Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (11:59 AM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to our weekly chat. New notebook is up, schedule is updated, there are news stories from the week and two blogs with a third one -- the weekly random thoughts -- about to be posted. And remember Freaks, I am now on Twitter so please follow me @danrafaelespn. So we have a big fight this weekend with Pascal-Dawson and heavyweight Cris Arreola on FNF tonight and a very good Top Rank Live card with Kim-Vazquez, so let's get to it!

Garth (Stamford, CT)

Welcome to Twitter Dan! You seem to be enjoying it and have caught on very quickly how to use it. You tweet regularly and have been giving us real-time news and updates. We look forward to you posting pics as well especially while at fights. Keep up the good work.

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 PM)

I gotta figure out the photo thing, but when I do, I'll do that. Count on it.

Chris (Overland Park, KS)

Dan, I read in the St. Louis Dispatch that Alexander made 2 million last week. ESPN article said $500k which was it

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 PM)

Nowhere near $2 million. That report was simply WRONG.

Harold Lederman (New York)

?What a goddam chat this is gonna be!!!!!!!!?

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

That was a legendary quote.

George (Fontana,CA)

Im equally excited to see todays fights. ESPN2, Solo Boxeo, and Telemundo. The ESPN2 cards seems very interesting.

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

Lots of fights tonight!

Manny (Riverisde,CA)

what a shocker, Areola weighs in the 3rd heaviest of his career. he needs to stop saying hes from riverside. hes a disgrace to the sport and our city! it really shows how dedicated he got to the sport now... haha! your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

I have not seen how he is carrying the weight yet, so I'll reserve comment.

Steve (Sac,Ca)

Dano, I must say it is freakin sweet you are now on Twitter, keep it up buddy

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

Glad you are enjoying. It kept me busy in the St. Louis airport on Sunday when my flight was canceled and I had nothing to do for like 5 hours.

John H (Augusta GA)

Dan, thank you so much for signing up for twitter. Last Saturday was the first time I had to work the night shift at work and I was bummed to be missing the fights but low and behold there you were posting the tweets. I almost fell out of my chair when you said K9 got the KO. It seems that all of the guys in the final four of the 1st season of the contender have been emerging lately. Has anything ever been said about Alfonso Gomez ? Or is this a WC matter?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Bundrage looked very good in the fight, partly because he was in sensational shape and partly because Spinks was totally shot. Nothing going on specifically with Gomez at the moment that I am aware of.

Ze technician (California)

What the real reason behind El Perro turning down Martinez?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

He's not smart.

Jose (Miami, FL.)

ANY NEWS WHEN OLDANIER SOLIS WILL FIGHT AGAIN?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Breaking news baby! Solis will be on Top Rank Live against TBA on Oct. 9.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

75 signatures and counting-- Freak Nation UNITE! http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/dan-rafael-for-commentator

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

You are insane!

Bert (Minneapolis)

Nice move calling out Angulo! That' could be like a rookie pitcher turning down a 5 year contract, and then blowing out his arm!

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

DTM, after watching Glen Johnson take some of those punches from Cloud last week, I was reminded how ridiculous of a chin he has? Do you think theres any current guys out there who have as good/better a chin than the old man?

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

Glen has an awesome chin. I don't think he has ever been down. And the one stoppage loss was on his feet against Hopkins in the mid-90s. I saw him at the airport on Sunday and chatted with him for a bit. He didn't have a mark on him. Amazing.

ram (elizabeth, nj)

dan, i think harold lederman was off on his scoring from last week fight (alexander-kotelnik).

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

I had it 115-113 for Alexander so while Harold is usually dead on, he was a little off last week, but he still had the right winner.

Jorge (East Los Angeles)

Dan, That's 2 fights in a row that I haven't been to fond of Devon's defense. The important thing is he got another W. What's your initial thought of a Bradley/Alexander fight. Btw, grerat work on twitter.

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

I love the Bradley-Alexander fight. I would give Bradley the very slight edge, but it's a toss up. Alexander is faster I think and I also think he has a better chin, but Bradley has overall beaten the better guys. I think whoever wins is the No. 1 guy in the division and the loser, if he fights well, will emerge bigger as well.

jcs (Winnipeg, Canada)

Hey Dan, Have you been to Montreal for a fight yet? best city in Canada by a long shot.

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Never been for a fight, but have been there many times just to go. I grew up only about three hours from there, so I have visited several times, although not in many years.

JL (San Diego)

I see the Notebook and the blog on Angulo. Where's the random thoughts article?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Should be posted shortly. I turned it in this morning.

Rick (Marina)

Whats up , Dan, looking forward to FNF, but I cant beleive Angulo turned down the fight with Martinez. Has he been spending time with winky?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Maybe they should fight each other.

Mark (WI)

It was cool to meet you at Marquez V Diaz and to see you're one of the only writers to show up on time! Any news on the Pirog front?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

I always get there for the start! Nothing on Pirog specifically. He's probably enjoying his victory and taking a little time off.

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

By the Freaks -- There WILL be a RAD chat tomorrow night after the Pascal-Dawson fight.

darryl p (indianapolis)

hey dan wanted to give a shout out to jay larkin rest in peace

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Definitely. Jay was a good man and a friend. I had known he was sick for a long time and I am glad I picked up the phone to call him just to say hello about 6 weeks ago.

Luke (Alderaan)

Any news on Vitali Klitschko's next opponent?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Still looks like Briggs.

rob(jersey) [via mobile]

DTM! Vic/Mares and Yhonny/agbeko2 on the same card. Sign me up! Wish that had the feel of an east-coast card personally.

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Good card for sure.

Danny (England)

Dan, with all this stuff going on with Don King and Floyd, if they were to get together when do you think is the earliest the Floyd - Pac fight can happen?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Probably next spring.

Pancho (Los Mochis)

Whats up with my man Humberto Soto ducking good fighters - first Peterson and now Antillon - why?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Who knows. He's been overly protected by Top Rank and Beltran.

Chris (Overland Park, KS)

I used to read your chats in the evenings on Friday. Then I realized I do nothing at work on Friday so I should join in live.

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Took ya long enough.

Dwight (paris TX)

Were is Winky Wright?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Who?

darryl p (indianapolis)

will u be at the mosley vs mora fight sept 18

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

No, my plan is to go to Lopez-Marquez.

Mrs. DTM (following you on Twitter)

Hey, freaks, I bet DTM that he would have 2,000 followers by tonight -- can you make that happen? Follow him at http://twitter.com/danrafaelespn

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

You heard Mrs. D$.

Brock (Illinois)

Dandalay Bay, do you have some place to be today or should I go ahead and predict your chat TKO of BHop at 3:45?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

We shall see.

Ced (LV)

What kind of performance do you expect out of Chad tomorrow night? The usual cautious approach (some would say boring)? Or do you think he might try to establish his dominance a little bit and put on a show?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

Chad was pretty animated when I talked to him yesterday. I think he wants to stick his jab in Pascal's face and use it as a weapon. He sounded surprised to see how much taller and longer he was than Pascal, so if he feels he can control him physically, maybe he will step on the pedal at least a little and go for the KO if he has him where he wants him.

Brent (Toronto)

I hear that Lemiuex's opponent for the FNF finale is Marcos Avenando - who?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

If you read my Twitter you'd know Lemieux was injured and is out of the fight. I also updated the notebook.

robb (north andover, ma)

obi-wan danobe, i need help. best friends 22nd bday is tomorrow, but so is pascal/dawson and a rad! what do i do!?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

Watch the fight with you buddy and then join the chat!

Ruben (Houston)

Happy Danday the 13th! Any word on what kind of numbers the Marquez/Diaz card did?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

more than 150,000, maybe as much as 200,000. I reported that in last week's notebook.

Scott (Bloomington,MN)

Hey Dan, This trend of guys not taking big fights is getting riduculous. Money skipping on Pac, Povetkin skipping on Klitschko, and everyone skipping out on Martinez(Williams, Angulo, Pavlik). Have you ever seen a period of time when fighters continually turn down big payday's? I thought that is why they worked so hard in their careers, to get to big money title fights. What am I missing?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

It's ridiculous.

Choco (New Jersey)

Dan, any word on Mike Alvarado's bail violation - any word on how long he will be behind bars?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

Alvarado is an idiot. He's on ice probably until early next year.

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

Hey Dan, wanna meet me in Detroit for the Black Keys concert tomorrow night? I have an extra ticket. Thank you DVR.

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

No.

Danny (England)

Anything new with Roy Jones?

darryl p (indianapolis)

can u really see mayweather signing with don king?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Put it this way -- I think courtship is more serious than the one before the Marquez fight.

Ced (LV)

Will Caballero get a fight the remainder of this year?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Somebody needs to read today's notebook. Come on, who's got the chat rules.

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

great notebook today, its refreshing to read about a fighter, dawson, who is openly seeking out the best opponents instead of caring about his undefeated record, titles, or any other garbage. i was talking with a friend the other day and we were thinking that dawson has a shot to rule the light heavy division for years to come, even when the 168 guys move up, your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

I agree with you 100 percent. He may not be the most exciting fighter, but you know what? He never ducks anyone and fights the best guys. He's fighting on the road. He usually wins fairly easily, the first Johnson fight notwithstanding. Think about it -- he beat Adamek EASILY (other than a late knockdown) and now Adamek is a top heavyweight.

Derek (edmonton, alberta)

Dan, how in the world could you have possibly scored that fight in Alexander's favor? Alexander was missing most of his punches or hitting Kotelnik's gloves. Kotelnik rocked Alexander all night with effective clean punches and was robbed.

