Chat with Bruce Feldman

Bruce
  (2:11 PM)

Hey.. thanks for stopping by. Let's get to it. Am down in Fla still as part of my little summer CF tour.

Ricky Stanzi (Iowa City)

Will I get over my first half half woes and play complete games this year?

Bruce
  (2:12 PM)

Good question. I think you'll lead a top 15 team, but despite having a great D-line, my hunch is Wisconsin and OSU will be the top two in the Big Ten this fall.

Donald (Eugene)

Back in 2001, Oregon was almost universally mocked for the Joey Harrington poster in Times Square. Now with the PAC10 having a media day in the Big Apple, were the Ducks just ahead of their time?

Bruce
  (2:13 PM)

Yep, great point. That move was very shrewd. Oregon has done a fantastic job of branding their program. Winning more obviously has helped a lot too.

Cory (Boise)

Bruce, Boise is ranked too low. They should be higher than Florida and Texas. I would put them at 2

Bruce
  (2:13 PM)

I actually would've had Boise a few spots lower. I am picking VT to beat them in the opener.

Steve (Valdosta, Georgia)

Do the Georgia Bulldogs exceed expectations this year? I remember that you were very high on Murray when he was coming out.

Bruce
  (2:15 PM)

I am a believer than he'll bcome a very good college QB and his Oline should be strong this year... Expectations seem to be all over the map with them. I'd set an onver/under on wins for them at 8.5. And if I had to pick one side of it, I'd go with the over there.

Ben (Oregon)

When are we people going to stop underestimating Oregon St? And when are they going to learn to stop scheduling such ridiculous nonconference games?

Bruce
  (2:17 PM)

Oregon State has the track record now. Last year was big for them on that front. Now can they take the next step, not just being a "good" team but an "outstanding" one? And to do that they must start the season strong as opposed to what we've seen the past few years from them early.

Adam (Pittsburgh)

How are WVU and Pitt, seemingly equal in talent, so far apart in the rankings? they are realtively equal at RB, QB, LB. pitt has an edge at WR and DL. wvu has an edge at OL and DB. Does it really just come down to the voters having more faith in the stache than stew?

Bruce
  (2:18 PM)

Good question. I feel like the edge in the Pitt front seven was sizeable and that with the Pitt WRs it should enable to QB to be better so that's connected.

Jaquay Charlotte, NC [via mobile]

What is the over/under on 20 points per game given up by the FSU defense this year?

Bruce
  (2:21 PM)

Over.. I think they'll be better but they gave up 30 last year. That'd be a huge improvement. How about 24 ppg?

adam (fort myers, fl)

how did the canes practice look??

Bruce
  (2:23 PM)

You can't read a ton into a first day of practice. They are very big though. Big, towering O-linemen. Huge WRs. Allen Bailey. This is the best UM has looked in probably 7-8 years. Tommy Streeter, a 6-6, 210 WR who runs 4.40, was impressive yesterday and I heard he was even better today. If their O-line jells quickly and Jacory Harris stays healthy, they're going to be a top 5 kind of team.

Jason (State College)

There have been alot of stories on JoePa recently. Who do you think should be the next Penn State head coach? When that will be might be a harder question.

Bruce
  (2:24 PM)

Tough to replace a legend. I'd say keep in it house with DC Tom Bradley.

Chris (DC)

Is there any way that Bama can possible run their schedule this season undefeated? Playing 6 teams coming off of bye-weeks? There's no way, right?

Bruce
  (2:25 PM)

Anything's possible. They have a ton of talent and experienced leadership on the team and with Saban.

Steven (Blacksburg)

Texas, Ohio State, and VT all go undefeated. Who gets left out of the NC?

Bruce
  (2:26 PM)

Depends on whether VT and Oregon State then go 12-1 and 11-1. If not close to that I think it'll be Texas and OSU. The rest of the WAC is too soft.

Casey (Hilliard, Ohio)

If you were Jim Tressel, could you name a former Michigan player captain of Ohio State? It could happen, BTW.

