Chat with David Newton

David Newton
  (1:59 PM)

Welcome from the Chamber room at the Westin in downtown Indy. In the middle of an ESPN.com summit meeting so gladly willing to spend an hour of that chatting with you. Just kidding. Interesting talk in here, but you guys are why we're here so fire away. And let me know what you thought of the iRacing story on Dale Jr that is on the site now. Fun time.

Rocky (Texas)

Do you think Nascar will continue the "have at it boys" approach even after Carl Edwards fianally kills another driver (or several) or even possibly some fans ?

David Newton
  (2:01 PM)

I do. I just think they need to know there is a line that can't be crossed. But you still can have at it. If Edwards hadn't blatantly admitted to wrecking BK he may not be under the scrutiny he is.

Ken (VA)

What are your feelings on parents getting involved with their children on the race track? Personally, I'm annoyed with Brad and Joey's dad making comments for them. You don't see Carl or Harvick's dad making ESPN appearences.

David Newton
  (2:02 PM)

I'm wondering if ESPN shouldn't capitalize and sponsor a match race among angry dads. As far as them getting involved it happens in Little League ... NASCAR was born around families and racing, so to tell them to stay out of the way might be too much. But at the top levels they do need to settle down a bit, although I have to admit it's good copy.

Ken (VA)

Who do you like out of Paul Menard, Sam Hornish Jr or AJ Allmendinger at the Brickyard this weekend?

David Newton
  (2:03 PM)

I don't like any of them, but if I had to pick one I'd go with AJ.

Ken (VA)

Do you think that an "old" (or wise) Mark Martin would be a good fit for a young team like Red Bull Racing?

David Newton
  (2:03 PM)

Not really, but he would offer that organization some stability and a solid racer. I just don't see it happening.

Ken (VA)

What do you think is worse - Carl losing nationwide points or having to sit out an entire race?

David Newton
  (2:04 PM)

I think suspension is too much. I'd go with losing points.

Ken (NJ)

What lowest seeded driver outside the top 12, do you think hast the best chance of still making the Chase?

David Newton
  (2:04 PM)

Dale Jr. and Mark Martin at 13 and 14.

Nicholas Rolando (Orlando)

David, any updates with regards to the rumors about sponsor/driver movement for next year that you talked about last week?

David Newton
  (2:05 PM)

Nothing except told Hendrick re-signed with Quaker State so Mobil 1 is out.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Which NASCAR race do you look forward to see or be at each year?

David Newton
  (2:05 PM)

Love Darlington, because I love the history of the place and I'm a bit biased being from there. The Bristol night race and Richmond also are cool.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

When Jacques Villenueve qualifies for the Brickyard 400, How many drivers will that make that raced in both the Indianapolis 500 & the Brickyard 400?

David Newton
  (2:06 PM)

Too many to count right off the bat.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who do you think will win the Kroger 200 at ORP & the Brickyard 400 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway?

David Newton
  (2:07 PM)

Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson. I know, boring picks. Maybe I should go with Brad K and Carl Edwards.

carl raleigh nc [via mobile]

what car will bobby labonte be in on sunday will it be the 09 or another car

David Newton
  (2:07 PM)

09.

Patrick O'Shea (Lyndon, KY)

Okay how can Carl say that wrecking Brad on the front stretch was the same as when Brad got into him in the corner? The 60 had a chance to bump and run him in 3 and 4 but decided to destroy his car and many others who don't have the Roush budget. They should park Carla for at least a race.

David Newton
  (2:08 PM)

Many feel the same way you do. Can't say I disagree, although I'm not for parking him.

jesse (iowa)

when will nascar get it together and penalize carl edwards. this is unacceptaple. if they dont do somthingg about this hes gonna KILL THE KID. if they dont give edwards a massive penalty its all about who you are and not what you did. THATS WRONG. what kind of penalty do think he deserves? i think 3-5 race suspention. he knows better than that.thats a little more than boys have it. so dont even give me that. NASCAR IS NOT GONNA BE HAPP UNTIL SOMEBODY GETS KILLED OUT THERE.

