Chat with David Newton

David Newton
  (1:59 PM)

Welcome to I-85 chat on my way to Atlanta. No, I am not driving. Ernie the dog isn't, either. Fire away and let's seeh how this works.

Logan (Berkley, MA)

Do u have a championship favorite? I like the the 24 and 48.

David Newton
  (2:00 PM)

I am with you on that one. First, until JJ is eliminated it's hard to not consider him the favorite. But I've got a sneaky hunch that Jeff Gordon is going to win a few races and make a run at this. Call me crazy.

David Newton
  (2:01 PM)

Probably sometime next year during the Chase. Maybe one of the final three races. But that's just a guess. They could do it at any time, but they want to get her Nationwide program going first.

David Newton
  (2:04 PM)

Sorry about the delay. Lost connection. I'll go with Kyle Busch in the 300 since he wins all Nationwide races it seems and Jeff Gordon in the Cup race

jacob from oak grove mo [via mobile]

wat is going on with june bug all three of his team mates are performing like they should why ain't he i mean he has good equipment there and alot of good help around now im not saying he should be driving like his dad cause there ain't no one who can but it just rubs me the wrong way to see my favorite driver not performing like i know how he can

David Newton
  (2:05 PM)

Excuse me. Mark Martin has been a huge disappointment this year. He's not far from where Junior is in points. yes, the 24 and 48 have performeed, but remember the 24 hasn't won a race, either.

Matt (Surprise)

David, I mentioned it yesterday to ED - now I'm gonna run it by you. If Nascar wants to be fair with tracks and fans regarding 1 or 2 trips to a particular track a year why dont they hit 26 tracks in the 1st 26 races? Include Montreal and/or Road America, Ohio and i'm sure there are more. So what if one track is close to another market, so you go to that "market area" twice and you get the same fans at 2 different races..... its a win win..... why wont it happen? GREED!! Nascar has the alimighty buck in mind before the fans, they have SMI & ISC in mind before the fans..... Your thoughts?

David Newton
  (2:07 PM)

You would have a rebellion among ISC and SMI if they tried to go to one race at the first 26 events. Would be interesting and open the door for more venues to host tracks, but those that would gain aren't owned by one of the above and again would cause conflict. Yep, Greed. Not sure it needs to be that drastic, though, but it would be a good shakeup.

Clarence (KS)

David- Any thoughts on a knockout-style chase format; several drivers dropping off after a number of races, etc.?

David Newton
  (2:08 PM)

Too gimmicky for me.

JOEB (ONT)

Hi David good artical on BK and how areyou going to chat and drive at the same time!!!!!!!!

David Newton
  (2:08 PM)

Oh, I am multi-talented. Actually have a beautiful chauffer I call my wife at the controls. Now if I could get her off her cell phone ...

Tracy (CT)

Didn't the race last weekened prove that we don't need Cup guys in the NW races?!

David Newton
  (2:09 PM)

To a degree. But Canada is a market simply hungry for racing. Not sure fans in the states would be as anxious to buy tickets without Cup guys. Your thoughts?

Paulie (NY)

Flashback 3-4 years ago, would Jr. been better off signing with Gibbs given how he obviously does not fit in at Hendricks?

David Newton
  (2:11 PM)

I wouldn't say he doesn't fit in. And I don't think Gibbs would have been the answer. Think he was happiest at Dale Earnhardt Inc. where he was surrounded by family and he had a say so in what happened.

Geraldine (NY)

Do you see BK taking his revenge on Edwards and Busch when the races really matter, ie, in the Chase?

David Newton
  (2:12 PM)

No, don't see that happening. Really think the biggest weapon is to let them think he might take revenge and not do it. Then they'll always have that in the back of their minds.

Thomas (MN)

Nice article on Brad. Do you see him getting the top 10 that Crash'em Carl denied him in the spring this weekend?

David Newton
  (2:13 PM)

The horsepower just hasn't been there with his Cup team the last few months. Would have been interesting to see if his season had been different if that first Atlanta finish has been completed.

Phil (NH)

After two years, whats your take on how Logano is doing? Is he in danger of losing his ride if the Home Depot keeps missing the Chase?

