Hi everyone. Let's get right to it... We have tons to chat about today, and remember we're sticking with our 30-minute preseason window. And we're off...
Randy Phillips looks to be a keeper for the Lions. It doesn't look like he was at the combine in April. Any idea how he stayed under the radar? Also, any further word on Ryan Stamper joining their depeleting LB corp?
I believe there is an assistant on the Lions' staff who coached Phillips in college. As for Stamper, no word...
Is brett frave interested in coaching after he retires?
I thought he was already doing that. (Coaching, not retiring.)
so whats this about rice having hip surgery? If he needed surgery why didnt he take care of this right after the season ended?
That's the $100 billion question. It sounds like he got different advice depending on what doctor he saw in the offseason and decided to try to push through it. Obviously, it didn't work.
What is the status of the progression of pat lee, brandon underwood, and justin harrel. are any of these guys where the packers realistically hoped they be at this point this year, and do you see any of them making a good contribution in the near future or are we looking at a handful of jarret bush and ahmad carrolls.
When I was at Packers camp, they were talking about Underwood as if he was the star of the summer. It sure sounds like he's going to be the nickel guy. Pat Lee could end up playing in the dime. As for Harrell, they're not counting on him. Anything they get is a bonus.
How would a Vincent Jackson fit in with the Vikes? Looks interesting to me. Could they ever swing it?
Here's the problem: He's suspended for the first three games by the NFL. So he couldn't provide immediate assistance.
plus or minus 10 tds for Jermichael Finely, I say plus this guy is gonna be a monster this year
I'd go over, based on what I'm seeing.
Kevin, as a big fan, the Vikings really scare me. The O-line does not look good (Sullivan out, no real replacement) to take on 3-4 D's, our receiver situation is bleak, and who knows whos going to start at MLB or Free Safety? I think this team is looking at 8-8 and no playoffs. What's your take?
I think Favre gets them to the playoffs, but I've maintained for a while that they're not the best team in this division.
Shields getting a lot of love in the GB special teams/secondary. Do you think he will contribute anything this year? Because Jarret Bush at least has played in a pro football game, but it looks like he is on his way out.
You're right. Jarrett Bush does appear to be on his way out. Shields is such an enigma. Can't catch to save his life on kick/punt returns, but actually seems to have instincts in coverage. I can't imagine they would want to put him out there on defense in a regular season game, but he's sure shown some potential there.
Does the Rice incident reflect back on Childress in any way? I mean how is he just now getting surgery? Could Chilly have done something about this? It just seems like the Vikes are headed to crazy town and he's behind the wheel.
You can't force a guy to have surgery. A lot of crazy stuff is happening all at once. Some can be blamed on Childress. Some can't. I don't see where the Rice thing is his fault. He doesn't make medical decisions and isn't the one to decide whether guys get contract extensions.
Will the Vikings consider moving Joe Webb to WR, at least for the short term? With Favre and TJack, Webb won't be playing QB anytime soon.
I think they missed the boat on that. He was a project as a receiver but has taken almost no reps there. Even if they moved him today, he wouldn't be ready to help during Rice's absence.
Kevin, What happened to Chris Williams last week? I thought he played Jared Allen pretty good the end of last season. I thought he was going to be a bright spot for the Bears offensive line for years to come. Is it learning new blocking scheme in Martz system? Or what he's learning from Tice is totally different from last year? What do you think?
I thought the same, Sam. Part of it is the fact that Martz leaves his tackles on islands. They don't get a lot of help from tight ends/running backs. So there could be an adjustment there. Another theory from Dan Pompei of the Chicago Tribune: Going up against Julius Peppers every day has made Williams a basket case. Not sure if that's the case yet, but something to keep in mind.
Can Jevon Walker really resurrect his career in Minnesota with Favre?
I'd be stunned if that were the case. It's been three years since Walker had a productive season.
I understand how Phillips got to Detroit, I don't understand why he wasn't at the combine and apparently unnoticed by anyone else. Any ideas?
Oh, sorry. I know there is a story there but I don't have it on quick recall. Apologies. But I will put it on my list this week and do a blog post on it. Thanks.
Does this make Bernard the most valuable fantasy receiver on the team? Are defenses going to worry about taking down AP instead of breaking Favre now?
In a relative sense, yeah. Obviously Rice isn't going to be there, and Harvin is a risk because of his migraines. But don't forget that Shiancoe had more touchdowns than any of them last year.
Is the Bulaga hip flexor a fatigue issue from all the extra work at guard? Are they wearing this guy out who should be concentrating on tackle?
Don't think it's related to that, although I'm still not a fan of moving rookie offensive linemen between positions. Looks like I've lost that fight, however.
There has been no real mention of Moats in the Vikes backfield since his signing...is he just invisible there? Or was there a different plan for him from the beginning?
He was released today to make room for Javon Walker. Was buried on the depth chart.
Kevin, with Nick Roach having arthroscopic knee surgery, does that give Pisa that starting nod for Week 1? I think a Urlacher, Briggs, Tinoisamoa LB core is about as good as it gets in the NFL.
I would have to think he'll get every opportunity. Even if Roach is recovered, you would think he'll be behind from a conditioning perspective. Odd timing for a clean-up procedure.
