Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to today's chat. The new giant notebook is posted, there's a new blog up and plenty of news stories from the week and much to discuss with Margarito being denied a license and the Pacquiao fight hanging in the balance. We also have Adamek back in action Saturday against Grant. So let's get to it.

Walter (LA, CA)

Hey Dan,If (by some miracle) Margarito doesn't get licensed in Texas or New Jersey, is it possible that Pacquiao's team can entertain the fight with Marquez who has called him out?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

That's what Marquez wants but Top Rank has shown ZERO interst in that.

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

By the way, I was a couple of minutes later for the chat because I was on the phone with Texas speaking to their boxing license office. Margarito has submitted a faxed application but it can't be ruled on yet because it is considered an incomplete application at the moment until they get the $20 check for the cost of the license. The commission is told that a hard copy of the application and the check has been mailed. Once they get it, they can rule to grant or deny. Will probably take about 10 days or so, I was told.

brian (scottsdale, az)

random thought, american airlines is now charging a fee to get "premium seats". Looks like they take cues from the WBC, new ways to collect fees.

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Nice.

Will D (Cumberland, RI)

Btw... I assume most of the freaks share this sentiment... but I have ZERO interest seeing Pascal vs. BHop. Make Pascal - Bute or immediate rematch with Dawson. Both those options are more compelling than a BHop fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

There won't be an immediate rematch between Pascal and Dawson as he can take an interim bout, which he probably will do. I don't love the BHop fight either.

Jeff (Dearborn, MI)

Did JCC vs. Cotto get finalized?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

Not yet.

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

By the way Freaks if you are not already, follow me on Twitter @danrafaelespn. I Tweet updates all the time.

Manny (Riverisde,CA)

We want Juan! We want Juan! great job by the CSAC in refusing to give MargaCHEATo a license, he doesnt deserve it or the big fight. Marquez vs Pacman 3!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

You are of the opinion of most of the Freaks I am seeing comments from.

AJ (Arlington, WA)

DTM, What percentange do you give Marquez-Pacquiao III of happening?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

In November? 1%.

Rick (TX)

Dan,I have the trip paid for to Vegas on 9/18. Any chance Lopez still fights that night? Ur notebook says Escalante/Ponce de Leon hasn't been put on paper yet. Any chance Escalante is offered the fight? Not sure he's ready but it would be a good scrap...love the twitter updates by the way....

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Lopez-Marquez will be postponed. Marquez's injury will not allow him to fight on Sept. 18. There is no replacement being discussed. The fight will be postponed. Period.

Matt (Washington, DC)

Dan, think the Margacheato denial may prompt PacMan to look elsewhere or are we just looking at jurisdiction shopping/waiting for Texas to appease the cheater?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

They will at least wait to see what happens in Texas, which I believe will license him.

Will D (Cumberland, RI)

Whats up with Floyd Berto, I mean Andre Berto only looking at fighting 140lb guys? His star status for me is starting to dim because he's making it a pain to make a fight. Half HBO fault, half his fault for creating the monster.

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

You are dead on.

Marcus (Minneapolis, MN)

What is with HBO wanting all these guys from 140 to move up to 147 to face Berto? If there's no suitable opponent for Berto at 147 right now then HBO shouldn't put Berto on. Leave it up to his promoter to get him a fight without wasting HBO money on some garbage.

mike (baltimore)

Hey dan, hopefully Bob Arum reads this but making fights like pacquaio - margarito are of no interest to 99% of boxing fans and is the reason why the sport looks to be suffering in the eyes of many

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

The Freaks seem to be overwhelmingly anti-Pacquaio-Cheato.

Jorge (East Los Angeles)

Dan, Let's be honest, there really isn't a fight involving B-hop that I would be interested in.

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

I hear ya Freak.

Ced (LV)

So are you stuck going to Mosley/Mora now? If so, my condolences.

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

I will no go to that fight.

Todd (Florence, SC)

Why would Pascal use his interim fight against BHop instead of Bute? No one ever looks impressive against Bernard even if they win. And the Bute fight would be massive in Canada. I know Bute has an October fight, but why not wait on him and do the fight early next year?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

I think the Pascal people would love to make the Bute fight right now, but the Bute people are not in such a rush. Bute makes big money even if he fights a hobo and they see no rush. They want the fight I think, but I think they are content to wait a little bit.

Don (Mcallen,tx)

Hey Dan the Man , I would like to know if you know who else will be fighting on morales-limond ppv card ,(other than edgar sosa) , and do you think a fight freak should buy this card

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

Juan Carlos Burgos, a good feather contender, is on the show. I am not sure what the other TV fights are. The bout sheet as it stands now is listed in the schedule I keep. I guess it comes down to if you are a Morales fan. It seems like a decent show right now.

Ced (LV)

You want Pacquiao to drop in weight to fight JMM? Isn't that a little unrealistic/unfair?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

Not at all. He and his people have said all along he can make 140. It is why he kept the Ring mag belt for so long at 140 because he kept saying he might fight again at 140. Marquez I am sure would be willing to fight him a couple of pounds over 140 as well.

bill (pgh)

seriously Dan, after Nevada and California what possible rationale would Texas have to license Margarito OTHER then the size of the gate at Jerry Land?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Nevada didn't reject Margarito. It tabled the vote until he went to Cali, which he did. Cheato is now eligible under the law to apply to any state in the US and all of those states have the right to give him a license if they want.

Matt (Washington, DC)

Dan, you seem to be all for Zab Judah's attempt to campaign at 140. Any chance Berto's latest manueverings indicate a possibility of him trying to move down? I think probably not since it seems Kotelnik would be moving up, but the thought occurred to me.

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Berto has told me personally that he has no intention of going down to 140.

Koichi (NYC)

lol at your tweet to Floyd btw

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

Glad you enjoyed that. All the Freaks would see it if they followed me on Twitter.

Bubba (ottawa il)

King freak, whats up? Thanks for the huge notebook. And great blogs this week also. Dan, the whole pac-margo fight stinks to high hell, i know you will cover it wall to wall, but please dont call this a "super fight" at any time. And i will not send you no more questions defending money may LOL.

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

I will not call it a super fight because it isn't one.

David (Nashville)

At the risk of banishment, I feel Margarito served his punishment and should be allowed to fight again. Whether it was too lenient, it's what was dished out, and he served it. Also, I am interested in watching Pacquiao Margarito. HATE the mention of Pascal Bhop.

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

You are entitled to your opinion. I am not necessarily opposed to him fighting again either. I just don't like the Pacquiao fight.

