Chat with David Newton

David Newton
  (2:02 PM)

Welcome to a Whacky Wednesday where we have learned Jack Roush has nine lives and NASCAR has secrets. So what's new?

Aaron (Erie)

If you had to pick one of these drivers that you think has the best chance of being succesful in the sport in the future: Mears, Allmendinger, Speed, Ambrose, Menard, Sadler.

David Newton
  (2:03 PM)

Several of those have had a long chance and haven't been very successful. I'll go with ... wow, tough group to choose from . . . but Allmendinger.

malcolm (chicago, il)

As far as tweaking the chase...What do you think of a different points system for drivers in the chase?

David Newton
  (2:03 PM)

I like it. Give drivers 1-12 points each week and have at it.

jesse (iowa)

what are the chances elliot sadler ends up in the #47 and marcos ambros ends up in the #19?

David Newton
  (2:04 PM)

Bobby Labonte will be in the 47. Not sure which RPM car Ambrose will be in if any, but the 9 is rumored to be the odds on favorite.

jesse (iowa)

what has been your favorite race so far in 2010 and the most boring in your eyes?

David Newton
  (2:06 PM)

Lots to choose from for most favorite because there have been a lot of good ones, or at least a lot of good finishes. Most boring might have been Indy except for the drama at the end. Or maybe it's because it's freshest in my mind. What do you think?

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who will drive the #83 Red Bull Toyota at Michigan?

David Newton
  (2:06 PM)

Sorenson is the likely choice, although that hasn't been set in stone.

David Newton
  (2:06 PM)

Sorenson is the likely choice, although that hasn't been set in stone.

Dave (Delaware)

hey dave a few questions i hope u can answer them 1 i heard menard is going to rcr as a fourth car 2 allmendinger to penske will this knock out hornish with the rumors of allgier coming from nationwide next season 3 whats the kahne situation any chance hms will transfer a driver to a hendrick related team and last 4 with dupont on the fence does gordon have a set sponsor for next season

David Newton
  (2:09 PM)

I have heard both regarding Menard and Allmendinger, but don't think either is done deal and there's a chance they could stay where they are. Allgaier needs another year in Nationwide, but Penske says he's not going to let him go. I believe Hornish will get one more year and if the AJ deal is true then they'll go with four cars. As for Kahne I still believe he'll find a way to the 5. Was told Gordon's team with Mobile I out is looking at Wal-Mart or All-State. As you see lots to be figured out.

David Newton
  (2:10 PM)

By the way, the official announcement on Labonte to 47 just camed out.

Mark (Delaware)

with next season schedule in the air can we see a road course race in the chase and maybe daytona move to the last race and over take homestead

K. Lee Davis (The Motorsports Editor)
  (2:10 PM)

Just got official release. Bonbby Labonte in the 47 at JTG Daugherty next season. Now, back to Newt ...

David Newton
  (2:11 PM)

Homestead will keep the final race. Reports that Daytona or Vegas could move into that slot are completely false. Road course in Chase would be great but haven't heard officially anything on that. Do know they are planning to move a lot of dates around.

Sears (Delaware)

hey dave big fan so any chance someone will overtake jimmie this year maybekurt kyle or denny or maybe a dark horse like bowyer or burton whats your opinion

David Newton
  (2:12 PM)

I like Burton and Gordon. Denny is the popular choice but I'm going out on a limb.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who do you think will win the U.S. Cellular 250 at Iowa & the Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono?

David Newton
  (2:14 PM)

Sorry I've been slow responding. Multi-tasking with lots going on. As for the weekend, I'll go with Kyle Busch _ duh, he wins everything _ and Juan Pablo Montoya.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Do you think that Danica Patrick will race in the AMP Energy 500 at Talledega on Halloween?

David Newton
  (2:14 PM)

Think that is on her schedule. Heard she'll come dressed as an IRL driver.

Ken (NJ)

Are the same typical drivers going to dominate Long Pond this weekend? Can we expect Hamlin, Bowyer, Burton, etc to finish towards the top or can we expect something different?

David Newton
  (2:15 PM)

The usual suspects will be up front, but I'm picking Juan. Don't count out JJ either. He usually bounces back strong from a bad weekend.