David Newton
  (2:08 PM)

They are looking into that as we speak. I expect you'll hear an answer before the day's out. Many inside the governing body feel something needs to be done.

jesse (iowa)

RUBBINS RACING. WRECKKINS NOT. RITE?

David Newton
  (2:09 PM)

Correct.

Frank (Maryland)

NASCAR can't say "have at it boys" and then punish the drivers for doing so. What's the right answer?

David Newton
  (2:10 PM)

Have at it but don't intentionally wreck somebody and then brag about it. There is no easy answer. But there needs to be a line in the sand.

Jim (WV)

For some reason I can't stand Brad K. How do the other drivers feel about him?

David Newton
  (2:10 PM)

It's mixed. But give Brad K a chance. He's really a nice kid who gets it.

kevin (wilmington)

Is all the backlash to the Chase due to the fact that JJ has won the last 4?

David Newton
  (2:11 PM)

Some of it is. Most is because there really hasn't been any drama in the final race. Not sure that is needed. What do you think?

Max (ocala, fl)

does JR score a top 10 this weekend? a year ago he was running well up there until he had engine troubles.

David Newton
  (2:12 PM)

It'll be close. Somewhere in the top 15 for sure.

Shawn (Gastonia, NC)

Your simulator experience was an interesting read today. It doesn't surprise me that the drivers are turning to simulators with the testing rules. That doesn't put the cougar in the passenger seat, however, and it doesn't slam you back in the seat on high banks. It is very easy to hit the corners at 200 MPH when you have no fear of damaging a million dollar car.

David Newton
  (2:12 PM)

So you're saying I was bold to go for 200 because I knew I wasn't going to die?

Tracy (CT)

So we have hear Harvicks and Jeff Gordons thoughts on Sat night. Any other drivers weighed in?

David Newton
  (2:13 PM)

Denny Hamlin whose ware with BK started the BK is too aggressive move last year said Edwards' move was "dirty, just dirty," and he was surprised NASCAR didn't take the win away.

SCott (Baltimore)

Honestly, I normally don't like Carl Edwards, and I still don't, but you have to give him credit for not taking any $%&T from BK....speaking of which, when will he learn you can't run through people all the time.

David Newton
  (2:14 PM)

First you give him credit, then you ask when will he learn. Kind of confused here, but I suspect if NASCAR puts the hammer down today he'll learn fast.

Dale_Jr_Is_Crap (New Jersey)

Hey David - Can you please use some of your pull to get everyone to stop using the phrase "Have at it, boys"? The media keeps shoving this phrase down our throats. Kinda like last year's double file restarts "Shoot-out style" phrase was intensely annoying after the first 1000 times hearing it.

David Newton
  (2:15 PM)

OK, but what would you like us to say? I am open. What about "Go Get 'em Girls?" Or "Wreak Havoc Guys?"

Caster and Camber (Bahama, NC)

Hey Mr. Newton, wanted to et you know that when you click to watch the video of you and Jr on iracing it goes to the video clip of Jr's Make a wish. Maybe you could make a call to get this fixed?

David Newton
  (2:15 PM)

Will do. So if I'm off here for a second that's what I'm doing.

David Newton
  (2:16 PM)

OK, I've requested that fixed.

Todd (Ga)

How is Dale Jr's new house compared to the old one?

David Newton
  (2:17 PM)

Pretty sweet. But it's a haul from the city.

Mike [via mobile]

Mr. Newton, do you ever miss covering the NFL?

David Newton
  (2:18 PM)

Yeah, have to admit I really enjoyed that. Schedule isn't so harsh and I love football.

Joe (Miami)

Do you know if NASCAR is gonna punish CE in any way? I have sold given away all my 99 gear so I can start shopping at the Home Depot.

David Newton
  (2:18 PM)

They are still meeting on it, but my guess is something will be done.

Steve (Chicago)

I was a Carl Edwards fan, now I am not for obvious reasons. Who else in the garage drives with his enthusiasm without the drama?

David Newton
  (2:19 PM)

Enthusiasm without drama is tough. Most guys who are aggressive and exciting to watch usually have drama in the rearview mirror.