Michael (Chicago (Formerly Oakland))

What's JuanMa's plan B if Marquez' thumb is hurt bad?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

Reschedule the fight.

Tom (Sacramento)

Ponce vs Escalante is a solid fight. So you will be in L.A. now that Juanma is off?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Ponce-Escalante is an excellent fight for sure. And now that the other fight is off, I will make plans for LA.

John (San Fran)

What did you think about Lara the other night? He has a stiff jab

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

I think Lara is a future titleholder without a doubt.

Jerry (Winston-Salem)

500 channels and they can show bass fishing, women's softball, and poker but cannot put Adamek-Grant on TV? Crazy.

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

It's on ppv. Understand the world we live in.

Daniel Kiflai (Pluto)

Dan.... What was your thoughts on Top Rank airing the Commissions decisions live on there website? Stupid gamble that made there own guy look even dirtier .

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

No gamble. They showed a public hearing. I was happy they did. I watched in on their web site. Had they not shown it I was also listening in on the phone, but they provided boxing fans and those interested a quality service.

Justin (Springfield, NJ)

Dan: Are we there yet on Martinez-Williams II? If so, any idea on a date and venue?

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

It's close. If it happens it's Nov. 20. There is no venue at the moment.

Randy (Williambsurg, VA)

Dan, did you have no interest in driving up to Jesrsey to see the Adamek-Grant fight? I bet they get 10,000 there.

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

I would have gone up but I have my family coming to visit today for several days and I have tickets to see KISS on Saturday night!! I'll check out Adamek-Grant on the DVR.

Anthony (NY)

Official prediction on Adamek-Grant?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Adamek by mid-rounds stoppage.

steven (louisville)

is showtime going to have a boxing telecast on sept 18 now or is that whole event scrapped?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

No official announcement yet but it will be scrapped.

Brian J. (So Cal)

I know that most people are calling for it, but a third fight against Pac for Marquez to me seems like a big mismatch at 140+. Pac seems to get stronger with added weight and Marquez just doesn't carry it the same. I would be shocked if Marquez lasts more than 6 rounds with Manny and I have a TON of respect for Marquez, but just saying.

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

But we won't know unless they fight.

Rick (Marina)

Whats up Dan, this is probably the worst year for boxing in terms of lack of matches, Im really bummed out about the Marquez-Lopez fight, wh, why, why?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

It's been a terrible year and it's getting worse.

Justin (Indy)

Dan, just signed up for twitter this week and started following you. I love when you needled Mayweather about avoiding Pacquiao.

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Good man.

Nick K. (Kansas)

ACDC or ZZ Top? Go.

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

AC/DC.

Daniel Kiflai (Pluto)

Who should Cloud and Dawson fight while Pascal take his interm fight with Hopkins or Bute? Should Chad wait or fight Coud?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

I'd love to see Cloud fight Diaconu on Pascal's next undercard and maybe build up a Pascal-Cloud fight.

bill (pgh)

btw Keith Law dissed a fan who asked a KISS question in his chat last week.

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

OMG! I hope Gene breathes fire on him!!

Ced (LV)

Earlier in the chat you said you would not be going to Mosley/Mora, and now you're saying you're making plans for LA. Which one is it?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

Well seeing that Mosley-Mora is in LA what do you think?

Gil (NYC)

Any big name fighters following you on twitter yet?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

I'm not sure. I know Dana White from UFC follows me and so do Zab Judah and Danny Jacobs. And I also follow them. Other than that I am not really sure. Why don't you look throught my followers and tell me.

Dave, NJ [via mobile]

Please let DiBella know that the freaks appreciate him buying rights for PPV replays. It helps us save money!

Worried (light heavy)

Is chad dawson's career over?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

No, but your participation in today's chat is because you are banned for such a dumb question.

bill (pgh)

will Vitali-Briggs end up on ESPN also?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

They are talking about it.

bill (pgh)

today's notebook said Berto is looking at a November fight. Is the tripleheader in Brooklyn in October dead?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Not dead but if it happens, it won't be in October.

Pete (NYC)

Were you being funny when you wrote in the notebook that Adamek was trying to "polish his heavyweight credentials"?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

No and I didn't even realize the pun until you just sent that in. I'm funny without even knowing it I guess.

Bobby (Washington, DC)

Dan, since you brough up his name, what is your opinion of Dana White?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

Not a real fan of his sport, but mad respect for him and what he has done with it.

Alex Trebek (Canada)

For a true daily double, Dan, the category is Numbers and the answer is: This is how many Ricky Hattons there are.

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

What is only one?

Ced (LV)

What makes Willie Lee 'decent opposition'? A stiff wind knocks him out.

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

I wasn't talking about Lee. I meant other guys Lara has faced.

Bert (Norco, CA)

Dan, great coverage of the hearing on Twitter. Really appreciate it as it makes work a little more fun. You were dead on that it seemed predetermined that CA had no intent to license Margarito. Funny how our Cali officials judged Margarito for mismanagement when we all know that California officials right now haven't done the best job of managing the state or anything for that matter.

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

Thanks. That was a long freakin day.

Billy (Patchogue, NY)

What's the word with Amir Khan for December? Is Marquez still the leading candidate?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

Could be Marquez, but I suspect it won't happen because it will be just too expensive. Marquez might fight Katsidis.

jcs (winnipeg, canada)

funny, I actually thought you were in the courtroom in Cali, which in hindsight makes no sense, but that's how thorough your reporting was.

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

Thanks. I watched every second of the hearing and spoke to people involved with it after.

David (Houston)

If not Marquez then who is it gonna be for Khan?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Could be Maidana or maybe Victor Ortiz.

Fernando (FT Carson)

Just wanna say thanks for the blow by blow updates on margarito greatly apprecaited

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Good because my fingers were sore.

Brad (Philly)

Roger Mayweather said he expects Floyd to fight again this year. Do you see that happening?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

No.

Bobby (Md)

Hey DTM, I honestly think that Pirog is perfect for Fernando Guerrero. Pirog's footwork is a little off and he's always switching stances. I think in time Fernando would catch him and hurt him big time. Your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Guerrero is not ready for that fight yet.

Mitchel (houston)

Hey Dan, since you are a big WWE fan, can you give us your 5 favorite wrestlers of all time?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

Superfly Snuke No. 1 without question. But others, in particular order, Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, prime Hulk Hogan, Flair, Road Warriors, Tito Santana.

Alex Trebek (Canada)

You are still the champion and King Freak. Well played.

Jeff (Gilbert, AZ)

Bigger waste of talent....Golota or Grant?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

Golota. By far.

