Chat with Keith Law

Klaw
  (1:07 PM)

Sorry I'm late. Feels like I've been living in a city with no children in it.

Dan (Des Moines)

Wil Myers or Bryce Harper? How about if Myers is a C and Harper an OF?

Klaw
  (1:07 PM)

Harper. Harper.

Robert (Madison, WI)

You weren't much of a fan of Dayan Viciedo before the season. Have you seen anything this year that changes your opinion?

Klaw
  (1:07 PM)

Nope.

Jonathan (New York)

Hi Keith. Is Jeremy Hellickson already the Rays second-best starter? Or, if not quite yet, will he be in 2011? Thanks.

Klaw
  (1:08 PM)

Unless you're assuming Garza's gone, I can't see how you'd argue that for 2011.

Ron (Montana)

Just reading your Area Codes report - Tilson seem like a real shot to be a first rounder?

Klaw
  (1:10 PM)

I think so, and so did the scouts I talked to in Long Beach. (The article is at http://klaw.me/bGr0GI) Centerfielder who can run, throw, hit, and looks like he'll have some pop? I'll take two.

Klaw
  (1:10 PM)

Dear chat software: This is not the day to screw with me. Thanks. Klaw

Mike (San Diego)

How much value do you put on experience for a team? It looked like the Reds had a bit of a "deer in the headlights" look in this past series.

Klaw
  (1:10 PM)

Zero value. Completely overplayed by clueless media every second half and postseason.

Drew (Citi, NY)

If i dont get a question answered today, i am going to punch my father in law in the face

Klaw
  (1:11 PM)

Better idea: Call him a (female dog) and you'll get off with a fine!

Jake (NY)

Who would you choose for Cy Young Wainwright or Johnson?

Klaw
  (1:12 PM)

Johnson or Halladay. Probably Doc, Johnson, Wainwright in that order right now.

Wins and RBI (1980's)

Uh oh. Klaw is mad today, we better get out of here before he sees us.

Klaw
  (1:13 PM)

That's OK, wOBA is here to kick your ...

Jon (DC)

Is AJ Cole just a back up plan for the Nats in case they can't sign Harper... take some of the "Harper money" and offer it to Cole?

Klaw
  (1:13 PM)

No, they have legitimate interest in signing him. If they get him, Harper (they will), Solis, and Ray signed, that's a really good haul.

Trader J (Indy)

Thoughts on Top Chef last night?

Klaw
  (1:14 PM)

Before I answer this, how many people have it DVR'd? Don't want to spoil it for everyone.

Shane (Knoxville)

Keith, I've been hearing on ESPN alot that David Price is the AL Cy "front runner". Hands down, its gotta be Cliff Lee right? His K/BB alone should be enough.

Klaw
  (1:14 PM)

I'd vote Lee over Price.

Chris (DC)

You can answer this though, what happened to the pea puree?

Klaw
  (1:15 PM)

Colicchio tweeted (twote?) last night that three other contestants contacted him to say they saw Alex making his own pea puree. I think that ends the story.

James (Boston)

What was your reaction to the Salty trade to the Sox and the quick call up for him? Did the rangers give one away there?

Klaw
  (1:16 PM)

The kid had the yips, and it's not like he's ever hit in the majors. It almost certainly was never going to click for him in Texas, and a guy like that has next to no trade value.

Jason (St Louis)

So if Ubaldo Jimenez gets to 24 wins based solely on his ridiculous run support and wins the CY, I'm guessing you won't be a happy camper?

Klaw
  (1:16 PM)

On the contrary, stupid media tricks are good for business.

Ian (Pittsburgh)

Who is the favorite to sign Luis Heredia these days?

Klaw
  (1:18 PM)

Jorge Arangure tweeted this morning about the mess down there - Heredia's mother is challenging the legitimacy of the contract he signed with a pro team in Mexico, which could hold things up for a while and I would guess lead some teams to spend their international budget elsewhere.

Jay (Baltimore)

With Chris Sale already in the bigs, isn't that reason enough to sign as quickly as possible if you're a college grad, why hold out so long? Should Dan Klein have signed by now, he could be in the bullpen to finish out like Sale.

