Chat with Pat Yasinskas

Saqif Rahman (Irving, TX)

EYYY yo pat! what are the chances of my man william moore starting?!

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:49 PM)

Falcons would love to start him over Coleman. But Moore needs to get on the field and win the job. Gotta stay healthy. We're starting chat early. Fire away.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who do you think is the best Quarterback in the NFC South?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:50 PM)

Umm, I'm really going to step out on a big limb here and say Drew Brees.

John (Park City)

Hey Pat, what do ya think about this Mike Williams kid down in Tampa Bay. I believe this rookie may have a shot this year. Would you start him in a 12 team league?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:51 PM)

He's looked great so far. Only caution I'd give you is lots of rookie WRs have looked great in preseason and not done much in regular season. But I think this one's for real.

PTB (OTWTH)

are the panthers considering not putting thomas davis on the IR with the thought he can come back later in the year? whats the procedure on if they don't? PUP until week 7, then IR if they don't think he'll be there by the end of the year. I think its crazy if they don't IR him.

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:53 PM)

If they put him IR, he's out for the entire year. If they put him on PUP, he can come back for second half of season. I wouldn't count on him playing this year. Think he's headed for IR.

kevin (pa)

I know this name doesn't come up...well..at all, but what do you think of Gary Barnidge in Carolina? Any chance he has a breakout year at TE?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:54 PM)

He's not a bad player. But I don't think any Carolina TE is ever going to put up big numbers in their current offensive system.

Wes (Carrollton, GA)

Is there any word on the severity of the knee injury that the falcons rookie defensive tackle corey peters recieved last night?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:55 PM)

No, waiting anxiously for word on that one. Will let you know as soon as I hear anything.

Dwayne C. (Atl, Ga)

Hi Pat, do you think that the Falcons will change their bend but dont break defensive scheme to a more attack and aggressive style defense anytime soon. At times it is successful, but when we face the upper echelon teams of the NFL, it seems we get picked apart all the way up the field. With the Falcons being in the third year and having most of the key upgrades that we needed, it would make since to take more chances and ultimately create more plays. It may just be the preseason, tell me if im wrong Pat.

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:56 PM)

Think you'll see them get more aggressive. Weatherspoon can blitz. Also, having Dunta Robinson should allow them to take more chances.

PTB (OTWTH)

regarding beason at will, i'm in the school of thought you shouldn't use two people in new roles when one goes down (inserting connor and moving beason vs just replacing the will), especially when the person who is moving position is a two time pro-bowler at the position he is leaving. do you think the panthers decision is more player based bc beason is go good and can do it or more scheme based bc the willbacker is so important?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:58 PM)

Beason himself told me that he's excited about it because in the Tampa Two, everything comes through the WLB -- think Derrick Brooks.

Dan (Fargo, ND)

Is Derrick Ward's job in Tampa really in jeopardy? He did awful in the first week @ Miami, but I have a hard time believing he will slide down on the depth chart or worse.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:00 PM)

Somewhat. I mean, he was awful against Miami, didn't have a good camp and wasn't anything much last year. They've got some young guys that have been impressive. But not sure any of them are ready to be Caddy's backup. Bucs might have to keep Ward just as insurance because of Caddy's injury history.

JC (MS)

Thanks for the great work Pat. I think the bucs surprise alot of people this season! I just dont think they will be as bad as all the pundits say they will. Your observations are spot on..Organized!!... Front office, coaches, players and overall untangible desire to be a threat on all sides of the ball. First team looked good against Miami plus they beat the Saints at home last year! I was optimistic at best but Freeman looked good last week, tomorrow night will tell. This is a good team! Props to the Glazers!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:01 PM)

Wow, an optimistic Bucs fan. You should apply for a job with their ticket office. But, seriously, yes, I'm seeing some positives out of them.

Jim (Ocean Springs)

The auto update is off and won't allow me to turn it on. Any ideas?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:02 PM)

Any readers have answer for Jim? That's outside my territory and I don't know what to suggest.

robert (australia)

i've felt during this offseason kroy biermann was going to break out season and have a 10+ sack season this year and that we didnt have to draft a DE like many fans thought. Hes been great in the first 2 pre season games.... do u think i was onto something?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:03 PM)

So far, Kroy is looking good. Coaches firmly believe he can have a pretty big impact this year.

Peter (ATL)

Falcons run D needs to "rise up," or else they won't live up to any of the lofty expectations you adn the rest of the media are gushing upon the Dirty Birds...