Kent (St Catharines)

Awesome Notebook today Dan. I love the feature articles, but my favorite are the Quick Hits. Always full of information and tidbits. Whatever, happened to Ricardo Williams? I know he got out of jail a couple years ago. Is he still boxing?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Thanks. Williams made a comeback after getting out of prison and it went nowhere. He's bounced around but his career as a fighter with any meaning is long over. I am not sure if he is still fighting but I imagine is still.

Kelly (New York)

Snuka jumpining on Muraco from the top of the steel cage was one of the highlights of my childhood by far!

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

The Backlund jump from the top of the cage when Snuka missed is legendary!

Ray (Dearborn, MI)

My girlfriend and I had "relations" while facing the tv during FNF last week, do we get couples freak status?

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

These are my readers.

Cody (Minneapolis)

Since the Sept 18th fight is postponed does that mean that ticket purchasers will be getting a refund or that we have to try and sell them now??? Cancelled is clearly a refund situation? What about postponed???

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Nothing has been announced but I am sure refunds will be available for those who want them.

Randy (NYC)

I saw your tweet to Mayweather but I didn't see him respond. Is he ducking you?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Probably. Like he ducked my questions in St. Louis when I saw him at the hotel a couple of weeks ago.

jcs (winnipeg, canada)

speaking of wrestling - favorite finishing move of all time? i say Razor's edge, or Macho man's elbow off the top rope, with the DDT being the honorable mention

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

Tombstone and the superfly. But I gotta say, John Morrison's Starship Pain is unreal as is Evan Bourne's Shooting Star.

Marcus (Earth)

do you listen to rap?

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

Not a lot these days but I did in college quite a bit. One of buddies used to play NWA all the time.

Don (Virginia Beach)

Bradle-Alexander has about 100% interest from the boxing public, but about .01% interest from the general public. If it happens the fight does horrible ratings on HBO.

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

You're dead wrong. HBO will market the hell out of it and the boxing media will cover it like a super fight.

Dave (NJ)

Will you watch James Toney fight MMA?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Nope. And, in fact, we have the final Friday Night Fights that night (on a special Saturday date) and I will be in studio in Bristol at that time anyway doing the show.

psycho (LaLaLand)

so is julio in with a stiff this weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. I wouldn't say a stiff, but LC isn't in with a top guy. He is in with a guy who he should beat.

Berndawg (CHI)

GOT, Pavlik, anything? Thanks!

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

Zip.

Ud (Des Moins)

Mr R. - I've heard some rumblings about a possible Joe Calzaghe comeback...any truth to this ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

There have been "rumblings" since the day he retired. As of now, there is nothing.

cody (montana)

whos the top american heavyweight rght now

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Ray Lewis.

Bearman (Biggest Little City)

Just watched Grant's destruction by Lewis on Youtube. Man, he was out since mid first round, legs GONE.

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

I remember it well. That was the first fight I covered after being hired as USA TODAY's full time boxing writer. April 29, 2000. I will never forget it.

Fernando (FT Carson)

to reiterate the comment about the quick hits. In 2007 i learned about Marquez vs Juarez fighting in Tucson, Az i was serving in Iraq at the time and was able to buy great seats for it. It was the first fight I ever went to and I owe you for the heads up thanks Dan.

Marcus (Earth)

What are you wearing right now?

j (atl)

is andrade the main event next week on FNF with lemieux out? please tell me espn picked up something else.

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

Andrade may actually be out and they are working on a new main event.

Ryan (Michigan)

Just signed up for twitter just to follow your tweets. Freak status?

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

No, that is expected.

Matt (Texas)

Are those "rumblings" that UD is talking about the same ones I'm having after I just ate a 2lb carne asada burrito?

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

LOL!

Dave, NJ [via mobile]

Who is the announce crew for the Adamek-Grant card?

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

Col. Bob and Benny Ricardo I believe.

Milton (Raleigh)

Dantastic!!, Please tell me that Haye is not sinking deeper into duckage by coming to a deal with Harrison?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

It looks like it will be Harrison unfortunately.

Chris (PA)

Is the LC moving down to 147 for his next fight? I thought it was said in the chats that he is moving back down.

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh, the LC. The goal is to get there eventually but not for this fight. I think he'll be about 151, 152 for this fight.

Love this chat (thanks DTM)

Why are you a fan of KISS? Not like, "How could you ever like a band like KISS?" I just want to know how your love for KISS originated.

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

I've been a KISS fan since I listened to them and saw pictures of them in 1976 or 1977. A kid in my class (like second grade) brought a record into school and a bunch of listened to it.

Justin (Albuquerque, NM)

What if Briggs shocks the world an KO?s Vitali?

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

The sun will still come up the next day.

Walter (LA, CA)

I think it's hilarious that the anti-Pacquiao fans are screaming about the Margarito fight being at 151 and that they're proclaiming that Pac only fights catchweights for titles. Um, hello? For the record, he's only fought ONE catchweight fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

Exactly.

Sal (Texas)

Can You put a link to the notebook on your twitter? I can't find the notebook. Where is it?

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

Are you blind? It's the lead story on espn.com/boxing.

Gianni (Sacramento)

Out of spite I hope Harrison knocks Haye out.

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

Audley has a great left hand so anything is possible.

Nizzi (Des Moines, IA)

Does Haye have a mandatory? If not who is in line for his next mandatory?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

His mandatory is Chagaev, but it's not due yet.

David (Houston)

Speaking of madatories, not like it matters but doesnt Pacquiao have one?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

I'm sure he does and I honestly have no idea who it is.

dog catcher (los angelas)

where is Perro, looking for him

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

Probably looking for his $1 million payday that doesn't exist.

Tom (Fall River)

Dan, I think the only thing that can save boxing in 2010 is Valuev's poop making an appearance!

Keith (Holton, IN)

Not that I'm foaming at the mouth to see Pascal-Bhop, but if Pascal doesn't fight Bute next I don't see it being a bad idea to make that fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

The general impression I am getting from readers is that if Pascal-Hopkins happened it would be OK as an interim fight for Pascal as long as it's not on PPV.

Ryan (Youngstown)

I've heard some rumors about Pavlik vs. Pirog for the WBO belt at 160. Any truth to that?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

It's been discussed but not in a serious way.

Zim (Boston, MA)

Have you ever been offered a job by one of the promotional companies?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Yes.

Dave (NY)

Who is in the runnings to fight Caballero on that HBO triple header

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

Escalante was brought up, but he is going to fight Ponce De Leon. Jason Litzau was mentioned, which is an interesting fight and Caballero would go to 130. They're looking for an opponent. It's also not set that it will be a tripleheader. HBO wants to get the main event with Berto set first and go from there.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Dan, do you remember the classic Superfly Snuka on Piper's Pit? Great segment leading to a legendary feud. As a kid I was so disturbed and sad about Snuka getting crack with the coconut and then getting whipped by Piper's belt.