Klaw
  (1:19 PM)

I agree in the general case - many college players would do better to sign fast and get some reps in low-A/short-season. Michael Choice should have signed immediately. Klein is a good example too. Austin Wates ... why the heck hasn't he signed? He needs to find a position; tough to do that sitting on your couch. But college starters who've had long spring seasons do well to take some time off, and the system doesn't really reward most HS kids who sign early. I hope the next CBA moves the signing deadline up - there's sentiment on both sides to do that. No one enjoys the current process and no one sees moving the deadline up affecting bonus amounts.

John (Lexington, KY)

If Ubaldo wins, you will naturally become an accused Rockie hater.

Klaw
  (1:20 PM)

It would be like coming full circle.

MArgo (Evanston)

Last week you said Ryno isn't qualified for the Cubs job. Who would you hire if you were the GM?

Klaw
  (1:21 PM)

That's not exactly what I said. What I said is that the famous guy isn't necessarily the most qualified guy. And, to add to that, the guy who's most vocally campaigning for the job isn't necessarily the most qualified guy.

John (Lexington, KY)

Thoughts on Cito sac bunting in the first inning yesterday? Does he realize what kind of offense he has?

Klaw
  (1:22 PM)

Just count the days.

chris (Mesa Az)

I know you are not the biggest Daniel Hudson but hes been very good for the dbacks. Are you not a fan because of his stuff or his mechanics?

Klaw
  (1:23 PM)

Stuff and delivery. Watched a little of him last night - Brewers are an extremely strikeout-prone lineup and I didn't see any real put-away pitch there from Hudson.

Zack (CT)

Another question about the deadline, are there actually any deals that go in at the last minute? I know Alvarez was one, but how often does that occur? Or is the day more of a symbolic thing where team announces over slot deals?

Klaw
  (1:24 PM)

Yes, happens every year - MLB ends up processing them beyond midnight.

Oscar (Los Angeles)

I've always wondered how you feel about "pitching from the stretch". Is it taken into consideration at all when you evaluate pitchers?

Klaw
  (1:25 PM)

Yes - very important to see how velocity and command change from the stretch.

Jamie (spartanburg SC) [via mobile]

Is there still a chance the Rockies sign K Parker?

Klaw
  (1:27 PM)

Yes, but it would be to a two-sport contract that allows him to continue playing football.

Jay (Baltimore)

Thanks for the great answer on Sale and Klein. Seems to make sense, wish they'd fix some of these issues, seems like guys hold out for an extra $50K sometimes.

Klaw
  (1:28 PM)

For a lot of agents, especially newer guys or guys with few or no big leaguers, the amount of the signing bonus is critical to demonstrating their value to their clients. ("I got you an extra $50K!") The experienced agents will do what their clients want but realize the value comes from getting guys to the big leagues and to arbitration - not to mention the bigger commissions.

Rich (NYC)

Would the Giants be rushing Belt if they brought him up in September?

Klaw
  (1:30 PM)

That's pretty aggressive, but it might be justifiable given their big league situation. I just worry about a guy in his first year with a new stance, and with very little experience facing upper-level pitching, coming up to the majors and facing major league pitching in a pennant race.

Dave (Cincinnati)

The stupidity of Brandon Phillips' comments aside, isn't he right? Don't the Cardinals "complain" more than any other team? (other than the Reds complaining about their complaining, perhaps?)

Klaw
  (1:30 PM)

I can't get past the language. It was beyond inappropriate. The truth value of the underlying message becomes irrelevant.

Jon (Jacksonville, Florida)

Keith, Simon Castro or Tillman?

Klaw
  (1:30 PM)

Tillman.

Matt (MA)

Will Bubba Starling have to turn down more then Casey Kelly to go play football/baseball at Nebraska?

Klaw
  (1:31 PM)

Yes.

Jon (DC)

Better two way prospect: Bubba Starling or Casey Kelly (prior to signing).

Klaw
  (1:31 PM)

Starling - much better bat potential right now. Kelly was a good defensive shortstop who was a long-term project with the bat. Starling needs some mechanical tweaks at the plate but I don't think they're major.

Matt (NYC)

Klaw, speaking about Cy voting, do you know if you will be able to vote again this year? When do they let you know?

