Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (11:57 AM)

Greetings from Las Vegas Fight Freaks. Big weekend with the loaded Marquez-Diaz II card. Should be an excellent show. New notebook is up and several blogs and news stories this week, so check it out and check out the updated schedule. Now let's get to it.

Garth (Stamford, CT)

Happy Friday Dan! Juan Diaz sounds like a guy who already has one foot out the door of boxing. There is no way he is 100% focused and ready for the fight tomorrow with his current mindset. He's a great kid and I wish him the best but Marquez wins by UD.

Dan Rafael
  (11:58 AM)

I don't agree. I think he's very focused and ready for this fight.

Bobby (Louisville)

Dan, do you think Ross Greenburg really gave his hardest effort to get the fight done? Seems like his statement last Monday was very weak and passive. He, in my mind is the ultimate force to get the fight DONE

Dan Rafael
  (11:59 AM)

Knowing how badly he wanted to make the fight, I am certain he gave it everything he had.

John (Grand Rapids, Mi)

Danimaniac,Any chance the Seth Mitchell fight gets bumped up the 1 hour free preview now too? Or will it be headlining the free Internet stream?

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 PM)

Seth is not fighting on the preview. Had a chance to talk to him yesterday. He's a good dude and really motivated for the fight. Even though he's 28, he's only boxed for about three years and he has come along nicely. If there is one American heavyweight prospect to at least keep an eye on, he's it right now.

ram (elizabeth, nj)

dan, i think paulie malignaggi or ivan calderon can knock paul briggs out in 28 seconds

Bobby (Louisville)

I can't believe how everyone is talking about Margarito's performance vs. Garcia in may. He looked horrible! old, slow, sloppy, no defense, and wide punches. And pathetic journeyman Garcia took him the distance- have you seen the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

I did see it and he looked like butt.

courtney jackson (lindenwold, nj)

hi dan, is there any deals being done for the next fight for timothy bradley?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

His pronmoter, Gary Shaw, has been talking with Richard Schaefer about a possible Khan fight in December. I doubt it happens though. I would think it's more likely for a Devon Alexander fight in January.

Shane (Sydney, New South Wales)

Hey Dan, im a massive fan of your skills. You say it how it is. But i find it a bit disheartening that you leave certain fighters out. Who is to say Anthony Mundine couldn't beat Pavlik at 160? And whats wrong with Martinez vs Mundine? I like watching Mundine fight, reminds me of his father but more speed and hes more slick. Is it anything personal against him? Be honest mate, im a big fan of yours.

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

Mundine is good to watch but he is not in the real conversations for real fights because he stays in Australia and doesn't fight top guys. Nothing wrong with Martinez-Mundine but it's not a realistic fight right now unless Martinez wants to go to Australia, which I don't see happening. The fight means nothing in the US because Mundine is unknown here.

Hugo (Ft. Lauderdale)

DTM, Shout out to all the other aspiring freaks! (from Alt + Tab territory!) Dan, IYO what will Diaz have to do to win, what would the hypothetical scenario/strategy be? I think Diaz has a sloppy-but stiff jab-that he used effectively at times and brought his chin into uppercuts too much. What do you think?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Diaz can win, but he needs to be tighter on defense and not keep leaning into Marquez's nasty uppercut. If he gets cut again, he needs to stay calm. It freaked him out last time (and in the loss to Campbell).

Mark (Orlando, FL)

Boxing Haiku:Marquez VS Diaz / Oh what a night it will be / Yes there will be blood

jonesy (england)

hey dan just wondering if your gonna be watchin george groves tomorrow night, hes also got the ducker in his corner too lol

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

I will be watching.

Greg (Armonk, NY)

Should I buy the PPV tomorrow?

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

If you are a Freak, you know it's a helluva card. If you can afford it why wouldn't you buy it?

luis (sealy)

if diaz wins who do who think he will fight next, thanks dan

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

If Diaz wins, he plans to stay at lightweight and his mandatory would be Katsidis, so I think a rematch would be possible. I could also see the possibility of a fight with Linares if Linares beats Juarez on the undercard. Diaz-Linares would be a very interesting fight.

Bobby (Louisville)

Hey Dan! more devastating all-time knockout- Cooney/Norton OR Pac/Hatton??

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

Both nasty, but I gotta go with Cooney-Norton for pure violense. Cooney almost took his head off with a flurry of brutal shots.

Bobby (Louisville)

Hey Dan! So, how's Goosen's search for a PWill welterweight opponent going?!

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

I think about as well as O.J.'s search for the real killer.

Karl (work)

Can I get a link for last weeks notebook. I missed it and cannot find it.

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

It's there. Check my archive or do a search for Daniel Jacobs, since he was the focus.

Kevin (Fall River)

Did Golden Boy go too far in attacking George Kimball or do you feel it was warranted? Was it truely sloppy journalism?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

I thought the story he authored bordered on libel and had all kinds of factual problems, so I do not blame GB for the attack. It was a very badly reported story.