Tracy (CT)

I see Kyle will be running the pink baby animals car in the NW race at Richmond. (I'm going to die of laughter every lap that thing makes) Is there any chance we will see the love car too??

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

Isn't the love car the same thing? I like Pink as you may have noticed on NASCARNow on Monday. Wearing a pink shirt today by the way. Not really a fan of it on the car.

John (Bristol, TN)

Which crew chief if any in the garage would be the best fit for JR? Please don't say Pops give someone else.

David Newton
  (2:21 PM)

I really don't have a problem with Lance McGrew. Funny how the crew chief always is the blame for Junior's woes.

dz (phx, az)

so did you get iRacing installed at home after your visit with jr?

David Newton
  (2:21 PM)

I don't have a PC at home, just my laptop, but I do have the codes to play and as soon as I get a machine at home I plan to. Really fun and Junior was a great teacher as well as a great sport.

Ryan (Ventura CA)

I think Carl on Saturday night should have said " I didn't mean to wreck him, I was just trying to rattle his cage" That would have been classic. What do you think?

David Newton
  (2:22 PM)

Sure your last name isn't Earnhardt?

Chris (Watkins Glen)

Is Villenueve start and park? Call me crazy, but Edwards should be put on probation for the rest of the year, and parked for this week's nationwide series race. Maybe I just want Darnell to get another shot with RoUsh. Also want to send props to Dave Burns, who did a pretty good job at lap by lap Saturday night.

David Newton
  (2:23 PM)

Don't think Villenueve is a start and park. As for Edwards, probation for the year sounds reasonable. Think points would be reasonable as well.

RAY GORDON REID ( SOUTH BEND INDIANA 46617)

QUESTION TO DAVID NEWTON AT 2.25 PM HOWDY DAVID WHO DO YOU HAVE FOR BRICK YARD SUNDAY

David Newton
  (2:23 PM)

Jimmie Johnson again...

Kevin (Cleveland)

Hi Newt, great story about Jr. and Jeffrey Buzzell, thanks for sharing. These kind of stories really show what a lot of the guys are all about and just how much they give back to others. My guess is that had you not covered the story most would have never known about it and that would have been just fine with Jr.

David Newton
  (2:25 PM)

Thanks. You're right, lots of untold hero stories out there.

David Newton
  (2:26 PM)

To the person who mentioned the bit-ly wasn't right on the Dale Jr. iRacing story, try this one. http://es.pn/dsdY1c

lenny (allentown,pa)

if you had your say..the old points rule or the chase system..under the old rules Gordon would be going for tirle number 7..he had over a 300 point lead a couple years ago and woulda won the year Kurt Busch won.

David Newton
  (2:27 PM)

I am mixed on that. I like the Chase and the drama it creates around the 26-race cutoff. I also appreciate the history of the sport and liked when it was all about each race, not about the Championship. Would love to hear more from you guys.

kevin (new jersey)

since im a ricky rudd fan im using the ricky rudd scale. he had a win taken away from at sears point when he spun davey allison in turn 11 coming to the white flag, carl spun brad on the straightaway on purpose and kept the win now thats not fair.

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

I didn't say it was fair, just saying NASCAR is very reluctant to take wins away. Where would you place Edwards if you did that?

Daniel (Phoenix)

How well is Carl liked in the garage. I tend to think with the responses that have come out lately against him it might not be the Penske guys that give him the payback. Also isn't Jr. very protective of Brad and do you see him interjecting himself in this "isue"

David Newton
  (2:30 PM)

Again, what the garage thinks of Carl is mixed. Ask Harvick and you'll get one answer. Ask somebody else and you'll get another. If Junior is asked about Brad he may chime in, but he won't jump into the fray like Harvick did.

steve (new jersey)

do you think people are going over the top saying carl is gonna kill someone. i mean brads hit was nothing compared to sam hornishs ride at the glen and no one talked about him getting killed

David Newton
  (2:30 PM)

Kill might be a bit strong, but the two wrecks Carl has caused with BK have been scary, not only for other competitors but fans.