Ken (NJ)

With oval races, it can be anyones race on any given day and with road courses, we expect certain drivers to do better then others, why is Long Pond a race that is the same way with the same people doing well?

David Newton
  (2:16 PM)

It's that way at a lot of places. It just fits their driving style and they've hit on a setup that works.

Doug (Ohio)

Hey David, Bobby Labonte going to the 47 ride? Do you think this gives him a chance to get back to winning races? Why haven't better teams given Bobby a chance former champ and all?

David Newton
  (2:17 PM)

It became official a few minutes ago. As for winning, he hasn't won since 2003. They let him go at JGR because the performance just wasn't there. We'll see.

Frank (DC)

Is Labonte in the 47 a good thing for him? I was hoping he could land a ride with a top flight team.

David Newton
  (2:17 PM)

It is a good thing for him. MWR supplies them good cars and engines. May be his best shot in a while to do well.

Jim (WV)

Lost in the post Indy madness was JGRs finish 8th, 9th, 15th all with what seemed like 20th place cars. Your toughts.

David Newton
  (2:18 PM)

Don't forget the tire strategy played into that a bit. I don't read too much into it at all.

Tracy (CT)

I see Townley is back in the NW car for Rab. Is it now official what has been know for months that Townley is gone from RCR?

David Newton
  (2:18 PM)

Pretty much.

Tracy (CT)

Who do you think got the fine from NASCAR?

David Newton
  (2:19 PM)

I really hate to throw anybody under the bus without knowing for sure. It really doesn't matter to be honest, but if I had to pick I'd say Hamlin and somebody else.

Tracy (CT)

Do you think Bobby L is just keeping the seat warm for say Trevor Bayne?

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

Bayne has been strong lately. Glad to see you looking ahead as I do.

Nicholas Rolando (Orlando)

David, Ambrose to RPM then, is it a done deal? Any word on a sponsor (maybe Little Debbie)?

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

Ambrose deal not completely done, but I doubt he would have left without knowing what he was doing. You know the saying, don't leave a job unless you have another one.

Emily (NJ)

Hi, David! I think the Chase races should be run on Saturday nights to avoid competition with the NFL on Sundays. Yes, there is college football on saturday nights as well, but it won't be as bad for NASCAR trying to compete with the NFL. Your thoughts?

David Newton
  (2:21 PM)

I like that. Would like to see a Thursday night or Wednesday night special mixed in as well.

Brenda (Bloomfield Hills, MI)

Do you have any updated information on Jack's condition?

David Newton
  (2:21 PM)

Last I saw an hour ago was serious but stable.

Jenny (Elizabeth Town LA)

I would hate to see nascar go to the new chase with 15 driver 3 races and get 5 drivers out each race will they do that??? PUT THE NASCAR RACES ON ESPN 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (yes I know that you can not put the race on on espn3 but that you can tell someone that can.)

David Newton
  (2:22 PM)

Will pass the message along. And I am not in favor of gimmicking the Chase up anymore.

David Newton
  (2:22 PM)

Will pass the message along. And I am not in favor of gimmicking the Chase up anymore.

Ed (NC)

With Kasey losing the Bud sponsorship on his Cup car, any idea what he will do with his sprint teams, which are sponsored by Bud?

David Newton
  (2:23 PM)

Haven't heard, but that doesn't have to change. Kasey likes Bud a lot and they tried to work something out but just couldn't on the Cup side.

Matthew (Columbia, NJ)

Do you think the Fords are back with their strong runs at Indy?

David Newton
  (2:24 PM)

Two good races in a row, for Edwards at Chicago and Biffle in particular at Indy. It's definitely a good sign.

henry (sacramento)

who will sponser bobby labonte in the #47?

David Newton
  (2:24 PM)

Not sure yet.

Matt (Chicago)

Hey Newt, do you think the Nationwide series could survive and thrive if they limited full-time Cup drivers to, say 25 starts?

David Newton
  (2:25 PM)

Twenty-five is a lot. I think it could survive if you cut it back much more as long as you spaced them out to make sure a good number of Cup drivers are in each event.