Stevey Nipas CA [via mobile]

Wat up Dan ? If Marques beats Diaz, he might fight Khan. IMO Khan is too big, young and fast for Marquez. Your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

Obviously, Khan would have the size and speed advantage, but we all know what Marquez can do. It's the kind of fight that has happened all through boxing history -- great veteran giving a top youngster a test. I think it would be interesting if Marquez wins tomorrow.

Paul (Carlsbad)

Whats your official prediction for the big fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

I like Marquez on a decision in another good fight.

Rico (San Antonio)

Dan, and the chicken of the year goes to Mayweather, Haye or Povetkin?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Mayweather.

JB (Toronto)

The one thing that no has mentioned since Rojas pulled out of the Gamboa fight is that it effectively screwed Mikey Garcia out of a chance to fight for a piece of the title (not that it means much these days).

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Not true. He is still scheduled for an eliminator with Lock. If he wins, then he would get the shot. There was talk of Mikey going right to Salido, but that was never finalized at all.

Roy (Reno)

If you are not fast enough to hit alt+tab. Just deny this chat ever took place.

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

LOL.

Wes (Philly)

What are the chances that the Pacquiao vs Margarito fight ends up in Atlantic City?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

It's one of a few possibilities.

Malik (Philly)

Now that Margarito appears to be the choice for Pac, where does Cotto go for a major fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

There are three names out there Top Rank has mentioned -- Chavez Jr, Angulo and Martirosyan. Bring me Angulo any day of the week. Chavez I doubt they would really make and Martirosyan isn't ready nor do I think HBO would buy it.

Jonathan (Atlanta)

What fight tomorrow night are you most intrigued by?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

I like the whole card but Guerrero-Casamayor is a really tough call. I think it could be a pretty good fight.

Keith H (Seattle)

Good morning, Dan. I thought I was listening to the smooth jazz station, but I guess I'm not because Floyd's people tell me jazz doesn't exist.

Randy (NYC)

Dan, I'm curious why you put Zab at #5 at 140lbs when he hasn't fought in that division since 2003. I know he announced going back down but his last fight was over the 140lb limit, no?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

He fought Santa Cruz weighing 141 pounds with the clear intention to campaign at junior welter.

Joey (South Carolina)

I?m looking forward to the fight tomorrow, but the card is not THAT much better than any good HBO double header they?ve in the past 2-3 years.

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

Well actually it is because it's 4 solid fights, not 2.

Bryant (Pitt)

If its a Freak card King Freak should pay for the freaks PPV?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

Ummm, no.

Anonymous (Unknown)

Where does Valuev poop figure into all this madness?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

These are my readers.

Jonathan (Atlanta)

I saw an Interview with Shannon Briggs who is in Wales for the "night if Champions" event. He said he's the best ever heavyweight. Why are boxers so delusional?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

Too many shots to the head?

Urine (JMM's cup)

How long until I make an appearance in this chat Dan?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

How long? Not long!

Mark (Long Island)

What's next for Maidana?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

August 28 in Argentina against Corley. There is a schedule on espn.com/boxing. Learn to use it or suffer my wrath.

curtis (Washington, DC)

That was a woeful, uninspired performance by the Russian challenger last week on FNF. Very disappointed in what could?ve been a compelling fight had he pressed the action more.

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

I want to see the 22 stiffs Uzelkov beat.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

After Victor Ortiz gets past Vivian Harris on Sept. 18th, do you think Golden Boy will finally put him back against a big name? (I'd go back after Maidana if I were him, so as to finally put away all the naysayers)

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

I'd love to see a Maidana-Ortiz rematch.

darryl p (indianapolis)

who zab judah fighting oct 2nd?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

TBA.

SEAN (DC)

I love tomorrow ppv card but I do not like the main event. Diaz doesn't deserve this spotlight. He already lost to Marquez, a good fight but I didn't feel that he was as competitive as you and other people. I just didn't feel that he was really having an impact against Marquez. Diaz also lost twice to Paulie.

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

You're the kind of guy who would complain about winning an all-expense paid vacation because it meant you had to pack.

jack (fort collins)

sicker upper cut: devon alexander against juan urango or marquez against diaz?

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

Both nasty! But I gotta go with Alexander's, since he lifted Urango off the mat.

Dan (Franklin)

4 solid fights? Jacobs is easily more skilled, Cassamayor is 56 years old and Juan Diaz has 1 foot out of the door, oh ya and rocky Juarez has been in plenty of snoozers, STOP LYING to YOUR readers!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

You hate your mother, you hate apple pie, you think rainbows are ugly and you think Santa is evil. You're also banned.

Alan Brofka (NYC)

What sort of shot do you give Glen Johnson against Tavoris Cloud?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Veteran chance with his ring smarts and energy. Tavoris is still pretty untested, altough he should be the favorite because of his youth and power. I'm looking forward to being at the fight next week.

Joe (NJ)

Do believe that Briggs has gotten an accepted an offer from Vitali for Oct.16

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

They are trying to finalize it and if it gets done that is the date.

Gino (The Bronx)

Message to David Tua?s handlers: shoulder injury my butt! You got exposed.

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Well said.

