Chat with Matt Mosley

Jake (VA Beach)

Have you had the chance to see Sintim in action yet? Does he look like he'll be able to handle the starting gig?

Mosley
  (12:03 PM)

Sintim looked a lot more relaxed early in camp. I think he'll be fine as a starter. He uses those long arms to knock down passes and he's looked really good in coverage.

styles (lyndhurst)

So why do i keep reading about giant's de standing up and droping back into coverage? correct me if i'm wrong but didn't tuck say thats what he didn't like about sheridan's defense? whats the diffrence with pf's system?

Mosley
  (12:04 PM)

The difference with Fewell's defense is that Tuck might end up rushing from one of those LB spots. There's just a lot more unpredictability. Tuck or Umenyiora didn't mind dropping into coverage every now and then. It was just happening with too much frequency.

styles (lyndhurst)

now that the hall of fame game is in the books, which preseason match up are you most looking foward to?

Mosley
  (12:05 PM)

Sorry, but I don't particularly look forward to any preseason matchup. I guess this Friday's Redskins game against the Jags might be a little interesting because we'll see Donovan McNabb for a series or two. If you forced me to pick, I'd probably go with Jets--Giants for obvious reasons. It will be all about the stadium that night.

gmanbb44 (work)

riddle me this matt man, will eagle fans eat their words about "a terrible qb" leaving town?

Mosley
  (12:05 PM)

I think Kevin Kolb will do a nice job. I've always said that.

CRAZY WILLY (SPARTA NJ)

Matt do you think that Goff can hold back Bullock? if not when do you see that switch taking place?

Mosley
  (12:06 PM)

I think Bulluck will win the job if his knee responds in the preseason. He's an excellent leader, so it will be hard to keep him off the field if he's right from a physical standpoint.

Andrew (NYC)

People are saying that the reason that Barden isnt making it onto the field as a receiver is because hes not making his mark on special teams. Why isnt having to be a good blocker or tackler on special teams a must to be thrown into an end zone package? Just because hes not a good special teams player shouldnt mean hes not a good receiver

Mosley
  (12:07 PM)

Andrew, it's a crowded spot. If a guy's only going to give you 5-10 snaps on offense, he needs to do something else. Can't afford to have "specialist" receivers.

Jc (Clearwater, FL)

Hey there Matt. Andre Brown and Ramses Barden. All reports is that they are looking good Brown post injury and Barden post rookie year which of those 2, both, or neither will make a significant contribution to this team in you opinion?

Mosley
  (12:08 PM)

I think both guys are capable of making a valuable contribution. But Brown will get more touches early in the season simply based on his decision. He's a lot quicker than I realized. He'd already ruptured his Achilles by the time I got to Albany last year.

Chad (NYC)

If the Giants O line is healthy, how many yards can Ahmad Bradshaw amass?

Mosley
  (12:09 PM)

I think 1,100 yards is a good number for him.

Chad (NYC)

How far can the Gmen go if they are healthy?

Mosley
  (12:09 PM)

They're the biggest x-factor in the division. If they can get back to Giants football, they'll challenge the 'Boys for the division title.

BILLY (WEST CHESTER)

YOOOO MATT HOWS YOUR CAMP TOUR GOING? I NEED A PREDICTION... WHO WILL BE THE GIANTS BEST RUNNING BACK THIS YEAR?

Mosley
  (12:09 PM)

Ahmad Bradshaw.

Joe (Charlotte, NC)

Not that I thought Marc Columbo extremely struggled in the hall of fame game but it did seem that when there was pressure on Romo it was coming from the right side of the line and not the left. Do you think we could see Alex Barron play with the first team at RT? Could there be a competition at that spot between him and Colombo or am I just talking crazy? Thanks Matt and great blogs as always!

Mosley
  (12:10 PM)

Joe, you're talking crazy. Colombo will be fine. Barron's not going to challenge him. Thanks for reading!

Bill (Dallas)

Anybody in the Beast capable of finishing first other than us?

Mosley
  (12:10 PM)

Bill, I think the Giants and Eagles both have the talent to challenge.

Harvey (Rockville, VA)

Hey Matt. What surprised you most at Redskins camp, both positively and negatively?

Mosley
  (12:12 PM)

Man, I was really surprised to see Kareem Moore just owning that free safety spot. Also enjoyed watching some of the young linemen do a nice job. I think Haslett will save Carriker's career with his scheme. From a negative standpoint, this receiving crops is WEAK.

