Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (11:59 AM)

Greetings from St. Louis, Fight Freaks! I'm here for Saturday's big HBO card with Alexander-Kotelnik and Cloud-Johnson (plus Spinks-Bundrage). Good show top to bottom. Mayweather is supposed to be here as well as Tyson and Holyfield, so the circus is in town. New notebook is up, several blogs from this week as well as news stories and an updated scheduled, so let's get to it.

Mitch (Oakland)

Hey Dan. I love the bravado of predicting a two round KO, but I think it goes the distance with a lopsided win for Alexander. Is Cunningham just talking or you think he's sending Devon out with an early vengeance?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

If you know Kevin, he gets excited sometimes. I don't blame him. He's got one of the best young fighters in the world. I think he's hyping up the fight. Devon might stop Kotelnik but certainly not early like that. I expect an Alexander domination but a second-round KO would surprise me.

Steve (Minneapolis)

Liked the article this week on Glen Johnson. I watched his last fight which he looked pretty spry in for his age. What Kind of chance do you give him in this fight? I don't think him winning would be that big of an upset.

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Glen looked great in his last fight with Mack and terrible in the fight before that against Dawson. Glen is in with a younger, stronger guy. I saw Cloud at breakfast today and he looks in sick shape. He's on weight and was even having a little something to eat. Tough, tough fight for Johnson I think but Cloud to me is still not that tested. This is his test if you ask me. So while I give Johnson a shot because I have so much respect for what he's done and how he goes about his business it's hard to pick against Cloud.

David (Cape Canaveral)

Big Dan, the M/Ws are startin' to look better and better as far as young talent goes....who in your opinion looks likely to emerge as the guy at the top say in 2012? I like Lemuix.

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

I also like Lemieux and I am looking forward to seeing him headline ESPN2 on Aug. 28 in the season finale (special Saturday night slot). There are also other good up and comers - Pirog, who announced his arrival last week, Jacobs can come back, Fernando Guerrero and Shawn Estrada, if he can shake the injury bug, are also guys to watch at middle and super middle.

Will D (Cumberland, RI)

Dan, great notebook today as usual. I'm really high on Devon in terms of potential and current ability. Plus I love his and Kevin Cunningham old school mentality of always wanting to fight the best. Assuming he rolls over Kotelnik tomorrow and the fight gets signed between him and Tim Bradly. Who wins?

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

I also like Kevin's attitude. He's always been like that. He knows he has a horse, so when you have a horse you ride him and let him run hard. Devon has all the tooks to be a mega star. I know Kevin would take the Bradley fight in two seconds. HBO wants it. Bradley's promoter, Gary Shaw, has said he's interested but I get less enthusiasm from his side about the fight. I hope it happens. It's a huge fight.

Tom (Kingston Ontario)

Dan I hear the talk about Cotto and Chavez Jr. I am a big Cotto fan and even though he is on the downside of his career I don't think this is a fight Chavez wins (in fact I think it is a one sided beating). Who do you think JCCJ should fight next?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

If TR wants to make Cotto-Chavez why not? It's probably a good fight inside the ring. Cotto has no other major fight this fall sitting in front of him. I mean I'd like to see him fight Angulo or Berto but there is probably more money in a Chavez fight. So let's do it. It will be fun. Keep in mind, there is no deal yet and Chavez has a fight with Wolak on Sept. 11 first.

Jarvis (TN)

Any news on whether Roy Jones Jr will be retiring or any news on another bout for later this year or early next?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

As far as I know, Roy intends to fight again. But nothing is planned at the moment.

Trampler (LV)

Hopefully Wolak will get rid of this JR. cheeseburger

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Very unlikely.

Phil (Chicago)

Where does a Perez-Agbeko fight leave Abner Mares? He should be the one with the rematch versus Perez.

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Mares may fight Darchinyan on Showtime as part of the 4-man tourney with the winner to fight the winner of Perez-Agbeko.

Raul Jr. (Everett, WA [via Spokane, WA])

Hey DTM, is the Sept. 18th Mosley-Mora card an HBO PPV or a Golden Boy PPV? Schedule says Golden Boy but notebook says HBO. Thanks.

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Sked has been changed. It is now going to be an HBO produced PPV, according to Golden Boy's annuncement a few days ago. That means the look and feel of an HBO PPV like the Marquez-Diaz show with the HBO announcers, etc...

Barry (Newport Beach)

Dan, what is your personal view on Atlas? withdrawing Povetkin from the Klitschko fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

Teddy feels strongly about it and gave up about $200,000 for himself, so he must really believe in what he did. I can't argue with that. He's the trainer. He knows if his guy is ready.

Paul B (NY, NY)

Danimal- Can we please talk about Pirog! Wow was that a statement. I want more of him and fast.

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

I agree. I was quite impressed. He was better than the videos I had seen of him. And he was also a very personable and friendly guy outside the ring. Even speaks a little english. I want to see more of him as well. I hope HBO feels the same way.

mike (los angeles)

Floyd just pulling a floyd and running around with king just for show?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

It was all for show last time before he signed for Marquez, but who knows?

Jay (NYC)

Any update on if Paul Williams will stop running from Sergio Martinez?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

It seems like that fight isn't going to happen unless the Williams side gets in reality over the split.

Roger (Los Angeles)

Dan, does Golden Boy still have some contractual agreement with Haye? Haye seems to be taking the ?one fight every blue moon? approach that Mayweather is taking.

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

GB gets billing on all of his fights but won't really make money until and unless he fights in the United States. They are more or less his promoter in name only at the moment with very little to do on the nuts and bolts of an actual fight and promotion.

Leonard Ellerbe (Outerspace)

Paul the contracter never did any work on DTM's basement, and we all know wo is lying here.

Cristian (Jersey City)

Now that James Kirkland is out of prison, is there any word of who his first fight back will be? I'd love to see him fight Paul Williams.

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

Settle down. He's not out yet. Not until mid-Sept. Let the kid get out and get his feet on the ground and then expect to see one or two tune-up fights before he fights a living opponent.

Rick (Marina)

What do you think of the ghost guererro, Im kind of losing interest in him, he lacks excitment, he shouldve had casamayor out of there, needs to press the action some more.

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

He's a terrific talent, but I also thought he should have gotten rid of Casamayor. However, Casamayor is a veteran and Robert was way heavier than he has ever been so I can't blame him for doing what he had to do to win.

Joey (SC)

I remember Pacquiao absolutely pounding Marquez in the first round of their first fight. What do you think that a bigger, stronger, harder punching Pac would do to Marquez now. I have no interest in a third fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

You obviously don't remember rounds 3-12 when Marquez kicked his butt for the most part.

Tim (St. Louis)

What have you done in St. Louis so far?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Not much. Got here yesterday afternoon and spent much of the day writing today's notebook. I went to a local restaurant with Don King and some of his staff to watch the Devon Alexander Fox Midwest documentary on Alexander with several of the folks who produced the show. Ran into devon on my hotel floor and chatted for a minute. We're staying on the same floor it turns out. Hung out at the hotel bar with some boxing folks last night. Pretty quiet. Ran into Cloud and his team at breakfast. Went up to the top floor of the hotel and took a picture of the St. Louis arch and posted it on my facebook page for my mom to see. That's about it. Weigh in later.

robb (north andover, ma)

why not katsidis-marquez!? i figure unless marquez takes the 140 weight notably better than he did 147 he's got a losing effort against khan

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

I love JMM-Katsidis and that is actually JMM's mandatory anyway. Katsidis would love it. If JMM doesn't fight Khan (and we know he's not getting Manny) that is my next choice for Marquez.