Phil (Chicago)

Dan, name me one big time fighter who has ducked more good opponents than Mayweather. Just one, Dan.

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

There aren't any.

Doc (NB, Mass)

I think Dan from Franklin is Bing's cousin

Leonard Ellerbe (LaLa land)

This chat isn't happening

Bryon (Chicago)

If he never sets foot in the ring again, Jermain Taylor HOF?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

Not even close.

Barry (Pensacola, FL)

Dan, what?s Mrs. DTM up to this weekend? Did you bring her along to Vegas?

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Mrs. DTM is at home dealing with the basement flood and the massive mess of having our floor ripped up the other day to deal with the water and working on getting the new floor.

Tony (Newark)

I would love to see Manny-Margarito in Atlantic City. It?s about time some of these big fights got back to the East Coast.

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

AC would be cool for that fight.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Sean from DC is the kind of guy who would complain about attending ringside for Pac/Mayweather because it would be too noisy

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

Exactly!

Leo (Charlotte)

Do you think Diaz will really retire if he loses?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

I doubt it.

Alex (Kuwait)

The only place I have heard anything about Cotto vs Berto was in this chat last week. Are any of the promoters really pursuing this?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

DiBella and Arum have talked about it, but it's probably unlikely for this year.

Larry (Knoxville)

Mayweathers refusal to fight Manny has done more damage to the image of boxing than Margaritos illegal hand wraps, Paul Briggs apparent dive or even Tysons ear-biting.

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Mayweather's decision not to fight Pacquiao has dragged down the entire sport.

Brock (Illinois)

Banishment back from a long vacation to Hartford. I love it.

miguel (Los Angeles)

To all the naysayers of this fight: Yes diaz lost to Paulie but not at his weight class, yes Marquez Lost to Mayweather, who doesnt? and 2 weight classes higher, so they both are coming off losses but they are still the best 2 lightsweights and when can someone gaurantee and good fight? not often but this fight is gauranteed to be a good one.

Steve (Phoenix)

I will be in Vegas this weekend for some business. Do you know if tickets are still available?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Yes there are and they are priced very well.

Brandon (San Diego)

DTM, a few weeks back I asked how you were looking at starting a fight freak Twitter account. You replied back saying we were closer each week to making the Freaks dream a reality. Are we any closer this week?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

I'm still on the fence.

JD (NY)

Dano---have you watched tape of some of these recent Cruiserweight wars? Helenius-Arslan, Erdei-Fragomeni et al. The division is coming alive after a looong time in purgatory. Might it get some US exposure soon?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

I've seen them all. It's a fun division but has no profile in the US. Most of the top guys are European (other than Cunningham and maybe Godfrey) and the US networks aren't interested in the division. So I wouldn't count on that changing at the moment.

Ty ((Philly))

Floyd chicken of the year instead of Haye?!? Unless your saving Haye for chicken of the decade...you are way off

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

Haye is the Super Chicken. Mayweater just the regular one.

jose suliman (Hell)

I am planning to make Pacquiao margarito for the WBC 154 championship even though both have no meaninful victories at 154.Oh crap my attemp to make a joke about suliman backfired this is actually true.

Brock (Illinois)

I hope Ross gets Green because I think Ross is one of the top of the division. How is his eye coming along?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

I am told the eye is going to heal just fine, which is good to hear.

Aaron (Cincinnati)

I read an article the other day on Floyd having a diamond encrusted ipod.....I'm thinking he will one day regret passing on $40M to face Manny.

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

Floyd will find a way to blow all his money someday. Write that down.

Daniel (Wilmingtong Ca)

DanTheMan, I thought of ordering the fight, but I went and purchased tickets to see it in theatres. I figured it was something new and different. I thought it was funny when the attendant that sold me the tickets at the window told me that out of all the fights they have had at that theatre the only one that didn't sell out was Roy Jones/Bernard Hopkins.

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

That doesn't surprise me. Have fun!

Kevin (Pittsburgh)

Don't be surprised if tomorrow's PPV does better than expected. It's been a lean boxing summer and fight fans are hungry for some action.

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

I agree. I think it will do solid numbers compared to what they need to break even, which is not much more than 100,000.

Nizzi (Des Moines, IA)

So Mayweather gets the winner of Marquez vs. Diaz?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

No, I think Calderon-Segura.

Justin (Seattle)

Worse experience, 24 hours in Hartford or a 24 hour Valuev/Ruiz fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Put it this way, I stayed at the Hartford airport last weekend when I up there to do FNF in the studio and I made sure I was there for less than 24 hours. Flew in about 4:30 Friday to do the show and was out on a 6:10 am Saturday flight.

John (Phoenix)

Angelo DANdee, have you made attempts to get a one-on-one interview with Floyd to get his side of the story?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

I have asked for one and he is not talking to the media right now. That's cool. If he doesn't want to talk no skin off my back.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

dan, any word on love child's opponent yet on his undercard appearance?

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. No opponent yet for him on Aug. 21.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

comments on the khan/bradley war of words?

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

Typical bluster. Let 'em settle it in the ring.

