Fantasy Sports w/Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (3:01 PM)

Hello all! Welcome to the latest fantasy sports (baseball, football) chat session. I am Eric, thanks for showing up, sending your questions, getting ready for some fun... because that's what fantasy sports should be! Anyway, lots to get to, so here goes.. .any questions?

John (Tallahassee)

What are your thoughts on Domonic Brown for this year and the future? Thanks

Eric Karabell
  (3:02 PM)

It's true, the Phillies have placed Shane Victorino on the 15-day DL with an oblique strain, and called up their top prospect. I blogged about it, and it should be posted shortly. I don't think Brown is a top-50 outfielder, however, because it sure looks like he's going to get 15 days to play. Then Victorino returns. If Werth got traded, and there was a longer-term opportunity, I would feel different. But, with 2 weeks, let's say a few home runs, but not much more.

Jeff (Chicago)

How much do you downgrade Rivers if Vincent Jackson doesn't play this year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:03 PM)

I personally did not downgrade Rivers. I can say with some confidence he'd be my 7th or 8th quarterback regardless.

T.O. (CINCY)

over/under for yds(1000) catches(70) TDS(10)

Eric Karabell
  (3:04 PM)

I blogged about this before it officially happened, while colleague Christopher Harris was able to write about it when it did happen, and more in depth. We both said, definitively, under on all three.

Last Place Fantasy Manager (Reno,Nv)

Delmon Young is playing out of his mind right now...is he a keeper in a dynasty league or sell high?

T.O. (CINCY)

hey Karabell....getcha popcorn ready...I'm going over on all three..

Eric Karabell
  (3:05 PM)

He doesn't look like someone to sell high to me. I might be as surprised as you that he's hitting for this high an average and for this power, but it's legit.

Eric Karabell
  (3:06 PM)

On the T.O. follow-up, like the Albanian said in "Taken", good luck.

Jeff (Chicago)

Your thoughts on Jermichael Finley, can he have the top fantasy season out of all the TE's?

Eric Karabell
  (3:07 PM)

Anything is possible, especially when last season's breakout tight end scored what, 13 touchdowns ... but I think putting Finley in the top 5 is pretty good. Not safe, but a 50-50 prop. We know the Packers will throw a ton.

Abraham (Scottsdale)

I dropped Jack cust and picked up Dominic brown. Ur thoughts

Eric Karabell
  (3:08 PM)

While I'm a bit down on Brown's ultimate 2010 opportunity - it's a short term thing - I don't see much harm in dropping someone like Cust. Although, Cust is hitting for power and average in July. Brown has the upside.

Scott (San Jose)

Do you think Austin Jackson is a suitable replacement for Shane Victorino?

Eric Karabell
  (3:08 PM)

Well, you'll get a better batting average and some speed, but Jackson has, as he has shown, no power. Depends on what you need. Victorino was having a really nice season.

Stephe Strasburg (On the Brink)

The Nats can't shut me down for the year because of this tight shoulder can they?

Eric Karabell
  (3:09 PM)

Wouldn't surprise me one bit. I don't expect it, but let's just say they won't take any chances with that prized right arm. They're already in last place.

john (ny)

Forte...top 10 fantasy rb this season?

Eric Karabell
  (3:09 PM)

Wouldn't surprise me if he bounces back to somewhere between his first two seasons, but I can't put him top 10 because I like at least 10 RBs better.

Phil (Madison)

Smoak or Domonic Brown in a keeper league?

Eric Karabell
  (3:11 PM)

Oh, I say Brown. A lot of the bloom is off that Smoak rose, so to speak. Moving to Seattle didn't help, but Smoak wasn't hitting in Texas, either. He's got time, of course, but I think Brown is more of a sure thing, and first base is far deeper than outfield, when one considers how many outfielders are needed for a league.

Jon (NYC)

Kubel or Ibanez for the remainder of the year? Ibanez is batting third in that lineup don't forget!

Eric Karabell
  (3:11 PM)

Yes, yes he is. But Kubel is producing more runs where he's batting. And Ibanez won't be hitting third once Utley returns.

Frank (Norwich, CT)

Why do you guys have Belisle as next in line for Rockies saves on the closer chart when everyone else is saying Corpas?