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

I sat 5 feet from the ring and scored it like the official judges and many others at ringside. He dictated the pace of the fight, threw way more punches, landed more punches and had better defense. What can I say? I scored it like I saw it.

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

OK Freaks, the new blog is up: http://espn.go.com/sports/boxing/blog/_/name/rafael_dan/id/5461234/shocked-green-ward-postponed

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

I just Tweeted during the chat!

Mike (Gilbert, Az )

Dan, I like Dawson tomorrow, TKO 11th Rd

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

I can see it. I also like Dawson to win it.

Brandon (Houston)

Actually, Kotelnik landed more punches than Alexander. 23 to be exact, while throwing about 250 less.

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

I stand corrected, but you get my point. 23 punches on CompuBox, which is a guide, not an exact science, is basically the same when you figure that is on average 2 more punches per round. Not exactly a huge deal at all.

Ced (LV)

My bad. OK then. Do you think HBO will put that triple header on? Any potential holdups?

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

The tripleheader is what the promoters want. HBO has not agreed and they have not gotten down to money, which is going to be a big issue have run the numbers in my mind as to what I believe the approx. cost will be for the fights they have in mind.

psycho (LaLaLand)

how much of a better state would boxing be if they cared about ABC belts in the way Chad Dawson does?

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Much.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

Dan, while I agree that Alexander won the fighty, were you surprised at how easily Kotelnik was able to land punches on him?

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

I was a little surprised Devon's defense was not as tight as it has usually been.

Chris (London)

Been enjoying your tweets, any editorial control from Espn on your tweets?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

No, I just follow the basic rules ESPN has laid out for all of its folks who tweet.

psycho (LaLaLand)

Chat Rules: Read the notebook, blogs and schedules to avoid asking silly questions and banishment. 2. Boxing vs MMA questions are considered your demise. Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali were great boxers but dont dare asking the outcome had they fought together. 4. Dan is no shill for Top Rank, Golden Boy or anyone and he definetely doesnt hate Floyd. He reports things the way they are. Period!!! What do you think Dan??

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

Not bad. Not bad at all.

Drew (Akron)

DTM, I don't want to sound like a hater... but shoudn't HBO be embarrassed about attaching its name to the Mosley/Mora PPV?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

I can't disagree.

Erik (Huntsville, Alabama)

Dan, regardless of how people scored the fight for Alexander-Kotelnik, I think Alexander would be well served to work on head movement and stop his bad habits of backing straight out if he fights Bradley because he was lacking in both of those areas last saturday. Your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Agreed.

Aaron (Hartford)

the tweets on the boxing home page of ESPN are great dan...keep it up...

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Thanks.

Kevin (Chandler, AZ)

Slight edit needed for the blog. The fight is Dirrell-Ward that may get postponed. Headline reads Green-Ward.

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

You are right. Just a mistake that is being corrected.

Roy (Reno)

Collazo said yesterday he is not fighting Drz. Is that a ploy for more money? What is really going on?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Who knows? I was skeptical from the moment I heard Collazo mentioned because he doesn't really fight anymore and has always thought he was worth way more than he is. So I doubt Collazo will be fighting him.

Cristian (Jersey City)

After Pascal, who would be the biggest challenge for Dawson at 168 or 175?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

If Dawson wins, I'd of course like to see him fight Cloud or Bute. The rest of the top super middles are unavailable for the time being until the Super Six is over, but someday him and Ward or Dirrell could be a big fight.

JJD (Seattle)

Are we going to get into the argument about scoring AGAIN? If fighter A wins seven rounds by 1% and fighter B wins the other five rounds by 20%, you would have the impression that Fighter B won, but Fighter A would get the decision. It's not the whole fight that is scored it is round-by-round.

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

We're not going to argue. You are 100 percent right.

Horn (Vegas)

What a great call for Cunningham to drop Spinks knowing his former fighter was not taking his career seriously.

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

You're right. Cory had nothing and Kevin is no dummy.

Paul B (NY, NY)

What is your pediction on the Kim-Vazquez scrap? I am actually pretty psyched for that one.

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

I think it's a war. I'm going to go with Kim.

@BANISHMENT [via mobile]

I should be on Twitter too.

Bert (Norco, CA)

Between Twitter, Random Thoughts, Misc. Blogs, News Breaks, The Notebook, Chats, RAD and traveling cross-country for fights... Do you ever sleep man?!?!?! It's well appreciated and keep up the good HARD work that you do!

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

I slept for four hours in the middle of the day last Sunday when I got home from St. Louis. When I woke up wife said it was 8:30. I asked Mrs. D$ if it was a.m. or p.m.

psycho (LaLaLand)

dan i know you report things the way they are: therefore you must be very pissed at David Haye as you take jabs at him all the time. ever bother interviewing him yourself?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

I'm not P'd at him at all. I just find him to be less than honest. And if you read me regularly, you'd know that I had a lengthy interview with him late last year and wrote a lengthy feature on him off that interview just before he fought Ruiz. Google it or search my archive.

G$ (Bay Area)

Likely opponents for Berto in October? How about Randall 'KO King' Bailey?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

Nobody specific at the moment, but Bailey is not a bad idea, especially since they are both with DiBella.

Rusty R. (Fairmount, PA)

Dan, any word on Mike Jones next opponent? I heard that Tyner pulled out of there fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

Nothing specific, but he and Tyner never had a deal, so he didn't pull out of anything. It was just an idea to match them after Tyner beat Antwone Smith.

Drew (Akron)

Daniel Day-Rafael, did you score Alexander/Kotelnik fight differently when watching the replay at home on HBO?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Nope, although I admit I didn't watch the entire fight a second time all the way through.

Rafael (NYC)

Batdan (since you have a bat phone), I finally saw the Marquez-Diaz replay on HBO. I have a ton of respect for Marquez but I don't see him being successful above 135. I think he's maxed out power wise and gets hit easily. The top 140 pounders would be too much for him. I don't even think he beats Malignaggi at 140. What do you think?

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

I am not sure how he will do at 140 but he has earned the right to give it a try against a top guy, be it Khan or somebody else.

Horn (Vegas)

If Jose Suliaman started tweeting, would he charge us a small sanctioning fee to follow him?

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!!!!!

Daryl (LA)

Hey Dan, Im to the FNF in Ontario,CA tonight. Are Joe and Teddy approachable guys?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

If they are not busy, they are great with the fans. They are like me in that they really appreciate the fans who want to take the time out to meet them or say hello or take a photo or whatever.

Tor (Dallas, TX)

Really nice doubleheader on Top Rank Live tomorrow night. Mikey Garcia looks like a future star to me. What are your thoughts on him?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

I think he's Top Rank's best young prospect right now. It's a solid fight with Lock and no guarantee, but I like Garcia to win. I have thought for a few years that Garcia would eventually be a world champion.

Sato (Mexico City)

Dan, I was impressed with Zab at 140. Any word on his next opponent for October?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

Oct. 2, but no opponent yet. I spoke to Kathy Duva about it the other day and they are looking for an opponent.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, As avid a fight film/dvd collector as you are......what are the top three fights you want to add to your library but don't have or can't find?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Too many to name, but I'd like some Ray Robinson fights when he was welterweight champion, there are a few Duran fights, etc... I am quite satisfied with my library.

Ced (LV)

Buy or Sell: The meaningful part of Arreola's career is finished.

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Buy.

Andrew (Miami)

Those Suliaman jokes are getting kind of old.... he still sucks... but we get it.

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

They NEVER get old. Sort of like Marquez pee jokes.

Briks (Philly)

Any chance of Berto-Mike Jones?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

I'd like to see it, but I sort of doubt it as his next fight.

Chris (Overland Park, KS)

Did you go up in the arch last week in the Lou?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

I didn't go up it, but I took some pictures of it.

Stan (Durham)

Would you say that Kotelnik "won" even though he lost the decision meaning that he set himself up for some decent paydays in the future.

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

He definitely did that.

John H (Augusta GA)

Love child, your thoughts... Ahhhhh?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. He fights Jamaal Davis next week on the Adamek-Grant undercard.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Hey Dan, rumor has it there was some dissension in Dawson's camp, any truth to that?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

Well he did have a bad falling out with his manager, Mike Criscio. Other than that I think all is well. He recently did a new promotional deal with Gary Shaw from what I am told.

Fernando (Ft. Carson)

Can i pay you to burn me copies of your library?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

How much?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Breaking news from the Bat Email Fight Freaks -- was just told it's official. I will be in studio for FNF for our season finale, a special Saturday night edition on Aug. 28.

Bert (Minneapolis)

Dan- Cotto eats up Chavez Jr. There's no way Chavez candle the class, and certainly not the power, is there?

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

I tend to agree with you but I guess we'll see.

rob(jersey) [via mobile]

We should send a petition to Sharp and Panasonic to have them sponsor the Freaks. I can guarantee that our good King has done more to sell their products than any spokeman!

Bateman (NYC)

Are we ever going to see a Cotto-Margarito rematch??

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

I think it's possible after some other business is taken care of first. That fight will always be in their back pocket.

Rick (Marina)

Awesome, thats my Bday, Aug 28. whooooo.

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

You want Brian and I to sing to you on the air?

jrfromdallas (southfork)

Any truth to the rumor that the WBC is trying to have El perro fight K9 Brundage for the diamond Pet Smart superbelt?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Steve (Hollywood, Fla)

Dan, do valuev's poop jokes ever get old?

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

Yeah, a little.

Dapper D (NYC)

Any chance the date for the Cotto and Chavez Jr. fight moves up from December?

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

None.

