Chat with Pat Yasinskas

Ryan (Tampa)

You think Bucs winning 6 is unrealistic? I feel they will be improved from last year and I don't see their schedule as being that tough. Or am I a homer? Haha.

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:51 PM)

No, don't think that's unrealistic. In fact, that's about what I'm thinking at the moment.

matt (pittsburgh pa)

hey pat do you think the bucs should of kept leftwich in the starting lineup longer than they did? even though they were losing it wasnt really his fault thanks

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:52 PM)

Just my opinion, but does it really matter now? And did it really matter then? All Bucs were trying to do last year was get past London game to have Freeman ready.

Darlene (Charlotte)

I heard the announcers rave and rave over Clausen's pass to Kenny Moore last night. From where I sat, the ball was juggled and almost intercepted. I realize the bottom line is that it was caught for a completion, but don't you think the pass and catch were blessed with a great deal of pure luck?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:53 PM)

Think that's fair to say. That's pretty much how I saw it.

Ksly (Atlanta, Ga)

Hey Pat, with Michael Jenkins out who are the Falcons looking at to replace the veteran? I really don't like Finneran he's just as slow as Jenkins, and Jenkins is really only servicable as a blocking receiver. Will the Falcons look inside the camp for a compliment to Roddy, or will they look in free agency? I know Crayton may get cut from Dallas, and Plaxico is due to fly out of jail maybe to Atlanta.

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:55 PM)

Honestly, I don't think Falcons are looking to replace Jenkins at all, as long as he's healthy for start of the regular season. He plays an important role in their offense. Harry Douglas will get more playing time this year, but mostly in the slot. With Roddy White and Tony G., I don't think Falcons need to do anything. They've got enough major targets and Jenkins can play his role.

Dwayne Jarrett (Charlotte NC)

I showed all the haters out there that I can step up and be a solid WR, didn't I?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:56 PM)

It was one preseason game. Do it every day in practice and the rest of the preseason. Then, we'll talk.

Mitch (Tampa)

Hey Pat, have you heard who the front runner is for the Bucs nickel corner is? Also, who takes the last DT spot, Ryan Sims or Dre Moore? Thanks

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:57 PM)

They'd like it to be Myrone Lewis, but he needs to get on the field. In the short term, they might have to go with Mack or Biggers. Flip a coin on the DTs.

RAY GORDON REID ( OXFORD MS 38655)

QUESTION TO PAT YASSINSKAS AT 1.15 HI PAT WHO WINS NFC SOUTH

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:58 PM)

I'll make my official predictions right before season starts.

Colton (Rock Hill, SC)

Will Dwayne Jarret be able to step-up into the 2nd string WR position opposite of Steve Smith, and be a factor other teams pay attention to?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:59 PM)

I still say Brandon LaFell's going to be the No. 2 WR.

Jim (MS)

Hey Pat! Great work covering the training camps. I like your Josh Freeman take as he shot back at AB. Bucs will be better but have to clear the winning edge hurdle of fininshing teams, agree? Is RM getting that throught to them from what you have seen? Thanks!

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:59 PM)

I'm sure that's been discussed, among many other things. Overall, much more organized and positive vibe out of Bucs camp this year.

Dave (Columbus, OH)

Two questions concerning Derrick Brooks legacy. Does he get into the HOF in 2014 and is he added to new formed RJS ring of honor in 2011?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:00 PM)

He better. On both counts.

Mitch (NOLA)

Any news on Morestead? Never thought I'd care for a punter but I love that kid!!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:01 PM)

Not yet. Last I heard, he's going to have MRI today. Agree, I think he's very good and going to have a great career.

Mort (Rural Hall, NC)

I thought Jarrett looked decent last night. What are your thoughts about his chances to be a season opener starter.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:02 PM)

Again, I think LaFell's going to be No. 2. Coaches don't base it all on one preseason game. Camp practices and minicamps also factor in heavily.

