Chat with David Newton

David Newton
  (2:29 PM)

Welcome from the media center at Richmond International Raceway where the big drama is what we will have for dinner. Some are saying Saturday night's race will be great because there is nothing to lose. What do you think? Fire away.

Brian (North Carolina)

Hey David.I asked you last week if BK mentioned in your interview with him any interest or definite plans in running Nationwide full time again next year if it's allowed by NASCAR.You said it never came up but that you would ask this past weekend at Atlanta.Just wondering if you were able to ask him and if so,what's the answer you got? Thanks!

David Newton
  (2:30 PM)

Sorry, but got busy with other stuff and never did, but he really can't say until NASCAR makes a ruling on what its plan will be. Penske also has to decide if he plans to use the series for developmental or to win the title.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

If there is not an IZOD IndyCar race on the weekend of July 8-11 will Danica Patrick race in the Inaugural Blue Grass 400 at Kentucky Speedway?

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

Would think so. Have made inquiries and waiting to hear back.

Logan (Berkley)

Hi David! Do u think Jeff Gordon will ever win a race in the rest of his life? Sorry if this sounded hopeless but i'm an impatient teenager lol

David Newton
  (2:33 PM)

I do. And I would almost gurantee it will happen before the end of this season. Just a hunch.

James (North Little Rock)

All week I've been hearing rumors about the Chase expanding to either 15+ drivers and/or an elimination system. Please tell me this isn't going to happen, the regular season is already on the verge of meaningless as it is

David Newton
  (2:34 PM)

That was the talk a few months ago. It's settled down a bit. Think the reaction from fans such as yourself have caused NASCAR to pause. I don't see any announcement coming out until this Chase has played out. I hear you, though. And agree with you.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who do you think will win the Virginia 529 College Savings 250 & the Air Guard 400 at Richmond?

David Newton
  (2:34 PM)

Kyle Busch and Kyle Busch.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What race do you think that Danica Patrick will make her Sprint Cup Series Debut in?

David Newton
  (2:34 PM)

Would only be guessing, but it wouldn't surprise me to see Phoenix this year. Home track, so to speak.

Ed (NC)

Who is Newman going to take out this week?

David Newton
  (2:35 PM)

Let's see who's left . . . himself?

Ed (NC)

With the 16 & 99 running good after taking Kenny's set-ups for the 9 car, why wouldn't Roush try to hire Kenny at RFR?

David Newton
  (2:36 PM)

Sure they'd love to get Kenny, but so would Hendrick Motorsports to possibly stay with Kahne.

Matthew (Columbia, NJ)

Can we expect some payback this weekend from Biffle or Kahne against Newman?

David Newton
  (2:37 PM)

I don't look for payback to come from anybody until the Chase to be honest. Why waste it here, although if it's Biffle he may need to get it out of the way before the Chase starts. On the other hand, does he really want to make an enemy before the Chase?

Mike (Nijmegen, Netherlands)

Is Richmond an impound race?

David Newton
  (2:37 PM)

Yep. No touching the cars after qualifying.

Nick Rolando (Orlando)

David, since your in Richmond, you mind asking Robbie Loomis about how many cars RPM will have next year and if they get assistance from Roush in finding sponsors? Thanks!

David Newton
  (2:38 PM)

He told me last week he hopes to have three, possibly four, but three more realistic. Think they are waiting to see what happens to Sam Hornish Jr. and Scott Speed. One might make a good candidate.

Jenny (My new Expedition in NJ)

Do you think that any changes would be needed if Dale Jr won the last 4 Championships? Think about that. If the most popular driver miraculously won a cup, would they even care about anything else?

David Newton
  (2:39 PM)

There are those that believe this. I personally don't think any major changes are needed regardless.

Tyler (Iowa)

Can you tell me anyting about Dave Blaney's new ride? How do you forsee this Redbull/hendrick ride working out for Kasey kahne in the next couple of years?

