Good Wednesday to you all. Thanks for joining me yet again. Quick reminder about MMA Live, tomorrow at 1AM ET/10 PM PT on ESPN2. We are loaded. Dan Henderson, Pat Miletich and Brian Stann will all be at ESPN. Also expected to have interviews with King Mo Lawal, Tim Kennedy, and Bobby Lashley. And we will have highlights from tonite's WEC 50 show in Las Vegas. Alright, let's vent.
Hey J.A. How likely is a bout between Forrest & Bones Jones? I got Griffin via Submission. Not sold on Jones' cardio or BJJ yet. I think Forrest survives the early onslaught and picks apart Jones on the feet before Jones succumbs to exhaustion.
I think the fight has a good chance of happening. I think Jon Jones' next opponent will either be Forrest Griffin, Thiago Silva, or the winner of the UFC 119 fight between Ryan Bader and Lil' Nog. That said, I think Jones would beat any of them. Forrest may survive the early onslaught, but I don't think he'll get the better of Jones on the ground, if it goes there.
Jon, love the chat. Who decides Fight/KO/Sub of the Night? Is it Dana or what? Thanks
The UFC brass all has input. I'd imagine Dana, Lorenzo Fertitta, and Joe Silva all have a brief discussion shortly after the PPV.
did shane carwin use steroids?
No one knows right now but Shane. I think all of us in the media (and fans) are anxiously awaiting his response. But steroids/PEDs are a part of all professional sports. I think more guys actually use PEDs than don't.
JA. I'm back after a pretty solid layoff. Can I get some predictions for WEC tonight?
Good to have you back, Dan. I like Shane Roller, Cub Swanson, Scott Jorgenson, and...Joseph Benavidez to upset Dominick Cruz and become the new WEC bantamweight champion.
Long time lurker here. What's your opinion on Carwin smack talking with Big Country when it seems like he may have bigger fish to fry?
Well, he's certainly fueling the fight by acknowledging Roy Nelson. And, b/c both are top 10 UFC heavyweights who are coming off losses, the fight makes some sense. The fight I really want to see is Carwin-Dos Santos, but Junior is on a winning streak and will get a title shot. There just aren't a ton of possibilities for Carwin right now. Perhaps one of the younger guys, like a Todd Duffee or Pat Barry. Not sure.
Do you think that Lashley will finally fight a contender after he wins this weekend?
Man I hope so. Hoping to have Lashley on tomorrow to get some answers.
Jon , what up with Shane Carwin and the steroid scandal? Say it ain't so!! Carwin seemed like such a stand up guy.
It definitely was disappointing news, but I'm gonna give Carwin the benefit of the doubt until we hear his account of things. I also think he will rise above it and will be the UFC heavyweight champion at some point. The organization is firmly behind him.
Leben v Belfort would be fun until the Crippler is put to sleep.
I'd like to see that. There are all of a sudden a lot of intriguing fights at 185.
Cub Swanson? I'll remind you of that pick next week JA.
Sounds good. I am increasinly reluctant to make predictions. Anything can and does happen in MMA. I am starting to realize that predictions are really just a waste of time.
FEG - please pay Bibiano! I want to see him fight.
Long Time, No Chat JA. Everything has seemingly gone Dana and the UFC's way with Fedor losing, Silva winning, etc. Is it worse for UFC or MMA as a whole if Toney beats Couture?
What's up, D-Rube? I think a Toney victory over Couture would be difficult to absorb for all of us associated with MMA. Toney certainly has the power to get an early KO, and he is fighting a 47-year-old. Let's just hope for all involved it doesn't happen.
Chost, Any celebration plans after Pettis and Milwaukee both win tonight and we get Henderson-Pettis here in December?
I will pour out a little liquor on Milwaukee's behalf. Our chat always has nice representation from Wisconsin.
Why did sonnen call out the count on MMA live this week?
Because Bisping had taken a shot at him on Twitter.
Are you excited about Roger Huerta fighting Eddie Alvarez in a non-title bout? Looks pretty good on paper.
I am highly excited to see the matchup. Just wish it was a different date. I, along with the rest of the MMA media, will already be in California for Lesnar-Velasquez. May have to email Bjorn Rebney and implore him to push the fight back a week!
Thanks for your continued passion for the sport. What are you hearing about possible locations for UFC 123?