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

Like yesterday. I thought it was real.

Chad Dawson (Montreal)

He was holdin me and head buttin' all night. I'm not makin' excuses. But he was holdin me and head buttin' all night. I'm not makin' excuses. But he was holdin me and head buttin' all night. I'm not makin' excuses....

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

Merchant: "Well you are making excuses." That's why Larry is a legend.

Athletic Commission (California State)

I'm sorry, I just woke up, I didn't pay attention to a word you just said, but I vote to go ahead and deny your request for an application at this time Mr. Margarito

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

Pretty much.

Kevin (Denver)

So I have to know, after you specifically asked freaks NOT to friend you on Facebook 2 weeks ago, how many did you get soliciting your friendship?

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

A ton. They were all rejected and continue to be rejected daily. My Facebook is personal. My Twitter is for boxing.

Bert (Norco, CA)

Quick request Dan. I'm an avid reader when I sit on porcelain. Can you tell the ESPN.COM folks to make a printer-friendly link for your Notebook and Blogs?

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

Not sure how that works.

Marc (Malden, MA)

Let me guess. Jose Suliman offered you a job, but when you said you wanted to abolish interim, super, diamond, emeritus belts and no longer charge santioning fees, he stripped you of his offer.

Brian (Toronto)

First Kiss album bought: DestroyerFirst Kiss show attended: Creatures of the Night tourLife is good.

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

Love Creatures.

Dustin (Wichita, KS)

I love the idea of HBO pushing for Lara-Angulo, but do you think there is any chance Gary Shaw let's this fight happen?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

HBO isn't pushing for it. It my thought for my blog. Gary has no interest in the fight because he knows his guy probably gets slapped around. I asked him about it and his response was that the fight "means nothing." I countered and said, "You mean like how meaningful Angulo-Yorgey on HBO was?"

ernesto (mckinney,tx)

how impressive was k9 bundrage win over spinks? Does it make the contender seris legit.

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

He beat the crap out him.

Kent (St Catharines)

Dan, I know you are an East Coaster through and through. However, would you ever move to Las Vegas to cut down on your travel as I know you hate flying.

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

At one point after I left USAT and took the job at ESPN my wife and I discussed moving to Vegas becase I can really live anywhere I want. I only need an airport and my computer and phone and I am fine. Eventually we decided to stay here because we like it here, she has her career and even if I was in Vegas I would still have to fly East for AC fights and NYC fights and for Friday Night Fights, so we stayed put.

Michael (Chicago (Formerly Oakland))

What about Berto-Collazo II? I'd love that fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

A lot of people would like to see it but Collazo has fought only once since the first one against a hobo and he says he is not going to fight at welter anymore because he can't make the weight.

DeMarcus Black (Las Vegas)

Michael, you need to understand: Collazo doesn't ever fight. He just complains.

Billy (Patchogue, NY)

How sad/disturbing are these financial problem stories going around about Chad Dawson? You think some guys would learn from the mistakes of so many...

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

I've been hearing abou thtem for a long time. It's no shock at all. It's normal of fighters. They think the gravy train will never end and they are ignorant with how to handle their money.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

"You mean like how meaningful Angulo-Yorgey on HBO was?"Way to put Gary Shaw in his place, Dan!

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

I try. It's called keepin it real.

robb (north andover, ma)

do promoters get annoyed when you get snappy with them a la yorgey comment, or do they just expect you to call them out on their promoter crap like that?

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

Some do, some don't. Some get really upset, others don't care and some just take it like it comes. It's cool. I have a thick skin and they should too.

Rex (Toronto)

Will you be in Province Quebec if Bute-Pascal goes down?

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

Did you read my blog today?

Gutterdandy (nyc)

What will Shannon Briggs talk about now that he can't float wild conspiracy theories about HBO and the Klitschkos trying to deny him?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

He'll find something, although HBO is not airing his fight with Vitali.

Craig (Detroit)

DTM - just joined you on twitter...looking forward to the real time updates-stories!

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

Another Freak Follower!

Ryan (Saratoga Springs, NY)

Dan the Man, greetings from upstate New York? Any chance you can pull some strings and get Friday Night Fights back up to Toga anytime soon? Thanks!

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

Wish I had some juice there, but I don't.

DeMarcus Black (Las Vegas)

Michael Stra-DAN, did you happen to see, and if so, what do you happen to think, of the Ring's 'A-to-Z' all-time rankings, wherein they ranked Armstrong ahead of Ali all-time? Would you agree with that?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

As a Giants fan, love the nickname. I have looked at the A-Z. Good idea and it's being done well. Armstrong on the all-time p4p rankings does rate ahead of Ali so I can't argue it.

Tony (The Bronx)

Dan, I sense a Bob Arum middle finger coming when you begin discussing the Pac-Margarito undercard.

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

Probably his middle toe as well.

Jelani (NO)

What chance do you actually give Alexander-Bradley of being made for New Orleans?

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

I think it's possible, but they need to sign the fight first and then worry about the venue.

robb (north andover, ma)

across boxing, and your career, who is your favorite guy to interview?

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

There have been a lot of guys I have enjoyed interviewing. But some more than others. I have always enjoyed interviewing Wladimir Klitschko. Hasim Rahman is always fun. There are a lot of them. Judah is fun.

Bob (VA)

If we touched the record player in elemetary school, we got sent to the pricipal's office? You must have had some nice teachers if they let you play KISS.

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

It was during recess time where we could use the record player, but everyone had to wear headsets, so we all rocked out to Christine Sixteen on the head sets.

Julio (Tucson, AZ)

DTM....I thought it was funny seeing you and Dana White exchanging tweets the other day. Do you have any interest in the Toney/Couture MMA match next week??

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

I'll look for the result but have no real interest in the match.

Chris (Atlanta, GA)

I have been in Atlanta for a while and I was curious when the last time a major fight was here? Does the comission in GA suck? I don't even ever see a Georgia judge. Memphis has had some decent fights so I know its possible. Saw you at Taylor-Spinks there. What gives? Any idea?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

Off the top of my head, the last major fight in Atlanta was when Holyfield defended against Vaughn Bean I believe.

Tommy (DE)

More likely to come in over welterweight limit joan guzman or valuev poop

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

tristan (palo alto , CA)

Joined on Twitter yesterday for the automatic updates for my phone. Im happy to be getting up-to-the-minute news!

