Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

Greetings folks. How are we doing?

jason (atlanta)

people are saying wayne has lost a step and garcon will emerge as the #1 rec this year what do you think? how much does garcon missing preseason effect the rec compitition he's not a vet that can be trusted without practice.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

No way is Pierre Garcon a better or more productive receiver than Reggie Wayne this year.

Michael (Indiana)

What would you say is the number one task for the Colts' offensive line? Improve protection, enhance the run game, etc.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:06 PM)

Improve the run game, for sure.

Rob (Kentucky )

Maybe I am just an ignorant fan. Maybe I am taking too much out of the reports I have read and the preseason games I have watched, but I really think the Titans will be a much improved team. Their return game will be better with either one of the rookies vying for the job. The passing defense cant be any worse, should be better now that they are healthy and more experienced there. The passing offense will be improved. I think we could be looking at a 10-6 or 11-5 record. Do you concur?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:07 PM)

Better, perhaps. Not 11-5 better. Nine wins, maybe 10 is my brightest outlook for them. But I'm always wrong.

KB (Oak ridge)

Any idea who the "QB" was, who voluntereed to be at the receiving end of the Freeney's spin move? He needs some serious props, and/or a mental checkup.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:08 PM)

Sport Science intern, I am guessing.

DJ (San Antonio)

I know it's just the preseason, but MJD has not looked good. Should we be concerned with the Jaguars running game this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:08 PM)

I think they've focused on other things, believing they will be able to run.

Abe Lincoln (via mobile from heaven)

Well, so Pete Kuharsky doesn't like the new penny? I do not think much of a man who is not wiser today than he was yesterday.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:09 PM)

At least they didn't mess with the front. But the thing has no weight to it, and I'm a big fan of the Lincoln Memorial, Abe, which is gone.

Val (Olympia)

Will Blount make the titan 53 and see some time in 2010?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:09 PM)

Looking doubtful. Lack of special teams contribution out of a third back is a bad thing. But he's still got a chance.

ian (jacksonville)

whats the worst you see the jaguars doing and the best you see them doing and how good do you think david gared is going to do

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

No offense, but that question allows for such a broad range that the answers turn out meaningless. They could win four games. They could win 10. I don't think they'll do either.

Justin (Sebastian)

Paul, how close do you think CJ gets to his prediction of 2500 yards?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:11 PM)

Maybe within 800 yards.

sean (Houston)

Paul, the titans appear to have formidable offensive and defensive lines. Pair those with their recent rise in skill position talent on both sides of the ball and this team looks like it could surprise the league again. Thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:12 PM)

I'm starting to like them more. But I think the NFC East is going to be very good against the AFC South, I lack faith in VY and I am not ready to make as big a jump as many glass-half-full fans.

Al Davis (Oakland)

Which Zach Miller is better?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:12 PM)

The one in Oakland if he's getting on the field regularly.

Simon Kuharsky (Talking to Ari)

Hey dad, Ari keeps telling me that you're getting screwed by your agent and we need to jump on board with him. He promised me a cushy parking space and office with a window.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:13 PM)

Tell Ari he should be talking to me, not you. And what exactly are you parking? A stroller?

James (Indy)

PK, how's it goin' brother? Got a nice setup to watch Indy take on the Pack tonight? Third pre-season game is about the only measure you get for the Colts in terms of anything remotely approaching their readiness for the regular season.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:13 PM)

I have a great setup. Only think it can't assure is that I stay awake after the half.

Nate (Connecticut)

What are Marc Mariani's chances to make the 53 man roster?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:14 PM)

I think he's made it.

Kraig (Silver spring)

An 18 game schedule would not help a Team like the Colts that give the undrafted free agents a good chance of making the squad. What do you think of the proposal?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:14 PM)

If the only other choice is four preseason games, I want 18 regular season games. The best talent evaluators will still be the best talent evaluators.

Finley Kuharsky (via mobile)

When I'm in the Oval Office (no later than 2016), I'm going to put your face on the new penny. Will that make you happy?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

Yes. Also put it back to its previous weight. Abe can keep the front. I will take the back.

DJ (San Antonio)

MJD has had a HORRIBLE preseason, can I expect more of the same?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

If MJD lasts past four in your draft, that's crazy.

Charles (Goodlettsville)

Who do you believe will be the odd man out of the DE rotation; Ball or Brock? Surely, they won't keep 6 DE's, right?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:16 PM)

Brock out, I think. Could keep six if Hayes won't be ready for opening day.