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:03 PM)

No argument on the run defense.

Spencer (New Jersey)

Pat, Matt Ryan looked solid last night but I'd like to see more 3 or 4 WR sets with Jerious Noorwood in the backfield. I think it would really open up the underneath route and allow him dump to an explosive safety valve.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:04 PM)

Agreed, but they're not going to show stuff like that in a preseason game.

George (England)

Do you think that Mike Smith's defensive/run first philosophy will in any way hold Matt Ryan back?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:05 PM)

Think you might see a little adjustment in offensive philosophy this year with a healthy Michael Turner and Harry Douglas.

Panther Bob (Charlotte)

With 4 talented quarterbacks on their roster, do you think any will become trade bait for teams seeking such help?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:06 PM)

No, Moore and Clausen aren't going anywhere. Nobody's going to trade for Pike or Cantwell because the entire league knows Panthers will have to cut one of them, so they're not going to give up a draft pick.

JM (GA)

i know the Falcons had some starters out and its only pre season but did the atl defense look soft in the middle just like last year?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:07 PM)

Yes, it definitely did. But like you said, it's preseason and they weren't playing with their full cast.

William (California )

Derrick Ward needs to be Cut! I know Smith and Huggins are both undersized but are extremely Fast and gifted! Who else is undersized Chris Johnson! Not saying in any way that these kids are him! But they have more talent then Ward ever will! Ward needs to get his exit! Buccaneers need to move on!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:07 PM)

Could happen.

Joey (Vero Beach)

Hey Pat, Whats up with Clifton Smith i didnt see him in the fin game? and i just got my Season Tickets for the Bucs this year. Good Idea??

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:09 PM)

Believe Clifton's healthy now and you should see more of him. Sure, good idea to buy tickets. I think they'll at least be competitive this year.

Michael (Orlando)

Pat, Im very disapointed in Bucs fans this season... Its really dishearting to know that we are going to face multiple black outs this year... espeacially the home opener against the browns which I guarntee the bucs will win.... What do you think the problem is here?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:11 PM)

I'll summarize as quickly as possible: Economy, last year's 3-13 record and the fact that there are a lot of other things to do (cheaply) on a Sunday afternoon in Florida. If Bucs start winning, stadium will fill back up.

Kyle (Atlanta)

Pat i am kind of worried, everyone, adn I mean everyone, likes the Falcons this year to make the playoffs if not win the division. This team has never done well with high expectations in the past.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:11 PM)

Might be time for all that to change.

Ken (Pineville)

So how long do you see Jarret holding Bradon Lafell off (if he hasn't already lost the #2 position)?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:12 PM)

I'm guessing LaFell starts opening day.

Joe (New Mexico)

Pat any early word on the Bucs DT Price? I know he is injured but he has to have shown a lil something good or bad.....

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:13 PM)

He started off great before the injury. He was back at practice when I was out there Wednesday and Raheem specifically mentioned him as a guy who had a good practice. Sounds encouraging.

Panther Bob (Charlotte)

Exit to the blog and reenter via the link.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:14 PM)

Suggestion on the auto update. Thanks Bob.

Bruce (Tampa)

In the Bucs vs Dolphins Game Michael Spurlock made an amazing Sideline play that I think should have been noted... Do you see Spurlock jumping into the Reciever rotation for the Bucs this year?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:14 PM)

At best, Spurlock could be a fifth or sixth receiver.

Joe (New Mexico)

Pat am I the only one who wants to give Ward another chance? I mean it is his only 2nd year in the pewter.....

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:15 PM)

Maybe Ward should start acting like he wants another chance and going out there and showing something. That would help his cause.

DMAN (St. Paul, MN)

Pat, if I've got the 6th pick where TDs count the same for QBs - would you take Manning or Rogers over Ray Rice. I'll assume Gore/Turner wouldn't be in the debate? Thanks!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:16 PM)

I'd check with our fantasy experts on that one. If you saw my fantasy team's record last year, you'd know I'm not the guy to answer fantasy questions!

Billy (g-vegas, NC)

What are your thoughts on Greg Hardy? Any chance of him starting this season? Word is he had a great camp and first preseason game

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:17 PM)

He's been great. I think they'll open with him as a situational pass rusher. But he might be able to work his way into the starting lineup.

