Hey everyone-Let's get this party started. Have Pink Floyd shuffling loud on the iPod and I am ready for some serious NFL talk.
Your thoughts on V-Jax, do you see him being traded soon? Vikings would be a great fit for him, do you see this happening?
Gotta think that he does move soon, but even if he is traded, he is still suspended. Minny would love to have him of course, but S Rice does come back now in 7 weeks or so. Big picture: WR isn't a need for Minny.
when does this party start?
Maybe you didn't hear, but this party just started Brother.
QUESTION TO MATT DUB WILLIAMSON AT12.20 HI MATT REDSKINS OR TEXANS
I wrote that game up for Scouts Inc and picked Houston. I could see a let down though. Remember, Kubiak is the padawan here to Shanny being the master. Both D's should be VERY used to seeing what they will see on Sunday. They see it every day in practice. I was very impressed with what the Texans did last week, but I still question their intestinal fortitude.
What's this talk of NYJ? I said I do not want to play for a 3-4. It is reported they are not interested. But if not NYJ who will trade for me?
Small market when you take all the 3-4 teams out of the picture!
Matt, the 49ers looked like garbage against the Seahawks on Sunday, please tell me they at least look motivated and hungry this week against the Saints. If they come out flat again as much as i like Singletary the calls for his head will have to start.
Too early to call for his head, but that was a pathetic display in Seattle. Seattle is a very tough place to play, but SF was dominated. Unacceptable. I have backed A Smith, but he must step it up. I don't think NO is a good matchup for them either. Can their secondary keep up with Brees and those 3 and 4 WR sets? They struggled with that against Hasselbeck!
Is it just me, or did Pittsburgh dust off the blueprint for the 15-1 Big Ben rookie season last week?
Perfect call by you. Absolutely. Gonna say it again-Best D in the league.
Why are the cheiffs so reluctant to give the ball to J. Charles more than 10 times a game? (Fear he may rush for 2,000yds)
Utter insanity. Bars in the Windows. Surely Gone Fishing.
Utter insanity. Bars in the Windows. Surely Gone Fishing.
Hi Matt -- Have your updated rookie rankings come out yet?
Should be out any minute. Truthfully, there were not a lot of superb performances by the Rooks this week. It was only Week 1 and all of their first NFL games though!
Any under the radar Rooks who I should have my eye on?
Worried about the Colts?
Yup. Completely dominated on both sides of the line. That is a problem for sure.
Hey Matt, enjoy your chats! "I made my bones when you were going out with cheerleaders!" I know you were pretty high on the Bears before the season. You have to be rethinking after watching that "offensive" line. How many wins do you think they end up?
Great GF quote there Danny...but in a heavy Pink Floyd mode right now. The line was a concern before and still very much is. I did also cool on the Bears as the preseason went along-for that reason. 7 or 8 wins. But I must say-and I don't care how the rule is worded-but Chi-Town stole one on Sunday.
penalties, no flow on offense, dumb decisions by coaches and players- Matt, some of these games have been bRUTAL to watch. Think there will be more flow week 2?
I do agree and yes, I am hoping so. What would Week 1 look like if there were only 2 preseason games? Amazing. Still-I very much believe that fatigue becomes a factor early in the season. None of these players had played an entire game up until Week 1 and they are playing in some warm weather. Of course-that isn't an excuse.
Do you think the Cowboys play much better when Colombo and Kosier come back?
I do. They are very much needed. Seemed like Garrett didn't trust the OL and it greatly influenced his play calling...negatively.
Do you expect the 1st half or 2nd half Bengals to show up vs BAL? I know it was a blowout but they seemed to get some rhythm with the no huddle.
That 2nd half is make believe. NEng took their foot off the gas. Overall, it was a poor showing by Cincy. Hopefully, they realize that there needs to be some desperation this week. Still, I am souring more and more on Palmer.
Can you explain the HCs' reluctance to use timeouts before the 2 minute warning?
Doesn't make sense to me either. Poor clock management is a huge pet peeve of mine, but it is shows its head over and over and week after week. I almost feel like every Head Coach should put his ego aside and have one guy in charge of JUST clock management on game day. It is a big job.
is trent edwards the worst starting QB in the league?
Nah, but real close. I would take him over DA and maybe even Delhomme.
can we get a bucket of stick em for garcon?
No question! 18 didn't seem too happy with that whole situation!
Are the Vikings in trouble?
Let me answer that a week from now. I see them as a pretty evenly matched team against the 'Phins. Both teams have issues right now, but Minny should be able to throw against this secondary. Still on the fence on Minny. I do expect much more from Favre though. Surely he will have a better feel for his receivers after a long week of practice to prepare. But..I don't see Minny as a SB contender.