Joey (SC)

Are you saying that you'll take Marquez in a rematch with Pac at his current weight? I'll take that bet any day of the week!

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

If they did have a rematch it would have to be around 140, which Freddie has always said Manny can make easily, because they make a big deal about how much he has to eat just to get up to welter.

David (Cape Canaveral)

Danimal, can we agree that Booth is totally mismanaging Haye...I mean this guy should be on a milk carton. Are there even any rumors of him fighting soon since he himself supposedly denounced the Harrison bout.

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Who knows. As I have always said, as a manager, Booth is a hell of a trainer.

Nick (Raleigh )

and I remember marquez getting up and dominating pacquiao

Roman (Atlanta)

Seth Mitchell keeps getting better. With him already being 28, how long until they put him up against guys like Tony Thompson, Arreoloa, etc.

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

Seth isn't ready for that yet, but I like his potential a lot. Good guy, hard worker, in great shape, has improved steadily as far I can tell and has some good power. He won't fight Thompson though. That would surprise me. They are buddies and spar together.

Migs (NYC)

Dan please resolve a bet with me and my buddy. I told him Camacho is not in the HOF and he insists he is please confirm my friend that he is clearly wrong and to pay up.

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

He may make it someday but he is not in yet because he is not yet eligible since he has continued to fight here and there and never been retired for 5 years to become eligible.

Jonathan (Atlanta)

Dan, just wanted to say I totally agreed with your blog comment about HBO not interviewing Pirog. The guy is fighting in the states for the first time and had a great K.O, it would have been nice to hear what he was thinking.

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

Agreed. And if there was some reason he couldn't be interviewed that should have been told to the TV audience.

Matt (San Diego)

Dan, I made a side wager with a friend that De la Hoya fights Chavez Jr. in 2011. Do you like my chances?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

Put it this way -- if Oscar ever does come back I have said from Day 1 that was the obvious fight.

Steve (NYC)

How bad is Curtis Stevens kicking himself after passing on FNF last week?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Nobody every accused him of being a rocket scientist.

CD (St. Paul)

Any word on what the co-feature will be on Showtime on the Marquez Lopez undercard??

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

Top Rank told me Showtime is not doing a second TV fight, which is pathetic. I hope Showtime changes its mind. Very weak call if they don't add a second fight. Top Rank (and Gary) have a million nice fights they could and ones that would not be overly costly.

Nick (Raleigh )

What's up with Andre Berto?? have you heard anything about what his next fight might be?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

Nope.

Joe (San Francisco, CA)

With HBO's less than scintillating 2nd half of the year schedule, why are they making Bradley/Alexander sit around for 7 months. Why not either have them fight in November or do a joint card with them fighting other opponents like Maidana and Judah?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

No idea. I see no reason why they should have to wait until January. Why not do it in November or December?

Tim (St. Louis)

Dan, Don King has been running promos on local radio with Andre Ward, Winky Wright, Roy Jones Jr expected to be in attendance and you touched on the Mayweather/Tyson/Holyfield rumors that King has said himself. Do you actually expect any of those guys in attendance?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

I expect many of them to be there, yes.

Rick (Marina)

What do you think of Baldomir being a Canelo's next fight, do you think they could have found a better opponent or your ok with Baldo?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

Baldy will lose every single round and maybe go the distance. Not a big fan of that fight at all.

Steve (NYC)

What is Potvekin waiting for? He ahs a gold medal and is plus 30.

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

I have no idea.

Trevor (Milwaukee)

DTM, any solid news on whether HBO does a 24/7 series for Pac/Margs? There may be less initial interest because of the Mayweather disappointment, but with all the scandalous storylines I'd say the views would be huge...

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

I believe there will be a 24/7. I think Arum will insist on it as part of the deal with HBO PPV to do the fight.

Roman (Atlanta)

Great article on Casamoyer. With his money issues, are we going to unfortunately have to see him take beatings for years to come from up and comers looking for a "name" win?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

Unfortunately, you are probably right.

Matt (San Diego)

Dan, Any word from Main Events on Zab's next opponent in October?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

Not yet. I'll check on that when I am home next week.

Scott (Raleigh)

The fact that Shannon Briggs may get a title shot is just further evidence of the sad state of the heavyweight division. Let's hope he doesn't fight like Paul Briggs if he gets in there...

Matt (San Diego)

Dan, What are your predictions for the undercard tomorrow?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

I have to go with Cloud and I will also go with Spinks to somehow pull it out.

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Breaking news from the Bat BlackBerry from somebody involved who is following along the chat: The Judah side has called inquire about Ashley Theophane facing Judah in his next fight.

JMoney (Portland)

Yo Dan don't be biting like Mike Tyson

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Promise.

Mario Mungia (Corpus Christi, TX)

Dan-O-Lakes Butter, You can put me on the list of guys who won't buy another Pacquiao or Mayweather fight until they fight eachother! But does it count if I watch it at someones house or at a bar?

David Haye (Under the Covers)

Now that they evicted Floyd's promotion from this building, where am I supposed to hide? You think Mrs. Dan the Man would mind a house guest for the rest of my Career?

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

Remember, if anyone asks you this chat never happened.

Ryan Mungia (Corpus Christi, TX)

Dan-o-mite, I read that in actuality Manny Pacquiao would be fighting for a 7th record title in 7 different weight classes as apposed to 8 as reported by many. I read something about Barrera being stripped before the Pacquiao fight? Could you explain this and in your opinion how many titles has Pacman actually won in as manny weight classes?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

Between alphabet titles and lineal titles, Manny has claimed them in seven divisions. If he beats Cheato for a vacant 154 belt that would be No. 8.

Ken (NYC)

Hi Dan, Will HBO be showing a re-broadcast of Marquez vs Diaz? Thanks

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

Somebody needs to read the notebook. The replay is on HBO Latino in Spanish tonight with another airing on HBO Latino after the Alexander-Kotelnik show.

Richie (NJ)

Michael Grant has won 8 fights in a row. Have you seen any, and how big a threat do you think he poses for Adamek? Fight prediction?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Michael can punch, so that's his shot. But I like Adamek to break him down.

Kevin (Connecticut (nowhere near Hartford))

I have some friends who are refusing to watch any boxing match until Pacquiao Mayweather happens as well. My friend Nick lives in the Bronx and I couldn't even get him to go to the Cotto fight at the stadium.

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

I don't know if you need to boycott all of boxing. That seems a bit stupid.

The City (St. Louis)

Welcome to Dan and all the freaks!!! Hope you enjoy the stay!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

So far, so good.

Mike (Florida)

Dan, What do you think of all this King/Mayweather BS? He just posted a pic of him going over a contract(sure it's fake) and getting ready to sign it.

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Part of the soap opera that is Mayweather. The guy made like $65 million last year without King, so I am not sure why you change what's not broken.

Trevor (Milwaukee)

Any chance my boy Matvey Korobov's first fight back from surgery will be televised on the Gamboa undercard next month?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

No TV. Maybe HBO will find it in its heart to show a clip of it.