Drew (Philadelphia )

If Jr makes another crew chief change, is it Pops Eury or nothing for him, because I think if you made Ron Malec crew chief and lance mcgrew team engineer you would see a lot of improvement in the performence of that team.

David Newton
  (2:31 PM)

Honestly guys, I don't see the need for a change.

Den (NJ )

What are the chances of EGR pulling off the victory with the at the Brickyard on Sun? Personally I think that if the 42 is not in victory lane on Sunday it will be a dissapointment. They are clearly out of the chase and winning the Brickyard would be great and give Ganassi the Trifecta.

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

Montoya would have won that race last year were it not for the speeding penalty. He's been fast all year and loves Indy. See no reason he won't be up front in this one.

Laurie (Sunrise, FL)

Hi Mr Newton, Do you think it is inappropriate for Harvick to threaten Carl Edwards with bodily harm and violence like he did in his comments about the Carl-Kewesloki matter?

David Newton
  (2:33 PM)

Isn't that what the the fans want to hear? Makes good copy for me.

kevin (new jersey)

do you think the have at it boys is getting used to much for what is going on. i think if nascar had not of said that nothing would be different with the racing and the passion, i think the media makes it sound like the drivers would not show there emotions if nascar hadnt of let them loose

David Newton
  (2:33 PM)

If you look at what was happening before they said have at it drivers were more cautious about showing their personality. As for the phrase, it is what it is.

Dustin (Jacksonville)

Will there be any sponsorship news for next year announced this weekend? Any Kasey Kahne news?

David Newton
  (2:34 PM)

Haven't heard of anything other than Reutimann becoming official. Hearing Kahne may be a month away.

Kevin (Boston)

I thought that BK handled the bump and run perfectly...got under him and moved him a bit, no one wrecked. Carl has the opportunity to do the same and punts him, why? Is it really an anger issue or is BK developing more skill than Carl?

David Newton
  (2:35 PM)

Takes more talent to make a bump 'n run pass than wrecking somebody don't you think?

Holly (St. Louis)

I read the article and watched the interview about Dale Jr doing his 200 Make a Wish for a child. Great story and good job by espn.

David Newton
  (2:36 PM)

Thanks. We try.

Russ (Logan, UT)

Hey David, is the only reason Harvick is running his mouth about the the Carl vs. Brad battle because Carl said that he has zero respect for Harvick as a person and a driver?

David Newton
  (2:37 PM)

That I am guessing plays a large part in it. They really don't like each other.

kevin (new jersey)

went to the hall of fame last week dave and it was fantastic except there was no ricky rudd stuff......what a shame, anyway i highly recommend everyone to go and the iracing simulator is fun i had the fourth fastest time of the day which was equivalent to kevin conways practice speed

David Newton
  (2:38 PM)

Good for you on iRacing. Not sure what it says about Kevin Conway. Hall if spectacular, and I'm not sure why there would be any Ricky stuff in there.

Phillip (Simpsonville, SC)

So, have you ordered a new computer, wheel capable of running iRacing yet?

David Newton
  (2:38 PM)

Not yet. Taking donations.

Billy (London)

Now we know why Joey is scared to fight back....He is a Huge Billy Joel fan.

David Newton
  (2:39 PM)

I wouldn't say Joey is scared to fight back. Looked pretty feisty going after Harvick.

kevin (new jersey)

if reed sorenson spun out brad k like carl did do you think nascar would take away the win from him

David Newton
  (2:39 PM)

Nope. Don't think the who is a factor here.

Ed (Fort Worth)

Newt, do you think Ganassi has good odds of landing the trifecta this weekend? Montoya gets around Indy very well and Jamie Mac seems to drive better at the high profile races.

David Newton
  (2:40 PM)

I do. Talked about that early. Check it out.

Dane (Freehold, NJ)

You're an owner and have to start a team today with 1 truck series only driver, 1 nationwide only, 1 chaser and 1 non-chaser - who would you pick?

David Newton
  (2:41 PM)

Truck Almirola, Nationwide Algaier, Cup Kyle Busch in the Chase, outside Dale Jr. for the money he'd bring in, Joey Logano because I think he'll be a factor for a long time.

Eric (Greencastle, IN)

What is wrong with Ryan Newman's team this year?