Kenny (D.C.)

How has the skins offensive line looked so far? I've heard great things about Trent Williams but ive also read that Artis Hicks has struggled at times.

Mosley
  (12:13 PM)

From what I saw, the line looked OK. Stephon Heyer's getting a lot of reps at RT because Brown's been banged up. But the pieces are there to make a big improvement in that area. They were AWFUL on the offensive line last season. Trent Williams is going to struggle with stunts at times, but he'll grow into that position. Great athleticism.

Kenny (D.C.)

Is it possible that the skins will have a good passing game this year with just Moss, Cooley, and Davis?

Mosley
  (12:14 PM)

McNabb will turn it into a decent passing game. He's worked with inferior talent before in Philly, although he had some great targets the last couple of season with Jackson and Celek. And Maclin arrived last season.

Giants Fan (NY)

Who gets more rushing yards this season Bradshaw or Jacobs?

Mosley
  (12:14 PM)

Bradshaw.

Don (Huntington,WV)

Bigger news.. Tebow's hair or Haynesworth making it through one full day of practice?HTTR!

Mosley
  (12:15 PM)

Both life-changing stories...But I'm burned out on Haynesworth, so give me Tebow's hair. That's just priceless.

Mike (Bethlehem, Pa)

Hey Matt--big fan of the blog. I'm in town for Eagles camp. What are some of the can't miss places to eat in Bethlehem?

Mosley
  (12:16 PM)

Place called Pacifico outside of town a little bit. Excellent fish and someone mentioned that the mojitos are good. Jeff McLane of the Inquirer is the mayor of the little "promenade" where this restaurant is housed.

Mike Kissolovege (PA)

Is Landry big enough to steam roll Jacobs this year?

Mosley
  (12:17 PM)

Landy's an absolute beast. I'm always stunned when I see him in person.

Don (Huntingon, WV)

Love the blog and the chats(when you do not cancel them)! Are you the king of canceled chats? I want research done on this ;) Keep up the great work!HTTR!

Mosley
  (12:17 PM)

Don, I'm not that bad!! I'm told that AFC East blogger Tim Graham is currently the "King of the Canceled Chat."

LL (VA)

MATT,YOU JUST MAKE ME SICK WITH YOUR ANTI-REDSKINS COMMENTS AND COVERAGE.THEY ARE GOING TO MAKE YOU EAT YOUR WORDS THIS YEAR!!

Mosley
  (12:18 PM)

LL, thanks for sharing.

bob (new jersey)

my packers face ur beloved eagles in the first week....who will the eagles put out there in their secondary to stop jennings..driver...and especially jermicheal finley......i have an feelin that they are goin to get torched.....thx

Mosley
  (12:20 PM)

My beloved Eagles? Love it! I think Nate Allen's going to be a nice player, but he'll get tested early. The key against a team like Green Bay is keeping everything in front of you. That means that Samuel can't go rogue and start trying to get a bunch of picks. Rodgers will make him pay like Romo did in those last two games of '09.

matt (pittsburgh pa)

hey matt i just wanted to get your opinion on how stupid the eagles are going to look for a trading mcnabb to the skins and b when kolb does so horrible by wk 5 they turn to mike vick

Mosley
  (12:20 PM)

Sir, Kevin Kolb's the real deal. You'll see a ton of folks jump on the bandwagon, but hopefully some of you will remember that the Beast had it first.

The Duke (The Dirty Jersey)

Do you think the Giants O-Line will be ok this year? Do you think they will find the right balance of youth and experience, by plugging in some of the new young guys, or go with the same O-Line and try to get one more year out of the group?

Mosley
  (12:21 PM)

Diehl, O'Hara and Snee are hardcore competitors. They have too much pride to have a repeat of that mess from last season. I'm anxious to see if Beatty can take over at LT. They'll be better.

StruseLL (Fort Washington, PA)

Matt, you mentioned in your blogs that Andy Reid's camps are some of the most intense that you've seen. With seemingly a growing number of injuries, nothing serious, do you think Andy should pump the brakes a bit?

Mosley
  (12:24 PM)

He'll back off a little bit toward the end of camp, but I don't think you can pin a lot of these injuries on the hitting. Eldra Buckley's taken the worst of it, and he's still standing. Maclin and Jackson weren't hurt during contact. I think the Eagles believe it's very important to let their young guys know how physical it's going to be in real games.

dustin (albany)

theres was a long discussion on the blog the other day. Who would you take as your #3 receiver, manningham or avant?