Bill (Laplace, LA)

Hey Pat, regarding Chilresses cimments the other day; its obvious they are trying to plant seeds in the refs head in an attempt to get a cheap penalty or two. When coaches whine like that,(it really was pitiful), do the refs listen, or just ignore it?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:18 PM)

I'd like to think refs don't listen. But they're human and there might be a little subconscious recognition there. But I don't really know.

JM (GA)

Didnt JPW look good the last night? I know Red is #2 but I think JPW will take over that spot soon dont you agree?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:19 PM)

JPW looked pretty good, especially throwing on the run. Not sure if Falcons are ready to promote him. But they at least thought enough of him that they took an extended look at him and gave him some reps behind first o-line.

Hal (New Orleans)

Remember when you answered Saints questions? What do you think of the 2nd year LB Casillas who's moving into the starting WLB role? He looks like exactly what Gregg Williams loves!!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:20 PM)

Sounds like Casillas has moved himself into pretty good spot.

Ken (Pineville)

Think fox is gonna do any wildcat formations with armanti during the season with run/throw option??

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:21 PM)

Wouldn't count on it being a staple. They're trying to teach Armanti how to play WR and that's going to take some time. Not sure you'll see much of Armanti early in the season.

Chris (Orlando)

Pat,Im very unconfortable with the QB depth of the Bucs... Josh Johnson makes too many turnovers, Carpenter is un impressive and there is no Vetran to provide stability in case the worst happens and Freeman gets hurt.... With as much that is riding on Raheem to win some more games why are they setting themselves up for disaster if something happens??

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:22 PM)

I'm with you. I've said all along I thought they should have brought in some sort of veteran as insurance.

Tim Tebow (Denver)

Would you ever ask me for my autograph?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:23 PM)

No, we in the media are not allowed to do that -- although it sounds like a couple guys broke that rule.

Nick Goings (NC)

admit it Pat the NFL is not the same with out me

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:23 PM)

Absolutely!!!

Joe (New Mexico)

Pat what is the main concern in the positions for the Bucs? FS? SS? DE?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:23 PM)

DE. Just can't see where the pass rush is going to come from.

Joe (New Mexico)

Pat do you see the Bucs signing a wiley old vet to back up Freeman?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:25 PM)

I would. But, if they haven't done it by now, they probably aren't going to.

Mark H (Greensboro, NC)

What's a phrase you don't want to hear for the rest of the preseason?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:26 PM)

"Predict the order of the NFC South". I'll do it once and for all in our season preview in a couple of weeks because I'm required to do it. Other than that, I don't like to waste time on predictions. They mean nothing.

Gregg (Tampa)

Why is Raheem so set on Keeping Zuttah as the starter when Clearly Vincent is the better choice?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:26 PM)

Think that's going to change real soon.

Joe (New Mexico)

Pat what is better eats than Lee Roy Selmon Steak house?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:27 PM)

Can't go wrong with Selmons.

Antonio Bryant (Cincy)

Face it Pat Tampa is nothing without me, They need me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:28 PM)

How you getting along with T.O. and Ocho? I'd pay money to be in that locker room!

rick (charlotte,nc)

Who currently has the inside track on the the #2 WR posistion for Carolina?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:28 PM)

Think it's going to be LaFell.

Scott (Clayton)

Hey Pat, I've gotten lucky and I was invited to the Panthers game tomorrow night against the Jets.....Box Seats!!!!! I have a Peppers Jersey, but now I have to get a new Jersey. I can't decide. I am stuck between 52 J. Beason, 28 J. Stewart, And 34 D. Williams.Any suggestions?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:29 PM)

Can't go wrong on any of those three. If you're looking to save money, though, you can get deals on Delhomme and Peppers jerseys.

William (California )

Cause morris wants to get Vincent up to speed in the Buccaneers offense! Vincent will start and will make Caddy a very happy man!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:29 PM)

Agree totally.

Jim (Athens)

Any update on Corey Peters knee? I'm starting to get worried about injuries for the falcons

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:30 PM)

Nothing yet. Not sure if coach Smith is meeting with media today, so we might have to wait until Saturday for word on that.

Carl (Iraq)

Hey Pat, Is there any chance that Arrelious Benn starts by mid season or is he yet another Bucs WR with tons of potential, that never meets expectations?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:31 PM)

Entirely possible. He hasn't been bad by any means. He just got off to a slower start than Williams. He's come on recently. He's not Reidel Anthony or Jacquez Green.