JP (Knoxville)

Paul, can you read Fisher at all? If so, is this a team he feels confident in?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:18 PM)

Yes I can read him. Not on that. He's always confident in his teams.

Adam S (San Francisco)

Paul, what do you see as the most significant challenge that may prevent the Colts from returning to the Super Bowl? (Aside from their ridiculously tough schedule.)

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:18 PM)

How New England, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, San Diego and whoever the surprise AFC team perform. To me the biggest issue for the Colts outside of potential injuries will be how much others have closed the gap.

Mike (Ohio)

Apparently there is a chance Sorgi could get cut. I'm aware that he is banged up right now, but do you think if he is cut loose the Colts may consider bringing him back?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:19 PM)

If he's cut, I think it means his shoulder is bad. If his shoulder is bad, I don't think people are jumping for him.

SprungOnSports (Long Island)

How much do the Texans trust Arian Foster and will he be able to shoulder the load all year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

More than they should, I think. Kubiak admits the sample size is small. But they are encouraged and plan to see it through.

Zach (Muncie, IN)

How will the Colts use Bullitt?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

Special packages and special teams.

Kalvis (Indy)

Thx for the Dwight Freeney video. Got the whole household excited about the upcoming season :D

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:21 PM)

You're welcome. That is cool stuff. I love those pieces. I need to search out the Larry Fitzgerald one.

Tucker (Columbus, IN)

Does Samkon Gado's 2 TD's against Arizona give him a chance to make the cut? He looked like a bulldozer; on the other hand, he was running over third-stringers.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:21 PM)

The TDs don't matter. What maters is that he can play special teams. I am not sure the third RB is currently on the roster, however.

Over (Reaction)

So if Houston has another so-so effort this weekend will everyone jump off the bandwagon 3rd week of preseason? Seems like the popular thing to do nowadays...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

I'm not one to overrate the preseason. But they have been lifeless and I was not impressed by the practices I was at. It's not unreasonable to downgrade them in predictions or anticipation a bit off that.

Jags Fan (Jacksonville)

I have the # 1 pick: Do I go with the heart and pick MJD, root for the arch rival and go with CJ, or is it safer to hit up AP?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:25 PM)

You cannot take MJD. That would be silly. I don't see why you wouldn't take CJ. But don't expect 2,000. Expect 1,600 rushing with 16 TDs. That's pretty good, isn't it?

jt (new orleans)

Can Gado pass Ringer and be #2 back?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

No. Why are people going crazy for Gado?

MJD (Everbank)

What do I have to do for people to stop doubting me? Its getting kinda old really.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:27 PM)

Who's doubting you? They aren't allowed to ask questions when you've hardly touched the ball in two games and are unlikely to play in a third? Asking a question isn't the same thing as writing a guy off.

Wes (Torrance)

Will Chuck Cecil's D be the soft, zone defense of last year, or the blitz-happy D against the Cardinals? or in between?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:27 PM)

A couple series of blitzing in a preseason game does not indicate a change of scheme. Perspective people. Perspective

Lawrence (Nashville)

Will Verner beat out Mcourty by the start of the season or later on? He seems too talented to sit for too long

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:28 PM)

It would be un-Fisherlike to play the rookie. I'm going to try to poke around on that today, so look for a post this eve.

DJ (Nashville)

At what position are the Titans the weakest at this point in the preseason? I see lack of experience in the secondary as a concern, but I still think linebacker is our weakest link.... any thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:28 PM)

I have concerns at linebacker and in the secondary.

Kalvis (Indy)

With the talk of an 18 game regular season, is there also talk about expanding the rosters to help alleviate some injury concerns?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:30 PM)

Rosters would definitely grow, as would practice squads.

Adam S (San Francisco)

Although they won all those games last year, the Colts came from behind in the 4Q in at least 7-8 of them. Is it fair to blame this on Jim Caldwell, and is there any chance Indy goes after Bill Cowher?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:30 PM)

We're going to place blame for them having trailed but coming back to win? Are you serious? There is zero chance that the Colts are changing coaches or chasing a coach.

Adam (Cookeville)

I was standing next to Phil Simms along the fence at Titans practice next week. He was telling the next guy down the fence that Chris wasn't getting a fair shake from the Titans, coaches misrepresented his chances to make the team, and they were all over Chris for mistakes that VY gets a pass on. He sounded like the father of a 10-year-old whose coach wasn't using him right. I understand the father thing, but as an ex-quarterback, shouldn't he have a better understanding of what's going on?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

Fatherhood trumps reason in such circumstances, I'm guessing. I love Phil.

