Chat with Bruce Feldman

  (2:02 PM)

Thanks for dropping by. Just spent the week at the EA Sports Elite 11 QB down in OC and am heading out to the ACC meetings tomorrow. Excited the season's set to go.. Let's get to it.

Scott (Sioux Falls, SD)

How do you see Ryan Mallet's season going?

  (2:03 PM)

He's got a fantastic arm.. I think he's going to have a big year there.

Nick (MN)

Hey Bruce with some of the SEC schools under investigation, do you think this will effect to BCS standings at the end of the season?

  (2:06 PM)

Could be. It depends on if any players are actually sat down for the season and how long the investigations linger. If you take a Marvin Austin off the UNC defense, it would certainly impact the Tar Heels in a big way, and in the process probably helps LSU's chances of winning that opener, and if the Tigers can get some momentum going, who knows.. interesting chains of events in play.

Casey (Columbus,Oh)

I saw where Chris Spielman said that the players should be paid a stipend each year. But wouldnt this make the players greedy and how do you divide that money up? I dont think it would be fair for a starter at Alabama getting the same amount as a 3rd string guy from Eastern Michigan

  (2:08 PM)

I heard Chris say that on CF Live yesterday. It's a tricky issue in terms of which athletes get what. When I conducted the confidential players survey for ESPN Mag last offseason, a lot of players told me they thought players should get paid something, not a lot (which was nowhere near what a lot of people think they'd ask for) just enough to get by since they are not allowed to work.

Nathan (Kentucky)

Hey Bruce, how do you think Pitt will fare in the Big East this year? A shot at a BCS bowl?

  (2:09 PM)

Yes, good shot at winning the Big East. They have two great offensive players in Dion Lewis and Jonathan Baldwin. Curious if the D can be as fierce as it was last season.

Chris (Houston)

Who impressed you most at the Elite 11 camp?

  (2:10 PM)

Of the HS QBs, the guys who impressed me the most were Jeff Driskel and Adam Pittser.. Of the college QBs I'd say Andy Dalton and Kirk Cousins.

Ryan (Miami)

How does Jacory Harris look in terms of adding weight and getting bigger?

  (2:11 PM)

He has really filled out. He joked with me the other day that the last time he was at the Elite 11, a good wind could play him over. He's about 30 pounds bigger. It's really noticeable in his upper body. He's around 195 now.

Wes (Alabama)

You prefer the Saban stance on agents (responsibility falls on agent) or the Chizik/Dooley stance (responsibility falls on player)?

  (2:13 PM)

It's both.. I said this on Outside the Lines yesterday, there's enough blame to go around. The coaches go a lot to educate the players on the dangers, but the temptation is there. Players know the rules though. They think they'll get away with it.

Kyle (New Fairfield, Connecticut)

Hey Bruce, love the blogs and conversations. How do you see UCONN handling itself against Michigan in the re-opening of the Big House? With Randy Edsall never able to beat Rich Rodriguez before, do you see this as the year he notches a win?

  (2:14 PM)

Thanks Kyle. I don't. I think Michigan will get off to a fast start this season and have a surprisingly solid year.

JP (Michigan)

Bruce, Vegas has Michigan on a over/under 7 wins, do you see more or less than 7? (I see under is vegas's number)

  (2:15 PM)

I see the over.

Joey (Los Angeles)

Does Arizona have a shot at winning the Pac-10 and getting to the Rose Bowl? I think Nick Foles is one of the more underrated west coast signal callers.

  (2:15 PM)

He is very good indeed... Lots to replace on D though. I'd pick one of the Oregon schools to be the Pac-10 champion.

Nick (Atlanta)

Seriously? They get paid a college education with full room and board. That is worth a ton after college. They all get paid.

  (2:17 PM)

They do, but they don't exist as regular students. I can only speak on football, but it's almost a 365-day a year job. Their schedules are often radically different from normal students. Also, the schools do make a lot of money off them selling their jerseys and marketing their programs.

Bennett (San Francisco)

Best wide receiver in college football? Power rank these 5: A.J. Green, Julio Jones, Michael Floyd, Ronald Johnson, & Armon Binns

  (2:18 PM)

I'd start with Floyd and then Green. I'd also include a few other WRs in that top group (DeAndre Brown, Jon Baldwin, Jeff Fuller, Ryan Broyles).

Bradford (Boise, ID)

Hey Bruce, I saw the other day that you mentioned that Reggie should have to return his Heisman. Why is he getting so much flack? He took money/benefits (which is against the rules). Wouldnt it be a much worse "crime" to take PEDs or something that actually boosted his on-field performance? Thanks.