Joe (San Francisco, CA)

What exactly is HBO going to do this fall? There are no big matchups on the horizon. PWill doesn't want Martinez. Cotto/Arum don't seem to want Angulo. I was really hoping HBO would throw some extra money at Gamboa to make the Caballero fight

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

HBO has some work to do on what is right now a pathetic fall.

Al G (DC)

Dan, do you think Jacobs will be positively or negatively affected by the death of his grandma? Have you seen Pirog fight at all? What's your prediction for the fight...

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

I think Daniel will use it as even more motivation. He seems very focused on the fight and I think he'll win. I have seen some Pirog on the Internet and he looks a little stiff but has good skills. Jim Lampley and I talked about him and Jim had watched tape and told me he was reminded of a slighly bigger Javier Castillejo.

Tony (Billings, MT)

Dan, mark this down: Povertkin will regret the day he turned down a chance for the title.

Boxing Newbie (Hong Kong)

I don't understand why Bob has to schedule Manny to fight this year. They could have waited for Shane taking care of Mora or the winner of Tim and Devon or even Zab building up himself again. If the fight (Manny and Cheato) doesn't do well, that could help Floyd to argue he deserves getting more than Manny. What's your thought on this?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Why should Manny not fight? He shouldnt have to wait for anyone. He is a fighter, he fights, he wants to make money. Comprendo?

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Hi Dan, appreciate the fact that you posted oscar's previous comments on pac-mayweather. has he had anything to say for himself or is just used to eating his words? this is far from the first time he has done that. its funny how these bumbling idiots called arum the dishonest one when the other side are the clowns that look like fools.

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Oscar doesn't know if he's coming or going.

Antonio (Anaheim)

I like how you included how much the fighters were earning in your blog, you should do that more often :)

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

I'll see what I can do.

Bobby (Maryland)

Hey Dan, very excited for this weekend! I think Danny Jacobs is a great guy and a tremendous boxer. I would love to see him win this Saturday and eventually down the road fight Fernando Guerrero. I think in a couple years Fernando beats Danny Jacobs. What are your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

In a few years that could be a big fight. Too soon to say who wins that one. If they fought tomorrow I would definitely favor Jacobs.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

I recently read a interview transcript that involved Juan Manuel Marquez, and he confirmed to the press that he is still drinking his own urine. Looks like he is prepared to give a good show.

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

I'm actually the guy who asked him that on a teleconference a week or so ago. Just needed to know.

Greg (Armonk, NY)

I can't decide if I respect Mayweather for only fighting when he feels like it without thinking of the fans, or if I hate him with every last atom in my body.

Anthony (White Plains, NY)

Do you see any merit in Latimore's assessment of Angulo's resume as overrated?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

I think he's being a little over the top but they've done a good job matching Angulo. I know Alcine was a woeful fight but going in I thought Alcine had a decent shot to at least extend him.

Oscar De La Hoya (East LA)

I'm completely different from Arum. Yesterday I was telling the truth, today I am lying.

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

John (NY)

Dano---with Haye and Povetkin basically walking away, Adamek seems to be the most deserving #1 contender on resume.

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Can't disagree.

Derek (edmonton, alberta)

Dan, I'm confused as to how much equity Oscar actually holds in GBP. Does he hold at least P, or has he lost control of his own company and is just being used as a figurehead? Thanks.

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

Oscar owns the largest percentage of the company.

Gabriel (Dallas, Texas)

How much of an effect do you think going up two divisions and coming back down again will have an Marquez?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

I don't think it helps him but he didn't blow up that much to fight Mayweather and he looks in good shape.

Floyd Mayweather (Haiku)

I will not fight you / Manny Pacquiao, not now / Not ever, kapeesh?

miguel (los angeles)

Do the undercard fighters get a percentage of the PPV also?

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

No.

Roy (Reno)

Do you have any info on the validity of Arreola actually taking training seriously? The past two fights we kept hearing how serious he was only to be punked at the weigh in.

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

Who really knows. At this point, I no longer care.

David (Winston-Salem)

Who's calling the fights for HBO tomorrow night?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Lampley and Emanuel.

Paul B (NY, NY)

Danimal- Sorry I am a few min late. I read through the chat so far and only saw a predicion on Jacobs. How about the other fights? Thanks.

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

My picks for the ppv: Marquez, Jacobs, Casamayor and Linares.

Rick (Marina)

Who will do the interviews?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

I would imagine that the fighters will come to ringside and Lampley will handle it.

Andres (miami)

Dan, if you were fighting, what would your entrance music be??..... by the way, have fun at Dandalay bay

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

Dandalay Bay! Love it. We've been over the music before: War Machine by KISS.

Steve (Hartford)

Any Tecate rebate for tomorrow? Do any freaks have a link?

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

One of the Tecate reps I stay in touch with emailed me this the other day, so I am passing it along to the Freaks: Tecate is offering its $20 mail-in-rebate towards the Marquez-Diaz HBO Pay-Per-View event. Consumers in AZ, CA, CO, NV and NM can look for specially-marked cases of Tecate or Tecate Light 12-pack or larger at retail locations to take advantage of this offer.

