Hey everybody! Thanks for joining. Send your questions in now and we will get started shortly!
Each professional sports stadium has it's own little quirks that play into home field advantage. How do you anticipate the new Meadowlands favoring the Giants during home games?
JJ, wud up. We'll find out but during our one practice that we got to see there, there was wind coming through the open sides of the stadium. It might not be as windy as the old stadium but there is still definitely a wind factor. Hopefully the turf will be broken in by then so that won't be a problem. But the Giants need to be in the stadium a bit more to see what the advantages and disadvantages are. One thing is for sure, fans need to bring their money because concessions are pricey!
Ohm, I have to ask with T.O still out there wouldnt it be a good idea to give Eli a big guy and a threat to open up the O with our lack of Running game.
GB, I don't see that happening. The Giants are loaded at wide receiver and I hear what you are saying but TO's presence would stunt the growth of their receivers. Mario Manningham and Hakeem Nicks need more experience and Ramses Barden is hoping to see snaps too. TO would only take snaps away and then there's the potential of drama. You don't need Eli feeling like he has to get somebody the ball. He already had somebody like that when he had Shockey.
Giants definitely should be improved up-front and in the secondary but do you think the LB unit can hold their own?
Ben, biggest question of the season. And no way to answer it until the season starts. Personally, I am not sure. We just simply do not know what the Giants have there. There is a lack of experience and a lot of linebackers have a lot to prove. The youth and athleticism may be there but the experience isn't. Goff, Sintim, Dillard, Wilkinson and others are just unproven really. And even Boley has to show he can stay healthy and be the guy the Giants think he can be. The thinking, though, is that the front line will make their jobs easier.
What do you think the Running Back depth chart will look like for the start of the season?
Hey Ben! Well I actually wrote a breakdown of the unit for today in Day 2 of our training camp breakdown of each unit. Yesterday was the quarterback position. Check it out http://espn.go.com/blog/newyork/giants/post/_/id/608/training-camp-preview-the-rbs
how is perry fewell running the defense? do you expect more sacks this year than last?
Nick, hard to say. We need to see him implement his defense because what we didn't see too much in the offseason training practices. But I expect him to mix up his coverages, disguise a lot and experiment with bringing his defensive ends from different spots. I do expect the sacks to go up with more depth up front and a healthy line. I think Osi will come back better than last year.
Will Barden have a role outside of red zone situations?
Mac! Ramses has to show more consistency in camp. If he does, then I'd like to think he will get more snaps than just red zone. But with Smitty, Nicks and Manningham, it will be hard. He has some catching up to do.
Will the Giants have all of their draft pickd signed by the first day of camp!
Kev, good question. I'd like to think so. Jason Pierre-Paul's agent is Drew Rosenhaus so I guess you never know. But my guess is the Giants will get them in by Aug. 1. I don't think any of the other first or second round picks have signed yet... not completely sure but haven't seen much on that front yet. So the Giants aren't alone.
Do you think its safe to have Aaron Ross fielding punts? I mean the guy has two bad hamstrings and cant stay on the field and we need all the DBs we have...
Big Ben... yeah, we are thinking on the same page. I rather keep him out of the line of fire. Let him focus on staying healthy and getting back to form at CB. But Ross did return punts at Texas so the Giants have put him in the contender list to replace Hixon. I rather see Sinorice Moss there I think.
Will Jacobs (and I guess the O-line as well) bounce back this year?
Mac, I think so. I think Jacobs was injured last year and the offensive line was banged up as well. They are a proud unit and they are determined to redeem themselves from last year's fiasco. I think Bradshaw will have a nice bounce-back season as well and I am curious to see what Andre Brown has in camp as well.
What is the Giants' K situation? Are they all in with Tynes? I went to Wake Forest and saw they signed and cut Sam Swank a couple of times- he was great in college. Did he fail to impress in his workouts?
B, yeah I think it's Tynes. Swank was released to make room for the rookie draft picks. I don't think it was that he was bad or anything. But Tynes is their man.
Who leads the G-Men in tackles this season?
Masta-Killer! Wud up. A lot depends on who emerges at middle linebacker. My guess is Goff or Boley at OLB could rack up the tackles. If Dillard wins the job, put him in there. I can't wait to see how Boley does in Perry Fewell's system.
Ohm, are the g-men confident in Dodge, or will they look elsewhere?
Chris, I think they are. They released the other punter, Jy Bond, to make room for their draft picks to be signed. They invested their last draft pick in Dodge. And they will have Feagles mentor Dodge. I thought Dodge and Bond would battle it out in camp but when they released Bond, it figured to open it up for Dodge.