Bruce
  (2:26 PM)

Sure. He wanted to come to OSU and has worked hard to commit to the program. That'd be good enough for me if he does everything his coaches ask and has the respect of his teammates.

Steven (Blacksburg)

Bruce, you misread my question! I asked what if Texas, Ohio State, and VT go undefeated who gets left out. Not Boise!

Bruce
  (2:28 PM)

Oh, that's a tougher question. Sorry. There are more if's with this one. My hunch is Texas' schedule might not seem as strong as the other two, but let's see how good OU and the rest of the top of the Big 12 prove to be.

Ryan (Baton Rouge)

Who are you taking in the LSU/UNC game?

Bruce
  (2:28 PM)

I was leaning to UNC till all of the agent rumors swirled now I'm leaning to LSU.

Bruce (Columbus, GA)

What will Seanrel Henderson's impact on the Miami team be this year? Will he be a major factor to lift Miami to this year's expectations?

Bruce
  (2:36 PM)

He has a chance to be a factor later in the season. I wrote about him today in my blog. He's going to be worked into the mix slowly. He went for about 30 minutes in Day 1 before they wanted to bring him inside. Today, he was out there for the entire practice and looked good I heard.

Bruce
  (2:37 PM)

At this point they have two expereinced starters who'll be at the tackles, Orlando Franklin and Joel Figueroa with two big young tackles behind they who they're excited about, Jermaine Johnson and Ben Jones. Henderson will need to get himself in shape first and learn the system before he can try and push his way up the two-deep.

Bruce
  (2:38 PM)

Sorry for the lag.. Had to to a quick TV hit for College Football Live.

Blake (Abilene, TX)

Bruce, no one ever bows what the future holds but as of now the 2015 Texas vs Notre Dame game at South Bend looks huge? Your thoughts?

Bruce
  (2:39 PM)

Love it! ND should be stronger by then. Two proud programs..huge fan bases... it's a great thing for college football.

Ariana (Bradenton)

I keep hearing that Ohio States D line is going to get to Jacory all day. Do you think Miami will be ready for that and find ways to get the ball to the playmakers. They have many? Or will it be a long day for the Canes. Thanks

Bruce
  (2:40 PM)

That's the #1 question with that match-up. The big thing Miami does have to get ready for that is I'm not sure any team is deeper up front that they are. Allen Bailey is a monster DE, so it's not like that O-line won't get tested before that in camp.

Michael Hook em texas [via mobile]

As a longhorn fan who should I fear more this year oklahoma or Nebraska

Bruce
  (2:41 PM)

I have more faith in Landry Jones than NU's QB play so I'll say Fear the Stoops.

Arthur (Chapel Hill)

Hey Bruce, love your chats! If UNC goes 2-0 to start the season against LSU and GT, do you see that getting them into the top 10 and the conversation for the ACC championship?

Bruce
  (2:42 PM)

Thanks...Yeah, those would be two big wins and would show that UNC has handled the summer distractions well.

Ryan (Canton, MI)

Bruce, after reading your blog today, just curious what difference you see between what happened at Michigan and what happened at West Virginia, if you see a difference. Thanks.

Bruce
  (2:45 PM)

I think it's all the same kind of thing, which honestly from the coaches I've spoken to over the past few years, is a lot like what happens at most other big schools around the country. To me a "major" scandal would be an academic scandal or some player or their family getting paid. Not because a video GA sat and watched some film with the coaching staff, which is a rule that has been changed since.

randall oc,ca [via mobile]

i hear dillon baxter is lighting it up at sc...next great san diego rb???

Bruce
  (2:46 PM)

I was really impressed by him in the spring. He's really shifty and has that great vision. That said, I don't want to say he's going to achieve what a Marcus Allen did.

Ben Miller (Menifee, CA)

Bruce, is Chip Kelly the best offensive coach in college football? It's hard to argue with what he has done the past 3 years.