Eric Karabell
  (3:12 PM)

How do you know everyone else is right? I, for one, think it might be Betancourt. Nobody knows! Maybe Jim Tracy doesn't know either... look at Corpas' numbers.. do you like them?

Tom (MN)

Does Bay's "mild" concussion concern you? He already was struggling and we have seen what's happened to Morneau since he took his bump on the head.

Eric Karabell
  (3:13 PM)

Different situations, but what's the worry, that Bay won't hit for power? Ummm. Obviously, concussions can be serious, but I don't Bay is going to miss much time, if more than another day or two. The Mets do have four playable outfielders.

Jon (Atlanta)

I've had it with the Panda and just dropped him for Scott Rolen....Will I live to regret that in 2010?

Eric Karabell
  (3:13 PM)

I don't think Rolen is a risk, so no, that seems reasonable. But I wouldn't go dropping Sandoval in general. He's showing signs.

J (High Horse)

I said a month or two ago that Delmon Young was Nick Markakis with better upside and you scoffed at the idea asking if I really typed that. Time to give Delmon some props?

Eric Karabell
  (3:15 PM)

I don't make a habit of scoffing at the people who read and listen to our work, making this job possible. But I might not have believed Delmon would be this good. I doubt his own manager believed it! Hey, he's awesome. He's better than Markakis. If you stuck with Young, kudos to you. I've been giving him props for probably two months now. He was supposed to be this good.

Brian (NY)

Do you believe in Brett Gardner's numbers and that he can do this again in 2011? Keeper trade.

Eric Karabell
  (3:16 PM)

He's fast. He can steal even more bases in 2011 if he wants. No reason to believe the Yankees will stop him.

Tony (Erie)

Soto or Weiters?

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

This season, I have to stick with Soto unless Wieters emerges. Let's see some consistency. Soto has been very good. But for 2011 and beyond, it's not close, it's Wieters.

Angel P. (New York)

Am I legit? Should I be considered a keeper for a 12 team mixed league?

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

Yes, Angel Pagan is totally legit. Look at the steals. There's power and batting average there as well. If he sits for Francoeur regularly, someone just isn't paying attention.

Bill (NJ)

Could this mean strasburg might be around for fantasy playoffs if he has a breif shutdown period.

Eric Karabell
  (3:18 PM)

That's a very positive thought right there! Yes, totally could happen that way.

Steve (Chicago)

Your logic doesn't make sense to me, why would the Phils bring up Dom Brown for 2 weeks? If that was the case, wouldn't they just play Francisco?

Eric Karabell
  (3:19 PM)

Doesn't make sense to me, either, to be honest. I am surprised the Phillies did this. They could have played Francisco and the very capable Ross Gload in right field. But my logic makes sense because there's no way Ibanez, Victorino or Werth will be benched. And all signs point to Victorino not needing more than 15 days... but we shall see.

Brad (Philly)

I've been holding onto Jose Lopez all year hoping for a rebound. Chase Headley was recently dropped in my league. Would you make the swap?

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

Yes, I have given up on Lopez emphatically. Enough is enough already! Not that Headley is a monster, but it's an upgrade.

Aaron (Houston)

Are you a Chris Johnson believer?

Eric Karabell
  (3:21 PM)

The running back, yes. The Astros third baseman, to a degree. I think next year he could be a 20-homer guy, but not with a high average. Of course, he's currently hitting for average, and no power. Odd. Not a 10-team guy yet.

Gideon (Manhattan)

Hey EK. Time to drop Eddy Volquez? His teammate Mr. Wood is sitting out there...

Eric Karabell
  (3:21 PM)

Yes. Two bad starts for Volquez, and Travis Wood continues to shine (though he just gave up a run...)

Dave (NH)

Hi Eric. Football keeper (2) question. 6 pt/TD pass. Ray Rice no brainer. Andre Johnson or Schaub for my 2nd choice? Thanks!!

Eric Karabell
  (3:22 PM)

Easy. Andre. Always the No. 1 wide receiver as a keeper over any quarterback. Any.

Jeff (Portland, ME)

Lets talk about the miraculous Mr.Welker. First, can we legitimately expect him to return to the field in week 1? Also, does he continue to perform at his "all out" level of play? Where should he be taken in drafts?

