Welcome to a special Monday edition of chat as I sub for Ryan McGee, who is off making the world a better place. Fire away.
David, I alerted you about rogue tweets and you blocked me. I'm sure it was a mistake - you know me! And you DM'd and asked when they stopped (about 5pm Satturday before I was blocked. Please unblock me. Thanks! Paulette
Yeah, I was spammed. Had to block a lot of people. Sorry you were caught up in that. Will unblock after the chat.
What a great race yesterday! Will we ever see a cup race in Montreal?
It was a great race. Too bad Robby Gordon got caught up in fuel mileage situation. Would love to see a race in Montreal, but there's not a track on the schedule that would give up a date to make that happen.
Any word on the #1 car for next year?
Word? McMurray is going ot re-sign with Bass Pro Shops as the sponsor. These things take time.
I know this is another Jr. question, but why do you think people get so mad and hateful when websites post articles about Jr. It's not like he went out and asked them to do an article on him. The comments I read are so hateful sometimes.
Some people do seem to resent stories on Junior. They think we are wasting our time writing on a driver outside the Chase. The problem is people want to read about him, love or hate. Interesting situation.
Would plans change if Kahne won the title at Red Bull next year or Martin won the title in the 5?
Highly doubt it. Don't think either will happen, anyway.
Will Marcos Ambrose ever feel to love at Montreal? You have to feel horrible for him, and how's the reaction around the NASCAR community with Boris (Said-head here) finally getting that first win?
Ambrose has suffered enough there. Haven't heard a lot either way about Boris' win, but I did order a Said Head this morning. Good win for our ESPN colleague. Only one I know who could win a race in Montreal.
Do you believe that the race for the cchase is down to just the people from 12th on back or do you believe that someone in the top 11 has a chance of falling out of the chase?
I believe it's set. Wish that weren't the case, but unless something drastic happens at Atlanta Richmond will be anticlimatic.
So I was not happy with Kyle Busch turning BK during the Nationwide Race at Bristol, but then I realized I've done the same exact thing go-kart racing
Yeah, but did you cost your owner a shot at the owner's title or lose money in the deal?
Do you think Max Papis could compete regularly with good cars like the one he had courtesy of KHI?
If every race were on a road course he could.
Who do you see having the best finish at Atlanta this weekend, Kurt B. or Tony Stewart?
I like Kurt Busch in this one. Why do you ask?
This weekend, Scott Speed or Paul Menard in the top 10? Don't you think Scott Speed has something to race for now
Scott has had something to race for all season. As for which will finish in the top 10, can I pick neither?
What two drivers will have the best finish out of Junior, Kenseth, Harvick and Kahne this weekend?
Harvick. If you haven't been paying attention, he's been solid almost everywhere this year and Atlanta is a good track for him.
Hi David - Was yesterday the first time in NASCAR history the #09 has found itself in victory lane?
Nope. Brad Keselowski won with it at Talladega last season.
Have you heard anything about Penske possibly giving Parker Kligerman a full time ride next year in Nationwide? He has looked impressive whenever he has been able to run.
Nothing definite. Would depend on if Brad Keselowski gave up his ride. Seems Justin Algaier is destined for another year in NW.
Hi Mr. Newton, If Martinsville hadn't gotten government bailout money would Nascar have moved those 2 dates to other tracks?
Don't think so. NASCAR needs short tracks and Martinsville is one of the few.
QUESTION TO DAVID NEWTON AT 2.25 PM HOWDY DAVID WHOYOUHAVE FOR ATLANTA SUNDAY NIHGHT
Gonna go with Kyle Busch. He's on a roll.
Is Walmart not going to be in Nascar or just Jeff Gordan? Didn't see that one any way JR Smoke or Newman I can see but not JeffThanks!
There was a statement by the company last week that Wal Mart was not going to the 24. That seems to say it all.
David, it seemed as if yesterday's race was a tremendous success. The venue was not only beautiful, but incredibly unique and I was pleasently suprised to see how passionate the race fans were. A common theme in NASCAR is to "grow the sport". Why is this limited to the Nationwide series as opposed to Cup? Based off of yesterday's evidence, a Cup race would be huge.
It is limited because ISC and SMI don't want to give up dates to other tracks. Simple.