Winky Wright (School of Boxing Business)

We're proud to announce our new and groundbreaking programs in boxing business negotiation with new professor, Floyd Mayweather Jr. Also guest appearance during the semester by Leonard Ellerbe, with his critically acclaimed seminar, "What is the meaning of negotiation?... No really what is it because I don't know"

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

Hilarious.

Rick (Marina)

Did you order the ppv before you left to dvr it?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

Yes.

Jim (CA)

JMM's urine or Valuev's poop?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

I'm not even sure what to say.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Dan, could you elaborate a bit on why you are picking casamayor over guerrero? i'd be interested in you assessment - just makes the fight that much more intriguing to me!

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

I don't know. Just sort of a feeling. I don't think Casamayor is THAT far gone and he knows this is it for him. Guerrero is coming way up in weight. Just a feeling.

David (Houston)

Does the proposed catchweight for pac-margarito bother you or doesnt matter to you either way?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

I always like to see title bouts at the division limit and if a guy wants to weigh less, fine. But there is so much about this fight that bothers me that the catch weight isn't on top of the list. But it is annoying.

Dave, NJ [via mobile]

How is the atmosphere at the Dandalay Bay compared to the last time you were there for Hopkins Jones?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

Sort of like the difference between being lost on a country road in the middle of Mississippi (like I have been) or being in midtown Manhattan at 5 pm on a Friday.

robb (north andover, ma)

super dan, i'm not one so well versed in technology but are dvr's a good way to save and keep fights? do they burn to dvd's?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

I record all US televised boxing to my DVR and then burn it to a disc so I know the exact length of the show and can set my recorder for that length of time with the "flexible recording" options my Panasonic machines have.

Ali (Southfield, MI)

I also like Casamayor over Guerrero. Casamayor can make it kind of a dirty fight and Guerrero didn't seem to like that very much against Yordan.

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

That is an excellent point I had not thought of.

Taylor (SLC, UT)

Funny how us freaks seem to be fascinated by Valuev's poop. That being said...it's got to be huge don't you think?

Nizzi (Des Moines, IA)

Dan, hopefully you can clear this up for me. Why is Martinez considering moving down to 155 to fight Angulo. If he is going to fight at basically the Jr. Middleweight limit why didn't he just hang onto his Jr. Middleweight title?

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

He is as a concession to make the fight. He wanted to keep the middleweight title because it meant a lot to him to have the same title as his boxing hero, Carlos Monzon.

Cristian (Jersey City)

Maybe Mayweather can fight a Pacquiao sculpture made of Valuev's poop.

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Quote of the chat.

Hans (Burlington,VT)

Just read Larry Merchant's 'Ringside Seat at the Circus'...his old collection of newspaper columns...have you ever considered doing something similar? On the same note, do you think Larry will ever write a full fledged boxing book?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

I have not read it but Larry has told me about it and I have asked him for a copy. And I have encouraged Larry many times to write a book about his times in boxing.

psycho (LaLaLand)

To all the freaks who suggest that Dan Rafael is a Golden Boy hugger , read the quote on the notebook. Failure to comply and get Dan-slapped.

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

According to many I am both a shill for TR and GB. I must be doing something right.

Bill Nye (USA)

Bigger turd -Valuev's poop or Suliaman himself?

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

I'm not going there.

Mike C. (Portland, Or.)

The only thing DTM is, is a Love Child hugger.

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

I can live with that.

jack (fort collins)

if you're going to be in st. louis next week for the fight, be sure to stop by ted drews for some frozen custard. it won't disappoint.

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

I'm looking forward to my first trip to Missouri!

Justin (Seattle)

Here's a good way to judge: If all sides think you are dissing them and sympathizing with the other, you're in the right spot.

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

Exactly.

Drew (Cleveland)

DTM, thanks for posting the fighters purses. Very interesting stuff.

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

You got it.

WBC (Everywhere)

Does Valuev's poop qualify for an Interim WBC Diamond Belt?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

For a small sanctioning fee, of course.

Charles (DFW)

Okay, explain this to me. GBP spent $4 million on the Freak PPV Card. If it does 500,000 buys at $50, that's $25 million. Why can't these guys like Casamayor get paid more than $50K for fighting? I know there's overhead and advertising expenses, etc. but that's still a paltry amount.

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

First off, it ain't doing 500,000 buys. But whatever it grosses from ppv, lop of about 50 percent, which goes to the dish and cable operators.

Jason (Riverside, CA)

Hi Dan. Any Bat Phone/Bat E-mail news during the chat that we can be allowed to know about yet?

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

You are on a need to know basis and as of now, no.

Ali (Southfield, MI)

Hey Dan, anything interesting come of the meeting between Mayweather and Cotto in Puerto Rico? I read it was something about co-promotion?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

They are talking about co-promoing bouts in PR together, not about fighting each other.

Mrs. DTM (soggy basement)

I wanted to give a shoutout to the freaks. And guys and gals, please encourage Dan the Man to take me to Abu Dhabi if the fight lands there -- I think it would be awesome.