David Newton
  (2:41 PM)

Nothing major. Both of the Stewart-Haas cars have been so-so much of the year.

Adam (Burlingame, CA)

Aren't Gordon and Harvick a bit hypocritical to critize Carl for doing exactly what they have done to JP, Treux and Denny this year?

David Newton
  (2:42 PM)

The difference is how blatant this was and where it was on the track. You just don't wreck somebody like that on the straightaway.

Martin (Montréal )

David, what did you expect from JV this weekend ?

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

Not a lot. Not a great car and he's not used to driving them after being away for a while. Glad to see him back, though.

Ed (Fort Worth)

My bigger concern with Carl is his attitude after the race. Yeah, you're supposed to go out there and win the race, but you shouldn't wreck half the field doing it. He really came off as out of touch after those comments to me, your thoughts?

David Newton
  (2:44 PM)

That, in my mind, has him in as much trouble as what he did. Hard to ignore how blatant it was from his words.

Michele (New Jersey)

I just read your Iracing piece with Jr. Cool article, I could use one of those setups at work!!! I would be cussin up a storm too! Have fun at Indy

David Newton
  (2:44 PM)

It does bring out the foul mouth in you.

Lois (Bridgeton, MO)

Since Brad obviously didn't learn his lesson back at Atlanta doesn't Nascar need to step in and park Brad for 2-3 races until he learns to respect the veterans on the track?

David Newton
  (2:44 PM)

Not sure parking is right, but they need more than a slap on the wrist.

kevin (new jersey)

someone on the epsn nascar now roundtable on monday said that carl will have a lot of enemies because of all the torn up cars, this person that dont be surpirsed if someone from gibbs or dale jr or someone from roush paybacks carl, now first off i dont think that will happen, and second, why would someone from roush payback there own teammate? i think espn should stick with who they got and dont bring those two back

David Newton
  (2:45 PM)

Think you are referring to comments by Bob Pockrass, and I agree with him that someone from another team might make life uncomfortable for Carl because they were innocent bystanders in that mess.

Tracy (CT)

Were you as amazed as I was that Brads "enemy" Denny Hamlin took Brads side?

David Newton
  (2:46 PM)

Was a bit surprised, but Denny is a pretty savvy guy and knows right from wrong.

TG (PA)

Dave, enjoyed your article about iRacing with Junior. But I don't like the comments people make about it who don't seem to have any interest in Nascar. I guess they think its cool "in their own minds" like Brad said about Carl.

David Newton
  (2:47 PM)

Thanks. Haven't seen the comments you are referring but appreciate the input.

kevin (new jersey)

so brad k did a good bump and run on carl, but if he spun carl out would people still be saying he did a good bump and run, personally i think it was a bad bump and run because carl gave him so much room on the bottom

David Newton
  (2:48 PM)

If he'd spun Carl out then yes you would be hearing people scream about the move. I looked at it repeatedly and thought it was a good move.

Mr. Kesolowski (Pit Road)

Is there crying in Nascar?

David Newton
  (2:48 PM)

I'm crying now.

Emily (NJ)

David, I am sick and tired of people whining that Carl "is going to kill someone". Racing is a dangerous sport. Any driver involved in a wreck can get hurt. Every time Carl is involved in an incident, he gets completely ripped apart. If Carl lied about it and said "I didn't meant it", he would get criticized. When he mans up and admits that he is not going to get pushed around, he gets torn apart. I think this is more about people hating Carl Edwards than this is about being concerned with the racing.

David Newton
  (2:49 PM)

Disagree. I think it had more to do with the blantant intent and where it was on the track more than anything. I also don't think Carl would have done that to anybody else. I believe he feels he has a get out of jail free card with BK because so many people complained about him earlier in the year.

Eric (VA)

Do you think that in a few years once all the heavy hitters are in that Dale Jarrett will make the Hall of Fame?

David Newton
  (2:50 PM)

Maybe more than a few, but yes and he'll deserve it.

Mark (Iowa)

Any information on what caused Kevin Harvick's wreck Saturday night? And anything on his sponsor for next year?