Thanks, Eric. I read something about Chicago as the frontrunner for UFC 123.
Big fan of you on MMA Live. What upcoming card are you most looking forward to watching?
Thanks, Bobby. For me, it is definitely UFC 118. Not only do we get the Penn-Edgar rematch and James Toney's debut, but it's in my hometown of Boston, Massachusetts. And one of my best friends is fighting on the card as well. August 28th can't get here fast enough.
They couldn't find anyone else to face Mir!?
I actually don't have a problem with Cro Cop getting the fight against Frank Mir. I don't think Cro Cop is a main-event worthy fighter at this stage of his career. But amongst the possible options (few), I think Cro Cop makes sense.
Obligatory boxing question. How big a blow did Dawson's stock take? Pascal is a beast
Just wondering if Chad Dawson learned from the loss. He's been reluctant to take risks throughout his career, even against lesser opposition. He needs to have a sense of urgency early on in fights. This is a guy who some mentioned as a future HOFer. Not sure he gets there now.
Isn't Carwin a dog to Lensar, Velasquez and Dos Santos? Seems like he has a hard time becoming champ with those 3 guys around.
I really believe all 4 of those guys are pretty close on paper. I think Junior Dos Santos is clearly the 4th best fighter in the bunch. Carwin might not be favored in a rematch with Brock Lesnar or in a fight with Velasquez, but he'd have a strong chance to win. This guy was seconds away from being on top of the MMA world.
Alhoa Jon!! When BJ beats Edgar and if Kenny beats Maynard. Is there a Penn/Florian 2 match up next? If so any interest in that fight?
If Florian's win over Maynard is decisive (i.e. a finish), I think he'll have a great case for another title shot. I know Kenny would love another crack at B.J. Penn, but perhaps an Edgar win would be the better outcome for him. Not sure how enthused the UFC would be about Penn-Florian II.
So what do think is next for Anderson Silva? I really want to see him move up to light heavyweight for good.
Chael Sonnen was adamant that he will be Anderson Silva's first opponent when the Spider's ribs are healed. I think the UFC wants to make that rematch, and hopefully Silva is receptive to it. Anderson seems content to stay at 185, for now.
How are guys like Ben Saunders getting cut while Phil Baroni still has a job?
I don't think either warrants a spot on the roster, but Baroni keeps a job b/c he is a recognizable name. People just know who he is. Saunders will likely get another shot in the Octagon at some point, but he's too inconsistent right now. And I would like to see a little more competitiveness while the fight is going on.
You really think they have Bones fight Bader? Seems like they would want to groom them both, a la Carwin and Cain.
You could very well be right. I just think, at some point, the grooming process has to come to an end. Dana White told MMA Live that Jones' next opponent would be in the Top 8 at 205. And a lot of those guys are tied up. We'll see.
People are saying Rampage matches up badly with Machida but I don't agree. I say Rampage KO!
I say Machida is a difficult matchup for anyone at 205. Rampage really needs to put in a great camp and he'll have a good shot to win. Both are among the best in the world. It's just a terrific fight and a tough one to forecast.
If Lesnar stops Velazquez and JDS in back to back fights, who else on the current UFC roster has a chance against him?
Shane Carwin. And that's about it, right now.
well jon what are your toughts on the mir-cro cop fight?
I like the fight, Owen. I think it'll be a good litmus test as to where both guys are at this stage of their careers. For Frank Mir, a loss likely means he will never fight for the title again. For Cro Cop, a win means he still can beat a Top 10 heavyweight.
JA when do you think that the UFC will start to incorporate women MMA fighters into their cards?
Not in my lifetime. Just don't think there is a huge market for it.
BJ by submission or knockout?
I'm not sure he'll finish Frank Edgar. If he does, I think it could be by submission. Will give some UFC 118 picks next week before we head to Boston.
And, in case you hadn't heard, MMA Live will be back on the road for UFC 118! We'll do pre and post-fight shows, as well as a Weigh-in Special.
The result of the Fillopovic v Mir fight is right there in Cro Cops name. MirKO...as in Mir by KO.
JA- Honestly you and the MMA Live crew adds to the whole UFC ppv experience with your pre and post work. Any idea when you will be at ALL events??