Do you think the Chiefs will make the playoffs?
No, but I did pick them to win that game and I picked them to finish 2nd in their division. Starting to be a believer. Two great coordinators. A lot of promising young skill talent.
Hey, Matt. Long time no see. Who do you see as emerging as Favre's go-to WR with Rice out? Will it be Berrian or can a guy like Camarillo step into that role?
It has to be Harvin. They didn't seem anywhere close to being on the same page, but it has to be him. Shiancoe's role isn't an aberration either-he can play and contribute consistently.
Insanity?, are you talking about me or Kansas City. I just thought that after Charles went for over 1,000yds in 8 games as astarter last year he would be KC's #1 option. He looks like he is there 3rd option?
I was talking about KC. I am very much with you on Charles. Jones isn't even close to him right now.
Miles Austin, How many TDs this year?
Indy definitely got dominated on the lines. How will Giants do this week? On paper they should be able to do what Houston did, but that was a HUGE game for Texans, and I just can't see Indy at 0-2.
I don't LOVE NYG's running game though. I think they are now officially a passing team. But their DL can certainly be even more disruptive than Houston's.
How worried are you about Grant going out for the Packers? I think Jackson can do all they need with their QB and receivers.
I agree. There will be an immediate drop off though when they look to run out the clock and in short yardage situations. But-here is my worry-Week 10, Week 16, The NFC Championship Game. Can Jackson hold up? Remember, even at Nebraska, he wasn't a work horse guy. That REALLY concerns me.
Hakeem Nicks... the go to receiver the Giants need?
No question. Superstar in the making.
If the 49ers start out 0-2 (which I think they will), can they recover or does it start to spiral out of control? If so, how long do they stick with Alex Smith?
They can recover considering the division they are in.
How would you advise getting into your line of work?
Pound on every closed and open door you can. Hustle. Hustle. Hustle. Keep your ears wide open and your mouth closed-for the most part.
If you're John Fox this week, do you call a single pass?
I hear that. Could see a LOT more of J Stewart. Wow did Moore look bad too.
What can Laurence Maroney offer to the Broncos? He's been living off "potential" for 4 years now, and it just doesn't seem like he'll be a consistent contributor.
Well, as I told Bill Williamson, Josh McD obviously knows Maroney much better than any of us do. But I also think that if NEng is done with him, that they are smarter than your average team, and know what they are talking about more than most. Maroney is too similar to Buck and Moreno to me. None are special in any one area. None help on special teams. None are great on 3rd downs. All have injury/consistency issues. I guess the hope is that 2 of the 3 will always be healthy. Far from an earth shattering move though.
Hanyesworth would be pefect in Blue and Orange in between Tommie Harris and Julius Peppers.
Now you are talkin! Very much agree. A LOT of $$$ at one position (DL) though. Should have kept A Brown too. Peppers, Big Al, Harris and Brown up front? Geez
Chargers defense impress you at all? Or are you chalking it up to bad chiefs offense? Besides one miscue on the long run they were at 3.0 ypc, 1-11 on 3rd downs and 67 yards passing. Pretty dominate
It was a strong showing. Gotta give credit there where it is due. But the field was very sloppy. This week isn't a great test either, but still not on board with SD's D.
Seemed to me this weekend that the Jets had a lot of trouble stopping Boldin, esp in the middle of the field.
KC Joyner was livid during our Cover it Live session that NYJ would put Revis on Mason instead of Boldin. Made no sense to me either. Boldin looked great-no doubt. But not sure what Rex was doing there. Meanwhile, Kyle Wilson had a LONG night.
Biggest surprise from week one?
Would say SF's display.
Packers RB situation reminds me of late 90s - somebody will step up. BJax actually brings more versatility with his pass catching and pass pro but obviously doesn't offer the hard running style Grant does. I think we (GB) will be fine.
I did mean to mention that. With the wealth of talent on that O, any average RB is going to get the job done for the most part. If not, air it out!
Im not a fan of DA as the QB, but he seems to have a good rapport with Steve Breaston so Im curious if you think that Breaston might end up having a better statistical year than Fitz (not saying Breaston is the better player)
Can't buy that. DA and Breaston did take a while to get on the same page this weekend too. Of course Larry is going to command WAY more attention than Breaston too. But in the end, Fitz has the better numbers. DA needs to realize (like he did with Braylon and K2) that he can just put it near Fitz and get a completion.
