Chat with Bill WIlliamson

KyleC (Salem, OR)

Bill, Can you give me an update on Chaz Schillens? I recall reading that he was going to have surgery, but may be back for the season opener.

Bill Williamson
  (2:03 PM)

The team won't know anything until next week on whether he'll be ready for the opener.

Mike (Mission Viejo, Ca)

Hi Bill,Why are sports casters doubting the Chargers can make it to the superbowl this year. A lot are blaming Norv as the reason we will never make it. As far as i remember, Marty didnt do much better. We look like we've fixed our weak positions from last year, right?

Bill Williamson
  (2:04 PM)

I think the holdouts of McNeill and Jackson are contributing factors as well.

Emily (DC)

Bill - What is the minimum the Nation wants to see from DHB on Saturday to see the change they have been told about?

Bill Williamson
  (2:04 PM)

I think it's a season of work not just one preseason game that needed by DHB.

Mike (Madison, WI)

Hey, riddle me this: who's the Week 1 starting RB in Oakland and how many carries will he get?

Bill Williamson
  (2:05 PM)

I say Bush, 18-20 totes.

RYAN (DENVER)

Hey Bill. Just wondering if you think there is any way the Chargers would trade V Jack to the Raiders if the price is right?

Bill Williamson
  (2:05 PM)

Um, let me think about that ... No way.

justin (denver)

bil how bad of a record would it take for mcd. to get fired this year just curious

Bill Williamson
  (2:06 PM)

2-14 ... even then, he may be safe.

Ryan (Sacramento)

Do you believe the Raiders will have a strong offensive line in 2011 or 2012 with the current group they have?

Bill Williamson
  (2:07 PM)

If Veldheer and Campbell develop .. but it's the now that is a concern in Oakland.

Drew (San Diego)

Bill, if Marcus McNeil and Vincent Jackson are not signed before the start of the season, is there any benefit for them to join at week 10? Or will the new CBA make acruing an extra season meaningless?

Bill Williamson
  (2:07 PM)

The benefit is to get the accrued season.

Steve (Chicago)

Hey Bill - you're the man. What position should the chiefs stalk when the waiver wire hits?

Bill Williamson
  (2:09 PM)

Thanks very much Steve ... The Chiefs may look at WRS, OL, D and LB.

Bill Williamson
  (2:09 PM)

Thanks very much Steve ... The Chiefs may look at WRS, OL, D and LB.

SprungOnSports (Long Island)

How do you see Charles and Jones splitting the carries and who has had the better camp?

Bill Williamson
  (2:10 PM)

Charles has been great in camp ... I say he gets 60 percent of the carries.

Tom (Simi Valley, CA)

I find it interesting how the owners are promoting the 18 game sked as something better for the fans (let's just say, we know who it's REALLY better for). On ESPN.com's poll, there was a 50/50 split for and against. You would think that if something was for the fans' benefit, it would be lopsided in favor of it. Just a thought.

Bill Williamson
  (2:11 PM)

I'm with you. I don't like it, but it going to happen.

Bill Williamson
  (2:11 PM)

I'm with you. I don't like it, but it going to happen.

Andy (SD)

Is Gilberry really "taking" the position on the d-line in KC or is Jackon/Dorsey just "giving it up" with their play?

Bill Williamson
  (2:11 PM)

Maybe a little of both.

Richie Rich (L.A.)

Is Todd Haley the worst coach in the NFL? His hijinks regarding Jamaal Charles this offseason have been astounding. He has clearly outplayed T. Jones and is electrifying when on the field. What gives, Bill? Is Charles a locker room headache or something?

Bill Williamson
  (2:13 PM)

I think this is the msot overblown "controversy" of camp. It's no biggie. Charles is the guy. Now, if this continues in the regular season, we'll talk. But I don't see it happening.