Klaw
  (1:35 PM)

I've got NL Manager of the Year. I'll talk to front office execs for that one - I don't think there's a reliable statistical measure for managerial performance.

J. (Milwaukee)

Please Keith! Tell me there is young pitching coming through the Brewer's system in the next couple of years!!

Klaw
  (1:35 PM)

Some serious power arms in the AA rotation, although not all project as starters. Should see those guys start to show up in the major league pen in 2011.

Jon (DC)

Have you had a chance to see JP Ramirez this year? And is he a potential Top 100 prospect at some point? Thanks.

Klaw
  (1:36 PM)

The Nationals' prospect? Not a potential top 100 prospect. No above-average tools. Smaller guy limited to left field.

Chris (Atlanta, GA)

Keith in your opinion how does Anthony Rendon's latest injury effect his draft status? Thanks.

Klaw
  (1:38 PM)

If he's back healthy for opening day in February, it probably won't affect it at all, although I do think whoever drafts 1-1 will want to have their doctors spend extra time on his medicals.

Eddie (NV)

How does the awards voting work? Do they randomly pick a number of BBWAA members for each one each season?

Klaw
  (1:38 PM)

Yes but there's also an attempt to get two voters from each city in that league. Then they backfill with national guys like me.

JP (ATL)

Are the Braves good enough to hold off the Phillies?

Klaw
  (1:39 PM)

I don't think so, not without Chipper.

Todd (Augusta, GA)

Back to Brandon Belt. Why wasn't he on anyone's radar (top 100 lists) before the season. Is his performance fluky?

Klaw
  (1:39 PM)

Completely changed his stance this spring. He's not the same player he was last summer.

david (atl)

Being that he was the main cog in the vazquez trade, how has vizcaino done this yr? Where would you rank him-top 50?

Klaw
  (1:43 PM)

I think he was on my last top 25 update, and a few hours later hit the DL with elbow soreness. A top 50 guy for sure if he's healthy.

Jeremy (Boston)

Regardless of what you actually get to vote on, will you be doing analysis of what your votes would have been for all the awards (MVP, CY, ROY)?

Klaw
  (1:43 PM)

Always.

Anthony Gose (TOR)

Why are the Jays so enamored with me? And how to you pronounce my last name?

Klaw
  (1:43 PM)

"Goes." Pretty strong tool set, plus run, plus arm, not sure if they have a toolsier hitter in their system.

Geoff (Dallas, TX)

Hey Keith, your cold and snarky comments make the Dallas heat tolerable. Was the Brett Wallace trade to the Astros a prelude to moving Snider and Lind to DH/1B? It seems like a rather odd trade to me for the Jays.

Klaw
  (1:45 PM)

I assume so.

Lars Anderson (Pawtucket)

Why have scouts been so enarmored with me? I had one good season in Lancaster and have been mediocre since.

Klaw
  (1:45 PM)

Good swing and a great approach in high school and low minors for a young player. But yes, two years of mostly bad performance has just about killed that.

Josh (Lincoln, NE)

Over/under on people who think your "I would have voted this way" column constitutes an actual ballot: 15. What ya got?

Klaw
  (1:48 PM)

Add a zero to the end.

Jesse (Storrs, CT)

How did a cold weather New England school such as UConn create such a competitive D-1 team? And do you think they will have any other players drafted in the first 4-5 rounds next year besides Barnes and Springer?

Klaw
  (1:49 PM)

Combination of luck (having two guys like that in state) and good recruiting (retaining them, keeping Springer away from the Twins in the '08 draft). They'll have a few other guys drafted in that range next year but no one else in the 1st or 2nd.

Sam (Chicago)

Please say the Cubs have some hope coming up through the system? It seems like all of our hyped young guys are already up and other than Castro not very good.

Klaw
  (1:50 PM)

Quite a bit, actually. The Jacksons, Lee, Archer, Carpenter - not all stars but definitely some talent still in that system.

Dave (Tor)

Lorenzo Cain - starting CF for Milwaukee in 2011?

Klaw
  (1:51 PM)

I hope so. Chance to hit and be an above-average glove in CF.

Howie (Seattle)

In regards to Aroyds Vizcaino, i believe he is on the shelf with a torn ligament. Don't think it's TJ surgery for him, but also don't think it's good. This is second-hand from RAB, so don't take that to the bank.