Javhid Best looks like a beast so far. Will games between the Detroit Lions and their opponents have final scores similar to Arena Football games?
Definitely has that potential, yes. But the Lions are going to have to make sure they're better in the red zone than they were the other night in Denver. But I stand by my assertion that the Lions will score some points this year.
How does Forte look and what kind of rbbc do you see happening there?
Forte looks like he's got his burst back. So far, he's been the clear No. 1 but has shared more time with Chester Taylor than he has with other teammates in the past. Looks like he'll get 60 percent of the carries or more.
will drew stanon beat shawn hill for 2nd for lions
No. No chance. Shaun Hill is an accomplished No. 2, and his relationship with Scott Linehan goes back to Minnesota in 2002. He'll be the backup.
Outside of V-Jack with his suspension, what are their options for trading for a WR at this point? Any sleepers they might try to pluck form some team?
Only name I can think of is Kevin Curtis. Picking are slim.
Kevin, a lot of Vikes fans have been dreaming of the Vikes getting Randy Moss in a trade with the Pats... please explain how this is HIGHLY unlikely.
I wish I could, but I'm not sure. I wouldn't put anything past Zygi Wilf. He could be excited by that. And we all know Favre would love to play with him. I would still say unlikely, but I can't give you a definite no.
Lions or Bears, who do you think has the better record this year?
It will be something we're watching all year. Still think Bears could be a 7-8 win team, while the Lions are a 5-7 win team. Take that for what it's worth....
Brett Favre. Brett Favre. Brett Favre. Brett Favre. Brett Favre. Brett Favre. Brett Favre. Brett Favre. Brett Favre. Brett Favre. Brett Favre. Brett Favre. Brett Favre. Brett Favre. Brett Favre. Brett Favre. Brett Favre. Brett Favre. Brett Favre. Brett Favre. Brett Favre. Brett Favre. Brett Favre. Brett Favre. Brett Favre. Brett Favre. Brett Favre. Brett Favre. Brett Favre. Brett Favre. Brett Favre. I felt my name needed to be mentioned more. I love seeing, reading, hearing my name.
Yes, it's been a while.
What about me??
You signed in Seattle.
Rank the NFCN defenses. (Please keep in mind the Packer's last non-Preseason outing.)
Well, over 16 games I still like the Packers' defense. I'll go: Green Bay, Minnesota, Chicago, Detroit.
Do you think the packers secondary will be able to limit big plays against the eagles WRs in week 1?
I'll be interested to see if they really get after Kevin Kolb and try to rattle him. That's the best way to limit big plays.
Any chance the Bears would try and make a play for Logan Mankins?
Doubtful. They don't look like they have much of a player budget right now. It two weeks for them to come up with $100,000 for Todd Collins.
Urlacher, Briggs, & Pisa as good as it gets at linebacker??? Tell Eric in Chicago that my grandmother could shred that linebacking corp. I would say that trio is in the bottom 10.
Now, now. That's not nice. But I'll tell him.
Who do we need to ask to get ESPN to put up an ESPNMinnesota site?
In regard to Webb playing WR, I'm pretty sure that quarterbacks know the route-tree inside out. I don't see that as a problem...Have you see Webb's youtube video? Dude can jump..
There is one. It's called 1500ESPN.com .... and has its own Vikings beat writer, too. (Tom Pelissero)
Got some things out of order here.
On the Joe Webb thing ... obviously there is a lot more to being a receiver than knowing the routes. He has to know how to run the routes, come in and out of breaks, ward off defenders, etc.
Do you think I'm going to win the punting job or is it back to Australia for me?
When I was in Green Bay a few weeks ago, it sounded like Masthay had the upper hand. But stranger things have happened.
Wow Kevin, you continue to have manlove with the Packers considering the way they finished last year. I don't believe they made any significant moves to move them past the Vikes! Vikes came within several stupid turnovers to going to the Super Bowl last year and you continue to pimp the Packers?? Vikes will still win the NFC North!
That's what is great about America. Everyone can have their opinion.
I bet Mike Tice is wishing he stayed in Florida.
Interesting. If he can somehow pull this off, however, he'll be the assistant of the year in the NFL.
no love for the ladies?
I try to treat everyone with the same snark...
Tramon Williams and next years first round pick for Revis? Imagine Revis and Woodson together!!!!!
Yes, because the Packers have a long history of acquiring veteran players who are in line for long-term contracts.
btw - I think your manlove for the Pack is based on the fact that Rogers is evolving into an absolute BEAST of a quarterback.
Something to be said for that, yes...
Why didn't the Pack go after Westbrook? Perfect 3rd down back... Brandon Jackson is then insurance if either get hurt, and can return kicks. Also, will the special teams be better last year? Can't be worse right?
I'm not sure in the Packers' case, but I know there were some teams who didn't trust that he can stay healthy anymore.
Ok, a few more here.
Rank the NFC North coaches from best to worst.
I tend to look at coaches simply: By their winning percentage. On that scale, my ranking goes: McCarthy, Childress, Smith, Schwartz.
If you were Ted, what do you do first? Add RB, OLB or DB.
If they could find a cornerback available, which almost never happens, I would jump at that.
will james jones surpass his 2009 stats in 2010?
No. I think those passes go to Jordy Nelson.
Ok everyone, thanks so much! Chat with you next week.
