Chat with Bill WIlliamson

Bill Williamson
  (2:01 PM)

Hi everyone, let's get rolling. By the way, our chats during training camp are 30 minute affaris.

Brenton (State College, PA)

Hey Bill, how's it goin? I know it looks like Denver is going to be a popular suitor for Aaron Schoebel, but do you think the Raiders might take a stab at him for some extra security on the D-Line? They look pretty solid on paper this year but they could always use some more help. What do you think?

Bill Williamson
  (2:03 PM)

Even tough Dumervil is out, Oakland is the only real fit for Schobel in the AFC West. He's a 4-3 player and he didn't want to play for the Bills because they are moving to the 3-4. Oakland is the only 4-3 team in the division. Yet, I think Schobel may have other ideas. I think he wants to go to Houston, his hometown.

BayArea Charger (San Francisco )

Shouldn't the chargers sign McNeill and trade Jackson already? Now that Gates is locked up, this seems like the next logical step!

Bill Williamson
  (2:03 PM)

A lot of people in San Diego feel the same way. It could happen.

brendan (san diego, CA)

Do you think even if Vincent Jackson holds out that the chargers still have a shot to win the whole thing?

Bill Williamson
  (2:04 PM)

I like their chances better with VJ than without him, but after seeing Floyd, Naanee and Davis this week, the Chargers are in solid shape at WR.

Trevor (Fort Collins, CO)

With the AFC West being pretty wide open as far as the projected division winner goes; I see San Diego as the favorite but, with the Raiders making good moves and looking pretty good in preseason form and with Denver now losing Dumervil, who do you see taking the division in 2010?

Bill Williamson
  (2:05 PM)

Still, San Diego. Remember, San Diego won 13 games last year and Oakland won five. Is the gap really going to close by eight games?

Owen (NY(NY))

Word is McClain was yelling at the rooks like a 10 year vet - how much better will this lb crew be this year (with other additions - Groves, Wimbley, ...)

Bill Williamson
  (2:06 PM)

McClain is a stud, plan and simple. He is going to be very good. As ar Wimbley and Grovers, they are just guys. Focus on MccLain.

Devin (Oceanside Ca)

Donald Butler out for the season? Really think Applewhite can make a difference this season. I liked him as an AZTEC but hasnt shown anything as a Charger. Think English can step his game up too?

Bill Williamson
  (2:07 PM)

English looks better and the Chargers really like Applewhite.

Paul (Esconido, CA)

With AJ Smith not giving in to Shawne Merriman's demands of a no trade clause, when do you see him reporting to camp? Also, what's your prediction on Marcus McNeil and Vincent Jackson situations?

Bill Williamson
  (2:09 PM)

I think Merriman has to come in soon, doesn't he. What other choice does he have.I think Jackson will stay out for the long haul. McNeill, just a guess, may come in at some point. Again, just a feeling on my part.

Jeremy (jacksonville, nc)

While they haven't been serious, the Raiders WR's have suffered some bumps and bruises to say the least at training camp. The lack of depth and experience is a little unnerving for me. Now that T.O. is in the Nati, who would be the best available FA WR should the Raiders need to sign somebody?

Bill Williamson
  (2:12 PM)

Javon Walker anyone?

Bill Williamson
  (2:12 PM)

Javon Walker anyone?

Jeff (NC)

Does the Butler injury throw a wrench into the SD defensive plans for the year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:12 PM)

It hurts special teams moe.

Paul (CA)

First game of the season, how many carries do Bush and McFadden each get?

Bill Williamson
  (2:13 PM)

Don't think we can answer than one until we see a couple of preseason games.

Cameron (Rye,NH)

Hey Bill is it a good thing the Chargers got rid of LT

Bill Williamson
  (2:14 PM)

Well, they coulnd't live with that lack of production again. So, yes. He's a legend, but his time, sadly, has passed.

SprungOnSports (Long Island)

How will Denver cope with Dumervil's loss both on their defense and financially? What can they do at this point?

Bill Williamson
  (2:15 PM)

I have a post coming out in five minutes on possible options. Here's a hint: It ain't a great list.

Indy Charger fan (Indy)

So Bill, looking like SD is going to take two from DEN this year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:15 PM)

That may be able to be said in Oakland and K.C., as well.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

How much will Elvis Dumerville's torn pectoral muscle affect the Denver season??

Bill Williamson
  (2:17 PM)

You can't see it, but my arms are stretched as far as possible (and I sport a pretty decent little wing span).