Steve (Hartford)

Any word on Hopkins fighting?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

Not at the moment, but BHop is co-hosting FNF tonight so maybe he will tell the fans what the latest is during the show tonight.

Matt (VA)

Cotto-Chavez....HBO PPV or Top Rank PPV?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

Probably HBO PPV.

Randy (Cincinnati, OH)

how does the Sherman Williams fight get Evander closer to his goal of re-gaining the unified heavyweight title?

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

It doesn't but it's a fight Holy can and should win and it gets him a few dollars and another win.

Cole (UT)

Not excuse not to have read the blog/notebook now. With @danrafaelespn on twitter posting when they go up. Step your game up freaks!

Delphi (Oracle)

You hate James Toney.

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Have much of a life?

Matt (Spokane, WA)

How about Bing jokes? Hartford jokes?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Also staples!

Sean (NJ)

Dan, question on the Ring belt for Dawson-Pascal, and any Ring belt in general...if Dawson goes up there and dominates, but is on the wrong end of a home-field decision, does the Ring still have to award their belt to him?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

The Ring will respect the official decision of the judges.

Roy (Reno)

Although his act is already old, I am still looking forward to watching Arreola fight tonight. He is entertaining but I am done making excuses or believing he will change.

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

He is entertaining and I enjoy watching him fight. But I also know what he is -- an TV friendly heavyweight with limited potential. He's not in the same class as the Klitschkos.

Berndawg (CHI)

Any news on a Pavlik fight before the end of the year?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Nothing.

Derek (edmonton, alberta)

Angulo turns down 750k... Valuev turns down 2.5 mil....Povetkin turns down 2 mil... Williams turns down 1.5 mil... Pavlik turns down a 7 figure rematch with the champ... Mayweather turns his back on 40 mil.... Haye turns down a 50-50 split with the heavy weight champ... Collazo turns down a title shot for 6 figures......WHAT IS GOING ON???!!! 2010 is turning out to be a disaster for the sport.

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

STOP THE INSANITY!!!!!!

Randy (NYC)

how old is Guillermo Rigondeaux? He looks like he's in his mid 40's

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

Supposedly 29.

Richard (Oxford, United Kingdom)

Whats the single worst robbery you have ever witnessed ringside?

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

Off the top of my head I would have to say Santa Cruz getting HOSED against Casamayor. I had the fight like 11-1 for Santa Cruz, who also scored a knockdown. Most everyone at ringside had it AT LEAST 8-4 for Santa Cruz. Just a putrid decision.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga.)

Riddle for the Dan what does Aflac, Angulo, Haye, and Mayweather have in common?????

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

Quack, quack, quack -- DUCKS!!!!

aaron (Hartford)

Dan...one of the many reasons I love the RADs is because I am always fired up to talk boxing after a good fight and my wife always asks me how the boxing game was.... I have given up responding to her that it is not a game... so thanks again..

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

That is why I had the idea to start the RAD chats in the first place -- because after the fights I wanted to talk about them. ESPN was like, why bother? Who's going to be up chatting at midnight? I said let's just give it a try. They said OK. So the first one I did we had a ton of traffic and I've been doing them when I can after big fights since.

John H (Augusta GA)

jrfromdallas (southfork)Any truth to the rumor that the WBC is trying to have El perro fight K9 Brundage for the diamond Pet Smart superbelt?Quote of the day, hilarious!!

Justin (Springfield, N.J.)

Dan: The propsed Oct. 2 triple header seems a bit weak, no? Berto vs TBA (perhaps Kotelnik -- another guy moving up in weight, ala Urango); Sergei D. vs Collazo (who should be fighting Berto in a rematch); and Cabellero vs. Litzau (who got a cheap victory against Juarez). Would HBO really approve such a card? I'd prefer one decent fight to three below average ones.

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

That's another reason it's not even close to actually being done. The proposed matches are a little weak.

Craig (Colorado)

Did you see the Chris Martin fight on Shoebox ? I thouhgt he had no shot going in but he is quicker than snot.

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

He looked good against Avalos, toyed with him. I had seen him before on ShoBox and he looked pretty good there too a few months ago.

Pete (NYC)

Are you going to the Newark card for Adamek, Love Child etc?

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

No, I have my family visiting next week and I also have tickets with Mrs. DTM to see KISS that night!!

Stan (Durham)

When you spoke with Glen Johnson, did he give you any indication that he was done? I hope he isn't

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

No. I got the distinct impression he would fight again.

Cody (Tucson)

I like the way Adamek does his business. He doesnt wait for the networks. He goes off and does his own thing

Matt (L.A.)

Hey Dan, I am creating you as a boxer on Fight Night Round 4, do you prefer to be a power puncher or a speed guy?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

Power AND speed baby!

Paul B (NY, NY)

Dan...one of the many reasons I love the RADs is because I can crush 6-9 beers while talking about my beloved sport with the king of freaks!

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

We do not condone chatting and drinking. You could hit an extra key by accident on your keyboard and spill your drink.

Derek (edmonton, alberta)

Dan... Angulo has now avoided compelling, meaningful fights against Martinez and Sergei Dz. What should that tell us about Angulo's self-evaluation of his chances vs a skilled boxer?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

His actions speak louder than his barks.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

I saw you shout out to Jalen Rose on your twitter account, we've got to turn him into a freak and get him on the chats.

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

Jalen is my man. He's a HUGE boxing fan. When I see him in Bristol, we talk boxing and I hung out with him in Vegas when he was out there for the Mayweather-Mosley fight. He's a good boxing fan.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga)

BTW Alt-Tab is your friend freaks!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

The Freaks thank you for the reminder.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

Do you prefer to rock & roll all night or party every day?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

I'm thinking party every day?

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

All you Freaks better sign up to follow me on Twitter!!

Paul B (NY, NY)

Dan. Another one of my deam fights: Kim vs Katsides.

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Sick fight.

Peter (nyc)

Is Chavez afraid of fighting Pawel Wolak?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

LOL! Not at all.

Brendan (Philadelphia)

Dan, what happens first? Manny/Floyd fight or Philthy Rich Records releases an album?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Rick (Marina)

Dan, I dont have any online accts such as myspace, facebook, twitter, cause I find that as of no use for me. Now that your on twitter then thats an exception, I shall create a twitter acct.

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

I knew you were a true Freak.

Bing (Never Neverland)

Dan why should we follow you on twitter??? It's just another way for ESPN to pay you!

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

LOL! I dont make an extra dime!

Paul B (NY, NY)

I am locked out of Twitter from my work account but will this evening. Mrs DTM will win that bet. What are the stakes? Speaking of which, what is the statute of limitation on your bet with Ellerbe????

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

No statute of limitations!

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

Dan, is it safe to say that your hottest follower on Twitter is the increblie Erin Andrews?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

I didn't know she was following me.

Joe (NJ)

How big a fan of Boxing is Brian Kenny really. Or is he just a studio host who got stuck with the job. Seems like he enjoys it.

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

No, Brian is a hardcore, lifelong fan of the sport. I know there are probably many times he could have stopped hosting FNF. I think it's a labor of love for him. Believe, me his Fridays are killer with writing and hosting SportsCenter and then staying around to do FNF late at night.

Kevin (Boston)

Dan, did you hear Max say that Zsolt Erdei has a claim to the lineal? Was he serious?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

Yes, because there are some who trace the lineage thru Erdei, who beat Julio Gonzalez, who beat Michalczewski, who had beaten Virgil Hill for what many considered the lineal championship. Roy Jones got recognition by others as lineal champion for collecting all of the alphabet belts together to go with his incredible ability and ranking at top of the p4p list.

Andrew (Miami)

Ohhhhh, I'm a freak?

chico (turlock, ca)

anyword on saul alvarez next fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

Live under a rock?

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

Never been on Twitter before, but I am officially signed up and following our Leader. All Hail King of the Freaks, Dan Rafael!!!!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

Nice.

Andrew (Miami)

Dan I have a question I've had for a while: what does it mean to be a "lineal chamion"?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

You're the man who beat the man, who beat the man, who beat the man, etc... In many cases, the lineage breaks in many divisions, so the lineage is put back together when a fighter wins a fight in which he gains universal recognition as THE MAN in the division. Since Dawson is considered No. 1 and most folks have Pascal No. 2 at the moment, the winner will be recognized by most people as THE MAN in the division and thus claim the lineage and the Ring title, which generally (but not always) follows the lineage.

Cristian (Jersey City)

Has anyone ever called you Danny Danquiao?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

I think you just did.

Todd P (Tn) (Lexington, Tn)

Tor Hamer took one disputed loss and has vanished any news on when/if he will fight again?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

It wasn't disputed. I was there. He lost. And he was not that good to begin with.

Mark (Minneapolis)

Do you agree with the Rings current champions and structure?

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

Generally, yes, although I have my quibbles.

Shane (Selah,WA)

Dan, tell Brian the Freaks appreciate it. It's not the same without him in studio. Even if he was slapping the speed bag like a girl in that shoot with PBF....

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Hey Dan, How many on the 90+ titleholders in boxing could you name off the top of your head?

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

All of them.

cody (Minneapolis)

Who is responsible for coming up with sites for Shobox??? Gary Shaw promoted it last week and Avalos vs Martin was a good fight & I'm all about getting to see a decent live fight for $20 and an hour drive, but why would you feature a few undefeated prospects out of California 80 miles north of Minneapolis/St. Paul at a casino in the middle of nowhere?? Even though I almost hung myself during the Harris Aguilera fight. It was AWFUL!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

The casino paid him to do the show there, that's why.