David Newton
  (2:50 PM)

Nothing on the wreck, but still hearing Budweiser is close.

Jeremy (Port Angeles, WA)

How about this severe penalty for Carl Edwards 2,000,000.00 fine, 500 point penalty & 2 year probation.

David Newton
  (2:51 PM)

Might be a hard check to write.

Tracy (CT)

With this um incident on Saturday does that also prove that Cup drivers need to get out of NW races. I bet a few of the cars that Carl wrecked have the same budget for the whole year that Aflac paid for the one race. Also The Cat in the Hat must have been mad at Carl for wrecking all those RFR cars too.

David Newton
  (2:52 PM)

I won't say they need to get out, but what kind of example did CE set for young drivers coming up?

Jesse (Winston-Salem)

Where can we see the video of NHRA moto rider Michael Phillips trashing Amanda Speed's brother?

David Newton
  (2:53 PM)

I'd google for it. Asked my colleague Terry Blount in the seat next to me and he was unsure as well.

Aaron (Bath, Me)

Who's your pick to win the title this season? Will Jeff Gordon win the championship this year or will us fans of the 24 have to wait once again?

David Newton
  (2:54 PM)

As I said on NASCAR Now I'd be crazy not to pick JJ, but I believe Jeff Gordon or Jeff Burton will surprise. Yep, I'm crazy.

Pete (WV)

Do you figure by picking Gordon to win every race that sooner or later he has to break his 48 race losing streak?

David Newton
  (2:54 PM)

Don't you think that'll work?

Emily (NJ)

I love how Harvick and Jeff Gordon jump at the opportunity to trash Carl. Wasn't just a few short weeks ago that Jeff took out about 5 cars at Sonoma? Oh, wait, that was unintentional. Ask Truex and Sadler how they feel about that?

David Newton
  (2:54 PM)

Again, it's where Jeff made the move and how it was done.

Eric (VA)

Where do you think Juan Pablo will finish this weekend?

David Newton
  (2:55 PM)

3rd.

John (Illinois)

If the Bristol Motor Speedway could be picked up and moved to Chicago, would they still sell out 165,000 seats? Is it the track or the market that is keeping the seats half full in Chicago?

David Newton
  (2:55 PM)

The uniqueness of being in the hills of Tennessee adds to the mystique of Bristol. Not sure it would be the same in Chicago, but it certainly would help sell tickets.

Tyler (Carrolton, TX)

Hey David, you've seen these drivers up close. honestly. is there any driver in cup who could take Carl Edwards in a no-holds barred fist fight?

David Newton
  (2:56 PM)

I'd take Kevin Harvick. Tony Stewart would be hard to handle because he could get on top of Edwards and he would have tough getting up.

Chuck (Cleveland)

Do you think NASCAR will park Edwards like they did to Harvick years back after his repeated problems with other drivers?

David Newton
  (2:56 PM)

Not park, but punish yes.

Scott (Kansas City)

Who is less popular amongst their peers in the garage....Carl Edwards or Kurt Busch?

David Newton
  (2:57 PM)

Such negativity here. If I am forced to make a choice I'll say Carl, but I don't think it's overwhelming on either driver.

josh (texas)

can we blame junior now for jj winning at sonoma.

David Newton
  (2:57 PM)

Give him credit. JJ did.

Mike (MI)

David, couldn't they make the chase final more exciting simply by giving more points for the win? And while they're at it, stop giving points places 31-43, that way the points leader still has a chance to get a 0 late in the race.

David Newton
  (2:58 PM)

I like both ideas, but there's a strong push for elimination.

john (titusville,fl)

man is jeff gordon looking like he's going to win the cup or what? can anyone help dale jr win one .

David Newton
  (2:59 PM)

He's got my vote. Junior is on his own.

Scott (Kansas City)

Don't Kenseth and Biffle despise Carl as well? That says a lot about you if your own teammates feel that way.

David Newton
  (3:01 PM)

I wouldn't say despise, but they're not the typical love ya teammates. On that note, have to get back to the summit. Thanks for all the questions. Will try to get to more on Twitter at @DNewtonespn if you ask. Later.