Jeff (Gilbert, AZ)

Dan,In the past when a Freak would ping in on a chat and ask about something already discussed in the Notebook I could understand you being annoyed....but now you have Tweets, Blogs, RADS, Chats and the Notebook...sometimes it's hard to keep up with your extensive work.....Keep it up we love it!

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

More work for me, more studying for you!

Aaron S. Bayley (Toronto, ON)

Hoylfield-Bean was a classic.

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

If by classic you mean it sucked, well you are right.

chuzen (st. louis)

do you think valuev enters the ring with loaded diapers?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

LMAO!!!!!! Pay the man, Shirley.

miguel (los angeles)

did you see Hayemakers comments regarding the klitschkos?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Something new and stupid or old and stupid?

Dave (NY)

Any chance we get Cintron vs Berto?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Hopefully, not.

George (Jersey City)

I think Mikey Garcia is a few steps from being one of the top guys at 126. He gave Cornelius Lock a vicious beating last Sat night.

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Garcia is an outstanding prospect and I was very impressed by the beating he gave Lock.

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

Fresh from the Bat Email: My mother reports that the family is about 200 miles from arrival, in case the Freaks were interested.

psycho (LaLaLand)

RAD tomorrow?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

No. Have plans and family will be here.

Michael (Chicago-Formerly Oakland)

So if your blackberry is the bat phone, is Twitter the Bat-signal light?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

That's a good question.

Jonathan (Northern, VA)

You and Dana White seem to have hit it off. Next time they come to the Patriot Center, you should go. Imagine the crowd going nuts like they did when Pavlik KOd Taylor, but for several hours.

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Next time they come to the Pat Center I am going to try to go if my schedule allows. Pat Center is literally a few miles down the road from where I live.

bill (pgh)

who would you like to see Berto face next? I'm not sure Jones is ready and other welters don't seem appealing or realistic.

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

If he isn't fighting Shane and Zab won't fight at 147, I'd like to see Mike Jones get the shot. Why not?

Cody (Minneapolis)

I personally don't like Kiss, but have had deep thought about why no fighters use "War Machine" as their entrance music

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

Glad you are using your time smartly.

NYPD Blue (Brooklyn)

I was unable to attend last week's RAD, due to prior commitments, but like a good Freak did my homework and read the transcript: surprising was the amount of venom directed toward Canada and Canadians! Come on people, Dawson just plain got beat. Deal with it. Canada is not your enemy.

Bk don (Booklyn)

Berto v Jones doesn't happen b/c of money or b/c Berto's people are afraid of jones? Seems like they could fight at the boardwalk and do good business.

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

I am told Al Haymon does not like the fight for Berto.

George (Fontana, CA)

I dont know how much Longer I will be able to hang in this chatt today. Having stomach issues.

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

You're full of crap.

Dave (Ny)

What about Clottey Berto?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

For what purpose would anyone have interest in that junk? I have no interest in seeing Clottey at this point.

Rags (NYC)

Dan: If Top Rank isn't promoting Mike Jones, why the interest in helping promote him? I can't imagine any promoters doing something just to do it...

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

They have a close relationship with his promoter Russell Peltz and may do something together in the future.

Gus (DC)

How about Katsidis-Provodnikov?

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

Bombs away but it is unlikely. But would be a helluva fight.

David (Houston)

Vanes Martirosyan v Angulo?

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

Vanes would take it in a second I bet. He really wants Dzinziruk though.

Richard (Oxford, United Kingdom)

Dan, I've never been to a live fight card, but I've booked my ticket for September 18th. Really looking forward to watching the fights live, can't wait for Macklin-Barker especially!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

I love when fight fans actually GO to fights for the first time. It makes them even bigger fans. And you are going to a really good show that Frank Warren is putting on. Have fun.

sarcasm (IL)

Good fall HBO line up. eh?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

There's fall lineup planned right now?

Gutterdandy (nyc)

David Haye is promising to "dish the dirt" on the Klitschko negotiations in order to prove he's "not a b*tch." This should be good. I'm sure it's taken him and Booth all this time to concoct something -- otherwise, why didn't he reply immediately?

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

They needed time to make up their stories and get them straight.

Eddie (Santa Ana, CA)

How about a Berto vs Quintana? what do you think?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Well considering I was there ringside on April 10 when Berto beat the crap out of Quintana I doubt it. So what do I think? I think you need to wake up.

JD (DC)

What's the verdict on the face paint for the KISS concert?

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

Trying to convince the wife. I will lose. Sometimes you gotta pick your battles.

Mike (Worcester)

DANgerous Dan. Like a couple of the other freaks, I have airfare, hotel tix for Sept 18. I think this is one of the events which makes it hard as a boxing fan to travel to a big fight. All this money expended and now no payoff, and it's hard for many people to reschedule to see the revised date live. I'm a boxing fan first and foremost, but I will give kudos to the UFC for always having a card which can withstand injuries and fights falling apart.

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Stuff happens. It doesn't happen often but it does. Such is life. There are no guarantees (except that Bing will ask stupid questions, James Toney will mumble and Haye will duck).

Joe (Buffalo, New York)

I like the idea of Cloud vs Pascal, am i the only one?

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

You are not the only one. Excellent fight.

Paul (Fairfax, VA)

Hi Dan, I keep hearing the Golden Boy has a deal with HBO for guaranteed shows each year. Do you know how long HBO is tied into the deal? Wouldn't the product be better if it was more of a free market economy (e.g., when Showtime went to "Great Fignts, No Rights").

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

Yes, GB has an output deal for a certain number of dates per year. I believe the exisiting deal ends after next year. I have no idea why HBO entered into it. It is pointless to me. It gives them less ability to make the fights they want.

Kevin (Va Beach)

I just switched from Cox Cable to Verizon, and now I get Telefutura and Telemundo fights!

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

What took ya so long?

Michael (Chicago)

People! Freak Nation 101: NEVER use frequent flier miles to book a flight for a fight because if it gets rescheduled you are screwed. Also, if the fight is in Vegas NEVER book a room too far in advance...you can always get a great deal up to 1 week before fight night because hotel/casinos ALWAYS have great deals..ITS VEGAS.

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

Good advice.

Gil (NYC)

I hear Roger Clemens just hired Leonard Ellerbe to help with his memory

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley. The Freaks are in rare form today.

Marco (Portland, OR)

Hey Dan, in your opinion who is the greatest welterweight in history?

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

SRR.

Billy (Patchogue, NY)

I know he doesn't talk to the media on the record, but have you ever had a lengthy conversation with Al Haymon? What's he like?