G$ (Bay Area)

How was the first fight between Anselmo Moreno-Nehomar Cermeno? The rematch is being streamed online for free -- http://www.tvmax-9.com/live_deportes.asp.

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

Good call. Nice looking out for the Freaks.

John (Kalamazoo)

Dantonio Tarver, I had Kotelnik winning 7 rounds to 5 because I felt he was more effective despite his lower work rate. Am I just wrong. I have always been a fan of working smarter not harder and that applies beyond the boxing ring.

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

7-5 for Kotelnik is reasonable. It was a close fight. I don't agree. The judges didn't agree, but it is a legitimate score.

Brendan (Philadelphia)

Dan, I gotta say that this one Goddamn good chat today!

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

Thank you Harold Lederman.

Taylor (SLC, UT)

Dan, very big props on your twitter account. I wasn't a twitter'er until now, and I've really enjoyed your updates...please keep it up.

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

I will. I think I'm addicted.

Matt (Naperville, IL)

The lineal is vacant now for Light Heavy because Erdei had moved up in weight and vacated his title. It should go to the winner of Dawson Pascal.

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

Exactly.

Brian (Philly)

Dan, does Cena take out Nexus on Sunday? Summerslam baby!

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

I don't know but I will be watching. Maybe I will Tweet about Summerslam! My mother in law is coming down for the weekend and is taking my wife and I out for dinner, but she knows we have to go early enough on Sunday so I can be home for Summerslam action!

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Hey Dan, I thought Richard said if the freaks came out and bought Marquez v Diaz, he would stack undercards going forward. We did our part, tell him we feel cheated unless he upgrades Mosley v Latin Snake.

darryl p (indianapolis)

did u watch mosley vs shaq?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

Yes. It was entertaining. I didn't even know it was coming until like a day or two before it aired. They did a terrible job letting the press and fans know it was coming up.

Rhys (England)

Dan can I call you Danpongsaklek Danwonjongkam

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

If you must.

Joe (Allentown, PA)

What has Pascal done to deserve the #2 ranking? Hasn't Erdei achieved more at 175?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

Erdei left the division, gave up his title and went up to win a cruiser belt and has not fought since.

Brian (Toronto)

Leonard, Hagler, Duran, Hearns; how would you rank them ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

Leonard, Duran, Hagler, Hearns.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, Out of curiousity who amongst the ESPN family with Twitter accounts currently has the largest following? And approximately how many followers? The freaks love a good scrap...and we shall fight for the top spot!

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

I have no idea, but I think Simmons has hundreds of thousands. Some other guys have close to 100,000. I just started my account a few days ago, so I'm a long way off.

robb (north andover, ma)

dtm, random suggestion for the twitter: scoring fights! for televised fights you are at or watching, why not score the fight via twitter as it goes? what with the batberry it should be easy to post between rounds!

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

I've thought about that and may try that out this weekend.

Ruben (Seattle, WA)

Hey Dan i heard that Collazo is turning down the fight against Sergiy Dzinziruk Because he needs a tune-up first after the layoff.

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

His whole career has been tune-up for the big fights he's lost.

Greg (Armonk, NY)

What happened in Mosley vs. Shaq?

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Shane got the decision.

Armando (Nj)

Hi Dan - in your honest opinion, is this the worst year of boxing in the past 10 years? What other year does this remind you of as far as the overall lack of quality fights?

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

This has been pretty terrible overall and now that the fall is coming into clearer focus, it still rots for the most part.

Bert (Minneapolis)

Funny how on Saturday Mayweather ducked a HBO interview huh?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

Not at all. Floyd is exceptional at ducking.

Taylor (SLC, UT)

I'm in the middle of some meetings with investment bankers in NYC, and I'm monitoring the Freak Chatroom. Ha! They think I'm typing notes!

James (Lexington)

Better facepaint? Simmons or Stanley?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

Gene by far.

rob (williston park)

Dan although I love Caballero, would you have any interest in a fight vs. Litzau?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

I think as an undercard fight, it's not bad at all. Jason will put up a good fight, he's in a heavier division and he's coming off a solid victory.

Fernando (Ft. Carson)

why is hearns regarded so highly when he lost the biggest fights of his career? he had great talent and amazing power but fell short against leonard and hagler> reminds me of de la hoya came up short in his biggest fights.

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

He also beat a lot of good guys and won a ton of titles and fought with a style that made him a fan favorite. He absolutely demolished Duran (one of the best knockouts of all time), he got robbed in the rematch with Leonard and he beat guys like Benitez, Cuevas and Virgil Hill.

will (south carolina)

how come arturo gatti and diego corrales never fought each other

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

Just never happened. They were involved in other things, Gatti was on HBO, Chico on Showtime. Would have been a good fight.

Just Gotscolded (Work sac ca)

boss walked by and caught me reading the chat...asked me what I was doing on the internet while on the clock..explained I was reading DTM's chat... He said " Nice. His chats are cool. Allright hurry up though."

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

That is legendary.

miguel (Los Angeles)

Mayweather can learn something from Hearns

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Boom Boom Dancini, thank you for a classic line for a fighter that is very frustrating to be a fan of, Collazo: "His whole career has been tune-up for the big fights he's lost".

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

Am I wrong?

jcs (Winnipeg, Canada)

was the shaq-Mosley fight sanctioned by the WBC, for the global super mega belt?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

For a small sanctioning fee, of course.

Richard (Oxford, United Kingdom)

Frank Warrens September 18th bill must count as a freak card, no?? At least 7 fights that should be good value!

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

I agree. It is a terrific card.

Anthony (Sacramento )

Dan how is the Integragted ppv that Clderon and Segura are on. I am going to get it but have never ordered a ppv from this promoter. Are they quality broadcast with good announcers and commentators? Also how would you rate this particular ppv with a solid main event and the Mcwillimas bros?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

Yes, Integrated has produced or distributed many cards over the years. They've done cards from Europe using the Euro feed and they have been on site. They often use Col. Bob and Benny Ricard as announcers. I love the Calderon-Segura fight and the undercard that I have seen so far looks decent.

psycho (LaLaLand)

dan I am a distant relative of Jeff Fenech, were you ever a fan of him?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

Yes, Jeff was awesome to watch. I had a chance to meet him several times over the years and interview him, especially when he was working with Tyson.

Fernando (Ft. Carson)

he did crush duran and cuevas no denying that. I can conceded to the robbery of the 2nd leornard fight. I think he is a great fighter and maybe one of the greatest of his era but i find it hard to believe he is one of the great all time fighters. You have to have wins on your biggest nights. even if its just one

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

I didn't say he was top 10. I ranked him 4th among the big four. He rates probably somewhere in the top 30.

Steve (Winston Salem, NC)

Do you ever get a chance to talk boxing with Michael Buffer. What's he like and does he like to talk about the fight game. Considering he's made 400 million off "Let's Get Ready to Rumble" have you ever thought about copyrighting "freaks"?

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

Michael is a great guy and really knows boxing very well. We've sat and BSd about it several times.

darryl p (indianapolis)

what do u think is going to happen with ward vs dirrell?

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

I think it will be pushed back a month or two.

Paulo (Sao Paulo)

Leonard over Duran? Gotta respectfully disagree. Duran might have been the best lightweight of all time, and as good as Leonard was, he wasn't even the best Sugar Ray.

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

I dont agree at all. It's close but Leonard is a shade ahead of Duran. I consider them both among the top 10-15 fighters of all time.

miguel (Los Angeles)

why is bute #1 in the ring ratings?

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

I have no idea. I strongly disagree with the rankings, but I don't have anything to do with their rankings. I am paid to do my own for ESPN.

jcs (Winnipeg, Canada)

Jose Sulaiman, who was following the chat, just tweeted that he's sanctioning Gatti/Corrales for the Paradise belt. There is a significant fee attached, however.

Keith (New York, NY)

My take on cotto/chavez...two bonafide ticket sellers, in cotto's adopted backyard, which happens to also have a huge mexican population...arena will be rockin, and might rival judah/cotto and joppy trinidad as far as all-time revved MSG crowds go

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

It will be quite sick I am sure.

James (Lexington)

Is Bernard Hopkins in a rough financial situation? It seems like De La Hoya or his family would've convinced him to stop while he's on top and not when he's face first into the canvas?

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Bernard probably has the first dollar he ever made. He is a wealthy man.

Bert (Minneapolis)

Are you and Kevin Iole of Yahoo friends? You two are the only mainstream media boxing writers worth reading, imo. SI.com doesn't have boxing coverage, and CBS and FOX's are horrible too.

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Kevin's my man. Usually sit next to him at all the fights.

Nizzi (Des Moines, IA)

Any chance Calzaghe comes out of retirement to face Dawson or Bute?

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

Who knows? I get a lot of questions about this. As far as I know the man is retired and that's the way it is. I wish him good luck in retirement. If and when he decides to fight again, I am sure he will let us know.

Chuy (San Diego)

Why Duran over Hagler?

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

Even though Hagler beat Duran, Duran's overall career is superior. He was a long reigning and dominant lightweight champion, won legit titles in several weight classes, scored a legit win against a dead peak Ray Leonard for the welterweight title. Etc...

Dave (Arlington, VA)

Do you know if the Alexander-Kotelnik fight had a rematch clause? I'm thinking a rematch on a neutral place to settle the score.

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

No, there was no rematch clause.

psycho (LaLaLand)

Perro vs Kirkland???

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

Somday I hope.

Anthony (Sacramento )

Dan I have followed you for years! Starting at USA Today where I found your rankings and articles legit. But in those days you did the traditional 8, I believe, divisions. In your opinion would you like to see boxing go back to the days of the traditional weight classes?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

Yes, but I live in this world and that is not going to happen.