Mitch (Boston)

I saw highlights of last nights game between the ravens and the panthers. Clausen looked very good, but Moore did not. Do you think Clausen can win the starting job

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:04 PM)

Not yet. Didn't think Moore was horrible. Clausen did well, but wasn't perfect. Unless Moore is horrible rest of preseason and Clausen is great, the opening day job is Moore's. That's been their plan all along. Now, if Moore gets into regular season and struggles, then you could see a switch. But it's not even near that point yet.

Taylor (Florence, SC)

Do you think Carolina should pass to their tight ends more to help with the receiving game?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:05 PM)

Not sure any of those TEs are big-time threats. If anything, I'd use a slot receiver more. I think that could help that offense.

Dillion (SC)

Any chance that the streak of nobody repeating in the NFC South ends this year?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:06 PM)

Sure, Saints are certainly capable of repeating. Time will tell.

Bill (Laplace, LA)

Hey Pat, we know the NFC East is going to be rated as the best in the NFC, but the South will be better in my opinion. I see the Saints and Falcons as playoff locks, and Carolina could be right there also. What are your thoughts?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:07 PM)

Bill, you know I always think NFC South is best!!! Seriously, I'm pretty much with you. I don't like to call anybody a lock. But Saints and Falcons certainly look like legitmate contenders. Carolina can be right in there too if some of the young guys step up.

George (England)

Based on your observations, who do you think is set to partner Dunta Robinson at CB, week 1?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:09 PM)

My guess is Owens, with Grimes as the nickel.

Rick (Charlotte,NC)

Did Greg Hardy look good or what?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:09 PM)

Sure did.

Mark H (Greensboro, NC)

If Hardy has another game like last night, how long will it be before he gets a shot with the ones?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:10 PM)

Maybe not long at all. They've been high on him throughout camp. This is a situation where they're throwing a lot of guys out there and seeing who rises up. So far, Hardy's doing his part.

Clay (Charlotte)

Three false starts from Gross cause for concern or just an aberration?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:11 PM)

That would be my guess. He's too good to do that in regular season -- and never really has done much of that.

Mark H (Greensboro, NC)

About the TE's, I think Rosario or Barnidge on a pass heavy offense would put up good numbers. Look at what Wiggins did after he left Carolina for Minnesota.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:12 PM)

Point taken. But do you really see John Fox suddenly throwing to the TE a lot? I mean, he's never really done it.

Michael (TAMPA)

Pat,Bucs Brass have said this past week that they only plan on playing Freeman the first series even if its a 3 and out... Why are they conserving this guy most of the other starting qbs in the league at least play most of the first quarter... I feel like freeman can use as much work with these new young players as possible... what are the bucs thinking on this one??

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:13 PM)

Not sure exactly. But, with Penn just getting back into things, maybe it's a good idea not to leave Freeman out there too long. You get him hurt in the preseason and it would be a disaster.

Mark H (Greensboro, NC)

No, I haven't, but I'm defending the players not the system ;)

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:14 PM)

Gotcha. In a different system, any of those guys could put up good numbers. Like you said, Wiggins proved that point.

Clay (Charlotte)

Just a sprain for Brayton?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:16 PM)

Don't know yet. If that's all it is, I'd sit him for rest of preseason games. You know what you've got in him and he knows what he's doing. Give the young guys more reps.

CC (Atlanta)

Hardy was great at Ole Miss... when healthy. Problem is that was almost never. Hard to imagine a guy that couldn't hold up in the SEC will do so in the NFL. Just watch... he is a tease.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:16 PM)

Point taken. We'll see. As I've been saying, it's only one preseason game.

CC (Atlanta)

Excluding the QBs, name the player on each NFCS team that is the most indispensable.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:17 PM)

Have you been talking to Bristol??? We've got a project coming up on that pretty soon, so I can't reveal my answer right now.

Mark H (Greensboro, NC)

I have read and heard a lot of fans calling Armanti Edwards a bust. That's crazy in my opinion. NFL WR is one of the hardest positions for college WR to adjust to....Edwards is moving to WR in the NFL. Steve Smith didn't look like a Pro Bowl receiver in his first preseason game either (not saying AE is going to be the next Smitty)

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:19 PM)

A bust??? Who's saying that? Again, it's one preseason game. Panthers have said all along, he's a work in progress and it's going to take some time. He's making a major position move, but he's got all sorts of potential. You want to talk busts, you can use that one on Dexter Jackson. But let's not even go anywhere near there on Edwards at this point.