AR (New York)

When I was young, I remember watching Steve McNair and thinking he is one of the best 2 min qbs. Was I being biased? Exactly how good was Mac at the 2 min offense?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

Very good. But not Montana or Elway good.

Kevin (Ponte vedra beach)

What will be a better unit for the jags this season. The D-line or WR's?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:32 PM)

I think the D-line will be greatly improved. I think the WRs will still have to rely on Garrard.

SoCalTitan (Southern California)

Do you believe Rusty Smith makes the roster over Chris Simms?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

Unquestionably.

Dan (Yakima, WA)

PK, what's the word with Derrick Morgan's injury. Does he even see the field anytime soon?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

He could play Saturday.

Keegan (Montana)

How many receivers do you think the Titans keep and is Marc Mariani likely to be one of them?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

Six, with Mariani as the sixth.

John (Arlington)

Think Jacksonville will have any blackouts this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

Second half of home schedule is not pretty, particularly Cleveland and Oakland.

Jason (Chicago)

Paul you are incorrect about perspective last year the soft zones were designed to masc weaknesses like Bullocks fading legs Nick Haroer who isnt a has been but a never were. Maybe the new blitzes were a younger fresher team thinking outside the box?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:37 PM)

You think they have the coverage people to blitz? They haven't been a blitzing team in a long time. With a first-year starter at corner, an unreliable Griffin at free and a conservative coordinator groomed in the probabilities of Schwartz I don't know why we'd expect it. And if they were going to blitz a lot in the regular season, they they wouldn't blitz a lot in the preseason.

James (Indy)

Preseason is what it is, but thus far Indy hasn't had much continuity on the O-line and the running game is thus about the same. What do you really forecast for Indy's O this season? If they can even be decent in the running game that resurrects the play-action game which is not hitting the long gains.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

People bite on play-action even when the Colts (or Texans) aren't running it well. I think once the O-line is healthy, Eldridge will help and they will run a little better and be a little more balanced than last year.

mike (boca raton,Fl)

is garrard in the same catorgery as eli manning vince young jay cutler

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:39 PM)

How are you putting Eli Manning in the same category as Young/ Cutler/ Garrard? Eli's won a Super Bowl. Eli is in the top tier of that group. Young and Cutler next, Garrard in third tier.

Justin (Credible)

What are your thoughts on the Texans kicker situation?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:39 PM)

I'd make a change if they are close, which they are now. Better psychologically.

jack del rio (jacksonville )

who will have the most sacks on the team and how many

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

Kampman and I don't know.

The Ellipses... (...)

PK...you used to use me often...what happened...I thought we were tight, but now you never return my phone calls...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

I caved to critics. I still love you and use you in emails, texts, even some tweets...

Derek (Kansas City)

Were the Colts as much good last season as they were lucky? There were a few games such as the Patriots and Texans that they really should not have won.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

We haven't met, clearly. I don't deal in what should have happened. I deal in what did happen. They won those games.

Darrell (Houston)

Paul, with all the injuries lately to the Texans at DE, do you think they regreat not signing Schoebel?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

He retired.

Adam S (San Francisco)

With Powers hurt, Indy's CBs were picked on pretty effectively in the Super Bowl. Are you a believer in Jacob Lacey, and is anyone else (besides Hayden) a legitimate starter?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

I like those top three. Not a lot of teams have a fourth corner who's starter caliber. Deshea Townsend might be OK depth.

Adam (Cookeville)

Given your NJ roots, I should have guessed you were a Phil Simms fan. Two observations from the encounter: He's much taller and has a much fatter head than I expected and he scores quite high on the "F-Bombs" per minute scale.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

I do the Phil fist pump on one knee once in a while after a good blog entry. (Rare.)

Dominque Edison (Nashville)

My name keeps popping up in highlights of training camp notes. Will I make the team ?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

If they are looking for a seventh receiver to keep inactive every week, you are their man.

Garrard (Jacksonville)

How in the hell can you say Vince is in a tier above me?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

He wins more.

Jason (Knoxville, TN)

If the Colts make it to the Super Bowl and they play the Cowboys would that be a huge disadvantage since the Cowboys will be playing at home?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

It would be nice for the Cowboys. But it's not like the tickets all go to fans of the home team.