Klaw
  (1:51 PM)

No, that's correct, but my point is that he's not having surgery (yet) and therefore isn't out for 12-14 months.

a D u B (Newps, Ca)

Could Christian Friedrich be in the Rockies 2011 rotation? Don't you think Chacin should be in the rotation right now?

Klaw
  (1:53 PM)

Could Friedrich? Yes, but he's missed time this year with a sore elbow and then a contusion (he got hit by a LD in mid July), and his walk rate remains a little high. Chacin yes.

Jamie (Canada)

Please rank Britton, Minor, Scheppers...thanks!

Klaw
  (1:54 PM)

Just in that order, 1-2-3, because of the question over whether Scheppers can handle a 200 inning workload.

Andrew (NH)

Who will have the better career Rizzo or Lars?

Klaw
  (1:54 PM)

At this point Rizzo is clearly the better prospect for me.

Andy (CT)

What abour Jarrod Parker. Did have surgery, but was still in your pre-season top 50. Does Arodys garner the same optimism?

Klaw
  (1:55 PM)

Parker had better stuff pre-surgery.

Matt (IN )

Hey Klaw, when you grill what do you go with, charcoal or gas?

Klaw
  (1:56 PM)

Charcoal.

Peter (Seattle)

Which current hitter would you compare Jesus Montero to? If he goes to a different team any chance he stays behind the plate?

Klaw
  (1:57 PM)

Physically and in his swing, he reminds me of Frank Thomas. And I know that's an insane comp to put on a guy, but I don't think that's out of the question as an optimistic long-term projection.

CC (Atlanta)

You dogged the Braves pretty good for taking Minor that high. Has your opinion changed or is he still a marginal prospect in your view?

Klaw
  (1:57 PM)

He started throwing substantially harder this year. I don't know anyone who foresaw that. I certainly didn't - everyone saw his value as a guy who'd move quickly, but had no projection. Even 90-93 every fifth day exceeds my expectations for his velocity.

Adam (Illinois)

Based on the language that is used on the field every day I'm surprised you'd have such a problem with a player using a relatively minor term in the media. Also comparing that to some current managers that say much worse things in the media.

Klaw
  (2:00 PM)

A "minor" term? In what universe?

Alan (Portland)

Mind ranking these guys for me, Keith? -- Minor, Britton, Pineda. Are they all potential No. 2s?

Klaw
  (2:00 PM)

Pineda, Britton, Minor.

Adam (San Francisco)

Has Chris Johnson thrust himself into the NL ROY race, or will the media say that his sample size is too small? I thought Posey was going to run away with it, but no more.

Klaw
  (2:01 PM)

His sample size is too small, and it's a stone fluke. And even at that he's not close to Posey.

Cory (Columbus)

With Teheran's monster year, he's a top 10 overall prospect next year right? and could he be making a minor-like appearance this time next year, or is it still too soon?

Klaw
  (2:01 PM)

Yes, and yes.

J. Cocktostoan (CA)

Keith--how much scouting value can be derived from summer collegiate league performance, and which of the leagues ranks second behind Cape Cod? Also, does participation on Team USA enhance a player's development. Thanks.

Klaw
  (2:02 PM)

From the stats? Next to nothing. I'd probably put Northwoods League second, at least for prospects. Team USA is more about pride and prestige, since the best competition they face all summer is themselves during the trials.

Danny (Philly)

Are Singleton, Cosart, May, and Colvin all Top 100 guys for next year?

Klaw
  (2:03 PM)

Cosart absolutely. The other three are possibilities, although the hype on Singleton has faded with his performance.

Jason (Nashville, TN)

Is it possible the Braves saw something in Minor they thought they could correct? Maybe improve is a better word?

Klaw
  (2:05 PM)

It is possible, although I find it telling that post-draft their guys never said anything (not just to me, but within the industry) about thinking he'd add velo - they loved his polish and ability to get to the majors fast, rating his command very highly. I solicited a ton of opinions on him pre- and post-draft last year and didn't hear from anyone that they thought he'd add velo.

Jeff (Ann Arbor)

Speaking of Minor, I suggested at the deadline that the Braves deal him to fill a need - basically selling high - and you agreed. Acknowleding that every player is tradeable, do you still feel that dealing him would be "selling high"? Thanks.

