Good morning gang -- we've got one hour of fantasy chattage ahead of us. With NFL Week 1 just a few days away, we'll take all questions in either baseball or football. Hope you all had a great Labor Day Weekend... Who's up first?
AJ,What Def should I pick up based on their matchup week 1? Cle @ TB, Miami @ Buf, Ten vs. Oak, Arizona @ St. Louis, or SD at KC?
I think Bills will be a strong play this week with inexperienced Chad Henne at the helm.
I've got 2 choices to make by Thursday nightMichael Crabtree vs. Bernard Berrian for my no. 2 receiver spotVisante Shiancoe vs. Chris Cooley for my tight end spot
I like Crabtree a lot this week. Still not sold on Berrian as a No. 1. As for TE, though I think Favre-Shiancoe becomes a red zone staple for as long as Brett is able.
Owner in my league is desperate for WR depth bc of Sidney Rice/Santonio situation. Fair or foul to offer him Burleson and Berrian for Antonio Gates?
Why wouldn't it be fair to offer him such a deal? Fills his need, and you should try and get even more if he's that desperate.
Who's the last QB you'd feel comfortable with?
I think there are seven QBs this year that are in that "comfort zone" - Rodgers, Brees, Manning and Brady... then Schaub, Rivers and Romo.
AJ, You buying any of the hype on Mike Williams of the Seahawks ? Could he be in line for a lot of red zone targets and is he worth stashing in 12 team leagues ?
The fact the team cut ties with Housh goes a long way towards Carroll's belief in Williams. Absolutely a guy to have on the roster.
Is Bradshaw a top 20 back now that he's the starter in a run 1st offense?
I don't think the starter label makes too much of a difference. Bradshaw/Jacobs split isn't going to change with this news. Borderline top 20.
AJ, which one of the Mike Williams do you like better?
Longterm, TB Mike - but for this season, SEA Mike.
Which defense is a better play Week 1, Dallas against an immobile McNabb or the Giants against the Panthers and still unproven Matt Moore?
Cowboys by a nose.
AJ, need to start 2 out of M. Colston, A. Bradshaw, J. Best and Cadillac...tought call....thanks!
Colston and Caddy for Week 1.
Not quite fantasy football but who do you like for Knockout Pools this week?
Good Q... haven't looked too closely yet at all the matchups, but I do like Bears a lot this week.
carson palmer, or favre?
Favre without question for Week 1.
Aromashodu vs Det or Gafney vs Jac?
Following along my Bears love for Week 1, I have to give Aromashadu the nod.
I just set my baseball roster for the 3 week playoffs. Am I screwed with Justin Upton and Jose Reyes? Or will they come back and make contributions still?
I don't think we see Reyes again in 2010, just my opinion. A little more optimistic on a return of Upton, but I think you're in a pickle, Rocky.
What do you think of Jahvid Best this year? i noticed you told Tom to start caddy over him? im assuming thats just due to him playing the browns...
Yes, it's a matchup thing for Caddy, and the cutting of Ward which speaks to TB's commitment to their RB. Best could well be the real deal, but I always hesitate to put rookies on too high a pedestal until I see them in real NFL game action.
Gotta bench one of these guys for week 1 - who gets the axe? Roddy, Welker, or Marshall?
If PPR, bench Marshall. If not, bench Welker.
I got the dreaded 10 pick in a 10 team ppr league. I had to go Brady and Andre Johnson. Jamaal Charles and Jahvid Best fell to me the next 2 picks. You think I can compete with those 2 as my main RB's or should I look to make a move. I also have Wes Welker as my other WR.
I think you'll be fine... most folks would kill for Brady/AJ with the 10. In general I always advise drafting the best team you can and then waiting a week to see exactly how your team stacks up before going nuts on the trade market.
CarGo, Votto or Pujols for the triple crown? Or none? Who do you want in a long term keeper league?
None. Home runs could well go to Reynolds, throwing a big monkey wrench in the whole "race" -- in a keeper all three are solid, but I'd choose CarGo.
Does Dennis Dixon starting for Pitt make ATL a better D/ST play this week over the DAL?
It does put them in the same neighborhood, but Dixon does have escapability that could limit the sack totals. I still go with DAL.
Flacco or Eli week 1?
Don't like Flacco at all this week. Revis is back and looking to make a statement... Ravens have traded away Clayton and Housh won't have tons of time to synch up with Joe.
Who is the better week 1 play at flex, J. Stewart, Harrison, or Hightower?
Until I see TB hold an opposing RB to under 130 yards this season, I'm rolling with their opponent every time.
A quick pick 'em. Just 1 name for each is fine:1) Wieters (hitting again) or Miguel Montero 2) Franklin, Kuo or Rodney (Franklin has a nice schedule)
I'd go with Wieters and Kuo -- that STL schedule hasn't helped the team win lately...
Is Jacoby Jones worth a flex spot in a PPR league? Other options are Hightower, Spiller, FJax.
Absolutely. Jones is a top 40 WR, which puts him right in line for a flex play.
My 2nd starter should be Lesean McCoy...Ricky Williams...Ryan Grant??