Ryan (Ventura CA)

Any word on SHR sponsor situation?

David Newton
  (2:25 PM)

Last I was told Mobile I is under consideration.

Conner (Illinois)

Do you have any clue who NASCAR fined???

David Newton
  (2:26 PM)

Just my guesses as I said below, but as I also said who is not important. What's important is there are things that won't be tolerated no matter who you are.

Jordan (South Dakota)

Hey Mr. Newton, I was wondering why Richard Childress is listed as the owner of Furniture Row Motorsports car #78 driven by Regan Smith? That just seems a little weird to me.

David Newton
  (2:26 PM)

Never noticed that to be honest. Don't they get engines and Chassis from RCR?

Ray (CT)

My vote for Nascar tough guy of the year has to go to Jack Roush. Did you see the picture of him casually walking out of the plane covered in blood? That is the second plane accident he has walked away from.

David Newton
  (2:27 PM)

Not sure it was casually, but he's a tough dude. Can't imagine anybody walking away from two plane crashes. I was hit by a train and figured surviving that meant my odds of crashing on a plane were pretty low.

Dave (Boston)

Hey, Newt! If I was to build a cohesive winning team for the long haul taking one driver each from RCR, HMS, JGR, and RFR, I'd take JJ, Bowyer, Denny and Biffle. Who would you go with?

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

Long haul does eliminate a few drivers on each team. I'd agree with all your picks except I'd go with Edwards on RFR. Might even go with Busch from JGR.

RAYGORDONREID ( OAKMONT PA 15193)

QUESTION TO DAVID NEWTON AT 2.25 PM HI DAVID WHO YOU HAVE FOR POCONO SUNDAY

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

Juan Pablo Montoya will finish what he started at Indy.

matt (ny)

hi david, i am a huge matt kenseth fan and am hoping for a robbie reiser return to the pit box. i read on jayski.com that a source said on sirius satalite radio, that it is very likely that robbie will return to the pitbox full time next year for matt, is there any truth to this?

David Newton
  (2:30 PM)

I've been told Robbie could get back into that side of the business, but nothing definitive.

matt (ny)

hi david, who do u have for your pocono top 5? i have denny winning followed by the #42, #24,#14, and #29

David Newton
  (2:30 PM)

Only in a road course likely.

Martin (Montréal )

Hi David,Any chances to see Villeneuve in a CUP car again this year ?Thanks!

David Newton
  (2:31 PM)

The previous answer was for this...way too much multi-tasking going on here.

matt (ny)

hi david, i have gone to pocono for many years now and i was wondering if you think theyll loose a date or if there august date will be moved out of the summer

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

Not hearing they will lose a date, but I wish they would. Nothing against the area. Pretty country. But the race just isn't very good.

matt (ny)

hi david, if you could have one driver each from RCR, RFR, Hendrick, and JGR to form a super team who would you choose? id choose harvick, kenseth, Jimmie, and Kyle.

David Newton
  (2:33 PM)

Is there a trivia question for this going on...second question? Harvick, Edwards, JJ and Busch. Since the long haul isn't on this one took Harvick stead of Bowyer.

jesse (iowa)

any word on who will sponer jeff gordon and kevin harck in 2011? thanks newton

David Newton
  (2:35 PM)

Bud will be announced for Harvick in next two weeks. Gordon I am hearing has had talks with All State and perhaps Wal-Mart, but hearing Wal-Mart is more of a way to market NASCAR paraphernalia.

Jake (Irving, Texas)

Great story on ECR engines. Since they are the best at plate and power tracks like Indy but onlyl average-compared to Gibbs, Penske, Roush and HMS everywhere else could that prove to be Harvicks weakness during the chase?

David Newton
  (2:36 PM)

I wouldn't say they have been weak other places. Jeff Burton easily could have won four or five races with a little luck. McMurray was second at Darlington and Charlotte.

jesse (iowa)

whos your pick at pocono in cup? how bout trucks at at pocono? nationwide at iowa ?

