What is shakin' everyone? Let's get this party started.
Have you been able to personally substantiate the stories that Ziggy Hood is looking good at Latrobe? I still think that Ra'shon Harris is a 'sleeper' that might be a diamond in the rough.
I do like Harris as a potential stout run stopper who could hold the point. Maybe help in a rotation. I see the Steelers' DL being MUCH better than many tend to give them credit for right now-which is a huge reason I think they will have the very best D in the league this year. As for Ziggy, I have read the same things and people have told me the same, but have not seen it with my own eyes.
Hey,Matt. How do you think the Rams will do this year? They are very young and talented in my eyes.
Not sure how talented they are. I see a very long year again. There are steps being made, but that D is still pretty awful and a lot of early faith in Bradford. 3-13
Matt, is he or isn't he? You know who I'm talking about. What are your sources telling you?
No sources telling me anything, but I bet #4 plays in 2010.
Do Vikings ride it out with Rosenfields and Jackson or do they go after someone like Brady Quin no that Favre is gone?
Certainly would not go after Quinn. He's junk. Would consider Troy Smith or Tyler Thigpen though. I like both of them more than Rosenfels for sure and maybe more than Jackson.
Pick one: R. Bush, J. Best, C. Portis, J. Addai
Best by far.
Do you see the Cardinals committing more the the Run this year?
For sure. They have to. Can't trust the guy delivering the football. But, Zona has prepared for this day. I like their RBs quite a bit and the OL has slowly moved to a heavy power run blocking group. And R Grimm is excellent in this capacity. Still, I don't like the talent up front that Grimm has to work with. Wells could have a big year though.
Will B. Marshall get 90+ catches in the Fish offense?
I think I would set the O/U right around 85 catches. Orton relied on Marshall. But so did Cutler. He is an extremely attractive target to throw to. I don't see that changing. 100 catches might be a little high in this O, but Parcells and company didn't give up draft picks and gobs of money to use him as a decoy. They are going to throw his way plenty. Henne will love him.
are the green bay packers the favorite in the nfc north if 4 stays retired?
Yes. For certain. Was going to pick them in the North even with Favre in Minny. Now, it just got much easier. Not sure that I will pick the Vikes to make the playoffs now.
I chuckle at everyone on Jahvid Best's bandwagon. He was brittle in the Pac-10! No way he holds up.
"Brittle" might be a little extreme. Reminds me a lot of MJD.
Is it just me, or does the Lion's offense actually look pretty sexy? Matt Stafford definitely did better than average when healthy last year. What are your thoughts Matt?
Sexy wouldn't be my adjective, but I am on board as well. The OL is improved with Sims and Cherilus should be one year improved. Big believer in Stafford, Best and esp Calvin J here. Real solid nucleus. More versatility than ever with the two TEs.
MJD? Best reminds me alot of Felix Jones (also brittle) on his best day.
Jones is much bigger though. I suppose they play with a similar style, but of the three, Best has the least power. Still, he will add more muscle over the next year or two. Jones is weighing in around 220ish now a days.
Is Shawne Merriman done, or can he put up double digit sacks now that he's two years removed from his knee injury?
I lean towards the former. Injuries and lack of banned substances have really brought his career to a halt.
Favre is coming back, you know this was just a ploy to get more money than Sam Bradford!
I think he comes back too. Doubt money is the motivator though. A bad ankle? That guy has played through MUCH worse. He's a machine. Just doesn't want to sweat through the early portions of training camp. So be it.
Here's the Best comparison that was eluding me -- Jerious Norwood. Norwood is very talented but can't stay on the field and is therefore of little value.
Nah. Norwood looks like a WR. Isn't that compact RB build that bounces off tacklers. Norwood is more of a long strider too. No where near the quickness. Keep em coming.
You look like a different man in your new pic.
Not any better looking mind you, but that first one was awfully rough. My wife and fam used to bring it up all the time that I needed to get it changed.
Yo get any input on the Madden Player ratings?
Nope...couldn't care less. Sonic the Hedgehog was the last video game I played. Maybe Pac Man. Or Kaboom.
Hey Matt, Fantasy question. You think I should trade Ronnie Brown and Bengals D/ST for Ryan Mathews and Cowboys D/ST? Which end of this deal is better?