Nizzi (Des Moines, IA)

Is Calzaghe a HOFer?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

Definitely.

Fernando (Ft. Carson)

since you commented on bhop having the first dollare he ever made do you remember the first boxing article you ever wrote

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

Yes. I think it was a column for my college newspaper about the Evander Holyfield-George Foreman fight.

Steve (Hartford)

Haye v Adamek @ MSG in Dec. if Adamek wins next week?

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

I'd love to see it but won't hold my breath.

Jose Sulaiman (WBC (Mexico))

After awarding Rafael Marquez the vacant WBC Silver super bantamweight title in a featherweight fight, the WBC has instated a new policy that as long as a fighter has weighed a certain amount at any point in his life, he qualifies for that belt for the rest of his life. The Margarito-Pacquiao fight will now been sanctioned for all 12 WBC silver belts from minimumweight to light middleweight. To show that we do not do this just for sanctioning fees, we will only charge for 6 of the belts (3% x 6 = 18% of the purse).Thank you.

George (Fontana, CA)

Money is tight, BUT I want to order Fox Sports Espanol which will cost me an extra $5.00 so I can see the Kim v. Vasquez fight. What should I do. I think im going to get it and then cancel it on monday

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

Exactly. And the cost probably will be pro-rated and wind up costing a few cents. You can probably get away with that a few times. When I visited my father in law in San Diego earlier in the year, I made him order the Spanish tier so I could watch the TR Live show. I DVR'd it at his house and watched it late night after we had gotten home and everyone went to bed. And on Monday they canceled it.

Smitty (Atl, GA)

Can we expect Lampley & Merchant tomorrow for the HBO fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

Yes, the crew is Lampley, Larry and Emanuel.

Cody (Tucson)

Heard anything from Mayorga? What's ever happened between him and King?

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

His name has been tossed around as an opponent for Dzinziruk but I doubt it will happen. I doubt he'd make 154 and I doubt HBO would buy that crap.

psycho (LaLaLand)

which was the first boxing fight you ever watched?

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

I don't know exactly but I remember watching Mancini fights on network TV when I was a kid in the early 1980s.

Rob (Melville, NY)

It was a little weird seeing Emanuel Steward in the crowd last week but not on the broadcast. Do you know why he wasn't?

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

He was there as the trainer for Cornelius Bundrage and had worked his corner before the HBO telecast began.

Dave (Arlington, VA)

How about ranking Barrera, Marquez, Morales, Pacquiao?

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

This one is tough and you can really see it different ways and I probably have changed my mind over the years but today I would go: Pacquiao, Barrera, Morales, Marquez.

Floyd Mayweather (Las Vegas)

Don't forget I also turn my back on paying rent and my taxes

psycho (LaLaLand)

And which fight made you a freak?

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

I was always a fan but I became a demented, true die-hard insane Freak in the span of a few weeks in 1996 when I watched Barrera-McKinney in the first HBO BAD main evnet followed a few weeks later by Gatti-Rodriguez on the second BAD card.

Keith (New York, NY)

Financially impossible, not to mention the egos and rival promoters... but imagine an eight-man single elimination 154 tournament with seedings next year: Sergio Martinez, Paul Williams, Cotto, Angulo, KIRKLAND(!), Saul Alvarez, Chavez Jr, Sergei Dzinziruk....WOW

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

Would be awesome.

Stuart (UK)

Hey Dan,What do you see as 2010 fight of the year so far?

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

Been a terribly weak year. There are still four-plus months to go so I have hope something will emerge. But right now I'd have to say it's either Kessler-Froch or Escalante-Roman.

Anthony (Sacramento )

Im glad Larry will be back on the broadcast, I have missed his insight!

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Dan, One of the small pleasures of boxing in this past year has been how the "opponents" have shown up to fight! Pirog, Martin, and even Ouma (vs. Matrosiyan) earlier in the year have been spoilers at the highest level.

Smitty (Atl, GA)

Dan, enjoy as always. Just got a sick autographed piece of PBF with the sombrero on after the De La Hoya fight. Got it from Field of Dreams at the Rio. Do you have a favorite autographed piece?

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

I dont have many boxing autographs because in my job you can't really collect them, but I do have a signed Arturo Gatti corner jack that was used in the fight he had with De La Hoya (still blood on the pocket) that Gatti signed to me. I was also given a pair of fight worn trunks from the Love Child that he signed to me.

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

You Freaks are weak. Follow me on Twitter!

Joel (Queens,NY)

Are you interested in a Alfredo Angulo vs Cornelius Bundrage fight??

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

Not prticularly. Not terrible, but nothing exciting.

Griff pa [via mobile]

How many F bombs will arreola drop on fnf this aint hbo they better have their censor button ready

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

I was thinking about that this morning, for real.

Chris (Albany)

Dan u cursed every prospect of the year that you've named.

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

Before you make such a moronic statement go look at the full list. My track record is outstanding.

David (Houston)

Years back i was driving back to Texas from Arizona and stayed in a hotel in New Mexico. I had never really been into boxing but i was flipping around and it happened to be on. The fight was gatti v ward 1. I have been addicted to boxing ever since.

Court (DC)

Just joined twitter to follow you. Next up, basement repair.

Berndawg (CHI)

Berto/Zab Judah would rock for October 2nd. Just saying.

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

Ain't happening. Just saying.

Manny (Miami)

Is there a sanctioning fee for the Ring Belt?

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

None. Not a dime.

Khalil (Atlanta, GA)

Wow. Dan just tweeted while chatting. Most impressive. danrafaelespn Fight Freaks, check out this week's random thoughts blog: http://tinyurl.com/3y96vhn

jcs (Winnipeg, Canada)

I was about 10 years old, and the entire family was gathered around the TV on a weekend afternoon to watch Leanard/Hagler. That was before cable and ppv, and was just a huge sporting event that even the casual fan could get stoked for. That was my first fight memory.

Julio (IL)

Danister, great job. Seems the Cotto -Chavez fight is close. How close is it and what are your impressions?

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

Seems like it really will happen, but I'll believe it for real when it's official.

Justin (Minny)

Raf who else is on the televised portion of FNF tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

Josecito Lopez and Marvin Cordova. And if there is time, I think Olympian Shawn Estrada will get some airtime.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Angulo's nickname should be changed from el perro to el poodle.

Cody (Tucson)

Is the Spinks-Bundrage scrap on youtube yet. Haven't seen it yet

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

Dude why don't you check for yourself? I don't really care if it is or not as I was there. Unreal.

Roy (Reno)

If my memory serves me correctly Leonard and Hagler was on closed circuit PPV, and not on TV.

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

It was replayed on HBO.

Manny (Miami)

Never knew about the "Alt-Tab" function thanks!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

It's the Super Freak ace up the sleeve for a boss walking around the office during the chat.

Marc (Malden, MA)

Thoughts on Tavoris Cloud's performance? What percentage chance do you give him to beat the Dawson/Pascal winner?

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

Entertaining performance and he did what he had to do. But I think he's in trouble with a slick, skillful guy like Dawson.

Bill (Linthicum MD)

Is Glen Johnson a future Hall of Famer?

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

I don't think so. His promoter, Leon Margules, and I had a long discussion about that in St. Louis after the fight. He falls short.

Dany (Montreal)

Hello Dan. You'll be happy to know that your blog about Chad Dawson has been translated in French on the RDS website

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

Impressive.

George (Fontana, CA)

My earliest boxing memory is my dad taking me with him to see closed circut TV fights of Leonard v Duran III. Also, me standing outside of a house where the people inside were wacthing Leonard v. Hearns II and I could hear people going crazy in there.

Alex (D.C.)

In the Chad Dawson chat yesterday, a fan wrote in saying that Mayweather said that Dawson was the best boxer today. Any truth to that? I find it hard to believe Mayweather saying anyone other than himself is the best boxer ever.

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

Mayweather supposedly told that to Chad just before he fought the first Tarver fight. I was at the fight and recall writing something about it in the fight night story.

Brian (Toronto)

First boxing memory was my dad taking me to Maple Leafs Gardens to see Leonard/Hearns I on closed circuit, I was 8 years old.

Rob (Melville, NY)

Any word on Ismayl Sillakh? He seemed to have a little momentum after the Judah fight and he's 25 with a great amatuer pedigree, an exciting style and his ethnic background (a black Russian) seems pretty marketable. Why isn't he being pushed?

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

I hear nothing. Maybe it's because Square Ring doesn't really promote much at all.

Brian (Toronto)

Is your dvd collection in your will or will be be auctioned off by your wife ?

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

Feeling morbid today?

Nizzi (Des Moines, IA)

My freak moment. Foreman knocks out Moorer. It happend! It happened!

Roy (Reno)

Just my opinion but Cloud reminds me alot of Jeff Lacy.

George (Fontana, CA)

Interesting. Alot of our firsts Boxing memory that we consider special include Sugar Ray Leonard. Hmmm. And I was never a Leonard fan because I was a Tommy Hearns and Duran fan. I guess that shows how special Leonard was to boxing

Keith (New York, NY)

Dan- what was the story with Cunningham switching spots with the cutman in Alexander's corner mid-way thru the fight? Looked like the cutman took over the corner.

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

The cutman had to come inside the ropes to work on Devon's cut, so Kevin had to be outside the ropes. Only one man is allowed inside the ropes.

miguel (Los Angeles)

sadly the mora-mosley HBO PPV is going to be the first one I miss in 6 years

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

You and a lot of others who can't fathom paying $45 for that caliber show.