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

The Pac-'Cheato fight won't wind up being there, so don't sweat it.

Marc (Malden, MA)

Careful Dan. The WBA and WBC will make Mayweather the Chicken Champ and Haye the Chicken Super Champ.

Steve (Phoenix)

No special guests for today's chat?

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

Not unless somebody breals into my hotel room.

Jay (Philly)

What came 1st, Floyd Mayweather or the egg?

John (Phoenix)

Dan, have you eaten at Strip Steak yet? Best resturant an Mandalay. The fries to start the meal are AMAZING!

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

Eaaten there several times. Excellent place, although I prefer Craftsteak at MGM.

victor (north jersey)

ive been on plenty of boxing chats and the top 5 people who didn't know that mayweather pac negotiations were going on post has been spreading the net has to be one of the most hilariious posts ever..DTM gettin love all over boxin forums

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

1. Amish People2. Taliban Forces3. Budhist monks4. Nuns5. Leonard Ellerbe

Steve (WI)

"Maybe Mayweather can fight a Pacquiao sculpture made of Valuev's poop." No thanks. That fight would be a real stinker. See what I did there, Dan?

Cristian (Jersey City)

Mayweather should host a 1 hour special on ESPN called the Decision and then explain for an hour that he has no idea what they are talking about.

jorge (tucson)

what is it gonna take to stop calling margarito cheato? will a win vs pac do it?

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

'Cheato.

Jay (Philly)

Longer running Soap Opera, All My Children of Floyd-Pac negotiations?

kevin (Milwaukee)

Jeff Mayweather give a interview say the fight stalled because Mayweather insists on testing up until fight day. Do you think he'll back down or Pac give in. Or will this just be a fight that never happens?

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

Jeff Mayweather doesn't know jack about what really happened.

Lee (Norwalk, CA)

If you lie, and someone calls you a liar, what can Judd Burstein do about it?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

Make your life miserable.

Tony (Tampa)

Dan,Nice blog on the Diaz-Marquez bout. Especially like the breakdown of the purses for each fighter. If a fighter like Marquez is getting a cool $1mill how much will he actually pocket after taxes, the promoter's cut, paying his cornermen, etc? $400K?

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

Not sure, but I suspect Marquez will receive more than the official $1 million because of television revenue from Mexico and the fact that his promotional company is involved in the fight and some money will go toward it as well. That's one reason the official numbers on the bout agreements are not always real. There are ways they divert money for tax purposes.

Joe (NY)

Buy or sell...Margarito gets the one fight exemption and Nov 13 ends up in Vegas...

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

I think at the end of the day, he will receive a provisional license in Nevada.

ron (cleveland)

For your fight collection, what do you burn to disc:1) the whole show2) from the walk-in to the interviews3) from the bell to the decision. I hate that the PPV quality is usually less than the replay on HBO, but HBO never shows the fighters walk in or introduced!

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

I burn the entire telecast and I also do the same for the HBO replays. For long PPVs, I split them in half between fights but leave a few seconds of overlap so nothing is missed. I am a bit obsessive.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

What exactly is a provisional contract?" Is it a fancy way of allowing a single fight for someone in "Cheato's situation?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

It means they would license him for only one bout as opposed to a general license that lasts a year for as many fights as you can fight.

robb (north andover)

should we expect to see you in FNF tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

Yes, I will be talking to Brian Kenny about Saturday's fight and what's up in Vegas.

Charles (DFW)

So did Margarito just need to apply in California to get the process moving in Nevada again?

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

Yes, that is what the commission asked him to do.

Charles (DFW)

I'm getting my DVD recorder this week. My fiance will be so happy. Of our 100 hours of DVR space she has only about 4 to herself. The rest are mine.

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

Get a Panasonic. By far the best IMO and has flexible recording.

Roberto (Miami)

Dan, big ups for putting Louis C.K. on my radar...I have no idea how I didn't hear of him before that. Louie on FX kills.

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

He's hilarious and I am a big fan.

Steve (Hartford)

Is Andy Lee on TV tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

Not sure if he will make air.

Jonathan (Atlanta)

I feel bad for Valuevs mother having to change those diapers.

Shawn (Tempe)

Is it wrong to assume money paid to Marquez from mexican television wouldn't be subject to Nevada or federal taxes?

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

Obviously.

John (LA)

Are you more proud of you boxing tape or boxing poster collection?

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

I love 'em both.

Justin (Sactown,CA)

Dan Rafael con charactar!

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

LOL!!! Do I now have to shavve my tongue?

David (Winston-Salem)

What about all the fights tonight? Will you watch them live or just check them out when you get home on the DVR?

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

I'll watch 'em Sunday night.

Gerardo (AZ)

Dan, just for fun a friend and I put together a top 10 of mexican fighters right now. Does it sound more or less right to you? 10-A Demarco. 9-A Mares. 8-L Andrade. 7-J Solis. 6-G Segura. 5-H Soto. 4-A Angulo. 3-R Marquez. 2-JM Marquez. 1-F Montiel. (yes, Canelo just missed).