Bill (Laplace, LA)

Pat I agree, predictions now are worthless. And I can't for the life of me figure out why people get bent out of shape when their team is picked to not win the Super Bowl, can you explain?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:32 PM)

Can't explain. That's what I'm saying -- predictions mean absolutely nothing.

Josh Freeman (Tampa)

Pat, can you ask AB how it feels to be the highest paid slot receiver in the NFL? I would myself, but I'm too busy studying film with dedicated receivers.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:33 PM)

Slot receiver? Think might be being a little to generous to AB.

Ken (NY)

Being a panther fan from NY i have to deal with a lot of giant fans talking about the week 1 game. Correct me if im wrong but didnt the panthers win last year 44-9. So do you think carolina will be favorite in week 1? and shouldnt giants fans not talk until they win?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:34 PM)

Yeah and I've seen Fox coach some of his best games against the Giants. Besides, if he goes up there and starts Coughlin off with a loss, it could help open a job that I think Fox would jump at.

Panther Bob (Charlotte)

Hate to disagree Pat, but I think Jarrett gets the #2 spot; maybe later for LaFell, especially if Jarrett falters. But he's been good in camp when he's been thrown to.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:34 PM)

You could end up being right. But I just don't think Jarrett is the answer.

Kerry jones (Charlotte nc)

Pat i was wondering do the NFC south Blog have a headquarters? .Or is the headquarters your House?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:35 PM)

My house. Unless I'm on the road.

Jamie (New Orleans)

Pat, the Saints seem to be the most disrespected SB winner since the Bucs won their trophy several years ago. It looks like the Saints can fly under the radar yet again? Thoughts?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:36 PM)

I don't really like to get into the whole respect/disrespect thing. I think that's something fans make up. Bottom line is, you get respect if you go out there and earn it.

Matt (Lexington, KY)

Will Armanti Edwards be a significant factor at WR this year?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:36 PM)

My guess is not at least until second half of the season. He's at a new position and has a lot to learn.

john (Charlotte nc)

Pat do you agree with me that after watching the panthers play the Ravens last week. That this panthers team could contend with the Saints and the Falcons for the NFC south Title?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:37 PM)

I'm not ruling anything out with Panthers and that's because I think they still have a very good core group of seven or eight players.

Peter (Charlotte)

Fox absolutely hates dealing with the media, why in the world do you think he would want to caoch in NY??

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:39 PM)

Dream job -- he used to be a coordinator there. Job comes with built-in glitz and glamour of a big market. He was a media darling when he was there as coordinator -- but that was because he wasn't the point man. But Coughlin doesn't like dealing with media either. I don't think that would stop Fox from taking that job.

Brian (Charleston)

Given the history of teams in the NFC South going from worst to first...couldn't the Bucs be under the radar enough to pull a monumental upset this season? They did beat the Saints in NO last year.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:39 PM)

That would be very monumental.

John (NC)

who were you more impressed with when you went to carolina camp Jimmy Clausen or Matt Moore?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:39 PM)

I honestly thought they both looked very good.

Harry (Rock Hill)

Fox to the Giants is about as realistic as Cowher to the panthers. Foxy hates the limelight and as you know, hates having to share too much info with the media.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:41 PM)

I disagree, but it goes beyond the media stuff. Also, I don't think he minds the limelight.

Panther Bob (Charlotte)

Peter makes a great point! I think Fox is in Charlotte for the duration, and I think both he and Richardson knows that. Speculation to the contrary is media hype; Fox was under wraps in first stint in NY as DC, but he must know what it would be like for him to be the head coach. Fox stays in Charlotte.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:42 PM)

We'll see.

Kerry jones (Charlotte nc)

Pat do you think that Steve Smith will play in the Preseason and should he?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:42 PM)

I'd just save him for regular season. No sense risking injury to him and no need for him to prove anything in preseason.

Jamie (New Orleans)

Hi Pat, thanks for the awesome insight you provided on the local news here in New Orleans. A lot has been made out of the Derrick Brooks/Rickey Jackson comparison as you mentioned Brooks should be a first ballot entry. But Rickey Jackson's stats indicate he very well could have been a first ballot entry, but was snubbed for quite some time mainly because of the small market and the lack of playoff success. Agree or agree to disagree?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:44 PM)

A lot of people will tell you Tampa's a small market, too. Lee Roy Selmon's their only HOF member. I respect the heck out of Rickey and am thrilled he's in the HOF. But I'm sticking to my statement that Brooks is best player in history of NFC South.