KB (San Diego)

With Schilens hurt AGAIN, who could the Raiders be targeting as an additional receiverif anyone? You talked about TJ, any others? Crayton from Dallas possibly?

Bill Williamson
  (2:13 PM)

We'll see when the waiver wire gets rolling ... Keep an eye on TJ, though.

Jeremy (Roseville, Ca)

Hey Bill when Tebow eventually becomes the started do you see Denver moving Clady to RT or leaving him at LT since Ryan Harris is pretty good also

Bill Williamson
  (2:14 PM)

McDaniels has said he will not move Clady.

Bill Williamson
  (2:19 PM)

I hate it when my internet connection crashes during a chat ... sorry.

P. Rivers (San Diego, Ca)

Does Ryan Matthews have a monster year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:20 PM)

I'm not sure about a monster eyar, but he'll be productive on the ground and in the air.

Russ (Chicago)

After 2 preseason games, has your opinion changed on your power ratings for each team.

Bill Williamson
  (2:20 PM)

You said the magic word "Preseaosn." It doesn't mean mcuh at all. At all.

Dan (Wichita)

Do you see the Broncos trying to stretch the field more this year with a more confident quarterback?

Bill Williamson
  (2:21 PM)

I'm not sure if that's Orton's game.

Jeff (La Mesa)

Hey Bill,Would you play poker with AJ Smith?

Bill Williamson
  (2:21 PM)

Sure, I like poker.

Richard (Greensboro, NC)

Even with Jackson and McNeill out, I don't see the Chargers offense being in a bad position in the AFC West. With Dumervil out, there isn't another team with a pass rush to be concerned about, and none of the defenses are great. Do you see the offense as the weak link in SD or is it really the defense that holds the Chargers back because it lacks impact players at this point?

Bill Williamson
  (2:22 PM)

The Chargers don't face many stud pass rushers, especialy early in the season.

Zeb (Work)

Does Eddie Royal have a good year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:24 PM)

I think he has more than 37 catches. Dnever could really use 70-80 catches from this guy. He is a talent, so there is a chance.

Steve (Chicago)

Do yo think the Chiefs can ever be a real contender with its current front 7 on defense? I think the personnel is just not good enough for today's NFL (especially in the 3-4).

Bill Williamson
  (2:24 PM)

I tend to agree with you, but I think the Chiefs will be improved on offense.

Ben Johnson (Pinehurst, NC)

Actually playing poker against Smith would be fairly easy - you'd always know he wasn't bluffing.

Bill Williamson
  (2:25 PM)

Heck of a point, Ben.

Anon (top secret)

If I held a gun to your head, how about your early Divisional rankings?

Bill Williamson
  (2:26 PM)

Our preview package rolls out late next week.

Luke (Aurora, CO.)

Bill, I remember you mentioning that Ryan Clady could barely walk up some stairs a couple of weeks ago. Do you think he may be rushing his return? It would obviously be devastating if he further injured himself.

Bill Williamson
  (2:29 PM)

That's true and I'm a bit surprised he's back, but I don't think a player of that stature would be rushed. Or at least, I hope not.

Dustin (Hattiesburg)

What do you think Bill.. Will the Chiefs have a top 16 offense this season?

Bill Williamson
  (2:30 PM)

I think they can get in the top 12 or so. I love that run game.

Barlow (Reno, NV)

Is Knowshon Moreno going to be ready for week 1?

Bill Williamson
  (2:31 PM)

It's getting close. He better be back soon if he has any hope of playing in Jacksonville Sept. 12. He's missed all of camp.

Seth (Iowa)

KC has looked mediocore at best this camp, there are a lot of bright spots on both offense and defense. Give me a predicition of the Chiefs next 3 years...?

Bill Williamson
  (2:32 PM)

I think they get better each season. I really do like the direction of this team.

Austin (SD)

Bill - Any word on the Miami Dolphins plane in San Diego? I'm chomping at the bit!

Bill Williamson
  (2:33 PM)

I chekced into it. Didn't here anything.