David Newton
  (2:40 PM)

Not a lot on Blaney other than its owner is based in Ohio. As for Kahne, it's pretty cut and dry. Kahne drives for Red Bull next year and then goes to the 5 in 2012. Seems like a wasted year to me, but it's the way it is. Kahne is relatively young, so he has plenty of time to get things together.

TG (PA)

Dave, I saw the picture of Jr's hauler passing you on the road. I think Lance got the engines mixed up and put Jr's engine in his hauler instead of his car. His practice times were awful.

David Newton
  (2:41 PM)

Funny. You're right on practice times, but that was the sounvenir hauler. It was fast, though. Blew my doors off.

Christine (Jasper,IN)

I know you probably get tired of Dale Jr. questions, but this is just a comment. Someone on another chat said she thinks fans would have wanted Dale Sr. to have someone like Kyle as a son rather than the one he had. Don't you think that is a slap in the face to Jr? Kyle may be talented, but I think Dale Sr. would have wanted to have someone with more respect and manners like Jr. than someone who can win sometimes. I think the Jr. bashing is getting way out of hand.

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

Agreed, bashing way out of hand. I don't know of a father who would trade his son in for another, so I don't see the point. And honestly, Dale Sr. was so busy racing for much of his kid's lives that if he had a wish it would be that he could have spent more time with his kids.

Aj (Indy )

Please Nascar, don't do it !!! I can maybe see something where there are 5 guys left with 2 or 3 race's to go, but not 5 in the last race. If they do this, they have lost me as a fan. I have stuck up for them for the last 6 or year and get mad when someone talks crap about Nascar, but if they do this, I am done. This isn't Football or Baseball and never will be. All those games are a best of "#" series. It's not the same, unless they want to run the Homestead race 4 times in 4 weeks and see who can score the most points.

David Newton
  (2:44 PM)

I am with you. Elimination woudl be too gimicky.

RAY GORDON REID ( FAIRFAX VA 22030 )

QUESTION TO DAVID NEWTON AT 2.45PM HIDAVID WHO YOU HAVE FOR TOMORROW NIGHT

David Newton
  (2:45 PM)

Kyle Busch....Kyle Busch....Kyle Busch.

Aj (Indy )

Wow...sorry, but this has me fired up !!!! Who in their right mind, thinks this is good for Nascar ? I get the elimination part of it, I can see that being kinda cool, but not going into the last race with 5 drivers on even ground for the championship. Just leave it alone NASCAR !!! Stop trying to be something your not and your not the NFL or MLB. It's not those 5 drivers against each other in the last race.....it's those 5 drivers against 37 other drivers on the track at the same time !!!! It would be like the NFL saying they are going to let all the NFL teams on the field at the same time while the Saints and the Colts are playing for the Championship....You don't want Sam Hornish wrecking and taking out 3 of the 5 drivers in the last race...DO YOU ? stupid stupid stupid.

David Newton
  (2:46 PM)

Five. It won't be that many if they do it the way I've heard. Glad you are fire dup, though. Makes the chat more fun.

Andy (MD)

Which one would be a bigger story, Kyle Busch winning the Sprint Cup Series at Richmond or NFL kickoff weekend?

David Newton
  (2:46 PM)

NFL kickoff weekend. Did you see the ratings for the Saints-Vikings? Over 17.0. Cup race might be lucky to get 4.0.

Borat (Kazakhstan)

NASCAR is cool............... Not

David Newton
  (2:47 PM)

Everybody is entitled to an opinion. So if you don't like it, why are you here? Want to ask a Brett Favre question?

Larry (MI)

I don't understand how a car from Hendrick Motorsports can constantly come off the truck slow. Jr was 38th in first practice behind teams that may not even make the race. To me it appears the cars are not being properly set up at the shop because by final practice they are usually up somewhere near the 20's. I think some heads need to start rolling at the shop.

David Newton
  (2:48 PM)

First, Junior is locked into the race. As for coming off the truck slow there is no excuse for that when his teammates aren't nearly that bad. And consider this is one of Junior's favorite tracks. Scratching my head.