Thanks, Mike. I'm hopeful that the live remotes become the norm in 2011. Fingers crossed.
Jon...what's your take on Miguel Torres? You see his last two fights as a bit of a hiccup or do you see him having a tough time getting back to his old form soon? I know you are MMA Live pals and all...
Clearly, the bantamweight division has gotten a whole lot better. I think Miguel will still be a factor in the WEC, but his days of totally dominating at 135 appear to be over. And as his friend, I know he likes a challenge. So there is one...
FRANKIE BY UD! Ricardo Almeida BJJ represent.
Someone better pick up Almeida, Rob. Thought he was the biggest loser at UFC 117.
I thought the UFC HW division has never been deeper? You're saying there are only 3 contenders?
Well, we've seen some promising guys take a step backwards (Pat Barry & Todd Duffee), so that has impacted the depth I guess. But the top 4 is just gold right now. And I envision several fights involving Lesnar, Velasquez, Carwin and Dos Santos. The division is in good hands.
Why won't the state athletic commissions stop issuing a license to Jens Pulver?
I guess because he passes their tests. I think it is more incumbent upon the promoters to recognize Jens is done, and not solicit his services.
hey jon, do you think fedor will ever sign with the ufc and how do you think he would get on in the heavyweight division????
I am an optimist, so I do believe Fedor will eventually fight for the UFC. And I think he'll do quite well. Not sure he'll ever raise the belt, but I would favor him to beat at least everyone outside the aforementioned Top 4.
Jon, with Jake Shields joining the UFC and taking on a tough opponent in Martin Kampmann, do you think the UFC would jump to him for a title shot at the GSP/Kos winner over Fitch just for fresh blood, or set up a possible fight between Fitch and Shields?
So much will depend on the Koscheck-GSP result. If Koscheck wins, I think Dana will do everything in his power to make Fitch fight him for the middleweight title. If Shields makes quick work of Kampmann (not my expectation), I think the title shot could very well be his. First, we gotta seesee how that fight w/ The Hitman plays out at UFC 121.
Any news on when Hendo is going to fight again?
He will be here tomorrow, so hopefully I'll get something out of him. If so, will post on Twitter (@Jon_Anik) later in the day.
Do the UFC brass have any official power to tell dudes, like Thiago Silva and Rumble, what weight to fight at?
The UFC doesn't like to tell guys imperatively which weight to fight at. But if guys perpetually miss weight, I'd expect the UFC to intervene. With Rumble Johnson, I think that intervention is overdue.
Hi JA, What is your opinion on UK fighers? I particularly like Hathaway and Terry Etim from my home city. Not convinced about Hardy or Bisping in particular.
I'm pretty excited about a lot of British fighters right now. And I think Hardy may change your opinion with a big win over Carlos Condit at UFC 120. Also will be tracking Hathway and Ross Pearson. Hathaway is still young but has a ton of physical tools and a great frame for the WW division. He piques my interest quite a bit, and is also a great, humble guy.
Dang. I look dumb. Thiago Alves is what i meant.
I knew what you meant, man. Thiago Alves may get one more crack at making 170. If it doesn't happen for his next fight, I think you'll see him move to 185 with finality.
first time writing. love the chat. do you think silvas rib affected his fight?
Thanks for the submission, Barry. As I'm fond of saying, the Octagon isn't a place for excuses. Anderson's performance in the stand-up department was a bit baffling. I guess I would just rather give Sonnen credit.
What about Fedor as a UFC LHW? Oh, and the Hitman gonna beat Shields.
I think Kampmann has a GREAT chance to spring the upset. As for Fedor at 205, not gonna happen. If he hasn't done it by this point, I don't expect him to do it now, as he gets older.
Rumble vs Alves...loser leaves the division
Hey Chost, If GSP beats Kos, there would be plenty of time for a 16-man #1 contender tournament before GSP fights again in November 2011, right?
Hahahaha. I guess I've found someone who is as frustrated with GSP's inactivity as I am. Two fights a year just isn't enough!
Alves should move to MW, he could contend with his striking instead of looking like a corpse at 170. He walks around at 200lbs and would be a mid size MW.
I'd like to see it b/c I'm sick of Alves missing weight. But I think overall, he's just more competitive at 170. Anyone who can effectively cut down to the lowest weight possible has a greater chance of success.