You should do it in a heartbeat. I slightly prefer Dallas' D to Cincys, but who really cares there. Would rank Mathews WAY ahead of Brown. Talk about brittle.
I agree that money might not be the issue, but he does have an ego, and coming back after a career year and making the same amount as a rookie, would not do much for his ego.
I am sure he has a massive ego. Maybe. Who knows. But the guy isn't hurting for bucks. And he made a fortune last season.
Ronnie Brown is about as injury prone as Najeh Davenport. Will Jermichael Finley finish the year as the best receiving TE in the league?
Yes and Yes
Aaron Rodgers wins the mvp
Not a bad pick. I know it is incredibly boring but that guy who wears #18 in Indy is a pretty decent pick too.
Who will be the Redskins #2 WR? Is it Devin Thomas' to lose?
I really feel like Shanny is looking to light a fire under Thomas and Kelly. Galloway with the 1s? Come on. Actually, I still think V Jax ends up in Washington. Purely a hunch, but that is just such a typical Skins move-although he might not be old enough for their tastes.
Is Donald Driver done? While on the subject of old WR, is this the year we see a big drop off from Wayne and Mason?
I forecast that this is the year that we see a big drop off in all three of those WRs you mentioned.
Does Minny look at Russell now that Farve is retiring? Well at least appears to be retiring.
Can't see them doing anything hasty. I mentioned two guys who would interest me. You can have Russell though.
Okay, you said that Vincent Jackson ends up in Washington. What do the Chargers get for him?
Something more or less equal to a 2nd rounder. Maybe a guy like D Thomas thrown in.
How can you say that about Wayne Matt? He is still in the prime of his career. I see at least 2 more years of good production. Driver and Mason I can see. I wouldnt want Russell on my team. But I can see Minny trying. My team is set with Sanchez.
Maybe 2 or 3 years of good production, but a decline in play none the less. Showed signs late last year. Your trust in Sanchez is your weakness Young Skywalker.
Underrated Band: Yes
M-Dub, J. Russell to the Vikes? Who's making that up? Yeah, let's put him in an offense where precision matters.
What O does he fit? LOL. Would have to be a big time downfield O with a ridiculous running game. Actually, who knows, with the right organization (not Oakland) and a very patient group working with him...then maybe, maybe he resurfaces.
Not sure if you've heard this, but Thomas Jones is starting ahead of JC. Does Todd Haley hate his young star, who already is a top 5-7 RB.
I have some questions about Haley as a HC, but no way does that stand. Charles is a big time player. Will rise to the top. Weiss will love the guy.
How many games can the Browns expect to win with the QB situation? I used to like Delhomme, but he looks like he lost a bunch off his fastball.
He has always been a risk taker and yes, his once acceptable physical abilities have declined. But his decision making is just horrendous. Have said it all off season. I think the Browns have the worst passing game in the league. Buff could certainly compete for that title too.
my sleeper pick for MVP Patrick Willis , he is gonna ruin Bradfords career
Love it as a DMVP pick and almost certainly will be my selection for that honor. As for ruining people's careers...relax there Champ.
Any news on the Aaron Schobel situation in Buffalo? I heard today that they might release him. How do you think he would look in a Texans jersey?
Great fit. Pure 4-3 guy. Houston could use him in a rotation with Smith and Barwin. Move Smith inside on passing downs. I like it.
Ryan Mathews hasn't taken a snap in the NFL, not even in a preseason game. NFL.com ranks him 8th among running backs with over 1450 yards from scrimmage and 13 rushing/receiving TDs. Now, I'm a Chargers fan, but that seems a little outlandish to me. Do you think he gets all of that?
Would certainly go UNDER. But I think Norv wants to run the ball quite a bit and Mathews is a very good fit for his O. Will McNeal be there at LT? But-very easy schedule for the run. I like Mathews a lot, but I could come up with 8 RBs I like better for FF.
Thoughts on the Moreno injury? Is this something that will linger all season?
Writing something on it right now that will be up on Friday. Who knows if it will linger, but it will cost him very valuable reps before the season. He needs to play better.