Robert (Wilmington, NC)

How worried should I be that the "brilliant" decision to let Kasay's holder go to save a few pennies could be the difference between 8-8 and a WC berth?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:21 PM)

You talking holder or snapper? Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Baker the holder on the play last night and hasn't he been the holder?

Michael (TAMPA)

Josh Johnson is a great athlete hes got too much skill to be sitting on the bench all year... do you see him getting time on the field at WR or in the Wildcat this year??

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:22 PM)

Raheem has hinted at it, so it wouldn't surprise me -- Wildcat that is. Not WR, unless he's been getting some secret work there.

Ryan (Tampa)

Pat you had to pull the Dexter Jackson card? Come on man, we are embarrassed enough already as I am sure you are too haha.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:23 PM)

Hey, he's Carolina's problem now. And I used that not really as a knock on Tampa Bay. More on the people who are just assuming Edwards will be the next Jackson just because they're from App State

Mark H (Greensboro, NC)

Baker has been the holder the past few years. I think there was a Ray Finkle moment (laces out Dan!!).

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:24 PM)

That's what I thought. Thank you.

William B. (Nassau, The Bahamas)

Rest in peace, Dave Dixon. The driving force in creating the New Orleans Saints, the Superdome, and the USFL. Glad he lived long enough to see what many thought would never happen.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:25 PM)

I'm with you on that. I was a USFL fan. Still have the card set from their initial season. One of favorite stories I ever did was a look back at USFL for a magazine a few years back. Got to sit down with the great Sam Mills to talk USFL a few months before he passed. One of my best memories in this business.

Mort (Rural Hall, NC)

If in fact Fox is gone next year, does Meeks make sense as his replacement? Makes sense to me because he's a good defensive coach, and the defensive side of the roster is already tailored for his style. It would be a way to achieve continuity while not having to pay the kind of money Fox will command.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:26 PM)

Let's wait to see what happens on labor situation before we even go down that road.

Robert (Wilmington, NC)

Sorry yes I mean the snapper.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:27 PM)

That was after the 2008 season when they let Kyle go. He was with New Orleans all last year.

Dave (Tampa)

What one player would you say was the turning point from the horrible Buc teams from the 80's to a competitive, eventually chamionship, team? Hardy Nickerson?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:29 PM)

Hardy was very good, but, no, I wouldn't put him in that category. If we're talking only players here, the ONLY answer is Derrick Brooks. The only runner-up is Warren Sapp. After that, there were some other guys that were very important and you can argue about how you rank them. But I think 1 and 2 are very clear.

CC (Atlanta)

I don't get you and others saying the Panthers are a 8-10 win team. That D looks weak and I just can't see Moore carrying them. The running game is solid but teams will take that away. I see 5-6 wins in Charlotte.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:31 PM)

Fox has never had that bad a record. He's still got Smith, Gross, Gamble, Beason, D. Williams, Stewart, Otah and Kalil. That's a lot of core players. That's why I can't see them being flat-out bad. Yes, there are definitely a lot of questions, but I think they'll be competitive.

Ryan (Tampa)

I understand Pat but why can't the Bucs hire some better scouts? I know this is different sport but same town, the Rays have scouts who pick guys that look guaranteed to do something in the league. Just because its a different sport can't make researching and picking the right guy that much harder can it?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:32 PM)

Think the Bucs have made some moves in that department. Plus, Rays were getting very high picks for a long time. Bucs didn't really have that luxury for most of last decade. Plus, they traded away lots of first-round picks for Keyshawn and Gruden

Bill (Laplace, LA)

Pat, I don't want to tell you how to do your job, but now that football season is here, can we not discuss or even mention the labor situation until after the Super Bowl?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:33 PM)

Bill, I'd actually prefer it that way. But it is a reality.