I'd go with Grant this week. Plenty of scoring to be had vs PHI.
When do week 1 ranking get released?
Always on Wednesdays -- though projections get posted on Tuesdays.
mario manningham or TJ housh
I'd sit Housh this week. Likely to see only limited snaps.
I've had a tendency to stock up on players from one team- Longo, Crawford and Zobrist from TB, and McCutchen/Walker/Tabata from Pit. It's not intentional, but is it bad strategy? Do I drop any just because they're on the same team?
If a team hits, you win. If they face a tough series and the team gets shutout, you lose. All things being equal, it's better to spread the risk.
Soriano or Manny for the remainder of the fantasy playoffs?
Manny. For a few weeks, playing for a contract, there's few better.
hey AJ, how is it that Mike Adams was awarded a win last night, he came in with the Padres up two runs! what gives?
When starter doesn't go 5, but leaves with the lead, official scorer chooses which reliever did the "best" and awards him the win.
Yoo AJ! thx for answering my ?'s on the twitter (@AJMass), got a first round bye this week so time for some football... How valuable will LeSean McCoy be in a PPR league?
Thanks, and all should feel free to follow as well... Shady is no Westbrook, so I think there's only a slight uptick in value in a PPR. Mid-20s RB.
Looked good in the preseason action I saw, but still only a borderline flex right now. Potential to breakout, but it depends how well KC pass game works as a whole.
Which rb do i start along side deangelo: LT, Barber, F Jones, Jacobs or Harrison?
I have already expressed my JH love this week... I'd consider Felix as well, though MB3 may well vulture him out of the top 15.
Future Baseball Question. Who is a better H2H keeper? Tabata, Rasmus, Arencibia, or Espinosa?
It's always hard to pass on a catcher due to the positional scarcity.
I need some help in my 3rd WR position, Gracon or Dez Bryant?
I'd go with Pierre. Peyton loves to spread it around.
Do you love Harrison just this week or could he be a solid RB2 in ppr over Best and McCoy?
Right now it's just the Week 1 assessment. TB was worst run D in league last season, and with Hardesty out, JH should get 25 carries.
No one gets between me and MY man! Are you still watching BB?
Yes, but I am a glutton for punishment. One of the worst seasons to date.
Wallace or Meachem for week 1?
Meachem, but it should be close. If it weren't for the Dixon factor, I'd lean more PIT's way.
What do with Josh Hamilton? I am in the playoffs starting next week
Doesn't look like he'll be back anytime soon. Certainly need to bench him for this week... and likely next week as well.
I have Moreno, Mendenhall, Best and Mathews, but Foster is on the wire and I have the #1. Burn it? For who?
I'd sit tight. Not every new back will succeed, so why not stick with the two you have and see what happens?
early doucet or devan hester, ya im in trouble
I'd roll with Early. After several seasons waiting for Hester to emerge, I'm skeptical.
Aaron Hill or Ben Zobrist?
Put me in the Z camp.
You have not mentioned anything about Welker yet, so I was curious what you thought of starting him to start the year in my ppr league in week one over Nicks to start?
I think Welker is going to be fine. Still won't get too many TDs, and maybe will catch 6-8 where he used to catch 8-10... but otherwise... fine.
Pierre Thomas. Can we expect week to week consistency from him? He's frustrating to own.
I think he does OK this season... he a No. 2, not a No. 1, but should be consistently near the top 10.
How do you think Shonn Greene will fair against the Ravens Monday night?
He will fare well. 100 and a score.
Who would be best utility player to use? Fred Jackson, Matt Forte, or P. Garcon?
Forte without question.
Start week 1: J. Best, J. Stewart or Ricky Williams?
I start Best slightly ahead of Stewart and cross my fingers.
What do you expect out of Megatron this year?
Top 10 WR numbers.
Kolb in a possible barn burner vs GB or Cutler vs Det?
I don't go anywhere near Kolb until the PHI O-line can prove to me they can keep him upright for 4 quarters.
Which to start in the flex? Spiller or Bradshaw?
Again, I'll go with the guy I know over the guy I don't in Week 1.
How bout Cribbs? Better than mike wallace?
I love Cribbs. One of my sleeper picks in nearly every draft. Having said that, no way he has as much opportunity as Wallace to break out.
Berrian or Laurent Robinson as my WR3?
Laurent this week...
Hakeem Nicks a WR2 or WR3?
I don't think so. Giants still a run first team, and most passes will probably go Steve Smith's way.
Is it necessary to cuff McGahee to Rice?
In today's "everybody has a multi-back offense" I think handcuffs have gone the way of the dinosaur.
In a league where you play TE's as WR's (WR-TE) would you go Maclin or V. Davis for the 3rd spot
I'd go Vernon.
Can Broxton be dropped?
Been preaching that since July.
How worried should I be with Cincy as my defense this week (vs NE)?
Cincy is going to be a good defense this year, but for this matchup, yeah, I'd be looking for someone else to start.
That's all the time for today gang. Thanks to all who took part... Stephania is in at 3pm for all the injury scoop, and we'll be back next week when the NFL games count for real. Until then, Be Seeing You!