You should have kept your Steeler fan-boy tendencies to yourself. It affects your credibility. They you go and say something foolish like the Steelers may have the best D in the league this year. Are you high?
Completely and utterly impartial. Yes, I grew up and live in Pittsburgh. But if I lived in Wichita Kansas (or god forbid Cleveland) I would say the exact same thing. I think they are loaded on D with 43 and 91 coming back, Hood growing up and Timmons continuing his ascent. Plus, they are extremely well coached and much deeper at CB.
If the Chargers tried to deal V-Jax for a defensive player instead of draft picks, what safety could they get for him?
Is Safety that big of a need? I like Weddle an awful lot. They just drafted a SS type. Who is on the market? I do think this D needs another Pro Bowl caliber play maker in a very bad way-don't see one right now.
Now I just got an alert that #4 will play if healthy. Okay, let's all just talk about this every minute of every waking day until opening day. So annoying.
You get ripped for some ridiculous things. I got your back if you need help making people see this is strictly an opinion.
It is a little crazy. Should read some of the comments at the bottom of my articles. Not sure what some people's motivation is. But hey-maybe it shows that I am making something of myself in this business. Will always say what I think and see.
Maybe no pro-bowlers, but Weddle, Stuckey, Siler, and Cam Thomas may be a very solid foundation after this year.
Perhaps. Weddle for sure. I do like Siler too. But mid round picks are unlikely to be "Foundation" guys. I like Jammer too. But wow, this D scares me.
Are people sleeping on the Bears?
Could be. That D will be better. If T Harris plays like he is capable-it will be much better. They will also score points. Have said for a while that they were my dark horse team. Don't love the OL, but we shall see. Also-as I have always said-Cutler can be my QB anytime.
What about Aaron Schobel in ATL? I still worry about our DE position. Should the Bills just release him? Can't they get something for him?
I like that fit too. Can't say I am in love with Abraham any more. Still good, but not a stud. I do like Beirmann. One more guy (like Schobel) would be quite welcome.
Is Fred Jackson the best back in Toronto? oops... I mean Buffalo?
Yes. Does it all well, but not real flashy. Real solid tough player. Not the youngest guy though. Curious how long he lasts.
Slow down Matt! Your telling me Cleveland still has professional sports teams? Where was I for this?
I couldn't help myself. Had to post it. I am such a homer.
M-Dub, how do you think the NYG secondary fares with Fewell at the helm, considering a lot of their CBs are better in man-to-man as opposed to zone (Webster, Ross)?
I still think the CB is very strong, although that is a good point. With Rolle, the safety position has to be improved-it was horrendous. Rolle is a little overrated, but still a massive upgrade. But, this pass rush might make any back end problems much smaller. I have faith in those DEs to rattle QBs.
The Giants are pretty strong
Green Bay had an awful O-Line last year, they still won some games...
Sure did. It was only awful during the first half of the year though. I actually like that line now. A lot of possibilities for the now and going forward.
M-Dub looking at Buffalo it's more than likely they'll have the first pick in next years draft. If you were the GM where would you start to rebuild this team which has so many needs.
First off, I really don't understand why they went to a 3-4. But anyways, it has to be QB. Assuming all these guys wash out in 2010, you need to find a stud prospect with a rifle arm to cut those elements. LT is next on the list. Then WR.
any thoughts on the colts acquiring deshea townsend? i feel that despite his age he has been very solid (and underappreciated) player in the league for a long time.
True, but he really struggled last season. Was never the biggest, strongest or fastest. Relied on technique and smarts more than most starting CBs. Now, what he had has left him some. But worth a July/August signing for sure.
The Chargers defense will be better than you are giving them credit for. Also, Vjax is gonna get more than a 2nd rounder if Marshall got 2
But Santonio Holmes only got a 5th-he was facing suspension/contract year. It has been a buyers market for vets this off season. He hasn't helped his stock since the last games were played. Teams don't get excited about trading for players who are facing suspension. Plus, one more screw up off the field and he really will get hit hard with games missed.
But I love the player. I prefer Marshall, but they are very different. Jackson is exception downfield.
Does Pat White have a future, or is he going to be a bust?