Boxing Newbie (Hong Kong)

Do you recall we used to say in this chat that Don King was holding Devon back as there wasn't anything organized for Devon. Now that Devon has made it to the top, do you think Don knew what he was doing all along for not rushing him or Devon could have got there regardless.

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

No, I think DK didn't realize what he had.

Tim (St. Lou)

have to metion Valuev poop

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Duly noted.

Roman (Atlanta)

Went to see the PPV at the movie theater last week for the 1st time. Pretty cool experience, although the crowd was sparse. $25 but you get a $10 gift card. Good experience if fight fans want to try something different.

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

Everyone I have ever heard from about their experience of going to see the recent ppv in the theater has been a positive one.

Carl (WI)

Dan, can you think of a "big name" boxer who has a worse chin than Michael Grant? If so, who?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

There are plenty. Oleg Maskaev comes to mind. There are lots.

Gutterdandy (nyc)

Ironically, during the conclusion of the ESPN broadcast of Vitali vs Juan Carlos Gomez, Teddy Atlas was asked who he'd like to see fight a Klitschko brother: "Povetkin" was one of the first names he mentioned. I guess he didn't say "when" he'd like to see it.

Willie (Miami, FL)

Hey Dan, would you consider Glen Johnson a hall of famer? and if not would a dominant win this weekend at 41yrs old change that perception?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

It's possible. I'd have to look at his record closely.

Roy (Reno)

One question about the movie experience if any freak can answer, do they serve beer for the fights? I can't imagine watching a PPV with out a few beers.

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

I think it depends on the theater but I have heard from plenty of people who did and had beers at the theater.

Ochs (Webster, NY)

Enzo Maccinnerelli

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

I assume that is in reference to the terrible chin remark.

Mitch (Des Plaines, IL)

What is Golden Boy thinking putting Mora vs Mosely on PPV against the Junma vs. Marquez fight? They are obviously going hard after the mexican audience, but don't you think they would rather watch a REAL mexican in Marquez fight the Puerto Rican Junma, than watch Mexican-Americans Mora and Ortiz? Yes Canelo is on the card but is that enough to draw the Mexican fanbase away from the non PPV card?

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

Guess we'll see. I plan to be in Vegas for the better, more important fight.

Bobby (Louisville)

Shane Mosley's big talk about 'getting Pacquaio at 160" seems ridiculous. There's not any real talk or possibility of this, is there?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

That is only in Shane's mind and has little basis in reality. He mentioned that to me when we spoke last week and I was confused at first until he said it again and said he was serious.

Jeff (New Orleans)

Alexander and G. Johnson come across as two of the most humble fighters in the game, I wish them well.

Bobby (Louisville)

So, how's that awesome Antonio Tarver Heavyweight campaign going? Last time I saw Tarver in the ring (almost 2 years) ago he was shut out by Chad Dawson

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

So far it's not.

Mario (Texas)

I got a great pitch for the producers of ESPN, what about a half hour show with you on the off-season of Friday Night Fights... It can be called "Beauty and the FREAKS" where you talk about the latest in the sport of Boxing and maybe give an open forum for freaks to email or call in?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

I love it.

Khalil (Atlanta, GA)

What a downer 2010 has been. Cotto-Chavez? Ugh. Let's hope Alexander-Bradley opens 2011, followed by Pacquiao-Mayweather, Lopez-Gamboa, and Cotto-Margarito II.

mike (baltimore)

Hey Dan, any news on Perro's next fight? I know he's looking to stay active

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

There is an outstanding offer on the table for him to fight Sergio Martinez for the middleweight title but at a catch weight. We'll see if he takes it.

Eric P (Saratoga Springs)

I think Breidis Prescott-Harrison Cuello is a good late-replacement for tonight. What do you think about this?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

Does not excite me in the slightest.

DP (SD)

Dandalay Bay,Is any Top Rank fighter of note scheduled to fight anyone outside of the TR banner? These in house fights are really bad for boxing in my opinion, in most cases anyways. I know Arum isn't working with GBP, but there is still Shaw, Dibella, DK, etc.

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

I have no problem with in house fights if they make sense. Top Rank has plenty of guys they can match in house for great fights as does Golden Boy. It's when it impacts fights we all want to see then it is a different story.

Big Mike (Chicago)

Dan, I read that HBO Latino was going to replay the JMM vs Diaz fight, but its not on the guide. Can you confirm the time & day?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Check my notebook. It has the details. I don't recall the exact time.

maniroc (Cicero, IL)

Hey Dan, while I love Showtime?s idea of the bantamweight tournament, it just wouldn?t feel right without Donaire or Montiel. Plus, why prolong the tourney if the participating fighters have already fought each other before (Perez/ Mares, Perez/ Agbeko , Darchinyan/ Agbeko). I like the one and done deal.

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

Agreed. The four-man as constructed is fine, but nothing to get overly excited about. Having a tournament without two of the best three guys makes it not so special.

Bobby (Louisville)

Funny how Arum says that Marquez's win vs. Diaz doesn't earn him Pacquaio. But yet Margarito's last win was pathetic vs. Roberto Garcia! Great thinking here

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

Yup. Bob says what is good for him at any given times.

Bobby (Louisville)

Great notebook Dan! The idea of a Katsidis-Guerrero fight is Nov. 6 is AWESOME! That has the potential to be a FOTY candidate.

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

That is an excellent fight if it happens.

John (New York, NY)

What are your thoughts on Chavez Jr. - Wolak? Can the relentless Wolak outwork Chavez and pull out the victory in Mexico?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

I give Wolak almost zero chance to win.

Bobby (Louisville)

Kudos to HBO for wanting to go straight to the chase.- A January Bradley/Alexander matchup (in addition to demanding a PWill/Martinez Oct. rematch). Seems like HBO is trying to make up for the superfight damage done??

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

To quote my hero, Yoda, do or do not. There is no try.

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

Nothing at the moment. I figure he's just chillin' and listening to the song "Jump" on his IPod.

Steve (CA)

"Beauty and the Freaks" sound like a reality dating show starring you. Dan. Can I get a rose?

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

No.

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

Van Halen.

Big Bear Cepeda (Fort Pierce. FL)

Hey DTM could you comment on Larry Merchant's status? Is he done calling fights for HBO now?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

Not at all. Larry is still calling fights on WCB and PPV. It's just that HBO's schedule has been very, very light lately. He is supposed to be on the call next week in Montreal for Pascal-Dawson.

The Love Child (Dan's Basement)

This contractor is scary..

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. Go train for your fight in two weeks.

robb (north andover, ma)

obi-wan danobe, i'm not surprised to find out your hero is yoda. in the boxing world, who is yoda?

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

Rafael Mendoza.

Will D (Cumberland, RI)

Wait.... you have a Facebook page?!?! Is this for Freaks too or just family only. I see this Twitter account getting opened up very soon.

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

I do have a facebook page, but it is strictly personal. Family and friends only. NO boxing related friends at all and I am militant, so don't friend me.

Justin (Seattle)

Here are the rules for chats with Mr. Rafael:1. Read ALL notesbooks and blogs beforehand. Also, check the schedule.2. References to "The Love Child," are encouraged.3. If you have a fun/witty nickname, DTM, Danimal, Dandelay Bay, etc. feel free to use those.4. Loving the Bat Email and Bat Phones are fine, there are many like you, there is no need to be ashamed.5. Praising the virtues of Hartford or Valuev as a HOF fighter WILL get you banned.Am I missing any?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

Impressive.