Eric Karabell
  (3:23 PM)

I think someone is going to look at his numbers and overdraft him in most leagues... I think he will play in Week 1... but his overall numbers will drop some.

Mark (NH)

Pick an aging outfielder for the rest of this season: Beltran or Hunter

Eric Karabell
  (3:24 PM)

I would definitely take Torii Hunter over Carlos Beltran. Far safer.

Ryan (NY)

Did you really post "are you a Chris Johnson believer" as a question? You must have skimmed over "Is Albert Pujols legit" and "Is Rivera a good option for saves"

Eric Karabell
  (3:24 PM)

Read the answer, smart fella.. I assume he was asking about the rookie third baseman!

Frank (NJ)

Would you draft Bret Favre this year considering his playing issues?

Eric Karabell
  (3:25 PM)

Um, yes. I have him ranked as the No. 7 QB. I would draft him.

BK (NYC)

I have Brett Anderson stashed on my DL spot, should I activate him for Friday's game? That means I'd have to drop the aforementioned Volquez or Stubbs.

Eric Karabell
  (3:25 PM)

I would probably wait a start until you see him work, but then again, you might not want to wait any longer for Volquez. Something does seem awry with him.

JJ (Seattle)

is dominic brown a keeper?in a league with 5 keepers per team?

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

I wrote in my blog no. Not yet. Can't make the case for too many rookies - he still hasn't played yet! - as top-50 keepers. I mean, even in a keeper league that might lean to young players, I don't avoid keeping A-Rod or Pujols or Halladay.

Joe ((Staunton, VA))

I know I can't expect Vernon Davis to have another 13 TD season, but do you think he'll have numbers close to that this year or will he fall off?

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

I think we project his catches and yards to actually rise... but his TDs have to drop of course.

Scott (Boston MA)

Hey EK, you buying on either Luke Scott or Tyler Colvin?

Eric Karabell
  (3:28 PM)

Buying both. Scott has been tremendous of late, as he gets to his first 30-home run season. It's coming. As for Colvin, on pace for 27 homers as a rookie, this isn't a fluke. Doesn't everyone who hits 27 homers get owned, even in a standard league? But I would take the safer Scott first.

Mike (TN)

Are you experts ignoring my Podsednik or Torres question because it's a tossup?

Eric Karabell
  (3:29 PM)

Nah, can't say that. I don't ignore much. There are tons of questions here though. I'd take Torres over Pods, since he's the better player overall. From here on out, they probably steal a similar number of bases.

David (Philadelphia)

So continuing the Domonic Brown discussion--couldn't his call-up signal that the Phillies actually ARE going to trade Jayson Werth?

Eric Karabell
  (3:29 PM)

I suppose that could be the case. I think it's unlikely though.

Joe ((Staunton, VA))

Kevin Kolb or Jay Cutler?

Eric Karabell
  (3:30 PM)

I have the more proven Cutler ranked a bit better, but could easily make the case both are starters in 12-team leagues.

Andy (Phoenix)

Who deserves a spot on my bench more: Brandon Morrow or Logan Morrison?

Eric Karabell
  (3:31 PM)

I don't know why people aren't adding Morrow. Look at the Ks. He might get 200! Morrison probably doesn't have enough power to really help fantasy owners yet.

Brian (NY)

re: Torres/Pods-- Torres isn't hitting .300 w/ 30 steals.

Eric Karabell
  (3:32 PM)

Full season performance is just one factor... we're nearly in August! Look at recent trends too.

Jon (Syracuse)

Come playoff time is it better to dominate categories, either offense or pitching, or try to have an equal balance?

Eric Karabell
  (3:32 PM)

Always better to have balance, me thinks.

Jersse (SF)

In a dynasty league, who would you rather have: Jose Lopez or Neil Walker??

Eric Karabell
  (3:33 PM)

Ugh, probably Walker. How telling is that?

Eric (CO)

I look at Randy Moss and wonder if this is the year he starts to decline. Any case in which you would take Austin Miles over him?

Eric Karabell
  (3:33 PM)

I suppose the case can be made, but with Brady at QB, I have very few concerns about Moss losing it. He's my clear cut No. 2 WR, and I'm toying with him putting him in my top 10.

Chance (MD)

Why doesn't Cliff Pennington get more respect? Top 10 player rater SS.