Jon (UK)

What was the biggest gift decision; Trinidad beating Oscar or Oscar beating Sturm?

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 PM)

Tito getting the nod over Oscar was way worse than Oscar getting the nod over Sturm.

Milton (Raleigh)

Is the Super Six tiebreaker a confusing as it seems? It appears to be very convoluted

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

I dont think so at all. The main thing is head to head and then KOs. The scorecard stuff makes perfect sense, but it is unlikely to be needed.

JP (L.A., CA.) [via mobile]

Dan, I'm fairly new to the chats and I always see the mentions of Winky Wright with bad business deals. What's the story behind it?

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

Among many, he turned down $5 million to fight Jermain Taylor in the rematch of their draw for the middleweight title.

boxaholic (riverside,ca)

Since you don't like the Margacheato vs Pacquiao fight so much are you going to boycott the fight like I am?

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

No, I am going to do my job and cover it like a professional.

The Boxing Advocate (Calgary)

Dan, how does this sit with you: in Canada, outside of Quebec, the customers of only one t.v. provider will be able to buy the Dawson-Pascal fight (via ppv) and they will have to settle for a French language broadcast? This is a huge opportunity for Canadian boxing and Pascal's promoter (GYM) is blowing it.

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

Sucks to be them I guess.

Maya (New York)

Who do you have as fighter of the year so far?

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

Not Mayweather.

Gutterdandy (nyc)

Dan, David Haye was quoted this week again saying that, contrary to what you reported, the Klitschkos were asking for options and "control of his career" during the most recent negotiations. Has he run out of excuses?

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

I don't believe him.

Horn (Vegas)

How do you feel about Scoop Jackson's article on Mayweather?

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

I liked it. Scoop called me ahead of time to ask me a few questions about some things related to the whole Pac-May situation. Scoop is a die-hard Mayweather guy and even he is disgusted with now.

Jason (Riverside,Ca)

Hi Dan. I noticed on who you follow on your twitter account, you have Dana White as one of the people. I remember you saying you weren't big on MMA, is it to see what Dana has to say thats boxing related?

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

I don't follow MMA but I have a lot of respect for what Dana has done with UFC and he has some interesting and funny things to say.

robert (LA)

Whats your thoughts on the ring dropping alexander to 3rd, meaning bradley vs alexande won't be for the lineal title?

Dan Rafael
  (2:31 PM)

I think it is a horrific decision.

John (LA)

Who are your favorite people to follow on twitter?

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

I don't know yet, I just started the account a few days ago.

Roberto (Miami)

Danfucius, thanks to your twitter I was turned on to Lou Dibella's twitter. Dude is like the Dana White of boxing, he goes in with no filter!

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

Lou is hilarious when he gets rolling on there.

Jeff (Gilbert, AZ)

Dan,part of me was pleased that the crowd started chanting manny's name when PBF was shown on the jumbo tron in the STL last week.

Antonio (Westwick)

Has Ronald hearns done anything to earn a title shot? And if I were k-9 wouldn't you like to fight someone who would bring a much bigger payday?

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

He's done nothing but it's a marketable fight and probably an entertaining one.

Chioke Hassan (Baltimore,Md)

Dear DanCould you see President Obama Pardoning Hurricane Carter?

Dan Rafael
  (2:35 PM)

You ask me this same inane question every single week. Hurricane Carter is no longer in prison and would not need a pardon so I have no idea what you are talking about, so let's give the question a rest.

Loren (NYC)

I'm sorry I just cant get enough of the RA Rugged Man interview/beatdown of Floyd! I might have listened to it 30x over the past few months.

Dan Rafael
  (2:36 PM)

It was a great interview but I am not sure you need to listen to it 30 times. That makes me concerned for your welfare.

Everardo (Sacramento, Ca)

Do you think Angulo still has a chance to change his mind about the Martinez fight? If not who would you like see him fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:36 PM)

No, the fight is no longer on the table I don't believe.

jimmy b (NY)

Obama would need to pardon Jack Johnson first - McCain has been pushing that for years...

RS3 (Stamford CT)

The Ring drops Alexander to 3rd.....The Ring is owned by Oscar/Golden Boy......Oscar/Golden Boy promotes Amir Kahn......just saying.....

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

While that is true, I am sure that had nothing to do with the decision knowing the guys who run Ring. I don't agree at all with the decision but I also have no doubnt that it was done without any relation to Khan being with GB.

Tim (St. lou)

Hurricane Carter? HA! Ha!!!!! Funniesy post I think I've ever seen

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

I've seen that question for weeks. It's been ticking me off for weeks. I couldn't take it anymore.

Aaron (Hartford)

Dan, you think DiBella has Manfredo in mind for Pirog...since Manfredo was on the radar for Jacobs...seems like a good first fight for Pirog with a somewhat of a big name in the states...

Dan Rafael
  (2:40 PM)

I could see that fight happening. Pirog is with Artie Pelullo, who is a good friend of DiBella's. I could definitely see that fight getting made.

Frank (NYC)

Will Obama pardon James Kirkland? Oh, wait, never mind . . . .

James Kirkland (Halfway House)

I agree. Alvarado is an IDIOT.

Brock (Illinois)

I tried to convert some new Freaks by taking them to the Alexander fight. I got at least one. The rest were excited because they got a picture with Max who they know for being on Around the Horn years ago. BTW, Im the one that yelled "King Freak" to get your attention there.

Dan Rafael
  (2:41 PM)

LOL! I heard you but didn't see you.

dan (london)

happy about showtimes 4 man bantamweight tournement but theres an arguement that the top 4 in the weight are not involved in montiel, cermano, moreno and hasegawa. its like 4 Bute's

Dan Rafael
  (2:41 PM)

You are right but the fights they lined up are still good fights even if the winner of the thing won't be able to claim No. 1 in the division.

Seamus (St. Paul, MN)

Birth of a freak, driving with my father to pick up my brother's birthday cake February, 1990. His quote verbatim, "At least Tyson will kill him quickly, no one will ever remember that poor bastards name."

Dan Rafael
  (2:43 PM)

By the way Freaks, you can listen to my Monday appearance on the Bernie Miklasz Show on St. Louis' ESPN Radio: http://tinyurl.com/38t63gp

Angel (Carson City)

I was so disappointed with the Chris Avalos fight - both his performance and management. Why would they put this guy in with a good counterpuncher this early in his career!

Dan Rafael
  (2:44 PM)

They thought he was ready. They turned out to be wrong. It happens.

Brandon (Houston)

Don't you think that Bradley and Alexander have taken something away from a potential fight with their recent performances?

Dan Rafael
  (2:46 PM)

Not at all.

AL (WI)

Dan, I didn't see the fight but do you really think Spinks is a shot fighter? Could it be that je just had an off night?

Dan Rafael
  (2:46 PM)

Shot like a gun. No legs, no conditioning, no apparent desire.

Jack (Dallas)

Maybe Obama will pardon the banished.

Tony (Sacramento, CA)

Hey Dan, thanks for the chats every week. Any word on if the family issues Chavez Jr is having are legit? I read Wolak's people talking about Jr is just out of shape and wont be ready in time. Thanks!

Dan Rafael
  (2:47 PM)

I am not sure what the issues are but Arum said it was something to do with his father.

Joel (Queens,NY)

I loved the interview Dan!!!! I loved how you stood up for boxing and that it is not all corruption and money hungry promoters exploiting old fighters. I also liked how you said next time he interviews you will discuss both the good and bad points about boxing

Dan Rafael
  (2:48 PM)

Glad you liked.

robb (north andover, ma)

has ruslan provodnikov got a next opponent? i don't know how far he'll go but he's fun while he's here

Dan Rafael
  (2:48 PM)

Nothing at the moment, but I love that guy.

JB (Toronto)

DTM. Do you keep all the fights that you DVR or get sent to you? My collection is growing at a rapid pace and don't want to hang on to cards I won't watch again just for the sake of having a massive library. How do you handle this for your own collection?

Dan Rafael
  (2:49 PM)

I have everything on DVD (and the older ones on VHS).

adam (philly)

Dan, have you heard anything from HBO on whether they plan to renew Larry's contract. I know that they had a couple of option years. I hope they do.

Dan Rafael
  (2:49 PM)

Larry is going to be around HBO for years to come. Let's put it that way.

darryl p (indianapolis)

hey dan i wanted to know did u know former showtime exec jay larkin and do u have any stories about the guy rest in peace jay larkin

Dan Rafael
  (2:52 PM)

Yes, I knew Jay well for a long time. I always enjoyed talking to him and being with him. He was a guy you could talk about all kinds of stuff with not just boxing. He was friendly, enjoyed the media guys and could party too. One of my fondest memories was when Showtime did the DeMarcus Corley-Randall Bailey card in Washington, he took me and my wife out for dinner the night before along with another Showtime person and we had a great time. Didn't even really talk boxing much. He was far more interested in my wife's career.

Winky Wright (Dean's Office)

Dan, I don't normally do this but I hereby confer upon Perro Angulo an honorary doctorate in Negotiations. He is one of our finest students ever. Brings a tear to my eye.

JJD (Seattle)

I originally wasn't too harsh on El Perro because I was thinking he in still pretty inexperienced and he stepped up against Cintron and lost. However, I didn't realize that Angulo is *28*. In the prime of your career, you *have* to take that shot. Bad, bad Perro!

AJ (Buffalo)

Dan someone asked Dawson about his conditioning yesterday and he said he was putting in 5miles a day for tomorrows fight. Who do you think is the best conditioned boxer today?

Dan Rafael
  (2:55 PM)

There are a lot of them. Most guys come to fight in good shape.