David Newton
  (2:13 PM)

No danger of losing his ride. To be honest, I thought he'd be closer to making a run at making the Chase this year. Thought top 15 was reasonable with his equipment and crew. But give him time. The talent is there.

Cody (NE)

Do you think that sly dog Jeff Gordon is saving a few things up his sleeve for the chase?

David Newton
  (2:14 PM)

Don't think he's saving much, but I do think he'll be a factor.

Taylor (Philadelphia)

Is Kurt going to lose his mojo when he drops the Miller Lite car, Like Dale Jr. did when he left the Bud Light car?

David Newton
  (2:15 PM)

You really think the sponsor has anything to do with this? I don't.

Ryan (VA)

Someone wrote on ESPN this week that sometimes its better having one race. Why not spread the wealth around and have them race in more tracks. You can keep two for the major speedways (Daytona, Bristol, Richmond, Charlotte, Dega)

David Newton
  (2:16 PM)

Think I wrote that. Look at my answer earlier in the chat on having one at more tracks. That may be ideal in fantasy land, but reality says no.

Cody (NE)

Why isnt there a road race in the chase? Shouldn't the champion be a well-rounded driver?

David Newton
  (2:16 PM)

NASCAR believes that since there are only 2 road course in the regular season that a road course in the Chase would not be representative of the schedule. I disagree.

Brian (North Carolina)

Hey David.Just read your article on BK and really enjoyed it.I'm one of those who like Brad and have so since before he even won his first race, long before he got all the attention he does now.I'm glad he came along when he did because quite frankly NASCAR was beginning to not be fun anymore for me.Now I've got someone who makes it exciting and gives me a reason to watch. My question for you though is,at anytime during your interview did Brad express any interest in running or just out right say he would run full time again next year in Nationwide if NASCAR allows it?

David Newton
  (2:18 PM)

Thanks. We really didn't get into that, but good question. I'll ask this weekend.

Tracy (CT)

Why has ESPN not reported on Robby Gordon eXtending his ride to Conway? :-)

David Newton
  (2:18 PM)

An oversight I suppose. I sent the release to the news desk and put it on twitter. Will follow up this weekend.

Taylor (Philadelphia)

Are we going to see more guys running truck series to try to follow in KB's footsteps?

David Newton
  (2:19 PM)

If you mean Cup drivers, no. Why would they?

Jimmi (CA)

How many more years do you see - Stewart, Johnson, Burton, Gordon (the old guard) competing?

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

Let's see, Stewart 9 years, Johnson 16, Burton 3, Gordon 6. Heck, I don't know. Gordon once indicated he might not go beyond 40 and now he wants to continue so his children can see how daddy makes a living. You never know with any of them.

Tracy (CT)

My thoughts? I like some cup guys in the NW races. Just not the same ones running every race. Race limits!

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

Agreed. Good thoughts.

junebugzfan88 (michigan)

Fans are comparing Kyle to Dale Earnhardt. I say Dale would never double flip off the fans like Kyle did after the Bristol race. Your thoughts on the comparisons?

David Newton
  (2:21 PM)

Think the comparison is in driving style, not personality.

Larry (MI)

So all reports have McGrew coming back next year. Do you see a possibility that other moves will be made, maybe move Ron Malec to the 88 in some capacity.

David Newton
  (2:22 PM)

They made changes this year. My advice if anybody wants it is to let things stay status quo and build continuity.

hannah (wy)

when crew chiefs move from one organizatiion to another, do they take their notes as well as any intelligence from one org to another?

David Newton
  (2:23 PM)

Mentally they do. Sure any notes they have, unless there is something in the contract that allows them to keep them, stay with the organizatio.

Anthony (NC)

Just curious to hear your thoughts on veterans like Scott Riggs who it seems cannot get back into quality equipment in any series...will we see the likes of Scott Riggs and Johnny Benson in full-time rides anytime soon?

David Newton
  (2:24 PM)

Not Cup. If they want to get back to that level they need to go to Nationwide and have success. Not saying they aren't capable of Cup now, but they need to convince owners, not me.

TG (PA)

Dave, went to your state of NC on the outer banks. Had to evacuate because of the hurricane. Very disappointed to only get 3 days to vacation with our kids. Darn hurricane.

David Newton
  (2:24 PM)

Bummer. Beautiful area. Think it has passed, though. You could return and get in three good days through Monday.