Mosley
  (12:24 PM)

Give me Avant.

ike (new jersey)

Hey matt, i was wondering how big of an impact will linval joseph and jpp have this year?

Mosley
  (12:25 PM)

Joseph's made a big move in camp the last couple days. He's been excellent. I would not be surprised to see him in the starting rotation at some point this season. JPP will get plenty of playing time. They're not easing either player into the mix. Good camp for both of them so far.

Billy (NYC)

What are the chances Kenny Phillips can return to form this season?

Mosley
  (12:26 PM)

I think it will take a little time. But after two or three regular-season games, I think there's a chance that the old Ken Phillips will show up.

mike (nc)

Have you heard anymore on the V-Jax to Washington rumor? What will the skins have to give up?

Mosley
  (12:27 PM)

Boy, they could sure use him. But it's probably too steep a price at this point. McNabb would LOVE that deal.

dustin (albany)

ramses barden recently had his best practice of training camp. he has ___ touchdowns this year?

Mosley
  (12:27 PM)

Six TDs for Barden.

Will (TX)

What type of numbers do you think McNabb will put up this year?

Mosley
  (12:29 PM)

I think McNabb will throw for 22 touchdowns and 9 INTs.

Max (NYC)

Is Nate Allen the real thing at safety for the Eagles? What's the status on Maclin and DJax? Aside from Kolb's media-poise (which i dont care about), how's he looking under center? Has Stew Bradley returned to form the way Eagle fans hope?

Mosley
  (12:30 PM)

I was very impressed with Bradley. Kolb will be fine. He's been erratic at times, but I think his best work will happen during games. Has excellent mental focus and that's why I'm pretty confident he'll succeed. Jackson and Maclin should be good to go.

Mark (DC)

Should the skins be worried Jamal Brown missing time already

Mosley
  (12:31 PM)

Never a good sign -- especially for a guy who missed all of last season. But let's watch it play out before we go into panic mode.

Brendan (DC)

Matt, do you expect to see Cooley and Davis on the field a lot more this year in order to make up for the lack of solid receivers?

Mosley
  (12:31 PM)

The answer is yes, Brendan.

Dave (Sacramento)

Devin Thomas on the 3rd team...is he that bad? are the other WRs that good? or is this shanahan motivating?

Mosley
  (12:32 PM)

I think this is motivational. Kelly needs to get back on the field. Nothing will be handed to him. I do know that Donovan likes the kid quite a bit.

bill (san diego)

matt - i think you work hard to show no bias toward dallas and that's evident by the questions you've answered so far. that said, how do you see the carries distributed in big d this year, assuming the 3-man stable remains healthy? 14 for felix, 10 for mbIII and 5 for choice is my guess...

Mosley
  (12:33 PM)

I think it will vary in each game. I think Jason Garrett will try to ride the hot hand. Felix might have a couple 20-carry games, but that won't happen every week. I'd say 16 for Jones, 12 for Barber and 5 for Choice.

Matt (IL)

Matt, what kind of season are you expecting Crayton to have this year, seeing that Dez won't see much action during preseason?

Mosley
  (12:34 PM)

Crayton's a guy that Romo trusts. He'll have his usual 600 yards and 4-5 TDs. Dependable receiver.

Kyle (Newark)

Provided that the defense is corrected, are the GMEN one of the elites in the league?

Mosley
  (12:35 PM)

I'm not sure they'll return to "elite" status, but they are one of the better "under the radar" teams out there. No one seems to know what to make of them. Tom Coughlin thinks they'll be REALLY good.

milroyigglesfan (alaska)

Matt, there has been alot of chatter about the Dallas Cowboys being an "elite" team. In my day, elite was reserved for a near dynasty. Dallas is a good team, and now that they've won 1 playoff game have that monkey off their back. But, do you consider them an "elite" team? is any beast team "elite" in your mind at this point?

Mosley
  (12:36 PM)

Times have changed. There are now a handful of "elitish" type teams. And the Cowboys are definitely in that group based on what they did in '09. And especially based on their talent. They have a borderline All-Pro QB, talented RBs and the makings of an excellent WR corps. Oh, and they may have the best overall defense in the league.