Pete (Detoit)

Dan, why is Spinks a shot fighter now, but you picked him to win? Washe shot against Latimore? I drove down from Detroit, great performance by K-9, he neverlet Spinks in from the opening bell.

Dan Rafael
  (2:56 PM)

I picked him to win on Friday in my chat. Then I saw him Saturday morning at the morning of IBF weigh in and changed my mind. He had nothing even after having overnight to rehydrate. Dead man walking.

Jose Sulaiman (WBC)

I am pleased to announce that future sanctioning fees will be used so that I may buy Twitter, and so thus charge everyone who uses it a sanctioning fee, and also to censor anything and everything negative that Dan Rafael could possibly write about me.

Bob (Denton, Tx)

Its funny how these guys after fights say they will fight anybody anytime. But when it comes down to it, P-Will, Angulo and others who claim that dont fight .

Alfredo Angulo (Mexico)

From now on: Everybody call me "El Chihuahua" Angulo, Okay!?!?!?

Charles (DFW)

Spinks was shot because he spent too much time partying with Ricky Hatton.

Dan Rafael
  (2:58 PM)

No, I think he spent too much time partying in the St. Louis hood street corner if you know what I mean.

John (Phoenix)

Is Penelosa still around?

Dan Rafael
  (2:59 PM)

I think he wants to still fight.

robb (north andover, ma)

nice defense of boxing on the radio show. keep up the good fight debunking myths!!!!

Charles (DFW)

Ouch, I think I do know what you mean.

chris (oklahoma city)

Dan the man, HBO offered me $750,000. to not attend the chat today but I said no

Ross (Boston, Ma)

Do you give Jessee Brinkley any shot against Bute?

Dan Rafael
  (3:00 PM)

Slim and none.

Fernando (Ft. Carson)

dan help me out with my dvd collection please

Chris (Overland Park, KS)

Dan, scale of 1 to 10, what do you give the ring card girls from the fights in St. Louis last week?

Dan Rafael
  (3:00 PM)

About a 7.

Kericuss (US AIR FORCE)

Dan, what do you think of Khan vs Judah in DECEMBER? Do you think Khan's handlers would for that fight?

Dan Rafael
  (3:00 PM)

That is not one of the fights being discussed but it's a good fight.

Gutterdandy (nyc)

When is someone going to tell Cris Arreola that Vitali didn't "run" from him, he beat the crap out of him? Between that story and his constant fibbing to the media about how hard he's working, I'm wondering if Cristobal isn't a bit delusional. I mean, I understand Arreola has an aversion to running, but....

Dan Rafael
  (3:01 PM)

Vitali beat the snot out of Cris. He's rationalizing. He isn't the first fighter to do that and won't be the last.

Randy (NYC)

Is the Dawson fight the only one being shown on HBO tomorrow night?

Dan Rafael
  (3:02 PM)

Yes, unfortunately.

ram (elizabeth, nj)

dan, can a fighter be inducted in HOF just basing on his amateur credentials like Guillermo Rigondeaux?

Dan Rafael
  (3:04 PM)

It's possible but rare. Laszlo Papp is in because of his amateur career.

jcs (Winnipeg, Canada)

Can you confirm the rumor that Ricky Hatton has in fact grown so large that he is now two Ricky Hattons.

Dan Rafael
  (3:04 PM)

I can neither confirm nor deny.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Just catching up with the chat now Dan, and I'm surprised no one mentioned how you were calling out Mayweather on Twitter for ducking Pacquaio... That was hilarious

Dan Rafael
  (3:06 PM)

He asked.

chris (oklahoma city)

For the record as a fight freak I love the Bantamweight showdown on Showtime. As much as I would've liked to see it as a 6 man with Donaire and Montiel, there's still a chance that we see the winner of the tourney and the winner of the other fight square off. Great matchups. Props to SHO

Horn (Vegas)

So not only is Mayweather afraid of Pacman, he also appears to be afraid to give a live HBO interview.

rob(jersey) [via mobile]

Oh wise King - just read the latest tweet. I hope Lemieux's injury isn't serious.

Dan Rafael
  (3:06 PM)

I don't know the exact nature of the injury but it is apparently enough to keep him out of Aug. 28.

Brendan (Cherry Hill,NJ)

Hey Dan great notebook. Bute against Brinkley oct 15th, will espn2 be televising?

Dan Rafael
  (3:06 PM)

No, ESPN is not showing it.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Dan, I'm trying to come up with a good excuse to ditch my girlfriend so I could get in on the RAD tomorrow night. Help a freak out.

Dan Rafael
  (3:07 PM)

Just say no and then follow me on Twitter.

chuzen (st. louis)

dan, thanks for putting that radio guy in his place when you were on the bernie miclasz show. im getting sick and tired of people complaining about "the ills of boxing", but we can always count on you to say "why not talk about what's good about boxing". keep it up

Dan Rafael
  (3:07 PM)

I was just keeping it real.

Chris (Overland Park, KS)

Dan I was at the fight last Saturday. King did a great job of promoting the fight. I think boxing could actually use King right now. Have to say no one around me thought Alexander won. I thought watching in person draw or Kotelink by 1 point. Watched on tv again though and I can see why Alexander won more rounds, but close.

Dan Rafael
  (3:09 PM)

I give DK credit for not only putting on a great show, but for getting out there and pounding on the promotional end. He and his staff did a great job and the fighters were all cooperative. Props to him and for the folks in St. Louis for really embracing the fight. 10,000 showed up and the local sports net did a great job covering it as did the local media. There were two stories a day in the newspaper all week and it was on the front page of the sports section all week. People were excited about it. When I was at the airport on Sunday I heard people talking about it in the place I had breakfast and also in the shops.

Dustin (Wichita, KS)

How'd you score Cloud vs. Johnson?

Dan Rafael
  (3:10 PM)

115-113 for Cloud. I Tweeted my score that night!

chuzen (st. louis)

jose suliaman has announced that it is awarding valuev's poop a super galactic diamond belt, while marquez's urine will still be the regular champion of bodily fluids, for a small sanctioning pee, er, fee, of course

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

A lot of people are saying that if Dawson beats Pascal tomorrow and then Bute, then he will have a massive following in Montreal like they do... Do you see that happening with his personality?

Dan Rafael
  (3:11 PM)

I think it's possible. The Montreal folks are great fans have embraced fighters who are not from there. Librado Andrade, for one.

Matt (NY)

Dan, keepin it real would be also discussing the bad of boxing NOT just the good.

Dan Rafael
  (3:11 PM)

If you read me you know I don't shy away from the bad. But it has to be balanced.

Tony Stewart (Burger King)

I asked Floyd Mayweather what he wanted to eat and he said "I ain't got nothing to say."

Ced (LV)

I like when espn does the special boxing events in the winter. Anything in the works besides the one from the military base?

Dan Rafael
  (3:12 PM)

Not at the moment that I aware of.

Andrew (New York)

Don King, despite being such a public figure, really is pretty damn mysterious. Has he ever been married? Does he have children? Was he born with that haircut and flag? What a fascinating and frightening man.

Dan Rafael
  (3:14 PM)

If you spent five seconds doing research you would easily find the answers. He is married to his beloved Henrietta, who has been sick for some time. He has children. And no, he was not born with that haircut or a flag.

Micah (Binghamton, NY)

Whats up Dan? Getting your daily updates on Twtitter is great! Hey, Ward-Dirrell happening next month or not? Also, how bizarre was the Cloud-Johnson postfight interview?

Dan Rafael
  (3:15 PM)

As I wrote in my blog today, I believe the Ward-Dirrell fight will be postponed.

Charles (DFW)

Now I know why Don King never combed his hair. If he did, he would look like Charlie Rangel.

Dan Rafael
  (3:15 PM)

What the anti-DK folks say is that he keep his hair high like that to hide the horns.

Deezy (Sparks, NV)

Any new on Ji Hoon Kim's next fight?

Dan Rafael
  (3:16 PM)

Freaks should I ban him for not looking at the sked and knowing he is in a world title fight TOMORROW? Jeeez.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

I was trying to find out how to friend you on twitter, but Leonard Ellerbe told me that you don't have a twitter.

Chris (Overland Park, KS)

Deezy might as well of asked you when your next chat is.

mrboxing guru (compton ca)

ban his ass!!!

Banishment (Down Under)

Young Deezy, Come on down!

Charles (DFW)

Actually, Ellerbe said that there is no such thing as Twitter and there never has been.

Fernando (Ft. Carson)

BAN HIJM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Dan.... for Deezy, let's make it easy... BANNNED

Dan Rafael
  (3:19 PM)

Deezy, the Freaks have spoken in droves. You are banned.

Dan Rafael
  (3:19 PM)

Come on Freaks, you're a bit weak today with the Twitter.

Harry (Johannesburg, SA)

DTM, Who is being considered to face Berto on Oct. 2?

Dan Rafael
  (3:20 PM)

Right now just a lot of names but nobody seriously as far as I know and I spoke to DiBella during this chat.

Ross Greenburg ((HBO))

I'm officially confirming that Twitter does exist and Dan Rafael has had several tweets. ...

Dan Rafael
  (3:20 PM)

Brilliant.

Mario Mungia (Texas)

Dan, I loved the way that Scoop Jackson articulated the Mayweather scenario and explained in detail the problems with the way Floyd is pertraying himself to the fans and media. But does anyone at ESPN know you've been writing about the same stuff for the past several months?

Mario Mungia (Texas)

Dan, the FREAKS NEED to know??? JuanMa-Marquez, Mosley-Mora PPV... Which are you watching live?