John (Gilbert, AZ)

Will Montreal ever make it to Cup?

David Newton
  (2:25 PM)

Only if there is a demand by top drivers and somebody is willing to give up a date to make it happen. Shame it's that difficult.

Janice (WA)

If you could be a fly on the wall at any raceshop, which team would you like to know more about what's going on?

David Newton
  (2:25 PM)

Interesting question. I'd go with the 88-5 shop. Love to hear what they really believe is wrong.

Nick Rolando (Orlando)

David, like your Florida pick BTW, Go Gators! I know back at Chicagoland that Loomis said RPM would be a 3-4 car team in 2011, what happened to those plans?

David Newton
  (2:26 PM)

Shhhh. You're going to make my Bama wife wreck and this chat will end fast. As for Loomis' plan, he's still trying to get a third, but four doesn't seem realistic.

Terry (DC)

who do you have, VT or Boise State?

David Newton
  (2:27 PM)

I'm going to go with Boise State. If they have any hope of playing for a National championship they have to win this one. Virginia Tech could lose and then run the table and be in the picture. All about the conference.

Taylor (Philadelphia)

Is this 'Changing Lanes' pitch good for the sport? Wouldn't it be better to simply pick the best young drivers to compete, ala Ultimate Fighter?

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

Not sure how I feel about it yet. Can't say I disagree with your theory though.

Jake (Bay City, Mi)

whats up david? I'm very excited for the race this weekend and I've got a sneaking suspicion that the 48 car is going to shake off his slump this weekend and show us that he truly is in chase form. (It would have happened last week in my opinion if it wasn't for that bonehead driving the 42 car).

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

I have a sneaky suspicion you are right. In fact, planning to explore that with my column on Saturday.

Larry (MI)

Any idea what causes the black smoke coming from the Gibbs cars? I have heard it mentioned on the broadcast but never heard a straight answer.

David Newton
  (2:29 PM)

Haven't paid a lot of attention to it. Could be the motor oil. Think they have their own brand.

Hayden (Pottstown, PA)

I read that Nationwide might make Cup drivers ineligible for the championship. Good move?

David Newton
  (2:30 PM)

That is the talk. I am torn. If a Cup guy is willing to drive the entire schedule he should be allowed to compete for the title. Otherwise limit the number of races for a Cup guy. That will solve the problem.

Tim (AZ)

Happy Friday David. Have you heard any numbers from the engines nascar took to dyno a few weeks back?

David Newton
  (2:31 PM)

NASCAR doesn't release that. Most of that information comes from digging around the teams. Since they've been on a break and I have too I'll check on it th is weekend.

Jake (Irving, TX)

Hey Newt, please explain why the driver of the Penske 12/22 runs his mouth about being tough, agressive and not taking stuff from anyone but when Carl or Rowdy do exactly the same thing the fans say NASCAR should penalize them?

David Newton
  (2:33 PM)

The difference is I haven't seen BK purposely wreck those guys. He's rubbed them which is part of racing. Edwards and Busch have purposely wrecked them, putting BK in danger and other drivers. That's why fans have cried out when Edwards and Busch have been what you call tough and aggresssive.

Larry (MI)

Have you heard anything about Nascar allowing team to practice on sanctioned tracks next year?

David Newton
  (2:34 PM)

What I hear is they will open the tracks a day earlier on race weekends and let the teams come in and test. Since everybody has to come to the track anyway that weekend, it would save teams money and give teams more real information.

Tracy (CT)

I read somewhere that RC wants a 2 truck team and he wants to bring Austins brother Ty into the other truck? Any word on if this is true and how abbut RCR and KHI combining for NW/Truck? It would be great for young Dillon to have Horniday as a team mate.

David Newton
  (2:35 PM)

Wrote a month ago that the plan is for RCR to run its Nationwide program through KHI and to run a two-truck program out of RCR. Haven't heard about expanding that to three trucks, but could see it happening.

Red (NC)

Do you think some of the older guys guys like Stewart, Newman, Kenseth, Burton, Gordon if he wasn"t in a Hendrick car, etc. are washed up, or at least non competitive with guys like Busch in the series? Basically, has their time passed?

