Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:02 PM)

Hello folks. Greetings from near New Orleans. I'll have to cut out at 3:45 to go to the Super Dome for Texans practice.

SprungOnSports (Long Island)

How has David Garrard looked and how much trust does the coaching staff have him right now?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:02 PM)

He looked the same when I was there. Erratic and inconsistent. They have faith. But if McCown totally outplays him through the preseason, they could have controversy.

Scotch Ale (Rochester NY)

We grabbed the #1 pick in our draft. PPR league. Is there anyone worth grabbing other than Chris Johnson? Do you see their offense being diverse enough to allow teams to not focus on him? Will the loss of Lendale help or hurt more in your opinion? Cheers Paul!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:03 PM)

Teams focused on him last year. What else where they focusing on? I'd take him.

Val (Olympia)

Will Ringer ever be a 20 carry time back?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:03 PM)

Not this year. Maybe some day.

Craig (Nashville)

What is the status of the law suit of titans vs U.S.C. & "that couch"? and does Chris Johnson (hopefully) show more respect for his linemen on the field than he does off the field (like the ESPYS)?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:04 PM)

He's never disrespected his line before. I give him the benefit of the doubt and think he just forgot. He bought them Rolexes with a special inscription after the 2,000-yard season. That lawsuit will take forever, there won't be updates in short order like this.

matt (pittsburgh )

hey paul do you think coach fisher finally has his super bowl team this year? i hope he wins a super bowl hes such a underrated head coach thanks!!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

No, I don't think they are even a playoff team.

Matthew (Baltimore)

It looks to me that every position group for the Jaguars is either the same or better than last years team barring injuries. Mike and Mike are predicting the Jags win 2 to 3 games fewer this year than last. What gives? Is thier schedule that much more difficult?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:06 PM)

Well the NFC East is way tougher than the NFC West was, and they had some duds against the NFC West last year. A team can be better and its record worse because of circumstances. If they are better at wide receiver, but the Colts are too and the Colts were already seven games better than the Jags, for example, then what?

jason (atlanta)

Why do people call manning the greatest REGULAR season qb ever like thats a put down or he should be ashamed? All his records, wins, and MAKING it to the playoffs every year makes me proud as a fan. im even proud to see him ,my favorite player break pro bowl records.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:07 PM)

He has the same Super Bowl record as Favre, and I never hear complaints about his playoff troubles.

jason (atlanta)

does the colts next man up philosophy include coaches? why did they give caldwell and now the new offensive cordinator the jobs instead of trying to get some known winners to take over a great team and a great offense?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:07 PM)

Caldwell sure was a failure going loss-less in his first 14 and taking his team to the Super Bowl.

Kris (San Antonio)

you've been watching the texans do they look like they can improve on last year or are theying taking a step back?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:08 PM)

Look a lot the same.

Mike (Knoxville)

Just read the titans are interested in brandon jones-why do you think they would be?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:08 PM)

You just READ they could be interested, and it's bad speculation. Not in the know about who's interested, people presume they are unhappy or not good at wide receiver, know he did OK there and put them back together.

Finley Kuharsky [via mobile]

How come you can't support my campaign for Governor the way Longwell, Allen and Hutchinson supported the campaign to bring back Favre? I expect better from my press secretary...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:09 PM)

You raise a good point. Now take a nap.

matt (lexington)

there's some buzz about the (bad) state of the Colts O-line ... my question is this: how concerned should we be, really, if they made it to the SB last year w/essentially the same quality O-line?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:09 PM)

It's the pile up of injuries now that's the concern. Virtually the same group should do virtually the same job, if not a little better.

kraig (maryland)

just how good is this Colts Defense... is it the best in the Manning era?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

Potentially.

Peyton Manning (Indy)

Will I follow in Bretts footsteps and dangle my team on a string til they beg me to keep playing for them?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:11 PM)

No you won't. Not even close.

Tyler (Houston)

Simple question. Texans - playoffs or not?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:11 PM)

Not a shoe-in by any means. Should contend.

Shaun Phillips (Tennessee)

What are your thoughts on Jeff Fisher basically acting like nothing happened with LeGarrette Blount. Obviously the kid is a thug and has a history of anger problems, should he not take it a little more seriously?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:13 PM)

SO two punches, no matter the provocation, equals a history of anger problems? You have insight into this from sitting down with him?

