What do you think about the steelers sending Charlie Batch to Indy for a 5th round pick?
Hey everyone. Great to be here. Hmmm Mike, that does sound like a win/win. A 5th rounder might be a little steep considering that they might be able to sign Batch for nothing right after final cuts. But, that is an intricate offense and getting your back up in ASAP would make some sense from a learning/comfort perspective.
I love the Westbrook for SF, do you?
I do too. You can find some of my comments on the signing on Sando's blog-we talked a bit about it right after it happened. Again, good for team and player. I am sure Westbrook could not have been super excited about heading to STL (or Washington to a lesser degree), but in SF, the situation sets up well for him. Everyone talks about how SF is going to pound the rock behind their new OL, but A Smith is still most comfortable in the shotgun with spread principles-that suits Westbrook quite well.
Better TD-INT ratio this year. McNabb or Kolb?
I will say that Kolb throws more TDs-and more INTs. So, for the "ratio", that is a tough call.
If I had to pick a quarterback for the next 5 five years, I would pick Aaron Rodgers, no question... Is there a doubt there for you at all?
I am not knocking Rodgers at all, but I would probably take Roethlisberger (if I felt comfortable with his off the field behavior) and Rivers over Rodgers. Very tough call and I do see where you are coming from of course on this though.
When will the Chargers trade VJax?
I tend to guess that it will happen. Right before the season or a few weeks into it. Just seems like a deal isn't getting done and surely SD looks at themselves as a contender. Ideally, would like to see them get a player in return in some, way, shape or form.
I can really imagine Tony Romo having an awesome year-30+ TDs, 40k yards-but I am worried about the pass protection. Can you see him being able to stay upright enough to be a viable top 5 fantasy QB?
All very good points, esp with Colombo now being injured. Still, of course any QB can get injured, but I do think the protection is good enough for this O to put up serious points...and for Romo to be a heck of a FF QB.
What is the weakest area fr the Patriots right now?
Front Five-by that I mean the 3-man DL minus Warren and the OLBs. Not sure where a big pass rush will come from and while Wilfork is awesome, the DEs now have to be questioned. But, I see this O putting up a TON of points this year. Will pick NEng to win that division.
Matt, Will KC's two high priced DEs be at least medicore this year? I have a feeling unheralded Derek Lokey is going to turn in the best season of all their dlinemen.
The former LSU 1st round DEs have been horrible. Of course they didn't play the scheme at LSU-and they are talented young me. But SO much more is needed. I will keep an eye on Lokey as well.
how do you think Farve is going to do?
Well, esp early in the season before he wears down. Curious about the health of Harvin and Rice though. I also expect #4 to throw more INTs than last year-not sure that he can maintain that impressive pace of ball security.
What kind of upside do you see with Freeman in TB?
I see a lot of upside. Legit Franchise Signal Caller upside. Great physical tools. Still very much learning and must cut down on the mistakes, but his group of pass catchers now intrigues me going forward. He shows signs and all the off season reports have been favorable. Excited to watch him throughout the preseason.
Is Vince Young's floor Randall Cunningham and his ceiling Donovan McNabb?
From what I recall, Randall was pretty good. And I tend to think that his floor is much lower than that. Remember, his career looked very close to being done at this point last season. He did impress me though and I do think he can become a dynamic and stable starting QB.
Matt, who do you expect to have a better year: Nicks or Garcon? Lots of determining factors for both teams.
True, but I like Nicks better. He is higher up the food chain and he is more talented. I like Garcon, but it wouldn't shock me if he ended up as the #4 reception guy for Indy behind Clark, Wayne and Gonzo. Nicks is a Pro Bowler sooner than later.
Do you see Henderson (MLB) of the Vikings playing well this year?
Just depends on health. The guy is a very good player. Tough. Reads the play well. Obviously is protected extremely well. But how much did last year's injury take out of him?
How do you think defenses will play differently against the Vikings this year? Will AD become a greater focus for the Vikings this year?