Bruce
  (2:47 PM)

He's certainly in the discussion. He has done wonders for them ever since he arrived from UNH.

sweatervested1 (space)

With public demand so high for college football, do you ever run out of ideas of things to write about?

Bruce
  (2:48 PM)

Nope. I used to think it'd be hard to write about college football 365 but there's always angles you can explore and this year it there was always something going on.

curt (trappe md)

Will fridge pull a winning season or will this be his last at Maryland?

Bruce
  (2:49 PM)

I really like the guy and think he's done a good job there, but I think he won't get them to a bowl and this will be it.

Kevin (Nashville)

Thoughts on Mike Stoops at FSU?

Bruce
  (2:50 PM)

On Mark Stoops? He's well respected. The coaches I know who have been on staffs with him think highly of him. He was a good hire. Then again, Hudson, the new LB coach, could've been a good DC hire too.

Daniel, Pasadena [via mobile]

How does the deepest conference(Pac 10) get only 2 teams ranked in the top 25?

Bruce
  (2:51 PM)

I think because there are a few teams that people kinda like but don't love (Stanford and Washington).. plus you have USC's situation with the poll. In my ESPN poll, I had USC in the top 15.

thomas (los angeles)

bruce, looks like we'll finally get to see allen bradford get 20 carries per game. what do you expect the result to be?

Bruce
  (2:53 PM)

He'd be a 1200-yard back then.. I think the Kennedy Pola hire was good for Bradford. The styles mesh.

Timmy (Steubenville)

Two questions. How much time per week do you spend studying college football? It's just amazing to me you can answer all these rapid fire questions about every given team. Also, what do you think were the biggest reasons for the failure of the Charlie Weis regime?

Bruce
  (2:55 PM)

If it was "studying" I'd fail.. I really love the sport. It's pretty much what I focus on all day... AS for Weis, the biggest thing is he had no experience as a college coach and none as a head coach. The developing talent side of things wasn't there. From the people I spoke to at Notre Dame for the Magazine story I just did the place felt too much like it was an NFL operation and a job, and it can't feel like a job Kelly says.

Sammy (Columbus)

True or FalseL if Ohio State returned 21 starters from a top 5 team, the would be almost- consensus #1s and certainly not drop a spot between the end of last year and now?

Bruce
  (2:57 PM)

I'll say False. I think in OSU's case, there is a still a benefit of the doubt factor that is missing with them. People like them but they don't want to go out on that limb THAT far because there had been too many big game flops in the past five years.

Pete (West Lafayette)

Can Robert Marve lead the Boilers to a bowl game?

Bruce
  (2:57 PM)

Yes. Man, did Danny Hope rave about Robert Marve. I'm not sure he'll lead them into the top 25 this year, but I think they should be able to get seven wins.

john (lawrence)

What's your stance on preseason polls? Harmless and fun or foolish exercises that put some teams behind the 8 ball?

Bruce
  (2:59 PM)

Should be harmless and fun and voters should be ready to shake things up in the first six weeks and keep it fluid based on results not expectations that are proven to be flawed.

Blake (Abilene, TX)

Bruce, do these chats eber help in deciding what your readers are interested in?

Bruce
  (3:00 PM)

Hmmm. They probably shouldn't because I can get one person send the same question from 15 different names. (I don't have time to check IP addresses so I'm only looking at what gets posted).

Seth A (Chicago)

In the last ten years, Iowa has beaten LSU, Florida (should have been twice if not for the worst officiated game in BCS history), South Carolina, Georgia Tech, and lost to Texas by 2 in a great game. Can Ohio St. or Wisconsin match that bowl record?

Bruce
  (3:01 PM)

Iowa's been very impressive in bowl games of late, but I'm not sure where you're going with this in regards to OSU and Wisky.

Josh (Lincoln, NE)

If I were Garret Gilbert, I'd fear Nebraska's defense a lot more. Ask Colt.