Diane (Los Angeles)

Tell the truth, you and Dustin are just sniping in Twitterland because you're bored that the Chase field is all but locked up and there's no real drama this weekend aren't you :D

David Newton
  (2:50 PM)

Really, he is just off target with this one. Drivers try hard every week. They can't all of a sudden crank it up a notch because for this one race there's nothing to lose. Dustin just needs to move on to another subject.

Emily (NJ)

David, I feel that tweaking the Chase seemingly every few years dilutes the integrity of the Chase. Do you agree?

David Newton
  (2:51 PM)

I do, and Carl Edwards addressed that just a few minutes ago. He would like to see it fixed one way for 10 years or so. On the other hand, the system has changed throughout history. Richard Petty won I believe under four or five different systems.

Andy (MD)

Any news on new sponsor for SHR??

David Newton
  (2:51 PM)

Still hearing Mobile 1.

Todd (Ga)

Today in 1st practice Dale Jr is 38th at a track he has won at 3 times. To me that team looks as lost as they have ever been. Do you think that amp and national guard will be putting pressure on Mr. H to make some major changes to that team? Even though every one says no changes are planned I cannot see them continuing to let the 88 run like it is.

David Newton
  (2:52 PM)

Mr. H doesn't need a sponsor to feel the pressure to turn this team around, but he seems committed to making Earnhardt and McGrew work.

Diane (Los Angeles)

Or is this all still a carry over from your basketball smack talk in Michigan?

David Newton
  (2:52 PM)

It's a fulltime job talking smack with Dustin.

Emily (NJ)

David, is it me or is Joey Logano not exactly as Godly as everyone thinks he is? Last year was the "he's a young rookie" excuse for not running great, but what is the excuse this year? He is with one of the best teams and crew chiefs in the garage.

David Newton
  (2:54 PM)

Have been thinking about that one for the past week. Sure, the expectations were high, but he's only 20 and to be doing what he's doing is pretty remarkable. And remember, the plan wasn't for him to enter Cup until maybe this year. The process was sped up because Stewart left a year early.

Mark (Mount Airy, MD)

Hello David, I had a great time in my first visit to Atlanta last weekend (despite the fact that My driver finished last). Speaking of Denny, will the #11 team turn things around come The Chase?????

David Newton
  (2:56 PM)

Hard to answer. You'd think with the talant and equipment he has there's no way that team wouldn't make a run at the title. But remember Kyle Busch was having a great year in 2008 and disappeared in the Chase.

Rob F (Hoboken, NJ)

Hey David, nice piece on Mayfield. While it's tough to believe a combination of over the counter meds led to a false positive for meth, does NASCAR really have any credit when it comes to testing? Didn't they say Tim Richmond was doing drugs when he was really dying?

David Newton
  (2:57 PM)

Thanks. The new drug testing policy in place I believe is sound, so I won't say anything else about that. As for Richmond, that was a different time and an era when the sport tried to cover up what really was happening. OK. so that still may go on to a degree, but not as much.

sean (michigan)

dave went jr win a race

David Newton
  (2:58 PM)

July 4, 2013.

Jean (TN)

Are you suprised that SHR lost Old Spice. I see those commercials and Tony sure doesn't have that fresh clean look.

David Newton
  (2:58 PM)

The marketing just headed in a different direction. So no surprise here. You?

Billy Bob (TN)

If Mayfield had done the rehab w/Nascar, do you think he would have a ride today?

David Newton
  (2:59 PM)

He'd be trying to get one, and maybe still have his own team. But remember he had to start his own team because he didn't have a ride. That may answer your question.

Kevin (Newburgh, IN)

Nationwides plan for not allowing a cup driver to win it's championship, do you see less cup drivers running both and how will in affect sponsorship ?

David Newton
  (3:01 PM)

If it's done right NASCAR can enjoy the best of both worlds. Nationwide needs a certain amount of Cup drivers in the field to sell tickets. But if you listen to fans they want to see the champion somebody who doesn't drive Cup fulltime. My problem with this is that if a Cup driver wants to and does drive fulltime in Nationwide then shouldn't he have the right to compete for the title?