David Newton
  (2:37 PM)

Hamlin, Hamlin, Busch. OK, I picked Juan earlier for the Cup race, but just wanted to say Hamlin, Hamlin and see if I'd get fined.

dz (phx, az)

hey newt, as far as r&d goes are the engines the only difference between the cup teams?

David Newton
  (2:38 PM)

They are the biggest.

dz (phx, az)

when not including the actual race what would be your favorite race city/town? and why? thanks.

David Newton
  (2:38 PM)

I love Indy. Great restaurants and places to hang out. Love staying in Ann Arbor for a Michigan race as well for the same reasons.

Chad (Illinois)

David, with Labonte taking over the 47 what kind of trickle down effect do you think we are going to see? I think Allmendinger would be better off to stay at RPM with the 9 equipment renumbered to the 43 and Menard could drive what A.J. is getting now as the 98.

David Newton
  (2:39 PM)

It'll be interesting to see. AJ to me is the key for RPM putting anything good together. If he leaves and Menard follows will be tough.

Jack (Brooklyn, NY)

David, I think it's time for Jack Roush to think about giving up his pilot's license. He's down to 7 lives now.

David Newton
  (2:40 PM)

Me, too, but Jack is a stubborn man and would never give it up.

Steve (St. Anthony, MN)

The attendance at Indy looked terrible. How long before the pull the plug on the Brickyard 400?

David Newton
  (2:41 PM)

We were discussing what the break even or let it go point was the other night. I can't believe they're far from it.

Jeremy (Port Angeles, WA)

What do you think of the blocking penalty for Helio at Edmonton?

David Newton
  (2:41 PM)

Deserved.

Nathan (Tyler, TX)

Hi David, a few weeks ago we saw a practice interview with Kurt Busch and he was wearing glasses. Does Kurt wear reading glasses only or does he need contacts to race?

David Newton
  (2:42 PM)

I missed that. I'll ask around this weekend. My guess is he wears contacts, but never have looked that deeply into his eyes.

Steve (St. Anthony, MN)

I saw that Labonte may take over the 47. Why does he keep getting chances? He has been washed up for years. Why don't they take a chance on someone?

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

Past champion's provisional and because many believe there's something still there. OK, some do.

Jeff (Georgia)

Newt, any idea what Marty Smith will tell us on Nascar Now tonight about the 5 car, Kahne and Martin? Thanks

David Newton
  (2:44 PM)

None at all.

Mark (Mount Airy, Maryland)

Hello Darlington Dave, if Ambrose signs with RPM, would you consider this a lateral move or a move up to a better team?????

David Newton
  (2:44 PM)

Lateral. Maybe a slight improvement. More money likely.

Benjamin (Spartanburg, SC)

Hey David! Barring a fuel mileage race, do you expect anyone to compete with Denny Hamlin this weekend? Also, do you think Kyle and Joey will run as well as they did in the June race? Thanks for your time.

David Newton
  (2:45 PM)

Yeah, I look for several to compete with Denny. I like Juan and JJ.

David Newton
  (2:49 PM)

Having trouble posting your questions. System is tied up. Please be patient.

Dane (Freehold, NJ)

Aric Almirola did a fantastic job in the 88 Saturday night. He seemed to enjoy working with JR Motorsports and Pops Eury. If I'm that team I lock him up for more races this season and all of next year. He's a real talent and could be part of when JR Motorsports is ready for cup - your thoughts and have you heard anything on his future?

Shawn (Gastonia, NC)

Hey David! I read somewhere that Ryan Newman had some harsh words about the handling of the Carl Edwards situation, saying the 2 probations didn't mean anything. I wonder if these words cost the Rocketman a hundred thousand quarters...

David Newton
  (2:50 PM)

Having trouble posting your questions. System is tied up. Oh, we're back up. As for Newman haven't heard anything about him being one. I don't think they'll fine for commenting on penalties and such.

Jack Trae (KCMO)

Is Dickerson the final piece to get Gordon back into victory lane? Whats your take Newt

David Newton
  (2:50 PM)

Searching for anything to help. Can't say he'll be the difference.

TG (PA)

I saw the picture of Jack Roush and wasn't expecting him to look so awful. He's very lucky to be able to walk away from that. My daughter goes to the air shows all the time and says the air traffic is the worst with planes trying to land one right after the other all day.