Hopefully the Vikes' run blocking improves in 2010. If so, I would lean on the running game more than they did in 2009-and that includes Gerhart. But if they can't open holes, I would expect pretty much the same thing as last year...assuming Rice and Harvin are healthy.
Signing Westbrooke shows the NFL still has a long way to go in being concerned about the long term health of their employees. The guy should not be playing a contact sport.
I don't know that you and I know the answer to that. One thing about my job is commenting on injuries in any way, shape or form. I didn't go to med school. Did you? Maybe you did-how do I know? But the Niners' team doctor-and Westbrook's physician-must think that he is okay to play. I usually just go with that. But not bashing you-your point is valid.
You would take Roethlesberger?!! HUGE suprise! You're the ONLY "expert" who would ever have him as the answer, and yet yuo're not a homer. So aggrevating.
2 Rings. In the prime of his career. Elite physical tools with room to improve as he learns to read defenses and spends more time in film room. I could live in Kansas, South Dakota or New Mexico...and I would say the exact same thing about Ben. Oh-did I mention that he has 2 rings in his mid 20s?
If you were building a team around 2 players (1 offense, 1 defense) for the next 5-7 years, your players would be_________________
One of the QBs that I mentioned for sure. Just have to have a QB to win in this league. But, if QBs are excluded, I would lean towards Joe Thomas on O. On D, Revis comes to mind immediately. Would strongly consider H Ngata as well.
Aggravating Jim...and you are right, what has Big Ben do to win such praise? I mean he only has 2 rings.
Yeah, he's no good. I only picked him because I happened to grow up and live in Pittsburgh. You nailed in Jimbo.
Everything is talking big things for the 49ers this year, but behind Alex Smith??? I don't see it
I see them winning the division and losing in round one of the playoffs. That is a great start, but I wouldn't call it "Big Things". Some might be picking them to do more, but sure, Smith is a worry. I think he can do it with an excellent supporting cast and if they tailor the play calling to his abilities, but obviously this is his make or break season.
Honestly, the question was for the next five years. You're getting paid to tell me that Ben R. will have a better next 5 years than Peyton?
If it were 2 or 3 years-Manning for sure. But will #18 still be in the league in 2015? Wouldn't mind having Brady or Brees either for the next five either, but didn't mention any of these guys because of their present age.
Is Haloti Ngata in his prime better than Richard Seymour?
Seymour in his prime was a big time super star and I see him as a Hall of Famer. I love Ngata though. Can line him up just about anywhere. Makes everyone around him so much better. But, to say that he will play at a HOF lever like Seymour did in his day-I would say that prob won't happen.
Today's game is a passing league, yet the need to have more than 1 good RB is common in today's game- is that as counter intuitive as it seems?
I just think it is a wear and tear situation. Having two RBs as prominent runners isn't a new idea, but the guys who are hitting them now are noticeably bigger, stronger and faster than even 15 years ago. But, the game is also more specialized. A guy like Westbrook for example now has a niche as a 3rd down guy that every team covets.
matt in opinion where do uthink aaron rodgers ranks among active nfl qbs?
6 or 7 with the potential to go as high as #4 by season's end. My list goes: 1. Peyton 2. Brady 3. Brees 4. Ben-cause I am from Pittsburgh 5. Rivers then I would strongly consider Rodgers.
Aaron Rodgers is a stud and will put up huge numbers if he stays healthy
Agreed. That isn't the only thing that counts when playing the QB position but trust me, I am not a Rodgers-basher at all. The guy can play.
Hey Matt, hello from alien land. My question is with Favre's return, there are rumors that Rosenfels coudl be traded. Should my Bills be looking into to acquiring the veteran? I think it is a no-brainer. He would be better than anyone we have ont he roster right now.
He might be, but he also would not be the long term answer. Career #2 guy. Minny did seem to showcase him during their first preseason game. Wouldn't give up a lot for Rosenfels though.
Hey Matt! Are the Cheifs crazy not to make Jamaal Charles their undisputed #1 RB? He is so talented and has the breakaway speed. Thomas Jones should be nothing more than a third down back right?