Is it me or is everyone overreacting about the Jets? They lost by 1 point to a team that is considered a Superbowl contender. If you eliminate a ticky-tack flag on Baltimore's FG it's 9-6. Does the O have to get better? Of course.
True. But Jenkins-who is awesome-is out for the year and the biggest problem I had with this team looks worse than I even imagined: QB
On KC, I saw a lot of surprises: they are fast on D, McCluster and Arenas give them permanent threats in the special teams, and Charles and Jones make a good backfield. Too bad they traded for Cassel, who I think will always stink if he has to throw more than 10 yds downfield. How is my assessment?
Certainly not sold on Cassel myself. He doesn't handle pressure well-and perceives it when it isn't there. Average arm, but not terrible. We shall see. Remember what Weiss did with B Quinn (who is awful) at ND? Might be able manufacture something from his QB.
Does Buffalo reach 2 wins this year?
Wow...very small number! I say yes, but they don't reach 3!
MW: Gotta call you out on the "he can just put it near Fitz and get a completion" comment. DA put it near Fitz 15x to the tune of 3 completions.
I saw that, but I also very much believe that Larry will haul in just about everything thrown his way more often than not. I also am not sure that he is 100% healthy.
Shouldn't people wait to see a game that isnt in the pouring rain before they give up on Cassel? That game was not made for passing the ball.
That is very true too. Even Rivers struggled mightily on MNF. Real hard to judge Cassel's downfield ability in those circumstances.
Any chance the Packers trade for M. Lynch?
It seems like a good fit on paper and sure, it might work out well. But that organization really stresses character and Lynch has a checkered past.
Mike Sims-Walker? Is Thomas the guy now?
Champ just killed MSW this week. He will recover...but not against Nnamdi in Week 2! I do like Thomas a lot though.
Any chance that NYJ trade for Matt Lineart?
Yeah, that would really solve their problems!
Welker looked great in Week 1, with Revis on Moss can he do it again in week 2 against the Jets?
Expect a monster game from Welker. He should eat Cromartie or Wilson alive.
Will Matt Schaub's numbers suffer or flourish with Arian Foster running like he stole something?
Probably. Those Week 1 stats will prob never be duplicated though-either by Foster or Schuab. More balance is coming.
How many men reporters are allowed in women lockers rooms after a game?
I have no idea whatsoever. Anyone know the answer to this?
Is there *that* much difference between Buffalo and the Jets? Bad QB good RBs, Jets line is worse than last year, good pass D?
Yes, there is THAT much of a difference. I agree that Sanchez is a liability that cannot be hidden, but Buff's D isn't anywhere close to the Jets.
Greetings! Looking at the Falcon's first game, is it fair to say that they need some wr help? It seemed to me that he targed White too many times, resulting in the pick. Other than Gonzalez/Douglas, what else can the Falcons do?
Jenkins will be back. He isn't great, but that will allow Douglass to play the slot where he is best. Honestly, blame the Steelers' D more than ATL's O for that showing.
Jacksonville is at San Diego this week, not Oakland. Do you like Jason Campbell at home vs the Rams this week?
Oh yeah! My error there. "Like" is a very strong word for that situation with Campbell...even against the Rams.
Is Clay Matthews awesome or what?
He sure is. Amazing that he is even THAT much better in year 2.
McFadden or Bush going forward?
Bush. Better fit for the scheme. McF had a very good game. I don't think he played quite as well as his numbers indicated, but I do give him credit. Although, I still think he is still quite stinky.
Matt, you answer more ?'s in 15 minutes than most chatters get to in an hour. The Pink Floyd is working for you! How do you see the Shonn Greene/LT committee working out?
Floyd always works for me, but I am also always this fast...just a fact. Greene can't catch a cold and that hurts him big time. Sanchez needs that dump off guy. LT looks much better than I expected, but I bet it doesn't last. I would say Greene 70% to LT's 30%. ...."If you want to see what is behind these cold eyes, you just have to claw your way through this disguise"
had the Lions won though they would have stolen one to. The Bears outplayed them.
I guess that isn't entirely untrue. Detroit's secondary is and played rather awful. Still, that Calvin non-TD doesn't sit well with me.
Is Fred Taylor now a legit RB2/Flex or still just there to watch the Tom Brady air show?
It will absolutely be an air show of monumental proportions. I would say that Fred T is more of a flex than a number 2...for now until BB changes his mind or Taylor gets hurt.
Detroit still can't run the ball. How tough is life going to be for Hill and Co.?