Ohm's Law! Sinorice Moss can't possibly make the Jints squad again this year can he? He's been hanging on for several years and seems like a wasted roster space. There must be someone else who can handle return duties other than Moss now that Hixon is out. Thanks.
Wud up Vinnie from Columbus... Buckeye? SMoss can definitely make the squad again. Sure. Especially with Hixon going down. Moss can be the returner and depth at WR as well. He's still speedy. But this may be his final run with the Giants if he doesn't produce or get snaps. I think the Giants are looking for returners, they have looked at what is on the wire but there isn't much, or so it seems. We'll have to wait to see who gets cut out of camps around the league during training camp.
Is Coughlan gonna get canned if the Giants dont have a winning record this year?
B.S... yes, I think so. I think Mr. Mara wants to win and when he sounded the alarm at the end of last season, he put everybody on red alert. If the Giants fail to make the playoffs again, I think you can say the coaching staff could be changed. Mara won't tolerate another season like last year.
Which rookie do you think will have the most impact this season?
MK... Linval Joseph. Homeboy is big, athletic, strong and can get some push up front. If Dillard can win the middle linebacker job, then it would be Dillard. But I think Joseph is going to be a player from everything I have heard.
ohm, way to keep my guessing on this new chat time. i was wondering what you takes were on the lack a faith in big blue by the media. ESPN's ultimate rankings put us as the 14th best team in the league behind teams such as the falcons and dolphins. As well, madden has the giants ranked as an 81 overall. What's up with the hate? How am i supposed to beat my ravens friends in a little friendly madden with all this hate?
Hey my man Henry... don't blame me. I don't make the chat schedule. Actually filling in for my homeboy Adam Rubin. He was supposed to go today but then couldn't make it so they asked me to fill in. Madden has the Giants ranked 81 overall eh? I don't think you can call it hate H... I mean, they had a bad season last year. A lot of questions surrounding the offensive line (are they getting old), the running game (can Jacobs still do it and stay healthy), the defense (will Fewell get them to become a top unit again)... it's understandable that people will be sleeping on the Giants. They were 8-8 last season. I know they had injuries but do you really believe they are a top-10 team? They have the potential to be a top-10 team but last year left a really bad taste with a lot of people.
Have we seen Eli peak or is he still growing?
Chris, I think Eli is entering his prime. I don't think we have seen him peak by any means. He still is inconsistent at times and that means he can get better for sure. I definitely think he keeps growing and this is his team now.
Forget all the questions about who the returner will be this year. The G-Men are bringing back Dave Meggett!
Mike, as a Redskins fan growing up, I hate Meggett! He was a beast! LOL.
GO DALLAS!!! I know its not a question... so here: are there any good free agent CBs?
Delicious! Giants fans aren't going to be happy with you for posting Go Dallas in the chat. I don't know if they are going to clown you for being a Cowboys fan or posting your name as Delicious. It's all good with me though, De-lish!
Running game will be huge to take some pressure off Eli. But, I think the biggest Q is the LB core. Was Pierces injury really a career ender? Why couldnt they bring him back?
Leesburg... close to my hometown of Silver Spring... and home of great outlets right? AP said he would need more surgery on his neck to continue playing. So he opted not to. I think the Giants knew that and it was time for a change. He suffered a serious neck injury. So that is why they didn't bring him back.
How is kenny philips injury. Is he going to be back from training camp? Who do you think the kick returner will be since Hixon out for the year? Thanks
Adam, We haven't seen KP since last month but he has said that he is still on track to practice in camp. He is taking it slow and he said the biggest positive sign was that he had no swelling in his knee. I think at kick return, you will see some Bradshaw and somebody else. At punt return, could be S. Moss or Manningham or somebody they pick up.
Can Eli beat his brother this year and get that monkey off his back?
GB, Don't see that happening in Week 2. Peyton wins again.
Always a Cowgirls fan around to annoy people. Back to theG-Men, will the Giants look for any LBs released during camp?
Mofunky! I think it's a definite possibility. But I get the feeling that they are truly satisfied with what they got on their roster. But Jerry Reese said not to discount looking outside if something comes up.
i had heard a rumor about the giants looking into Marshawn Lynch is this true ?
P, haven't heard that one. Marshawn is a good RB despite the baggage. But I think the Giants want to see how the health is of their running backs and what they have. I don't see them getting Marshawn.
Which DE and DTs on the squad right now dont make the team? Tollefson has to stick!
BS, no need to worry. I think Tollefson makes it. They like him but he does have a ton of rushers ahead of him and the rookie too.