Tracy (CT)

Newton! Who you got to win this weekend....j/k Danica Jr Kyle Jr Danica waa! J/k My real question is Aric is out running the 88 in NW in the 7. With him driving the 88 fulltime nest year, shouldn't he be in it and not the 7. It would be better then Sadler in it.

David Newton
  (3:01 PM)

Hey, Sadler has done a nice job in the 88 this season. As for my winner, see below. But hint, hint, it's the same driver for both races.

Dustin (Office)

Do you think Carl Edwards has a legitimate shot of winning the Chase this year?

David Newton
  (3:02 PM)

I do. Look at his numbers the past two months. Other than wins nobody is better.

Chris (NC)

Can we wait until Kyle Busch has really achieved something in Cup before we label him the next great driver? He's very talented, but I'm not impressed by his domination of the minors. Comparing someone with a few wins to a seven time Cup champion seems far fetched to me.

David Newton
  (3:03 PM)

Let me put it this way, and I have in no way made final judgment on this, but many of Richard Petty's 200 wins came in fields not the equivalent of Truck or Nationwide races today. And he ran like 60-plus races a year many times. Kyle doesn't have that luxury. Ultimately, though, Kyle will be judged on how many Cup titles he has.

Tracy (CT)

I can't help but laugh at Kyles pink car. I just can't help it!!!

David Newton
  (3:04 PM)

Hot, isn't it?

Phil (Richmond, Va.)

What would be the bigger shock: Newman moving in to the chase or Sadler pulling off the double?

David Newton
  (3:04 PM)

Wow. Why didn't you toss in Dale Jr. winning a race?

Aj (Indy )

What's next for Nascar ? Telling them no blocking, awarding a champion for the road and oval race's ? Giving them a turbo, I man, push to pass button ? FYI - This weeks race will be one of the best of the year....your going to tell 10 of the best drivers in the sport that points mean nothing on Saturday and to do anything to get the win....Gidddyyyuuuppp !!!!

David Newton
  (3:05 PM)

You're pretty fired up.

Dustin (Office)

Who is Hendrick going to get to sponsor Jeff Gordon next year?

David Newton
  (3:05 PM)

Nothing new. Keep an eye out for AllState.

Larry (MI)

Heard about any interest in Tony Jr as a crew chief in Cup or do you think he will wait for JR Motorsports to come to Cup?

David Newton
  (3:07 PM)

I'll go with waiting. He's pretty much committed to Dale Jr. and family.

Ricky (Yuba City)

Guess Who??!! Biffle. What do you think about the Biff's season? I'm happy with it, as a Biffle fan. Shrimp cocktails for everyone!!

David Newton
  (3:07 PM)

I actually expected more out of Biff this season. Why are you so happy with 11th place?

Andy (MD)

What about Jeff Gordon and Walmart sponsor deal?? Did they broke up?

David Newton
  (3:08 PM)

Nothing's going on. Reported that last weekend. But Wal-Mart will be a big player in the sport distributing diecasts, t-shirts and other goods.

Tracy (CT)

Do the JGR shop guys like Denny? He never really has anything nice to say about them. His act of blaming everyone is getting tiring

David Newton
  (3:08 PM)

Denny is pretty hard on his team at times, but they love his competitive fire. Mike Ford keeps the peace over there.

josh (slc)

conway over or under -20laps?

David Newton
  (3:08 PM)

Over.

Ed (NC)

You know of any fan days happening in Charlotte during race week in Oct?

David Newton
  (3:09 PM)

I've heard a few, but can't recite them off the top of my head. Check out the team website and I'm sure that will fill you in.

josh (slc)

i asked ed yesterday this question and he said he would have to think about it. i want your take. in my opinion dale jr hase not been the same driver since he was driving that corvette and it caught on fire. ever since that year he has been on a downward spin!