Klaw
  (2:06 PM)

Any time a player sees his velocity jump up when it wasn't expected, I have some degree of doubt whether it will continue. And Minor has slipped back from touching 95 earlier in the year to more 90-93 now.

Taz (San Jose, CA)

KLAW, Yankee prospects to keep an eye on besides Montero. Thanks.

Klaw
  (2:07 PM)

Most exciting guys are Betances, Brackman (I don't want to say he's back ... but he might be), and Heathcott. JR Murphy's a long-term guy, but with Romine's hot start fading out I think some hype might shift over to him as the Yanks' potential C of the future.

Dan (DC)

I realize this 8-1 start with Showalter is just smoke and mirrors, but I'm still allowed to enjoy it, right?

Klaw
  (2:08 PM)

Of course - and I do think Showalter will make a tangible difference over the next few years.

mymrbig (New Orleans)

Any explanation for the rise & fall of the non-Cape leagues? Seems like 10-15 years ago, Alaska was a clear 2nd and Northwoods was just getting its feet wet. Now there are tons of leagues and its hard to figure out (for a non-insider) which ones are the best (non-Cape)!

Klaw
  (2:08 PM)

Cape Cod reached the tipping point and now nearly every top prospect goes there; not enough top guys left over to make any single league a strong competitor. Alaska killed itself with lack of organization.

JAYPERS (IL)

Re: Yanks to keep an eye on. How about Gary Sanchez?

Klaw
  (2:09 PM)

Yes, thanks, forgot him. That's a pretty good line of catching prospects - even if Romine's just a fringe starter, that's three catchers who project as that or better in their system.

Todd (Miami)

Do you think Smoak becomes the hitter we all thought he would be?

Klaw
  (2:10 PM)

Yes. But I admit I'm puzzled by what happened to him this summer.

James (NJ)

Brackman had a BB9 over 6 last year, this year it's in the mid-2s, is that normal recovery from TJS? Or did he improve mechanics?

Klaw
  (2:10 PM)

Command is the last thing to come back.

Tim (Saratoga, CA)

Chipper done for his career? And can the Braves still win the wild card without him?

Klaw
  (2:11 PM)

I'm guessing yes but I have no inside knowledge there. HOFer for sure. I think their playoff probability just plunged. WC could come from the Central now.

Blake (York, PA)

Please rank in order: Matusz-Tillman-Britton-Arrieta-Gerrit Cole

Klaw
  (2:11 PM)

I see what you did there. Cole, Matusz, Britton, Tillman, Arrieta.

steve (pa)

evaluation of kalish?

Klaw
  (2:12 PM)

Solid-average regular, chance to be above-average, very slight chance to be better.

Tommy (NYC)

Been listening to Arcade Fire lately? What do you think of their new album?

Klaw
  (2:12 PM)

Love it. Review coming later today on the dish.

Brian (Philly)

And while you are discussing Phillies guys, would either Harold Garcia or Matt Rizzotti come close to the top 100?

Klaw
  (2:13 PM)

Probably not - May/Colvin are well ahead of those two for me. For what it's worth, I have little idea of what the back half of the top 100 might look like right now. These are really just guesses.

Ryan (San Diego)

The WC is coming from the West or the East dude...get it straight

Klaw
  (2:14 PM)

I'm looking at the Cards' schedule the rest of the way ... I see a lot of Pittsburgh, Houston, Milwaukee, and the Cubs.

Bob Rooney (The Burg)

Keith, what do you think of KISS? Saw them over the weekend and they put on an incredible show!

Klaw
  (2:15 PM)

Apparently now I'm getting chat questions from 1977.

Bill (Rockville)

Does a healthy Rendon = Longoria?

Klaw
  (2:16 PM)

They're really not similar in any way but in position.

Stanley (Duluth, MN)

KLAW--the wife got me Ticket to Ride for the birthday. Many thanks for the recommendation. Now to baseball. Do you think that Thome will get into the HOF with over 90% of the vote? What if he gets to 600 next year?

Klaw
  (2:16 PM)

He'll get in. The percentage is irrelevant - there are no tiers of HOFers.