Buy or Sell: Jon Jones will fight for the HW title within 4 years.
Tough question. Sell. Four years is a long time, but I think Jones will only go to heavyweight when he needs to.
Why does Shane Carwin deserve the benefit of the doubt? You need only look at his past physique to know he was using PEDs. Humans do not get that big and developed on milk alone. Just ask Lashley tomorrow...
I'm not saying he's innocent. And the information that is out there seems pretty accurate and thereby unfortunate for Shane and Team Carwin. But it doesn't make sense for me, in this seat, to blast him before I have all the information. Let's hear from Carwin. Perhaps he'll admit to some use?
Fedor's never had a reason to drop down. With his loss to Werdum and the behemoths in the UFC HW div, maybe now he does?
Still not buying it, Rich. I just don't think Fedor is gonna reinvent himself just because of one loss. I also don't think he has the motivation to continuously cut down to 205.
Hey Chost, who's number 1 on your speed dial. If it's the wife, who's number 2?
My twin brother, Jason.
Chost, I went to the Strikeforce card this past Friday..... lets jusy say Congrats Ryan Couture, but that event was terrible to sit through, was it just as bad on TV?
I was watching while voicing MLB highlights, so I'm the wrong guy to ask.
Jon, long time reader first time emailer. I appreciate your work. Do you see Chael Sonnen on the Ultimate Fighter with Anderson Silva if he wins his next fight? Thanks for the time man.
It's my pleasure, Brian, and thanks for chiming in. Sonnen is a no-brainer for the TUF reality show. I'd like to see him on there, regardless of who the opposing coach is.
Hey Chost. Enjoying the chat. How do you see the Faber fight tonight? I'd like to see him get back on the winning trail. WEC needs him to be the star he once was.
Faber has an injury, so his fight with Takeya Mizugaki has been pushed back.
Any news on a possible main event for the German card? Vitor?
I think Vitor will be involved in one of the top two fights on the card.
Hi Jon - I wonder if Brian Stann and Tim Kennedy have ever exchanged notes or war stories? That would be an interesting conversation. And looking past the Frankie Edgar/BJ Penn rematch, I would be very interested in a Jose Aldo foray into the UFC's LW division. Take care, SQ
Professor! Appreciate you checking out the chat. It seems like Stann and Kennedy go back-and-forth quite a bit on Twitter, so I'm sure those conversations have taken place. Will make sure to inquire tomorrow. As for Aldo, there are just so many intriguing possibilities for that guy. Eventually, you've gotta think we'll see him at 155. Just not sure about the timetable.
since fedor lost. how much of a chance do you think werdum would have against overeem?
I think Werdum's jiu-jitsu gives him some semblance of a chance. But I definitely don't think he would beat Alistair Overeem.
How about some props to Ryan Couture getting his first W as a pro for Strikeforce. He has some real slick BJJ.
That he does, BB.
Jon, been watching MMA Live, and read the chat for a long time now, first time making it to the chat while it's still going on...Any idea whats in line for Rich Franklin? I really wanted him to fight Rampage but now Rampage has an awful match up with Lyoto.
Tough to say. I still think there's a great possibility Franklin will fight Jon Jones. Wouldn't mind seeing him fight Forrest Griffin, either.
When do you see the Flyweight division starting in the WEC? Would that mean the WEC's 155ers will all go to the UFC with the new division coming?
The WEC's intentions to develop a flyweight division were announced about a year ago. But there hasn't been any movement b/c, right now, it's hard enough to give their 135ers and 145ers enough fights. If it does happen, that would seem like a good time to merge the elite WEC lightweights into the UFC.
Who will be doing the weigh ins with you since Kenny Randy and Miguel are tied up? And will you guys be at fan expo or anywhere to meet n greet
Not sure who are analysts will be at UFC 118. I would imagine Rashad Evans will be part of the coverage. And yes, MMA Live will have a booth at the fan expo and I look forward to meeting a lot of you guys. And girls.
Franklin says he's out til Jan/Feb
What do you think Couture and Toney are gonna weigh in at?
Despite some reports, I would be very surprised if James Toney came in over 250 lbs. So I'll say 242 for Toney. Randy will be around 220-225.
I know Napao is already slated to fight Schaub, but why not have him take Nog's place instead? Better matchup, I think.