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

Not bad but I would have included Canelo over Andrade at this point.

Justin (Sactown,CA)

DTM, I'm going to go with Juan Diaz by Decision. I think folks are overlooking the amount of wear and tear on Marquez at this point of his career. Plus he is dropping from welter to lightweight at his age and it is going to take its toll.

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

It is a reasonable point. That is one of the things that makes it an interesting fight.

Tom E (Jersey City, NJ)

And JMM should rank #1. He's on most top 10 p4p lists, Montiel is definitely not.

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

I didn't agree with his order, just his list. And I would probably include JC Jr. on there too.

ron (cleveland)

Dan, how does HBO or Showtime make money when the fights they air pull in good ratings? I know for network TV it's in commercials but never understood it for the premium channels.

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

Fights dont generate real revenue like ads do. Those networks rely on subscriptions. Boxing is an important piece of programming to their subscribers, so they have to keep giving them the programming to retain the subscribers. The ratings of the shows on premium cable are dramatically overrated compared to their importance to a brodcast or basic cable network.

Chris (Boston)

Dan, Why is Max/Larry not on this broadcast? It makes the PPV feel second-rate almost.

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

HBO trying to save peanuts on the budget for some dumb reason.

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

And I agree -- not having either of them cheapens the telecast.

Gus (Passaic, Nj)

Is there any way to order fight posters? Im really digging the Juanma-Marquez poster and would like to start up a collection.

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

Go to spboxing.com.

Shawn (Tempe)

Another way to get fight posters, if you're local sports bar carries the fights, ask the manager if they have an extra one.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

dan, interesting to read your scoring for both marquez-pacquaio fights. one question though, how in the hell did marquez survive that 1st round of the 1st fight? Then, to fight back to a draw? just amazing!

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

I had round 1 10-6 for Pacquiao and Marquez won most of the rest of the rounds on my card.

Max (NY)

Dan if MAX kellerman is not on the broadcast was is due to his recent comment regarding about the promoters GBP n TR?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

Absolutely not. He was never scheduled to do this PPV.

Pete (NYC)

One thing I'm not sure has been mentioned-- Marquez-Diaz was fight of the year in a year (2009) that had like a dozen candidate-type fights. So it wasn't just a fight of the year, it was a really good fight of the year.

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

Agreed.

Doc (NB, Mass)

Guerrero's a very likeable guy but am I crazy for thinkin Casa aint afraid of no Ghost?

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

Nope.

Dave (DC)

If I write for a college campus newspaper, can I get a press pass to a fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

I dont handle credentials.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

dan, thanks for the spboxing.com info! very cool site with a nice classic set of posters! i will be ordering the carbajal-gonzalez poster asap. thanks again.

Ross (Indianapolis)

Dan, I am ridiculously hung over and this chat is the only thing keeping me coherent at work today. Thanks as always!

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

We at ESPN.com do not condone drinking and chatting.

Ryan (Saratoga Springs, NY)

Dan reading your chat on my iphone from the track in Saratoga then heading to the Partying Glass, then to the city center for a pugnacious promotions fights card, freak status?

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

Definitely. I spent many late nights at the Parting Glass, which is across the street from the newspaper I used to work at and down the street from the apartment building my wife and I used to live in (before we had even started dating). Love Saratoga. Covered my first ever pro fight at the City Center in about 1996.

Larry (New Jersey)

Is mayweather-pacquio ever gonna happen?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

If it does, Leonard will just say it never happened.

Roy (Reno)

Will ESPN show any replays of the weigh in today?

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

I dont know. I would hope so.

Charles (DFW)

How reputable is spboxing.com for their signed items? Just saw a great signed Archie Moore 8x10 for $150.

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

100%. The owner is a friend of mine who I have known for many years and done work for over the years. Highly reputable.

robb (north andover, ma)

no drinking and chatting? but what about RAD chats?

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

The one exception.

JB (Toronto)

As a collector of posters, do you prefer photo based or illustration based posters? Personally, I'll take a Leroy Neiman poster any day of the week.

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

I like a nice mix.

Jimmy (NYC)

Dan thanks for the Freaks shout out at the end of ESPN FNF!

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

Glad you noticed!

jcs (winnipeg, canada)

In the notebook you mentione Eric Morales' plans to fight again - what weight would it take place at (140?). I presume his welter days are over, or at least hope so.

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

Probably slightly over 140.

Leonard Ellerbe (Las Vegas, NV)

The Moon landing was staged.

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

YES!

Eric P (Saratoga Springs)

DAN - There is another freak in Saratoga? We need to have a slumber partay!

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

LOL!

Sean (Richmond, VA)

I know Linares is coming off a KO loss but I think he beats up Rocky Juarez. What's your prediction for this fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

Linares actually won his last fight, albeit in a struggle. It's a winnable fight for Rocky but he has always been a letdown in his important fights.

Mrs. DTM (soggy basement)

"Freak slumber party" sounds like something that should be broadcast on adult PPV.