Andrew (New York)

I think Bradley's people realize that Alexander is a pretty bad match up for him. He doesn't have the power to stay competitive for 12 rounds.

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

I guess we will see if Devon wins and then Bradley won't fight him.

Brock (Illinois)

When is the weigh in scheduled for?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

5 pm CT.

Koichi (NYC)

Scale of 1 to 10, how surprised would you be if Mayweather announces signing with Don King this weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

8.

rob(jersey) [via mobile]

First Pavlik, now Cotto. Is this really a possibility or just another tease. Seems too high a step up to me.

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

I don't disagree with you. I think there is more of a possibility for Cotto-Chavez though than I ever believed there was for Pavlik-Chavez.

Joe (NJ)

That was some beating on FNF. Can't remember the guys name but was he alright after the two shots after the bell.

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

Donovan George you are thinking of. He took an ass whuppin of monumental proportions and I doube he will ever be the same as a fighter. He took one shot a split second after the bell. That was not the problem. It was the 10,000 shots he took before that while his corner did nothing.

Horn (Vegas)

How shocked were you with Jacob's defeat?

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

Not overly shocked. I was surprised they took the fight in the first place. I was a little surprised about how rough of a knockout it was.

Nick (Raleigh )

Dan the Man, is it fair to say that Paul Williams is now pretty blatantly ducking Mr. Martinez?? HBO is putting up the money and the Williams side seems like they are being unreasonable. What's your opinon??

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

My opinion is they want no part of Martinez again unless they can make a deal Martinez's side would be dumb to make. They know how tough of a fight that was. But if they don't want to make it 50-50, especially when HBO has $3 million on the table (not to mention whatever there would be in tickets and sponsors) that sounds like they don't want the fight.

Horn (Vegas)

The AP releases a story of Mayweather getting sued and many people are accusing you of being behind it. So who's really hating who? I think Mayweather fans have an alliance with Bing's people.

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Who accused me? That is hilarious.

Dennis (Pittsburgh)

Any Winky Wright sightings?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Who?

Robert (Milwaukee)

DTM, I can't believe that after Theophane clearly lost last week on FNF, he would end up getting the possibility for a bigger fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

That's why boxing sucks sometimes.

A Dog (Chula Vista)

ruff fuff....ruff.....ruff ruff ruff...

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

These are my readers.

Isai (OKC)

Heard rumors about Arum courting a Pirog-Pavlik fight? Any word?

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

Arum and Artie Pelullo, Pirog's promoter, did speak about it briefly after the fight last week. Nothing more than that.

Jeff (Gilbert AZ)

D$,While at the MB hotel pool last weekend they actually closed the wave pool for a period of time because someone pooped in it....all i kept thinking was "I wonder if Valuev is here?" My wife kept asking what I was laughing about but it's hard to explain!

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

Ummm, ok.

Sal Rangel (El Paso, TX)

At first I didn't really like you lol. But after reading your blog I look forward to you writting something so I can read. I like your tell the way it is attitude and I enjoy your work. Ok now for the question. Do you think the NSAC will license Margarito to fight knowing how that fight will have a significant economic impact on Las Vegas?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

Thanks. Nevada won't hear Margarito again until his hearing in Cali is done. Margarito is the only item on the agenda for a hearing on Aug. 18 in California. We have more clarity after that meeting is over.

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

Breaking news from the Bat Email.

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

Besides announcing Chavez-Wolak, the co-feature on the Top Rank Live show will be Miguel Acosta defending his lightweight belt against Ricardo Dominguez.

Steve Mann (Winston Salem, NC)

Is maywheather ducking the landlord?

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

You know what? I think the landlord is Filipino so you might be right.

Brandon (Vegas)

Dan wouldn't actually mind seeing a Martinez-Pirog fight...they seem to have similar styles and would be a great fight

Brian (Iqaluit)

Is Max Kellerman off HBO?

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

Ummm, no. In fact, he is here in St. Louis for the show tomorrow.

Jim (Lexington, KY)

I hope the strong PPV numbers for Marquez/Diaz should convince promoters to hold more big events in the summer when the overall sports schedule is sparse at best.

Brian (DC)

If Marquez were promoted by Arum and Margarito belonged to Golden Boy, Arum would be calling Margarito a cheater who should be banned for life, and would be calling Pac-Marquez III the best fight that could be made in boxing besides Floyd-Pac. Agree?

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

10000000000000000000%.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Hey Dan, I'm sure gonna miss the road warrior when he retires. Where else can we get quotes like "We're both going to the kitchen and St Louis will get the meal" Classic.

Roman (Atlanta)

Dmitry Pirog??? More please! What's up next for this kid? and thanks for pointing out in your blog HBO's error in not interviewing him after a great win/KO.

Darren (London)

Is there anyone who isn't suing mayweather?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

I am not.

Brock (Illinois)

Is the weigh in open to the public and if so, where is it at?

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

It is and it is at May Ampitheater in Keiner Plaza.

Eric P (Saratoga Springs)

Are you going to Montreal next weekend?

Rick (Marina)

How likely is it that Marquez will fight Khan

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

It is one option.

David (Cape Canaveral)

Danimation, is Mayweather in the Lou, and if he is, and ya' see him are ya' gonna' ask him whatsup for real??

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

Of course.

John (NJ)

Dan..how does Spinks look physically? Wasn't he like 200 lbs months back?

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

I have not seen him. I will later at the weigh in.

jrfromdallas (southfork)

Is it true that when Margacheato and Pacquiao fight that Margarcheato will be driven to the ring in a cement truck?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

G$ (Bay Area)

Will we see Celestino Caballero in the ring again by the end of the year?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

There's a good possibility that if Martinez fights on HBO in October that Caballero will be in the co-feature.

John (San Fran)

Will the weigh in be shown streaming online?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

Not that I am aware of.

jrfromdallas (southfork)

Do you think Paul Williams is waiting for Jermain Taylor to come out of retirement before he announces his next fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

LOL!

Darryl (NYC)

Dan, Judah/Theophane? What are your initial thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

WC.

Matt (San Diego)

Good crowd tomorrow?

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

They say there will be. I think we'll see maybe close to 10,000.

Daniel (Wilmington,Ca)

DanTheMan, WBC up to their old tricks again. I read online that because Darchinyan wants to move up in weight that he is going to be named or already is named the champion emeritus in his current division. When I read this I started laughing and thought about how much yourself and all us freaks hate the WBC.

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Basically it is the WBC polite way of stripping him.

Matt (Naperville, IL)

Is HBO going to have any fights this fall at all? September 11th, October 2nd, Nov 6th, and Dec. 11th are the only dates I think they have right now pending and three of those don't have fights made yet.

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

HBO's fall schedule right now is a joke. But they can't make guys fight each other.

andre (dc)

over/under 100,000 buys for Mosley-Mora PPV?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Tough call. Maybe it does 100,000 because of Shane's name plus Alvarez, but it's a very tough sell with not one compelling match on the show.

John (San Fran)

WC - is that a new sanctioning body offering the diamond belt for Judah/Theophane?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

WC = Who Cares.