Charles is also the far superior 3rd down RB. To me, Jones is just a backup RB who can bring more physicality to the position and should take 8 or so carries per game to lighten the load on Charles. I still think Charles has a monster season.
Are you expecting good things from Legedu Naanee with V Jax out and Floyd being the #1 in SD?
Rivers is the key. He is to the point now where he makes average players above average and below average players acceptable. It also looks like Mathews is the real deal and Gates will be the focal point. So I think they can win the West with little resistance...but mostly based on the accomplishments of Rivers. Side note: Could Rodgers do the same with SD's set of weapons? To me, that is what we don't yet know about him. Rivers is a great football player.
I tnink the Giants beat the Eagles for 2nd in the NFC east. Giants didn't lose their proven qb and are going to be upset about how last year unfolded. Agree?
They might win the division. Really like Eli. The D must be better. Emerging weapons. I like the G Men this year.
Rosenfel's to the Eagle's? I really don't want Vick as my QB if Kolb misses time.
I think you are stuck with Vick though. I like Kafka going forward though, but that doesn't really matter for 2010. Hear where you are coming from, but doubt that one happens.
Matt, how do you see the Texans RB situation unfolding? Arian Foster looked very promising in the final two games last year, but outside of his fumble syndrome Steve Slaton is very versatile as well. Is this a pure committee situation?
No, I think the roles become pretty defined and that Foster is the carry-the-load guy and I see Slaton as the changeup/third down guy.
Big time, long time Seahawk fan. what are your thoughts on my 'Hawks. I think their O could be better, but where is the pass rush gonna come from?
My thoughts are exactly. The O is intriguing. The OL will play better-I promise. Adding Okung and Gibbs will pay off immediately. I also think Forsett could have a real nice season.
Would the patriots ever try the wildcat? Considering all their weapons?
If so, very little. Can't really condone taking Brady off the field or motioning him to a WR position. This passing attack will be awesome. Weapons everywhere. Just sling it.
Tell me something you like about the Redskins!
Improving OL. I think Haynesworth is still a big time difference maker. Orakpo could be a stud in this scheme.
The Orange faithful and I are coming to Alleghany County for you and Big Ben. You were warned.
Keep your group of goons on your side of the state.
How much do you think that the additions of Suh and Best will help the Lions this year?
The O looks great. Should really step up. I love Suh as well and that DL should be quite good. But that back 7 on D is horrific. Det will let up a ton of points and the O won't be able to keep up.
Can you give me the top five picks in next years draft? Mine are Buffalo, Rams, Tampa Bay, Jaguars, and Denver(!). Thoughts?
Some good ones there! Off the top of my head, I would pick Buff and STL for sure. Prob Clev as well. I like the Denver call too. Give me Oakland as well.
Will the Bills make it to the playoffs?
Heard you on the radio and do you really believe that STEELERS can come out 3-1 before Big Ben comes back? Giving little respect to my FALCONS. Who would you like to see as their QB? Leftwhich or Dixon?
Falcons are strong. Actually, I will pick ATL to win the South this year. I do think that not having Babineaux for that first game is a big deal. Jenkins' loss isn't as big, but it is out there. Leftwich will start the season. If the game were in ATL, I would pick the Falcons...but it isn't.
Is D. Ware the best young pass rusher out there right now? How about Woodley?
In a previous question about who do I start a team with, Ware would be considered for sure. Great pass rusher. Woodley is getting there. Improving. If Ware is an A. Woodley is a B.
Brandon (Bellevue, Wa), I know you may laugh but my Bucs will be much imprved this year. If you are not a Bucs fan you would not know but believe me when I say we will be the surprise team of the year!
If you mean a "surprise team" in that they won't pick in the top 5, then I am on board with that. I see them improving, but certainly not contending. But they have some building blocks now.
To further your J.Charles point, is there another RB in the league -- save C.Johnson - you'd take over JC?
Plenty. I like the guy a LOT, but he isn't one of the best 2 or 3 RBs in the league right now.
Toughest division to win this year?
AFC East or AFC North. I see three real strong teams in each. Wouldn't shock me if Clev and Buff both went win-less in their divisions.