Tim (TAMPA)

With Caddillac locked in as the starter... how much Derrick Ward are we going to see in the preseason??

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:34 PM)

Wouldn't expect a lot right now. He's having a decent camp, but still has to get coaches to really warm up to him.

Clay (Charlotte)

Smitty going to be ready for Week 1?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:34 PM)

All indications, yep.

Sharell (NCFalconFan)

Any thoughts on Jerious Norwood? Can not stay healthy. To all Panther fans, be careful what you wish for, you can very well get Cowher or you can get an unproven coach who has no idea what he's doing: Think PETRINO!!!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:35 PM)

Would love to see Norwood healthy over an entire season to see what he could do. But not sure we'll ever see it.

Vinnie (ATL)

I recently attended a Falcons practice. Mike Peterson seemed to be more of a tutorial role while Lofton took the leadership role. Will Peterson's role be limited this fall?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:37 PM)

Peterson was out with an injury while I was there. Lofton's definitely emerging as leader. But I wouldn't simply write Peterson off just yet -- if he's healthy.

CC (Atlanta)

Pat -- Chris Gamble is not very good. If he's a core player than they're worse than you think.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:37 PM)

Well, we disagree there.

Brett (ORLANDO (at work))

Barret Ruud made some comments about his lack of a contract going in to this season and the heavty sum that Penn got... Is his unhappiness going to be a problem in the locker room this season?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:39 PM)

Ruud's a good locker-room guy and he's handled this well for a long time. I don't like to take sides in negotations and we don't know exactly what's being discussed. But I think it's important for Bucs to have him happy.

George (England)

As Babineaux has only been suspended for one game, do you feel the Corey Peters pick was justified at all, or do you thin that Peria still needs some insurance?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:40 PM)

Think it was a good pick. He's actually been better so far than Falcons expected. Can't have enough good DTs in this league. Think you'll see Falcons rotating all their d-linemen very heavily this year.

Sharell (NCFaclonFan)

Why is CC dominating the "chat".....I agree with you PY, Fox ALWAYS have his team ready to play. PY, I am assuming you will be in NO on opening night?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:41 PM)

I think that's a safe assumption. Need to get working on travel sked soon, but I think New Orleans for the Thursday night game and on to Pittsburgh for Sunday game with Falcons.

Mike (San Francisco)

Pat, tell us outsiders why everyone seems to think the Falcons are a significantly better team than the one that had a middle of the road offense and defense last year?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:42 PM)

Michael Turner's healthy. Matt Ryan's healthy. Dunta Robinson and Sean Weatherspoon will help the defense.

William B. (Nassau, The Bahamas)

Any insight about Meachem's injury? Coach Payton has been tight lipped. Could it be more than what we've been told?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:43 PM)

He was moving around pretty well with rehab stuff when I was there. Don't know of any setbacks. Maybe they're just being conservative.

Chris (Fairfax, VA)

the new madden has weems returning kick-offs for the falcons. Is this realistic for the regular season?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:44 PM)

It's at least possible. He was one of a bunch of guys working there when I was in Flowery Branch.

Mark H (Greensboro, NC)

What did you think of Dan Connor last night? I know you had to watch him since he is Penn State's all time career leader in tackles ;)

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:45 PM)

Tell you the truth, I didn't notice anything particularly good or bad from him.

CC (Atlanta)

Not my fault I ask such riveting questions! Word is Jamal Anderson is a having a great camp. Is that a load of bull or what?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:46 PM)

I asked Mike Smith that face to face and he said it is true. But I think you might see Anderson playing more inside than outside. Not expecting him to suddenly become a Pro Bowler, but I think he might be a bit of a factor this year.

Robert J. (Myrtle Beach)

Let me help CC on the Panthers. Under Fox they have never lost more than 9. Last season, they were 8-8, 4-1 under Moore and beat every divisional opponent once. Last year they lost at least 2 games because of Delhomme's INTs (he's gone). Last year they had a rash of injured DTs early and it was year 1 under Meeks. This year they have a full second year under their belt and a renewed, healthier run stopping group. Why wouldn't anyone think 8-10 wins is the likely scenerio?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:47 PM)

Just tossing this one out for Robert, who has some good points.