  (2:21 PM)

Check out my mailbag today. I addressed this right off the top. He was found guilty of big rule, and to me that trumps all.

Eli (Chase Bank)

Bruce, does Oregon win 10 games this year?

  (2:21 PM)

Yes, I think so. Lots of experience on both lines, and some really explosive RBs.

Trevor (Lakeland, FL)

How did Teddy Bridgewater look at the Elite 11 camp?? How would you stack him up next to Jacory Harris from the 08 Elite 11??

  (2:23 PM)

In a word I'd say effortless. Things just come easily for him. He bounces around and makes things happen. He did very well in a lot of the accuracy challenges. Physically he's bigger and more athletically than Jacory was back then. However I think Jacory had more polish. His QB coach back then Chris Perkins is really highly regarded down there and he gave Harris a lot of work in his drops, reads, etc.

Brian (Seattle)

How long do you think it'll take for Sark to get the UW turned around and back near the top of the Pac-10 every year?

  (2:24 PM)

Near the top? They might get close this year, and I suspect they'll take a step back in 2011 without Locker, but after that they should be strong. The lines were really down when he took over.

Ryan (Greensboro, NC)

Buy or Sell: Penn State?

  (2:25 PM)

This year.. new QB.. sell. I think they'll be pretty good, but not a top 15 team.

Travis C. (Lake Highlands)

Bruce, true or false, Baylor finally goes to a bowl game this year?

  (2:26 PM)

True. If Griffin stays health.

Mike (Virginia)

Thoughts on Dayne Crist

  (2:28 PM)

I'd want him as my starting QB or working in my company. Smart, affable guy. He seemed that way when I first spent some time with him three years ago and still that way now. I think he'll fit well in Kelly's offense. Players like him. The only thing he really is lacking is he hasn't played a lot yet. I think if you drew up what ND brass would want in their QB, he fits it to a T.

Jake (Honolulu, HI)

Dark Horse of the Pac-10?

  (2:29 PM)

I'll go Washington.

Eric (UT)

Do you think Bryce Brown fits into what Dooley is trying to establish or would Dooley just as soon see him leave and end it already?

  (2:29 PM)

He didn't participate in spring drills when everyone else did, let him move on.

Trevor (Lakeland, FL)

Hit me with the follow-up answer Bruce!!!!! Cmon sir...I believe in ya!!

  (2:30 PM)

Darryl (Oakland, CA)

Hmmm, Cal's O Line and D line are looking really good to start 2010. I've seen you mention you see them under .500 this year. Senior QB, good lines, good WR and TE, perhaps the best secondary in the Pac 10...What is your train of thought on the low preseason ranking?

  (2:33 PM)

Shaky QB in a league with a lot of good ones. Only two of their top seven tacklers back. I don't see the point about the secondary. When I mentioned them under .500 in a recent chat, it was in regards to a question about which did I see as more likely 10-2 or 5-7..I think they're around a .500 team. Cal's only one 10 games once in the last five years and the QB was a lot different then.

Jeffrey (Florida)

When you heard Chris Martin was leaving California was your first thought, he couldn't possibly be going to Florida too?

  (2:34 PM)

No, my actually first thought when I saw the headsup on my blackberry was "Man, how much more 'breaking news' are we going to hear this week?!?"

Trevor (Lakeland, FL)

This question has to make it follow-up question. After seeing Teddy Bridgewater at the Elite 11 camp, do you see him fitting into Miami's pro-style offense? Or is he better suited for a spread attack?

  (2:35 PM)

Right now, my hunch is spread, but he's got the confidence to feel like he can be great in any scheme and he has time to polish up his footwork.

Matt (Philadelphia)

Could you elaborate on your tweet about Jerrell Powe? I know he had a major struggle becoming eligible, but that's great he has persevered and has made it this far.

  (2:38 PM)

Jerrell is one of the engaging personalities I've ever met. I spent a lot of time around him for Meat Market. He was not a great student growing up (as most people know), but he was categorized in a really negative light in a lot of places. People made a lot of jokes at his expense. Thing is, if you speak to him, you'll be impressed. He's funny. He's sharp. He is a guy who is really hard not to like. I'm glad that he's healthy and down to 316 pounds.

Mike (LA)

Thought on Cody Kessler?

  (2:40 PM)

He's built kinda like a linebacker. He moves really well. He doesn't necessarily look like the kind of QB Kiffin would target because he's not 6-4 (more like 6-1), but if you observe his personality, you get it. I know Kiffin really wants to see a certain persona from his QBs and Kessler has that confidence and a bit of aura to him.