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

I have. I'll leave it at that.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Dan, its funny how Berto gets the star treatment he does when he hasn't done a damn thing to constitute it. I mean really, what has he done besides a very, very narrow victory of "i only fight once a millenium" collazo?

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

I love Berto. He's a great guy, but I can't disagree.

ernesto (mckinney,tx)

Has sugar shane mosley retired or is he just taking a break?

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

Congrats for being the most uninformed person on the planet.

Will D (Cumberland, RI)

For those who get mad at the King Freak for not divulging his P4P list in the chat when asked because its a part of ESPN Insider... It is scrolled on the side of the screen, in its entirety, during the studio segments of every FNF!

Jimmy (scottsdale)

Dan-O-Meter, how much did Chad Dawson's earning price drop with the loss to Pascal?

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

A lot.

Gil (NYC)

Ernesto's question doesn't bode well for the buzz for Mora and Mosley

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

That's a good point.

Jay (MD)

Dan, to what do you attribute Manny Steward's insistence that they will not fight Hearns? His ties with the family, or Hearn's viability as an opponent?

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

I think both.

Rob (Halifax, Canada)

Huck looks to be in great shape. Godfrey not so much. I think Huck will make short work of him if Godfrey doesn't run...

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

I like Huck to win big.

Gerardo (AZ)

Dan, why is HBO not approving Aydin as an opponent for Berto? He is a deserving opponent, especially considering the alternatives.

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

They decided they didn't want to buy that fight, especially after his shaky win over Jo Jo Dan. They're the buyers. They can make an offer for whatever they like.

macho (Yucaipa)

I watched the Margarito hearing on top rank's site. I thing i found disgusting is how much they focused on the sparing liscense. It was ridiculous how that made that a focal point during the hearing.

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

It was ridiculous. Most people I know of in boxing had never heard of that rule either, not had I. It was a technicality.

Josh (Lincoln, NE)

Where's Winky?

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

Who?

Derrick (Brooklyn)

It seems as if a lot of dates on HBO are already filling up, any possibility that Juanma-Marquez gets bumped to next year?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

That is on Showtime.

chuzen (st. louis)

do you think cabalero will ever fight at 126 again? it seems like no one in that division has any intention of fighting him

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

Yes, he'll get something.

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

after arreola fought last week, I thought he looked like garbage, and he still came in really heavy, but uve gotta give him credit, going the distance with BOTH hands busted? just wish he had as much determination in his training as he showed heart in the ring

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

Can't take anything away from Cris as far as his heart goes.

Mark (CA)

I think of all the running jokes on the chat Ellerbe takes the cake!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

What chat? No chat ever happened. Ever.

J (J-town)

Dan, I absolutely LOVE the Twitter updates. It feels like I have my own Bat Phone!!! The coverage of the Margarito hearing was especially valuable (I started to watch it myself, but it was soooooooo boring). I didn't think it was possible for you to treat us Freaks any better, but you outdid yourself once again! THANK YOU!!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

You got it. I am glad the Freaks appreciate it. I didn't have to do that either but thought the Freaks would like it.

Alex (Lancs, UK)

DTM "Bute makes big money even if he fights a hobo and they see no rush. They want the fight I think, but I think they are content to wait a little bit." Substitue Haye for Bute and I think that's why Haye isn't fighting the K bros...

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

Wrong my good man. Bute didn't spend two years trashing Pascal, signing to fight him and then pulling out, trash talked endlessly and said all kinds of crazy stuff only to run and hide when it came time to step up to the plate. If Bute did that it would be a different story.

Leonard Ellerbe (LV)

What steak dinner? Never happened. Oh, wait..that actually DIDN'T happen.

chuzen (st. louis)

dan has the cali commission ever apologized for missing the handwraps in margacheato's gloves? i mean, if not for brother naz, no one would even know about margacheato.

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

I don't think so.

Matt (Boston)

If you were on the board in Texas would you give Margicheato a license?

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

Based on the law and the criteria needed to get a license in Texas, yes. Actually, I don't see how they turn him down based on that.

Winky Wright (Dean's Office)

School is almost in session. I am preparing for the fall quarter. Angulo is going to be adjunct faculty this year, teaching the Art of Negotiations.

Andy (England)

DTMLong time reader, first time poster. Being a Brit i can see out boxers with rose tinted glasses. However i am a big David Haye fan and would love to see him fight Adamek. Who do you think wins that bout (I'm going Haye)P.s Loving the Twitter!

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

I'd like to see the Adamek fight too. It would be a terrific fight between the last two cruiserweight champs.

Marcus (Modesto, CA)

Hey Dan, if Pacquiao/Marquez III were to happen, which EVERYONE wants over a Cotto II or Margarito, what weight do you think they would fight at?

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

Probably like 143ish.

chris (philly)

Hello Dan, in your most recent blog you mention that you thought JMM won the first fight which he had with Pac. I've also read other articles (not by you) that mention that there was a error done by one of the judges which would have given the first fight to Pac - something to do with the scoring of round 1 where Pac knocked down JMM several times. I'm confused and would like your take on this. Can you enlighten me on this argument?

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

Had one of the judges scored round 1 of the first fight 10-6 (three knockdowns) for Pacquiao, he would have won a decision. Instead, the judge scored the first round 10-7. I scored it 10-6 and still had Marquez winning the fight.

Alex (Lancs, UK)

Dan you may have a point re: Haye/Bute. King Freak we salute you :)

jeff (Dearborn, MI)

Whats the latest on the paul williams - sergio martinez match?

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

Close, close, close.

Winky Wright (School os business)

We'll be having a special lecture from TKO Promotions in our first semester

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

That is hilarious. The Freaks are killing me today wit this stuff.

J in FLA (Merritt Island, FL)

I was watching some fights from the 90's the other day. What ever happened to Welterweight belt holder James Page? He looked to have promise then disappeared.

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

Prison.

Jay (MD)

The Ellerbe jokes may TAKE the cake, but in the house of JMM, urine may be used to MAKE the cake!

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

Relax.

Ruben (Seattle, WA)

Dan-O-Mite! You mention that Bradley-Alexander venue could be in New Orleans or Washington. Is it on D.C or State? because it would be amazing the have that fight in the Northwest.

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

DC, which would be great -- a rare home game for me. Maybe I'll invite the Freaks over for a BBQ. Well, not actually.

Admiral Ackbar (Rebel Alliance Ship)

IT'S A CHAT!!!!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

Legendary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know every line from Jedi so that is an impressive display of humor.

brian (scottsdale, az)

at least the ponce de leon/ escalante fight should be entertaining on the Mosley/Mora card, still, not buying it though.