Brutal. They couldn't not exploit 7-man fronts last week. And now, no one is going to be worried about deep outs, long balls, etc with Hill. Stafford's injury is a huge deal.
Vick looked impressive in the 2nd half. Was that an abberation?
He looked like the old Vick. Crazy athlete. Amazing runner. So-so thrower. Surely played better than Kolb, but he still misses guys and doesn't fit Reid's WCO AT ALL. Doesn't hit anyone in stride or get it out on time consistently. But-they were better with him.
What is next for Bob Sanders? He is a great player but is haunted by injuries. Will he retire? Will Indy release him?
Who knows. It is sad really. So much fun to watch. But he is a little fella-and throws his body around like a big fella. Surely you are a Sanders fan-since you are from Erie.
Matt, How do you think Bradford Looked Sunday, Promising?
Yes, but Baby Steps. Love the way he throws. Poised. Tough. Smart. They attempted way too many passes, but 3 INTs is still too many. One wasn't his fault, but he remains a huge work in progress. But...promising for sure.
Any chance the Saints add a DL or a LB? Any possible names?
To me, That is the team that should pursue Big Al
Why would you not give Adrian Peterson more touches
It is amazing to me
I know it was against PIT but are you worried about Matt Ryan?
Not really. He started to get better as the game went along. Should be fine this week. Very slight concern.
Did you see Stewart Bradley collapse on the field after an apparent head injury and re-enter just plays later? Does the NFL need to address its on-field concussion "tests"
It amazed me that he went back in the game. Not a doc-and won't ever pretend to be, but wow.
I'm still in shock, Dallas gave that game away....DeAngelo Hall was targeted 14 times and gave up about 12 for 110 but made 1 play and now is getting props...horrible
He really isn't a very good CB. Does make big plays. Story of his career.
I think K.C. finishes with a top 10 D...wishful thinking?
Wishful thinking. Real well coached, but other than Hali, where does the pass rush come from? I was VERY encourage by G Dorsey though. If Romeo can get the most out of him-look out. They still need a NT and another OLB.
Do you think there is any chance that the bears try to make a play for Logan Mankins?
They have traded so many high draft picks lately though...which isn't what that organization is really all about. But Mankins is great. Would be a tremendous addition.
Top 3 poorly coached teams in Week 1: 1) SF, 2) Dallas, 3) Minnesota. What do you think?
I don't disagree with those at all. They probably are not alone though either. Cincy?
Matt...browns fan displaced out here, please tell me why Jerome Harrison only gets 9 touches in that game.
I don't understand that either. He is clearly their best RB. Clearly. Give him the rock. Only thing I can think: playing in Florida and Harrison was winded easily. But I have no idea.
Why is everyone calling Aaron Rodgers an elite quarterback so soon? He is unproven. Let's not forget they went 6-10 last year
The Packers were not 6-10 last year
Why in the world would John Fox Allow Matt Moore to throw the ball 33 times when the game wasn't that far outta reach..... I really question Davidson's play calling sometimes
Yup, can add Carolina to that list from a few questions ago too!
If Dallas falters, could Phillips be gone before the season ends?
I would say Yes. Jerry can't be in a real patient mood these days.
What would it cost fo rNO to get Big Al??...How likely?
Not very likely, but they should. 2nd rounder I bet gets it done...although, that is prob a late 2nd rounder...esp if you add Haynesworth to the D!
Arizona won but certainly didn't look convincing. Do they have any chance coming into another domed environment and beating Atlanta in week 2?
I think they get killed this week. And I think ATL really puts themselves back on the map by crushing the Cards. Lock it up.
How bout we could trade Reggie's heisman for fat Albert
It's not yours to give anymore
How good will Josh Freeman be? He seemed to have that "it" thing at times last year.
I like him. Tough. Very gifted. Unafraid to pull the trigger. Let's it fly.
Is Lovie going to shuffle two FS the entire year, or is he just getting Major Wright's feet wet?
Prob just getting the Rook's feet wet. Wright looks legit to me and exactly what they need back there from a range and versatility standpoint.
How awesome was Lawrence Timmons on Sunday? All-pro candidate?
For sure. Big time breakout season.
What's the word on Jake Delhomme? Even without an injury I see the Browns having a rough week.
I do too and the word on Delhomme is "Interception"
Who is your Eliminator pick this week?
It will be ATL just because I don't want to use up Green Bay yet
How far is Carolina about to fall?..they looked pretty ugly
They have problems. Need to re-dedicate to the run. S Smith looks great. The QB is a big problem. Not real sold on the D either.
Well Folks, I need to run. Great chat as always. Lots of fun.