Gordon and Stewert claim that they don't care that they are winless but doesn't it really bother those guys that they aren't fast enough to win anymore?
Sure it does. Eats them up I imagine.
Hey Dave,Why doesn't NASCAR bring the Sprint Cup Series to Montreal. The fans always come out in droves for the Nationwide races, and if yesterday's racing was any indication, the racing will certainly be great.
As I said earlier, it's not that simple. There has to be an open date available and no track is willing to give up one. I want to shorten the schedule, not lengthen it. But I would love a race in Montreal.
With Nascar drivers racing into their 50's and older do you think that Rowdy will be winning around 20 Nascar races per year for the next 30 years?
I doubt it, but if he does there'll be records that never will be broken.
Call me bias David, but doesnt NASCAR have to figure out how to get Bristol into The Chase?
I'm biased as well. Too bad we don't run NASCAR.
Jenny (Elizabeth Town LA)If ESPN can not Put the cut races on ESPN3 why not put the races on abcDavid NewtonThere was a decision, and I believe I am correct on this, to stick to ESPN to provide more consistency and not make the fans look around. Are you having troubles? We are here to help. This was last week Yes I am having troubles on my TV LPB FOX ABC and the CW. I love nascar and only get to see 14 fox and 4 on abc so miss a lot races, and that is of troubles!!!!!!!!!!!
Wish I could help you on this one. I'm a lowly scribe and don't run the television side, but will pass along your frustration.
Why are the IRL and ISC feuding with the IRL saying they won't be racing on ISC tracks anymore?
Maybe it's a Bruton Smith ploy to get more races for SMI tracks. Perhaps there is concern ISC wants the IRL to fail since ISC has tight connections to NASCAR.
Hey Newt, how's it going? 2 questions for you. First question, with the success of the 24 and 48 and the lack of success with the 5 and 88 wouldn't it be best to run all 4 teams in 1 shop instead of having 2 shops? Question 2, I know the championship is the most important thing in the sport, but for hendrink as a whole would it be better to win a 5th title with jeff or jimmie or have the 88 and 5 each win a race and run in the top 10 each week to gain momentum for next year?
Going great. As for the 5-88, I don't think moving all four teams under one roof would help. There is more going on there than a building can fix. As for question 2, my guess is Henrick would want a fifth title for Jeff or Jimmie and wins for the 88 and 5. If you gave him a choice I'm pretty sure he'd take the title. Pretty big paycheck.
If Kurt wins Atlanta and Rowdy at Richmond, will the Busch brothers go into the chase as the favorites to win the cup?
Kyle definitely would be among the favorites, but as long as there is a 48 in the field that is the car to beat.
Is there anything going on between Mike Ford and Denny Hamlin? I have heard a few rumors...
They've been a little fustrated with the inconsistency lately, but nothing to break them up. Mike is great for Denny.
Another awesome Nationwide race at Montreal yesterday, but since it's becoming increasingly obvious that a Canadian stop on the Cup series isn't in the cards, is there any worry that eventually the interest will dry up from the crowds?
If anything having the one race will keep interest. They only have one shot to see a race a year. Supply and demand theory.
Do you have any details on Hendricks and Wal-Mart or more importantly, any details on UPS and the 5 car in 2 years?
Have heard UPS will go to Kahne in 2012. As for Wal-Mart, the company released a statement last week saying it would not be on the 24.
How about NASCAR adding Montreal to the schedule, not because they have desireable market, or not because there is a casino nearby, or not because road races are too scarce, but because Montreal has consistently put on one heck of a show! That is reason enough.
Agreed. Now figure out where the date comes from.
Do you think Max Papis will ever make it in cup? Seems if he has a good year in the trucks next year he can find his way back. The guy is great for the sport, always happy to be there, couldn't have come down to two better guys yesterday
Max is great, but it takes more than that to get a good ride these days.
With Walmart saying they won't be sponsoring Jeff Gordon next year, who's the most likely to sponsor the 24?
Heard All State a while back. Was off most of last week, so will dig back into that this week.
Do you think Robby Gordon getting out of the car for Kevin Conway and concentrating on his owner's role, a la Michael Waltrip, will help RGM become more competitive?
Honestly, Conway can't hold a candle to Robby Gordon when it comes to driving a car.