Spiegel (Stevenson Ranch,CA)

How serious is the Samson Satele injury? Will the Raiders start looking on at free agency to try and replace him at center or are they gonna give Velheer a shot?

Bill Williamson
  (2:33 PM)

I think Vledheer will get a chance if he performs well in the preseason.

Andy (SD)

So if SD doesn't face any stud pass rushers, you weren't impressed by Kamerion Wimbley the other night with 4 sacks in the first half against the Bears? Did you even watch?

Bill Williamson
  (2:36 PM)

Stud, as in established sack masters. If Wimbley continues it, in the regualr season, then he'll be a stud. until then, it was a nice show in the preseaosn. Fair?

Jared (Kearneysville, Wv)

Hey Bill, If Demaryous Thomas is not ready for on opening day, who do you see our receivers being on gameday?

Bill Williamson
  (2:36 PM)

Gaffney, Royal, Decker, maybe Stokley.

Michael Wilson (Charleston, SC)

Who do you think is better....Michael Bush (lol) or Jamaal Charles?GO CHIEFS!

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

Charles is a star in the making.

Steve (Seattle)

I keep hearing from other sports writers and bloggers that there is no way Jackson and McNeil join the Chargers at week 10 because the new CBA will make accruing an extra season pointless for them. Are you hearing the same thing?

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

That is their current plan, but things can change when it gets down to the nitty gritty.

Spiegel (Stevenson Ranch,CA)

Who do you think will have the better rookie season for the Raiders, Mclain or Houston?

Bill Williamson
  (2:38 PM)

Tough one ... I think they are both going to have imapcts. But Houston may be further along. He's been terrific.

Tim (Montana)

Bill, what are your thoughts on the monday night opener between the Chiefs and the Chargers?

Bill Williamson
  (2:39 PM)

I think I'm going to be up very, very late that night. It's gong to be a blast.

phil (san deigo)

What do you think will be the out come with VJ?

Bill Williamson
  (2:39 PM)

Right now, I say he gets traded at some point.

Jeff (TX)

Your "don't worry about it" attitude towrd the JC "controversy" is incredibly annoying. None of us are worried about it. JC's elite talent will force Haley to play him; it's just the point of putting the team MVP second string behind a newcomer who doesn't have half his talent , the point of putting the only player in history to break 1000 yards with fewer than 200 carries on the bench.

Bill Williamson
  (2:41 PM)

Sounds like you're a little worried it ... It's the preseason.

Rudy (Kansas)

Which injury would be a bigger blow, Denver losing Orton or San Diego losing Rivers?

Bill Williamson
  (2:42 PM)

I'd say Rivers because he's one of the best players in the league.

Thomas (AR)

So is DMC strictly a change-of-pace, mismatch back now, similar to R.Bush?

Bill Williamson
  (2:42 PM)

We'll see. First, he has to stay healthy before we figure out what he is.

Will (Denver)

Bill - Why are you down on Kyle Orton? Have you watched him in preseason? I'm expecting a big year from him.

Bill Williamson
  (2:43 PM)

Am I down on Orton?

Clinton (San Diego)

Malcolm Floyd will obviously be the #1 receiver. what is your feeling on the rest of San Diego's receiving core?

Bill Williamson
  (2:44 PM)

Naanee and Davis will get a lot of chances as well.

Joe (Cancun)

Could we see a top 5 defense out of the Raiders if the O can keep them off the field a little?

Bill Williamson
  (2:45 PM)

Top five would be a major jump. Let's see a month or so into the regular season before making that call after two preseason games.

Brad (KC)

The Chiefs must be the worst judge of D talent in the NFL. They take two scrubs in the top five and then pass on Mt. Cody twice in the 2nd round and Cam Thomas six times.

Bill Williamson
  (2:45 PM)

Yeah, that wasn't good.