Eric Karabell
  (3:35 PM)

Not on our Player Rater... but it's solely because of the steals that he's in the neighborhood. In other stats, he's not doing much. Yeah, probably should be more noticed, but if he ends up with little power and a .250 average, with 21 steals... nothing special.

Bill (Vancouver)

Thoughts on Pedro Alvarez? Do you trust him for consistent power...or would you take Gabby's AVG and moderate power the rest of the way?

Eric Karabell
  (3:36 PM)

I think Gaby Sanchez is a better option for fantasy this season. Hits for average, enough power... Alvarez still worries me some. What's he done since all those dingers against Dave Bush and the Brewers?

Dave (Boston)

Where do you see Posey for next year? Ahead of Mauer?

Eric Karabell
  (3:37 PM)

I think for now I would still make Mauer the No. 1 catcher for 2011, the thinking being he will get some of the power back when healthy, which he clearly can't be right now. But Posey is definitely top 5 catcher.

Steve (Chicago)

Werth being traded doesn't make sense, who would play CF?

Eric Karabell
  (3:37 PM)

If I was Halladay, I don't want to see Ibanez in CF... Francisco could play there.

Leo (SA)

Your recent comment about Wes Welker getting drafted too early based on last season's stats. Couldn't you say the same about Chris Johnson? I mean he isn't hurt, but his value in drafts is based on last year's stats and there is no way he performs at that level in back to back year. A case could be made that he is slightly overvalued. Correct?

Eric Karabell
  (3:38 PM)

Absolutely, that case can be made. I've seen some people opt to take Adrian Peterson over Johnson, and while I don't think I would, I see why they would.

Eric Karabell
  (3:38 PM)

And I'm calling for a Brownout - no more Dom Brown questions! - the final 20 minutes....

Chris (NY)

Which players are you winding up with in many of your football drafts?

Eric Karabell
  (3:40 PM)

Good question! Seems like Favre and Romo at QB... Grant, Forte, Barber... Dwayne Bowe at WR... but I'm switching things up a bit too. Haven't had any drafts in leagues that really matter yet, though I always draft as if they do count.

Aroma (Chicago)

Get ready for the smell 'cause I'm about to freshen up the Windy City.

Eric Karabell
  (3:41 PM)

Could be a breakout from Aromashadu... but I think it's more likely Cutler finds 3 or 4 WRs he gets 40 passes to...

JC (Oh)

Quickfire....Elvis Andrus or Starlin Castro in keeper leagues?

Eric Karabell
  (3:42 PM)

Andrus. Not sure why so many people are down on him. He's going to develop power eventually and steal 50 bases...

mary (seattle)

This just in . . . Scot Shields starting the game instead of Pinero . . . have you heard anything?????

Eric Karabell
  (3:43 PM)

Didn't think Pineiro threw hard enough to hurt himself. No, I don't know why the change. Maybe it's like the Strasburg thing from Tuesday... Pineiro has been pitching well. I doubt he's been traded.

Thor (SF)

What are your feelings about Strasburg in a keeper league? Get out now or this injury is just a blip and he will be elite? Next year, he is a top __ pitcher?

Eric Karabell
  (3:44 PM)

Strasburg will be in my top 20 pitchers... not quite top 10 though. And I don't think he's hurt. I think we all hope he's ok.

Zeus (Clouds)

Lightening round? Tommy Hunter or Josh Beckett from here out?

Eric Karabell
  (3:45 PM)

Have to say Beckett... though I am enjoying what Hunter has done. Objectively, it's tough to see it continuing long term in the hot Texas summer and that K rate.

Joe (Portland, OR)

Do you think that Capps and/or Dotel get traded?

Eric Karabell
  (3:46 PM)

Nope. I do not. Always possible though. I think the really good teams realize Dotel is like a seventh inning guy...

CJ (PA)

Kubel or Matsui?

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

I'll go Kubel. Disappointing season for Hideki Matsui. Thought he'd be a safe 20-homer guy.

Kyle (WA)

Do you think Seattle's struggles to keep healthy receivers on the field will result in a huge year for John Carlson?

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

No, not really. I think it will make a tough year for Hasselbeck though.

Antonio Bryant (Cincy)

What happened?

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

Irrelevance happened.