Rimas (Michigan)

Any update on the location of the Ward-Dirrell fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Nope. I literally just asked Gary Shaw a minute ago and he said he had no idea and to "ask Goossen."

George (Wall, NJ)

There are still a good number of Contender fans who follow Mora. Though they may not want to shell out $40.

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

$45 and more for HD.

Andrew (New York)

WBC -- Who Bloody Cares. For real, why give them the dignity of discussion? They're meaningless to my enjoyment of the sport, and detrimental to the growth of it.

G$ (Bay Area)

Considering Ward-Dirrell is bit over a month away...thats sad they cant event get a venue. Might as well put it in Oakland, as least they'll get a decent crowd again

Camacho (Yucaipa)

I loved your random thoughts this week! "I heard Pacquiao-Margarito will be sponsored by Cheatos." HAHA

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Glad you liked.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, If the "static kill" thing worked for BP in the Gulf of Mexico to stop all that crap from continuing to gush out do you think they'd let us borrow to use on the various Boxing sanctioning bodies?

Joe (On my way to Banishment)

If you weren't such a shill for the powers that be, Dan, you would be calling for the only fight anyone wants to see...Mike Tyson vs Valuev for the only truly deserving heavyweight championship in Hartford. And Floyd Mayweather is so obviosuly the greatest ever! Only a fool could miss his glory!

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

Gotta love sarcasm.

Isai (OKC)

What is your ESPN FNF fight of the year so far?

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

Escalante-Roman.

Mark (Windsor, CT)

I went to see Marquez-Diaz 2 in theaters and it was a great experience- $15 to see all of the fights in HD on a huge screen, you can't get a better deal. My question is, do you know yet if they will be showing the Mosley-Mora fight in theaters?

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

Not sure, but I would imagine they will.

Joe (NY)

Pacquiao - Margarito...where does it end up?

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

Hopefully, hell.

NYPD BLUE (Brooklyn)

David Haye now says the Klitschkos only fight stale fighters on losing streaks. That's as opposed to his fresh, winning opposition like Monte Barrett, Valuev and John Ruiz, I guess?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

Haye has lost his mind. Nothing he says means anything until he mans up.

Javier (Dayton, OH)

Valuev poop could have stopped the oil spill. Why didn't anyone think of that??

Bob Arum's middle finger (Bob Arum's right hand)

Take that Freak Nation! and that!

Will D (Cumberland, RI)

Speaking of random thoughts, you were very salty on the blog this week. I like that side of Danimal.

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

How so?

Alan (South Africa)

It would be a good idea to carry Shannon Briggs into the ring, you know to conserve energy.

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

OMG that is hilarious.

Alexandre (Montreal)

Dan, do you think HBO will listen to the fans' feedback about having a 2 man team for their broadcasts instead of 3 ? The dynamic during last week's PPV was not very good, despite Lampley's and Steward's best effort ...

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

It should be three. Makes it a way better telecast.

Julio (DFW)

Dan can you tell me a bit more about the kid from last weeks FNF Francisco Sierra? He looked like an exciting kid to watch.

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

He is, but the only previous time I had seen him that I recall was getting knocked out in the first round by Edison Miranda.

Roy (Reno)

So Berto and Williams are pricing themselves out of fights. HBO has only themselves to blame but I hope they hold their ground. They need to stop this now while there is still time left. If they don't want to accept great money for big fights, then sit on the shelf, their earning power will only decrease.

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

You are absolutely right. HBO has so radically overpaid Berto and Williams for crap fights how do you expect to get them into the ring for major fights an be able to afford it?

Dave (Rochester, NY)

dan, do you have any interest in shobox tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

Sure. I like Avalos as a prospect and I am interested in seeing Kayode.

Steve (Hartford)

How come Dawson's crowd of 6,000 in Hartford was crushed but you said Zab's crowd of 4,000 in a city twice (Newark) the size was impressive?

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

Dawson didn't draw that many and he was in a major HBO fight. Zab fought a nobody on ESPN. BIG difference.

Rick (Marina)

What is Francisco Bojado upto nowadays, I remember having high hopes for him.

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Flipping burgers?

Matt (Naperville, IL)

Maybe I missed it, but why the sudden switch in FNF main events?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

The original fight fell out.

Gil (NYC)

Floyd and Don King on 24/7 leading to the Pac fight would be interesting to say the least

Scott (MD)

Dan, I don't know why but I have always been curious about this - does Harold Lederman judge the fights in person from ringside, or does he do it from a studio watching a monitor?

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

Harold sits ringside right next to the HBO announce team and watches the fight. He also does not wear a headset in order not to listen to the commentary. When he talks to the audience, he puts the headset on.

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

OK, more Breaking News from the Bat Email with several updates for the Top Rank schedule.

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

On Sept. 4, Jorge Solis defends his 130 interm vs. TBA. And on the undercard Omar Nino defends his 108 title vs. TBA. Also, on Sept. 25, Humberto Soto won't face Urbano Antillon. Instead, he faces Fidel Monterrosa from Colombia.

Rick (Marina)

How about Angulo vs Pirog, ? Nice.

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

Interesting fight for sure.

Justin (Seattle)

To Glenn Johnson: You have surely EARNED everything you have accomplished in boxing. I cannot see any shortcuts in your careeer.

Charlie (Newport Beach)

Normally I would be critical of HBO for not airing the third title match tomorrow, but considering it?s Cory Spink who?s fighting, I?ll give them a pass.

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

Yeah, I got no problem with that.

Mayweather (Las Vegas)

What rent?

Grant (Scotland)

Dan, do you ever hear British commentators? One literally calls the shots and then an analyst [preferably Jim Watt, the best in the world] gives an ex-fighter's view. It always sounds more exciting to me.

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

I watch them all the time on the DVDs I get and on the Internet. The Sky guys are terrific.

Richard (Oxford, UK)

Hey Dan. I'm always interested to find out the purses that fighters are getting, so I was thrilled when you published the list from the NSAC from last weeks card. Any chance you could make that a regular thing?

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

I can try to get them ahead of time.

Joe (San Francisco, CA)

I knew Soto wouldn't fight Antillon. That fight is just as dangerous as a Peterson fight. What happened to Soto? He doesn't seem to want any challenges anymore.

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

They want to keep him safe for Barrera.

Ryan (Clearfield ut)

How about Cotto vs. Kermit Cintron?

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

Zero interest. Complete WC.

psycho (LaLaLand)

what happenned to Erislandy Lara?

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

Nothing. He just fought on Telefutura and will be back on ESPN later this month.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

dan, what a farce paul williams has turned out to be. 'most avoided' - yeah right. was lucky to get a decision against a very limited margarcheato, got his ass handed to him in the first quintana fight, avoided pavlik in the early negotiation stages of their proposed matchup (got that from you blog at the time about williams fearing the ghost), got slapped around by martinez and barely got the decision, was unimpressive vs. cintron for as long as it lasted and now cant get far enough away from martinez for the rematch. i have always hated hyped fighters and this is exactly why.

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

Wow. That's cold. I agree with part of that but Paul is still a very talented fighter and he did beat a prime Margarito and many had him beating Martinez, so I give him props for all of that. He also SHUT OUT Winky Wright, which is hard to do no matter how old he is. So you're a little harsh but I understand your frustration.