Bruce
  (3:01 PM)

Luckily for Gilbert Mr. Suh left for the NFL with Colt.

john (lawrence)

Who deemed the Pac-10 the deepest conference?

Bruce
  (3:02 PM)

Another chatter. I don't agree with it this year. I think the Pac-10 often is underrated, but not the deepest this year.

Steve (Blacksburg, VA)

Are you going to be at the Labor Day opener (VT/Boise)?

Bruce
  (3:03 PM)

I think so.. Still trying to figure out the opening weekend.

Mike (San Diego)

Will the bruins be in the top or bottom half of the pac-10 at seasons end?

Bruce
  (3:03 PM)

Somewhere between 4-6 I think and they'll finish with seven or eight wins.

Vinnie (ATL)

Do you like Indy as a permanent site for the Big 10 championship game? Go to Soldier Field or Lambeau! Play in the elements!

Bruce
  (3:04 PM)

No, I love the idea of Lambeau, and if the hotels issue is too much to get around, play at Soldier Field. The Big Ten should be playing outside. No domes! It's not in their DNA.

Mike (LA)

Do you buy into the idea that Kevin Prince will be better than Matt Barkley this year? Rick N is selling it pretty hard

Bruce
  (3:05 PM)

I don't, but I am curious to see how Prince does in the Pistol. He's a good athlete, but needs one of the young RBs to really emerge.

Louis (NJ)

Where do you rank NJ as a recruiting state? Is it Top Ten or is theyre still much more talent down south and out west.

Bruce
  (3:07 PM)

They'd be around 10 somewhere behind Fla, TX, Calif, Ga, OH, PA, LA and in the next cluster... About five years ago NJ produced as many elite players into the NFL draft as anyone. The coaching there is outstanding. This is a blog top 10 I need to revisit this year.

Arijan (Chicago)

If BSU beats VT on labor day are you gonna be one of those people who says VT is overrated rather than giving props to Boise?

Bruce
  (3:08 PM)

No, I'll give props to Boise if they come across the country and beat VT.

Ken (CA)

Bruce - have you been keeping up witih the house of pain articles? how does the Lindsay Scott run against the Gators in 1980 not even rate in the top 50?

Bruce
  (3:08 PM)

Blame Schlabach.

Patrick (South Bend)

Read on a competitor's site that ND's predicted to go 8-4 with a readers comments suggesting 6-6. After watching the spring game this ND alumnus thinks they'll surprise people. Any predictions? (And you hit the Weis question on the head. He also never played football.)

Bruce
  (3:09 PM)

I'll go 9-3. Dayne Crist should be a breakout star.. He's got everything an elite college QB needs and two great receivers.

Steve (Ann Arbor)

Please tell me Syracuse has a chance at a bowl this year...pretty please?

Bruce
  (3:11 PM)

Loooong. Long shot, but they have a good coach in there who will build them back up in the next 2-3 years. You gotta be patient.

Bruce
  (3:11 PM)

Three more questions...

Vinnie (ATL)

What did you think of Rainey's comments at FL?

Bruce
  (3:14 PM)

I think given some of the quotes attributed to him dating back to his HS days, if I were Urban Meyer, I'd probably not let him have a Twitter account.

Ken (CA)

If the polls were harmless fun, wouldn't Auburn have been in the 2004 BCS championship?

Bruce
  (3:16 PM)

I'm not saying voters don't get sucked in to the backwards logic of "well, they were slotted here in August so I need to maintain some sequence of structure ..." and it mucks the process up. I'm just saying people shouldn't approach it that way.

Steve (Blacksburg, VA)

What kind of a game do you see between VT and Boise St. ?

Bruce
  (3:18 PM)

Typical physical Tech kind of game. I think Bud Foster will have some answers for Boise's shifts and window-dressing stuff, but there will be some times when the Boise WRs give Tech problems. Those guys are underrated.

Bruce
  (3:19 PM)

Thanks for all of the questions. If I didn't get to yours, send it to me via Twitter at BFeldmanESPN. Have a great weekend.