Will (New Orleans/LA)

have the Saints given any indication as to who will replace Lynell Hamilton yet? Who do you think looked better last night, PJ Hill or Chris Ivory?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:48 PM)

Think they'll be keeping close eye on waiver wire when rosters are cut down. They might be able to find someone decent there.

Will (New Orleans/LA)

Did Jonathan Casillas play his way to a starting job last night? he looked like the only Saint who could tackle

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:49 PM)

Sounds that way from what I've read. Haven't been able to watch the game yet. But that's what it sounds like.

Chad (Las Vegas)

What's holding up your NFCS predictions? Division is pretty easy to predict this year. 1. Saints 2. Falcons 3. Panthers 4. Bucs. Not to say it will play out that way but the outlook is pretty clear there. The only thing I can see happening is Carolina and Atlanta flipping spots.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:51 PM)

Chad, no argument with your thoughts. We'll do a predictions package right before the start of the season and that's when we're supposed to make our predictions. I'm not going to waste a lot of time on doing that now because my thoughts on predictions is that they really don't mean all that much.

William B. (Nassau, The Bahamas)

Not many Saints fans here today. Relax Who Dat Nation, it's preseason!!! It's not the end of the world. Pat, are you going to catch any exciting preseason games (yawn)?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:53 PM)

William, barring major news, the only two preseason games I'll be at will be Tampa's two home games. I'll catch the others on t.v. I agree with you about preseason games.

Joel (Stone Mountain, GA)

Gotta go back to Sean Payton's call for an offside kickoff after halftime of the Supebowl. Big brass ones, I must say. It worked out great but I still think that is an ill advised call in the biggest game of the year. I think the crazy play calls and lucky results will come to an end this year. I see the Saints having a few really bad games having to come from behind from early mistakes. Agree or will the luck continue?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:54 PM)

Joel's got a point here. Prior to last year, I sometimes thought Payton out-thought himself or took too many chances. Can't argue with what it did last year, though.

David (New York)

Any chance the Falcons make a bid for Aaron Schobel?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:55 PM)

I know that's popular in fan circles. But I haven't been able to sense any genuine interest from within the Falcons.

Michael (Orlando)

I like Geno Hayes and Barrett Ruud... but is this Quincy Black guy really as good as Raheem makes him out to be??

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:56 PM)

From what I've seen from Quincy in camp and even minicamp and what I've heard from people that know more than me, yes. They are very high on him.

Will (New Orleans/LA)

Robert Meachem and Darren Sharper still haven't suited up for a single practice, what are the odds that one of these guys doesn't make the final roster in New Orleans?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:58 PM)

Not sure on Meachem. But I wouldn't be surprised if Sharper opens season on PUP list.

Sharell (NCFalconFan)

PY, JPW pass Chris Redman on depth chart by end of season?CC: Riveting? I think NOT :-).

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:59 PM)

Nah, don't think that's going to happen. JPW is a project at best. They want a veteran they can plug in if something happens to Ryan for the short term. Know that's not the flashy answer, but I think it's the truth.

Vinnie (ATL)

Do the Falcons look more athletic and faster to you? With returning players from injury and another draft, I got that sense at the practice I attended.

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:00 PM)

Faster, definitely. Dimitroff told me that was one of the goals of the offseason, particularly on defense.

CC (Atlanta)

Which NFCS coach has the best sense of humor?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:03 PM)

You know what, I'm going to say Fox. Raheem, Smith and Payton are pretty much what you see in interviews. When cameras go off and Fox is relaxed, he's got a great sense of humor. Wish he was like that all the time. All right, great chat and very classy and smart questions from all. Far as I know right now, we'll do it again next Friday. I'm going to jump into the last day of Training Camp Chatter later this afternoon. Keep an eye on NFCS Blog for an announcement once I get a time locked up and feel free to join me over there. Thanks again.