Steve (Columbia, MD)

Haslett predicts rushing Brian Orakpo 600 times this year...Can we expect, this being his second year in the bigs, for some opposing QBs to develop "Orakpophobia"???

Mosley
  (12:37 PM)

Steve, doctors in the Northeast are already seeing cases of this, so yes, Orakpo's going to have a monster season.

Matt (DC)

Matt, what numbers do you think Eli post this season? Do you think both Smith and Nicks each could have a thousand yards receiving?

Mosley
  (12:38 PM)

That's certainly a possibility. I think Nicks is about to become one of the top receivers in the division. Just a huge downfield threat. And I loved watching him run routes in camp last week. Man, he's really turned the corner. Just needs to stay healthy.

Mason (Louisville)

Hey Matt, I couldn't live without your blog! I'm afraid the loss of John Phillips is really going to hurt us... your thoughts? Also do you think its a good idea for Scandrick to be playing so much with his bad finger? If the guy can barely bend it now, how is he going to improve a defense thats focused on creating turnovers if hes playing the majority of all the preseason games?

Mosley
  (12:39 PM)

You have to play through that type of stuff. He may not lead the world in INTs, but he'll get his hands on a lot of passes. He's too important to the process to have him sit down for a week or so. He's not established enough to get that privilege, either.

Josh (Knoxville, TN)

People slight Emmitt Smith for having such a great offensive line. But if I'm not mistaken, none of those guys are in the Hall of Fame. What changes first: some 'Boys O-lineman get inducted or people stop slighting Smith for playing on good teams?

Mosley
  (12:40 PM)

I haven't heard a lot of people "slighting" Emmitt. And don't worry, Larry Allen's a first-ballot guy in my opinion.

robin (kansas)

help me out.how well do you think ratliff would do as a dt in a diffrent scheme, say the steelers?

Mosley
  (12:41 PM)

I think he'd be a Pro Bowler in any scheme. He's just that talented. But he's fortunate to be playing for Wade Phillips, who knows how to use him best. But LeBeau could figure out how to get him in the Pro Bowl, too. He's that good.

scottman (NC)

Who is leading the way for next wr spot barden or hagan?

Mosley
  (12:42 PM)

Barden in my book.

Chris (NYC)

What do you think of the Revis situation. I realize he wants to be the highest paid corner, but isn't that a little crazy considering he'd have to beat out Asamgou's pay which is only as high as it is because the Raider's are a senseless organization?

Mosley
  (12:42 PM)

Both sides will come to their senses. This is a lot of rhetoric right now. It will get resolved. The guy's not sitting out the season, no matter what Woody says.

jason (boston,ma)

How do you see Martellus Bennett shaking out this year? (especially since Phillips is out)

Mosley
  (12:43 PM)

Hey, it's time for him to show some maturity. I won't try to predict anything. He's been an enormous letdown so far. And Phillips had become a better all-around TE in a short time.

Dave (Sacramento)

Rank your top 4 RBs in the beast.

Mosley
  (12:44 PM)

1. Felix Jones2. Ahmad Bradshaw3. Clinton Portis 4. LeSean McCoy5. Marion Barber6. Brandon JacobsBrandon, they made me do it!

Juan (Parts Unknown)

Whos the most entertaining interview/personality on each of the Beast Teams?

Mosley
  (12:46 PM)

Good question, Juan from "Parts Unknown" Cowboys -- Keith BrookingEagles -- DeSean Jackson, Brent Celek or Stew BradleyGiants -- Justin Tuck hands downRedskins -- Orakpo and Santana Moss in my book

Pat (Work)

Don't you feel that Dallas is a house of cards with the book-end tackles they have?

Mosley
  (12:48 PM)

I think Doug Free showed the other night a glimpse of how consistent he can be. He'll be fine at LT and Colombo has dropped some weight and he's in the best shape of his left at RT. So no, "house of cards" isn't the first thing that comes to mind.

jeremy (Va) [via mobile]

Do Cowboy fans hate the Redskins as much as my fellow Redskin fans hate the Cowboys? My mom loves Dallas so so there's usually a family feud whenever they play.

Mosley
  (12:49 PM)

I think Skins fans "hate" the Cowboys a tad more than the other way around. Just my humble opinion. I don't think the Cowboys view the Skins as their most hated rival these days. That's either the Eagles or Giants depending on the year.