Brian F. (Jacksonville, FL)

I don't understand why Garrard could get a pass for the entire preseason. As I wrote about earlier in the week, if David continues to show no progress while Luke progresses (in games 2 and 3) why shouldn't McCown get a shot with the first teamers in game 4? David is a career .500 qb with maybe 3 fourth quarter comebacks to his name. Failed to beat the Colts the past two years in crunch time. They dumped Leftwich after poor preseason performances.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:14 PM)

It's more about McCown than Garrard, I think. Even with a great preseason, I don't know if they will be sold on him. But I agree with you, he should get a fair look. They are drafting a quarterback next spring. Best guy should play now.

Scott (St. Paul)

I'm in a QB heavy league meaning 6 points per TD. Would you take a top QB at 6 or someone like Turner/Gore? I know you love Gore, but his receptions have to come down with Westbrook and this isn't a PPR. Love your work, thanks!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

I wouldn't expect Westbrook to play 16 games, that's for sure. I would absolutely take Turner there.

Colby (Iowa)

Whos the best QB in the AFC south besides manning?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

Unquestionably Schaub.

Thomas (Franklin, TN)

After seeing the Titans first pre-season game, I have mixed emotions. VY did extremely well his first series, but not so good on his second with the INT. The D looked solid with a few faults. From what you saw, do your projections for the season change at all and what can be done to fix some other problems you saw? Thanks for your work.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:16 PM)

Anyone who changes their projections from a preseason game is crazy. They shouldn't change much from four.

David (Houston)

Starting Free Safety for the Texans this year: Nolan or Wilson?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:16 PM)

Wilson at the start, but maybe Nolan eventually. Looked good on teams today.

Simon Kuharsky (Studying)

Yo dad, the guys wanna know if they can come over and have our draft here tonight? I told them we're a BYOB household. Speaking of, you might need to make a beer run.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:17 PM)

Might be tough, pal. I am in New Orleans. Bust out the Atlas.

joey marchy (jagsonville.com)

Also, are there any other GMs in the league that have their own radio show or is the Gene Smith show an anomaly in Jacksonville? Thanks PK!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:17 PM)

Mike Reinfeldt does an hour in Nashville. Polian is more than a GM and he has one. Not uncommon.

Brian F. (Jacksonville, FL)

Can Deji Karim jump Rashad Jennings on the depth chart?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:18 PM)

Not with the way JDR was gushing about Jennings yesterday.

Tyler (Houston)

How much of Arian Foster have you seen this preseason? what are your impressions?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:18 PM)

Not a lot. I like him, I want him to be what they think he is. But a two-game sample size is awfully small.

joey marchy (jagsonville.com)

Vic says the Jaguars receiver position is fixed long term, what are your thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:19 PM)

That's a little strong for me. They need a guy like Williamson or Underwood who can provide a big year. Put that guy with MSW and Mike Thomas and the kids behind them, and give them an accurate QB with good protection, and then it's fixed.

Brett Favre (Ice Tub)

Hey Pete, tell your buddy Farnley that I'm doing this for the guys and not for office. Maybe if Farnley was doing this for his guys they would support him more. Now excuse me but I have to go cash some checks.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

I am doing this chat for my co-workers. They asked and I just could not turn them down. It's a favor. I now have a marker.

Peyton Manning [via mobile]

Pete Kuharsky why did you post a question from my imposter? I'm surprised you didn't mark on his shirt. We haven't been communicating well and I feel left in the dark.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

If you were wearing a dark shirt, the pen mark wouldn't have been an incident at all.

Ulises (San Antonio)

Did you observe anything surprising from the Texans and Saints training camp? Curious as to how the Texans defense is shaping up.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:21 PM)

Brees is fantastic. They gave up pass plays like anyone else will. I wish they were better at Cody's spot and Wilson's spot.

Tom Selleck's Mustache (Tom Selleck's Face)

So, Do you think Kareem Jackson will win the #2cb job for the Texans this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:21 PM)

He is the No. 1 corner by default and has been since he arrived.

JB (TX)

So how do the Saints look?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

A little flat, I think. Heck of a pass offense, though. Especially if they stop dropping balls.