Michael (Orlando)

Rex Ryan got a lot of flack about his Foul Language... yet Gruden was a huge potty mouth on the sideline and it was fully accepted... Is this Foul language thing being over blown??

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:45 PM)

I think so. It kind of comes with the territory. Haven't seen Hard Knocks and maybe they should tone it down when cameras are on. But I've heard a lot of strong language on practice fields through the years. Like I said, it comes with territory.

Justin (OKC)

Pat, what do you think are the chances that Foxy is still coaching the panthers after this season? I really hope the panthers keep him, they arent going to get anyone better

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:47 PM)

Let me throw a scenario at you: Let's say Fox goes out and goes 10-6 and Jerry Richardson comes and says, "John, here's a big check. We'd like you to stay as our coach". I can see some scenarios (if the right job is open somewhere else) where Fox would say, "Thanks, it was nice working for you, but I'm moving on". Just a hypothetical, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Kerry jones (Charlotte nc)

Pat why are you going to attend the Bucs vs Chief game tomorrow when it going to be a boring game. While the Panthers vs. Jets should be a great game.Should you not be back in Charlotte Tomorrow ?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:48 PM)

I don't make the calls. We don't cover preseason the same way we cover the regular season. I'm going out to Bucs game because I'm here in Tampa. If it were regular season, I'm sure I'd be on a plane heading out of town this afternoon.

Mark H (Greensboro, NC)

If I were Fox, I would hold out for the San Diego job. He has roots there too and the weather is awesome year round!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:49 PM)

That would make some sense, too.

Mark H (Greensboro, NC)

If Sams Mills went to HOF, who wins the fight over claiming him Saints or Panthers?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:51 PM)

He spent more time as a player with Saints. But it doesn't really matter. It's not like baseball HOF where you go in with one hat on your plaque. In football HOF, you'd go in as just a football player -- and I'm sure Sam would proudly go in representing Saints, Panthers and the USFL's Philadelphia Stars, who gave him his first real chance.

Panther Bob (Charlotte)

One of Fox's admirable traits (or faults) is his committment and dedication to his players, and especially his vets (i.e., look at Delhomme last year). I think this loyalty extends to ownership as well. Richardson gave Fox his first HC job, and I don't think Fox will treat this any differently than his players. Fox will be in Carolina as long as Richardson wants him.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:52 PM)

Very nice thought. But I'm not sure that's really the way it is.

Jim (Ocean Springs)

Just my opinion, as you have yours, but Rickey Jackson was better than Brooks--period

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:52 PM)

Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Joey (Vero Beach)

Hey Pat, Im gane be at the KC Bucs game, Where u sitting?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:53 PM)

Press box. But, hey, if it's as empty as it sounds it might be, I might move down to row three on the 50-yard line.

Kerry jones (Charlotte nc)

Pat time is up we will see you next week.Enjoy the Bucs game tomorrow

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:54 PM)

Not yet, I'm going six more minutes!!!

Jamie (New Orleans)

Pat, are the Falcons in over their head with their marketing campaign - Rise Up - and will it create too much pressure(I hope)?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:54 PM)

Check out column on blog on that topic. I don't think they created too much pressure. I think they set the stage pretty accurately.

john (NJ)

do you think matt ryan cn take the falcons to the playoffs

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:56 PM)

Yes, I think that's very possible. But he'll need some help from the defense.

Chris (Kingston, Ont, Canada)

do you tampa signing ruud to a long term contract anytime soon? or are they just going to piss him off and he will walk at the end of the season?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:57 PM)

My guess is, if he gets off to a good start, they'll wrap him up during the season.

Brian (Greensboro, NC)

Pat, two quick questions:1. Any word on how Peria Jerry has looked for Atl coming back from injury?2. Is it really possible Fox will finally go away, whether it be to NY or, well, anywhere but here?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:59 PM)

They're bringing back Jerry very cautiously. They say he'll be ready for regular season. Yes, I think it's very possible Fox moves on.

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:00 PM)

Ryan, appreciate the question and your persistence, but Owen Daniels is outside of my NFC South territory.

Ian (Seattle )

can you compare Tebow to Farve?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:01 PM)

No.

Scott fowler (Charlotte nc)

Pat when you come to Charlotte to watch a panthers game.Dinner will be on you as last year i pay for your dinner at Ruth's Chris remember?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:02 PM)

Sounds fair enough. I'll talk to the real Mr. Fowler about that and we'll sort it out. Thanks to all for coming by.