Seems so brittle and skinny for WR-even for a Wild Cat QB type. And I don't like how he throws the ball. Returner? Doubtful. Bust.
Eric Wood is my new favorite player after screaming at his teammate, Maybin, to "give back some of that money you haven't earned." Classic.
First I heard that...but yes, Classic. 3-4 might help Maybin. Might.
Since Gonzo and Bob are both back and (knock on a tree-full of wood) healthy, shouldn't the Colts be better today than they were last year?
Again, SO boring. But I am picking them to win the whole thing. Those are two good reasons why. #18 is a tremendous reason why.
Jake, that is a myth. It was the OT position that killed the Packers early. Wells and Sitton had very good year.
Those two were very solid, as was Clifton and Tauscher once they returned. Plus, I think Rodgers learned to get it out a little faster. Not quite a myth-the line as a whole didn't play well early on in protection, but a good point.
Really, Matt, you're not on the Ravens bandwagon like seemingly ever other media member in the globe? I'm impressed!
I was. Was big time. But now-I just can't trust the secondary.
Underrated comeback player of the year -- Harry Douglas. He was electric for ATL two years ago. He will be dynamite in the slot with Roddy and Gonzalez flanking.
Don't disagree with that. Ryan should love a guy like that. Quick hitters. Not the biggest/strongest/most physical guy around though-hopefully he can handle the pounding at this level. Obviously he is yet to prove that.
Hey Matt, Raiders 8-8 this year? and does Zach Miller make the pro bowl this year?
Miller might go, but no way is Oakland .500. 5-11.
Raven nation just breathed a sigh of relief that you're no longer picking us to win the whole thing. Now, if we can just get Mike Greenberg to do the same thing, we might just have a chance...
Wow, you stuck it to me on that one. Keep em coming. And keep your day job-stand up isn't your calling.
On Paper the 49er's should win the NFC West but a protected Matt Hasselbeck will have something to say about that. Seahawks win the West.
I don't agree at all. Where do the big plays come from in Seattle? Big fan of Forsett (& Leon if healthy), but don't trust Hass and have a lot of worries about the D, esp the pass rush. Steps are being made, but give me the Niners.
Isn't it hard to evaluate high draft picks in pre-season games when they're going against undrafted players who might be inferior to the guys they faced in college?
In a way, plus they are still very much learning from a mental perspective, but overall, I do think the preseason is a terrific eval tool. Rookies/High picks included. The speed and physicality of the game is still like nothing they have ever seen.
Better division; AFC North or East? I can see either division having two Wild Card teams.
Buff and Clev cancel each other out more or less, but still, give me Clev. Okay, I will rank them 8 to 1. 8. Buff 7. Clev 6. Jets (let the arrows fly) 5. Miami 4. Cincy 3. NEng 2. PGH (homer, right?) 1. Balt....but of course, those best six are very tough to call right now.
Assuming you can't select a QB, who would be your first pick to start a franchise?
Joe Thomas was the first name to come to mind. Revis?
Can Brian Orakpo become the face of the Skins D the way that Ware is for the Dallas D? He seems to be the real deal to me.
He is very much the real deal and the 3-4 will be tremendous for him. But Ware's level? Can't say Yes to that. Just a notch below.
If the raiders aren't the 2nd best team in the AFC west, which team is? Granted 5-11 might be 2nd best in that divison.
Should I care that Fat Albert can't run 300 yards? All I want is for him to occupy two offensive lineman every play. He can do that in two yards max.
I wouldn't worry about it all. Put the pads on. Play the game. He can really play the game.
With Sparano at the helm the dolphins are looking like a top contender this with marshal right, you see the dolphins making a playoff push?
Like them for sure-esp on O. Still think they are a little light on D. Writing something about their DL for Friday too after the Merling injury.
VJax to the Bears for Tommie Harris (3-4 DE possible?) and maybe Aromoshadu (?) and a 5th rounder.
Great player, but not a great fit in Martz's O. Not a Bruce/Holt/Hester/Knox type of route runner. Plus, Harris doesn't fit the 3-4 at all.
Is Josh McDaniels destroying the Broncos franchise?
I tend to think Yes. Okay, I am out. Let's do it again next week for sure. Fun stuff as always.