I live within 5 min to outlets Ohm. Support your countries Air Traffic Controllers. Go Blue! Perrys new D-scheme, from what youve seen him do in Buffalo, can we compare it at all to Spags scheme?
Go Blue? Like Michigan? Or the Giants? Because we can't have no Wolverines in my chat! Just playing. I think Perry will be a bit like Spags, but not completely the same. But he has shown some creativity in OTAs by using four defensive end fronts and mixing up and disguising stuff.
Yo Ohm.....there is talk about adding another CB. I know I've asked you before, but what do you think are the chances of DJ Johnson making the squad.
Wud up my man. I think the Giants can definitely use another cornerback. I think with DJ we got to see how it shakes out in camp. Could be a numbers crunch you know?
Will the giants ever get a DB that can cover i am tired of seeing our D-Backs getting burnt ever since sehorn left
GB, I hear ya. I think they are hoping C-Webster has a bounce back season, Ross stays healthy and TT remains solid.
Do the Knicks make the playoffs this year?
B.S... I was just talking to Frank Isola about this yesterday. He says no. I say they get close to 40 wins and might squeeze in but with the way the team is constituted now, I can see them missing the playoffs. East got a lot tougher homeboy.
Do you think Hakeem Nicks has the potential to be one of the top receivers in the league this season?? He has the exact make-up of Boldin and he led the league in YAC last season. I love this guy!!!
Luigi, I think Nicks is very explosive. And his potential is definitely dynamic. The comparison to Boldin is a good one. I like that. Great run after catch receiver. He has to get more consistent but I can see a lot more big plays out of the kid.
Ohm bringing the heat even during a slow chat. I like it. So let's both make one way too early Giants prediction, since its only July all we can do is speculate, right? I say we see a revamped version of Earth, Wind and Fire, but while they have 3 RB's get over 700 yards, none top 1000. What about your way too early prediction?
Wud up Mikey! Slow days of summer right? Plus just got back from vacay so I am still missing me some Caribbean sun and water. So you are saying three rbs are effective but none over 1,000. Hmm... I do think Andre Brown will emerge this season as a nice third back. But I think the Giants need a 1,000 yard rusher. So I am going to go with my boy Brandon and say he gets back to 1,000 and Bradshaw maybe gets 700-800 yards. How about that for a way-too early prediction?
How is Tuck's Shoulder? Can he get back to being a beast?
Joey, Tuck says it is better and he will be fine. But Tuck always downplays everything so I guess we will see when he takes some hits. But I think Tuck gets back to being a beast again with Osi and Kiwi on the other side and more push up front with a healthy defensive line. Fewell will find a way to get Tuck to the QB.
How has Kenny Phillips progressed so far? Its scary to think how good this secondary can be with him and Rolle!!! By far the best in the NFC east in my opinion.
Luigi, if KP is healthy, and he told me back in April he thinks he will be better than that Dallas game because he played hurt in that game, then yes, he and Rolle will be ridiculous.
Do you miss playin me 19x a yr??
I miss Manny being Manny.
would you agree that for Jacobs and Bradshaw to be most affective they need a 3rd guy with that Ward type quality?not sure if Ware, Brown, or Johnson have thatJacobs will never play 16 games as a #1 guy....to big with his knees exposed.....and Bradshaw will always drop the rock
AA, I think Brown can help fill that void left by D-Ward. But I am not sure if he can be as good as D-Ward. I agree with you, Jacobs running style leaves him exposed to taking monster hits. But I think Bradshaw, if he is truly healthier than last year, can be a big factor. That guy who can bust an 80-yarder at any point again. That should open things up.
Are you comfortable with Sorgi backing up Eli? I think he is a major downgrade from Carr and if Eli gets hurt and misses time - season is over...
B, I think Sorgi will help Eli from the perspective that he he served with Peyton for all those years. But you know how it works, if Eli goes down, the Giants are in a world of hurt. Even if Carr were around.
so what 8 teams are a head of the knicks in the east? i got miami, boston, orlando, atlanta...who else?
BS... let's see... Miami, Orlando, Boston, Atlanta, Chicago, Milwaukee, Charlotte... and then maybe you got Knicks battling it out with improved Washington and Sixers with Evan Turner and others...
in your opinion does Nicks take over Smiths #1 spot before the end of the season?
Naw... Stevie stays number one but Nicks can be the big-play guy. But when Eli needs that big third down, I can see him going to Smith.
Alright guys, thanks so much for coming out for the chat. See you all next week and we are fast approaching camp. Check out the blog for the breakdown of all the units before camp. See you guys next week!