David Newton
  (3:10 PM)

It did have a profound impact on his life. Think about it. He believes his dad's spirit pulled him out of the car. I wouldn't say his driving hasn't been the same since then, though.

TG (PA)

Do you think Kenny Francis will come over to Hendrick this next year so he will already be there when Kasey comes over in 2012? And do you think Mark Martin's crew chief will then work with Junior?

David Newton
  (3:11 PM)

Hearing different things. Red Bull would love to have him come over with Kahne, but Toyota doesn't want Kenny getting into all of its secrets for a year and then leaving. Also hearing Kenny could move to Hendrick and be in place when Kahne gets there. Not sure how this one will work out.

josh (slc)

what race would you attend phoenix or vegas?

David Newton
  (3:12 PM)

Phoenix unless you're into gambling. The racing is better there and there's plenty to do outside the track.

Chris (NC)

With the proposed elimination format for the Chase and winner-take-all last race idea, how many RPM's do you think Bill Sr. and Jr. are doing in their graves?

David Newton
  (3:13 PM)

Funny. They always tried to do what is best for the sport. I'm sure if they could be convinced this was best they would be for it. I just don't happen to agree.

Dustin (Office)

Old Spice going to Harvick?

David Newton
  (3:13 PM)

Nope. Think they are leaving the sport.

Josh (Nashville)

Think JJ can win this weekend and get rolling

David Newton
  (3:13 PM)

He can and it wouldn't surprise me to see it happen. He's still my favorite to take the crown.

josh (slc)

any news on the new front end for next year? i hope they allow teams some shock travel!

David Newton
  (3:14 PM)

They're still planning to make a change that will take care of what you say and look better to the eye as well.

josh (slc)

since the new car has been running now for 3yrs has it grown on you? i dont think it looks as bad as it did when we first saw it at bristol!

David Newton
  (3:15 PM)

I never was one that said it was plain ugly, and it has grown on me. I just want to see good racing and what we've seen this year is some of the best in a long time.

josh (slc)

a dew years ago they where talking about maybe using a bigger tire. are they still looking into it?

David Newton
  (3:16 PM)

Goodyear did do some research into that, but they believe the compound they've found has erased many of the issues that had them looking for an alternative. There would have been a huge cost to change. Goodyear would have to completely rebuild all of its molds and commit to that.

Ed (NC)

What college football game will you be watching this weekend?

David Newton
  (3:17 PM)

Georgia-South Carolina at noon. Love to see Penn State-Alabama, but I'll be covering the race with one eye by then. Tons of great choices, though. You?

Stephen (NE)

Tony Jr wont split

David Newton
  (3:17 PM)

Think I said that.

Andrew (Kettering Ohio)

Who will be the next first time Cup winner? Will there ever be another one?

David Newton
  (3:18 PM)

Dale Jr. Sorry. He once won a race or two, didn't he. Joking. Really, joking. How about Austin Dillon?

Jenny (My new Expedition in NJ)

Commenting on Junior's slow practice times, why is it that it has to be the car right off the trailer? Why can't it possibly be Junior is not giving it all in practice now that he has missed the chase again?

David Newton
  (3:19 PM)

Point taken. But Junior typically is pretty good here. It's not like he stepped onto a road course.

Andrew (Kettering Ohio)

Does Todd Bodine have the truck title locked up?

David Newton
  (3:19 PM)

Pretty close to it.

Jolt (IglooNATION)

Ummm...David. July 4, 2013 falls on a Thursday. You do know that right? Just kidding. I love the chat bru!

David Newton
  (3:19 PM)

Didn't you hear, they are moving the 2013 Daytona summer race to Thursday night so it won't conflict with a big Sunday bowling special.

Todd (Ga)

Is the JR motorsports facility large enough to house a couple of cup teams or would they have to add on?

David Newton
  (3:20 PM)

Easily.

Tracy (CT)

Would a better comparison for Kyle be DW? They both were agressive and have big yaps.

