bowyer

David Newton
  (2:48 PM)

I do, and I personally would rather see Bowyer with Budweiser. Seems to fit his image more than Hamburger Helper.

jesse (iowa)

have you ever been to iowa speedway?? if you have did you like it and what race did you see if any there

David Newton
  (2:48 PM)

I have not, but those I've talked to who have say it's a great track.

Tracy (CT)

Does Juan Pablo really think he his a rite to critisize Mark Martins driving? Juan is a human wrecking ball.

David Newton
  (2:49 PM)

NASCAR said "have at it boys," so he's having at it. Not sure anybody has the right to criticize but sure would be boring if they didn't.

Layne (Minnesota)

Alot of attention has been drawn to Iowa Speedway after the truck race...do you expect them to add seats and/or get a cup date in the next 5 years?

David Newton
  (2:49 PM)

They'd like that, but there simply isn't room on the schedule.

Jeff (Charleston SC)

What was your opinion on the race thsi weekend in Chicago? I thought it was one of the most boring races I have ever watched. I Love watching racing. Any cars or trucks but I cant watch race like that. Thoughts?

David Newton
  (2:50 PM)

The race itself was one of the most boring of the season, but the battle between Reutimann and Gordon was good and the emotion Reutimann showed may have been the best of the year. Can't have it all I guess.

Scott (Baltimore)

Let's try this again: Who doesn't love kittens, bunnies, and little baby seals? :-D

David Newton
  (2:50 PM)

Depends on how much they shed.

Janie (Ft. Myers)

Since Nascar always says they listen to the fans and give the fans what they want they how come Dale jr isn't running the #3 in Sprint cup and winning races?

David Newton
  (2:51 PM)

A, becuase he doesnt' want to. B, because he doesn't drive for RCR and they own the rights to the number and C, Dale Jr. doesn't want to be Dale Sr.

Scott (Baltimore)

Any word on the imminent sponsorship woes of SHR?

David Newton
  (2:51 PM)

Nothing more than they are talking to several sponsors, including Mobil One.

Eric (Ohio)

With all the talk of moving dates and martinsville not being mentioned for once, is it safe to say the 2 races there will be safe for a couple of more years? I go to both and love that place!

David Newton
  (2:52 PM)

I hope so. The series needs more short tracks.

Tim (AZ)

David, what do you make of Kenseth's quotes from last Friday's press conference? Whining, or fed up and being honest to a fault? It seems like he wants out.

David Newton
  (2:53 PM)

He just wants to turn things around and doesn't see progress. Nothing wrong with being honest is there?

Ken (VA)

What are some of the best songs about NASCAR?

David Newton
  (2:54 PM)

Brooks and Dunn on Dale Sr?

jesse (iowa)

when there saying an elimination type chase do mean a bracket type deal.

David Newton
  (2:54 PM)

Haven't heard of a bracket. Just eliminate and reset.

Chris (Crestview, FL)

The 24 and 48 debuted an all new chassis at Chicago and had new suspension stuff at Daytona. Why isn't the 5/88 shop getting access to the latest and greatest equipment? Given the fact that the 24/48 are firmly in the chase shouldn't the 5/88 be getting first dibs right now so they can make the chase this year too? Are all things truly equal at HMS?

David Newton
  (2:55 PM)

All four cars from what I know have the same access. Do you think Hendrick wouldn't do whatever he could to make Junior make the Chase. Maybe the 24 and 48 are experimenting to see if it works because they can afford it if things don't work out.

Billy Bad Butt (Chicago)

http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/attach/7/3/8/6/3/img5289t_1278787907.jpg

David Newton
  (2:56 PM)

Ask and you shall receive. Thanks.

ely (state college, pa)

when the new open wheel cars hit the track i think they should dump the irl name and use formula usa. sound like a plan? the irl brand name has zero equity in the eyes of long time open wheel fans.

David Newton
  (2:57 PM)

Don't think there will be a change but interesting thought.

Jolt (KC)

David, If Mobil 1 leaves Penske and Sam Hornish next season, what do you see happening to Sam and the 77 team? Sam Nation wants to know!!!

David Newton
  (2:57 PM)

Oh, Mobile One is gone. Can't have two oil companies and Shell Pennzoil takes precedence here.

Chris (Crestview, FL)

Has Mr H. truly kept his promise to give the 88 team all his resources? Junior has unloaded cars with broken parts on them right off the hauler on Fridays 3 times this year, is racing chassis that are over 10 races old, and the 24 and 48 always seem to be debuting new stuff from the R & D team. Or are you gonna tell me I am crazy?

David Newton
  (2:58 PM)

You're crazy. He's doing all he can. No offense I hope.

David (Toronto)

Like your Mark Martin to the Wood Brothers.

David Newton
  (2:59 PM)

Just came to me. Would love it. And Martin owns a Ford dealership so that would work.

Chris (Crestview, FL)

I think as long as Junior is bringing in tons of money for HMS, Mr H could care less how Junior runs...hes getting his millions anyway right David?

David Newton
  (2:59 PM)

Oh, he cares. He doesn't want to be the one who couldn't make Junior a winner. It's a challenge.

JOhn (CA)

David, will Jamie Mac be back in the 1 next year?

David Newton
  (3:00 PM)

He will, and Bass Pro Shops will be with him.

Ken (VA)

What inside sources do you have about the Tony Stewart information? What sites or blogs do you read? Any specific journalists you follow in the sport?

David Newton
  (3:01 PM)

I can't tell you the sources. You know better. I do follow a few other journalists, but would prefer to think if you have a need to know ESPN.com would be the place to go.

David Newton
  (3:02 PM)

That's all I have time for folks. Check out the column and I'll drop in there and chat some on the comment section. Or ask on Twitter at DNewtonespn. See you next week. Remember, ESPN takes over the series at Indy.