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

Legendary.

Will D (Cumberland, RI)

Your comment about Cheatos, ripping Ellerbe, ripping David Haye, Vicious moniker getting dropped. Maybe not salty, but just extra real this week telling it how it is. Freaks really appreciate that you pretty much dont sugar coat anything!

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

Glad you like. I am an equal opportunity offender and equal opportunity praiser.

Nick (Raleigh )

it's still over a month away but I can't wait for Lopez-Marquez...those quotes in the notebook just got me more pumped...I think marquez is gonna take him out

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

Should be an exciting fight.

Taylor (SLC, UT)

Assuming Richard Schaefer is reading this chat, I'd like him to know the reason I bought the Marquez-Diaz PPV was because of the strong card in it's TOTALITY. If he does that in the future, he's won a loyal buyer. Many thanks!

David Haye (ChickensVille)

Usian Bolt has nothing on me.

Eric P (Saratoga Springs)

Why can't Jason Litzau get a fight? What do you think he'll do next?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

Talk to his promoter, Square Ring.

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

Talk to his promoter, Square Ring.

Rick (Marina)

The Marquez-Lopez fight is at 130 or 126?

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

126, for Lopez's title. And you, Rickster, as a longtime Freak, should know better. Just check the schedule.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, I get the whole "HBO overpaid" thing......to a point. But if both Berto and P. Wlliams had signed to fight great opponents for the fall (on HBO of course) that no one would care what HBO paid as long as we, the fans, got to see some great fights?

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

Yeah, but the reason those fights are not signed is because of money. If you pay Berto $1.5 million or whatever to fight Quintana he's not going to want to make the same or less to fight Mosley. You feel me?

psycho (LaLaLand)

why no dvd of the week?

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

Didn't watch one and was busy. Traveled last week and was buried this week until leaving for The Lou.

Samantha Sanchez (Las Vegas)

Hi Dan! asking a question for my boyfriend here, are the rumors true that Sergio Martinez will be fighting Paul Williams again in Atlantic City this October? Thanks!

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

It's one option on the table.

Richard (Oxford, UK)

Dan, from your experience of interviewing fighters who hold interim or super titles, are they actually proud of holding these belts or are they slightly embarrassed that they have ZERO credibility and that fans know they mean nothing. Im thinking of guys like Katsidis, Maidana, Donaire etc..

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

Some of them know the real deal, some are in la la land. All depends on the fighter.

dylan (austin)

if we gave a chimpanzee your rolodex and a press pass, could he do your job?

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

Unlikely. For one thing, I don't think the chimp could get through airport security.

Rick (Marina)

My Bad, just wasn't sure.

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

Don't let it happen again or you will be banished.

Nick (Brooklyn, NY)

I like the idea of having Montiel-Donaire on one of the two undercards you mentioned in the notebook, it sounds more interesting to me than the main events.

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

Exactly, but I will believe it when I see it.

Bryon (Chicago)

You said in regards to the proposed bantamweight tourney "Having a tournament without two of the best three guys makes it not so special"...isn't this exactly what has happened with the Super MW tourney (without Bute)? Seems like that tourney is coming off just fine...

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

The super middles were way more loaded and Bute when it began was not considered No. 1. On top of that, the bantams have had several fights between them, making rematches not as interesting as the first-time fights in the 168 tourney. Also, I think fans in general are way more interested in watching guys at 168 bang it out than at 118.

Post this... (please.)

David Hayeweather Handbook: Ducking only the best.Foreword by Floyd Hayeweather.

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

With an afterward by Riddick Bowe.

Cole (UT)

Dan, @hboboxing posted on twitter the other day that you're thinking about getting an account, the freaks need you on twitter!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

Maybe by the end of the summer.

Alan (South Africa)

Watched Moorer- Cooper again the other day, fun fight.

Nick (Raleigh )

Dan, just wanted to say that the casamayor blog was great and give you props for writing it...you forget about how good a guy once was when you only see him diminishing as he gets older

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

Thanks. I was at some of Casamayor's major fights and I have watched his entire career. He was a HELL OF A FIGHTER when he was at his best.

Gary (Indiana)

Dan, do you think Jacobs was exposed or did Golden Boy simply underestimate how good Pirog was?

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

The second one. Daniel was moved very quickly and had basically fought 19 bums and a solid guy in Ishe Smith. He obviously needed more seasoning.

Ross Greenburg (HBO)

I would like to state for the record that there were indeed legitimate discussions between Dan and Paul the contractor

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Do you believe Bob when he says if the bantamweight tourney was single elimination he would put his guys in there?

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

No. He would find another excuse.

Jake (Arl Hts, IL)

Dan Rafael (12:05 PM)Glen looked great in his last fight with Mack and terrible in the fight before that against Dawson. Who looks good against Dawson? He made Adamek look like a bum, and many others as well.

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

Glen looked pretty damn good against Dawson in their first fight.

NYPD Blue (Brooklyn)

Even the Brits are catching on to Haye: apparently he recently went to see Dan's fave sport, soccer, in the UK somewhere and the crowd was really getting on him, with people yelling "chicken" at him and the like. You can't fool all of the people all of the time.....

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

Good.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

66 signatures and counting-- Freak Nation unite!!! http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/dan-rafael-for-commentator

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

Hilarious. You are relentless.

Dennis (Pittsburgh)

Do you see Travis Kauffman as a heavyweight prospect?

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

I don't.

Erik (atlanta, ga)

Hey just bought the new FLoyd Mayweather bobble head! It came with a Leonard Ellerbe bobble head saying Floyd was never bobbling and we all know who is lying.

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

Impressive.

Camacho (Yucaipa)

When does the next episode of Fight Camp 360 air? I miss it!

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

I don't have the exact date but there will be one before the next fights in late September.

Rick (Marina)

So will Guererro start fighting at 140? another name to the mix of quality fighters at 140.

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

He has said he will return to 135.

Bob (Boston)

Saw the Marquez fight in a theater. Only about 20 or so people there but it was awesome to see on the big screen. Hope they do it again for Mosley-Mora

Mo (VA)

Is kevin cunnigham traning cory spinks for this fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 PM)

No, they no longer work together.

Will D (Cumberland, RI)

hahaha... Mrs.DTM kicking in with the witty comments!

Rick (Marina)

Is the Baby Bull a HOFer, I wouldn't think so. He was good, just imagine if he had some ko power in his punches.

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

Doubtful.

Neal (Joliet, IL)

I think Pirog could be a star. Unlike some guys who pull off an upset, he didn't get lucky with one punch (Rahman) and he wasn't knocked down either (like Maidana vs. Ortiz) so I think it was just a star making peformance

Joe (Texas)

Do you see Devon Alexander moving up all the way to middleweight sometime in his career? He seems to have the frame to move up in weight.

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

Right now he is a force at 140 and not going anywhere. Someday, 147. Beyond that no way to know.

Dennis (Pittsburgh)

I heard Mayweather's landlord asked him for his rent and Floyd demanded a blood test or he wouldn't pay.

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

Quote of the chat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Roy (Reno)

I don't remember Dawson making Adamek look like a bum by any stretch. I actually remember a good fight.

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

I was at the fight and Dawson dominated but got dropped very hard and almost knocked out late.