Lucas (Danbury, CT)

Who do you like in the main event of FNF tonight? Is it a decent fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

I've always enjoyed watching Delvin Rodriguez. I had dinner with him last Friday in Bristol before FNF and he looked and sounded really ready for the fight. Theophane is a good boxer, but I think Delvin will be too physical for him.

Don (NYC)

Is Victor Ortiz going to fight Vivian Harris?

Sammy (Portland)

Whats bigger......your belly or Floyd Mayweathers ego?

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

Floyd's ego.

Joe (San Francisco, CA)

Wow, slumber party. Could give new meaning to the term "Freaks"

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

Just relax.

Eric P (Saratoga Springs)

Also regarding tonight, I'm glad Donovan George is getting some airtime. I've only seen him a couple times, he's raw and has much to learn, but brings it.

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

Yup, looking forward to seeing him again.

Brock (Illinois)

Do you expect to go to all the fights next week or will you show up later for the title fights?

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

I'll be there for the start, as always.

Joe (NJ)

Any interest from ESPN in picking up the Klitschko/Peter fight even on a tape delay? Peter is well more known by the American public and has been on several times. Plus their first fight was pretty competitive.

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

Yes, ESPN is likely to have the US rights. Most likely (not a done deal yet) the fight will be live on ESPN3.com and then air on television on tape delay.

Brad (Philly)

I don't always agree with you but I still want to thank you for the great job you do covering boxing.

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

Thanks. Would it be any fun if you always agreed with me?

Seth (San Franciso)

Dan, Will Frankie Gomez be shown on the free preview hour?

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

Yes, the plan is for Gomez and the Bika-Mendy fight to be shown.

Raul Jr. (Everett, WA)

Hey DTM, despite the whole lying or what not about the Mayweather-Pacquiao "negotiations", Richard Schaefer just made this FREAK UNDERCARD an even FREAKER UNDERCARD by getting thebBika-Mendy fight televised. Big ups to him for that!

Tito (Texas)

When is Chavez Jr. going to fight again?

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

Sept. 11 in Mexico. Opponent TBA.

mike (baltimore)

Hey Dan, question on the free preview hour, are those fights covered by Lampley and Manny as well?

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 PM)

No, it will be Col. Bob Sheridan and Dave Bontempo handling those bouts.

Bryant (Pitt)

Dan horrible sell job for saturdays PPV in your blog, rarely do remathces live up to the hype of the first fight and with Diaz already contemplating life after boxing? I saw this fight last year and had it recorded and was free and Juarez fought John replaced this time with Linares and 2 other marginal bouts and charge me 50$? Cmon brother im not buying this so i guess im not a freak, shame on Schaffer for giving this card that title

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

I wasn't selling anything. I was giving my opinion, which is what I get paid to do. If you don't like the card, no problem. Don't buy it. I could not care less.

CoryR (Fargo, ND)

Where do you go in September? LA for Mosley/Mora plus Canelo and Victor Ortiz or Vegas for JuanMa vs. Marquez. I'm going to Vegas, it's a better fight.

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

Lopez-Marquez for sure.

Tom E (Jersey City, NJ)

Great "quotable" this week, Dan. In the foul smell of the Pacquiao-Mayweather fallout, there's a lot of stink to go around. But Oscar may be the one who smells the worst.

Eric (DFW, TX)

Danimal, did Schaefer recently graduate from the Winky Wright School of Business and no one told me? I would assume coming out and calling the president of sports at HBO essentially a liar is not the greatest career move when you're a promoter. Especially when his credibility is infinitely higher than yours.

victor (north jersey)

is it me or boxing fans never satisfied..seeing how better this ppv card is over most..im still hearin complaints..casamayor is washed up..diaz has no chance blah blah..n on top of that sakio bika is fighting on the free portion of this card..shouldn't freaks be happy with this card? your thoughts

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

Boxing fans are never happy. It's a shame because life is too short.

Bache Martin (Philadelphia)

Who is the better prospect Danny Garcia or Mike Jones?

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

At this point, Jones is the more advanced guy with the bigger upside.

Lucas (Danbury, CT)

Bryant from pit is fired up like somebody stole his lunch. Settle down man!

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Dan, more frustrating to cover.....pac-mayweather or tyson-lewis negotiations?

Dan Rafael
  (2:31 PM)

Both brutal. The issue with Lewis-Tyson though never was about if a guy wanted to fight the other guy. It was a network problem, so that makes this one with Pac and Floyd a bit more frustrating because no such issue exisits here exocept for Floyd's reluctance.

Brock (Illinois)

No complaint from this guy. I am ordering the PPV and showing up next week. 2 great weeks of boxing for me.

Freak Nation (Everywhere)

Ok freaks who has the link to the Tecate Rebate Website???

John (LA)

What is the estimate on how many PPV buys?

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

I would think around 150,00-175,000.

Dan Rafael
  (2:34 PM)

OK Fight Freaks, thanks for chatting today. Hope you enjoy the big show (and a good FNF tonight). Make sure to check out the notebook and blogs and news stories from this week. I'm gonna go to the weigh in in a bit. Have a great weekend. Talk to you next week from St. Louis. Peace.