Matt (Huntsville, AL)

What do you see Auburn being able to do this year?

  (2:41 PM)

Pretty good, but I think they still might be 4th in the SEC West.. I'm a little higher on LSU than some folks I guess.

Mike (Syracuse, NY)

What are Christian Ponder's chances at the Heisman? He could putup big numbers in FSU's offense

  (2:42 PM)

Decent. He probably needs to beat two of the three to do it through (OU, Miami, UF) and two of those are on the road.

Seth (Birmingham, AL)

How many wins for Mississippi State?

  (2:43 PM)

Wouldn't shock me if they opened 1-3. And at Houston and at UF back to back aren't easy either. I'll say 6.

Rett (Oregon)

Who is gonna win the VT/Boise State game? and why?

  (2:44 PM)

I'll go with VT. It's basically a road game for Boise and Tech has a great running game.

Trevor (Lakeland, FL)

Is UF's young defense going to cost them the SEC East title...or will the stockpiled talent be able to overcome the inexperience?

  (2:45 PM)

No, I'm going with UF in the SEC East.

Les Miles (Baton Rouge)

Tell me you're not one of the media guys buying into Arkansas and Auburn, are you? Why is it presumed that my staff can't make improvements to our dismal offense, but Arkansas and Auburn will have markedly better defenses this year?

  (2:45 PM)

I just told you that a few questions ago.

Nathan (Missouri)

Do you see Blaine Gabbert being a big time QB? I know he was young last year, but there were times he just didn't make very good decisions. I noticed some games there were 5 or 6 times where he rolled out and got sacked when he should have thrown the ball away.

  (2:46 PM)

I do. Physically he is impressive. He'll get a lot better now that he has a year under his belt.

Les Miles (Baton Rouge)

Sorry, I have time management issues.

Hector (Aurora, IL)

With ND and Miami renewing their rivalry, what can a game like that do to benefit the recruiting for both teams but mainly what can it do for ND's recruiting

  (2:47 PM)

I'm not sure it makes much difference for either teams recruiting. ND already recruits in florida. Some series benefit in that way. I don't think this one really matters like that.

John (San Antonio, TX)

Thoughts on Jerrod Johnson. Where do the Aggies finish this year?

  (2:49 PM)

If he can become more consistent, he'll get some Heisman talk. He has GREAT skill talent around him. Not sure people realize just how good Christine Michael and Jeff Fuller really are. Taneyhill's good too. I expect the D to improve quite a bit with Tim DeRuyter coming over from AFA. He did wonders over there. Nine wins maybe?

Jim (Trumbull, CT)

hey Bruce,Tell me how the DAWGS will be this year. Will Murray be the answer? Will they beat Florida?

  (2:51 PM)

I think the key is as much what happens with their D. A new system yet for as shaky as their D was last year, they lost four very good players in the middle of the D. I expect them to be around 8-4.

Jeff (Memphis, TN)

Thoughts on Michigan's upcoming season and the future, will Rodriguez be there much longer?

  (2:52 PM)

I think this is the year Rodriguez turns the corner there and they win at least eight. They have a lot of speed in key places and guys have a better sense of the system.

Jake (Lindon, Utah)

Will Utah State go to a bowl game this year without Turbin or Morrison?

  (2:53 PM)

I dont see it happening. I will say this: they were a lot more competive than I thought they'd be last season. Quietly I think Gary Andersen had a decent first year there.

Charlie (New Yawk)

With Frankie Hammond as the 28th arrest under Urban Myer why hasn't the press focused more on this?

  (2:55 PM)

I feel like the press has focused on the issues there quite a bit. The fact that most college football fans actually know that Meyer's program's had at least 28 or 29 known arrested players is an example of that.

Dev Joshi (Fort Wayne Indiana)

What about Stanzi?? He knows how to win. There may never be a quarterback as resilient as him in the fourth quarter? What do you see he do this year?

  (2:57 PM)

He is a winner. That quality tends to get overlooked but it's a great trait in a QB and a leader. Still, he really does need to cut down on the mistakes.. Having almost a 1-1 TD-INT mark is an issue.

Nick (Florida)

Please take this question. Re: the Maurkice Pouncy investigation. If he is cleared of wrongdoing, wasn't this a great move for Florida? The strategy = investigate your own before the NCAA can. It keeps the NCAAs eyes off you because it shows you are being proactive. Any thoughts?

  (2:58 PM)

I might be misreading your question, but that's how it's supposed to work.