Tony G. (Eureka, Ca)

"Vicious" Dan R- With the current feud between TR and GBP, which direction do you see boxing taking in the next 2 years. I love the sport to death, but this can't be good...

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

This is not good.

Jose A. (PR)

DTM, what's next for Wilfredo Vazquez Jr.?

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

His promoter, Tuto Zabala, is planning a fight for him in Kissimmee, Fla., I believe on a small PPV on Oct. 16.

Anthony (Sacramento)

Dan I would like you opinion: why did Pavlik scrap the rematch with Sergio (supposedly because he is having trouble with making 160) then insist he could make the weight for Chavez?

Dan Rafael
  (2:34 PM)

Probably because they didn't want to fight Martinez again given how hard the first one was.

Tim (St. Louis)

How do you think the Spinks/Bundrage fight will be? They are both coming off a long layoff of more than a year, I think. I think the fight may stink because of that.

Dan Rafael
  (2:35 PM)

Have no idea what to expect from that fight but I do not have high hopes. Spinks generally makes horrible fights and Bundrage ain't Mr. Excitement either. His three rounds with Yuri Foreman might be the worst three rounds I have ever seen.

Nick (Burlington, VT)

Not only did HBO not interview Pirog, they started making excuses for Jacobs! Sometimes they seem to be a little too pro-Golden Boy

Francheese (south)

Super six tourney for the heavyweight division being talked about?

Dan Rafael
  (2:36 PM)

Um no. There aren't even six heavyweights in the conversation and two of them, Ducker Haye and Povetkin, don't want to fight the Klitschkos. Get a grip please.

Jimbo (WI)

Pacquiao must be Mayweather's Landlord - oththerwise why else would "Money" run from paying his rent on his office space.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Hey Dan, I love the fight between Ponce de Leon vs Roman with the winner getting Escalante. Fight fans will get some good action fights no matter who wins. Whatcha think?

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

That is the best fight on paper on the Sept. 18 ppv.

Chris (Vancouver BC)

D$, how do you feel about the Mosely-Mora card? Looks absolutely horrible if you ask me. Why the hell is Victor Ortiz fighting Vivian Harris? I understand he got pummeled by Maidana but come on. You got to eventually challenge yourself. I wont be buying this one.

Dan Rafael
  (2:39 PM)

Seriously, I have seen dozens of comments from Freaks reflecting the same feeling on this card. If there is a Freak out there who does like the card, let me know because right now it is literally running 100 percent against this show.

Dan Rafael
  (2:39 PM)

Seriously, I have seen dozens of comments from Freaks reflecting the same feeling on this card. If there is a Freak out there who does like the card, let me know because right now it is literally running 100 percent against this show.

John (Grand Rapids, Mi)

Plus it gives Canelo an excellent chance to break his hand(s) on Baldomir's Homer Simpson like skull.

Roy (Reno)

So the Golden Boy promise of stacked cards on all PPV's sure didn't last long. Ortiz-Harris? Canelo-Baldi? I'll pass.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Are you hotel room chatting today? It would be great to get DK as a guest chatter someday.

Dan Rafael
  (2:41 PM)

Yes, I am in my room. I think DK is out doing some appearances and radio stuff promoting the fight.

Dan Rafael
  (2:41 PM)

By the way, for those of you with the sports packages on your dishes, check out the replays of the Fox Midwest docu on Devon Alexander. There a couple of replays over the next two days. It's good.

Ced (LV)

Do you think Juan Diaz is more likely to retire or continue his career?

Dan Rafael
  (2:43 PM)

I don't know. I sort of felt like he would retire, but I think he might want to at least fight once more. Don't know.

Billy (Patchogue, NY)

Those fights just aren't competitive matches. The winner has already been determined. That's the real issue here. To the untrained eye, it looks nice on paper, but they're just terrible fights. There's no reason Victor Ortiz should be fighting Vivian Harris. Get him in the ring with a live body. And I get what they're trying to do with Alvarez, but Baldomir isn't the answer here. You want him in with a former champ? Give him someone who can actually make it a competitive fight.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

My Bing bobblehead just said something really stupid, but my Dan-the-Man bobblehead put Bing in his place.

Fernando (FT Carson)

Saw you talking to Sugar Shane lat week at the weigh in anything exciting to report

Dan Rafael
  (2:46 PM)

Just catching up a little and talking about the Mora fight a bit. I've known Shane a long time, so just touching base.

Joe (Gainesville, Fla.)

It think it's disgusting how Mosley-Mora is being promoted. Every preview I saw for it last week was about Mosley never being defeated by an opponent of Mexican descent and asked if Mora could be the first. Really? This is where they want to go? Pitting races against each other? Who OK'd that angle? It's putrid.

Dan Rafael
  (2:47 PM)

It is pretty bad and shows you they are really desperate for an angle on the fight.

Paul (Austin, TX)

Dan, I went back and checked the archives. You and Jorge knew before King how good Devon was. Every week you guys would have multiple questions and answers based on Devon. This was years ago, Great work Dan!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:47 PM)

I've been pulling the Devon bandwagon from Day 1.

Gerardo (AZ)

Okay, I'll be the one: I don't hate the Sept-18 card. I'll admit no way I'd pay $50 for it, but I'll pay $15 for HD on a 12' x 21' screen to watch Canelo and Ortiz fight two names, plus I am actually mildly intrigued about Mora-Mosley. There.

Dan Rafael
  (2:48 PM)

There's one endorsement for paying $15 for it in a theater.

Adam (Newark)

You going to Montreal for Dawson - Pascal or maybe a RAD next week?

Dan Rafael
  (2:49 PM)

Probably a RAD.

Derek (edmonton, alberta)

I'm not defending the PPV at all, but I am in the minority in that I feel Mora vs Mosley is somewhat interesting. Mora is underrrated IMO, and can give Mosley problems as long as he's not too weight drained at 154. Still it's not the fight I would have chosen for SSM.

Adam (Newark)

Betcha HBO wont't be anxious to buy a Pirog - Manfredo fight the way they were planning a Jacobs - Manfredo fight for Danny's first title defense.

Dan Rafael
  (2:49 PM)

Take that to the bank.

Roy (Reno)

Dan, please ask Richard what happened to his plan to load the under cards of his PPV. The Ortiz and Canelo fights are horrible, not to mention the main event.

Reid (Cleveland, OH)

Dan-O -Any confirmation where the Dirrell-Ward fight will be? I have heard Detroit, but no specifics....

Dan Rafael
  (2:51 PM)

Nothing yet.

Romeo (DC)

Can Barack Obama mandate a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight and refer to it as a measure for the "health of the nation"?

Ryan (Clearfield ut)

What is the most a fighter has made in one fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:54 PM)

Probably Oscar against Mayweather. Oscar made around $40 millionish.

mike (baltimore)

I agree the Mosley-Mora is at least somewhat intriguing, but if you're going to put an HBO PPV card together with that as the headline, the undercard has to be STACKED

Aaron (Hartford)

Dan...do you think Pirog will dissapear to Europe for the next couple years to make title defenses or do you think there is a chance we will see him in the US ?

Dan Rafael
  (2:57 PM)

I think we'll see him in the US some since his main promoter is an American.

Ryan (Clearfield ut)

Has Harold ever judged a fight on a official card?

Dan Rafael
  (2:58 PM)

Child, Harold was an official judge for like 20 years before going to HBO. He has judged some huge fights, Ali-Norton at Yankee Stadium, for example.