Appreciate the thought. And it would definitely be a bigger fight in terms of the division/contention implications. But the Schaub-Gonzaga fight makes sense. And, in my humble opinion, so does Mir-Cro Cop.
Do you think Dana would be crazy enough to cut Fitch if he refuses to fight Koschek?
I wouldn't put anything past Dana. But no. He would just make Fitch move up to 185.
Werdum beat Overeem in Pride few years ago so he's got a great chance.
True. But I think that might actually work in Overeem's favor. Hugely motivated to avenge that loss. And I think Overeem is in better current form than Werdum, who will also be coming in off of an injury.
Assuming Toney loses which he will, what do you think his post fight interview will sound like?
If Toney loses, he will make excuses. I doubt very much he'll show MMA any respect. He may give Couture a compliment or two, but he won't acknowledge the difficulties in competing in MMA.
Lytle excites every time out, but Serra might be one of the few guys with the power to knock him out. Do you think he will be a bit more conservative in this fight and shoot for a takedown instead of relying on his hands? I'm hoping for another SICK Lytle finish!
Love this fight, Danny. Lytle has a ton of submission wins, but that can't be the gameplan against Matt Serra, right? I think you've got a great chance to see a big Lytle finish.
Is James Irvin cut from the UFC roster??
Jon, quick question how good is Daniel Cormier? Also, need your quick Strikeforce picks for gambling (cough) I mean non gamb... never mind what's the picks?
Cormier is the real deal. One of only a handful of true-to-the-definition world-class wrestlers in all of MMA. Still green right now, but definitely will be a force to be reckoned with. As for the Strikeforce picks, I like King Mo big. Jacare-Kennedy is a coin flip, but I lean towards the Brazilian I guess. And I think KJ Noons will get the TKO of Jorge Gurgel in what should be the fight of the night.
Last call. . . Kinda sad no one asked about the upcoming Strikeforce title fight. Your thoughts?
King Mo is a future superstar and I hope people will be watching Showtime on Saturday night. Jacare is one of the best grapplers we've ever seen in MMA, and Tim Kennedy is a very easy guy to root for. Should be a great show. Too bad I'll be at my best friend's wedding in Maine!
seems like Cormier fights every weekend. his wrestling is amazing but he takes too many shots on his way to a double leg. would get KOd by top HW.
Yup. Still a developmental guy at this stage of his career. But when you are developing and evolving, it's certainly a good thing to be winning and have people talking about you.
Jon, a few weeks ago i asked about your nickname for us as Dan has the freaks for boxing.... Any good ones yet?
Still open to suggestions. When I started this chat, Dan sent me an email to make sure I didn't call you guys Freaks. I've honored that request.
Florian getting married in maine?
Chatters = Chosties
If Bjorn changes the date of the Alvarez-Huerta fight I'll blame you personally JA! KC doesn't get many fights and this will definitely be the biggest!
I still think that fight could end up in Philadelphia. Hope for your sake that's not the case.
What is the current situation of MMA being legalized in New York State and how long do you think it will be until we have a fight in New York?
Isn't gonna happen in 2010. But I think you will see a show at Madison Square Garden before 2012.
better MMA future Cormier, Askren or Mo Lawal? all sick wrestlers.
All have bright futures. Askren is just relentless and I'm a huge fan of his. But I've gotta say King Mo, b/c we've already seen him succeed at the highest level.
Love the chat. I also love Brock's commitment to staying active and defending the title. Where does a win over Mir put Crocop in your rankings?
Agree wholeheartedly on Lesnar. Cro Cop would still be removed from the title picture. But he'd have to be back in the Top 10 heavyweight rankings, right?
Let's keep brainstorming and try to lock something down next week.
Great show last week! Having Sonnen in-studio was clutch.
Chael is terrific. Clearly, he was humbled by the highs and lows of UFC 117. I am confident we will have him back as an MMA Live analyst.
Hate to cut it short with all these questions coming in, but I must. Please send all overflow questions to me on Twitter (@Jon_Anik) and I vow to get back to you. And don't forget to join us for MMA Live tomorrow with Hendo, Miletich, Brian Stann, King Mo Lawal, Tim Kennedy and more! Until next week, enjoy the fights, eat something fried, and don't text and drive. -JA