Did you just take a stab at Orkpo by saying that he could be good "in this scheme?" Didn't he have more sacks than D. Ware last year?
Not a stab at him. He was good last year-no question. But playing in a 3-4 is even better for him. I expect more in year 2-and mostly because of scheme.
Over/Under Delhomme's INTs this year?
20...but he only plays in about 10 games before being pulled
I have C Johnson and J. Charles from last year's FF roster in a keeper league. Is Charles worth keeping if I can save 3? Also considering Schaub because of the O he is in, but am conflicted. I could save only 2 and pick up a top WR, but Schaub will likely be the top QB avail. What would you do?
Keep Johnson and Charles. And be very happy about it. Strong core to build around.
What do you think about Green Bay vs Minnesota for the NFC championship?
Certainly a possibility, I am probably going to take Indy over GBay in the Super Bowl.
I dont get Schobel why would he retire? He finally had the opportunity to cherry pick a contender and play for them and he retires. I just don't get it. I mean why not the PATS!!!
Agreed. Seems like a good situation that he found himself in. He isn't real excited about playing in a 3-4 though-I get that. So maybe the Pats are not the best team. But plenty of teams could use a guy like Schobel...if healthy.
Matty, I remember you being high on S. Jackson last year, and he is a beast. But he is on team with such a low talent level, he inevitably wears down. Thoughts on SJax for this year?
In terms of FF, I liked him more last year. Actually, in my league, I was sitting at #9 or so and just barely picked S-Jax over C Johnson. I think I was higher on most guys than most experts. But I see a lot of the same with Jackson this year. Great player. Just not many TDs.
Tell M in DC that while Orakpo may be good he's no Ware yet..and to get his facts straight..they both had 11 sacks last year.
Julius Jones over Forsett really Pete Carroll
That is a little nuts. Like T Jones over Charles. Nuts. Do the Jones brothers have some kid of Jedi mind powers over coaching staffs?
Jets a little overrated and Dolphins a little underrated??
Check. Very much agree. Well said.
Hottest NFL cheerleaders?? Still Dallas or Miami got a case?
No idea...but it seems like a good project for me to really work on.
Do you think Kampman was a good pickup for Jacksonville?
I do. Again-if healthy. But you know what you are going to get from Kampman on every snap. Consistent. Productive. Should rub off well on the other young DL on that roster. They needed a pass rush so bad. He will help
Who starts at wr for the Bucs?
Williams for sure. Benn sooner than later. Stroughter in the slot. I like that group quite a bit when thinking about how they might be with an up and coming QB in a few years. In the meantime, K2 leads the team in receiving.
Who scores more touchdowns this year, Portis or Johnson? Any chance you see them splitting their division games this year instead of losing them all?
I would say that they are a 1 or 2 win team within the division. I also think Johnson has the bigger year than Portis. To me, he looked better of the two last year.
D-Ware in my opinion is the best defender in the NFL, does everything, but he just turned 28. If I needed a player for the next 5-7 yrs. I might go Revis, bc of his age. But Ware since 2006 has been a stud
Yeah, I didn't have all the players ages in front of me when I answered that. Would have guessed that Ware was a year or two younger than that. Revis is awful tough to dismiss. Don't forget about Ngata though.
Matt- Terence Newman is going to have a great year. He's going to reclaim is top 3 CB status...
Yikes. Top 3? Along with Revis and Nnamdi? He might step up. That I can buy. But you are over shooting it.
What do you think of Barrett Ruud? I've heard several writers say that he's overrated since all his tackles last year were made 6-7 yards downfield. I tend to think that has more to do with Hovan and Sims being in front of him.
He has to be so excited to have those two DTs now. He needs to be protected. Not a great take on MLB. But smart. Relentless. Good tackler. I like, but there are prob 10 ILBs who I prefer.
Revis looks like a safety playing CB...he's built much differently than most corners
Very strong. Low center of gravity. Well built. Exceptional balance.
Guys, I am out. Fun stuff as always. Take care!