Koichi (NYC)

I'll bring the potato salad.

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

OK, maybe you can come.

Steve (NJ)

Dan who has more belts, the WBC or an Old Navy weekend mens sale?

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

A question for the ages.

Cody (Tucson)

I'll bring the beer

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

So far we got beer and potato salad. Who's the slaw?

Boxing Newbie (Hong Kong)

Adamek to KO Grant tomorrow??

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

I think so.

Richard (Oxford, United Kingdom)

I bet all the guys over at GBP are jumping for joy that the Juanma-Marquez fight is off. Now Mosley Mora might not tank quite as badly!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

They are not disappointed, let's put it that way.

John (Phoenix)

Jose Suliaman said I can bring you a diamond spatula for the burgers.

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

For a small sanctioning fee, of course.

chuzen (st. louis)

jmm is bringing drinks, too

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

NOOOO!

Chris (Los Angeles CA)

D$ - Mayweather will bring the chicken salad.

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

I knew that was coming!

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

And let me guess -- David Haye won't show up because he'll be ducking the BBQ right?

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

And Ellerbe will just say the BBQ never happened anyway.

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

But Ross Greenburg will admit that it did indeed happen and that he enjoyed my wife's homemade mango salsa.

Koichi (NYC)

Random question, have you ever been to Jimmy's Corner on West 44th Street in NYC?

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

Yes, many times. Awesome place if you're a boxing fan.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Dan, did you ever see the KISS movie that was on network TV in the late 70's?

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

Definitely, and now that it's on KISSOLOGY 1 DVD set it can be watched anytime.

John (Phoenix)

Ariza will bring the juice!

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

Hey now!

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

True.

Zim (Boston, MA)

Evander will bring the corn, but it'll only be an ear and a half.

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

OMG!!!!!!! CLASSIC!

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

I'm freakin dyin over here with this BBQ stuff.

Jay (MD)

And Cris Arreola is already on the road to your house.

Bruce (Alexandria, VA)

I'll bring milk In a carton with Winky's picture on it.

Hinrich (Germany)

Hey Dan, who promotes Roman Martinez? He is good, undefeated and entertaining. And a puerta rican with their proud boxing tradition. Why don't we see him more often? A fight between him and Jorge Solis would be a very HBO-Undercard.

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

He's with Peter Rivera. HBO isn't in that weight class at all right now. His last fight was on a PPV undercard and his next fight will be on in the UK.

JMM (Vegas, NV)

I'll make the special punch!

Chris (Los Angeles CA)

D$ - Please don't let Panama Lewis be the bartender!!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

Gimme the drink! The one I mixed!

DeMarcus Black (Las Vegas)

Dan, how come you don't "re-tweet" some of the better Freak tweets you receive? Or are you still trying to get everything figured out

Valuev will eat a lot and then go, you know...

Matt (Boston)

Floyd Sr. will bring the Taco Bell

Pacquiao can bring the HGH.................as long as the date for the BBQ isnt random

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

Low blow, one point deduction. Keep it clean.

Koichi (NYC)

If you invite Angulo he'll price himself out by requesting only Kobe beef burgers, 30 lb lobsters and Don Perrignon

John (Virginia)

Chad Dawson will contribute sour grapes!!!

Joe (Buffalo, New York)

Margarito can bring the Pinata made of the handwraps he used against Cotto

Lennox Lewis (BBQ Invite Response)

Absolutely. Definitely.

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

I'm dying with all of your BBQ suggestions. Unreal the power of the Freaks.

DeMarcus Black (Las Vegas)

What ever happened to the Haikus? Those were wonderful. For old time's sake: BAD CHAD WON THAT FIGHT / PASCAL ONLY TOOK ONE ROUND / I AM GALE VAN HOY

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

Hall of Fame stuff.

Lee (Norwalk, CA)

I'm LOLing at this BBQ stuff!! ESPN pays you to do these chats? Awesome!

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

Don't tell anyone.

Lampley (HBO)

I've got the fireworks! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

Holy crap that is hilarious.

Chris (PA)

Joan Guzman will promise to bring 2 lbs of macaroni salad but show up with 3

Marc (Malden, MA)

If there's a pinata, Dawson will only take 1 half-hearted swing at it.

Richard Schaefer (GBP Office)

I would like to sign into an exclusive BBQ date output deal as soon as possible

Zab Zudah (Brooklyn)

I'll sneak off during the main course and smash your shower up real good.

psycho (LaLaLand)

Roy Jones: you didnt invite me? Y'all musta forgot!!!!

Ian (Pembroke Pines)

Bob Arum says he can make a BBQ in Macau.

Greg P (Staten Island,NY)

Dan, who would've thought an innocent BBQ comment would lead to one of the funniest moments in chat history?

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

You're telling me. I am sitting here at my desk with tears running down my face I have been laughing so hard.

Harold Lederman (Dans Backyard)

Lampley: "Dan squints his eyes and looks at me through the smoke coming off of the cue, as if to say, those -- burgers -- are -- done."

Bing (Philly)

Why do people have BBQs anyways, I mean you can make the same food inside your house. Why bother going outside to make food?

psycho (LaLaLand)

Andrew Golota: BBQ's run for too long, I quit

Don King (Florida)

This barbecue will be watched in over 170 countries.

Floyd Mayweather Jr (Las Vegas)

Can anyone give me a burger today I'd be gladly to pay you back on Tuesday after I pay my rent for my Las Vegas office

James Kirkland (Texas)

I hope the BBQ will be after Spetember 17th.

Gus Johnson (Los Angeles CA)

D$ - BAR-BE-QUE!!!!!!! UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!

Emmanuel Steward (HBO)

I am so overwhelmed with BBQ comments I can't even find any boxing questions or comments!

Andrew (Louisville)

The Danterbury Tales - This week you became the second twitter account whose tweets I have shipped directly to SMS for instant viewing. The first account is a Kentucky basketball blog. That's how much I love your work, I willingly obsess over the musings of a Duke (eww) fan. Great job on twitter sir.

Dan Rafael
  (2:39 PM)

Thanks. You can also come to the BBQ.

Anthony (NY)

Allan Green will challenge someone to an eating contest but complain he didn't have enough time to train. He will be outeaten later in the evening and complain he had too much time to train.

Roberto Duran (Panama)

No mas! I'm stuffed!

Joseph (Texas)

Wow, even I'm impressed. Pretty funny stuff. Now back to business. Does a fight the magnitude of Bradley/Devon warrant a promotional tour? Maybe LA, Chicago, NY?