DJ Mbenga (Golden State)

If Schilens, Murphy, and McFadden can stay healthy, how much better do you think this Raiders offense can be in 2010? Between the 15th and 20th ranked offense in the league? If they can move the chains and keep the defense off the field I think this team has a shot at the division.

Bill Williamson
  (2:17 PM)

Yes, if Campbell makes strides and the offensive line really coming on.

Dan (Philadelphia)

Is it crazy to think that the Chargers could be in trouble this year? Lose LT, replace him with a rookie. McNeil is gone. VJax is gone. Merriman is unhappy. Are we quick to hand them the AFC West title or is the division just THAT bad?

Bill Williamson
  (2:19 PM)

There is great change in SD and there are some questions. But this should still be a 10-win team. No other AFC West team can say that right now.

Tom (NC)

I'm still confused as to why the Raiders didn't go after a veteran WR this year, if no other reason than to provide some leadership to the youngsters. Is this the Raiders way of saying that they believe all of the passing failures belong solely on Jamarcus (and somewhat the OL)?

Bill Williamson
  (2:21 PM)

I would have liked to see Oakland get a WR as well.

Jeremy (jacksonville, nc)

Bill, what are your thoughts on the Raiders Defense? I am very optimistic that this will be a much improved unit. With a d-line of Shaughnessy, Seymour, Kelly, and Houston with Henderson, Bryant, and Richardson coming off the bench and Scott and Groves playing a little rush end I think that this may have become one of the Raiders strongest groups and possibly one of the best line rotations in the league.

Bill Williamson
  (2:21 PM)

It has a chance to be better, but a lot of youngsters have to develop quickly.

Brian (Rockledge, PA)

With the loss of Elvis "Doom" Dumerveil for about 4 months as Schefter says, what do the Broncos LB core look like?

Bill Williamson
  (2:23 PM)

There isn't much pass rush there. Ayers or even Moss must come through very quickly.

VassagoPrime (Bogart, GA)

Hi Bill, Thanks for all you do.I hate to say it, but SD is the team to beat.Who is Most Likely to succeed - In the win column? Da Raaaaaiders, chiefs or the Broncos?

Bill Williamson
  (2:23 PM)

Probably Raiders, maybe Chiefs.

Michael (Greenville, SC)

You think Tebow is worth the hype?

Bill Williamson
  (2:24 PM)

Is anybody?

EricBerryForPrez (KC)

Odds Chiefs go better than .500

Bill Williamson
  (2:24 PM)

35 percent.

Mike (Bay Area)

Hey Bill I have a question that is never really talked about. How will Rolondo McClain's career be effected because of crohn's disease? Will he not be able to have as long of a career?

Bill Williamson
  (2:24 PM)

He said he got it in the 9th grade and he has been fine.

Henry (Oakland)

Which AFC West rookie has looked the best in minicamp?

Bill Williamson
  (2:25 PM)

McClain and Houston have been impressive early.

steveO (rochester)

hay-ya bill, what do you think the chances are if brodie croyel has a awsome pre season and cassell is so-so croyel gets a chance to start? word is croyel has looked very sharp in camp? danka

Bill Williamson
  (2:26 PM)

I just don't see it unless Cassel really stinks in the regular season.

Tyler (NYC)

Bill, have you had a chance to see Ryan Matthews in camp? How does he look so far? What are you initial impressions of how he'll do this season?

Bill Williamson
  (2:27 PM)

I saw him this week. He is a strong runner. Very tough. The team is raving about his vision and patience. Sounds like he could be very good.

Nic (Gresham, OR)

How much of Ryan Mathews do we see in the first preseason game?

Bill Williamson
  (2:28 PM)

Probably a series with the rest of the starters.

Lester (Los Angeles, CA)

Do you think either Raider rookie lineman will make into the starting line up this year ?

Bill Williamson
  (2:28 PM)

Veldheer and Campbell? Maybe, but I don't think they will be big factors for a while.

curt (trappe md)

Will Dwayne Bowe get out of the dog house this year, and how can a coach for a team as bad as the cheifs leave one of his best players on the bench?

Bill Williamson
  (2:29 PM)

This is a big, big year for Bowe in K.C. He has to make it work.

Brendan (San Diego, CA)

Who do you think starts if McNeil continues to hold out, Thomas or Dombrowski?

Bill Williamson
  (2:30 PM)

Dombrowksi has looked good. Thomas is going to miss two weeks with a knee injury. It will likely be Dombrowski's job.

Bill Williamson
  (2:31 PM)

Great session, folks. Talk to you next week. I will be on our Training Camp Chatter Live event later today for 10 minutes.