David Newton
  (3:21 PM)

You could make that argument. I might compare him to Bobby Allison who won 610 non-Cup events, or so he told me.

Phil (Richmond, Va.)

Any word on where Sadler might end up next year? Does he have a chance at a cup ride?

David Newton
  (3:22 PM)

He's talked to Harvick about a Truck ride. There are several Nationwide possibilities, and Sadler says he's talked to a few teams about Cup. Nothing definite yet.

Diane (Los Angeles)

By the way David I think this is a modified impound - the teams can do just about anything to the cars they want tomorrow as they retech before the race. Not like Nationwide where that puts you at the rear.

David Newton
  (3:22 PM)

Will double check for you.

Dale Jr (Richmond)

So I guess all the failures of the 5/88 shop are pretty much my fault this year?

David Newton
  (3:23 PM)

Totally. Everything is. You know that. Seriously, guys and gals, Mark Martin's struggles have been just about as great as Dale Jr.'s. I'd say Mark's season has been a bigger disappointment.

Ryan (Ventura CA)

but Toyota doesn't want Kenny getting into all of its secretswhat secrets?! how to be 40 hp down

David Newton
  (3:23 PM)

There is that.

Jenny (My new Expedition in NJ)

His father's spirit helped him out of the burning car? You buy that? Maybe Junior can channel his father's spirit for some wins. That might be a little more believable.

David Newton
  (3:24 PM)

Anybody have a Ouiga board?

buddy (lynchburg va)

a few days ago (wednesday?) elliott sadler's spotter brett griffin posted a video on twitter where sadler autographed the dashboard of a car. elliott asked the owner if she wanted this year, or next years number, included with his signature. anything going on here you care to share, or find out?

David Newton
  (3:25 PM)

Well, we definitely know Sadler won't be in the No. 19. What number did he sign?

Chris N (Crestview, FL)

There was a story on a competitors website basically saying most of NASCARs problems were because of Junior. Do you agree?

David Newton
  (3:26 PM)

Hardly. And why would you read a competitor's website where they give you that type of nonsense. I'm not saying the sport wouldn't be better off if Dale Jr. succeeded, but if it's built around one driver then it is doomed.

Kenny Francis (RIR)

I will announce in a few weeks that I have signed with HMS that will give RH the out he needs to remove Mcgrew without sounding like he was lieing. I will CC for the 88 next year and then there will be a decision on who cc's the 5 and 88 in 2012.

David Newton
  (3:27 PM)

Man, you can chat and help Kahne in practice at the same time. Remarkable. Maybe you should focus on the track right now, though.

Ed (NC)

Dawgs over Cocks.

David Newton
  (3:27 PM)

It'll be tight, but yes.

Larry (MI)

Looks like Jr found a little speed. Currently 8th in the 2nd practice.

David Newton
  (3:28 PM)

There you go. Lance McGrew is a savior.

josh (slc)

out of the two cars cup and nationwide wich car would be better for the cup series? i wish cup would run the new one that nationwide uses!

David Newton
  (3:28 PM)

I vote to move the Nationwide car to Cup, do away with the Nationwide series and just run Cup and Trucks. What do you think of that?

Jolt (IglooNATION)

LOL. So that sarcasm almost made me laugh in my fabric covered box at work. Literally. When do you think will be the next time that there's a legitimate Rookie of the Year contender. I don't mean to discount the Immortal Kevin Conway sponsored by Extenze Male Enchiladas.

David Newton
  (3:29 PM)

I forgot about Conway. Can I change my mind?

Chris N (Crestview, FL)

I can't believe people honestly believe junior goes out there and doesn't give it his best. pretty dumb IMO

David Newton
  (3:30 PM)

Hard to believe he wouldn't. Is he totally committed as far as training and eating healthy, I don't know. But there's no doubt he wants to win.

David Newton
  (3:31 PM)

That's it for the day. Be sure to follow ESPN and ESPN.com this weekend for your race coverage. If you have more questions, ask me on twitter, @DNewtonespn. Outta here.