Jeff Fisher (Nashville)

Which should be feared more this season our offense or defense?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

I think offense.

Greg (Indy)

I am not a Curtis Painter fan at all, but I think people need to calm down a bit as he played the last two games of the year with no starters and against starting defenses. This preseason is different as he playing with 2nd team against 2nd teamers....Do you think people need to take it a little more easy on the guy...or is he that bad?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:23 PM)

I think it's an irrelevant job. No matter who they have in the No. 2 spot, if Manning goes down, they start losing. Painter's not been surrounded by much, but he needs to be better than that no matter who he's on the field with.

Miles (San Antonio)

Is Bernard Pollard becoming more of a leader on defense than DeMeco or SuperMario are?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:25 PM)

Ryans remains a big leader too. And Pollard is great. Mario leads with production when he produces. Not with any talk I can hear.

Lady Ga Ga (On Tour)

PK, need you to sign those release forms so Finley can join us on tour. Where did that dog learn to dance?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:25 PM)

Lots of time at home alone. Maybe he has lessons on the Wii?

Kris (San Antonio)

does jones still have a chance to take the #2 spot from walter?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:25 PM)

Seems so. I have 10 minutes with Kubiak later and will have a better sense then.

Justin (Gwangju, South Korea)

What's with all of this talk of Manuwai possibly not making it to the final roster for Jacksonville because of his contract? It looks like we are ok with keeping Smiley as a backup if he doesn't win a starting spot, and he almost gets as much money as Vinny. what gives?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

I don't have the numbers in front of me. But my sense is if VM doesn't win the job he'll be gone. Gene Smith isn't big on keeping former starters around in reserve roles.

JB (TX)

PK, I know you said that if the Texans lose the opener to Indy the season isn't over, but what happens if they get dismantled (entirely possible considering the starting corners)? Also, Charlie Casserly used to have a radio show here where he'd basically be on for half an hour and say nothing...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:27 PM)

If they bomb, Kubiak's got to piece them back together quickly and make sure they bounce back. A lot of this is on him giving it the right weight.

Clay (Jacksonville)

PK, any insider info on Tyson's nagging calf injury? The team says its a soft tissue calf thing. By my account the guy hasn't practiced full in over 10+ days. Any insight on this? Thanks,

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:28 PM)

It's a soft tissue calf thing. They'd rather he be out there, sure. But you can't push if he's not ready. And Sundays starting in September mean a lot more than practices now.

Hump D. (Doin the Dance)

What's the skinny on Eben Britten and Eugene Monroe, this year? Are they gonna make a big jump?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:28 PM)

Monroe should be great. And I expect Britton will be a lot better too.

Jacob Ford (Nashville)

Am i ready to step up and be a force on this d-line?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:29 PM)

Given the right amount of snaps that help keep you healthy and fresh, you can make impact plays.

cortland finnegan (tennessee)

i need to know! who will be starting on the opposite side of the field with me when it comes week 1. im hoping its verner...aren't you??

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:29 PM)

I'd have no beef with that. But it will be McCourty. And you are a long way from that guy. It actually doesn't affect you much.

joey marchy (jagsonville.com)

This rush the passer situation is getting a little scary. I keep hearing people say there's no way to evaluate the pass rush w/o Kampman and Alualu on the field. I feel like we should be generating more pressure regardless of those two. Can two people really make a huge difference in a team's pass rush?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:30 PM)

Of course they can. You are talking about half the line. Ever seen Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis? They change games.

Miles (San Antonio)

How awesome would Texans vs. Cowboys Super Bowl be? Would the Cowboys still have home field advantage or would the Houston fanbase drive up to Dallas?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

The host team gets a very small percentage of tickets, and the teams in the game don't get a ton either.

Tarvaris Jackson (Twiddlin' My Thumbs)

Hey Paul, you got a weekend game at your house? I need to find somewhere to get some playing time.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

Sorry, we're full.

Mike (Brentwood)

Do you think Verner beats out Mouton in the race for 2nd CB?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

Verner is definitely the second nickel behind Fuller. Third outside guy is a question still. But it shouldn't be Mouton.

Mickey (Santa Fe)

Are all signs leading to Owen Daniels being ready for the Texans Season Opener?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:32 PM)

From what I hear, yes. But that'll be the first we see him.