2011 Daytona 500, Whose name is on the hood of the #24 driven by Jeff "5-time Cup Champion" Gordon
For that race I would bet DuPont.
What about Walmart and Jeff Gordon?
Lot of Wal-Mart Gordon questions. Do you really see him shopping for Ella there? Check below.
Why hasn't Danica been entered in any road course races this year? You would think that they would be the "easier" races for her.
Have you looked at her record on road courses in the Indy car? Check it out and get back.
Will we see as much damage from turn 1 stackups with the new car next year? Seems to me the matching bumpers won't lead to as much damage, keeping more guys in contention.
Certainly made a difference with Cup.
What more proof does Nascar need to put a race in Canada? Top 3 guys were all guys I'd love to see win a race. Papis wouldhave cried for sure.
But if you noticed none of them were named Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart or Kyle Busch. Don't think the guys in the lead, other than Ambrose, would have had that chance with a full Cup field.
Do you see Danica racing at Chicagoland Speedway in the Nationwide Series for next year. Craig Rust said he would like indycar to keep the open weekend between the indy 500 & Texas that Danica can race at Chicagoland for the Nationwide Series race.
If that's the way the schedule works out she'll definitely be there.
How come some drivers make excuses about not being good road racers while the best driver like Gordon and Rowdy taught themselves to be great all around racers?
You hear fewer drivers today making that excuse because teams and drivers put a lot of effort into road courses. Some percentage wise more than 1.5 tracks.
I know what Vegas has said abou the chase as far as odds go, but who do you think might be a darkhorse for the title? Do you feel that any Roush driver has a shot at it?
Definitely could see Edwards make a run at it. He's on a top 10 roll that it will take to win the title. He just needs to find his way into Victory Lane.
Any word on if Sadler will run a full-time truck or NW car? Seems a cup vet who has run well in both series like Sadler could secure sponsorship to run a full season, at about half the cost of cup.
Know he has an agreement to run Trucks for KHI, but haven't heard fulltime NW yet. Makes sense, though. Better to have success there than struggle in Cup.
You think Rick Hendrick is experiencing buyers remorse for acquiring Earnhardt Jr.? Recall Hendrick fired Kyle Busch to make room for Earnhardt Jr. I can't quit laughing!
Heck no. No matter how much success Busch has had on the track, I doubt he's matched the financial windfall Hendrick has gotten from Junior.
If NASCAR got some sense and added an existing short track to the current schedule...which one would be best?
Iowa seems like a natural from the support there,
Who will sponsor the 24 with DuPont next year?
Good question that we have addressed several times already in the chat. You interested?
Will Sadler end up in a competitive NW car or Truck next year full-time? He has shown he can win and should be able to bring sponsorship considering the cost is half or less than a full-time cup ride
Trucks with KHI for sure. Love the way he is competing in those.
Since Canada has a CASCAR series how come they don't develop their own series so that NASCAR wouldn't have to race in foreign countries?
Regardless I see no reason why NASCAR shouldn't expand into Canada and Mexico if the market support it.
Hello David, Just a thought. Do you think it would be cool to have the a CWTS race at Irwindale Speedway? It is a short track in a HUGE market. That may work. What do you think?
Not sure if it would draw enough to support. Darlington had 15,000 at its stand-alone event and didn't break even.
I was at the Moto GP in Indy yesterday, and it was incredible to watch 3 series of racing going on. I was thinking about it today and comparing that to NASCAR,it makes NASCAR look like a joke. Could you imagine Valentino Rossi or Nicky Hayden driving in the 125cc or 250cc class? They would blow away the competition, much like what happens in NASCAR.
Glad you enjoyed. Not sure I agree, but glad you enjoyed.
Do you think RCR will put their Chase eggs in the 29 car so they can swap the 29 and Paul Menard's new number so he will be locked in and KH can use his new provisional?
Don't see that happening. Think RCR will somehow buy points from RPM.
Would racing be better off if stock cars ran the majority of races on road courses and open-wheel ran the majority of races on ovals?
That would be too much of a reach. Like the balance in NASCAR the way it is, although would love more short tracks over 1.5-mile tracks.