ATrain (Ft.Lauderdale, Florida)

If Miami makes it pass there tough stretch of games early in the season, do u think they a have shot at the MNC?

  (3:01 PM)

Miami just needs to have a bunch of "one-game seasons".. the Canes can't worry about FSU or Va Tech. Jacory Harris told me Wednesday that the season starts with FAMU. That's all they should focus on. (Ohio State is of course next) but the key is keeping focused not for them getting caught up.

bill (orlando)

i disagree on your florida arrest comment, just cuz one guy sends in a question doesn't mean everyone knows something... i didn't know it, so therefor no one else knows it, makes just as much sense...

  (3:02 PM)

Hmmm. Agree to disagree on that one. I'm going by the amount of email I get that references it. The number comes up a lot.

Mike (Dallas)

more overrated.... Texas A&M defense or the Jonas Brothers.

  (3:02 PM)

Jonas Brothers.

Zach (Lincoln, NE)

Is Bo correct and the defense will be better for Nebraska this year even after losing Suh and 3 other starters?

  (3:03 PM)

We'll see. Bo would be more qualified to speak on the subject better than anyone. He sees them.

Ry (South GA)

KAEPERNICK is the best quarterback of all time.

  (3:04 PM)

No, but he is really good and really fun to watch. And it's amazing that he got so overlooked in recruiting given how athletic he is and his frame.

Carter (Bethesda, MD)

Defending national champions, playing 6 SEC teams coming off of a bye, no way Bama can repeat as SEC champions, right?

  (3:05 PM)

It's possible, but it's tough enough to repeat without that factor.

Chris (Palm Beach, FL)

FSU defense 2010......closer to the top 50 than top 100?

  (3:05 PM)

Frankly, I'd hope so given the kind of talent they now have there.

Andrew (South Bend)

Let's get this season started already! Any idea when teams start their training camps?

  (3:06 PM)

Right.. around Aug. 5 for many teams.

Mike T (Cary, NC)

Is Tennessee really the 5th best in the east?

  (3:07 PM)

Somewhere between 4-5 given the experience on the O line and all of the turnover in the past 20 months.

Mike T (Cary, NC)

Overated or on the verge: Butch Davis and UNC

  (3:08 PM)

Check back in late September. He deserves a lot of credit for recruiting as well as he did to rebuild Miami in the mid/late '90s. He hit on an insanely high % of recruits.

Jake (Syracuse)

Bruce, 6 wins for Syracuse this yr?

  (3:09 PM)

I think they can start out 3-1, but then struggle and go 5-7. Doug Marrone was a good choice. He needs a lot more time.

Sammy (Ft Worth)

Do you see any upsets the first weekend as you peer into your crystal ball?

  (3:10 PM)

I'll get back to you on that in a few weeks.

Ben (Atlanta)

Why is it that the defending ACC Champions aren't getting much press? When will people learn not to doubt Paul Johnson?

  (3:11 PM)

It'll take G-Tech winning the ACC this year for there to be more buy-in.

  (3:11 PM)

Three more questions..

Trevor (Lakeland, FL)

Ohio State vs Miami...if you had to bet your house on one??

  (3:13 PM)

I wouldn't bet the house on anything.

Jake (Lindon, Utah)

Have you played NCAA 11? If so, who's your team on the game?

  (3:15 PM)

Just got it. The game is awesome. Haven't settled on who I go with regularly. I am intrigued by WVU just because you have the option of Noel Devine, which is always spectacular.

Sam C. (Tennessee)

How long will it take Dooley to get the Vols back up top of the SEC?

  (3:16 PM)

A long time if ever. There's a lot of big dogs in that yard.

max (michigan)

Is this the year Boise State can go to the big one?

  (3:17 PM)

Maybe, but even if they beat VT and Oregon State, they're still going to need A LOT of help. And for VT to go on and have a good season.

DT (College Football Hall of Justice)

By the way Bruce with the steps that USC has taken with Reggie now , I am cool with the NCAA lightening up on those sanctions, I think Pat Hayden was an awesome hire and I am a Sooner fan. I just think that this all needed to be done for the sport itself. Your thoughts ?

  (3:19 PM)

I think moving Mike Garrett out, bringing in Haden and making the statements the school made were all great moves. I'm skeptical if the NCAA will buy that that was enough to lighten up on the sanctions though. Very few schools win an appeal process, but it certainly didn't hurt USC's chances.

  (3:20 PM)

Thanks for all of the questions. If I didn't get to yours, send it to me via Twitter at BFeldmanESPN.