David Newton
  (2:51 PM)

Me either. He's a lucky man.

Ben (Atl)

Who do you expect to take over the 83 car after the Glen?

David Newton
  (2:51 PM)

Boris Said already has been announced.

Dee (Vegas)

Great article on the ECR-EGR-RCR relationship! Question on Ambrose. Is he really improving his situation? Seems to me JTG and MWR are on the rise and everyone knows the RPM situation is not good. Also, what was Daugherty mean when he said the team and Ambrose had different goals?

David Newton
  (2:51 PM)

RPM cars haven't been that bad. Think if he improves anywhere it'll be the pocketbook.

Todd (Ga)

Do you think the accident JR was involved in Sunday erased any chances of making the chase or can he put some solid runs together and make it?

David Newton
  (2:52 PM)

He's still got a chance, but that was a setback. He had a top 10 car and was headed for a good finish.

TG (PA)

Kasey will be working with Gustufson so do you think Kenny Francis will go elsewhere? How do you think he would work with Junior?

David Newton
  (2:53 PM)

Told he'll stay at RPM, but things change. As for Junior, don't think Hendrick is ready to give up on McGrew just yet.

Jason (Battlecreek, MI)

Nascar history tells us when a driver leaves Nascar due to illness or injury (Irvin, Park, Nadeua) they never make it back cause it is like starting from zero. Do you think BV will be back at RedBull in '11 or who might be Scott Speed's #2?

David Newton
  (2:54 PM)

His latest report was good. They're planning to meet in a few weeks with doctors to discuss exactly where things are. I'd say 60-40 he'll return, but I'm not a doctor.

Aida (Iowa)

Any news on Jack's condition and when he might be released from the hospital?

David Newton
  (2:54 PM)

Still in hospital. Check out the Roush Fenway website for updates.

Caster and Camber (Bahama, NC)

Whats up Newt? Was there any signs at the ECR shop that they are messing around with fuel injection? I know some people around NASCAR and was told back in June that the ECR shop hadn't begun messing with this yet. Thanks

David Newton
  (2:55 PM)

They didn't let me in the top secret rooms, but believe they have been working with fuel injection for a while whether independently or with other Chevy teams. Most have. likely won't be in the sport next year, but 2012 is realistic.

Kevin (Texas)

The first 480 miles of pocono was boring, Daytona 500, and 400 were great

David Newton
  (2:57 PM)

Agreed on 480 miles.

Greg (Richmond)

Wait, you were hit by a train?

David Newton
  (2:57 PM)

Father's Day of 1992. Now you know what's wrong with me.

Frank (Charlotte)

Who is the longest shot still remaining to make the chase?

David Newton
  (2:58 PM)

I wouldn't go any further back than Junior 93 down.

Matt Griffin (Lakeland, FL)

Hi David. Regarding the schedule, what are the chances of them moving the final bye week to the 2nd weekend of Sept., making Atlanta the Chase cut-off. Because if they are indeed taking a date away from them, the remaining date should be a meaningful one. Your thoughts?

David Newton
  (2:58 PM)

That would be cool. Would love to see Richmond move into the Chase.

Bobby (Howell)

So based on his comments Saturday night after the NW race, is Kyle Busch a) not a fan of Brad K, b) the only driver who agrees with what Carl Edwards did last weekend OR c) feeling left out of all the controversy and pulling a Kevin Harvick (stirring the pot)?

David Newton
  (3:00 PM)

Kyle did take a shot at BK didn't he? Most of the drivers seem to side with BK on this, though. Loved Harvick's comments. Maybe he was just stirring the pot, but it made good fodder.

TG (PA)

Dave, I'll bake you a pie if you tell me how to get to Junior's house!

David Newton
  (3:01 PM)

I would be fined, then tarred and feathered. Sorry I didn't get to half the questions today. Way more than the normal Wednesday. Must mean there's a lot to discuss. If you want to ask me something go to Twitter, DNewtonespn, or the comment section on the bottom of my ECR story online and I'll try to mix it up with you.