Does Jr running so well in his last couple NW events, against other cup drivers, show he still has good talent, but something else is missing on his team? Maybe CC issues, maybe overall Hendrick issues, it can't just be him can it?
Remember, in NW there are only about a dozen Cup drivers he has to beat and he is in as good or better equipment than them.
Someone posted on twitter last weekend...KF was going w/KK to Redbull...???Why do you keep saying KK to RB isn't happening? I wish he was going straight to 5
I haven't projected KK going to Red Bull since the RB announcement. As for Kenny Francis, Red Bull would love to pair him with Kahne but Toyota is not thrilled with having KF looking at their stuff for a year and then moving to Hendrick.
no chase for jpm but to me he is better then last year and with jamie's year do you think egr is in position 2 be a championship contender in 2011
They are getting close. Both drivers with a small amount of good luck would be in the Chase now.
I am a Jr fan but with his career landing him at Hendrick and he still is failing to put himself into the Chase or even weekly contention do you think he will ever turn it around and win multiple races in a season again?
Junior Nation would love to know. I personally thought Dale Jr. would win multiple races this year. I still believe he is capable.
With Mr Henricks apparently backing Lance and refusing to change crew chiefs on the #88, is it up to Dale to changes his ways?
It is up to the entire team to rally and work toward the common goal. That's what the 24-48 has that the 5-88 doesn't.
David, What are your thoughts on the restructuring of the PR/Communications department within NASCAR? What are some changes the average fan might see and what will be big changes for you? As an SID here in Virginia, I was wondering if this could be a change that would filter down to the college level.
I'm still digesting what will or will not happen. Those in power definitely believe there is a disconnect. How they will go about mending that I am not sure. I've worked covering sports at all levels and can't say the PR department in NASCAR is much different than anywhere else.
Hi David the best winners quote this year from Boris "You can?t believe how much fun it is without police chasing you"
That was classic. Just wonder how he knows how that feels.
Who are your NFL and College picks to win it all this season?
Packers in NFL and my wife will kill me if I say Bama will not repeat in college. Having said that, Florida. Can I have a place to sleep tonight?
Who do you have in your top five for this weekend's race at Atlanta?
Busch, Busch, Edwards, Johnson, Gordon. No particular order. Other than a Busch will win.
Who wins first? Stewart or Gordon? And are either one of them a realistic threat for the title. I think Smoke is a sleeping giant.
Gordon. I like Gordon's chances better at the title as well. But you are right, Smoke is a sleeping giant, so to speak.
Dover will mark Dale jr's 100th race at Henricks, Will there be a special celebration?
Only if he wins.
Is Jeff Gordon still a legit title contender, and do you still see him winning any races this season?
Yes and yes.
Will you be in richmond for races?
I will be. Love that track.
When Alan G. said that #5 "sucked" at Bristol isn't he criticizing himself?
That's one way of looking at it.
Hello David, I am making my first trip to Atlanta this coming weekend. I have pit passes for Sunday. Any recommendations on things to see or food to check out at the track?????
Food recommendation, bring me something. As for what to see, if you can get in the garage before the race watching the teams make final preparation always is fun. As for pit road, make srue you're there for pre-race introductions. You get to see the wives, girlfriends, children. It's one of the more fun moments of the day.
Do you feel with the sluping economy and people having to give up luxeries like cable tv that part of Nascar's declining numbers and ratings are due to the fact people can't see the races on regular TV?
I would like to think ESPN is regular TV these days.
Is it possible that Dale jr will never win another Sprint Cup race sort of like Bobby Labonte?
I don't think Dale Jr. has reached that point yet.
When am I gonna win!?!
Aren't you in the Hamptons? How about Charlotte?
I will ask a Junior question cause NOBODY else has.... Are AMP and Mt Dew happy with a 20th place finisher?
Can't imagine they are, although they'd rather finish 20th with NASCAR's most popular driver than with somebody fans didn't follow.
At their peak who would you say was the best driver: Ryan Newman, Kevin Harvick, or Carl Edwards?
Good question to end on. I'll say Edwards. He was so close to winning the title twice. And when he gets hot he runs of victories in bunches.
Thanks for putting up with me over McGee. Sorry I couldn't get to all the questions. I'll be back chatting either Wednesday or Friday or possibly both, so there's another opportunity coming. Have a great week.