Chris (Dallas, TX)

I never realized you were such a prude. Considering you can say (female dog) on network TV, I don't see how it's so bad.

Klaw
  (2:18 PM)

The problem here is that you're too dim to realize the connotations of the word, evidenced by your quick switch to personal insults. I'd be substantially less bothered if he'd called them MFs.

David (New York)

Can we stop reporting raw steal numbers? Shouldn't we be reporting them with a success rate? Yea, Vlad once stole 40, but he was caught 20 times that year. We don't just say how many hits a guy has.

Klaw
  (2:20 PM)

Just stop reading that stuff. Look up the player cards on BB-Ref or Fangraphs yourself and you will get worlds more info than you'll get on a typical game broadcast.

Jeff (Indianapolis)

When you note the Cardinals in the WC discussion, does that mean you think the Reds will finish on top of the Central ?

Klaw
  (2:20 PM)

Right now I'd put both teams in the playoffs. Order doesn't matter.

Dan (DC)

Would you vote for Gary Sheffield in the HOF? I just looked the other day, and he's 26th all time for times on base. I couldn't believe he was that high.

Klaw
  (2:20 PM)

Yes, no-doubter.

Jon (Ithaca)

I have no real "emotional investment" with any of these chefs this season as opposed to Mike, Bryan, and Santa Claus.

Klaw
  (2:21 PM)

I hear that, but at the same time, I wouldn't be as bothered by many viewers by an Angelo win. If he's the best, he's the best - arrogance doesn't make the food taste worse.

Chris (Dallas, TX)

Sarcasm font fail. I don't actually think you're a prude. Just a little surprised you'd be offended by a b-bomb.

Klaw
  (2:23 PM)

I have a better analogy: What if he called them a slur against gays (e.g., bundles of sticks)? My issue isn't that I think the Cardinals' feelings are hurt. It's that the word Phillips chose means a lot more than just "excessive complainers."

Tommy (NYC)

Matt Harvey's ETA to the bigs (assuming he signs)?

Klaw
  (2:23 PM)

That really depends on whether he's 2010 Matt Harvey or 2008-09 Matt Harvey. The former gets there in a year. The latter gets there in close to never.

dave (NYC)

KLaw, so what do you think of Singleton as a prospect. Maybe he was getting too much hype with his hot start but he is putting up very impressive numbers as an 18 year old in full season ball.

Klaw
  (2:24 PM)

I'm not sure how to interpret those numbers - it's like two separate seasons.

Bill (Westford, MA)

Did you check out the Area Code Games? Did the hyped kid from Mass (Connaughton) do anything to imporess you? He seems raw, think he can up his velo with a little coaching/polish?

Klaw
  (2:24 PM)

Yes, he's in my article today. Apparently he's interested in playing D1 hoops, though.

Logan (Maryland)

Best White Sox Prospect?

Klaw
  (2:25 PM)

Mitchell.

Jon (Ithaca)

I bought a share into a farm, so we get fresh produce every week. Unfortunately, that means we get an insane amount zucchini. We stir fry it, stuff it, and make bread out of it, but we're getting sick of those options. Any ideas?

Klaw
  (2:26 PM)

If you have a mandoline or similar slicer, slice long strips, salt and drain on each side, rinse, pat dry, brush with olive oil (or a vinaigrette) and re-salt, then grill about 3-4 minutes per side. Doesn't scale well, but you get this smoky-sweetness you can't replicate on a stove.

Chris D (Capital City)

Last night, the Twins' Glen Perkins hit Carlos Quentin twice, the second time in the knee, after Quentin had homered in the second inning. The ump immediately issued a warning, so the hands of the White Sox pitchers were tied. Now it will be allowed to fester. What are your feelings on such matters as "purpose pitches" and "retaliation," KLaw?

Klaw
  (2:27 PM)

As long as no one is throwing at anyone's head, I'd actually rather let the players handle this stuff than have the umpires attempt to divine intent and take away the inside corner.

Sean (Hudson)

Quick food question. I'm almost useless in the kitchen but was given lamb to cook. Any idiot proof recipes or suggestions?

Klaw
  (2:28 PM)

That's the one meat I don't really care for, but my one suggestion is do not cook it past medium.