Kevin (Dnever)

Hey Bill, Can you explain how the owners will make more money from 18 game season? I thought that the players made very little for preseason games, but the ticket prices are the same as regular season. Aren't preseason games just cash grabs for owners?

Bill Williamson
  (2:46 PM)

TV, baby.

chris (denver)

hey bill, if parrish cox plays well do you think he replaces alphonso smith and the bronco's try to brush the smith mistake under the rug?

Bill Williamson
  (2:47 PM)

I think he has already replaced Smith. Don't worry, media and fans won't let Denver brush that pick under the rug. Brutal.

Seth (Iowa)

With your indication of better each season, by year 3 do they have two top five defensive linemen (Dorsey&Jackson) or are they going to have to start from scratch to get the front seven right?

Bill Williamson
  (2:49 PM)

Dorsey and Jackson are on short leashes. If they don't show soemthing soon, Kansas City will have to think of other options on the DL.

hum_bolt (San Diego)

It's pretty obvious you don't like the Raiders or their fans, when are we going to ge a real (unbiased) blogger to cover the AFC West?

Bill Williamson
  (2:50 PM)

OK, why do I hate the Raiders now. You know I'd take it personally, but it seems like every writer gets accused of this so ...

Bradley H. (Los Angeles, CA)

Finish the sentence: The broncos will be competitive if...

Bill Williamson
  (2:51 PM)

They don't suffer any more injuries and the defensive and offenive lines make big strides.

Steve (San Diego)

You have one of the best jobs a football fan could ever dream of.It's only possible to see one game per Sunday in person. Who decides what game you attend each week?

Bill Williamson
  (2:52 PM)

Me and the bosses chat it out about two weeks in advance. Trying to figure out what is the best matchup or best sory.

Al (Wausau, WI)

Bill, do you think there's any chance the Chargers could trade Vincent Jackson to the Vikings? If so, what could be the cost for the Vikings of such a trade?

Bill Williamson
  (2:53 PM)

I think, at least, a second-rounder. I'm just not sure the Vikings want to spend the big dollars.

Marc ((Baltimore))

Hi Bill - How do you think Ayers and Moss will respond this year, given the pressure with Doom out?

Bill Williamson
  (2:53 PM)

I think Ayers may be counted on more than Moss, who has shown nothing in three seasons.

Todd (Decatour)

Will Mccluster be productive for the Chiefs this year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:54 PM)

Very much so as a rusher, receiver and a returner.

Cap (San Diego)

What is the health of Tebow at this point? Is he going to play this weekend, or is he going to be enjoying a nice shrimp cocktail while watching this upcoming preseason game?

Bill Williamson
  (2:55 PM)

Right now, I say he plays Sunday. But that can change.

Jason (Bmore)

Is this the year Dwayne Bowe finally emerges as a go to wr in the league?

Bill Williamson
  (2:56 PM)

Remember, Bowe was good in his first and second seasons. The guy has some skills.

Spiegel (Stevenson Ranch,CA)

Whats your prediction for the type of production Raider Nation can expect from Louis Murphy?

Bill Williamson
  (2:57 PM)

I think Murphy can get 50-60 catches. He's a nice player.

Richard (Workville, Usa)

How E. Berry looked in camp? Is he worth the pick?

Bill Williamson
  (2:58 PM)

He's been tremednous. What a great pick.

Barry Dodson (Riverside, Ca)

The Raiders defense has been spectacular so far, I know it is only preseason, but they did it against the #1's for dallas and chicago. That holds some weight.

Bill Williamson
  (2:58 PM)

Are you worried about that run defense that aloowed an 89-yard TD run?

Marcus (Lincoln, NE)

Best Gameday Atmosphere? i.e. Tailgating, Fan-Fare and overall Ambiance!

Bill Williamson
  (2:59 PM)

Oakland and KC.

Bill Williamson
  (3:01 PM)

Great hour, folks. Talk to you next week.