David Newton
  (2:36 PM)

Washed up? Gordon is second in points. He has more top 5s than anybody, or at least close to the most. All five are in the top 12, so if you want to say somebody is washed up look deeper into the field.

Kevin (Texas)

With this Sunday being the last time Nascar won't be competing with major college football and the NFL is there any chance they look into changing times/dates so they don't go head to head with he NFL. I am a Nascar fan, but if its between the Cowboys and Nascar, I'm watching the Cowboys.

David Newton
  (2:38 PM)

It's a tough situation and no real solution unless NASCAR cuts the schedule and there's no indication that's happening. I'd like to see them move to a few Thursday night specials in the Chase, but track owners don't like that because it impacts the campers. I feel your pain. I love the NFL as well.

Ryan (Ventura CA)

Who is the Cup team Salder is in talks with?

David Newton
  (2:39 PM)

He and I had a long talk a few weeks ago and he didn't mention a significant team. I know he plans to run Trucks for Harvick and has talked about driving some Nationwide. He's really enjoyed the success he's had in those series and it makes no sense to go to a Cup team that can't give him the ability to win.

Jake (Irving, TX)

You don't think that what's his name driving the James Finch car purposely wrecked Carl Edwards at Dega in 2009?

David Newton
  (2:41 PM)

Heck no. He held his line driving for the win. Edwards put himself in that position blocking. Do you think Regan Smith should have lost the Dega race to Tony Stewart because he had to go below the yellow line not to wreck Tony?

Dave (Boston)

Dale hater. But I love reading the questions and comments. Here's my comment to Jr Nation: Why would the guy want to win? He's got several endorsements and a legion of blindly loyal fans. He has the same perks as an also-ran as he would as a champ. If advertisers and fans didn't settle for mediocrity, then he would have no choice than to snap out of it. Where's the motivation?

David Newton
  (2:41 PM)

He has enough pride where he doesn't want to settle for mediocrity.

Ryan (Ventura CA)

I'm with Kevin make the majority of the chase races Saturday night after the USC games!

David Newton
  (2:42 PM)

I'd go for more Saturday night races, but ESPN televises too many college football games to make that work I'm guessing.

Nick Rolando (Orlando)

David, haha if your wife gets mad, I'll send some Florida football basketball or baseball tickets your way. Next yr Bama comes to the Swamp.

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

Have covered many games in the Swamp. One of my favorite places. Will take tickets to Bama game there but can't promise she won't show up in Crimson Tide colors.

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

Have covered many games in the Swamp. One of my favorite places. Will take tickets to Bama game there but can't promise she won't show up in Crimson Tide colors.

Gary (Rhode Island)

With Boris, Dale jr and Stewart all having an equal number of NASCAR wins in 2010 would you rate them equal for the year?

David Newton
  (2:44 PM)

Hardly. Stewart is far ahead on this list.

Barb (Hillard, Ohio)

Who do you figure loses patience with Dale jr first: Pepisco or Mr. Hendricks?

David Newton
  (2:45 PM)

Sponsor first. Mr. H is driven to make him win.

Barb (Hillard, Ohio)

Sat. night, the IRL race at Kentucky goes head to head with the Nationwide race. What sort of ratings do you expect for each event?

David Newton
  (2:46 PM)

That'll be an interesting mix from a ratings and attendance standpoint. I suspect there's a college football game that will surpass both. I'm told I'm watching Bama play Little Sisters of the Poor.

Nick Rolando (Orlando)

One last question, Best Buy is going to re-sign with Dinger? I can try to get your wife and u tickets next yr if she sends them my way the Gator boys visit T-town this yr, but I get wear my Gator gear.

David Newton
  (2:49 PM)

You nearly made her wreck the car. Not sure of her connections. You would be takinng your life in your hands with Gator gear.

Lori (ON)

What happened to the "No Dale Jr" chat? Since you keep bringing him up I'll ask this: Do you think Jr's sponosr's will get fed up and walk away from him?

David Newton
  (2:50 PM)

whoa! I haven't brought him up. You guys keep asking. I really like chatting about Dale Jr. or whatever you guys want. This is your forumn. I am just a pawn here.

JOEB (ONT)

In Canada on saturday TSN (ESPN canada) is showing the IRL race after the Nationwide race.

David Newton
  (2:50 PM)

Not a bad option.