Keith H (Seattle)

I'm getting a late start and just getting caught up. Justin, that's a pretty impressive list for "How to Chat". But you forgot the all important "alt-tab" to keep the boss away. Very strong in the 206.

Mayweather (Don King's House)

I'm not thinking about no rent right now, it's only been 90 days since I paid my rent. Like I said before, I just want to enjoy my life right now and continue to be Floyd Mayweather.

JB (Toronto)

I love that Lampley flat out refuses to mention any of the sanctioning bodies by name and that he somewhat mocked/chastized Steward for actually saying the letters "WBO". He calls the belts "trinkets". I love his candor. It's awesome.

Father of the Year Club (USA)

This year, we nominate Don George's father for letting his son take the beating of a lifetime. Good work sir !!

StopTalkingAboutPac/May (Everywhere)

How much is Cloud making for his annual fight? This will be his yearly income again.

Dan Rafael
  (3:00 PM)

His purse is $125,000.

Mark (Michigan)

Do you think Danny Jacobs is finished?

Dan Rafael
  (3:02 PM)

Not at all. Why? Because he lost a fight to a good fighter? Overreact much?

Dan Rafael
  (3:02 PM)

Not at all. Why? Because he lost a fight to a good fighter? Overreact much?

js (la, CA)

i am the boss. i don't need no alt-tab

Mo (VA)

How much money does Don King have?

Dan Rafael
  (3:04 PM)

As DK told me once years ago when I asked him the same question in the press room at Trinidad-Vargas: If you know how much you got, you don't got enough!!!!!!!!!

Matt (Reston, VA)

I haven't missed a televised Pacquiao fight in like 7 years but there is no way I'm buying a Margarito fight. This fight really does boxing a disservice.

Leonard Ellerbe (Floyd's office)

Manny Pacquiao never happened, how can Floyd fight someone that doesn't exist?

Mo (VA)

Did you see the final press conference for this fight? Is it just me or does don king talk too much?

Dan Rafael
  (3:08 PM)

No, I got here Thursday and the presser was Wednesday. I no longer attend pre-fight King press conferences. They are a complete waste of time.

Lucas (Danbury CT)

Haiku to Floyd - Don't run from Manny / Like the track star Usaine Bolt / Fight instead of flight

Derek (edmonton, alberta)

fantastic blog btw Dan, keep being the voice of reason on behalf of the fans...

Dan Rafael
  (3:12 PM)

That is the point of them. People make the mistake of thinking I am advocate for certain promoters or fighters. My constituency is the readers. Period.

'Freak' (Freakville)

What's the biggest hurdle in making a Ortiz-Maidana rematch, Dan?

Dan Rafael
  (3:15 PM)

Political will on behalf of Golden Boy and HBO.

Marc (Malden, MA)

I bet Mayweather likes the Mosely-Mora card, simply because it's another one in which he is NOT fighting Pacquio

Nizzi (Des Moines, IA)

You heard it here first: Victor Ortiz is the best Junior Welterweight. I don't put much stock in his loss to Maidana, he would win a rematch and would also beat Alexander and Bradley.

Dan Rafael
  (3:16 PM)

Yeah, OK, we'll just take your word for it. Smoking the pipe in the cornfields?

chris (oklahoma city)

I've been pretty broke but I was so excited about the freak card, I ordered it anyways. Thanks to the power outage from the HBO truck, I called the cable company and they saw technical difficulties on the screen when I called and I got it for free! Sick!

Dustin (Wichita, KS)

Dan, do you vote Republic or Democrat for the most part?

Dan Rafael
  (3:17 PM)

None of your business.

jrfromdallas (southfork)

I'll pay $50 for the fight if I get to get a rub down from Al Gore's masseuse after I watch it.

Dan Rafael
  (3:17 PM)

LOL!

Berndawg (CHI)

3:30pm Saturday afternoon in nowheresville Illinois, GOT was there to see Devon fight.

Dan Rafael
  (3:18 PM)

The Berndawg is right. A lot of early afternoon DK undercards watching Devon before anyone ever heard of him so I how could I miss a trip to the Lou for a big main event?

Mike S. (San Antonio)

Who is the more frustrating fighter? DLH who couldn't win the big one or Floyd who wouldn't fight the big one?

Dan Rafael
  (3:20 PM)

Defintely Floyd. Oscar fought everyone. He did the best he could and he gave the fans what they wanted. Floyd hasn't for years.

jrfromdallas (southfork)

Most shocking knockout?LinaresKhanJacobs

Dan Rafael
  (3:21 PM)

Linares.

miguel (Los Angeles)

spinks-angulo?

Dan Rafael
  (3:22 PM)

Yawwwwwwwwwwwwwwn.

G$ (Bay Area)

Can you name ONE prospect that GBP has developed into a legit contender or even strap holder? I cant think of one....

Dan Rafael
  (3:23 PM)

Mares is a legit contender at 118 and recently had a draw for a title with Perez.

Kolbe (Lancaster)

Dan, Any word on what kind of PPV #'s Marquez Diaz II did?

Dan Rafael
  (3:24 PM)

Somebody didn't read today's notebook. Banishment?

Taylor (SLC, UT)

What's a bigger load of crap, the Mosley-Mora undercard or Valuev's poop?

Dan Rafael
  (3:25 PM)

Tough one.

Banishment (The Cellar)

Did someone call for me?

Dan Rafael
  (3:27 PM)

Hi.

Mark (CT)

3:20 and counting! There's not a chatter at ESPN who could carry your jock.

Dan Rafael
  (3:27 PM)

This we know.

Nick (Harrisburg, PA)

Sum up Floyd Mayweather's career, if he were to never fight Pacquiao, right now

Dan Rafael
  (3:28 PM)

Brilliant but disappointing.

who knows (who cares)

from now on banishment is being renamed to Dan-ishment!!!

Dan Rafael
  (3:30 PM)

Nice.

Tim (St. Louis)

Any news on Benard Hopkins?

Dan Rafael
  (3:30 PM)

Nothing new. I saw him in Vegas last week at the JMM-Diaz rematch. He was chillin'.

Nizzi (Des Moines, IA)

Dan, I am beyond frustrated with Boxing. Super Middleweights are the only legit division where the best are fighting the best and that's all thanks to Showtime and the absence of Golden Boy and Top Rank. It's about time other divisions follow suit and allow the best to finally fight the best.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Let's play "Wheel of Fortune". Can you solve the puzzle? Val_ev P_op.

Dan Rafael
  (3:31 PM)

Valpev Prop!

Jose Sulaiman (WBC Headquarters)

How can I not have been mentioned in this chat yet? Do I need to start raising fee schedules? Can I interest you in a Silver belt?

Dan Rafael
  (3:31 PM)

For small sanctioning fee, of course.

Floyd's Career (On Vacation)

Could've. Would've. Should've. Didn't.

Dan Rafael
  (3:34 PM)

OK, Freaks, thanks for the chat today. I'm going to get ready for the weigh in in The Lou. Looking forward to the big show tomorrow. Enjoy the blogs and notebooks. And I will be on FNF with a report on what's up here in St. Louis. And also -- gotta give a shoutout to my sister, whose brithday is on Monday. Talk to you next week. Peace.