Dan Rafael
  (3:22 PM)

Juanma-Marquez.

Harry (Johannesburg, SA)

DTM, loved hearing you defend boxing on the St. Louis talk show, you need to get on the radio more often

Dan Rafael
  (3:22 PM)

I go on the radio all the time.

Deezy ((Banishment))

Life ain't easy, when you're name is Deezy; Please don't banish me Dan. Please oh Pleezy

Dan Rafael
  (3:23 PM)

Do I give him a second chance? He wrote in and said he hadn't had Internet access for a month. I am almost having a moment of remorse for banning him. (I said ALMOST.)

Ryan (Willowbrook IL)

What up Dan the Man!? Judging from you Notebook, it is safe to assume that Bradley is coming back to 140 to fight Alexander if the fight happens?

Dan Rafael
  (3:25 PM)

Yes, the jump to 147 was not meant to be for good. When Maidana pulled out of the fight they made the Abregu fight.

Marc (Potter, WI)

Mayweather: Caught between Taxman and Pacman

robb (north andover, ma)

that doesn't excuse the failure to check the sked!!!

Dan Rafael
  (3:26 PM)

Deezy I am sorry to say but the Freaks are having no mercy on you today.

James (UK)

Just ran into Ellerbe, said hello, asked why he didn't say it back, he said he doesn't exist, neither do I, neither does boxing, twitter, Ross Greenburg, Bob Arum, Al Haymon, Don King, Manny Pacquiao, Antonio Margarito, Freddie Roach, rent or the IRS.

chuzen (st. louis)

dan, who is the DUCKER OF THE YEAR? el perro, floyd, haye, pwill, etc?

Dan Rafael
  (3:27 PM)

Let's have a tournament!!! Super Four Ducker World Boxing Classic. You win if you duck the first round fight the longest.

The Boxing Advocate (Calgary)

I'm not usually one to harp on the bad. I'll turn to the positive. What fight has you most excited: Calderon-Segura, Abraham-Froch or Lopez-Marquez?

Dan Rafael
  (3:28 PM)

I like all three but for action I think I might go with Abraham-Froch. I see no way it can't be interesting.

Mo (VA)

Dan, Can we get banished for not reading your twitter?

Dan Rafael
  (3:28 PM)

I'm not sure yet. It's a fluid situation.

Chris (Overland Park, KS)

Deezy should do a haiku and if it's good he gets a second chance

Dan Rafael
  (3:29 PM)

I like that. Deezy, let's get your best boxing haiku.

Lucas (Danbury, CT)

Abraham-Froch should be like rock 'em sock 'em robots...they probably could fight in a four foot ring.

Dan Rafael
  (3:29 PM)

Exactly. That will be a good fight.

jcs (Winnipeg, Canada)

The tournament could be billed as a Big Duck-Off to the sport of boxing, and Arum could come in at the end and flipthe bird.

AL (WI)

"I'm not sure yet. It's a fluid situation." You know what IS a fluid situation? JMM's pee.

Dan Rafael
  (3:30 PM)

I set that on a tee for you and you hit it out of the park.

Roy (Reno)

I don't see any opponents that are free that Berto could fight in a compelling match-up. Can you give us a couple of realistic names that would make for a compelling fight.

Dan Rafael
  (3:32 PM)

It's tough. He could give Collazo a rematch, but Collazo will undoubtedly price himself out. He could have just taken the Mosley fight, which would have also spared us all a crappy PPV from Golden Boy. The list of possible opponents is not long.

Jose Sulaiman (Mexico)

I'm ready to award the Diamond Ducking Belt to the world's greatest Ducker. Of course there will be Ducking belts in each weight division for a small sanctioning fee, of course.

Pat (Montreal)

Hi Dan, Do you give Pascal any chance tommerow night against Dawson ?

Dan Rafael
  (3:36 PM)

Pascal has a big heart and a good chin and he is at home. Of course, he has a chance. I like Dawson's physical attributes a bit more as well as his overall skills.

Derek (edmonton, alberta)

I have a feeling Alfonso Gomez' name will pop up for Berto....

Dan Rafael
  (3:37 PM)

Very doubtful. HBO isn't buying that dreck.

Eric (PA)

Over in the other chat, Bernard is saying that he would fight Dawson. Does he even believe what he says? Seems convenient when he doesn't have a fight right now, considering he could have had Dawson six months ago.

Dan Rafael
  (3:38 PM)

BHop had his chance and wasn't interested. Now when he has nowhere to go all of a sudden he's interested? Whatever.

El Perro (the party)

Its my party and ill DUCK IF WANT TO...DUCK IF I WANT TO...

Mark (Mary Esther, FL)

Freaks, you don't have to have a Twitter account to follow Dan. I signed up to follow on my phone and get his tweets in text without having to have an account. FOLLOW

Dan Rafael
  (3:40 PM)

I didnt even know that you could do that. That is pretty cool.

chuzen (st. louis)

if it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, its david haye

Ross (Indianapolis)

Dan, is Jamaal Davis a game opponent for the Love Child next weekend, or just an easy touch to help get him back on track?

Dan Rafael
  (3:41 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. I don't expect the LC to have any problems.

jcs (Winnipeg, Canada)

In Spanish, Duck is Pato (or so I just read on a translation page), so maybe Angulo can now be el pato?

tonycharisma (cameron,nc)

DTM whats up i was wondering did Bob arum ever tell u if he was remotely interested in making marquez-pacquiao3

Dan Rafael
  (3:42 PM)

Not interested at all in doing business with Golden Boy.

Jim ((CA))

Dan, your Top 5 P4P duckers?

Dan Rafael
  (3:44 PM)

1. David Haye; 2. Floyd Mayweather; 3. Alfredo Angulo; 4. Floyd Mayweather; 5. David Haye.

Cody (Minneapolis)

It seems to me a lot of industry hate right now for Golden Boy. Do you think that there will be enough backlash that it'll result in some high profile fighters leaving (other than Duckweather)?

Dan Rafael
  (3:47 PM)

They can hate all they want but when you are on top you are a target. Simple as that.

Bert (Minneapolis)

Best top 5 list ever!

Derek (edmonton, alberta)

lol, right on Dan

Dan Rafael
  (3:47 PM)

No. 6 is Mayweather also.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

It would be cool for boxers to do chats that last longer than 10 minutes. I know their schedule gets busy when fight night approaches, but throughout the year they can't be all that busy...

Dan Rafael
  (3:49 PM)

Is Hopkins still going?

Brandon C. (NYC)

Man it's going to be hilarious around here when PBF beats PacMan next year....

The point is just fight him. I couldn't care less who wins. I just want to see the fight already.

Chris C (Washington DC)

Would you be interested in a bernard hopkins-glen johnson fight?

Dan Rafael
  (3:51 PM)

Yeah, the first time they fought.

Ray (NSQ)

Hopkins bailed at 3:46

Dan Rafael
  (3:51 PM)

He's no match for me.

Joel (Queens,NY)

I'm a Mayweather fan but Dan is right its either put up or shut up and apparently he is shutting up

AL (WI)

"The point is just fight him. I couldn't care less who wins. I just want to see the fight already." Agreed, Dan. There is nothing worse than wasted talent.

JP (Columbus, OH)

BHop had to go join all the other old folks for the early bird special at Denny's. It's dinner time.

Steve (Hartford)

How much will Chad make for tomorrow's fight?

Dan Rafael
  (3:52 PM)

Not what the purses are but Chad is surely making more than a million.

robb (north andover, ma)

if you outlasted hopkins, is that a CKO (chat knockout) at 3:46?

Dan Rafael
  (3:53 PM)

Naturally.

Joe (NJ)

It's safe to say Mayweather and Haye are holding onto their unbeaten record and alphabet Belt like they were a life preserver and the Titanic just went down.

Dan Rafael
  (3:54 PM)

That is not fair to say in Floyd's case because he does not hold any belts right now.

Grey (Cape Cod, MA)

What other welterweights would HBO allow Berto to fight? Bailey, Jones, Joshua Clottey are the only ones that seem realistic (and I don't t

Dan Rafael
  (3:55 PM)

If they can't make a really big Berto fight -- which they can't -- I'd try to make the Jones fight. At least it's another young, fresh guy and it probably could be made because Jones won't come overly expensive for the opportunity.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Rafael by tko at 3:46, Hopkins corner throws in the towel.

Mitchel (houston)

Wow!!! This chat is still going on??? Had to go get a haircut and DTM is still going strong! DTM's chats are like the 15 rounders of yesteryear!!!

Dan Rafael
  (3:56 PM)

More like 40 rounders on barges in the river.

Derek (edmonton, alberta)

seriously Dan, have you ever asked Dibella about the possibility of him making Berto/Cintron ? It seems like it would be easy to make quickly for the fall date.

Dan Rafael
  (3:56 PM)

I mentioned it, he didn't have a big reaction.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Hey Dan, Since we are on the ducking bandwagon right now, who was or is the most avoided fighter of all time?

Dan Rafael
  (3:57 PM)

You have to look at guys who waited forever for title shots, like Hagler and Archie Moore, for example.

Ray (Alexandria, VA)

How about Jimmy Lange vs. Berto. He's a popular fighter in our DC area.

Dan Rafael
  (3:59 PM)

You must be smoking dope. It's not a competitive fight for 10 seconds.

Dan Rafael
  (4:00 PM)

OK, Fight Freaks, thanks for the spirited chat. Remember to report back here after Pascal-Dawson for a little RAD action. And make sure to check out the notebook, sked and blogs if you have done so, as well as follow me on Twitter @danrafaelespn. Peace.