Tom Selleck's Mustache (Tom Selleck's Face)

Do you think Jack Del Rio's job is safe if the Jags stink it up this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:32 PM)

Nope.

Justin (Gwangju, South Korea)

I see a lot of potential in the Jags this year. How far can they go this season, in your opinion, if all of the rookie and second year guys live up to their potential?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

Maybe 9-7, second place in the division but not in the playoffs. And I think Houston or Tennessee would have to get hurt in that best-case Jax scenario. I don't expect any of that.

Lucas (Afghanistan)

Why don't some teams (like the Texans) ever go after big playmakers in free agency? Since the Texans have been on the verge for so long why wouldn't they try to pick some one up to put them over the edge instead of trying to make average players better?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

Who should they have chased that they didn't?

Brian F. (Jacksonville, FL)

Paul, were you at least a little shocked at how well Knighton played against Philly considering the concerns related to his weight?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

He looked good. But the questions related to his weight are about endurance over a full game, and he won't play close to a full game in the preseason.

Harris (Nashville)

Ive always wondered is Houston more of a Football town or do they have more love for the rockets? i remember that eddie george once said they loved the rockets more than the oilers.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:35 PM)

The Rockets were good and the Oilers were leaving.

Justin (Gwangju, South Korea)

What kind of year do the Jaguars have to have for Del Rio to still have his job next year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:36 PM)

Have to be on the upswing at the end and win at least seven, is my guess....

Terry (IA)

PK, I do agree that there's no point in obsessing about Indy's back-up QB situation, but just to play devil's advocate: the pats won 11 games without Brady. Why couldn't Indy do the same if Peyton were to get injured? (Provided Painter played halfway decently, that is)

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

The Pats and Cassel were a big time exception. There aren't enough quality QBs to start. Good backup situations are very rare. And Manning does more in Colts' system than Brady does in Pats -- except win Super Bowls.

Marc (Charlotte)

Should Antonio Cromartie turned down the interview on Hard Knocks until he actually knew all of his kids names?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

If he doesn't know all his kids, how could he know to turn down an interview?

mr clean (austin)

you seem to have an answer for everything don't you tough guy?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

Kind of the nature of this deal we're participating in right now, no? If I had an answer for nothing, you'd all be sitting quietly and it would be pretty boring.

Charlie (Nashville, TN)

Though it's clearly not his primary role, how has Craig Stephens been as a receiver this camp? It looked like the targeted him a couple times on Saturday.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

He's comfortable as a target.

Patrick (Nashville)

Is Bud Adams the only owner who seems to like keeping a coach around in this league?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

Guys last a good while in Pittsburgh.

Lucas (Afghanistan)

There might not have been many playmakers moving around this year but in the last two or three there where a lot. From Asante Sammuel to Micheal Turner to Albert Haynesworth to name a few. I know they aren't gonna gonna be Washington but they could at least make an effort to sign someone in free agency that is going to do something right? Like when Tate goes down why not go after Westbrook?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

Because Westbrook is done? Don't get caught up in the name recognition deal. They clearly know how to draft -- you know Mario and Cushing and Ryans and Daniels and Johnson because they do. Still, you crave recognizable names from outside. Colts don't get any and they do pretty well, no? What's wrong with that approach. Michael Turner, by the way, bombed last year. Haynesworth is a headache. You need those things for your team?

Rex Ryan (Hard Knocks)

*(&)*^)^)^)*^

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

&($*#@$^ you too.

David (Houston)

Who starts in Cushing place week 1? Will it still be Adibi or could Daryl Sharpton possibly beat him out?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

Right now it would be Diles in Cushing's spot and Sharpton in Diles' spot. Thanks for reading.

Craig (Nashville)

How long can Fisher go 8-8 before he's on the HOT SEAT?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

Couple years ago he was 13-3, no?

The Old Spice Commercial Guy (On a Horse)

PK, I'm on a horse!! Now I'm on the beach!!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

Please keep me posted on your whereabouts.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:47 PM)

OK folks, sorry to cut it short. But I have to get to the Super Dome to see the Texans. Take care. I'm close to 10,000 followers on Twitter. Hook me: @ESPN_AFCSouth.