Kim (Philly)

thoughts on grienke?

Eric Karabell
  (3:48 PM)

Had a bad day. Should end up with an ERA around 3.50 or so, which isn't a ton higher than expected. Nobody thought he'd do 2009 over again.

Philipo (boston)

how many years does poesy play catcher before he goes to 1st base

Eric Karabell
  (3:49 PM)

He's a catcher. I'd assume he stays there for at least a decade. The first base thing only happened because they had Bengie Molina. It's not like Posey had 1B experience. I doubt Posey plays any first base in future seasons.

Chuck (NY)

Curtis Granderson hits __ HR's

Eric Karabell
  (3:50 PM)

Definitely not 30. How about 17.

Nick (PA)

I have to drop one, pick: Lidge or Dotel?

Eric Karabell
  (3:50 PM)

Can you wait until Saturday? If Dotel doesn't get traded, then ... nah, I think I'd take Lidge either way, though I wouldn't feel good about it.

Brenton (VA)

Updating earlier reports, Pineiro suffered a left oblique strain while warming up in the bullpen prior to Wednesday's scheduled start, Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald reports.

Eric Karabell
  (3:50 PM)

That stinks.. oh well, DL stint coming there.

Fitzy (MA)

Dunn? Stayin' or goin' to WhiteSox?

Eric Karabell
  (3:51 PM)

Stayin'... but it hardly matters in fantasy. He hits everywhere.

Todd(PA) [via mobile]

Romo or Brady?

Eric Karabell
  (3:52 PM)

I've got Brady 4th at QB and Romo 6th... and I should make them closer together overall. I do trust Romo.

Brian (Boston, MA)

Would you drop Street for Nolasco in a points league?

Eric Karabell
  (3:52 PM)

If I had other closers, yes. Also depends on league scoring.. .but a big K pitcher is almost always more valuable than a closer.

david (peru)

hey EK, please rank for the rest of the season: jurrjens, myers, lilly, de la rosa, bumgarner. thanks!

Eric Karabell
  (3:53 PM)

Don't we have to pick Myers now? Myers, Jurrjens, Lilly, Bumgarner and while he's showing improvement, still De La Rosa last.

Dan (Vermont)

Thoughts on this Brad Mills kid the Jays are starting today? Thanks!

Eric Karabell
  (3:54 PM)

I own Mills in a dynasty league, and haven't been real impressed with his minor league numbers this season. So I'm not optimistic about today's outing.

Brian (NY)

Any word on Justin Upton's hip?

Eric Karabell
  (3:54 PM)

Sitting today, but assume he plays Thursday.

Colby Rasmus (St. Louis)

Am I a future All-Star or the new Jose Guillen?

Eric Karabell
  (3:55 PM)

Them's fighting words! All-Star in the making...

Taylor (Ptown)

Does Joba get his 8th inning job back?

Eric Karabell
  (3:55 PM)

I wouldn't count on it.

Mike (MN )

Alexei Ramirez or Starlin Castro?

Eric Karabell
  (3:55 PM)

Alexei has more power, considerably more...

Jon (NYC)

What are your thoughts on Brett Myers? Will he continue this torrid pitching the rest of the way?

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

It's his contract year. Myers knows this. Yes, he's legit.

Stu (LA)

Pierre steals __ Bases

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

51...

JT (San Diego, CA)

Has Boesch outlived his usefulness?

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

If you can get a really good option for him, then yes. But to drop him for nothing special... wait a bit longer. I think he will change his fortunes soon.

Sandy (CT)

How long until billy butler finds a power stroke? How many homers can we expect in the future?

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

A tad disappointing in the home run department... history says big doubles guys will hit home runs. Let's hope for 25 HR next season.

david (peru)

how much does a trade to the AL affect myers or lilly in those rankings?

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

Not much. Not like Houston or Wrigley are pitching parks...

Wes (SD)

Buying in on Aubrey Huff?

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

Yes sir, we have to. What a season he's having...

Chip (NC)

Does T.O. addition affect Benson #s?

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

No. Will still get his 300 carries.

Eric Karabell
  (4:00 PM)

OK, that is about all the time we have for today. Thank you for showing up and sending questions, or for simply reading the chat wrap after the fact. We at ESPN Fantasy do appreciate it. Have a great day...