Dan Rafael
  (2:43 PM)

I think they'd have a press confernce at the site of the fight and perhaps one in NYC or LA. Maybe one in St. Louis, but not a big tour or anything.

Arthur Abraham ((DQville))

We'll bring the punch, but it may be a little late

Oscar De La Hoya (Los Angeles, CA)

We are close to finalizing this BBQ!

Liev Schreiber ((HBO))

I just signed on to narrate 24/7 - Dan's BBQ.

Don King (six months post bbq)

I accept your invite to the BBQ

Adam (DuPage)

So I'm writing up the BBQ invites? How many need to be addressed to Ricky Hatton?

Dan Rafael
  (2:44 PM)

Just one.

tristan (palo alto , CA)

Panama Lewis said he doesnt want stuffing.

Kermit Citron (Puerto Rico)

Dan do you have a pool with a diving board I can use?

James Toney ((MMA))

I'll bring the fwaewugifdsfsdiu.

macho (Yucaipa)

Any chance Bradley/Devon or Martinez/Williams II lands in California?

Dan Rafael
  (2:48 PM)

I dont think either will.

Paul Briggs (Laying Down somewhere)

Dan, is there gonna be a pool at the BBQ? I might wanna take another dive.

Paul Williams (running scared)

We will RSVP, then issue a vague apology to everyone after we fail to show up.

Joshua Clottey (Ghana)

My goal for the BBQ is just to survive until the end of it.

Yuri Forman (Rehab (Physical))

Dan, is this going to be kosher?

Miguel Cotto (PR)

I'll only go if my uncle isn't coming.

Antonio Tarver (Showtime)

Got any excuses??? For not coming to the BBQ Roy???

nathan (austin)

Max Kellerman says this is the best bbq since Pernell Whitaker's bbq.

Ricky Hatton (Hatton Wonderland)

After 12 courses I'll bet I'm ahead on pints.

Dan Rafael
  (2:56 PM)

I have lost control of this chat completely.

Dan Rafael
  (3:00 PM)

I have been knocked out by BBQ comments. This is insane!

Teddy Atlas (NYC)

Call your friends! This BBQ IS SOMETHING SPECIAL

James Prince (n)

I will chip in for this BBQ, but will need 20% of every BBQ you have for the next 3 years after this.

Michael Wilbon (DC)

BBQs have been on the downslide for years. They're being overtaken by potlucks.

Matt Godfrey (Quivering in Germany)

I can't make it Dan. I was saving my appetite for the BBQ, but then someone told me it was canceled and I ate a banana. Thus, even though I quickly learned that the BBQ was back on my head just isn't in the right place to be eating burgers and dogs. But I still want to be invited to all the big BBQs for the rest of my life.

tristan (palo alto , CA)

Ward prefers hometown BBQ

Humberto Soto (Mexico)

I'm tempted to come to the BBQ but I think I will just attend a smaller, less intimidating event instead.

Boxing Commission (CA)

Danno---Due to some unsavory characters showing up to your proposed BBQ, we have denied your request for a BBQ license in Cali?

Alfredo Angulo (Somewhere where dumb people live)

I'm sorry Dan, I'm going to need a guarantee of at least 1 million dollars before I can eat your hot dogs.

Barack Obama (White House)

Let me be clear: Dan's BBQ will be a turning point in boxing history!!!

Don King (BBQ)

Only in Dan's Backyard!

Bob Arum (Las Vegas)

I refuse to go, I only attend BBQs in my house

Charles (DFW)

If Michael Grant were to somehow beat Adamek on Saturday and, more improbably, win a title belt, would that be the greatest Cinderella story since Braddock over Baer?

Dan Rafael
  (3:06 PM)

At last a boxing question! It would be incredible. Very unlikely.

Brandon (DE)

random question did you give all three fights to Barrera in the Morales trilogy

Dan Rafael
  (3:07 PM)

No, I thought Morales rightfully won the first fight. I was at No. 2 and 3 and thought Barrera won both.

Patricio (SoCal)

Is Mercito Gesta ready for a title fight? What's your take on this kid?

Dan Rafael
  (3:09 PM)

He looks promising. I'm not sure he's ready for that level yet but I look forward to seeing him on Telefutura tonight.

Julio (chicago,Il)

Hey Danimal, what has happen to edwin "la bomba" rodriguez when is he fighting again?

Dan Rafael
  (3:10 PM)

He just fought recently and is supposed to be back in early October.

Matthew (UK)

Dan, any idea when your p4p best BBQ list will be up?

Keith H (Seattle)

I can only imagine Mrs. DTM's reaction when she reads the transcript on what will now be known as "The BBQ Chat."

Dan Rafael
  (3:12 PM)

This will always be known as THE BBQ chat.

Jim Lampley (HBO)

Let's go ahead and call it: The best BBQ in the history of modern backyard BBQ's

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Just catching up Dan, and this has got to be the funniest chat I've ever been in with the freaks. I haven't laughed this hard all year

Dan Rafael
  (3:14 PM)

Tell me about, it's had me cracking up for an hour.

Sergio Martinez (Argentina)

Look, I'll bring half the food/beverages if I have to JUST INVITE ME ALREADY

Ricardo Mayorga (BBQ)

Anyone need Smokes?

Burt Sugar (New York)

This has the potential to be the 28th or 29th best barbecue in the last 100 years.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

I'm bringin my petition-- http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/dan-rafael-for-commentator/

Dan Rafael
  (3:15 PM)

You are one committed Freak.

Jose Sulaiman (Mexico)

I would like to sanction this BBQ for the WBC Interim Intergalactic Diamond World Grilling Championship

Mike Tyson (Las Vegas, NV)

Will you be serving anyone's children?

Teddy Atlas (FNF)

If you're gonna have a BBQ, you have to behave like a cook. I think it might be getting A LITTLE HOT, for Mr. Rafael. I think he wants to control that prime real estate around the grill.

Luis Collazo ((Brooklyn))

I'll pass. I haven't been to a BBQ in years. I need a tuneup meal first.

Larry Merchant (HBO)

With all the pre-bbq smouldering, will this BBQ go down as a sizzling cookout, or will the flames of expectation be extinguished due to an empty propane tank?

Dan Rafael
  (3:17 PM)

Legendary.

The Bobfather (Corleone, Sicily)

(Flashes the bird at the BBQ) Here's what I think of your cookout!

Dan Rafael
  (3:21 PM)

OH my goodness Freaks, what a crazy chat. You've had me lauging harder than I have in a long freaking time. Thanks for the ridiculous chat. And follow me on Twitter @danrafael. Talk to you next week. Peace.