Brian (Philly)

Thank you. Really just trying to figure out how depleted the Phillies system is.

Klaw
  (2:28 PM)

It's not that bad. If they end up light on my top 100 it's a reflection of how far away their best guys are, not a lack of talent. I like a lot of what Marti Wolever and his staff have done the last few years.

Sam (Chicago)

Darwin Barney is making his mlb debut today for the Cubs. Is he anything to get excited over?

Klaw
  (2:28 PM)

Not really.

Klaw
  (2:29 PM)

You guys are almost certainly setting the record for great yet unprintable questions.

larry (wisconsin)

how good or bad is corey hart's extension

Klaw
  (2:30 PM)

Bad. I don't like extending guys during career years anyway, but bad defensive corner outfielders into their 30s? Come on. Not to mention the potential logjam that creates around Lawrie/Weeks.

Filmore Slims (ATL)

Law, how was your one week break? I feel like the week after the trade deadline is like baseball writers winter break. Also who do you peg as teh highest upside Angels prospect outside Trout?

Klaw
  (2:31 PM)

No break for me. Fabio Martinez-Mesa.

S R (NYC)

I am glad you found Lost Cities, in my opinion a great game. I have recently gotten addicted to Settlers of Catan and was wondering what the next game I should get should be? Also, is Lucas Duda for real? What is his ceiling?

Klaw
  (2:33 PM)

Carcassonne. Duda is all bat, and it's not a quick bat - he's big, slow, and strong. I know he's played a lot of left but I think he's 1B only long-term.

Alan (St. Pete)

Tim Beckham's come on somewhat in the second half -- he's up over .290 since the break and drawing a good number of walks -- but overall he's still gotta be one of the minors' biggest disappointments. I don't remember him being considered an overdraft at the time, so what exactly did everyone miss? Or was it just one of those things?

Less advanced as a hitter than everyone thought.

Matt (DC)

Keith, can I get your take on Jackie Bradley Jr.? Is he a guy that could ultimately develop power or does his value come from OBP and fielding ability?

Klaw
  (2:33 PM)

He'll hit for power. I'd be very surprised if he didn't.

John (LA)

What is the correct pronuciation of turbot, the fish?

Klaw
  (2:34 PM)

Pretty sure you're supposed to pronounce the final "t" - it's not a French word - but "turbo" is going to become the accepted pronunciation soon enough.

Bob (Oakland)

Looking at the A's minor league stat page, I see that Grant Green had a rediculous amount of errors this year. Is he a SS long-term?

Klaw
  (2:35 PM)

I lean against him staying at SS, but would not rule it out - he's very athletic and minor league error totals aren't very indicative of long-term potential.

Joe (My Parents' House)

Klaw, thanks for doing the chats. Could you recommend a good quality page turner? I start law school in a week, and am gonna need something to occupy me on the ride up to DC from FL. Nothing too taxing, though-- again, I start law school in a week.

Klaw
  (2:36 PM)

The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. I don't think that's taxing.

Matt (Pittsburgh)

Do any of the Pirates starters in AA project as major league starters? I am talking about Morris, Owens, or Locke.

Klaw
  (2:36 PM)

Morris might. Would have been nice to see him throw more than ONE PITCH at the Futures Game.

Billy (Toronto)

What's your take on development strides in the Jays org since AA has taken over? Both at the ML level and minors

Klaw
  (2:37 PM)

Lot of progress. Better decision-making, better process, no more trades from emotion. Heard this weekend they were involved in every trade conversation at the deadline.

Danny (Philly)

Hey KLAW thanks for the extended chat. Can you tell me what the upside is for Sabastian Valle?

Klaw
  (2:40 PM)

Chance to be a solid-average everyday catcher, but the .294 OBP isn't a good sign. You don't have to be a big walker to be an everyday catcher in the majors, but more than one a week would be nice - not to mention what it says about his overall approach.

Quentin (New York)

I'm about to start writing my first novel. Any kernel of wisdom for me based on all your reading?

Klaw
  (2:40 PM)

Plot. Plot, plot, plot. The best prose in the world won't save a bad plot for me.

1500+ questions - thanks for bearing with me today. I may move my chat for next week as I'm traveling again on Thursday, so keep an eye on my Twitter feed for updates.