Vince (Baptist Sports Park)

How the heck do you put me in the category with Cutler? 26-13 versus 24-29 and he played in the AFC West. In two of the three years i was a starter we had the 28 & 31st ranked defenseHe may have a big arm but I am a way better QB and Player

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:47 PM)

Because i couldn't put four quarterbacks in four different tiers and I think you still have a lot of potential. With Mike Heimerdinger as your head coach in 2011, you'll be good again.

Adam (Cookeville)

Titans 6 Receivers: Gage, Britt, Washington, Hawkins, Damian Williams, Marianni?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:47 PM)

Yes, except they will spell it Mariani.

matt (jacksonville )

what do you think about the conerbacks and is rasheed mathis is he still good

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

He's OK. I am not sure a lot of personnel people ever rated him as elite if Nnamdi, Champ and Darelle are the standards.

Brian (Jax)

I read an article by Prisco of CBS, and he referrred to Terrance "Pot Roast" Knighton as on the verge of being a Pro Bowl player. Is this accurate?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:49 PM)

Yes, he's very good.

jacob (jacksonville )

do you think we saw the best of david garrard

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

I do.

matt (jacksonville )

do you see mjd doing worse or best than last season

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

About the same.

Leremy (Charlotte)

I know that this is a long time from now but could the Colts have a great chance to play at their home field in the Super Bowl for the 2011 season? If that did happen would it even be possible that they would lose? The Colts advantage would be much, much, much bigger than the Cowboys advantage would be.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:51 PM)

Any home team in a Super Bowl would have about the same advantage. Or at least we could say any indoor team at home would have about the same advantage.

Will (Houston)

My wife, from Dallas, may give birth at Reliant at the Cowboys vs. Texans game? If we make a big ruckus about it, would McNair give us season tickets? Secondly, should my wife have the right to give our child the name "Troy" if he is born there?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:52 PM)

I hear they've built some hospitals in the Dallas area.

Jeff (Colorado)

Eugene Monroe was embarrassed by Freeney last year, but he looks a WHOLE lot better this year (lighter, faster, and even stronger). Are you looking forward to watching that matchup this year? How do you think Monroe will do this time around?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

Monroe vs. Freeney in the opener was as you'd expect -- major advantage to DF. Monroe will be better this year, but still if he loses just one play at the wrong time, that can kill the Jags. Should be fun to watch.

Ty (Jacksonville)

who is the best weapon on offense or defense the jaguars have, other then MJD?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

I'd feel OK saying Knighton is their second most dangerous, effective player. If Kampman rebounds, it could be him.

Marc Mariani (My laptop)

Do I win the KR/PR job?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

Probably not. Damian Williams would have to struggle.

Jarett Dillard (Jax)

How close will I get to 67 catches?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:55 PM)

Within 34 or so. No, I don't know. He could emerge and be productive.

James (Indy)

PK, I know you're big on hypotheticals, what SHOULD have happened, and predictions. Lay it all out for us right now...complete rundown on all four teams' 2010 seasons, and what SHOULD have happened instead.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

A good and fun question. But too long a project for chat pace, sorry!

Buff (at work)

I know this is not an AFC South team, but just for fun: Which will happen first in Cincinnati: Adam Jones starts a fight in a club somewhere, or TO throws his QB under the bus?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

I don't know, but I think the Bengals are highly overrated. Bengals, Bears, Broncos and Jets will not be as good as they are being billed to be.

Abe Lincoln (via mobile from heaven)

PK, one of my favorite sayings: "The time comes upon every public man when it is best for him to keep his lips closed." Perhaps your friend Mr. Simms could learn a lesson here.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:00 PM)

It's not like Phil is in the middle of a scandal. He defended his son and has an unrealistic view of him. If that's a crime, a lot of dads should be over at the courthouse.

Adam (Cookeville)

I think Kenny Britt is a prime example of why a team needs strong leaders. Someone on the team needs to ride him hard until his mental skills = physical potential. His team mates need jerk a knot in his tail for kicking the ball out of bounds Monday night, not giggle with him on the sideline.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:00 PM)

A well-made point. And leadership is an issue for this team this year.

Zach (Muncie)

Does Brown replace Addai by the end of the year as the Colts starter?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:00 PM)

I don't expect it. Addai takes too much grief.

Todd (Decatour)

Kevin walters...thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:01 PM)

I think Kevin Walter will hold on to the No. 2 job and Jacoby Jones will play mostly as the third.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:01 PM)

Well folks. I enjoyed it. See you next week.