Jason (Summit Point, NJ)

Do you like Rowdy tonight for his "Drive for 5"?

David Newton
  (2:50 PM)

Wouldn't best against him.

David Newton
  (2:51 PM)

Did I mention the sun is burning down on my laptop and I can barely see the screen? If there are any typos please forgive.

Bill (Reno)

Kyles drive for 5 as his band wagon fans call it is tainted. He did not race in the NW race last weekend. He cherrypicked 2 or if he wins tonight 3 truck wins.

David Newton
  (2:52 PM)

Hey, as long as he wins the ones he enters I can't dis him.

Taylor (Philadelphia)

Any way McMurray's going to sneak into the chase?

David Newton
  (2:53 PM)

I wish. I believe he deserves to be there more than those who haven't won a race. Anybody who wins the Daytona 500, Brickyard 400 and is second at Charlotte and Darlington should be there. Need to make a provision for the Chase.

Lori (ON)

Newt, that was a joke from your twitter jab the other day, remember smart ass??? You were going to make fun of some else for a change. I know you're a closet Junya lover just like the rest of us.

David Newton
  (2:54 PM)

I didn't take the smart ... comment personal. As Brad Keselowski says in my column, too many drivers have forgotten how to have fun in this sport. I could say the same for people in life in general. Thanks.

Joanne (Littleton, CO)

Kyle tweeted that he and Samantha drove from Chicago to Kentucky but Kentucky to Atlanta is 800 miles. How does Rowdy get to Atlanta in time for tomorrows morning practice after tonights race?

David Newton
  (2:55 PM)

I haven't looked at the miles, but he has a motorcoach driver so they can sleep in the back after the race and be in Atlanta in plenty of time if they are using the motorcoach. Make sense?>

Bill (Reno)

If only one of his wins come in the series that matters then I can dis him!

David Newton
  (2:56 PM)

It's a free country. Dis away.

Ed (Fort Worth)

I agree it's hard not to pick against JJ in the Chase, but you can't forget about Harvick. He has consistency this year to go along with his wins, something they didn't have last year. I hope he gets another championship for Childress. Go Vols!

David Newton
  (2:57 PM)

Totally agreed. Even JJ says Harvick has to be the favorite the way that team is performing. Go Terriers! Wofford almun here.

Diane (Los Angeles )

And you thought your Wednesday crowds were bad - this is kinda like the Monday crowd Ryan had two weeks ago. Geez

David Newton
  (2:57 PM)

How so? I love the banter. Fun to make the ride to Atlanta go by faster. Too bad I can't do it for the entire trip.

Jason (Summit Point, NJ)

An when Rowdy wins his next NASCAR race that will be NASCAR victory number 80. Does that deserve honorable mention?

David Newton
  (2:59 PM)

It's pretty dang impressive. People talk about Richard Petty's 200 wins all being at the top level, but many were against fields no better than what Busch faces in Trucks and Nationwide. I will go back and look at the numbers, but bet Petty ran as many races as Busch some years. Probably more.

Harry (Cleveland)

Why doesn't Jr just start and park? His performance sucks but he would be more consistabt and his fans are too stupid to know or care.

David Newton
  (3:00 PM)

Because he has better equipment than any start-and-parker and more talent than those guys as well. Get real.

TG (PA)

Does your wife like Nascar? Who is her favorite driver?

David Newton
  (3:01 PM)

She has a lot of clients in the sport. Her twitter name has an 88 on the end but she's not a Dale Jr. fan. She's really impartial. Works out best for her and me.

Tracy (CT)

Do Kyles "fans" know that he has not called himself Rowdy since he stoped driving the 51 truck?

David Newton
  (3:02 PM)

Doesn't matter. Knicknames are for those calling him that. I had one as a kid I did't like but it stuck.

Chad (Illinois)

Woo hoo! Thanks for telling that guy to get real. Any truth to UPS on the 5 car with Kahne in 2012? If so, what does that do to Ragan's chances of staying at Roush?

David Newton
  (3:03 PM)

That is what I am hearing. Ragan probably would have been gone this year but Roush had to keep him to keep UPS.

David Newton
  (3:03 PM)

That's it for me. Wife says I have to take th e wheel so she can work for a while. Has been fun and made the drive a little shorter. See you in Atlanta.