Jon (DC)

Who do you see winning the open outside linebacker spot this year for the redskins, andre carter or the ultimate jack-of-all-trades lorenzo alexander? Also how is Ricky McIntosh looking in his transition inside?

Mosley
  (12:49 PM)

I loved how McIntosh looked inside. Should've written more about that. Carter will be the starter, but Lo will see plenty of time.

Ian (CT)

Breakout player in the beast this year?

Mosley
  (12:50 PM)

Brandon Graham

darren woodson fan (put me in coach!)

5 probowls, 3 all pros, 3 superbowls, how is darren not in the HOF? When will he get there? Best HOF chance, in order, darren woodson, ed reed, Rodney harrison, brian dawkins?

Mosley
  (12:51 PM)

There are certain positions that don't get a lot of love. In past years, it's hard to get past all the skill position players. When you have Emmitt and Jerry in the same class, doesn't leave a lot of room for safeties. Hate to disappoint you, but I'd rather see Cliff Harris go in before Woody. And Woody's a friend of mine.

MJ (Boston)

as a Cowboy fan i hate the REdskins especially DeAngelo Hall...he's not in the top 30 of NFL corners...I got him at 33. Laron Landry plays like Roy L Williams....he's over-rated too

Mosley
  (12:52 PM)

MJ, that's a silly thing to say about D. Hall. I think he at least cracks the top 30, sir!!

milroyigglesfan (alaska)

How many wins do you think is needed to win the beast this year? Do you see the beast holding their own against what appears on paper to be one of the toughest out of conference schedules?

Mosley
  (12:52 PM)

I think 11 wins may get the job done.

Frank (Chester, PA)

ok so to a dallas question. with all this stupid hype about no team hosting a SB has ever went to it, what do you think the cow-girls chances are of actually doing it? the turth now matt!

Mosley
  (12:53 PM)

I think they have as good a chance as anyone in the NFC. Can't see Favre repeating his unbelievable '09 season if he returns and the Saints will have the Super Bowl hangover. And I don't trust the Packers' D. Still have memories of that Cards game in my mind. So the Cowboys have a great shot of making this thing happen.

Marc (Malden, MA)

When will Joe Jacoby get into the Hall of Fame? He should have been in years ago.

Mosley
  (12:54 PM)

Marc, you'll be waiting awhile on that one, sir. Jacoby's deserving, but they aren't going to put back-to-back Hogs in the Hall.

Jae (California)

based on last week's developments, is there any chance of you ever calling Mr. Lurie "Buffalo Guy" in light of his "almost-win" ways?

Mosley
  (12:54 PM)

Good one, Jae. I'll see you at Cowboys camp next week!

UberSamoyed (Frisco,TX)

You've had the whole chat to think about it. Answer the Muppet question! If all four head coaches were Muppets, then who would they be? For this answer, Muppets from "Sesame Street" and "The Muppet Show" are in play...

Mosley
  (12:57 PM)

Uber, it's an outstanding question. I'll answer it despite your efforts to second-guess everything I've written on the Beast! :)Coughlin: Oscar the Grouch (easy)Wade: Bert from "Bert and Ernie" fame...He just sort of has Bert's laidback approach.Reid: Fozzy Bear. I could've said something else from the Muppets, but I'm in a nice mood.Mike Shanahan: Definitely Kermit.

Unger (Chicago)

Does all the media hupla that Jets have right now help the Giants get so work done without all the distractions?

Mosley
  (12:58 PM)

Can't hurt, Unger.

MJ (Boston)

i thought Woody was better than Harris...woody covered WRs in the slot, stuffed the run....was the backbone of that D for along time. Also, D-Hall doesnt' crack the top 30...

Mosley
  (12:59 PM)

Cliff Harris redefined the position. In my mind, he was the best safety from the 70s. How can the best safety from the 70s not be represented in Canton. Don't get me wrong, though. Woody as an unbelievable player.

Travis (City of DepressedSportsFans)

Historically, do you know any other (small) rookie WR's who liked to break into pastry shops before a breakout season? Typical Notre Dame...

Mosley
  (12:59 PM)

I've asked ESPN Stat and Info to look this up for me.

Dan (Tx)

what can we expect from Boss this year, will he be 100% by week 1?

Mosley
  (1:00 PM)

At this rate, he'll probably have to play through the pain throughout the season. The Giants will have to manage that situation. Time for Beckum to seize the opportunity. And it's time for me to bail on you guys!! Thanks for stopping by.
